General slag granulation, on the other hand, is extensively applied, although in some cases crudely, with disastrous effects, as a result of not recognising the high heat capacities prevalent in slags. Thus, purpose-designed granulation and solidification processes are discussed, taking into account specific applications and the individual signatures of alloys and slags, emphasising that no slag, matte, or alloy responds in similar fashion to a granulation practice. This paper addresses three issues, namely: ? Water-granulation of BOF steel slag, without processing it to render it environmentally safe, physically and chemically acceptable for use by the construction industry, and the process economical ? Processing air-cooled BOF steel slag to change its physical and chemical properties to be acceptable for various uses and extracting metallic and bound iron ? Processing air-cooled or molten manganese slag to lower its manganese content to a level that is acceptable from an environmental and health point of view, and extracting FeMn-alloy of acceptable composition. The latter process culminated in a patented process to extract FeMn from air-cooled and molten manganese slag, and, at the same time, produce a hydraulic (cementitious) slag, thus transforming a possible hazardous by-product into virtually 100% saleable products.

The effect of selective dispersants as wet grinding aids for ores is demonstrated on laboratory scale batch and continuous grinding equipment. A complete characterization of behavior is performed on a given ore to demonstrate correlations involving torque, % solids, net production rate, and slurry weight and volume loading. The relationship between such laboratory data and industrial scale testing results is very consistent.

"Federal regulations require the installation of refuge alternatives (RAs) in underground coal mines. Of the in-use RAs, over 95% are mobile RAs with the remainder being built-in-place (BIP) RAs. Heat/humidity buildup has been one of the major concerns with mobile RAs. For BIP RAs, however, there is a lack of in-mine heat/humidity test data to determine the extent of heat and humidity buildup. To quantify heat/humidity buildup in BIP RAs, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) performed a series of heat/humidity tests on a 60-person BIP RA with and without a borehole air supply. At various times during the year, tests were performed with cooled, heated, or unconditioned borehole air to examine how various outdoor temperatures may affect the thermal conditions inside a BIP RA. The results show that the air supplied to a BIP RA may require heating and cooling, depending on the outside air temperatures and the temperature of the mine. For example, during tests with an external ambient temperature above 70°F and a humidity that reached 90 %RH, providing 55°F dew point air was able to keep the internal apparent temperature below the mandated 95°F. Results for each test case are presented. INTRODUCTION The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) has required the installation of refuge alternatives (RAs) in underground coal mines since 2008 [1]. MSHA requires that RAs provide an environment with breathable air for entrapped miners for a 96-hour period. Heat buildup inside an occupied RA is a serious concern. Without a means to dissipate the heat and humidity generated by the occupants and the carbon dioxide scrubbing system, the temperature and humidity inside RAs could lead to severe discomfort or heat stress depending on the mine ambient temperature before and during occupation of the RA. In its 2006 report, the West Virginia Mine Safety Technology Task Force recommended an apparent temperature limit of 95°F for RAs [2]. In 30 CFR 7.504, MSHA specifies a maximum apparent temperature of 95°F inside an occupied RA [3]. The apparent temperature is calculated using both air temperature and relative humidity [4]. To determine if their RAs meet the apparent temperature limit, RA manufacturers have been performing 96-hour-long heat and humidity tests in laboratories. During these tests, a heat input of 117 W (400 BTU/hr) per person is used to represent the metabolic heat of a single miner [2]. The heat generated by the RA’s carbon dioxide system is also accounted for in testing. To account for this heat, 50 W (170 BTU/hr) of heat per miner is used for a lithium hydroxide scrubbing system, or 30 W (100 BTU/hr) of heat per miner is used for a soda lime scrubbing system [5]. In these tests, air velocities around the RA are minimized to represent the worst-case scenario of an interruption in mine ventilation that might occur in a mine disaster."

The Sikhote-Alin part of the Circum-Pacific Ore Belt is characterized by wide distribution of Sn, Pb, Zn, W; Au, Ag, and other mineralization. This mineralization is regionally associated with the Late Cretaceous-Tertiary East Sikhote-Alin volcanic belt where it overlaps the Taukha accretiollary-wedge terrane of the Early Cretaceous age. The Pb-Zn deposits of the Dalnegorsk ore district may be grouped into the skarn (about 80%) and vein types. The skarn deposits are of major commercial value. Their geological position is controlled by the carbonate units located within tectonic melange of the Taukha terrane. Some other lithological and tectonic factors also play a significant role ill distribution of the mineralization. The ore bodies are traced to the depth of 1000-1500 m below the surface, having a pipe-lens shape and vertical zonation. Major minerals of the ores are galena, sphalerite, pyrrhotine, chalkopyrite, hedenbergite, quartz, and calcite. The minor elements of the Pb-Zn mineralization are cadmium, silver, bismuth, and copper. The paper describes relationships between mineral suites and minor element contents in the ores, as well as their significance for processing the ores. The metallurgy applied allows high recovering of the major components (Pb -93.9%; Zn -91.4%). However the tails contain some minor components that may be of commercial interest.

The paper describes a cyclic method for processing manganese ores using sodium sulphate as the basic reagent. Sodium sulphate is electrolyzed in a diaphragm cell to give an anolyte sodium sulphate acid and a catholyte containing caustic soda, a part of which is carbonated in a cyclic manner to form soda and reduced ore is leached with the anolyte to dissolve the manganese and the impurities are precipitated by addition of catholyte. Manganese in the pregnant solution is precipitated as synthetic rhodochrosite with a carbonated catholyte, and sodium sulphate is regenerated. Calcining the manganese carbonate site a high-grade product and the carbon dioxide is returned to the carbonation step. the results of laboratory tests using cells equipped with synthetic fiber diaphragms and permselective membranes which permit transfer of using or cations during electrolysis are described. With the use of 36 rock drills of the jackhammer type at the West Lyell Open Cuts of the Mt Lyell Mining & Railway Co, it is of importance to determine the economic as well as the physical life of these machines. With this purpose in mind records have been kept of the footage bored and the cost of new parts placed in each machine, and the following procedure adopted.A graph is plotted for each machine showing the footage bored as a horizontal line and at each 5000 feet of boring the total cost of new parts is noted on this line (see Figure 1). Thus at a glance it is possible to see the amount of work done by each machine and the money spent on it in new parts. However, it is difficult to visualise from this graph the increase in the cost of new parts for each machine as its life advances. To obviate this clifficulty a curve is plotted with the cost of new parts as the vertical component and the distance bored as the horizontal component.As before the cost of new parts are taken at each 5000 feet bored (see Figure 2).

This paper presents an analysis of fracture mechanisms in coal subjected to bi-axial state of stresses, indentation of laterally con- fined coal specimen. Coal specimens were loaded to failure by the straight wedge indenters at various lateral confinement pressures. Strain distribution and acoustic emission characteristics of coal specimens under stress were recorded. The influence lines of vertical forces acting on the horizontal straight boundary of the coal specimen for each type of wedge indenter have been established using holographic interferometry technique. The effects of wedge indenter angle, confinement pressure, and coal anisotropy on fracture types, failure modes, and post-failure conditions were studied. The results indicated that combined application of holographic interferometry and acoustic emission monitoring techniques is not only suitable for studying deformability of heterogeneous and microscopically discontinuous material under stress but it also enhances the mode of fracture during the post failure stage.

The mineral industry of Benin continued to be confined to the production of cement, crude oil, salt, and sand and gravel. Only crude oil and cement were exported, with the value of crude oil exports and cement exports constituting about 20% and 2% of export revenue, respectively. The value of crude oil exports was less than the cost of imports of refined petroleum products. Production of crude oil was unchanged from 1986, averaging 5,500 barrels per day (bbl/d). The Government managed the facilities at the Semé Oilfield while actively seeking a new manager to replace Pan Ocean Oil Co. of Switzerland, whose contract was canceled in 1986. Recoverable reserves of crude oil were estimated to be between 18 and 30 million barrels.

PROBLEMS in expressing, interpreting, and using size-distribution data recur in many phases of mineral dressing; therefore it is desirable that size analyses be expressed in such a form, either numerically or graphically, that comparisons can be made readily. The size distribution of comminuted material is a result of a specific physical operation on the material and therefore should be governed by some definite physical principle, or cause-effect relation. Although this principle has not been discovered, it has been found that the size distribution of comminuted, homogeneous solids may be expressed by relatively simple mathematical equations. Two equations in particular, proposed by Gaudin1 and by Rosin and Rammler,2 respectively, have stood out, both having wide demonstrated ranges of application. The form and the method of application of the two appear almost irreconcilably different on the surface, but, as will be shown, they are asymptotic in the fine sizes when expressed in the same units. This paper gives the results of a further study of the Gaudin and Rosin-Rammler relations, made with the object of developing a form of size-distribution equation that will be more usable and more significant-particularly in comminution studies, both for interpreting the nature of size distribution and for evaluating surface. The work is summarized in the following: I. An equation relating cumulative per cent finer to particle size in the fine sizes is derived from Gaudin's original equation. That equation relates weight per cent retained on one size and through the next larger size in a geometric series of sizes to size (of the retaining screen, for example). 2. Comparisons with Gaudin's equation and with the Rosin-Rammler equation show that the cumulative equation applies to the fine sizes of all size distributions that fit either of these earlier relations, and, furthermore, has some advantages over each. 3. A simple graphical method of surface calculation based on the cumulative-equation plot is evolved and illustrated. 4. Additional confirmation of the cumulative equation was obtained in the more severe test of sizing down to the limit of a sedimentation balance a sample of jaw-crushed quartz. The equation was closely followed over a 20o-fold range in size, from approximately 0.4 mm. (35 mesh) down to 0.0023 mm. (2.3 microns), the lower limit of the size analysis made. There is no indication that the equation will not hold further to well below 2.3 microns. 5. Calculations of the surface produced in the jaw-crushing test mentioned above showed that at least 8o per cent of the total new surface was on particles finer than 35 mesh (about ½ 5 of the crusher setting). Exploratory work was conducted in the fabrication of integrated circuitry, specifically linear amplifier circuits, by three general methods: 1) monolithic diffused silicon; 2) a combination of metal thin-film and monolithic diffused silicon; and 3) a hybrid of metal films and diffused silicon on an alunina substrate. In these linear amplifier integrated circuits the followzng conditions were desired: very high-frequency response, high voltage gain, and good thermal tracking stability of electrical characteristics. The resulting circuit designs imposed problems of isolation between elements, layout and smallness of size of active elements, and close tolerances on electrzcal characteristics of the passive elements. Interconnection problems for specific designs resulted from the small dimensions involved and the topography of the hybrid fabrication techniques. The desired integrated-circuit characteristics were achieved with the technologies of categories 2 and 3 above. Solutions to the problems imposed by these characteristics lay in the ability to isolate czrcuit elements of small size while providing a layout designed to minimize element-to-element variations. Sufficient freedom in the formation of passive elements was achieved by uniting the metal film and the monolithic silicon technologies. The most satisfactory designs were based on the beam-lead interconnection and isolation technique. SINCE the advent of integrated circuits, major emphasis has been on fabricating digital integrated circuits. Linear circuits require high performance, high voltage, and tighter tolerance components which are not always compatible with the capability of process technology available for fabrication of these circuits into integrated form. Fortunately the growth of newer and improved processes and materials for fabricating integrated circuits has been an accelerated one. This has now made possible the translation of stringent performance requirements of the linear circuits into microminiature integrated circuits of the same performance. In the exploratory work of fabricating high-performance Linear Integrated Circuits—LIC, the following objectives were formulated: i) fabrication of high-frequency transistors such as the type 2N918 isolated on a single silicon substrate; ii) fabrication of medium-frequency transistors having a very high gain at low collector currents such as the types 2N930/2N2484 isolated on a single substrate ; iii) fabrication of tight-tolerance, high-valued resistors having low temperature coefficients of resistance and stable thermal tracking characteristics, these resistors to be fabricated on an active or passive substrate; iv) simultaneous fabrication of complementary transistors—pn and pnp-on the same silicon substrate; v) fabrication of newer active elements such as MOS, FET transistors along with the conventional active and passive elements on the same silicon substrate. State-of-the-art assessment f all the available processes, materials, and technology to meet above objectives indicated that economic fabrication of LIC cannot be achieved by a single technology for all types of linear circuits. Where design and performance of a given linear circuit can be modified and tolerated to the extent of a particular technology, then alone is it possible to fabricate a LIC using a single process technology such as all diffused, planar technology. In order to evaluate this economic breakpoint with design and performance compromise in fabricating LIC, it is essential that a thorough understanding be obtained of techniques, potentials, and limitations of all the various process technology and materials

This paper presents a new dynamic method called Resonant Pile Test (HPT) for evaluating bearing capacity of pile. The basic conception of RPT is given in brief and the measuring system is also introduced. In addition, the influences of the magnitude of exciting force and of the mass of pile cap on test results are discussed. Finally, comparisons between values of bearing capacity given by RPT and by static load tests for a variety of pile types are listed.

Heats of formation of Au-Zn alloys of compositions Au3Zn and AuZn were rneasured at several temperatures by liquid tin solution calorimetry. The data for Au3Zn show that much smaller heat and entropy effects are associated with the a2- a1 transformation than for the a1 - a transformation. This result is consistent with reported X-ray diffraction studies which indicate that the a1 and (a2 phases have ordered structures which only slightly differ, whereas the a phase is disordered. The heat of formation of AuZn(ß') does not change significantly between 322o and 8000 K, confirming that the ß' alloy remains highly ordered to high temperatures. Not many measurements have been made of the energies of order-disorder transformations in alloy phases. In many cases these energies may be conveniently determined by measuring heats of formation as a function of temperature. Many alloy phases approximately obey Kopp's law of additivity of heat capacities; as a consequence their heats of formation do not change with temperature. In ordered alloys, however, a decrease in degree of order with increasing temperature will contribute an endothermic component to the heat of formation. Thus, for ordered phases where other anomalous contributions to heat capacity in the alloy or its pure components are absent, a measured change in the heat of formation may be attributed to the energy of disordering. A portion of the Au-Zn phase diagram1" is shown in Fig. 1. The composition AuZn(ß') has a well-ordered superlattice structure of the CsCl type at room temperature. The alloy is considered to remain ordered to its melting point,1 although, from X-ray diffraction data and electromotive force measurements of zinc activities, Terpilowski3 concluded that considerable disordering began at -673°K. The Au3Zn composition is a disordered fee solid solution (a) at high temperatures. Between 693o and 543oK, the ailoy orders to form the a1 phase, having a structure based on the L12(AuCu3) type, but with a regular distribution of ordering faults in the c direction, making it tetragonal. Below 543oK, the alloy orders further by means of slight atomic shifts, without diffusion, yielding a complex long-period orthorhom-bic superlattice structure, a2.4-7 Heats of formation of Au3Zn(a2) and AuZn(ß') were measured at 363°K by Biltz et al.8 by aqueous solution calorimetry. Heat capacities of several alloys between 14.9 and 38.4 at. pet Zn in the range from 373" to 723°K were measured by Iwasaki ef al.6 Stoichiometric Au3Zn, however, was not included in the alloys measured, the nearest composition being 26.1 at, pet Zn. Also, the heating rate used for the measurements, 2 deg per min, may not have permitted equilibrium to be reached in the neighborhood of the transformations. Heat contents of solid and liquid AuZn were measured between 488o and 1138°K by Kubaschewski.9 It was decided to determine the ordering energies of Au3Zn and to check on the possible disordering of AuZn by measuring the heats of formation of these alloys at several temperatures. The present paper reports measurements by liquid tin solution calorimetry of the heats of formation of the three phases of Au3Zn at temperatures within their regions of stability, and of AuZn at a low (322°K) and a high (800°K) temperature. EXPERIMENTAL Alloy Preparation and X-Ray Examination. Ten-gram ingots of Au3Zn and AuZn were prepared by melting weighed amounts of gold (99.95 pct Au) and zinc (99.99 pet Zn) together in sealed evacuated Vycor tubes at 1060°K, followed by rapid quenching. The resulting ingots were homogenized at 900°K for 10 days. The Au3Zn alloy lost no weight in preparation, the loss from the AuZn alloy was enough to introduce an uncertainty of only 0.1 at. pet in its composition. Filings for X-ray examination were taken from various parts of each ingot and strain-annealed at 723°K for 20 min in vacuo. The Au3Zn filings were quenched rapidly to retain the disordered phase. Diffraction patterns were determined with an X-ray dif-fractometer using copper Ka radiation.

Employing manganese carbonate ore and zinc oxide dust as material, Mn-Zn compound oxide powder for soft magnetic ferrite was prepared by a serial methods, as follows: leaching by using sulfuric acid, removing aluminium and silicon by neutralization and flocculation method, using ammonium bicarbonate to co-precipitating Mn and Zn, calcinations and washing to removing impurity content. The optimal technical condition was obtained by experiments. The difficulty of removing impurity such as Si, Al, Ca, Mg, from leaching solution was solved. The impurity content in the production meets with the preparation standard of high quality soft magnetic ferrite. The compound oxide powder obtained in the experiment was made into lower power loss magnetic ferrite, the quality of magnetic ferrite meet the standard of PC40 which was established by TDK corporation.

Neutral bifunctional organophosphorus solvent extractants (such as carbamoylmethylphosphonates and carbamoylmethylphosphine oxides) strongly extract lanthanides and actinides and do not extract more than 40 other elements from mineral acids. Because of their excellent properties they have been found useful for F-element recovery and purification processes. A brief overview of the lanthanide and actinide extraction chemistry of these reagents will be given.

A new high-temperature soft soldering system has been developed by the Bureau of Mines for use on copper, copper alloys, and low-carbon steel; the method is applicable to automobile radiators and home appliances. The system uses a unique sacrificial metal coating method to promote spontaneous wetting and spreading of zinc and zinc alloy solder: on metallic substrates. The 10-5 to 10-6 cm thick, electroplated or sputtered, sacrificial nickel coating is absorbed by the molten filler alloy during soldering and produces a direct solder-substrate metallic bond. Preliminary measurements on butt joints with copper members give tensile strengths up to 22,000 psi at room temperature using 95 Zn-5 Al alloy as solder. Spontaneous wetting, spreading, and capillary penetration are extremely rapid and produce joints as easily as 50-50 tin-lead solders. Recrystallization or annealing of the wrought copper joint members is negligible at the soldering temperatures of 450° to 490° C and lower. A list of fluxes and solder alloys is included in the report.

Though coal has been mined in this country for more than a century, no systematic effort was ever successfully made to ascertain the total amount produced. The production of the Cumberland Basin, Md., and the shipments from the anthracite fields of Pennsylvania, have been placed upon record, thanks to the intelligence and foresight of Mr. C. Slack in the former case, and to the late Mr. B. Bannan in the latter. For some of the years between 1822 and 1842, the production of the Richmond Basin was reported by Mr. R. C. Taylor, but since that date till the author undertook this work it was impossible to obtain any statement of the production of this field. A few of the newer fields, such as that of Mt. Diablo, Cal., have been fully reported, and a few of the newer States have also had this service performed by some intelligent private individuals; but no statistics of coal production have ever been collected either by the State or General Government, if we except the returns for the years 1869—70 of the census report. During the year 1875, by great exertions, I succeeded in obtaining, and July 3d, 1875, gave in the Engineering and Mining Journal what, " though not an accurate statement of our coal production," was " by far the most full and reliable that had ever been published." Though that report showed the production of bituminous coal to be 23,630,094 gross tons, or about six million tons more than had ever before been reported, it was in reality two and a half million tons below the actual output. The quantitative evaluation of the performance of fill materials placed in gold mine stopes is achieved by (i) measurement of the in-situ load- displacement, or stress-strain, characteristics of the materials; (ii) an objective comparison between the observed fill performance and that predicted from suitable computer modelling techniques; and (iii) objectively comparing conditions in backfilled and conventional stopes. Considerable problems have been experienced with the development of sufficiently robust instrumentation which can be installed within filled pad- docks and give reliable information over a long period of time. However, at most mines where backfill performance is being monitored, it has been possible to correlate stress measurements within the filled paddocks with strain measurements adjacent to the paddocks. The resultant stress-strain curves agree relatively well with those determined in the laboratory. Measurements in the hangingwall strata of filled and unfilled stopes indicate that the placement of fill does reduce the amount of inelastic convergence due to bed separation. Moreover, in some stopes, the rate of convergence with respect to face advance does reduce to that of the theoretical elastic convergence. Quantification of changes in the conditions at the stope face due to placement of fill has proved difficult. Observations indicate that, provided the fill is placed close to the face (- 5 m), and adequate temporary face support is used, conditions in filled panels are superior. In addition, in filled panels the damage caused by a rockburst in the stope and, particularly, in gullies is generally much less than would be expected in an unfilled stope. To quantify these improvements, parameters such as stope height, face advance and the frequency of falls of ground are being monitored.

Mill flotation tailings impounded at the Gooseberry Mine site between 1976 and 1984 were determined to be an economic source of gold and silver. The tailings would be recoverable by standard heap leach technology in conjunction with feed agglomeration. Metal recovery at 85% gold and 75% silver is attained on properly agglomerated (pelletized) tailings that average 85% -75 µm (-200 mesh). The impounded tailings averaged more than 18% moisture (32% moisture maximum at depth) in place behind the storage dam. Therefore, the mining method, mixing and agglomeration technique, and materials handling practice were major considerations in making this operation a financial success. The Gooseberry Tailings Project is located about 35 km (22 miles) east of Sparks, NV. The project is owned by Asamera Minerals (US) Inc. The company's Western Nevada Gold prop¬erty surrounds the Gooseberry Mine by several miles on all sides. Gold and silver mineralization at the Gooseberry Mine is restricted to a narrow calcite-quartz vein. Calcite makes up more than 80% of the vein throughout the mine. The host rock consists of porphyritic andesites and dacites constituting volcanic flows. The rocks are propylitized or silicified to a varying degree. This ore mineralogy, then, also describes the tailings processed by heap leaching. The Gooseberry tailings were auger sampled in 1983 and again in 1987 after a final lift of 109 kt (120,000 st) was deposited in 1983 and 1984. The total volume behind the dam was calculated from planimeter measurements from tailings surface to original area topography.
