The Beirut Hilton Hotel, which was built in 1975, but never occupied, was imploded on Sunday, July 14, 2002 by Controlled Demolition, Inc. (CDI) of Phoenix, Maryland and their client, Optimal Engineering Consulting & Contracting, SARL, (OECC) of Antelias, Lebanon to make room for a new hotel. Twenty-seven years ago, just days before the grand opening, the Hilton Hotel became the site of fighting in Lebanon’s Civil War. Christian and Muslim militiamen fought room to room for control of the building and other nearby hotels. The Hilton, two other major hotels and other high-rise buildings were ravaged by the fighting. The building was one of the three major hotels badly damaged, but not rebuilt, in Lebanon. Located in the City Center, the Hilton stood out in a major redevelopment area which, in recent years, had erased the scars of the 15 year long Civil Wa r.

Comminution is the single most expensive operation in mineral processing. It consumes about 50% of the energy required for mineral extraction (Agar, 1976). Current comminution technology is both energy-intensive and inefficient. A novel noncontact comminution process concept was developed in this study, whereby selective lib¬eration of minerals from an ore could be potentially achieved. The process involves application of electric and ultrasonic energy to liberate minerals from gangue particles. Introduction The mineral industry is a large user of energy in the US. Energy usage is increasing as the grade of ores processed decreases. It is es¬timated that comminution of ores uses about 32 000 kWh (115 trillion kJ), or 2% of the electric power produced in the US (NMAB-365, 1981). Among other minerals, ce¬ment, iron, and copper processing plants are the largest users of en¬ergy in comminution. Very little of this energy used in conventional grinding (about 1%) is used to gen¬erate new surface. The remainder is wasted (Table 1). Thus, there are substantial energy-saving and economic incentives to improve the efficiency of crushing and grinding techniques for mineral recovery. With an energy efficiency of only 1%, it would seem possible to devise methods to significantly improve comminution technology. This requires that breakage force be applied only where needed, not indiscriminately as in a conven¬tional ball mill (NMAB-365, 1981). Can apparatus and methods be de¬ veloped for large-scale commer¬cial use that allow energy to be fo¬cused at intergranular bounda¬ries? If this can be done, mono¬mineral grains would remain in¬tact and the grinding action would be selective and substantially more efficient. The novel comminution process concept described in this paper uses a combination of electric and ultrasonic energy. This energy breaks the ore and selectively lib¬erates minerals. The process has also been termed a two-stage or electroacoustical comminution process (Goldberger, Epstein, and Parekh, 1982). The mineral grain boundary is usually the weakest area in an ore. By applying electri¬cal energy to the ore, the rock frac¬tures mostly at grain boundaries. At the same time, the electric shock creates secondary hairline fractures in the ore. Additional application of ultrasonic energy to this ore provides further break¬age. The concept was proven on a molybdenum porphyry ore but needs additional study. Technical Background There have been substantial im¬provements in milling machinery and grinding operations, but rela¬tively few attempts have been made to develop alternatives to conventional impact milling. Sev¬eral methods, however, have been investigated that relate to this study. In the early 1970s there was considerable interest in a size re¬duction method known as the Snyder Process (Cavanaugh, 1972). It involved charging coarse ore into a pressure chamber, pressur¬izing with a gas, and activating a quick-opening (15 msec ) dis¬charge valve that connected the chamber to a discharge duct. This allowed solids to fluidize and ac¬celerate, subjecting the material to a variety of impulse phenomena that caused the desired size reduction. Other nonimpact means of achieving breakage and selective size reduction have been de¬scribed in technical and patent literature. Kanellopoulos and Ball (1975) considered using heat to induce thermal stress in quartz¬ite. This would cause cracking and, thus, increase grinding efficiency. The following notes are submitted in the belief that they may interest some of the many owners of mall water-power plants, so generally used in mining-work throughout the West. A small and somewhat primitive quartz-mill was taken over by a leasing company, and a 10-stamp battery was installed. Originally, power had been furnished by a Pelton wheel; but, since the supply of water depended on the rate at which snow was melting 011 the mountains, a steam-plant had been added to help out during cold spells. This auxiliary plant was antiquated and expensive to operate, and, soon after starting up the remodeled mill, it broke down completely; so that it became neceseary to get all the power possible out of the Pelton wheel, with its ever-varying water-supply. The pipe-line, about a quarter of a mile long, was made up of assorted sizes, from 7 to 11 in. in, diameter; and, since it was buried deep under snow, there were no data from which to calculate the theoretical size of the nozzle. The stream being at this time at a low stage, it was important to make the most efficient use of the available water. This was done by using a nozzle large enough to pass the whole supply—taking care, however, to limit the size so as not to lower the water-level in the tank at the head of the pipe-line. As the weather became warmer, the nozzles were gradually enlarged to meet the increasing volume of water; but a point was finally reached where further enlargement only gave decreased power. Evidently the loss from friction had more than balanced the gain from the increased flow through the pipe. However, the area of nozzle that developed the maximum power from the pipe-line had been found. This was used; and the surplus water was allowed to run to waste at the head of the line.

Powered dust-filtering helmets (dust helmets) have become increasingly prevalent in the underground mine environment in recent years. Many longwall operations use dust helmets to reduce the respirable dust exposures of miners required to work downwind of crusher, roof support and shearer operations. While continuous mining sections are usually less dusty, use of diesel equipment represents a new potential health problem. The U.S. Bureau of Mines recently conducted a study to determine the efficiency of a dust helmet on diesel-size particulate. Two underground evaluations were conducted on continuous mining sections that were using diesel haulage vehicles. Model No. AH21 Racal airstream helmets equipped with AS22-3 prefilters, AS23-3 main filters and AS60476 tyvek full-face seals were tested. Helmets were placed on mannequin heads and mounted in the ram car cabs. Andersen Model 298 (eight-stage) personal cascade impactors were used to sample air inside and outside of the helmet. Impactor stages 8 and the final filters were analyzed to determine submicrometer (0 - 0.93 µm) particle concentrations. Results from this study showed that the dust helmet was 94% (± 3% at 95% confidence level) efficient on submicrometer particles. Typically, very little coal dust is observed in the submicrometer size range, therefore, these particles were assumed to be from diesel exhaust. Results from this study indicate that proper use of the dust helmet on continuous mining sections that are using diesel haulage vehicles may be beneficial to the health of miners.

DEPENDENCY on foreign sources for many mineral raw materials is a characteristic of our economy which is becoming painfully evident. Although investment in foreign mining projects has increased, it has not kept up with the growing demand for foreign minerals. The sphere of American investment capital in mining ventures abroad has been severely limited by the rise of nationalism in many underdeveloped countries. Consequently, we can look back over half a century in which mining investment, exclusive of petroleum, has increased by 50 pct whereas other American investments abroad have multiplied by better than 300 pct. Investment in foreign mining or petroleum encounters different problems than capital investment for other industries. It is rarely invested in industrialized nations. Most of it goes to countries with expanding frontiers, like Canada, or to underdeveloped nations like Liberia. It must be used for building communities, recruiting and training labor, and establishing lines of communication and transportation. These complications are an accepted part of the mining game. However, the most complex problem is in those countries which consider mineral exploitation a usurpation of the people's natural heritage. This is a characteristic of the young government existing by a tenuous balance of power in an underdeveloped nation. American mining capital understandably has shunned these nations as being poor investment risks. However, they possess minerals which are needed by industry. Our government has attempted to stimulate mineral supplies beyond those provided from abroad by private capital. ECA, now under DMPA, makes loans to foreign mining companies. Since the ECA program cannot be expected to continue indefinitely, Point IV seems to be the logical next step to encourage foreign countries to fill our shortages. However, only 1 pct of the $35 million budget provided in the first year for Point IV was alloted for mining programs. Considering the need for minerals and the difficulties of procuring them by private investment, a larger share is needed and justifiable. Those who have been engaged in foreign mining can vouch for the fact that it takes many decades to teach the complex technology and economics of mining to the natives of under-developed countries. For this reason Point IV must be considered a long range program. Mineral requirements for the present must be met by more direct measures. Encouragement of private investment in foreign mining by such incentives as tax relief on profits from foreign sources, international bank-borrowing facilities for private capital, and diplomatic assistance in encouraging foreign countries to cooperate are imperative for our future mineral security.

INTRODUCTION TO SAMPLING THEORY Before specifically discussing mineral sampling and sampling procedures, let us briefly consider broader and more universal concepts of modem sampling theory. A sample is de- fined as a representative part or a single item from a larger whole, being drawn for purpose of inspection or shown as evidence of quality. In modem theory the sample is a part of a statistical population whose properties are studied to gain information about the whole. The theory of sampling is built around the concept that if enough representative units of a larger overall population are selected without bias, the average value of the units will approximate that of the total population. Modem theory attempts to answer the question of how many samples are enough, given certain limits and constraints, and seeks to apply methods of sample selection and of estimation that provide, at the lowest possible cost, estimates that are precise enough for the purposes at issue. In order to meet these objectives the designer of a sample survey must rely heavily upon statistical theory. Statistics has been defined as the collection, presentation, analysis, and interpretation of numerical data. Statistical methods are primarily concerned with making valid inferences about a population based upon samples taken from the population. For most statistical applications, the total sample is in terms of number of items, attributes, or things; whereas mineral samples are usually in terms of weight or volume of mineral particles. Certain steps are involved in a well designed sample survey without regard to the particular field of application. Because the desired characteristics of an unmined mineral deposit can- not be known other than by sampling, we will consider these principle steps in terms of a mineral sample survey: 1) Clear definition of the objectives of the survey. In the case of mineral sampling this step is so apparent as to be almost ridiculous. However, it is surprising how often the overall objective of a sampling program is overlooked when decisions are made on a day-today basis. 2) Definition of the population to be sampled. The word population is used to designate the aggregate from which the sample is chosen. A sampling program may be designed to determine the grade of a single stope within a mine, the grade of a particular zone within a complex ore body, or the total value and extent of a mineral deposit. Industrial Engineering in the industrial world is a relatively new field, having been conceived about the turn' of the century by Frederick W. Taylor, who was not satisfied with the hit-or-miss methods of evaluation and estimation. Through crude Industrial Engineering techniques never before used, he completely changed the bricklaying industry so that work accomplished was more than doubled. To help us better understand what we mean by Industrial Engineering, I think a very simple definition Is in order. Industrial Engineering is a scientific approach to problems in cost, production and operations: and is designed to provide a means of increasing producitivity and reducing costs through standards measurement and standardization of the best methods, practices and equipment, There are many complicated definitions, but pure and simply, it all boils down to providing the means for increasing productivity and reducing the cost. Industrial Engineering has been applied in manufacturing since Frederick W. Taylor?s time and in the last 20 years has grown in stature by leaps and bounds. It is a basic function of successful manufacturing companies and is an accepted fool firmly entrenched in manufacturing organizations. You may know of some successful manufacturing companies that do not employ Industrial Engineers as such, but someone in that organization is doing Industrial Engineering work. They have standards and controls whether they call it Industrial Engineering or not. The manufacturing industry has benefited from this tool; other wise, it would have been discontinued long ago.

Laboratory tests were conducted to determine the technical feasibility of separating anthracite particles from a water-anthracite slurry by atomizing the water and removing the resulting mist in an air current. Products containing 21 percent or less moisture were obtained from slurries made with minus 60-mesh anthracite. Typical recoveries ranged between 67 and 79 percent of the feed when the slurries were atomized in air currents with velocities below 70 ft/min.

URANIUM plant operations of the Kerr-McGee Oil Industries at Shiprock, N. M., began in December 1954. As originally designed, the plant treated Plateau carnotite ores by the acid cure process, which dissolved both uranium and vanadium minerals. After 16 hr of acid curing, the ore was conveyed to an agitator and leached for 2 hr in acid liquor at a pH of 1.0. The leach pulp was then separated at 100 mesh in a classifier, the sands continuing through a washing classifier circuit and the slimes going to a countercurrent decantation system of four thickeners.

"Gravity separation is a key technology in the recovery of a range of mineral ores including coal, tin, tungsten and tantalum. One of the problems associated with gravity concentration is that recovery is traditionally lower than for other separation techniques such as the flotation of base metals. Any improvements in recovery will, therefore, have a significant effect on the economics of operations of this type. More accurate, robust modelling of gravity separators is one means of achieving greater recoveries. Furthermore, better modelling can lead to more informed equipment selection and process design for potential economic deposits.Previous models for gravity separation equipment have typically relied on simple metal mass balances from samples of the separated products. However, with advances in technology there is a ready availability of analytical instruments for the automated quantitative determination of mineralogy. Instruments such as the Mineral Liberation Analyser and QEMSCAN make it possible to estimate particle size and density (related to mineral liberation and association) which are the primary factors in gravity separation. Models produced using quantitative mineralogy of feed streams will be potentially superior to those produced historically.This paper describes test work undertaken on a wet shaking table using a synthetic ore. The objective of this test work was to develop a model to predict the effect of changes in feed ore characteristics on shaking table performance by measuring quantitatively the mineralogy of the feed material. Particles were divided into size/density classes based on the results of QEMSCAN analyses.It was found that it was possible to use data from QEMSCAN to predict the recovery of size/density classes and to predict the effect of changes in the relative abundances of these classes on the separation. This model can potentially be used to adjust operating variables to maximise grade and recovery by monitoring the input feed. Care was needed when utilising QEMSCAN data to ensure representivity."

There are numerous advantages in replacing lead-based anodes with mixed metal oxide (MMO) coated anodes in copper electrowinning; for example, lower energy consumption, improved working conditions for operators and less environmental impact. Since 2012, Permascand AB in Ljungaverk, Sweden has evaluated Permascand coated titanium anodes in copper electrowinning pilot trials at Glencore Nikkelverk in Kristiansand, Norway. The investigation has proceeded in three different steps (Phase I, II and III). In Phase I, different Permascand coatings, electrode structures and coating methods were investigated. The results showed that improved current distribution, lower energy consumption and longer service life could be obtained with expanded mesh electrode structure in a box configuration compared to rod anodes in a single-mode construction. In addition, improved current distribution and less coating wear was found when electrostatic spray coating was used instead of brush (manual) coating. It was also found that the extrapolated service life from controlled lab experiments at 200 A/m2 was much shorter compared to what was experimentally obtained in copper electrowinning pilot trials at similar current densities. This was mainly attributed to different coating failure mechanisms in lab and industrial copper production. INTRODUCTION Traditionally lead-based anodes have been used in copper in electrowinning due to lower cost. But there are many advantages in replacing lead-based anodes with mixed metal oxide (MMO) coated titanium anodes in copper electrowinning, such as lower energy consumption, higher corrosion resistance, improved working conditions for operators and less environmental impact. Still, many facilities are using lead-based anodes, although the progression of using metal oxide coated anodes in copper electrowinning has slightly increased (Robinson et al., 2012).

Selective photo reduction, using the semiconductor TiO2 under UV irradiation, has been investigated as a possible recovery and/or separation method for the PGM's rhodium, palladium and platinum. The effect of pH value and concentration of the sacrificial reducing agent (ethanol) on the rate of reduction of Rh (III), Pd (II) and Pt(IV) ions have been determined separately for these ions as well as for some mixtures. Conditions favourable for the reduction and adsorption (or precipitation) on TiO2 have been established. It has been found that already deposited Pt or Pd metal promotes reduction of Rh (III) ions at a pH value where it would not otherwise be reduced. A method for the separation of a mixture comprising Rh (III), Pd(II) and Pt (IV), based on photo reduction and adsorption on the TiO2, is proposed.

Is recent years, exploration and development by diamond drilling has become a popular attack on the problem of finding new ore shoots and developing extensions of known shoots. Diamond drilling has been used in recent years in extensive sampling of disseminated copper deposits, in preference to churn drilling. At the Harvard gold mine, near Jamestown, California, Philip R. Bradley, Jr., general superintendent, reports that: "The Harvard work was a singular example of the reliance that can be placed on diamond drilling in evaluating an ore body." Drilling at the Harvard mine will be discussed in a subsequent section of the paper. So popular has diamond drilling become, indeed, that many who have had slight experience with drilling are inclined to regard it as a cheap cure-all. This paper proposes to show some of the limitations on the application of drilling and some of the steps that should be followed in drilling programs to obtain reliable results. Cost oF Drilling Drilling has the advantage, over shaft sinking and drifting, of lower cost and greater speed. As compared with churn drilling, the advantage of bringing up a coherent sample instead of fine cuttings for a sample is obvious. Diamond drilling is generally more expensive, however, and more engineering effort is required in combining the average of core and sludge samples. Exploration of drift walls by hammer drills to a depth of less than 30 ft. is generally cheaper than diamond drilling, but beyond this depth the diamond drill is cheaper and more efficient. The principal factor in determining cost of drilling is the character of the ground drilled. Broken ground with many fissures is most expensive to drill. Hard ground is less of a problem with diamond drills than with ordinary machine drills. Hardness or softness affects only the speed of drilling. Caving, easily washed, sandy or clayey ground requires continual cementing and casing, which is the greatest cost problem. Thus, soft, incompetent ground is more costly to drill than hard, massive ground. Cost of drilling per foot in good to fair ground varies from less than $I per foot, achieved in some districts in Ontario, the Mother Lode, and Missouri, to $5 per foot in many western states. In bad drilling ground, costs may range from $5 to $15 or more per foot, thus approaching the cost of drifting. Other factors that increase the cost per foot are: I. Short total length of hole drilled, so that the cost of moving in crews and equipment must be spread over a relatively few feet. 2. Cost of drilling per foot increases with depth beyond about 500 ft.. as more time is consumed in pulling rods' 3. Cost of preparing drilling stations, getting air underground to stations? etc' 4. Inaccessibility and lack of water on the job make for higher costs.

Most of the bauxite deposits in Europe belong to the karst type. They are located mainly ill Southern Europe along the Mediterranean Sea and in the Ural Mountains. Lateritic bauxite deposits occur on the Russian Platform, in Poland, Northern Ireland and in Turkey. Tikhvin-type deposits arc found on the Russian Platform. Bauxite formation in Europe started in the Middle Devonian. The main bauxite forming period was the Upper Cretaceous. Very few bauxites are younger than Eocene. Most deposits are covered by overburden of up to 1000 m. Prospecting is carried out by drilling. Several geophysical methods are used to detect the hidden deposits. Geostatistical methods were introduced in several countries for evaluation of the reserves and the geometry of the deposits. Data on bauxite production are given for 1982 and since the beginning of mining in Europe.

This paper is a tribute to the late Dr Donald Martin Hausen as a father of applied mineralogy. His dedication to promoting the field through technical societies and through his professional work was outstanding, and his activities as a humanitarian are noteworthy. Dr HausenÆs involvement in technical societies included organising and conducting the only ICAM congress that was held in the USA, co-founding and nurturing the Process Mineralogy Committee within the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum Engineers, and participating in CAM, the International Mineral Processing Congress, as well as other technical societies. The Process Mineralogy Committee that he co-founded has continuously organised annual meetings in the USA by conducting a series of sessions, and 17 books on the proceedings from those sessions have been published. As an applied mineralogist Dr Hausen solved many problems in exploitation and processing of minerals, metals and materials, especially gold. He helped to find many Carlin-type gold orebodies by outlining targets using alteration halos as determined by X-ray diffractometry, and he defined mineral characteristics that affected gold metallurgy and cyanidation. It is also noteworthy that Dr Hausen and his wife, Mary, opened their arms and home to many foster children and were instrumental in their placement in many homes. They also sponsored refugees from south-east Asia, taught them English, housed them, and provided constant support until the refugees became responsible and independent US citizens.

Silver contained in zinc calcines undergoes several phase changes as it proceeds through the leaching circuit of a roast-leach-electrowin zinc plant. In this study, the flotation response of silver, from leach residues prepared under a variety of carefully controlled operating conditions in the pilot plant has been examined. Flotation of neutral leach residue is shown to be technically viable and to merit consideration for those plants without a high-acid leach circuit, but having significant silver values in the feed. Residue leach conditions must be kept slightly acidic to promote the formation of Ag2S, (AgCu) 2S and Ag2S rims on residual unroasted sphalerite, while simultaneously avoiding the hydrolysis of soluble iron, which depresses silver recovery and grade. Factors to be considered during integration of a flotation process into an electrolytic zinc plant are discussed.

High-calcium limestones occur in the upper part of the New Market Formation, of Lower Middle Ordovician age, in Franklin and Cumberland Counties, Pennsylvania. The high-calcium facies of the New Market Formation is represented by sublithographic limestone or vaughanite, which probably formed in quiet water; low-energy environments such as intershoal lagoons, or in protected bays similar to the present-day Florida Bay environment. Rapid facies changes are characteristic of the strata. The better grade of stone lies in the upper 100 to 125 feet of the New Market Formation and averages 95-97% calcium carbonate. Silica and magnesia are about equal in amount as impurities. One high-calcium belt extends from the Maryland state line through Chambersburg and Newville to beyond Carlisle. The strata in this belt are structurally complex, which requires careful field study' and core-drilling prior to exploitation. Stone suitable for blast-furnace flux is present in relatively large amounts, but stone for open-hearth use or portland cement requires more selective quarrying.

The purpose of this work was to Investigate the rate at which coal is delivered from the underground working face by gathering arm type loaders as employed on continuous mining machines, to identify the factors - geometrical , geological, mechanical, or procedural - which affect the delivery rate, and to develop quantitative rate-descriptive equations for the loading function. The mathematical techniques employed were factor analysis and multiple linear regression. It was determined that the coal-cutting function of the continuous mining machine is the factor that primarily Influences the loading function The geometrical factors -the dimensions of the work area In relation to the dimensions of the mining machine -were the factors of secondary influence. Fifty-five percent of the experimental variation in the loading function was explained in terms of the six most prominent Independent variables. It is expected that this work will be useful In operations-research studies as applied to underground coal mining, and with refinement will enable mine planners to select equipment based on the operating characteristics of the equipment and the mining conditions.
