Table 19 and figure 7 show the number of fires and fire injuries for surface coal mines by state during 1990-1999. Table 19 also shows by state the risk rates, employees' working hours, lost workdays, and coal production. For surface coal mines, 215 fires occurred in 21 states during 1990-1999. Ninety-four of those fires caused 93 injuries and I fatality (the yearly average was 21.5 fires and 9.3 fire injuries). Fourteen fires and seven injuries involved contractors. The Ewhr value was 729 x 10° hr (In = 0.026), the CP value was 6,355 x 10° st (Fn = 0.034), and the LWD value was 8,141. Kentucky had the most fires and fire injuries (45 fires and 23 injuries), followed by Pennsylvania (33 fires and 14 injuries), West Virginia (25 fires and 14 injuries), and Indiana (20 fires and 8 injuries). Among these states, Pennsylvania had the highest fire risk rate value (Frr=0.145), while Kentucky had the highest injury risk rate value (In 0.041).

THE ease and value of the application of spectrum analysis to industrial chemistry appears to be appreciated in few of the large works laboratories of this country. For 8 years, this analysis has been of great value to the authors in both analytical and metallurgical work. To the analyst the complete qualitative analysis of an unknown alloy, revealed by a spectrogram, is a sure basis for the planning of the most direct and rapid method of attack. As the determination of each element proceeds, the purity of precipitates may be checked as often as desired. The spectrograph proves invaluable in the recognition of impurities, the separation of which would entail a lengthy and difficult procedure, or when the weight of an unknown is less than is necessary to complete the desired determinations. A few hundredths of a gram will usually suffice for spectrographic analysis. In the separation of the rarer elements, the spectrograph will show, with precision, the point where each step has been successful. In zinc of certain classes, indium, gallium, and germanium have been isolated in this way; the presence of antimony in lake coppers has been proved; and bismuth has been detected in zinc and in alloys where the presence of a few thousandths of a per cent. would be harmful. An antimony precipitate in a delicate determination may contain a considerable proportion of tin or arsenic, both of which will be revealed. The spectrograph is consequently important to the metallurgist as well as to the analyst.

THE object of this investigation was to make a comprehensive study of the degassing of molybdenum in order to determine how rigorous a treatment was necessary to completely, remove sorbed gases from molybdenum electrodes in vacuum tubes. Some work has also been done with tungsten, nickel and carbon. As a logical development of this work it has been shown that the gas is present throughout the body of the metal and a study has been made of the solubility of nitrogen in molybdenum and tungsten and the rate of diffusion of nitrogen through molybdenum has been calculated. Tests were made on molybdenum from all the commercial sources and no difference was discovered in the nature of the gases present, the amounts or the ease of removal. The reason for this was apparent when a study was made of the manner in which gases are absorbed by gas-free molybdenum. It is necessary to heat molybdenum to 1760° C. in a vacuum of the order of 0.001 micron for a time which varies lineally with the thickness, in order to obtain a condition in which no further gas is evolved by the sample. A sample so degassed can be handled and sub-sequently assembled in a tube and then degassed readily. The gases obtained from molybdenum are carbon monoxide and nitrogen, the nitrogen being the more difficult to remove..

The cementation of gold on to copper and zinc in ammoniacal solutions has been studied using rotating disc electrodes. The cathodic reduction of aurous ammine was studied on a gold rotating disc electrode and the anodic dissolution of copper and zinc was studied in the absence of aurous ammine. The cementation rate was found to be a first order with respect to the concentration of aurous ammine and to be proportional to the square root of the disc rotating speed. Based on the results obtained, it was concluded that the cementation reaction was controlled by mass transfer of aurous ammine to the reaction surface under the experimental conditions.

This report3/ gives the reconnaissance of a reconnaissance of the mining districts in Churchill County, Nev., made in the fall of 1938 and spring of 1938 All of the mining districts in the county were visited, but no attempt has been made to include all the mines and prospects within the area; inclusion or omission of a property in this paper has no bearing on its merits, The report gives the situation of the various districts, mineral production, and ownership of properties; describes the ore deposit, mines, and prospects; contains information on past and current activity; and includes other data likely to be useful to those interested in the development of our mineral resources. The various district, were named when they were organized for purposes of record and regulation. When established, the districts embraced large areas n without well- defined borders, so that the names have little geographical significance.

INTRODUCTION FOR a number of years the senior author has been interested in the various geologic and engineering problems involved in the development of the petroliferous districts of northeastern Mexico, having in a previous paper 1 endeavored to present a summarized statement of the information relating to the geology and soil resources of this region. Of the many interesting geologic phenomena, perhaps those which have been the object of more speculation relate to the igneous intrusions which, in places, have a controlling influence on the accumulation of oil in commercial quantities, a relationship which has been tentatively explained by various observers with as many interestingly different views. The authors of the present paper aim to record, in the course of a general discussion of the various viewpoints, some additional data, and present further tentative conclusions with a view to rounding out an up-to-date summary of the subject. The greater part of the area in question lies in the State of Vera Cruz, only a northwest fraction being in the State of San Luis Potosi. Vera Cruz is bounded on the north by the State of Tamaulipas, the northernmost of the Mexican States along the Gulf. The topography of the States of Tamaulipas and Vera Cruz and of Texas and Louisiana to the north, is controlled by the Gulf coastal plain which in northern Vera Cruz has an average width of about 60 miles, the transitional topography between that of the rugged flanks of the Sierra and the lowlands of the coast being made up of a series of terraces and irregular hills and valleys.

The Mintek Thermal Magnesium Process (MTMP) was successfully demonstrated in November 2004. The pilot plant was operated continuously for 8 days, during which about 30 tons of magnesium producing recipe was smelted in a DC (direct-current) arc furnace at a feed rate of 525 kg/h. The furnace was operated at power levels of 700 to 850 kW, resulting in slag tapping temperatures of 1600 to 1700°C. Magnesium extraction averaged 77 per cent and was as high as 85 per cent during good extraction periods. The furnace generated 70 to 85 kg/h magnesium vapour that was delivered to the condenser where the temperature was controlled at 680 to 720°C. The novel condenser captured the magnesium in a liquid state, which was tapped periodically as required. In total, 15 magnesium-tapping operations were carried out, proving that online magnesium tapping can be consistently performed without any major difficulty. About 3500 kg of crude magnesium was produced with a quality that was similar to, if not better than, that of the Magnetherm?s crude metal. The condensation efficiency averaged 85 per cent, and peaked at 87 per cent, which exceeded the target of 80 per cent set for the pilot scale. A brief magnesium market study was also carried out. Magnesium demand is expected to keep on growing by 6 to 8 percent over the next 10 years and could reach 2 million tons by the year 2020. The growth will be mainly in the die-casting sector for light-weight automotive applications. China is likely to remain the dominant supplier of primary magnesium but competitively priced non-Chinese magnesium producers will be needed to sustain the anticipated growth of 6 to 8 per cent over the next 10 years. In addition, a prefeasibility study was undertaken for a commercial plant. The study confirmed the relatively low capitalcosts of the MTMP process, as well as the competitiveness of theoperating costs, as compared to the industrial electrolytic process.

Chromium has a wide range of applications, including as an alloy addition in various steels and also as a corrosion resistance coating. Carbothermal reduction of chromite ore (FeCr2O4) in a submerged arc furnace is an important industrial process for extracting chromium, but the energy consumption is excessive. It is suggested that one area for future research is the low temperature carbothermic solid state reduction of chromite to produce an intermediate product, which can subsequently be upgraded to ferrochromium. In this regard, a thermodynamic model has been developed to investigate this process and the effects of temperature, carbon additions and ore composition on the recovery of chromium and the grade of the ferrochromium, have been studied. Further development of the model may allow it to be applied to the simulation of other processes for the recovery of chromium from chromite ores.

The evolution of the American Petroleum Institute (API) design method for axial capacity of driven piles in siliceous sands is explored, and complemented with an overview of how changes in offshore site investigation practice have increased the level of knowledge with respect to vertical variability of soil characteristics. Increased use of the cone penetration test (CPT) provides near continuous profiles of soil type and strength which can be used in calculation methods that address variation in local shaft friction rather than the API method which seems to have initially been based on observations of average shaft friction in relatively uniform sand deposits. Development of a formulation for CPT correlations to axial pile capacity in sand is discussed, along with implications to existing factors of safety used in routine design.

The ever increasing demand on land use has led to large areas of land being considered for development, which because of past mining activities are covered by substantial depths of fill materials. This paper examines the problem faced with the development of land infilled with open cast mining backfill, in predicting the behaviour of the fill upon development. To be able to design foundations suitable to withstand the movements that occur within open cast backfills or design a backfilling operation that produces land suitable for a proposed after development, a means of predicting backfill settlement is required. Factors critical to this prediction are the timing of backfilling operations, the compactive state of the backfill and the inundation of the backfill. The analysis of a considerable quantity of data collected from the monitoring of backfilling operations and backfill movement at a range of open cast coal sites located within the UK has given the authors a better understanding of how open cast backfills behave in terms of long-term creep settlement, collapse settlement and how these are effected by backfill scheduling. This knowledge has been encoded into a program running under Microsoft Windows that enables a user to make settlement predictions for a point, a given section or area or for the whole site. Differential settlements, critical to any development design, can also be determined between any two points taking into consideration the heterogeneous nature of open cast backfills. The program was tested with data from an open cast coal site in the UK. Compaction monitoring during the placement of the backfill material enabled a model of the backfill to be constructed taking into account backfill properties and scheduling. This model, taken as input into the program, enabled future backfill settlement predictions to be made. A comparison is given between these results and actual settlements obtained from a short-term settlement monitoring scheme.

This paper, which describes the milling practice at the Page concentrator of the Federal Mining and Smelting Co., is one of a series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines. The Page mine and mill are located on Silver Creek, 3 miles west of Kellogg, Idaho, and 1 mile south of United States Highway No. 10. Supplies and concentrates are hauled by truck over an automobile road which connects Highway No. 10 with the property. The concentrator has capacity to treat 300 tons of ore per day and utilizes all-flotation methods of treatment. Power is supplied from the main line of the Washington Water Power Co. which runs from Spokane, Wash., to Kellogg, Idaho. Water is obtained from the mine and also from a well which is situated 1 mile distant from the concentrator and about 600 feet in elevation below the concentrator.

ANON-CATARACTING (N-C) ball mill is so operated that the balls are not thrown in-ward at the top of their paths. The result is to maintain, in the mill, a quiescent pool in which classification will occur at a limiting size corresponding to the pulp density. N-C operation is produced by effecting proper relationship among mill speed, ball diameter, volume of ball load, and pulp density. Such operation is typified by the primary ball-mill operation of the Tennessee Copper Company, Copper-hill, Tenn., and the Cleveland Cliff Iron Company, near Ishpeming, Mich.

Fibre-reinforced geopolymer concrete (FRGC) contains no Portland cement or steel reinforcement, but instead uses synthetic fibre reinforcement and a geopolymer binder. The use of geopolymer binder in lieu of Portland cement reduces the concrete’s embedded energy (CO2 emissions) whilst the use of synthetic fibres eliminates the issue of reinforcement corrosion, thus enhancing the overall long-term durability of concrete. This paper presents the development of FRGC during a three-year project funded by the Victorian Science Agenda and a consortium of five organisations. The work involved laboratory and field trials and the production of prototype tunnel segments that have been subject to durability and fire testing.FRGC has exceeded the performance of the Portland cement-based control mix in terms of flexural strength, chloride diffusion, water sorptivity and drying shrinkage. Furthermore, the FRGC segments subjected to a simulated hydrocarbon fire test did not exhibit explosive spalling; however, the creep of FRGC was approximately three times that of the steel fibre-reinforced Portland cement-based control mix. The compressive strength and tensile splitting strength of the FRGC were also lower than the control mix. These differences need to be allowed for in the design using FRGC.Prototype bolted tunnel segments of up to 0.8?t mass have been produced from FRGC using standard production techniques and ambient curing. These were successfully produced within a 24-hour production cycle. Cut sections through the segments showed good compaction and even distribution of fibres. The estimated carbon footprint of tunnel segments produced using FRGC is approximately 70 per cent less than that of Portland cement-based segments containing 25 per cent fly ash and steel reinforcement.The results to date indicate that FRGC has the potential to produce a new generation of tunnel segments and, in general, precast concrete products with increased durability and substantially reduced carbon emissions compared to the Portland cement-based concrete with steel reinforcement.A summary of further research carried out by CH2M HILL into a complete elimination of ferrous inserts from segmental concrete tunnel lining is also summarised in this paper. The use of non-ferrous connectors for radial joints in combination with the FRGC technology in the manufacture of tunnel segments will effectively lead to development of a new generation of segmental tunnel lining systems.CITATION:Wimpenny, D, Chappell, M and Wieloch, M, 2014. "The Teniente converter (CT) of the Ventanas Smelter and Refinery of Codelco-Chile has two tuyeres for dry concentrate injection directly into the melt.The diluted phase injection system can feed 15 to 20 kg of concentrate for 1 kg of air, which creates a very abrasive solid/gas phase. The tuyeres commonly used lasted for about 3.5 days due to the accelerated decay of the shell, and 1.5 hours were necessary for the replacement of new ones in the reactor.Tests were carried out with common shell tuyeres with a tungsten based welding cover, and a life span of 28 days was reached, increasing the Teniente converter operational continuity between 1.5 to 2 %."

HAVING produced one ton of concentrate that contains the copper that can profitably be saved or recovered from anywhere between 3 and 60 tons of mine ore, the ore-dressing engineer passes the result of his handiwork over to the metallurgist for smelting. Essentially, the concentrate is a damp mass of finely ground material consisting of copper sulphide minerals; pyrite, the sulphide of iron; and gangue, usually silica and silicates of aluminum. The purpose of smelting is to produce metallic copper and a slag containing the iron and siliceous constituents by pyrometallurgy-the kind of metallurgy that employs fire and heat to produce the chemical reactions through which it attains its object. "Rutile, ilmenite and Al-Ca complex reducer were used to prepare high titanium ferrous alloy by enhanced reduction-SHS method. The effects of the complex reducer compositions and slag types on the enhanced reduction-SHS process were investigated. The high titanium ferrous alloys were characterized by XRD and SEM. The results indicate that the high titanium ferrous alloys consist mainly of TiFe2, AlTi3 and Al2O3. The oxide inclusions exist resulting in directly the high oxygen content and micro-structural defects in the alloys. The titanium and oxygen contents decrease, but the aluminum content in the alloy increases while the mass ratio of calcium in the Al-Ca complex reducers increases. When the mass ratio of Al/Ca in the Al-Ca complex reducer is 6:1, titanium, oxygen and aluminum contents are 63.75%, 3.01% and 10.72% respectively. When the mass ratio of Al/Ca is 5:1 titanium content is 55.00% nearly and aluminum content is higher than 14.00%, but oxygen content is lower than 2.0%.1. IntroductionThe high titanium ferroalloys with 65%~75% titanium have the advantages of low melting point and high titanium content. They are widely used in special steel refining, while they are also a kind of very important quality orientation alloys in the rage of aviation and aerospace. At present, the methods of preparing high titanium ferroalloy include vacuum remelting and thermit reduction. The alloys prepared by the vacuum remelting method have good qualities and low oxygen content, so it is widely used in Russia, Western Europe and other developed countries. In China, there are abundant rutile resources, but waste titanium is lack, therefore, the preparation method is the thermit reduction. But there are many quality defects in the high ferrotitanium alloy, including high oxygen content, unstable quality and so on. In order to improve the qualities of the high titanium ferroalloy, especially to reduce oxygen content, the domestic and overseas have done a lot of further researches. For example, Sichuan E-mei ferroalloy plant and Beijing Nonferrous Metal Research Institute have prepared high titanium ferrous with 73.77% titanium with natural rutile, but the oxygen content is high. Through controlling the quality of raw material, they obtained the better qualities, but the oxygen content is still very high. South Africa Mintek company have prepared high titanium ferrous alloy with low nitrate by plasma heating under the isolation air conditions, but they couldn’t also remove effectively oxygen in the alloy. The oxygen exists in the form of Al2O3 and titanium protoxide. So it can be speculated that except TiO2 not being fully reduced, the no-sufficient alloy-slag separation is the direct reason resulting in high oxygen and poor microstructure. In view of present technical difficulties during preparing high titanium ferroalloy by thermit reduction, this paper proposed a new method of preparing high titanium ferrous with low oxygen by enhanced reduction-SHS with Al-Ca complex reducer. Ca in Al-Ca complex reducer has stronger reductive ability, it can effectively strengthen the reductive degree of TiO2. The slagging agent CaO CaF2 and MgO can effectively reduce the viscosity of Al2O3 slag to improve its liquidities to strengthen alloy-slag separation effects so that to remove inclusions and oxygen. In this paper, effects of slagging agent type on the reduction and the qualities of high-titanium ferroalloy were studied."

The developments in the Russian oil industry during 1935 marked a very definite turning point from the time when the industry was being educated to the modern methods of oil-field finding and development, refining, transportation and marketing, to the time when the industry has thoroughly assimilated the modern technique and is now firmly standing on its own feet, as is shown by the remarkable qualitative, if not quantitative, progress in 1935. The oil industry promises that 1936 will be a record year in every respect with both quantity and quality approaching the desired high levels and standards. More particularly the Soviet Government is beginning to be successful in the development of new fields and such new production in geographically strategical points of the country will be in the coming years a factor of great importance in the industrial life of the country. The most notable achievements of the last year have been: the very successful development of the Ishimbaevo oil field in the Lower Oural-Permian Basin; the discovery and development of several promising oil fields in the Puta district of Azerbaijan, while large flush production of Baku area was extended 50 miles due southwest into the Saliani-Aliat district, where a 3000-bbl. well was completed early in 1936 at Pirsagat. Also, an apparently important discovery was made at Zikh, on the Apsheron Peninsula proper. These discoveries, as well as several important strikes in the deeper producing sands in the older fields of the Apsheron Peninsula, have greatly augmented the proven reserves of Russia and made them available either at the points where transportation facilities were already present or at points not too far distant from major industrial centers of the country. Of course, not all objectives were achieved during the past year, and several major difficulties remain to be solved in the coming years, the more important of which are: (1) supply of equipment and of parts; (2) the unavailability of competent technical men in sufficient numbers, which more particularly affects the distant fields; and (3) the problem of distribution of oil products throughout the country, especially the question of handling the needs of small consuming areas, which, while individually unimportant, in the aggregate require huge distribution.

The study of the plastic deformation and recrystallization of metals has been the subject of many investigations. In regard to the simple deformational processes, such as tension and compression, the early knowledge gained from studies of polycrystalline material has been supplemented by many significant researches on the behavior of single crystals. Unfortunately, this has not been true for more complicated deformational processes. As far back as 1927, G. I. Taylor1 wrote: It is impossible in the present state of knowledge to do more than give a possible reason why (face-centered cubic) crystals set themselves with a (110) direction in the plane of rolling, and at right angles to the direction of rolling. The explanation of why the orientation of the crystal axes round the transverse direction is what it is, must be left till the distortion of metals, and particularly single crystals of metals in the process of rolling, has been studied in greater detail. That this gap in the systematic study of deformation and recrystallization has not yet been filled was indicated by C. H. Samans, who wrote in 1934 that "only four investigations upon cold-rolled single crystals of any of the face-centered cubic metals have been reported in the literature." Of these four studies, only those of S. Tanaka3 and T. Sakaoj4 both of whom worked with aluminum crystals, had quantitative significance. The other two, carried out by F. Wever5 and W. G. Burgers16 were of a qualitative nature. It is our hope that the present investigation may contribute something to the knowledge necessary for a rationalization of the origin of rolling textures in terms of the known behavior of single crystals, and may add pertinent information concerning the recrystallization characteristics of deformed single crystals.
