"The increased costs of underground mining have continually challenged engineers to identify opportunities for alternatives to common approaches to underground development. Considerations to the design of horizontal and vertical development at the Dugald River mine targeted inclined raise boring to reduce horizontal development, not only to reduce cost, but to allow development activities to focus on other areas of the mine.The mine plan consists of 50 raise bored ventilation shafts, of which 17 have been mined to date with diameters ranging from 3.1 m to 5 m and lengths from 30 m to 200 m. The expected performance and stability of these shafts has been determined using methodologies proposed by McCracken and Stacey (1989) and further refined by Peck, Coombes and Lee (2011). Actual raise performances have been collated and compared to a database of raise bore performances across Australia as presented by Coombes, Lee and Peck (2011), and form a database of raise bore performance specific to Dugald River.Opportunities to further optimise the mine plan and reduce costs have seen the introduction of large diameter-inclined raise bored ventilation shafts to minimise the required lateral development to connect the ventilation circuits. Large diameter inclined shafts ranging between 3.1 m and 4.5 m in diameter have been successfully mined with dips down to 70°, reducing the cost of lateral development by more than $1 million over the next two years.Both technical and operational challenges were overcome in the mining of large diameter-inclined raise bores, including modification of: existing methodologies of assessing shaft wall stability for inclined raises. These included variations of the McCracken and Stacey method and the utilisation of the modified stability number (N’) previously developed for stope performance (Potvin, 1988). both the collar and toe development profiles, including the general set-up of the raise bore drill rig to reduce the operational risks associated with angled raises.Due to their success, inclined raises have been designed for subsequent stages of the life-of-mine ventilation system at Dugald River. "In order to expeditiously produce defect-free metallic components in materials processing applications, the relationship between the process parameters and the product properties needs to be well understood while minimizing the production engineering iterations. To achieve this goal, a realistic mathematical formulation of the process should be carried out and an appropriate numerical modeling of various phenomena occurring in such process should be implemented. The materials processing of transforming the molten material into a finished metallic component involves fluid flow and solidification/melting. In the present paper, a finite element based analysis of the fluid flow ·and solidification/melting phenomena in cavities is presented and the various issues in modeling these phenomena are discussed. These transport phenomena play an important role in determining the final characteristics and material properties of the part by affecting the formation of defects and microstructure. A realistic numerical modeling of these phenomena can significantly reduce the rejection rates during the process and can increase the quality of the final product.IntroductionDuring the intelligent materials processing of various metallic components, it is often required to have a thorough knowledge of the behavior of the transport phenomena involved in this process. This is due in large to the coupling that exists between the transport phenomena and the final material properties of the components produced during materials processing. This interrelationship demands that the pertinent transport phenomena in the form of fluid flow and solidification/melting be studied and predicted accurately. In many materials processing applications, the fluid flow is in the form of either a forced convection free surface flow intended to fill a cavity or a natural convection flow resulting from the gravity when the cavity is filled. In either case, the phase change in the form of solidification/melting is also involved in order to complete the process. However, the thermal history during this phase change has a direct impact on the material properties of the final part and the possible defect formation that may be involved. This thermal history itself is dependent on the nature of the fluid flow during the earlier stages of the process. As such, there is a coupling between the fluid flow, phase change, microstructure, and defect formation in the resulting component. It is therefore necessary to analyze these phenomena in order to find optimum methods to produce good quality parts by minimizing the defects that may be generated. Such an analysis can result in the development of appropriate numerical models for the process that can facilitate the economical and timely manufacturing of various components with high consistency. The present paper discusses the issues related to the transport phenomena encountered during materials processing of components engineered largely by using various combination of convective fluid flow and solidification/melting in cavities."

Results of the application of the micro-gravity method in predicting rock bursts and rock mass deformations are discussed. Research was done in the Daisy black coal mine, Upper Silesia, Poland, during 1979-1980. At that time, microgravity investigations helped increase the safety of coalbed exploitation in progress. During the first stage of exploitation, a mining shock of 107 J energy was predicted in a region where 40 miners worked.

Por tal motivo, se utiliza el método de voladura controlada para verificar los efectos de voladura y así evitar que las fuerzas inherentes de las paredes no sean dañadas. Asimismo, el texto describe las técnicas que se aplican a dicho procedimiento: pre-corte, amortiguación, de pared uniforme y perforación lineal, las cuales son aplicadas para crear bajas concentraciones de energía del explosivo de la pared del tajo.

Introduction Coal cleaning may be taken as meaning the separation of coal-as-mined into two or more fractions. Coal cleaning includes coal washing, together with any other means used in the ultimate preparation of coal prior to shipment (as coal) . The method of coal cleaning devised for any given mine must be one which is based entirely on the economic results obtainable. The installation of a high-cost and complex washing plant, designed to produce a low-ash dean coal, at the highest possible recovery, may be unsound practice. A crude 'roughing' washer may be the best result of sound engineering and operating consideration, and in some cases coal cleaning should be confined entirely to preparation at the face. Consideration of complete costs, to the point where the coal is actually sold, may show that certain seams are workable or not workable. Of the seams found workable, extraction of the whole or parts of the seam may be decided on. The portion to be extracted may contain rock or bone partings, which must be removed. It may be good practice to mine the extra portion and remove the objectionable materials by surface washing; or it may be that such materials should be removed underground, even at an increased mining cost. For instance, in some of the steeply pitching seams of the Alberta Crow's Nest Pass district, the removal of bone and rock at the face may be almost impossible under the usual 'up the pitch' or 'angle' mining methods, but possible by mining across the pitch so that the material to be rejected can be removed and gobbed. Again, if a complete seam is being extracted, investigation may show marked differences between top coal and bench coal, and if sufficient mine cars are being loaded from a chute at one time, the fact that such a place is working top or bench coal at the time may be reflected by peaks in ash content or size proportions at the ripple. It may be very effective coal preparation to smooth out such peaks.

Atmospheric air on a moisture free volume basis consists of approximately 21 per cent oxygen. The current minimum threshold for oxygen in Australia is 19.5 per cent. Atmospheric air generally will also contain water vapour and will also pick up further moisture as it flows around a mine ventilation network. This paper details the results of a study to determine how much oxygen depletion can occur due to the sole impact of increasing the moisture content of air and the potential impacts of this on ventilation system design. The study shows that the moisture content can have a significant impact on the oxygen concentration in mine air. The main factors controlling the impact are the barometric pressure, dry bulb temperature and relative humidity of the air.CITATION:Tuck, M A, 2015. Interaction between mattes having various compositions and solutions with a wide range of free acid and non-ferrous metals concentration have been studied in terms of chemistry, mechanism and kinetics. The solution acidity and oxidizers to reducers ratio in the matte-solution-gas phase system have been demonstrated to be the major factors determining the process behaviour. It was found that the types of copper and nickel secondary sulphides resulted from nonferrous metals precipitation from solution, depend on of the solution and initial matte composition. Based on these studies, technologies of matte leaching and nonferrous metal precipitation in the form of rich sulphide concentrates are developed.

Lateral force rsistance of piles is analytically investigated by dividing the pile length to 3 segments. The first segment (Zone I) models the load eccentricity with respect to the soil and the pile-deck connection, using a third degree differential equation representing the shear variation along the pile. The soil is assumed to be uniform, homogeneous with an elastic-perfectly plastic behavior. The Top soil layer (Zone II) is assumed to be stressed beyond the elastic limit. A simple 4th degree differential equation represents this zone. The soil resistance is assumed to vary linearly with depth (or surcharge). The pile deformation and soil behavior determines the plastic zone length. In zone III the soil is assumed to behave elastically, hence its resistance is proportional to its deformation. A linear 4th degree differential equation is employed in this zone. The compatibility conditions are satisfied on each boundary. Maximum allowable moment and shear are investigated throughout the pile as the basic limiting criteria on lateral force capacity. In this paper the soil coefficients are taken from a proposal by ref(3), and the results are compared with the soil response as determined by the P-Y method as recommended by ref(2).

in this paper, the theory of elasticity has been applied to the rock about a deep well, It is assumed that the rock has a modulus of . elasticity and a Poisson's ratio and that the theory of elasticity applies. It is necessary to know or assume the state of stress existing in the rock before it is penetrated by the well drill. The application of this theory indicates that stress concentration of shear, tensions, and compressions about the bore hole are of a high order. This is particularly true when a horizontal compressive stress exists in one direction only in the formation before drilling. If such an initial state of stress exists before drilling, then the rock will have stress concentrations of both tension and compression at the same elevation and of such magnitude that failure of the rock is likely. Accompanying these is a shearing stress of large proportion which is likely to produce spalling of the well walls. Internal pressure applied to the well bore will relieve the extreme compression but not the tension and has little effect upon the shear. Plastic deformation of the rock through a geological time tends to mitigate the stress concentrations. IntroductioN It has long been known that the stresses about holes and re-entrant corners of elastic solids under the influence of loads are different and generally more intense than those imposed upon the body else- where. Stress concentration at a re-entrant corner can be reduced by increasing the radius of the fillet at the corner. Stress concentration at the end of a crack in a plate undergoing either tension or compression Can be relieved appreciably by drilling a hole at the very end of the crack. Also, stresses can be increased in an elastic body in tension or compression by making a hole in it. The stress concentration is greatest at the edge of the hole. Considerable knowledge of the stresses which exist about the bore hole of a deep well may be had by applying our knowledge of engineering mechanics; or more particularly the theory of elasticity. It is, of course, necessary to make the assumption that the rock is elastic and behaves as an elastic solid, that is, that it obeys Hooke's law, has a modulus of elasticity, and a Poisson's ratio. It is also necessary to know, Or assume, the state of stress which exists in the rock prior to the penetration of the drill. With this knowledge it is possible to compute the stresses about the bore hole. The problem can be simplified by considering several simple cases separately and then by applying the principle of superposition to solve the more complex cases which are made up of the simpler ones. The chemistry of cyanide solutions is complex, this complexity being responsible for the ability to act as complex-forming agents in metal dissolution processes, among them gold and silver. Such ionic species are used in hydrometallurgical processes, in particular in gold extraction and electro-plating. Due to the high toxicity of cyanide, the discard of effluent from processes and/or industries demands rigorous treatment so as to minimise its concentration. Among the conventional chemical treatment of such effluents one can mention SO2/air; biological degradation; oxidation by using hydrogen peroxide; oxidation by sodium hypochlorite, etc. However, the electrolytic recycling process is also promising for cyanide recovery and offers the possibility of recycling it to the aforementioned industrial processes. Such a process does not use additional chemicals but enables direct re-utilisation to the main process aiming at adjusting the cyanide concentration.

Underground or In-situ Coal Gasification (UCG or UICG), though not a new concept, is now attracting considerable global attention as a viable process to provide a "clean" and economic fuel from coal. Applying improved UICG technology to gasify deep, thin, and low-grade coal seams could vastly increase the amount of exploitable reserves. However, it is imperative that further development of this technology is based on integrating UCG practices and potential environmental impacts with accepted sustainability frameworks and processes. This paper evaluates the potential of UCG to conform to frameworks such as MMSD (Mining, Minerals and Sustainable Development), Natural Step and Green Engineering, in order to define its "sustainable" potential. The paper also discusses the potential contributions of UCG to sustainability during its design, operation, closure, and post-closure phases.

Ore at the Magmont mine in southeast Missouri is extracted by the room-and-pillar method on two and sometimes three horizons. In 1991, a plan was formulated to recover high-grade ore in pillars using cable halts to accommodate spans of more than 27 m (90 ft ). A test area was selected and a recovery plan developed. A cooperative rock mechanics study was established by Cominco Metals, the US Bureau of Mines and the University of Utah. When initially opened in 1968, the planned production rate was about 910 kt/a (1 million stpy). Due to declining reserves, the production rate was decreased in November 1992 to 570 kt/a (630.000 stpy). Pillar recovery now accounts for about 40% to 50% of the mined tonnage. This method plays a vital role in allowing Magmont to continue to operate.

"The first experiments on the vacuum drying of spherical clay sample are presented and the theoretical model of the process is considered. The model is based on the solution of the heat and the moisture transfer equations with the effective thermal conductivity and water diffusion coefficients for wet porous clay-like medium. The time and radial dependence of the temperature and the moisture were calculated for different initial conditions. The results obtained for the time dependence of the moisture content are in good agreement with the experimental results obtained in the initial period, when all the moisture in the sample did not freeze to form an ice crust. INTRODUCTION Capillary-porous materials very often occur in nature and in industry. A porous medium is a solid matrix with voids, or pores, which are continuously connected. These pores are usually filled with fluids or moisture, water vapor and air that can pass through the medium because the voids are interconnected. The void fraction in the solid matrix is referred to as the porosity. Porosity or void fraction is a measure of the void (i.e. ""empty"") spaces in a material, and is a fraction of the volume of voids over the total volume. The moisture content in porous media determines the properties of the porous body, its mechanical and thermo-physical properties, such as density, plasticity, viscoelasticity, swelling, cracking, and so on. Complex processes of heat and mass transfer occur in porous bodies when they are heated or cooled, during drying or freezing (Luikov,1966). The course of these processes depends essentially on the physical-chemical composition of the solid matrix of the porous body, on its fractal dimension, porosity and morphology. The clay and clay minerals are the most important porous materials in the history of the mankind (Mukherjee, 2013). Clay is a very fine grained, unconsolidated rock matter, which is plastic when wet, but becomes hard and stony when heated. It has its origin in natural processes, mostly complex weathering, transported and deposited by sedimentation within geological periods. Clay is composed of silica {SiO2), Alumina (Al2O3) and water (H2O) plus appreciable concentrations of oxides of iron, alkali and alkaline earth, and contains groups of crystalline substances such as quartz, feldspar, and mica. Building materials, bricks, and tiles, pottery, porcelain and faience are made from clay. Clay is used in the food and medical industry, and, not least, in the mining industry as a carrier containing aluminum, silicon and other valuable elements, as well as metals (copper, gold) as constituents, contained in the pores in the form of micro- and nano-particles or grains."

Discovered in 1896, the Sons of Gwalia orebody is located in a ductile mylonite zone within a sequence of Archaean pillow metabasalts and minor metasediments of greenschist facies which are variably sheared.The ore zone has good continuity, being 110 m wide and 500 m long, dipping 45 degrees east and plunging 70 degrees to the south to a depth of 1500 m downplunge. A strongly-developed foliation is present together with a prominent lineation paralleling the plunge. The mylonite zone consists of unmineralised chlorite schist and a 'U' shaped mineralised zone of chlorite-sericite schist with varying amounts of quartz-carbonate as veins parallel to foliation, boudins, and locally as massive quartz-carbonate. Pyrite is the dominant sulphide present.Grade control utilises RC holes on a 10 m x 10 m pattern, with infill blast rig holes 5 m deep where necessary.Some visual control of ore boundaries is present and, combined with good ore continuity and a knowledge of the structure of the orebody, enables cost-effective grade control to be achieved. To-date, over three million ounces of gold have been produced from the orebody.

THE mining districts of the first and second order1 of the western United States (and borders) are those named on Fig. 1. These fall into four groups: (1) in the eastern outliers of the Rocky Mountain system; (2) in the Rocky Mountain system itself; (3) in the Great Basin; and (4) in the Sierras and Coast ranges. Of these four groups, the first three are almost entirely of Tertiary age and are within a belt of Tertiary compres-sive folding which we shall call the Rocky Mountain-Great Basin thrust arc. The backbone of this belt is shown by the line BAC. The position of the ore districts in this belt indicates a conformance to linear elements of the continental pattern. These are additional to the peripheral elements emphasized by Butler.2 NATURE OF THE THRUST ARC The thrust arc separates regions of contrasted kinds. To the east of it are flat-lying plateaus interrupted by earlier mountain folds; to the west, sunken basins, in which block-faulted ranges lie like an anchored fleet in a sea of desert wash or lava. The cross-sections are as shown in Fig. 2.

The methodology of active pulsing air separation is a new method for dry material classification. Especially, it is suitable to electronic scraps disposal and re-utilization. By studying the difference of drag coefficients of the particles moving through areas of varying Reynolds numbers, and considering the extra-mass forces acting on the particles in the active pulsing air field, models of the dynamic motion which particles follow were developed. A computer simulation was prepared that showed the traces of particles with different densities and/or diameters, but similar aerodynamic characteristics, as they moved through the turbulent flow, to modify and define the parameters of the models. The simulation was found to predict the observed results with artificial tracing spheres being separated by the laboratory equipment. The separation performance, as being affected by the particles, nature, the air velocity, the pulsing frequency and the air pattern, is discussed. In general, lower density particles are more responsive to variations in airflow velocity. In addition, an industrial scale active pulsing air separator was designed, and it provides a new and efficient method for resource re-utilization in China.

The mass spectra of four tertiary butyl substituted thiophenes are reported. A comparison and contrast with earlier structure correlations made by API-RP48 mass spectroscopists is presented. The fragmentation routes of these types of molecules are discussed and explained in terms of existing theories in mass spectrometry. Low ionization voltage data are presented to support the mechanistic picture developed. Structures are inferred about some of the ions, and these are correlated with existing theories. Metastable peaks in the spectra are used to support the fragmentation paths. The presence of doubly charged ions in the spectra is noted and the possible implications toward mechanisms discussed. The general picture of simple, small fragments leaving the ion moiety upon further fragmentation is developed in detail. Some suggestions are presented for further work utilizing isotopically labeled molecules to establish firmly the general picture of fragmentations of the alkylthiophenes.

THE great Swedish export iron ore mines are Kiruna and Malmberget in the north above the Arctic circle and Grängesberg in Central Sweden, see Figs. 1 to 3. These mines exported in 1951 about 13 million metric tons of high grade iron ore and concentrates. The origin of these three ore fields seems to be the same. They are of pre-Cambrian age and are regarded as typical instances of primary eruptive ore that has thrust up as glowing masses of lava flow between two somewhat older beds of porphyry. Apparently the ore and the porphyry became segre. gated from common parent magmas by a process of differentiation. Despite the fact that the Kiruna orebody belongs to the earliest pre-Cambrian formation, it has been influenced to an unusually small extent by later metamorphosisms, apart from its having been set on edge through folding and wrenching off by a number of later faults. The Kiruna ore occurs along a stretch of more than 4 miles as a series of slabs or lenses sloping steeply toward the east and sandwiched between two beds of porphyry. The main orebody has a length of about 3 miles and an average width of 300 ft with a maximum of 600 ft. The dip varies from 65" to 45" toward the east and the known depth is 3000 ft, although magnetic surveys indicate it may be at least 6000 ft. Malmberget has undergone a more thorough transformation, having been pressed and crumpled into a meandering band of disconnected layers and lenses. The largest of the more connected bodies of ore, the Great Ore Layer, outcrops on a low mountain ridge and has a total length of about 4 miles and a maximum width of about 300 ft.
