A diverse selection of rockbolt designs and resin anchors are available for use in underground mines. Research in recent years at the UNSW Mining Research Centre led to the construction of a rockbolt pull-testing facility. This facility has subsequently been upgraded, commissioned and initial test work has been completed to verify the pull-test process. A test program has been completed with the objective to understand the load transfer mechanism and improve the general performance of rockbolts. This paper describes the results of this research. The oil industry continued relatively quiet in Wyoming in 1935, although production increased about 8 per cent over the previous year; 55 oil wells were completed in 1935, compared to 34 in 1934, and at the end of the year 44 wells were drilling, 33 in proven fields and 11 in wildcat locations. The total drilling a year ago was only 30. In the year 1935 Wyoming produced a total of 13,451,000 bbl. of oil, a gain of 912,000 bbl. over the 1934 figure of 12,539,000 bbl. Approxi-mately two-thirds of the increase, or 630,000 bbl., was from black oil fields and one-third, or 285,000 bbl., from light oil pools. Salt Creek, with production of 6,357,000 bbl., is still many times the largest field in Wyoming but in 1935 it made less than 50 per cent of the state's total, after producing more than all other fields in the state for 24 years; however, its decline was only 3.8 per cent from the previous year. Oregon Basin, a black oil field, held second place again with production of 1,163,-000 bbl., a good increase over 1934. Grass Creek, with increases in both its light and black oil, jumped into third place; and Lance Creek, with its new Sundance light oil production, was in fourth place in the amount of production. Frannie, which was in third place in 1934, dropped far back on the list because of lack of market. Byron and Garland, two other black oil fields in the Big Horn Basin, increased considerably. Big Muddy, a prominent light-oil field, was down with a natural decline; and Elk Basin, also light oil, produced less because of market conditions. During 1934 only three gas wells were drilled in Wyoming and 29 dry holes, 13 in proven fields and 16 at wildcat locations. Of the latter, 5 were on wildcat structures of considerable interest. Of the 55 wells completed during the year, 53 were in proven fields and of these 17 were small ones in the shallow Osage field and 10 were light-oil wells good for 1500 to 3000 bbl. each in the Lance Creek field. Discoveries Two of the oil wells were discoveries at Medicine Bow and Sheep Creek. Medicine Bow is a very large anticline with more than 3500 ft. of closure and is located in Carbon County in the south-central part of the state. A new on-line database of literature about copper has been created through a joint undertaking by the Copper Development Association Inc. and PROCOBRE-Chile, with funding provided in part through the International Copper Association, Ltd. The new database will permit Spanish-speaking technologists to access publications maintained by PROCOBRE-Chile by means of standard keyword searches. In addition, a new Spanish- English thesaurus has been written to enable Spanish-speaking individuals to search d access the Technology and Environmental databases of the Copper Data Center, which together comprise more than 80,000 publications dealing with the production, properties, uses and environmental effects of copper. Planned expansion of the new Spanish literature database is described.

1. TRACKLESS MINING AT OAMITES by K. E. MANTELL Oamites Mine, brought into production in late 1971, is located 50 km south of Windhoek, South West Africa, on the northern boundary of and just outside the Rehoboth Gebied. Oamites was known as a possible mining proposition at the turn of the century when Hanseatische Minen Gesellschaft was adit mining on the adjacent farm Kamzwas. Rand Mines Limited carried out a small amount of prospecting in the early 1960s, Falconbridge Explorations Limited later taking over the prospect. Approximately 4600 m of diamond drilling was carried out between 1965 and 1967.

"A computer program is described which will analyze the stability of coal pillars. The extent of the peripheral failed zone and the central elastic core of the pillar, the stress distribution across the pillar and its strength can be determined by a ""sliceby- slice"" analysis technique. The program incorporates a brittle/pseudo-ductile transition point so that a pillar may fail by brittle fracture or pseudo-ductile yield. It is shown that:(i) There is a minimum pillar stress below which fracture cannot initiate; hence there is a minimum pillar strength. (ii) In specific circumstances (narrow pillars) , once fracture initiates at the pillar edge it must propagate immediately to the pillar centre. This unstable situation is called ""catastrophic"" failure and might be regarded as a model of a pillar ""burst "". (iii) For wider pillars, the failed zone ex tends gradually into the pillar as the loading increases until it reaches the pillar centre when the pillar is deemed to have f ailed. This is called the point of ""ultimate"" failure.The critical pillar widths to avoid catastrophic and ultimate failure can be calculated.A hypothetical analysis of five rib pillars is given to illustrate the application and the results obtained from the model. The model is then used to analyze three case histories taken from the literature. The first demonstrates the applicability of the brittle/pseudo-ductile failure criteria for Pittsburgh coal. The second compares the pillar strength formulae derived here with those of Salamon and Munro(13) and Bieniawskiou . The final case history compares the model analysis with field stress measurements in a yielding pillar. In all cases the model results are compatible with the case histories."

Rand presented in 1930 a sum of money from which the income is available to support various phases of the work of the Institute in which Mr. Rand was so deeply interested. At present the fund amounts to $10,000. The specific terms of the deed of gift are as follows: "The fund collected to establish a memorial to the late Charles F. Rand shall be placed in the custody of the Board of Directors of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers, to be set up as a trust to be known as the `Charles F. Rand Foundation,' the income of which shall each year be applied to a distinct purpose to be decided upon in that year by vote of the Board of Directors. This purpose shall be such as to promote the general welfare of the Institute and to constitute a permanent memorial of the usefulness of Mr. Rand, who for many years gave unstintingly of his time and talents in its service.

Enclosed cabs are a primary means of reducing the silica dust exposure of equipment operators at surface mines. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has investigated various factor effects on enclosed cab air filtration system performance. Factors experimen­tally investigated were intake filter efficiency, intake air leakage, intake filter loading (filter flow resistance), recirculation filter use and wind velocity effects on cab penetra­tion (inside to outside cab concentration ratio). Adding an intake pressurizer fan to the filtration system was also investigated. Results indicate that the intake filter efficiency and recirculation filter were the two most influential factors on cab penetration .Use of a recirculation filter significantly reduced cab penetration over the intake air filter by itself due to the multiplicable filtration of the cab interior air. Cab penetration was also affected to a lesser extent by intake filter loading and air leakage. Adding an intake pressurizer fan notably increased intake airflow and cab pressure while providing only minor changes to cab penetration.

The binary aluminum-silicon alloys have certain characteristic advantages which are now well known, and these alloys have come into considerable use during the past several years.' Their field of application has been limited to a certain extent, however, by their low yield point and hardness, low endurance limit, and relatively poor machining characteristics. These properties are improved by the addition of copper, and the ternary aluminum-silicon-copper alloys constitute an important class. The addition of copper decreases the corrosion resistance of the aluminum-silicon alloys and increases specific gravity. Magnesium is a hardening addition which seems to have relatively little effect on corrosion resistance, and which, of course, reduces specific gravity. The object of the work described in this paper was the development of alloys and heat treatments for the production of sand castings and permanent-mold castings having substantially all the advantages of the binary aluminum-silicon alloys together with mechanical properties improved to a degree permitting wider application. Constitution of Alloys Magnesium and silicon combine in aluminum alloys as the compound Mg2Si, which forms a binary system with aluminum. In alloys containing an excess of silicon over that required to form the compound, solidification ends with the freezing at 1022' F. (550' C.) of a ternary eutectic of aluminum, Mg²Si, and silicon. Judging from the horizontal projection of the liquidus surface as given by Hanson and Gayler,² this ternary eut,ectic contains about 13 per cent. silicon and 6 per cent. magnesium. AT the annual meeting of the Institute 2 years ago, a paper,1 " Requirements of Refractories for Open Hearths," was presented by F. W. Davis and G. A. Bole of the U. S. Bureau of Mines. In a brief foreword, D. A. Lyon stated that the paper was not to report the results obtained but rather to present an outline to serve as a basis for discussion. The essential parts of an open-hearth furnace were described and the conditions under which they operate. Some constructive discussion followed the reading of the paper. One of the first fellowship investigations undertaken by the Bureau of Mines in 1924 under the cooperative agreement with Carnegie Institute of Technology, through the Metallurgical Advisory Board, was to determine service conditions of open-hearth refractories. The present paper gives the results of this work which was done in the Pittsburgh district and was in charge of the authors. Material contributions in the form of data were contributed by E. N. The purpose of this study is to determine the distribution of stresses in a particular portion of the ore body of an operating mine. DESCRIPTION OF GEOLOGY The ore body of this base metal mine is a lenticular mass of copper-zinc-iron sulfides, enclosed in a drag-folded quartz mica schist. The schistose host rock has steep dip which varies from north to south and an east-west strike. The drag-fold plunges eastward at about 35º, and this gives a rake of similar inclination to the bottom horizon of the ore zone. The core of massive sulfides is surrounded by an irregular envelope of disseminated sulfides in the schist, so that stope walls are comprised, in most cases, of strongly foliated schist. Adjoining the schist on the south is competent gneiss, while instrusive into the schist in a direction nearly parallel to the foliation is a series of discontinuous quartz diorite dikes, whose contacts with the schist often prove to be lines of weakness. Coarse to fine-grained pegmatites of irregular dimensions are a second type of intrusive associated with the ore body. These dikes generally strike north-east and dip westerly at about 65º. They therefore intersect the schist at an obtuse angle. The dikes are considered to be older than the massive

Surface coal mining productivity in the U.S. and Illinois has shown a general declining trend since 1969. The U.S. Department of Energy conducted an analysis in 1980 of the causes of declining productivity in different states. This paper presents a detailed analysis of changes in overall productivity and productivity in different functions such as overburden preparation, overburden stripping, reclamation, coal handling, etc. during the period 1970-1982. Statistical analysys techniques including multiple regression were utilized in the study.

The Bureau of Mines two-stage coal-pyrite flotation process was modified to provide a more concentrated final clean coal slurry underflow which could be dewatered economically by filtration or centrifugation. This was accomplished by doing the first-stage coal flotation step in the conventional manner with a slurry of about 8 percent solids, but running the second-stage pyrite Flotation step with undiluted coal froth concentrate containing about 25 percent solids. The final clean coal underflow produced by the new technique contained between 26 and 30 percent solids; this pulp was sufficiently concentrated to be filtered industrially without further thickening. There is currently some pessimism over mixing of net-acid-neutralizing (NAN) and net-acid-generating (NAG) rock to obtain indefinite near-neutral seepage from mined-rock piles. This is due in large part to the lack of well- documented, successful cases of blending and layering, and to the knowledge of unsuccessful attempts. Past work often defined a potentially successful mix in terms of the ratio of net-acid-neutralizing rock to net-acid-generating rock. For example, one case study indicated the bulk pile-wide ratio was approximately 3: 1. Since this exceeded a common ratio used in acid-base accounting, no acidic drainage was predicted. However, acidic drainage appeared within two years. A large part of the ambiguity in mixing arises from attempts to predict success based on a ratio. This paper looks in detail at simple discrete-zone mixing, where at least one truckload of NAG rock is placed in a particular location with no further rehandling or dozing. The lack of acidic drainage in this scenario is dependent on the intervening distance between the discrete NAG zones, along flowpaths occupied by NAN rock. Calculations show that the bulk mixing ratio of a mined-rock pile is not an accurate indication of whether near-neutral drainage can be maintained. For example, a pile with a bulk ratio around 300: 1 could still release some acidic drainage. Calculations also show that the minimum separation distance of the NAG zones (L) can be so great, even with typical NAG and NAN rock, that the mixed pile could safely contain only a few percent of NAG rock, which would not be sufficient for many minesites with NAG rock. The comparison to a more elaborate, computer-based statistical model shows that the simple discrete-zone approach will provide a reliable yes-no indication of whether any acidic drainage will leave a pile. However, predictions of whether combined downstream drainages will be acidic depend on numerous site-specific physical and geochemical factors within and below a pile that cannot be modelled in a general way, like the number of flowpaths and the nature of their intersections.

NITROGEN used as an alloying element in steel has received increased attention in recent years. Its merit as an austenite stabilizer and hot strengthener has long been recojinized, particularly by European investigators.' Recent work' indicates that nitrogen contents of 1/2 pet or more allow the addition of several percent of ferrite-forming hot strengtheners, such as molybdenum, without subsequent austenite decomposition at elevated temperatures. The room temperature properties of such alloys are characterized by high yield and tensile strengths with excellent ductility, even after cold working, as shown in Tables I and 11. The 1350°F creep-rupture properties of Cr-Mn-Mo-N steels are comparable to those of commercial alloys such as Timken's 16-25-6, containing 16 pct Cr, 25 pct Ni, and 6 pct Mo, as shown in Table 111. Cr-Mn steel containing 1/2 pet N must be made under pressure if ingot gassing is to be avoided. However, there are difficulties attendant to this practice. Pressure melting restricts the ingot size, and the equipment required is costlier and more complicated than comparable air melting facilities. An effort was made, therefore, to determine more economical methods of adding nitrogen. The pressures generated in centrifugal casting usually range from 5 to 10 atm and are sufficient to prevent the gassing of high nitrogen Cr-Mn steels. A centrifugal casting was made of an alloy containing 16 pct Cr, 18 pct Mn, 2 pct Mo, and 0.73 pct N. A risk, 8 in. diam and 11/2 in. thick, was cast at 1000 rpm. It has been calculated that a pressure of 9 atm was developed at the periphery of the disk at this speed. Metallographic inspection of specimens taken from the disk revealed no gas holes or other defects. The elevated temperature properties of radial and circumferential specimens taken from this casting are given in Table IV. The creep-rupture life of this cast nickel-free austenitic steel was equivalent to that of the wrought Cr-Mn-Mo-N steels. Although centrifugal casting appears to lend itself to the manufacture of high nitrogen austenitic steels, its applicability is limited to relatively small sizes. A process applicable to the production of large ingots of high nitrogen steels is suggested by low carbon rimming steel practice. Gas holes formed during ingot solidification are not detrimental so long as they weld shut during hot rolling. An economic advantage of gassing ingots is the increased ingot-to-slab yield, especially if the ingots are mechanically capped. Also, it is probable that higher nitrogen levels can be achieved with mechanically capped ingots than with hot-topped ingots. A series of gassy heats was made under both atmospheric and higher pressures, as indicated in Table V. Several of the air melted ingots were mechanically capped by chilling the molten ingot tops with a steel plate. The ingots were allowed to freeze in steel molds without hot-tops unless otherwise indicated. A comparison of Table 111 with Table V shows no significant difference in the creep-rupture properties of the gassy and the nongassy ingots after hot work- ing nor between the gassy ingots produced under different conditions. Dynamic hydrothermal modeling is a tool that can aid in studying problems associated with hydrothermal ore deposits and can help increase our understanding of the spatial distribution of ore within hydrothermal systems. Models are constructed by a sequence of steps involving development of a conceptual model, followed by its mathematical description in terms of governing equation with accompanying initial and boundary conditions. This equation is then solved either analytically or numerically. The four model types ò that fully describe a hydrothermal 'system are those for fluid flow, heat and ore solute transport, and deformation. At Renison, models have been used to help understand two major exploration problems. These are the controls on ore localisation in dolomite horizons and feeder faults respectively. The types of models used ò have simulated the distribution of all mineral zones, pyrrhotite, and temperature in the dolomites. This has allowed evaluation of the effects on ore localisation by physical and chemical heterogeneities within the dolomite host rocks, and allowed estimation of potential controls in different physical and chemical environments.

Allis Mineral Systems' Grate- Kiln system can economically convert low-grade iron ore into high- grade iron-ore pellets suitable as feed material for blast furnaces for making steel. These pellets can also be fed to a direct reduction process for making sponge iron. The Grate- Car system combines the company's [ ] Grate-Kiln system for iron-ore pelletizing and Accar system for iron- ore reduction. The Grate-Car system consists of a traveling grate, a ported rotary kiln and a rotary cooler that are coupled in series. This system eliminates the pelletizing plant's rotary kiln and annular cooler. It reduces the need for some auxiliary equipment. This results in lower capital cost and lower energy consumption. The traveling grate provides that static bed handling necessary for heat hardening pellets before their discharge into the kiln. The ported kiln provides the reducing atmosphere with a more precise means of controlling the kiln axial temperature profile than conventional rotary kilns.

In this study, effects of the inert constituents, such as ash, and the effect of blending coals with differing rank and composition on the plasticity of coal blends were investigated. The reference coal originated from the Zonguldak region, in the north-west part of Turkey. Firstly, the effect of coal ash on the plasticity of Zonguldak coal was determined. Secondly, the relationship between the plastic properties of the individual coals and those of the blended coals were identified. Some important relations were found, related to the characteristics of the individual coals. Ultimately, the manner in which the plasticity of Zonguldak coal was affected by blending with low volatile coals was investigated. Keywords: coal blending, coal plasticity, coke, fluidity, rank.

"The French Mine (formerly the Oregon) is 4 miles by road south of the Nickel Plate Mine. It lies on the steep eastern slope of the Similkameen River valley at elevation 4,000 feet, between Cahill and Winters Creeks.The property was discovered in .1901 and bought 4 years later by Messrs. French and Deardorf. It was developed in a modest way by the owners and by several companies until 1947, without success. The spectacular showings of bornite and chalcopyrite in the outcrop drew attention to its possibilities for copper rather than gold. Diamond drilling by the owners in 1947 yielded several high-grade gold intersections and created new interest. In 1949 the property was purchased by Kelowna Mines Hedley Limited. Exploration drilling and geological mapping outlined sufficient ore to commence production in 1950. Except for a few months each winter the operation has been continuous, and to the end of 1954 had produced almost 30,000 tons of high grade ore. The ore is crushed at the mine and hauled 8 miles by truck to the Company mill at Hedley, where it is treated together with the ore from Nickel Plate.Regional GeologyThe country rock consists of brown tuff, flows, limestone, and cherty formations belonging to the Nicola group (Rice 1947) of Triassic age. West of and just below the mine is a large mass of granodiorite which is part of the same body that underlies Nickel Plate Mountain. Bedding attitudes in the mine area are locally complicated, but dips are generally less than 45 degrees. To the south and below the mine the beds stand almost vertical, continuing downward with this attitude for 2,000 feet to Winters Creek. The main granodiorite contact is also steep, conforming to the sedimentary formations, whereas northward towards Nickel Plate it dips gently to the northwest, slightly flattter than the thick westerly dipping pile of sediments above it. The interpretation of this structure by Billingsley (1936) is that the French mine lies near the crest of the large northeasterly trending asymmetrical anticline which contains in its gently dipping western limb the Nickel Plate orebodies. The granodiorite body conforming roughly to this shape seems to occupy the core of the anticline. Sill-like prongs of granodiorite extend upward to the east from the main mass, outcropping over wide areas at the head of Winters Creek (Figure 1). There is a possibility that overthrusting from the west, similar to that on Nickel Plate Mountain, occurs not far below the French mine.An interesting feature of the granodiorite-sediment contact is that where it dips gently westward no alteration exists in the sediments, but where it has a steep front pronounced heat effects are indicated by the presence of a thousand-foot-wide zone of reddish garnet skarn."
