"This report is the second of a series dealing with electrical methods of underground communication nd signalling, and is a discussion of some of the factors involved in -applying radio in mines.A previous report2 described the results obtained by the use of the ""T.P.S."" of ground-conduction method of signalling, and outlined in a general way the requirements for a practical mine communication apparatus.The popularity of radio, the development work on new apparatus, a desire to render humanitarian service to entombed miners, and an endeavor to find new uses and applications for radio stimulated many persons to attempt the application of radio to mine rescue purposes. A number of experiments on underground reception from surface broadcast stations have been conducted by different experimenters in various parts of the country and the widespread interest in the subject is shown by the fact that these tests have been con¬ducted in many States, The Bureau of Mines has received information regarding, underground tests in Illinois, Pennsylvania, Arizona, Utah, Idaho, Colorado, Michigan, Wyoming, Kentucky, New York, Connecticut, and in England, Germany, Italy, and Franc.From occasional press notices and illustrations in different papers it may appear that radio communication in mines and in tunnels being excavated is en established fact, and that the method is comparatively simple. Recently it was shown the total energy method of spectrochemical analysis is suitable for the quantitative estimation of many of the elements of which ores are composed. It was shown how this method can be applied to the determination of germanium, tin, and lead. Continuing, this work, the present report deals with analyses for beryllium, zinc, cadmium; and indium. There are three basic problems in these investigations. The first is to study the influence of those elements that make up the greater part of an ore sample on the spectral-line intensities of the elements for which analyses are being made, the latter generally being the minor constituents. The second is to develop proper methods for the preparation of standard spectrographic curves. Finally, we are concerned with improvement in equipment and procedure, so that greater accuracy can be achieved. As discussed previously, it is better to study as groups those elements that belong to the same group in the periodic table because their spectra are similar. Beryllium, zinc, and cadmium are thus related. Indium was included in this work because it is, associated with zinc and cadmium in zinc ores.

Because mineral matter is finely distributed within the matrix, Nigerian Labia coal is nonresponsive to conventional processing techniques. However, testing has shown that Lafia coal can be upgraded by selective oil agglormation. The optimum oil concentration was found to be 10 mL of paraffin per 25 g of coal. A product containing 6% ash and 1.9% sulfur was obtained with a yield of 90%. Optimum results were achieved with a grinding; time of from 2.5 and 3 hrs, which produced a 98% -400 mesh product. However, further grinding wars found to be deleterious to the process. Also, high pH adversely affected concentrate yields. Utilizing kerosene as a bridging liquid, a product containing 4% ash and 0.33% sulfur was achieved at a natural pH of 6.3 with a yield of 85%. At pH 9 and 10, a product containing 4.5% ash was achieved with a yield of >90%.

Object oriented programming has been developed to model the way we think about the world. It allows higher levels of abstraction, generalization and classification than many other programming techniques. Some tools of object oriented design and programming are encapsulation, classes, inheritance, modularity and reusability. Expert systems have been used for years to implement process control strategies in the minerals industry. Expert systems allow process control knowledge to be expressed in linguistic rules that are processed by an inference engine. Expert systems which employ object oriented design and programming provide new opportunities for real- time process control. The concepts of object oriented programming and an example object oriented expert system are discussed in this paper.

Comminution is an old art. Unfortunately the analysis of the unit operations has been handicapped by the lack of both theoretical and experimental information. Two types of infor¬mation are needed, one an understanding of what happens when a particle breaks in a brittle manner; and two, an understanding of what happens when the daughter fragments pass through the mill. This paper is concerned with the former, the catastrophic fracture of a brittle solid. Recently, successful theoretical attacks on the frac¬ture of brittle solids have yielded significant-results. New experimental techniques are yielding insight into the physical phenomenon occurring during brittle fracture. Many of the re¬doubtable shiboliths of the last century are either being laid to rest or verified.

The death of the eldest of the honorary members of the Institute was not unexpected. Ritter von Tunner had never recovered from the effects of a paralytic stroke received in 1892, and when the same enemy struck again in February of this year the blow was plainly mortal. He passed away June 9th, gently and without pain. Thus ends a career of great distinction and fruitfulness, crowned with fame and love. This pioneer of the age of iron and steel had lived so long and wrought so much that the present generation could scarcely recall the whole category of his services. There can be no more appropriate use of the pages of these Transactions than to honor them with a record of such a life and work, for the inspiration of other lives to other labors. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) data indicates that the roof bolting machine is third among all equipment and second among equipment in underground coal mining whose operators exceed the MSHA-PEL (Mine Safety and Health Administration-Permissible Exposure Limit). In response to this, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has conducted a study to reduce overexposures of noise to operators of roof bolting machines. An important segment of the research is to determine, characterize and measure sound power levels radiated by a roof bolting machine during different drilling configurations. The determined sound power levels generated during the drilling cycle are of major interest because the levels represent the overall sound power generated by the machine. These sound power levels, determined from laboratory tests, can be used to accurately assess the effectiveness of proposed controls for reducing noise exposure to roof bolting machine operators. By using the sound power level results obtained from the laboratory and a commercially available acoustical modeling package, a method for predicting sound pressure levels to roof bolting machine operators for differing drilling types and parameters could be determined. This paper provides a method for predicting sound pressure levels at the operator’s position of a roof bolting machine in an underground coal mine using sound power levels determined in the laboratory. To determine validity, underground coal mine data was also collected to compare predicted and measured sound pressure levels. The results of the predicted sound pressure level data were the same as the underground measured results. This research will provide the mining industry with a valid method for predicting a roof bolting machine operator’s noise dosage underground given any type of drilling configuration or drilling method utilized from laboratory testing.

PRESIDENT LITTLEJOHN: We have with us a gentleman from Utah, who is familiarly known -as the "Mudite King," Mr. Reid, of the Lion Coal Company. Here is a letter I would like to read, and probably Mr. Reid will give us an idea of his Mudite machine, or the results he is obtaining. This question was brought up in Rock Springs, Wyoming, but Mr. Reid was not there personally during the discussion, but Mr. Burnell, who is general superintendent of the Lion Coal Com¬pany, as much as he possibly could, described the system and its effects. I believe Mr. Reid will probably be able to give a somewhat clearer statement this afternoon. This letter is from the Coal Mining Inspector of the State of Utah, John Crawford. "February 10, 1925. "The Industrial Commission of Utah, Building. "Statement of John Crawford, Coal Mine Inspector, in regard to Muditing in Coal Mines: "That Muditing used in connection with our present sprinkling system in coal mines is the missing link to the system we have had heretofore, because the water applied by the former system began to dry out, in heavy air currents, the moment it was put on. Consequently the dust that had been humidified by sprinkling, came back to its natural condition, and if anything, the combustible parts of it, in my opinion, were more intensified than previous to being wetted down. "The advantages that Muditing has over the old system of sprinkling are: "1st. The dust that is on the roof, timbers and sides of the entry is washed completely off and rolled up in the Mudite solution which entirely destroys the wings, crudely speaking, of the fine coal dust. "2nd. Sprinkling with the Mudite system, the water and mud is of greater extent than could be applied with a hand hose by a sprinkler. This sprinkling can be done while the mine is in operation, just the same as if water alone was being used. "3rd. The Mudite solution, when dried out, leaves a coating which serves as an armour to the coal, so that in the event of a local explosion, the inflammable matter on the coal is non-combustible; whereas, if that same coal had been sprinkled with water only, and made free of dust, the heat would have the same effect on the coal as it has on a stove when coal is thrown into it-instantaneous combustion. "Therefore, it is my opinion that the Mudite system is the missing link to the perfecting of our sprinkling system here in Utah. "(Signed) JOHN CRAWFORD." [The last previous Bureau of Mines publication relative to details of permissible methane detectors (Bulletin 331, published in 1930) describes detectors of four different types, namely flame, combustion, catalytic, and a combination Wheatstone-bridge axed catalytic type in which catalytic action at the surface of a platinum filament when in methane causes a change in the temperature and resistance of the filament, thus unbalancing the bridge circuit and giving a reading proportional to the methane concentration. Three detectors of the latter type have been approved since 1933. A brief description of each follows: U. C. C. Detector Approved No. 902, covering the U. C. C. indicating detector, as described in Bulletin 331, was entered January 27, 1330, to cover important chances in design that permit checking; the calibration of the detector at any time, whether in gas or fresh air. Essential features of the detector are shown in figure 1.]

The perception of the mining industry in the Australian community has changed considerably over the last four decades. This has been partly brought about by changing values and expectations of the Australian community as well as by global factors. The legal environment for the Australian mining industry has undergone significant changes. Among them, the High Court's Mabo decision which confirmed native title rights as part of the common law and environmental legal developments are dealt with particularly. It is suggested that the Australian legal environment is not necessarily the prime cause for Australian mining companies taking their investment off shore. This is a summary on how native title impacts on land tenements and some of the major issues that emerged since the `Mabo decision' and the Native Title Act 1993 are discussed. Environmental legal developments have resulted in liability facing directors and senior management in compliance matters .and in operating mining and other businesses because of changes in community expectations. In the next decade it is suggested there will be many drivers for more changes in the legal environment. Some of these are touched on including the changing roles of the Commonwealth and State Governments, the High Court as -law-makers and the changing relationships with indigenous people in Australia and in overseas countries. The changing legal environment for mining demands a national approach in many areas on the proposition that resource based industries are part of a national industry. The uniform law approach among the States has been taking place but this needs to further. An appropriate task force should be forward to review the entire legal structure and regulations affecting mining on a national rather than a State basis . The mining industry will need to work with expectations of a changing community which have powerful, but sometimes contradictory, interest groups.

Mixed phase titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticles synthesized through hydrolysis of TiCl4 solution at different conditions, namely concentration, pH, and residence time are characterized and evaluated as photocatalysts. The process is operated in a continuous stirred-tank reactor, CSTR giving blends of anatase, brookite, and rutile nanoparticles that were further evaluated to find the optimum mixture for a photocatalytic sorption material. The titania nanoparticles are first characterized in terms of photocatalytic activity under UV light illumination using an organic model compound (methyl orange) and after that are tested for removal of toxic selenate and selenite species from simulated effluent waters.

With the constantly increasing sales competition, coal to be sold today must meet the test of quality in every respect. The producers must be able to make all marketable sizes that will meet such general requirements as follows: 1. Ash content must be consistently low, depending upon the use to be made of the coal. 2. Sulfur content must be controlled accurately according to requirements. 3. All sizes must be positively free from visible impurities. 4. Free moisture of washed sizes must be reduced to a minimum. 5. The freezing of wet coal in cars must be prevented. 6. The percentage of fines in small mixed sizes must be controlled to give the uniform and proper combustion when used on various types of automatic stokers. 7. The undersize particles or degradation caused by handling must be kept to an absolute minimum in all sizes loaded. Many difficulties may be met in bringing any particular coal to meet these quality requirements, because the extent to which the quality of a coal may be controlled is determined largely by its physical characteristics. Preparation of an Impure Coal Bed The application of modern and scientific methods in the controlled preparation of bituminous coal from a bed in the mid-western field will illustrate the results that can be accomplished by adequate preparation: The bed referred to contains coal inherently excellent as to low ash and other desirable characteristics; in fact, the coal itself is one of the best in the field. It is, however, divided into four layers by dirt bands of soft shale 1 to 2 in. thick. It also contains much sulfur in the form of sulfur lenses and laminated sheets. Horsebacks or rolls varying from 6 in. to 12 ft. in width are encountered in the mining of the bed and heretofore have rendered it practically unworkable. The mines operating in this

The 1991 PACMANUS Expedition (Papua New Guinea-Australia-Canada in the Manus Basin) discovered a very large (approximately 800 x 350 m) actively-forming seafloor polymetallic sulfide 4 deposit in felsic volcanic rocks of the southeastern part of Manus Basin, a 60 km wide extensional zone of basalt, andesite and dacite volcanism in the New Britain back arc. The apparent neo-volcanic zone is a 30-km long, high standing, Y-shaped edifice, which we have named Pual Ridge ("Pual" means "fork" in a local PNG dialect). The PACMANUS deposit was found by deep-tow video on Pual Ridge along the flank and adjacent valley of a dacite lava dome. Videos show large spires, chimneys and mounds with abundant fauna. Only two small samples from an active chimney were recovered. Their mineralogy is a high temperature assemblage of chalcopyrite, bornite, tennantite, sphalerite or wurtzite and anhydrite. The bornite and tennantite and silver rich. Gold values for the two samples are 2 and 10 ppm. A pronounced methane and particulate plume was traced in the water column for 14 km to the northeast of the PACMANUS deposit. Other deposits of unknown size are nearby. The deposits of Pual Ridge and their surrounding volcanic rocks have close similarities to ancient massive sulfides of Archean to Phanerozoic age in Canada and Australia.

The little village, from which this formation receives its name, is situated on a bluff of the Alabama River, 175 feet above water level. This bluff is a portion of high table land that begins in the western portion of Choctaw and extends through Clarke and Monroe counties. We find points on this ridge more than 100 feet higher than Tuscaloosa, and nearly as high as the Tennessee River at Tuscumbia. Through this the Alabama River cuts its way, exposing a beautiful cross-section of the strata, of which the accompanying sketch may give some idea. The fossils are found about 75 feet below the surface and 100 feet above the level of the river. There are seven distinct strata. 1. The lowest, extending from the water's edge up the bluff 80 feet, is a soft calcareous rock containing about 15 per cent. of carbonate of lime, with occasional specks of mica. In this a few Ostrea, Turritellæ, and Flustræ were found, but so friable as to fall to pieces when handled. 2. Next comes a stratum varying from 2 to 8 feet, consisting of

The Mascot concentrator treats 1,900 tons of zinc ore per day by gravity concentration and flotation. During the year 1929 the heads averaged 2.90 per cent zinc, and the recovery was 90.15 per cent; the concentrates produced contained 60.19 per cent zinc. ACKNOWLEDGMENT Acknowledgment is made to M. The telephone rings at 3:20 a.m. and an exasperated voice on the other end says, “There’s been a mine explosion at Mine No. 5 and we have not heard from three units of men!” Twenty-three minutes later, the phone rings again and another panicked voice says, “There’s something wrong at the slurry impoundment, the pool level has just dropped five feet and we’re trying to figure out what’s wrong!” Thirty minutes later, the mobile phone rings and an excited security guard says, “We have reports of thick black water running down both the right fork and left fork of Straight Creek and both seem to be rising in the banks!” As if this isn’t enough excitement, the mobile phone rings again and a stressed company official says, “I just heard a report that black slurry is running out of the portals of XYZ Company No. 2 Mine, which is adjacent to our No. 5 Mine!” Is this all some kind of dream or nightmare? More importantly, however, if this could happen, what on earth do you do? Although we all like to think that “It can’t happen to me,” we all must admit that mine explosions do happen, slurry impoundments can rupture and creeks can flood with black water causing damage to others, including competitors. Your response must be quick, cool-headed, calculated and effective. This paper will examine the issues, concerns and ramifications of this hypothetical “disaster” and then present a systematic crisis management response. While each situation is different, there are general guidelines for forming an effective plan of action.
