The Prince Lyell Mine has been the major production source at Mount Lyell since under-ground mining commenced in 1972.Three lifts of stopes have been mined to date, with the fourth, the 40 Series lift, to commence production this year. As the mine has progressed deeper, the ore haulage system has evolved to accommodate the mine's economic circumstances while maximizing efficiency.In the first, or 10 Series lift of stopes, ore was removed from drawpoints by L.H.D. units and tipped directly into rakes of 7 tonne rail cars. The original concept for deeper stoping lifts entailed L.H.D.'s tipping into long ore passes, rail haulage, underground crushing and hoisting to surface via the No. 1 Shaft. The suspension of the No. 1 Shaft project in 1976, due to economic difficulties, lead to the intro-duction of diesel truck haulage of ore, initially via the internal Prince Lyell Decline and now to surface via the Main Decline.

IT is with an unusual degree of personal satisfaction that I find myself in a position to pay tribute to the memory of Henry Marion Howe. One could not have spent any length of time in the presence of Dr. Howe without profiting intellectually. I do not hesitate to say that my years of association with him were the most stimulating of all my years of metallurgical study. He always impressed one with his own eager search for knowledge. Never dependent on the written word alone he sought information from anyone whose opinion he valued. His ability to piece together bits of apparently conflicting data from various sources so as to build up a logical hypothesis was unique. A small slight man with the intellect of genius he would have gone to the top in any endeavor he undertook and it was fortunate for metallurgy that its study attracted him as it did. Howe was a modest man. I like to recall an incident which left a lasting impression with me. The lab- oratory in his home, "Green Peace," was in the basement and access was by way of stairs leading down from his secretary's room. In using these stairs my attention was attracted many times to an ordinary cardboard shoe box which reposed on the shelf above the landing. It was crudely labeled on its side in black ink "Vanity Box." My curiosity was aroused to the point that I finally asked his secretary what it was. With some amusement she took the box from its shelf on the stairway, opened it and showed me its contents—numerous letters, from the foremost men of science of every civilized country throughout the world, commending his "Metallography of Steel and Cast Iron." I recall that in reply to one who thought there was not enough of Howe's own researches in his book he wrote, "Primarily I am a writer, secondarily an investigator." Howe wrote to make his readers think. No one ever strove harder than he to be right but above all, whether his viewpoint proved ultimately to be right or wrong, he was always content if by his stand, he provoked a reader to take the next step along the path to greater knowledge. I doubt that he was ever afraid to be wrong for he was always secure in the thought that his effort was guided by a sincere search for the truth. One continually searching for truth is entitled to occasional excursions up the wrong alley. A glance backward to the metallurgical confusion of some thirty to forty years ago, or need one go back so far, provides convincing proof of what a host of companions one may have in a common acceptance of ideas which the future will prove to be wholly untenable. Well over a hundred years have passed since investigators have interested themselves in the effect of increasing the temperature of iron and steel on their mechanical properties. We are told by Charles Walrandl in "Industrial Annals" for June 11, 1822, that bend tests, conducted in a Russian steel works of Prince Demidoff, on steel bars "highly heated" and bent during cooling became brittle when bent at an iris blue color. He concluded, "That when steel is heated to a temperature between 473°F and 662°F the mettle was more brittle between these limits than at a much lower or at a much higher temperature." It was a curious bit of information recognized as true to this day and still not explained satisfactorily. In 1878 Charles Houston in Annales de Mines associated this brittleness with an increase in tensile strength at 572°F. When this relatively low temperature is exceeded it is recognized that steel becomes weaker as temperature is increased up to the melting point, where no strength of practical importance remains. It is easy to believe, in fact it goes without saying, that this weakening as the temperature of a metal is increased is the result of the motion of the atoms making up the metal, a motion which itself is evidence of the temperature increase. However, if we are considering iron or steel we find that this decrease in strength is not a steady one, for, besides the increase in strength just referred to, one comes to a temperature, the critical temperature, where results of tests indicate the metal to be extremely weak and then as temperature increases to become sensibly stronger again. This apparent anomaly was made the subject of the first Howe Memorial Lecture, delivered by Albert Sauveur in 1924. It may be of interest to review these findings of Sauveur. Production of crude oil in Bahrein Island during 1938 reached the new high of 8,297,998 bbl., an increase of 535,734 bbl, over the 1937 production of 7,762,264 bbl. The monthly average during 1938 was 691,500 bbl. and the daily average 22,734 barrels. To the close of December 1938, a total of 52 producing wells have been drilled. During the year 13 producing wells were completed and 11 wells were drilling or partly completed as of Dec. 31, 1938. The total footage drilled as of Dec. 31, 1938, amounted to 165,339 ft., of which 60,739 ft. was drilled during 1938. The production from the main pay comes from a depth of approximately 2200 ft. and the gravity of the oil is 33" A.P.I.

Solvent extraction-electro- winning appears to be one of the most important processes for the future in the North American copper industry and for this reason both the SX and EW steps are furtive areas for development. This paper has the objective of reviewing the present state of the electrowinning technology. It discusses some recent equipment developments and concludes by discussing the direction the technology will likely go fn the next decade.

With the recent wider introduction of friction hoists of the Koepe type. for winding from depths of more than 3000 feet it has been found that failure by fatigue is the most common form of rope deterioration. Large numbers of wire breaks occur near the centre of the rope cross-section and it is difficult to detect these with certainty using the preferred d.c. magnetic test. For best results with conventional search coils their dimen- sions should be related to the typical wire break field pattern surrounding the longitudionally magnetised rope. The field of a broken wire was experimentally determined, using a Polish type MD6 Defectograph wire rope testing magnet and a short prepared length of rope with a movable simulated broken wire. The external field distortion perpendicular to the rope was measured by means of a gaussmeter and Hall probe. The advantages of this method are that terrestial magnetism and inherent rope "noise" have no effect on the results.

"This paper is based on data generated between October, 1986 and October, 1989, during the implementation of an Ecological Engineering close-out for a zinc mine in Northern Ontario, where 690000 tonnes of tailings contain 41.1% pyrite and 4.1% pyrrhotite. The objective was to determine rates of sulphide oxidation and iron precipitation in the tailings. Those rates are relevant for the assessment of the long-term effectiveness of biological systems employed in the removal of heavy metals from contaminated drainage issuing from tailings.Data were collected on the topography and stratigraphy of the tailings basin, subsurface temperatures and groundwater levels, and chemical analyses were made of water samples collected from a number of piezometers. The thickness of unsaturated tailings varied widely between individual piezometer locations; annual maxima ranged from 0.67 m to 3.55 m, and annual minima from 0 to 2.68 m. Sulphate concentrations ranged from 36 mg/L to 20180 mg/L; iron concentrations from 0.36 mg/L to 9938 mg/L; and zinc concentrations from 0.33 mg/L to 1123 mg/L.The geochemistry of the piezometer samples suggests that some of the initial Fe content, resulting from metal sulphide oxidation, is subsequently precipitated in the tailings pile and, possibly, in the underlying unconsolidated sediments, probably in the form of iron-hydroxide and Na-jarosite. Other metals such as Zn may be co-precipitated with Fe. The discharge of a portion of these metals to the environment would be delayed by this process. Some of the initial sulphate may also be lost from solution, probably by precipitation of gypsum; approximate saturation degrees for gypsum ranged from -3.27 to +0.47. The precipitated minerals will somewhat decrease the porosity and permeability of the tailings.Sulphide-oxidation rates, calculated using the analytical results and the estimated amount of annual recharge at the tailings site, average 0.0057 mol/kg/yr. Calculated iron-precipitation rates average 0.000386 mol/kg/yr. It is concluded that the characteristics of seepage from mining wastes may change with time, reflecting the solubilization of precipitated secondary minerals."

Some industrially relevant applications for pyrite nano/micro-particles have been proposed in the literature, such as the catalysis of chalcopyrite leaching, the removal of As(III), As(V) and Cr(VI) from solution, as photovoltaic devices, and others. Even though pyrite can be recovered from solution by flotation, for some applications it may be beneficial to provide pyrite with magnetic properties. In this work, a methodology to synthesize magnetic shell/core composites made of pyrite as the shell and either natural or synthetic magnetite as the core is presented. The size of the magnetic composite may range from tenths to hundreds of microns. The synthesis is basically made by stoichiometrically mixing iron nano/micro-particles with sulfur microparticles with magnetite particles, and bringing the mixture in an oxygen free atmosphere from 200 to 300 °C for 4 h. The composites were characterized by optical microscopy, Scanning Electron Microscopy and X-Ray diffraction.

The objective of this study was to produce coal dusts for laboratory research that are similar to mine airborne dusts in chemical, mineral, and physical characteristics. In this investigation, dusts produced in laboratory comminution equipment were compared with continuous-miner-generated dust for similarity in physical characteristics. Mining-generated dust (MGD) and bulk coal samples were first collected from an underground mining operation. The bulk samples were then processed in the laboratory for size reduction in various comminution devices. These laboratory-generated dust (LGD) samples were subjected to size and microscopic analyses. Physical properties of the dust particles were studied on a scanning electron microscope (SEM). A numerical shape coordinate system (SCS) was also developed and applied to 300 particles from each sample. Statistical analysis was then performed on the collected data and characteristics of the MGD and LGD samples were compared.

It has been well accepted that water content significantly changes the physical and mechanical properties of rocks. Experimentation data of Uniaxial Compressive Strength (UCS), Modulus of Elasticity (E) and Brazilian Tensile Strength (UTS) of sandstone showed that increasing water content from oven dried to saturated condition will decrease their values. Ultrasonic tests carried out together with the UCS tests also indicated that the sonic wave traveled faster as rock specimen became saturated. During triaxial tests, the sonic velocity changed with the applied load. It was found that constitutive behavior of dried rock specimen was dependent on the confining pressure, whereas saturated rock specimen did not seem to be dependent on the confining pressure. Dependency of failure criteria such as Mohr-Coulomb. Bieniawski and Hoek & Brown on the water content was conformed as well. In order to show the influence of water content on the stability of an underground opening, a numerical modeling, based on finite element method, was carried out. The model was run using the mentioned failure criteria.

Laboratory scale experiments were conducted to produce titanium-rich material from Panzhihua ilmenite. The results showed preoxidation with sodium salt additive especially for Na2B4O7 signif- icantly advance the reduction of iron in Panzhihua ilmenite. Acceleration mechanism of preoxidation with Na2B4O7 has been studied here. The maximum metallization of iron 92% can be obtained under conditions of preoxidation at 850? for 30 min and subsequent reduction at 1100? for 150 min. The rusting separation technique to reduced ilmenite has been further studied, obtaining titanium-rich product with TiO2 over 82% and the recovery of TiO2 above 97%.

Vatukoula is credited with the second largest population in the Colony of Fiji. Within an area comprising 550 acres are living approximately 4,500 people. The creation of automatic methane concentration control systems presupposes the use, as a control factor, of the air rates in workings and in mine as a whole. These systems present a complicated set of computers and software, including as major components the following - systems for detecting methane concentration and air rate; - telemechanics systems; - programs and means of data processing; - programs and means of air rate control in workings and main fan capacity control. The paper analyses the experience of development and exploitation of automatic methane control system in gassy mines of the USSR Donetz coal basin. INFORMATION regarding the use of manganese alloys has hitherto been incomplete and available only from widely scattered sources. This paper attempts a systematic description of properties .and uses of alloys other than manganese bronze, manganin and duralumin, which are probably the only non-ferrous alloys associated with manganese in the minds of most metallurgists.1 PROPERTIES OF MANGANESE Manganese can react either acid or basic; it is hard to obtain in the pure state; it has two different crystalline lattice structures, both of the cubic system, one stable above 850° C. and the other below 650° C., both coexisting in the intermediate range. Although the commercial product is hard and brittle, the pure metal seems to be ductile. In fact Zhemchuzhny, in Russia, was able to obtain ductile manganese and draw it to fine wires by the simple expedient of adding about 3 per cent. copper to the alumino-thermic product. Copper most probably brings the silicides, aluminides, nitrides and carbides present in the commercial product into a much less harmful form of distribution. One industrial use that can be foreseen for wrought manganese articles is as anodes for electrolytic processes in sulfate and nitrate solutions, particularly with high voltages. A practically insoluble skin of manganese peroxide is likely to form in such cases and an insoluble and strong anode material will be available.

We have a few comments to make regarding the paper and a question to ask of the authors. We note that glass containers were used in the study. Hydrofluoric acid should react with glass to produce SiFg2 in quantity which could adsorb onto the beryl surface (onto either beryllium or aluminum sites). THE importance of topography to geology is so commonly underrated as to deserve to be pointed out again and again. The relation of topography to the different branches of geology may be seen best by a glance at them all. Geology is well understood to consist of the observation of facts about rocks as materials of the earth (geognosy), and the explanation of those facts (geognosy). The facts to observe are : I. GEOMETRICAL, as (1) structure, including the dip and strike at different points, the size, shape, and position of basins and saddles; (2) vertical section, that is, the thickness of rock groups and of their parts ; (3) horizontal or geographical position. 11. This paper describes a study of the influence of non-normal loading on the indentation behaviour of single bit-teeth. Indentation experiments have been performed on a soft, isotropic limestone using both sharp and blunt 60 degree wedge-shaped indentors constrained to penetrate the rock at 0, 15, and 30 degrees to the rock surface normal. For both sharp and blunt indentors, the normal force required to produce a given normal penetration decreased as the offset of the penetration direction from the rock surface normal increased. The crater volume produced by a given normal penetration with the sharp indentor was largely independent of the penetration direction. In contrast, the crater volume produced by the blunt indentor was increased markedly by non-normal penetration at small penetration depths, because the threshold penetration for chip formation decreased with non-normal loading. The crater volume produced by a given normal force was significantly increased by non-normal penetration, and this increase was particularly pronounced with the blunt indentor. The energy required to form unit crater volume was correspondingly reduced by non-normal indentor penetration. A simple method for predicting the reduction in the rock's resistance to chip formation is outlined, which is supported by the experimental data. The implications of these findings for rotary drilling are considered.

This investigation is part of the Bureau of Mines research effort directed at advancing mineral technology and minimizing energy requirements for extractive metallurgy. The emplacement of the primary minerals petalite (LiAlSi4010) and spodumene (LiAlSi206) in the lithium pegmatites is examined on the basis of their Gibbs energies of formation determined from lithium metastltcate and oxides, using a series of proposed reactions. The reaction between spodumene, quartz, and petalite (LiAlSi206 + 25i02 [=] LiAlSi4010) apparently does not take place in nature but may be proved experimentally.

. In the early decades of the past century the method of starting iron blast-furnaces by " scatlolding-down" seems to have been in universal use for coke-furnaces and, at least in this country, for charcoal-furnaces also. It was likewise used at some of the early anthracite-furnaces, as is stated in the important " Reminiscences" printed by the late Samuel Thomas.' It had been generally superseded in Great Britain as early as 1850, by some variations of the plan now used, and was rarely used when Percy wrote.2 On the Continent it was still followed ill the 60's; and was elaborately described by Valerius in 1852. I have never read any statement as to when and by whom " scaffolding " was first dispensed with, but the following extracts from journals of my father seem to fix an authentic date for an instance in this country: " [Pittsburg] July 12, 1838.—Went with Major Wade to his foundry,etc., and he gave me a letter to D. Tyler, Esq., Farrandsville, Agent Boston Coke & Iron Co." " [Lockhaven, Pa.] July 18, 1838.—Heard there was a flat-boat going to take some gentlemen up to Farrandsville. Got on boat and to Farrandsville, 5 or 6 miles, in 1 hr. 30 min. Dined, and then delivered my letter to Ma Tyler, who showed me much attention, and everything belonging to the furnace, and had the water turned on the wheel that I might see the blowing-cylinders at work. There are two cylinders, 6-ft. stroke, -56 in. in diameter, but they find that one makes more than enough blast for the furnace.
