Single particle breakage tests have been used by a number of researchers to investigate some salient features of the complex comminution process. The characteristics of the common single particle breakage tests such as single impact, double impact and slow compression tests are examined and the results from these tests are compared. A comparison of the results from single particle breakage tests with grindability and ball mill tests is given. Application of the results from single particle breakage tests to modelling industrial comminution processes is described. The necessity for further research into single particle breakage tests to develop a simple but comprehensive technique for estimating the breakage characteristics of ores is discussed.

At the meeting of the Institute in Philadelphia, in June, 1876, it was my pleasure to read a paper on the "Manufacture and Endurance of Iron Rails." I then spoke of some trial rails which had been placed in the down track of the Philadelphia and Reading Railroad, over which passed, in addition to merchandise and passengers, most of the heavy coal traffic of that company. One of these rails, made at the Philadelphia and Reading Rolling Mill in 1870, and then placed in the track, was removed in 1876, after having carried about 55,000,000 gross tons, and was on exhibition at the Centennial Exhibition. A piece of this worn rail, twisted cold, was also shown there. One of the same series of rails was allowed to remain in the track until 1878, and short sections of this rail, as well as one not worn, to show its original shape, are presented for your inspection. A comparison of the two will show that the top of the head or tread has morn down 3/16ths of an inch during its nine years of service. It carried in that time 67,000,000 gross tons of freight, passengers, cars, and engines. This rail was made in the usual way of manufacturing iron rails at the Philadelphia and Reading Rolling Mill. The head was made from puddled iron bars, piled, heated, and rolled into bars, 41/2 and 3 inches wide by 1 inch thick, these bars, breaking joints, were made into a pile in section 9 inches square, heated and rolled into slabs 9 inches wide and 2 inches thick; the balance of the rail-pile was made of 41/2 and 3-inch bars, rolled from two-thirds old rails and one-third puddled iron, the

"Noranda Copper Smelting and Refining is a unit of Noranda Metallurgy Inc., comprising the Home smelter in Rouyn-Noranda, Quebec and the C.C.R. Refinery in Montreal East. The Home smelter provides custom smelting services for a wide variety of copper and precious metal bearing concentrates and recyclable materials, producing over 200 000 tonnes of anodes and 450 000 tonnes of sulphuric acid annually. The C.C.R. Refinery has an annual production of 360 000 tonnes of copper cathode, and is a major refiner of precious metals.Over the past twenty years, Noranda Copper has developed innovative processes and operating techniques to treat the ever increasing complexity of primary feed materials, while improving the quality of its final products, working conditions and reducing environmental emissions.This paper presents an overview of the operating practices of Noranda Copper with particular emphasis on the impact of impurities in the smelting and refining processes.IntroductionThe treatment of custom materials has been practiced by Noranda Copper since commencement of operations at the Home smelter in 1927 and the CCR refinery in 1931. Copper concentrates from a wide variety of regional, North American and overseas producers account for the bulk of the 800 000 tonnes treated annually, although recyclable and secondaries have increased in importance as feed sources in the past two decades. The geographical disadvantage of the Horne smelter compared with most custom smelters located on tidewater has provided an important incentive for Noranda Copper to develop the necessary technology and operating practices at its smelter and refinery to treat high value complex concentrates and other feeds containing significant concentrations of bismuth, antimony, arsenic, lead, tellurium, mercury, etc."

Discussion of the paper of L. D. RICKETTS, presented at the San Francisco meeting, September, 1915, and printed in Bulletin No. 100, April, 1915, pp. 711 to 737. FREDERICK LAIST, Anaconda, Mont.-I am going to tell you of some of the results we have been getting in Anaconda during the past two or three months in a large plant which was finished in May. We commenced work in Anaconda a year and a half ago on the construction of a leaching plant which was to have a capacity of 2,000 tons per day. The plant was to treat tailings from the concentrator, containing about 12 1b. of copper to the ton. During the past year we changed our plans and decided to use the flotation process on the tailings from the concentrator, which contained no oxidized copper, and apply the leaching process only to tailings which had accumulated in a large dump below the works. This dump contains about 15,000,000 tons of tailings, and since some of the copper in it is oxidized, we felt that the application of the flotation process would result in the loss of too much of the oxidized copper, particularly as time went on. In starting up we had a number of difficulties to overcome, as is usually the case. They were not of a serious character. The results obtained, so far, have been decidedly encouraging. During July the plant treated a total of 50,000 tons of tailings, or an average of 1,610 tons per clay. The extraction was about 83 per cent., which, on material of the grade treated, meant a. tailing assaying under 0.1 per cent. copper. The acid consumption was about 65 lb. per ton, and the fuel percentage in. roasting was about 4 ¼ . We expect to cut the fuel percentage in the next month or two to about 3 per cent., the high percentage during July being clue to starting up and shutting clown furnaces. We find that iron builds up in the solution to a marked degree. This is not a serious platter with us, because we have cheap sulphuric acid and can reject solution whenever it gets too foul. The extraction of silver has been remarkably good in the large plant. It has averaged better than 75 per cent. It seems that so long as we maintain salt in the solution to a percentage of 10 per cent., the extraction is good. We allowed the salt to fall off in order to find how low a percentage we could use. At about 7 per cent. the silver extraction fell to 65 per cent. This was to be expected, because silver chloride is soluble in strong brine, but not in weak brine.

About eighty miles north of the city of Antofagasta, Chile, located just below the Tropic of Capricorn, there spreads a wide desert area where copper oxide outcrops can be seen with the naked eye. Numerous old mining works and dump heaps with the green of atacamite and chrisocolla shining in the blazing sun, attest to the work done by miners in the beginning of this century. The dry desert air preserves the footstep marks, paths and trails of old cartwheels from years back. The mining area known as Michilla and Panizos Blancos, is located on the high plateau at 3000 ft above sea level. Around 1920 a Bleichert ropeway was built, which carried ores from the best known mine to a wharf at the Michilla bay. High grade silicious ores were shipped to the Gatico Smelter further north or to smelters in the United States or Japan.

The North Texas district incorporated in this paper corresponds with the Railroad Commission's District No. 9, and includes the counties of Archer, Baylor, Clay, Cooke, Foard, Hardeman, Jack, Knox, Montague, Wichita, Wilbarger, and Young.† Table I,Oil and Gas Production in North Texas District, has been changed to conform with the nomenclature of pools designated by the Commission in order to facilitate compilation of the data, since most of the companies operating in the area are coming more and more to recognize one central authority in the matter of naming each new oil pool. No effort is being made to discuss the structural characteristics of the region, since it is generally known by oil men that most of the oil and gas comes from Pennsyl-vanian, with some of less importance from the Mississippian and Ordovician. Development during 1944 There were 1550 wells drilled during 1944, an increase of 450. Of this number, 677 were completed as oil wells, and 11 as gassers. Production increased 1,505,025 bbl., making the year's total 43,172,005 bbl. of oil having an average gravity of 40". Development generally, however, was somewhat disappointing. The 47 new pools, extensions, or new pay horizons in old fields, had a combined initial production of only 19,146 bbl. It is estimated that these wells added approximately 10,000,000 bbl. to the reserves. The largest single addition to the reserves was in the Caddo conglomerate in the Hildreth pool, Montague County. During the year, 66 wells were completed as the result of three extensions, I to 136 miles west, northwest and north of the field. Young, Archer, and Clay were the most active counties. Eleven new potential - oil fields were developed in Young County, nine in Archer and nine in Clay. Outlook for 1945 In spite of the fact that exploration as a whole was disappointing in 1944, prospects for increased development are bright for 1945. At the close of last year, 2.1 geophysical crews were operating in the district, which, together with the Ohio Oil Company's No. I W. R. Ross, a wildcat Strawn discovery in King County, 1 1/2 miles beyond the west boundary of district 9, stimulated a lease play extending over four counties. A new logging method has been developed, based on measurement of the nuclear magnetism of formation fluids. The nuclear magnetism log (NML) is the only log that responds solely to formation fluids. It operates equally well in both oil-base and water-base muds and in empty holes, and can be used in all kinds of formations except strongly magnetic ones. Two separate NML measurements can be made, one of which provides a continuous formation fluid curve. This fluid curve is called the free fluid log (FFL) and is believed to indicate a minimum effective porosity in most formations. The FFL not only delineates fluid-containing zones, but provides an excellent correlation curve that can be obtained under conditions where conventional correlation logs are ineffective. Preliminary tests indicate that the second kind of NML measurement may help distinguish oil and water zones and provide information concerning permeability and wettability. (The FFL itself appears to provide some information on permeability.) The second kind of NML measurement requires stopping the logging tool for a short time opposite a zone of interest and taking more extensive NML data that can be displayed as nuclear magnetic relaxation curves. In some instances, oil and water saturations for the region immediately adjacent to the borehole can be read from these relaxation curves. INTRODUCTION In 1946, Bloch, Hansen and Packard and Purcell, Torrey and Pound3 independently announced the successful demonstration of the phenomenon of nuclear magnetic resonance. During the past 13 years, there have been many applications of nuclear magnetic resonance, including applications to the study of chemical structure and to the measurement of magnetic field strengths. Preliminary experiments on the feasibility of using nuclear magnetism measurements in well logging were made independently by California Research Corp. and Varian Assoc., the Varian work being sponsored by the Byron Jackson Tools, Inc. Since then a cooperative research program on nuclear magnetism logging has been carried out by the Byron Jackson Div. and Research Center of Borg-Warner Corp., and California Research Corp., subsidiary of Standard Oil Co. of California. The use of nuclear magnetism in well logging is of special interest because it offers a way of making direct measurements on the hydrogen in the formation fluids and not on the rock matrix. Within the past 1 1/2 years, successful measurements have been made with a research model logging tool in wells in California, Tex as, Utah, Louisiana and Wyoming. NUCLEAR MAGNETISM SIGNALS Polarization, Relaxation and Precession Many atomic nuclei possess magnetic moments and spins; that is, they are similar in some respects to bar-magnet and gyroscope combinations. Molecules and their nuclei are subject to thermal motion, which has a scrambling effect, tending to leave as many nuclear spins oriented in any one direction as in any other. However, if a magnetic field is applied, the magnetic nuclei tend to align in the direction of the field. The scrambling and aligning forces compete with each other, with the result that a few more spins are oriented parallel to the field than in other directions. This gives a net magnetization, or polarization, which is directly proportional to the strength of the applied magnetic field (aligning influence) and inversely proportional to the absolute temperature (scrambling influence). When the magnetic field in, or temperature of, a liquid sample containing protons is changed, the new equilibrium value of proton polarization is not established immediately but requires an amount of time which depends on the nature of the hydrogen-containing materials. The process of approaching the equilibrium value of polarization is called relaxation.'.' Polarization is a vector quantity, and the components parallel to and perpendicular to the magnetic field must be considered separately. Relaxation of the component parallel to the field is called "thermal relaxation", or "longitudinal relaxation", and the corresponding time for this component of non-equilibrium polarization to decay by a factor of e (natural log base) is denoted T. The relaxation of the perpendicular component is called "transverse relaxation", and the corresponding relaxation time is denoted T,. The potential energy of a magnet in a uniform field depends on the angle the magnet makes with the field; therefore, a change of the component of net polarization parallel to the magnetic field involves an exchange of energy between the spin system and the thermal motion of the molecules, leading to the term thermal relaxation for the relaxation of this component. The following notes deal chiefly with changes from steam to electric drives, or, in the case of the Bellevue pumps, from air to electric. Where electric power can be purchased or generated cheaply it can be used to advantage and is generally more economical than steam, especially in places remote from the central power-plant. Nothing could be more simple than the operation of electrical gear. It does not require a competent engineer constantly on the alert, oiling and watching bearings, and maintenance is at a minimum. The ease with which the current is transmitted from its source to where it must do its work is one of its greatest advantages. Transmission losses are very low. Generally speaking, the smaller the plant the lower the loss and 90 per cent, and better, efficiency is easily attained. In and around Bellevue 2300-volt, three-phase, is the standard distributing pressure; our power requirements and the distances transmitted, for the present, do not require more than this. Most of the heavier motors are 2300-volt .machines, which eliminates the cost and possible troubles of step-down transformers, and makes for a cheaper and less bulky motor. This applies to two fan, two hoist, and two compressor motors, the smallest being 75 and the largest 520 horse power. The standard pressure on power lines to all inside pumps is 550 volts, and 220 volts is general for the the tipple. While 110 volts is used for house and office lighting service, it is not economical around and in the mine. No matter what kind of device is used to lock and protect the lamps, they are invariably missing.

ABSRACT: In this paper numerical simulation of jointed block mass behaviour obtained in an experimental study has been presented. Singh et al. (2002) conducted extensive tests on the jointed model materials with several joint configurations. The results of this experimental study were used to validate the strength behaviour of numerical block mass model developed using professionally available software. This software basically contains different kinds of material models. From the results of numerical simulation the existence of strength anisotropy was observed. The strength anisotropy so obtained has been compared with the experimental values reported by Singh et al. (2002). The anisotropic curves in both cases are U-shaped with flat base. They show good agreement in sliding mode of failure zone in which inclination ß (= 90° - ?) of joint set-I lie between 20° to 40° for all cases of interlocking. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: In dieser numerischen Papiersimulation des verbundenen Blockmasse Verhaltens, das in einer experimentellen Studie erhalten wird, ist dargestellt worden. Singh et al. (2002) leiteten umfangreiche Tests auf den verbundenen vorbildlichen Materialien mit einigen gemeinsamen Konfigurationen. Die Resultate dieser experimentellen Studie wurden verwendet, um das Stärke Verhalten des numerischen Blockmasse Modells zu validieren, das mit professionell vorhandener Software entwickelt wurde. In a paper contributed by W. A. Goodyear, M.E., on "Water Gas as Fuel," read at the Boston Meeting, February, 1883,* the following statenlent was made: "The latest experiments on a scale of some magnitude in our citier, in the way of heating buildings and furnishing power for manufacturing purposes, have been by the distribution of high-presslire steam through pipes laid in the streets. Hilt these experiments (1) have not hitherto been very successful; and when we consider the high cost and (2) the great and unavoidable loss of heat and power, which always accompany the conveyance of high-pressnre steam to any considerable distance in pipes, to say nothing of (3) certain practical difficulties in the management of the pipes themselves, (4) it is evident that all such methods must eventually disappear before a system which can furnish a cheap gas of great heating power, easily distributed wherever wanted, without requiring pipes to stand pressures of 50 to 75 pounds per square inch, and (5) without keeping the whole mass of ground in the streets through which it passes hot, gratis, for a distance of ten or fifteen feet, in all directions around the pipes!' For the purpose of controverting Mr. Goodyear's statements in regard to steam-distribution in cities, I hare numbered the points made in his indictment, my principal object being, not a professional discussion of the technical and theoretical merits of steam vs. watergas, but a simple statement of facts, in regard to the present state of the street system of steam distribntion. Taking Mr. Goodyear's points in their order: 1. Concerning what he terms " These experiments," saying that they " have not hitherto been very successful," I propose to show, that the problem of stearn-distribution has passed beyond the experimental stage, and that its practical solution is highly successful. Without blasting there can be no roads, no hospitals, no factories, not even foundations for homes. Yet in 1960 the only way to design a blast was by trial/error. By comparison, bridges were already designed by calculations before being actually built. This was possible because equations based on the fundamental principles of science existed with which all the stresses in the bridge could be calculated. In 1960 no equations based on the fundamental principles of science existed with which the mechanisms that take place inside the rock mass during a blast could be calculated. Since then the main author made it the objective of his research to seek such equations, and to validate that they gave accurate answers by means of experiments in the field, experiments made in co-operation with mines, quarries and the explosives industry; results have been reported in some 90 publications.These equations now deal with essentially all aspects of a bench blast: the intensity of the shock wave and the fragmentation size distribution throughout the rock mass; the movement of all the fragments into the muck pile; the fly rock and vibrations from the blast; etc.; are presented examples of such equations. They are now assembled into a computer simulator called Blaspa accessible on the Web, with which one can design a blast just as a bridge is designed. An example is presented. The reason to design a blast by simulations rather than solely by trial/error is that if it leads to damage, it is only after the actual blast that the blast design is realized to cause damage. If however the blast design had been simulated before the blast, then the risk of damage is identified before the blast and is prevented by redesigning the blast. Examples of such situations are presented. The need to a void damage is very necessary because the public is becoming opposed to blasting. When a blast does cause damage, and people learn that the blast was designed solely by trial/error even though simulation was available and would have prevented damage, they become even more strongly against blasting; they may succeed in getting a quarry closed. Their objections to unchecked blasting are not unreasonable, especially as simulating a blast with Blaspa on the Web is a very simple procedure.

Up to the beginning of World War I, the American ferro-alloy industry was in its infancy and largely dependent on Europe. During that War, capacity was over expanded. Later recovery and commercial and scientific development have resulted in an industry which in 1957 produced 1.8 million tons of ferro-alloys. THE ferro-alloy industry is today an important element of the industrial structure of the United States. Its output is valued at almost half a billion dollars annually and its products are basic not only to National defense but also to the peacetime standard of living. This has not always been so. The ferro-alloy industry from late in the last century has grown from small beginnings, nurtured by the demand for stronger, tougher materials; by the search for steels capable of absorbing severe impact loads and resisting corrosive media and high temperatures; and also by the need for electrical and electronic specialties. Conversely, the ferro-alloy industry has grown because it developed improved steels and alloys by extensive research, and because it was able to show to steel makers the advantages accruing from the more extensive and the more economical use of alloying elements. The industry has grown in scope from producing a few grades of ferro-alloys of the more common metals-manganese, chromium, vanadium, silicon, titanium, tungsten, and molybdenum-until there are today some 150 compositions of ferro-alloys available to the steel maker, including such elements as columbium, zirconium, and boron. In 1912 the industry produced 360,000 tons of alloys valued at about $12,000,000, while 1957 production figures show an output of 1.8 million tons worth $440,000,000. In the United States, the history of an industry is largely the history of the companies making up this industry; hence, this paper will briefly trace the development of the most important ferro-alloy-producing companies. Quite varied have been the reasons that caused the different companies to move into the ferro-alloy field; the Willson Aluminum Co., seeking methods of producing aluminum, succeeded with the production of calcium carbide, and their developing electric furnace skills led them to the production of ferro-silicon and ferrochromium alloys. Willson was the predecessor of the Electro Metallurgical Co. of Union Carbide. "The Hardie group of cinnabar claims is in the interior of British Columbia; 25 miles northwest of the city of Kamloops. It is one of a number of mercury; properties scattered along a north trending belt 20 miles long and up to 5; miles wide. In all but one of these properties cinnabar is associated with; dolomite veinlets in zones of carbonate alteration in bedded rocks of Triassic; and Cretaceous (?) age; or in intrusives cutting these bedded rocks. No dolomite alteration or cinnabar mineralization is known in the undoubted Tertiary rocks adjacent to the mercury belt.The mercury showings of the Hardie group lie for the most part in a granitic stock cutting Cretaceous (?) volcanics. The rock in this intrusive shows marked variations in texture and has been described in earlier reports as granite and granodiorice, granite porphyry, and trachyte or dacite porphyry. At Hardie mountain the cinnabar mineralization, unlike that of the other properties, is associated with a fine-grained, almost chalcedoni c, quartz; carbonates, though present, are of minor importance. Some of the most interesting showings are found in an adit in the southeastern part of the property where cinnabar mineralization shows a very distinct structural but not a genetic relationship to a brown porphyry dyke 2 to 8 feet wide cutting a phase of the stock that may best be described as aplitic"

VERY little information is available in the literature concerning the solubility of magnesium in titanium. Aust and Pidgeon&apos; report the solubility of titanium in magnesium to be 0.0025 pct at 650°C and 0.015 pct at 850°C. X-ray diffraction studies failed to detect any evidence of solid solubility. Based on the fact that the addition of titanium to magnesium increases the c/a ratio of magnesium, Busk&apos; suggested that the Mg-Ti system, like the Mg-Zr, is a peritectic. Eisenreich- eported the solubility of titanium in magnesium to be 0.003 pct at 655°C and 0.064 pct at 760°C. Removal of hydrogen from the melt increased the solubility of titanium to 0.115 pct at 800°C. Eisenreich proposes a peritectic-type diagram for the high magnesium side of the system. Recent work&apos; with Ti-Mg diffusion couples indicate that the solid solubility of titanium in magnesium is extremely small and that there is limited solid solubility of magnesium in titanium. Experimental work on the Ti-Mg system is complicated by the fact that the boiling point of magnesium is considerably below the melting point of titanium. Consequently, the usual alloying methods are impractical. Alloying was accomplished in this investigation by sheath-rolling compressed compacts." The alloys were made from titanium sponge and high purity magnesium. Chemical analysis of the sponge showed 0.04 pct Mg, <0.005 pct Al, <0.001 pct Cu, 0.05 pct Fe, 0.022 pct Mn, <0.0025 pct Ni, 0.007 pct Si, <0.005 pct V, and <0.01 pct Zn. All heat treating was conducted in a protective atmosphere by encapsulating the specimens in fused silica ampules under a partial pressure of helium. Equilibrium was achieved by holding the specimens at temperature for periods of 24 to 120 hr. The alloys were hot rolled, cold rolled, and annealed prior to solution heat treatment. Fig. 1 shows the constitutional diagram obtained for the Ti-Mg system up to 1.5 pct Mg. Oxygen was known to be present in the alloys; therefore, it is necessary to consider the alloys as ternary rather than binary and the diagram should be viewed as a plot of a section through the Ti-Mg-0 system. Other investigatorso have shown that the addition of oxy- gen to titanium stabilizes the a phase. The data presented in Fig. 1 indicate that the addition of magnesium to titanium tends to stabilize the p phase. Armour Research Foundation7 has shown that the addition of magnesium to zirconium lowers the a transus and is classified as a p stabilizer in that system. Magnesium is soluble in solid titanium to the extent of at least 1.5 pct in both the a and /3 phases. No intermetallic compounds or magnesium-rich phases were observed either by light microscopy or X-ray diffraction. However, this does not negate the possibility that such phases exist at higher alloy concentrations.

This paper constitutes the third progress report on a national survey of the use of detachable bits in metal mines. It presents comparative costs of drilling with conventional and detachable bits and describes the operating practice in rock drilling and the reconditioning of drill steel and bits at 10 mines not discussed in previous reports.3/ ACKNOWLEDGMENTS This report has been prepared with the assistance and cooperation of the officials and staff members at the mines visited. Many organisations, including those in the resources industry have Board-level endorsed principles on sustainability. A key challenge, however, is how to systematically integrate these high-level principles into the design and operation of mineral processing plants. In an effort to meet this challenge the Sustainable Operations framework, called SUSOP®, was conceived and developed through the Corporative Research Centre for Sustainable Resource Processing (CSRP) in Australia. Somewhat analogous to HAZOP (Hazard and Operability Studies) which is well entrenched in the resources industry, the key aim of SUSOP® is to produce a holistic, systematic and rigorous methodology for identifying and assessing sustainability opportunities and risks. This paper argues the need for such a sustainability framework, presents the key elements of SUSOP®, highlights how case studies enhanced its development and articulates the reasons why such a framework will have growing importance into the future.

It is well known that there are many ways to process copper concentrates into copper anodes using the pyrometallurgical route. All modern copper smelting technologies are fundamentally energy efficient and environmentally safe options, and therefore choosing one depends on the desired capacity range, feed impurity levels, plant location, flexibility needs, overall energy use, and of course smelter economics in both the short and long term. This paper focuses on comparing different solutions which have potentially the lowest variable opex (operational expense), meaning in practice finding out which technology offers the best chances for profit maximization under certain scenarios. For the comparison, we chose to have a closer look at Outotec Flash Smelting (FSF) – Peirce-Smith Converting (PSC), Outotec Flash Smelting (FSF) – Outotec- Kennecott Flash Converting (FCF), Outotec Ausmelt TSL Smelting (ASF) - Peirce-Smith Converting (PSC), Outotec Ausmelt TSL Smelting (ASF) - Outotec Ausmelt TSL Converting (ACF), Mitsubishi Smelting Process (MIT), Bottom Blowing Reactor (BBR) – Bottom Blowing Continuous Converting (BCC), and Side Blowing Furnace (SBF) - Top Blowing Converting (TBC) since these seem to be the main state-of-art technologies now being applied in many recent copper smelter projects around the world. The work was carried out by modelling each smelting route by using the new HSC SIM 9 simulation software and applying operation time, energy, and consumables consumption numbers for each unit process and stream. Combined with cost data, the exercise produced a rich set of information which will be shown in detail for each area per scenario. The authors’ goal here was to provide a fair comparison where each technology can be evaluated from various perspectives such as electricity use or refractory consumption. INTRODUCTION Copper can be produced either pyrometallurgically or hydrometallurgically. The hydrometallurgical route is used only for a limited amount of the world’s copper production (~20%) and is normally only considered in connection with in-situ leaching of copper ores. On the other hand, most of the copper extraction from Cu-Fe-S minerals is pyrometallurgical (~80%) (Schlesinger 2011, ICSG 2017). "Mine ventilation is in every underground mine a crucial process to ensure mine safety as well as acceptable working conditions. On the other hand is also a major cost factor depending on air requirement and air resistance. Due to the fact that the special layout of mines develop over time, ventilation systems change as well. This may result in complex systems which are suffering severe problems and low efficiency. With attention to the mine safety and costs, ventilation systems have to be controlled repeatedly and optimized continuously to fit changing conditions. The project “Improvement of ventilation systems in narrow vein mines” has been commenced with measuring and data collection in the Bogala Mine, Sri Lanka. This over 150 year’s old graphite mine consists of about 20 levels. The resulting ventilation system is highly complex and suffers problems like high temperatures and humidity as well as a mixing of fresh and used air on lower levels. To solve these problems and to optimize the system the complete ventilation system had been measured on-site first. The gained data have been used for simulations to develop and select an optimal and cost efficient solution. OBJECTIVE As an important process in mining ventilation is a major cost factor and can determine the economic feasibility of a mine. Due to the production mine layouts develop over time and mines increase in size and depth while the ventilation system becomes more complex and may suffer severe problems and inefficiency. Therefore mine ventilation systems have to be controlled and optimized regarding the general requirement of mine safety and health of the miners as well as the costs. Depending on the deposit type, depth, mining method, climate and as well corresponding laws and regulations the possible solutions are varying strongly. The work carried out paid special attention to the improvement of ventilation in narrow vein mines in tropical climate, in this case the graphite mine “Bogala” in Sri Lanka, South Asia."
