"The Bureau of Mines determined coal-cutting forces and primary dust generation of four styles of radial gage bits as used on end rings of continuous mining machines. Direct comparisons for reference were made with two widely used conical plumb-bob types having 60° and 90° (nominal) included tip angles. The cutting forces for all of the gage bits were similar to those of the 60°-tip plumb-bob bit. All bits except the RAD-3 gage bit generated similar amounts of primary total dust at shallow cutting, but during deeper cutting, the amounts varied and the gage bits produced as much as 2-1/2 times the dust produced by the 60° bit. This seems atypical since past experience has always shown differences in dust generation at shallow cutting. The specific energy was more like that found previously with other bits, since the values were spread at shallow cutting but became nearly similar at deeper cuts. The 90° bit and the RAD-3 gage bit are not recommended for use except in extremely difficult cutting conditions where dust and forces are of secondary importance. The choice among the remaining four bits can be made on the basis of dust, energy, forces, or cost, as circumstances dictate. INTRODUCTIONThe Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969, with revisions in 1977, was enacted to ensure more healthful and safer working conditions for miners. The Bureau of Mines coal-cutting research facility at Twin Cities (MN) is examining fundamental aspects of the cutting system, including generation of primary dust causing pneumoconiosis in miners and ignition of methane by the frictional impact of cutting bits used on continuous mining machines (CMM's). The cutting system is defined as the cutter-mineral interface area with all its variables, e.g., forces, speed, cutter geometry, bit-mounting geometry, and wear. It has become obvious over the past several years that the cutting system directly affects the economics and design of the ""total system,"" which is defined as all areas of the operation, from the mine face to the preparation plant, which support the mineral recovery by cutting tools to obtain a salable product."

INTRODUCTION In inclined sedimentary strata slope failure may occur by sliding along bedding and along a discontinuity or weak zone, as illustrated in Fig. 1. This mode of failure may be called 'bi-linear', as the failure surface is comprised of two linear or approximately linear segments. This type of failure has been suggested for the famous Frank Slide, Alberta, Canada (Cruder and Krahn, 1973) in which an estimated 90 M 5 tons (8.97 x 10 MN) of rock separated from Turtle Mountain and buried the town of Frank. Also, with the increasing depth of open pits and the construction of highways through inclined sedimentary strata this mode of failure is of major concern to the rock slope stability engineer. A computer program for calculating factors of safety for this slope failure mode is provided and includes the ability to vary shear strengths of potential slide surfaces, ground water elevations and wedge geometry. LIMITING EQUILIBRIUM MODEL The simple limiting equilibrium model used in the analysis is shown in Fig. 2. It is assumed that jointing is orthogonal to bed- ding and that the interface between the upper and lower wedges there- fore corresponds to a joint plane or planes. "The objective of this work is the scientific justification and development of efficient and environmentally-friendly method of bulk concentrate preparation for selection with application of microbiological practices. This research suggests to apply Pseudomonas Japonica bacterial culture to the bulk concentrate before the selection circuit in order to clear the surface of sulphides from the xanthate skin. It is also suggested to apply bacterial consortium Ochrobactrum ?nthropi and Pseudomonas aeruginosa JCM 5962 for desorption of diesel residual concentrations. High-efficient and environmentally friendly method of copper-molybdene and lead-zinc bulk concentrate selection was developed based on theoretical and experimental research work with application of microbiological practices. In comparison with conventional methods (steaming, sodium sulphide washing) the above suggested bio-technological method of bulk concentrate preparation before selection cycle will allow to reduce material and power expenditures, and it is also environmentally friendly. INTRODUCTION High-efficient selection of sulphide bulk concentrate is gained exclusively after collecting agent is removed from mineral surface. Therefore, the problem of bulk concentrate preparing before the selection cycle is acute, since the further technological parameters of the subsequent separation depends on the effectiveness of pulp preparation. Existing traditional ways of bulk concentrate preparation. such as washing or steaming, are characterized by high energy and material costs in industrial conditions [1,2]. The microbiological treatment before separation of the bulk concentrate into different kind of concentrates appear one of perspective processes for treatment of bulk concentrates [3,4]. At the present time, the world practice of processing mineral raw materials demonstrates the wide application of technologies using microorganisms: bacterial leaching and oxidation, purification of industrial wastewater. This is due to the fact that biotechnological methods are environmentally safe, low-cost, and suitable for refining complex ores and raw materials of industrial origin."

The exact application of sustainable development in the mining and minerals industry has precipitated considerable debate in recent years. Since the publication of the Brundtland Commission?s Report, Our Common Future, numerous attempts have been made to define sustainable development in the mining context. The inability of the Brundtland Report to outline an effective sustainability framework, combined with its contention that no single blueprint for sustainable development exists, has prompted many academics and practitioners to provide viewpoints on the application of sustainable development in the mining and minerals industry. This paper provides an overview of the many groups of assessments made of sustainable development in the mining industry. Sustainability assessment and reporting for this industry sector using indicators are also addressed.

The criteria for use included acceptability of results, flexibility of equipment, ease of application, and economics. The intention of this paper is to give a review of the present status of lignite mining in the so-called Gulf States in the United States of America, namely Texas, Arkansas, Mis- sissippi and Louisiana. The situation in these states is similar to the situation in Australia in that "Strip Mining - 45 m and Beyond" repre- sents the main technical problem to be over- come in the near future. The solution lies in the application of the bucket wheel excavator.

During fiscal year 1966 the Bureau of Mines published 99 scientific and technical papers and engaged in 67 research projects on petroleum, natural gas, and oil shale. A basic appropriation of $3.4 million was supplemented by $1 million in cooperative funds from other Governmental agencies and industry groups. Petroleum conservation was advanced by development of scientific knowledge and improvement of technologic methods in both the extraction and utilization of petroleum, natural gas, and oil shale. Experimental work was carried out at research centers in Bartlesville, Okla., and Laramie, Wo., and in laboratories in Morgantown, W. Va., and San Francisco, Calif. ACHIEVEMENTS IN FISCAL YEAR 1966 Bureau of Mines--Petroleum Research in fiscal year 1966 (July 1, 1965- June 30, 1966) was involved in many public issues--air pollution, peaceful uses of nuclear explosives, utilization of oil-shale resources, computerization of recovery-stimulation techniques, and fuels for supersonic airplanes. Scientific contributions included compositional studies of petroleum and oil shale, determination of thermodynamic properties of petroleum compounds, development of analytical techniques, and correlations of petroleum properties with geologic occurrence. Technologic advances included rock-fracturing research, in situ combustion studies, waterflood techniques, use of radio-tracers to study stability of petroleum fuels, and hydrogenation as a tool to prepare shale-oil products.

QUICKSAND far below the surface, stopped two attempts by the Potash Co. of America to sink a third shaft to a potash bed that lies 1000 ft below the southern New Mexico desert. Virtually all methods of grouting were employed in the two failures without any indication of consolidation of the flowing sand. Sinking the South Shaft at the Carlsbad potash mine seemed an almost insurmountable task, until freezing was employed as a final resort. This process that proved to be the answer may be defined as "the sinking of a shaft by freezing, consists of the formation, in the water-bearing strata, of a large block of frozen ground in which it is possible to sink a shaft without danger of an influx of water, providing the ice-wall between the water outside and the shaft itself is strong enough to resist the hydrostatic pressure." Freezing Method Used Extensively in Europe Successful frozen ground shaft sinking projects had been completed in Europe, and Russel G. Haworth, resident manager of the Potash Co. of America, went abroad in search of the know-how needed for the New Mexico undertaking. The freezing process, with a history of two failures at the time, was first successfully employed by Poetsch in 1885 at the Houssu Collieries near Haine St. Pierre, Belgium. Poetsch contracted to sink the remaining 64 ft of an uncompleted shaft through water laden strata from a depth of 190 ft to a depth of 254 ft. This work was in progress until 1887. The freezing and sinking consumed more than two years. As a result of early failures, the process was not favorably received until soon after the turn of the century. The accurate prediction of success in a given application was made possible by the concerted effort and study of a group of European engineers. Means of accurate deviation measurement and control were devised, the nature and properties of frozen water laden soil (the ice wall) were investigated, a thorough and rational basis of refrigeration load calculation developed, and concurrently the efficiency and dependability of refrigeration machinery was greatly advanced. Numerous shafts in Germany, Belgium, France, and England today testify to the reliability and economical surety of the freezing method. Applied to the South Shaft, which is circular in cross-section and 15-ft diam, the freezing method consisted of drilling holes 350-ft deep, through the water bearing strata into impervious ground-the freeze hole pattern being concentric with the shaft and 31-ft diam. The holes were cased with pipe closed on the bottom end. Smaller tubes were placed inside these casings and connected to a header supplying chilled brine from a refrigeration plant. The brine descended in the tubing to the bottom of the hole and ascended through the annular space between the two pipes to the top of the casing; flowed into the return header and back to the refrigeration plant. This paper deals with the determination of hydraulic conductivity of the coastal coralline limestone aquifer of Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. This coastal area has witnessed urban development and establishment of towers which requires deep foundations, excavation and dewatering of huge quantities of unconfined groundwater. It is occupied with successive layers of soft detrital and consolidated massive cavernous coralline limestone of the Quaternary age. These layers are encountered at a depth of 1.5m and extend for more than 100m. Hydraulic conductivity values were obtained by analyzing the pumping tests data under steady and transient state conditions. Hydraulic conductivity values help in selecting the proper and safe dewatering system, as well as determination of discharge rates and quantities of groundwater to be withdrawn. Test results obtained from two surveyed sites showed that the values of hydraulic conductivity are greatly variable. It ranges between 118.1 and 1559.6 m/day at the first site, whereas at the second one it ranges between 94.6 and 350 m/day. These high values are attributed to the cavernous nature of the water-bearing formation. Jeddah city could be divided into three different dewatering zones extending from north to south parallel to the coast line. Well point dewatering system could be applied in the first zone while ditches and sumps are the most suitable dewatering method in the second and third zones. Dewatering using deep wells in such highly permeable formation will require withdrawal of huge quantities of water which will be accompanied by washing out fine sediment filling the cavities in the surrounding areas. This will badly affect the nearby buildings through settlement, crakes and other structural damages. Therefore, construction of grouting plug/blanket with thickness of 3.0 m at a depth of 20.0 m is recommended. This depth will be enough to support the plug against the hydrostatic pressure. Moreover, it is highly recommended to transfer the site into closed box, by using diaphragm walls or secant bored piles.

The present discussions throughout the civilized world on the subject of gold for monetary purposes may seem due to general economic conditions during the past year. But for some years previously a small group of authorities had warned the world against the continued disregard of an equitable distribution of existing gold reserves, and had urged the necessity of keeping the supply of new gold equal to the monetary demand, which, according to world production and trade figures, increases on the average about 3 per cent per annum. In 1927, Sir John Aird, the President of The Canadian Bank of Commerce, stated that the United States could spare a billion dollars of the supply it then held, 4 ½ billion dollars. About a year and a half ago the Professor of Banking and Currency in the University of London, Mr. T. E. Gregory, said, "If the world finds it impossible to modify its habits so far as to make an organized effort to economize gold seem less Utopian, it must be prepared to pay for its bad habits, in this and other respects, by a possible loss of material welfare." These clear-cut statements were not heeded, perhaps for one reason because most countries were in the flush of prosperity, and making such great demands upon the mining fraternity for industrial materials as to distract attention, at least to some degree, from gold mining. Now the world knows it faces serious problems, first, of making? fully effective its present monetary reserves, which, although badly distributed, are as a whole ample for the needs of the present, and secondly, of preventing a shortage in the supply of new gold, one that may come within the next few years if the present sources of supply are not enlarged, and if there is no marked change in the technique of gold production.

Extraction of valuable resources from complex orebodies will become more common. This is obvious for two reasons. First, the cleaner and more readily processed ores have continually been depleted through centuries of mining. Second, new technologies have evolved for effectively handling complex ores. One of these new processes has been in place at Sunshine since 1984. Based on sulfuric acid oxygen pressure leaching with nitric acid as an oxidizer, this patented technology allows silver and copper to be efficiently recovered from a complex sulfide concentrate. As efficient as it is, this process represents novel technology found nowhere else on an industrial scale. As such, a research program was undertaken in 1989 to optimize this leach process and to better understand it. From this study, several potential plant improvements were found and recommended. As a result, two of these options, nitric acid replacement by sodium nitrite and concentrate regrind are now used in day to day operation at Sunshine. Patenting of these changes was recently accomplished (1). Thus, the development, perceived mechanisms, plant integration and potential applicability of this technology will be covered in this paper.

SXFIT is the latest in a series of programs developed in our group to model solvent extraction systems of increasing complexity. SXFIT permits the user complete freedom to define the constituents from which the composition of each phase is to be specified in the data and from which all species of a model for a system are assumed to be formed. Activity coefficients in the nonaqueous and aqueous phases, water activity, apparent molar volumes of aqueous species, and solution density needed for the conversion of concentration from the molarity to the molarity scale are all taken into account by the program. Several extraction systems relevant to nuclear-waste treatment were modeled successfully using this program. As an example, the cesium extraction efficiency of the CSSX process chosen by the USDOE for cesium removal from high-level waste stored at the Savannah River Site can be predicted correctly for varying feed composition.

A great deal of information has been presented and published on the danger from flyrock created from blasting operations. The creation of flyrock is not specific to any one blasting operation. Flyrock is certainly not a stranger to blasting operations conducted in the mining industry and its effects are well known. Flyrock is among the leading causes of mine blasting injuries. Awareness and diligence is the message that must continue to be stressed and followed to reduce the potential for creating flyrock from blasting operations and to reduce the hazard it presents. A recent accident that resulted in a serious injury at a limestone mine in Pennsylvania bears witness to the ever-present danger of flyrock created from blasting operations.

Within the framework in which future exploitations for Codelco-Chile Divisi=n El Teniente are situated, regarding the deepening of its reserves and the geotechnical problems that affect their recovery, it becomes strategic to evolve with new variants, which make deep mining possible. Codelco ChileÆs Divisi=n El Teniente is progressing within its long-term planning the exploitation of a sector called Esmeralda, which includes its removal through the gravitational caving method (panel caving). It is planned to use pre-caving, which basically consists of developing and undermining the undercut level, without having developed the infrastructure of the production and transport levels. This is carried out in order to achieve a better redistribution of the stresses, thus obtaining higher quality in the infrastructure development of these levels as well as less risk. The extraction reserves for this area, estimated through the opportunity cost selection criteria, were determined at 348 million tons with an average grade of 1.014 per cent Cu. The project carried out geological and geotechnical studies in order to prevent the geomechanical risks of the sector to be exploited, which is a site conformed totally by primary ore. Lithologically, it occurs mainly in Andesite, located at the western limit by Brecha Braden Pipe. There are also varieties of porphyries and hydrothermal breaches of anhydrite. The Esmeralda Mine production program will increase from 4000 tpd (average) in 1998 to its 45 000 tpd rate of production estimated for the year 2005. The approved investment for the period 1995 to 1999 is $US 150 million, out of a total $US 213 million for the project. At feasibility study level and before the project, it showed a Net Present Value of $US 342 million, an Internal Rate of Return of 37 per cent and an IVAN indicator of 2.3 for a ten per cent discount rate and a copper price of 100 US cents/lb.

The Bureau of Mines studied thermodynamic properties of Al-Ni alloys con¬taining 0.54 to 30.04 atomic percent nickel with the aid of the high-temperature galvanic cell Al(1) // Al+3 (AlCl3 in NaCI.KC1) // Al-Ni alloy (1 or s). Activities of aluminum and nickel (compared with pure liquid metals as the standard state) show pronounced negative deviation from Raoult's law at 1,273 K. The properties [?G, ?Gxs, ?G ideal, ?GA1, AGxs1, ?Gni , and ?GNixs] have been derived from the experimental data and are summarized in tables and illustrations. At 1,127 K, the thermodynamic stability for the invariant three-phase equilibrium consisting of a saturated liquid, A13Ni, and A13Ni2 has been uniquely defined by an activity for aluminum of 0.751. A free energy of formation at 1,127 K of -7,940 cal/g-atom was derived for the compound A13Ni.

Downstream value-adding is a strategic issue for a country like Australia, which has a resources-driven sector of a scale that has significant impact on the national economy. The question of why producers are not doing more to ævalue-addÆ is often asked. In Australia this debate takes place within the context of: an era of unprecedented growth in demand for resources driven by the rapid urbanisation of China, India and others;impending legislation and uncertainty around carbon pricing;rapidly rising energy costs;significant supply-side shortages including infrastructure, skills and manufacturing capacity; andsignificant industry consolidation of primary resource producers with commensurate improvements in market power.There are several examples of resource-based industries which have developed their business along the complete value-chain; for example large oil and gas producers successfully span upstream and downstream operations including refining and petro-chemicals as well as retail distribution of fuel and other products. Relevant frameworks that provide insight and understanding into the strategic issues around value-adding are reviewed and examples of the application of these frameworks to companies and industries which have successfully adopted a strategy of integrating along the value-chain, as well as those players who have focused on parts of the value-chain are presented. The issues around value-adding in Australia are then reviewed with reference to these frameworks and it is concluded that the issue is a conflict between the objective companies who wish to maximise financial value versus the desire of governments to increase economic benefits. An approach to aligning these objectives is proposed.

"It is well known that froth phase has a controlling influence on the overall flotation performance. Froth recovery is expected to be affected by froth transportation behaviour. The latter has been represented by different volume balance and energy balance based models. In froth transportation models based on a volume balance, the froth phase is divided into different zones. The total froth residence time is the sum of the time spent in each zone and is dependent on the cell geometry, bubble burst rate and the position that bubbles enter into the froth phase. Alternatively, the froth transportation model based on an energy balance treats the froth phase as a block. In this model, froth height above the concentrate lip is being predicted by minimising the energy of the system which is dependent on the froth geometry, froth stability and froth rheology. The froth height can be used to calculate the froth efficiency of delivering mineralized bubbles from the pulp to the concentrate lip. This paper critically analyses the current models of froth transportation in flotation, and examines the limitations of these models. The importance of froth rheology, which is the resistance to the froth flow towards the discharging weir, in determining froth transportation, is also highlighted."

The isotopic variations of lead from Mississippi Valley galenas have long been used to place constraints on the sources of the lead, and on the residence the of the lead in crustal reservoirs prior to its emplacement in the Mississippi Valley province. Similar studies based on strontium isotope variations in gangue minerals associated with the lead-zinc sulphides have been neglected until Haden's (1) study of such minerals from several localities in northwestern Ohio. His work revealed two things about the mineralization. Firstly, it shoved that the average isotope composition of lead from galenas from northwestern Ohio lies on the anamalous lead line characterizing Mississippi Valley-type leads, albeit at the least radiogenic end of the entire data array. This confirm earlier assignments of the Ohio mineralization as Mississippi Valley-type (Hey1 and others (2)). Secondly, Haden (I) showed that the strontium in the calcite, strontianite and fluorite is broadly similar in isotopic composition to the strontium in the host Silurian to Devonian marine carbonates within which these minerals arc emplaced. He concluded that the mineral strontium my have been very locally derived, from the carbonate hosts.
