The studies of the mechanism of pre= cipitation and of the resulting property changes in aluminum-silver alloysl-3 have presented some new concepts of the aging reactioxl—concepts that may be fundamental in establishing a complete quantitative theory of age-hardening. With both aluminum-copper and aluminum-silver alloys, thin platelike aggregates form parallel to the Widmanstätten planes of precipitation.l,4 These platelets grow in lateral dimensions and in thickness with aging time until they arc thick enough to produce an X-ray diffraction line pattern. Their structure is that of a transition lattice which is coherent with the matrix, since the atomic spacings in the matrix and the precipitate are the same on each side of their common interface.2,4 The equilibrium precipitate forms later from and at the expense of the transition lattice. Since age-hardening occurs during the formation and growth of the transition lattice, the major contributor to the hardening no doubt is the stress condition in the matrix resulting from the matrix holding the precipitate in the coherent condition. The development of these stresses also appears to be responsible for an increase in the electrical resistance superimposed on the normal decrease resulting from a change in the concentration of the matrix during aging.3 The two consecutive reactions constituting the aging process are accompanied by characteristic microstructural alterations. The initial precipitation process results in the formation of a Widmanstatten figure, while the later transformation of the transition lattice to the equilibrium lattice is accompanied by a coalescence, in the case of aluminum-copper alloys,5 and by the appearance of light areas at the grain boundaries with aluminum-silver alloys showing a structural rearrangement of matrix and precipitate.3 This latter reaction is similar microscopically to the so-called "discontinuoils precipitation." Possibly discontinuous precipitation is a process that often if not always follows true precipitation of a coherent lattice and during which the transformation of the coherent transition lattice to the equilibrium lattice takes place accompanied by matrix recrystallization.3 Expermental Procedure The alloys were made using 99.97 per cent A1 or distilled magnesium, with

Over the past several years, the steady progress of gas lift from a mysterious art into a developing science has been traceable through the many fine papers that have appeared in Journal of Petroleum Technology. Consequently, this magazine has rightly become a standard for the serious students of gas lift all over the world. The following discussion is offered in a sincere attempt to accurately present certain topics covered in the subject paper in the light of acknowledged state of the art procedures. INSTALLATION DESIGN The first point to be questioned is the author's installation design, beginning with Eq. 6. The use of 1,200 psi in the spacing equation instead of the 1,275 psi noted as available seems, at first glance, to be a simple arithmetic error. Upon further examination, it appears evident that both this 75 psi plus the 100-psi safety factor must be subtracted from available kickoff pressure because of conditions imposed by the characteristics of the ASC valve (see Fig. B-1). Pressure-charged valve design is incorrectly penalized by spacing the first valve using only 1,100 psi. The use of such a high back-pressure makes it appear that a typical ASC installation would require no more valves than a comparable conventional valve installation. Using a value of 100-psi tree pressure, the well could be valved to 11,000 ft very conservatively with seven pressure-operated valves, but would still require 11 ASC valves. The use of 400-B/D spacing gradient for a 140-B/D rate is not an accepted practice using precharged valves. The author would have done well to note the advantages to be gained by reducing the 500-psi tree pressure, which is clearly explained by Beadle, Harlan and Brown.' In Step 1 of Part III of the continuous flow discussion, the author incorrectly applies the Poettmann and Carpenter curves.2 Item 2 is an incorrect statement. An excellent reference on this point is the paper by Baxen-dell and Thomas.' VALVE MECHANICS The next topic relates to the mechanics of precharged valves. Eq. 2 for the ASC valve can be used to describe the condition of equilibrium, wherein the valve is closed with opening pending. When this equation is used to determine relative values of casing, dome and tubing pressure with conditions approaching the transition value, some strange results are obtained. The following uses the author's symbols and values given on page 689. Fig. B-1 shows the condition that exists at the moment an ASC valve has been uncovered during the unloading process (Condition I). The obvious result is a locked condition. The basis for the curve is shown on the figure which includes 1,000 psig casing pressure to uncover the valve. If injection gas is not bled off the casing until the pressure is decreased by an amount exceeding the stabilizer discharging valve pressure, upward adjustment of the casing pressure is mandatory for the valve to open and unloading operations to continue. In Condition I the dome pressure exceeds the casing pressure by 20 psi, and the tubing pressure required to open the valve is 1,212 psig. This tubing pressure would not exist under the assumed conditions. In Condition I1 the casing pressure is increased to the dome pressure, and the tubing pressure required to open the valve is 1,102 psig. It is apparent that the casing pressure must be increased to a value exceeding the dome pressure before unloading operations could continue. In Condition I11 a maximum casing pressure of 100 psi (stabilizer charging valve set pressure) above the dome pressure is reached, and the tubing pressure required to open the valve is 549 psig. The author's statement after Eq. 5 that "the minimum tubing pressure required to open an ASC valve is equal to the casing pressure at depth less the transition pressure of the valve" is incorrect except for Condition I11 only. Otherwise, the equation is invalid.

"Electrochemical techniques are a valuable means of analyzing the passivation of commercial copper anodes. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) provides information concerning transport and reaction phenomena occurring at an electrode surface. Commercial. copper anodes of varying compositions have been examined using EIS. Experiments were conducted in a flat cell with an electrolyte of 40 gil Cu2 + and 160 gil H2S04 maintained at 65 DC. Impedance spectra were obtained at the potentials characteristic of the open circuit voltage and passive region for each anode. The spectra of the passivating films exhibited a flattened resistive/capacitive loop at middle to high frequencies and an inductive loop at low frequencies. An equivalent· circuit utilizing an inductor-resistor series in parallel with the double layer capacitance and charge transfer resistance was adequate in modeling the impedance data. The influence of anodes impurities on the components of the equivalent circuit is discussed and correlated with a hi-layer passivation model.IntroductionPassivation of copper anodes during industrial electrorefining has received considerable attention in the past few decades. Great strides have been made in understanding the roles of anode impurities [1-25], electrolysis parameters [20,26], and electrolyte chemistries [20,26]. Even so, passivation still occurs even in the most modem of refineries. The exact cause of passivation is not fully understood. It is known that the anode surface becomes covered by a passivating film. This film has been proposed to be CuS04'&5H20, Cu20, or mixed oxides. The localized concentrations of Ft, Cu+, and Cu2+ ions determines which phase is more favorable. The presence of these ions is controlled by the reaction kinetics and diffusion of species through the slimes layer.Reaction kinetics between Cu, Cu +, and Cu2+ are based on the dissolution mechanism of copper. There exists four different models to describe the dissolution of pure copper. The classical model of Mattsson and Bockris [27] involves two single electron transfers with the cuprous-cupric reaction being the rate detennining step. More recently, Wong, Collier, and MacFarlane [28] used ac impedance to elucidate a more complex mechanism involving the affect of pH and anions. Their findings indicate that the formation of cuprous ions in solution, Cu(I)so~ is favored over Cu(1I) ions adsorbed to the electrode surface in the presence of sulfate and as pH increases from pH 1 to pH 5."

Laser surface alloying was used to develop copper and molybdenum aluminides by injecting premixed copper and molybdenum powder particles into a laser-generated melt pool on an aluminium substrate. Different laser processing parameters were used to produce the composite thin layers on the substrate material. The microstructure and phase constituents of the composite layer were studied by means of scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) techniques. Experimental results show that the matrix structure of the metal matrix composite layer consists of ?-CuAl2and MoAl5. Surface hardness was increased by a factor of 3.

The Pan American Mine, in southeastern Nevada, is about 26 miles west southwest of Pioche, Nevada, and about 266 miles southwest of Salt Lake City, Utah. The mine is located in the Comet Mining District, and since the ore occurrence is generally the same in the Comet and well known adjacent Pioche Mining Districts, the history of the two shall be considered the same. The Pioche District began about 1869 with the production of high grade gold and silver from fissure veins in the Cambrian Prospect Mountain quartzite. Peak production was reached in 1872 and then declined with sporadic production until 1924, when Combined Metals Reduction Co. shipped its first, complex sulphide ores mined from the CM bed at Pioche. Extensive ore bodies in this CM bed attracted interest in the same bed in the Comet District. Small pockets of high grade silver-lead were mined from fissures cutting the CM and other limestone beds above. Exploration in the CM beds at this time proved a large area of mineralization too low grade to be considered ore.

In this paper a genetic algorithm is used in a heavily jointed rock mass in order to investigate the critical circular slip surface and modification of slope surface. This method was applied to the southern wall of the 6th Golbini Jajarm bauxite mine. The mine is the largest bauxite deposit in Iran, located to the northeast of the town of Jajarm in the Khorasan province. Estimated reserve of bauxite in this deposit is about 160 million tonnes. Field and laboratory investigations were conducted in order to determine rock mass behaviour. A genetic algorithm code that uses the Simplified Bishop method as an objective function was developed for findingt he safety factor of circular slip surfaces. Sensitivity analysis was applied to determine the optimum values of the genetic algorithm variables, such as population size, selection method, crossover and mutation rates. After finding the critical circular slip surface, slope modification is carried out by removing unstable sections from marked critical slip surfaces, and this process is repeated until the last unsafe section is removed. Based on this code, modification occurred during 7 steps, by reaching a safety factor of 1.3 in the last step. Finally, the modified slope angle of the southern wall of the 6th Golbini Jajarm bauxite mine was determined to be 48.44 degrees. Dr. Babcock—You have l x 10-4 as the component for the lime and 1 or 4x10-. Now, is it by dividing one into the other you get the 400? That is assuming equivalent activity on the part of oxygen, sulphur, and magnesia. Dr. Chipman—Yes, they are calculated for 1600. Now, the first one for CaO was calculated before we had a glimpse of Dr. Rosenqvist's paper." If you take his calculation you get 14,000 cal which is very good agreement, but our calculation would be superseded by Dr. Rosenqvist's new data. Dr. Babcock—The state you assume those to be in is the liquid state, as near as you can measure? Dr. Chipman—Naturally it is based on the solid CaS, but if you add the effect of fusion on both sides it just about balances out, so the ratio would be about the same. B. M. Larsen (U. S. Steel Co., Kearny, N. J.)—If we knew the activity of sulphur in the slag instead of merely the percentage, we might be able to find some conflicting factors that balance one another out, and find that the FeO or oxygen pressure effect is really present over the whole range. Dr. Chipman—I am fairly sure we would. The activity of sulphur in the slag and the activity of CaO in the slag, if we just knew those quantities, would enable us to save a lot of this computation and assumption and all the approximations we are doing now. Mr. Larsen—Two other points perhaps should be included: 1—an independent effect of manganese in helping the desulphurization; and 2—the number of mols of constituents or number of mols of ions or whatever there is in the slag could vary with these compositions in such a way that you get dilution effects. Dr. Chipman—You can figure all that in if you want to and it might improve the degree of approximation a little bit. Maybe enough to justify the labor of calculation, inaybe not, but we did not do it. L. S. Darken (U. S. Steel Co., Kearny, N. The use of radio signals for underground communications was considered as early as the mid-1920's [1] - [4] . However, early experiments did not produce promising results with the type of equipment that was available then [5] . With advancements in solid state technology many of the schemes considered impractical in the early days suddenly became practical. The properties of electromagnetic wave behavior in conducting media have been intensively studied by Wait [ 6] and others and can be utilized not only in communication with trapped miners, but also as a means of locating their position. This report deals with the development of portable electromagnetic equipment, powered by the miner's conventional lamp battery, which can be used to alert surface rescue personnel of the trapped miner Is location. The Westinghouse Georesearch Laboratory (WGL) under BUMINES sponsors hip initially approached the trapped miner location problem using seismic techniques. It was learned from this effort that two serious shortcomings of seismic techniques are (1) the extremely weak signals available on the surface from miner generated hammer blows, requiring long processing times at the surface receiver, and (2) the relatively slow procedure of deploying geophone arrays to sense the seismic uplink signals. By contrast, the electromagnetic techniques have proven much more practical from a deployment time standpoint and in most cases have also proven to be more accurate in determining location. Furthermore, these techniques have been successfully tested using a receiver in a heli- copter for reconnaissance purposes. However, before any electromagnetic location technique can become fully operational, the miners themselves must be equipped with emergency transmitters to be carried with them on each work shift. Consequently, much emphasis has been placed on the development of extremely lightweight transmitting equipment. The performance of some of the electromagnetic location equipment developed by Westinghouse will be described in the following sections. 2.0 Basic Concepts Theoretical concepts for locating magnetic dipoles in the earth have been treated by Wait [ 7] and Olsen [ 8] . Several processes being developed by the Federal Bureau of Mines to provide new and more efficient uses for coal require practical methods for removing dust from hot gases. Filters provide such means. The efficiency of filters made of aluminum silicate fibers and porous stainless steel was determined. The results obtained with the fibers were previously reported.5 In this investigation tests were made with three porosities of stainless steel filter material (grades C, D, and E) at a gas flow of 1,000 std. c.f.h./sq. ft. of filter, temperatures of 75° and 1,000° F., and dust loadings (as represented by cumulative dust fed) of 100, 1,000, and 10,000 gr./sq. ft. of filter. Pressure drop during the runs ranged from 0.1 to 21 in. of mercury, and dust removal from 25 to 99.93 pct. Filters having the finest pores gave the greatest pressure drop and percentage of dust removal; however, their dust-holding capacity was slightly lower. Usually, their ability to remove a higher percentage of dust at the same pressure drop more than compensated for the slightly lower dust-holding capacity. With increase in temperature, for the same weight rate of flow of gas, the pressure drop increased and the percentage of dust removal decreased. The effect of temperature was probably due to the accompanying change in the linear velocity and viscosity of the gas.

La extracción del mineral es el método más habitual para la explotación minera y se realiza a través de rampas, galerías, y túneles que permitan el acceso hasta la zona de minado. Sin embargo, cuando se da una excesiva profundizaciión del terreno, se emplea el método de pique vertical ya que logra el acceso de los operarios a las zonas más profundas de un modo más rentable y rápido a través de la extracción del mineral por izado de vagones o skip hasta el de nivel de superficie o intermedio. Por ello, es común que las minas replanteen la sustitución de su sistema de extracción habitual por el de izado por piques. En este sentido, el presente trabajo desarrolla la aplicación de los piques verticales en los sondeos de exploracion de la mina Hullera Vasco Leonesa. La primera parte del proyecto describe la ejecución de dos piques verticales (Aurelio y Emilio del Valle), y la segunda, en la ejecución de más de 17.000 m de galerías y obras de infraestructura de diversa índole.

ABSTRACT A significant factor in evaluating bitumen recovery from an oil sands mine is the particle size distribution (PSD). Increased understanding of mined ore quality and improvement in predictions of recovery can be achieved through PSD modeling. This paper addresses PSD modeling using geostatistics. PSDs may be described using many discrete particle sizes, making this a challenge. The approach parameterizes PSDs with a few statistics. A lookup table is used to reconstruct the PSDs based on models of the statistics. The workflow is applied to Total E&P Canada’s Joslyn Lease and yields good results that reproduce input statistics without introducing artifacts.

It is currently recognized by mining society that autonomously guided underground mining vehicles may greatly increase the efficiency of mining production and improve human safety. Recent results in mobile robotics, data fusion and sensor development provide a solid basis for solving the problems related to autonomous underground navigation. Recently developed commercial systems mostly rely on the infrastructure that is expensive and difficult to maintain. Guideless navigation in unstructured and harsh environment of underground mines is still a challenging task. In this paper, we describe an autonomous navigation system for an underground mining vehicle equipped with on-board dead reckoning, inertial and optical sensors. This system does not require any artificial infrastructure and is capable to guide the vehicle along the complex environment of interconnected underground drifts; it also ensures the detection of obstacles on the vehicle path. The user interface for monitoring and control is described and the results of laboratory tests and on-site experiments are presented. Work in progress addresses the system integration for real equipment, and the system upgrade, adding map-building and selflocalization capabilities .

Introduction Air conditioning is a term which has come into common use only during our generation. By definition, it means the positive and accurate control of temperature, humidity, movement, purity, and component constituents of the atmosphere within an enclosure. Claiming such results for Noranda's ventilation system, or for that of any other large mine, at present would be an idle boast. However, we are working toward that end with considerable success. Modern underground ventilation at Noranda dates back about six years. The later development of air conditioning is in its fourth season, but still in the experimental stage. Various ingenious methods have been devised to cool mines which, because of climatic or geological conditions or depth, are excessively warm. A few installations have been made to warm intake air during the winter months where this is necessary. However, the method currently in use at Noranda is unique in that it accomplishes both ends by one process. This method utilizes the freezing and melting of ice to equalize year-round temperatures. Mining Methods While a discussion of mining methods at Noranda is not proposed in this paper, a brief summary may be in order. The Horne mine of Noranda Mines, Limited, has been developed by six shafts, four of which are now active. The most recent, an internal shaft, extends to 6,000 feet below surface, but all of the ore mined to date has come from above the 3,000-foot level. Figure 1 shows a model of principal ore bodies. The area mined is relatively small in plan, considering its vertical extent and the tonnage per vertical foot. Most of the ore lies within an ellipse about 600 by 1,000 feet. While this has certain advantages, the mining of such massive orebodies has presented many problems.

Measurements of the solubility of lead in liquid iron were made at 1550°, 1600°, 1650°, and 1700°C using two different methods, i.e., 1) liquid iron-liquid lead equilibration and 2) liquid iron-lead vapor equilibration. LEAD was long considered insoluble in liquid iron1. Today steels containing 0.15 to 0.35 pct Pb are used. One laboratory has found a solubility of about 0.5 pet in the 1600°C range. The San Luis deposit of Costilla county, Colorado contained 11,021,000 tonnes (12,149,000 tons) of ore at 1.4 g/t (0.040 oz/st) gold in two minable zones. Gold mineralization is associated with silicification and quartz-sericite-pyrite alteration localized in breccias along a low-angle detachment fault zone in Precambrian gneiss. Gangue minerals include chlorite, specular hematite, chalcopyrite, chalcocite, and fluorite. Mineralization is mid-Tertiary in age and has a direct genetic relation to the emplacement of felsic intrusions. Portions of the ore body are unconformably overlain by sedimentary rocks of the Tertiary Santa Fe Formation. The deposit formed during the early stages of extensional tectonism along the eastern edge of the present day Rio Grande rift.

Bituminous coal has for many years been used for the smelting of iron-ores in the blast-furnace. In some districts in Scotland it is used alone, in others it is used mixed with coke. The similar use of certain bituminous coals in the United States has been repeatedly mentioned in the Transactions. (See, for instance, as to the Hocking Valley coal, the papers of Dr. T. Sterry Hunt, Trans., ii., 275, and vii., 313; and as to Indiana "block-coal," the paper of Mr. J. S. Alexander, Trans., i., 225.)
