"The rise of autonomous haul truck fleets may have been initially driven by the rapid escalation of the cost of equipment operators, but the actual improvements reported by the major iron ore miners far exceeds the simple reduction in workforce. Utilising cost models developed for feasibility studies and mining contract modelling, the limits of cost improvements due to simple labour reductions are compared to those achieved by the early autonomous fleet adopters and through traditional process improvement techniques such as fleet class upgrades or hot-seating of equipment. As autonomous fleet implementation matures, it is likely that the gains seen by current adopters will seem minor compared to the limits generally governed by the limit of equipment utilisation. This ultimate limit is explored through time utilisation models, which were also developed for use in feasibility studies and mining contract modelling.Citation:Miller, B H and Price, R, 2016. THERE have been numerous papers in the literature1 on the subjects of secondary and tertiary recrystalli-zation in silicon steels. Secondary re crystallization is believed to occur in silicon steel by either a surface-energy phenomenon such as in the usual development of cube texture or by a second-phase phenomenon such as in the usual production of cube-on-edge texture, (110)[001]. Tertiary recrystallization in silicon steel is thought to be a surface-energy phenomenon in which, for example, grains having a (110) plane parallel to the sheet grow at the expense of other grains in the matrix including those having a (100) plane parallel to the plane of the sheet. In all these instances, the orientations involve either a preferred (100) or (110) plane in the plane of the sheet. Until very recently, there had been no experimental evidence reported of the occurrence of a texture by secondary or tertiary recrystallization that involves a (111) plane in the plane of the sheet, although Kohler reported that grains having the (111) plane parallel to the sheet surface can also grow by a surface energy mechanism. Stickels observed a secondary texture in iron described as "near {554}(225)" about 5 deg from {lll}(211).3 Mee reported that in a vacuum-remelted commercial 3 pct Si steel {lll}(hkl) secondary recrystallization took place in a high vacuum and in pure hydrogen.4 Recently in our Laboratory, large-grained structures such as shown in Fig. 1 having an orientation near (111)[211] or (111)[2ii] have been observed. The arrows point to areas of relatively small matrix grains of the kind that the much larger (111) grains consumed while growing. It is of interest that the matrix grains of samples annealed at 2000°F were essentially the same size as those in samples annealed at 2200°F, a matrix-grain-size stability that is characteristic of secondary recrystallization processes. A torque disc taken from Grain 4 of the sample shown in Fig. 1 revealed a very flat magnetic-torque curve, as expected, with a maximum torque of 7000 dyne-cm per cu cm compared to the typical 180,000 dyne-cm per cu cm observed for conventional (110)[001] textured material. A back-reflection Laue pattern for Grain 4 is shown in Fig. 2 and indicates a near-perfect (111)[211] orientation. The other six numbered grains in the sample of Fig. 1 had a similar orientation. The small circles next to each number were the target areas for the X-ray beam. The starting material was an 0.011-in.-thick oriented silicon steel, (110)[001] texture, containing 3 pct Si. It was lightly pickled, cold-rolled to 0.005 in., and annealed 4 hr at 2200°F within a nickel box (not gas-tight) inside a tube furnace through which dry hydrogen was flowing. THE firing of explosive charges by electricity dates back to 1745 when a Doctor Watson is said to have used an electric spark for igniting gunpowder. His method failed in practical application because, to ignite blasting powder, heat must be applied for a period longer than the duration of an electrostatic spark; Wheatstone found that this does not exceed 14000 sec. The usual result, therefore, of an electrical discharge in gunpowder is to scatter the grains, without igniting them. Benjamin Franklin partly overcame this difficulty by confining the powder and crushing grains that lay in the line of discharge. In 1822, after the primary cell had been discovered by Volta, Robert Hare, professor of chemistry at the University of Philadelphia, noticed the heating of a short piece of wire placed in the circuit of a voltaic battery. Later work by Oersted, Faraday, Wheatstone, and Henley resulted in the development of the magneto blasting machines. Fulminates of gold and silver are thought to have been discovered by Cornelius Drebbel, about 1600. Pepys, in his diary for November 11, 1663, recounts a conversation with Doctor Allen, who told him about aurium fulminans "of which a grain ... . put in a silver spoon and fired, will give a blow like a musquett and strike a hole through the silver spoon downward, without the least force upward.1," This fallacious belief that explosives act downwards only, is still held by many who should know better. The identification and-develop¬ment of new construction aggregate resources, the most common mineral mined, is an essential need in this country's growing urban areas. In developing an aggregate exploration program, a thorough geological identification of all potential aggregate resources in an area is still of primary importance but other factors have also to be considered. These include physical properties, end product application, transportation and mining costs, and local government regulations including zoning. The present major aggregate producers are most likely to develop these future resources and are in the best position to initiate comprehensive exploration programs.

The structure of eutectics has been studied by a number of investigators, and the complexity of the structural relationship of the components has been agreed upon, especially that of the "eutectic colony," type III of Portevin's1 classification. This paper does not attempt to alter the present classifications of eutectics; rather, it discusses the relationship between the macrostructure and the microstructure of the copper-cuprous oxide eutectic, and describes in detail the mechanism of the formation and the structure of the eutectic. Further, throughout the entire discussion it attempts to point out certain misconceptions in regard to the interpretation of the observed structure of the copper-cuprous oxide eutectic, one of the so-called "eutectic colony" types, and to correlate as much as possible the work done by the writer with that done by other investigators. Of the three types of eutectics listed by Portevin,2 the eutectic colony type has presented the greatest difficulty in interpretation. Although the copper-cuprous oxide eutectic is typical of the eutectic colony type in appearance, it may not be truly representative because the copper forms about 96 per cent of the eutectic and the cuprous oxide about 4 per cent. The interpretation of the origin and structure of the "eutectic colony" given here is strictly limited, therefore, to the copper-cuprous oxide eutectic. Macrostructure Fig. 1 shows the macrostructure of the eutectic at 3 diameters, the melt having been chill-cast into an iron mold, the resulting specimen sawed into two parts and the section polished and etched with the usual mixture of hydrogen peroxide and ammonium hydroxide. This specimen contains 0.48 per cent oxygen and is only slightly hypereutectic. If such a melt is allowed to cool slowly, large macrograins will form without the columnar structure of Fig. 1 and the well-known phenomenon of liquation will occur, forming copper oxide dendrites at the top and copper

In open pit blasting, energy is released and transmitted through the geology. Negative effects can impact operations and can affect mine production. This paper presents recommendations for blast design to prevent damage due to ground motion from blasting on adjacent concrete structures of underground operations. It includes a case study describing a problem regarding an open pit mine expansion and asks whether production blasting will damage concrete shaft structures due to blast stress waves and blast-induced ground motion.

A survey of the interactions of large gas bubbles formed from top and bottom injection of gases into melts was carried out. Spherical cap bubbles were found not to produce much splash when they break through the bath free surface except for that formed by plunging of the-spout at its edges. In contrast, the bursting of balloons produces cavities which give rise to liquid jets being ejected from the bath free surface. The position of the balloons relative to the bath free surface is an important parameter in the formation of the liquid jet. It is found that the interactions of multiple bubbles close to the free surface is important in determining the splash behaviour of gas injected systems.

The Ashanti mine, located in Obusai, Ghana, West Africa, has been in production for over 100 years, and is currently the second largest single gold producer in Africa. The mine covers a concession area of 434 square kilometers with four main ore types: the quartz vein type, disseminated sulphide type, supergene sulphides and transition ore, and granitoids stock works (visible gold and quartz veinlets). Various mining strategies and methods have been employed for the mining of the narrow-vein ore at Ashanti. In recent years, the mine owner: Ashanti Goldfields Company Ltd. has embarked on a mine-wide expansion program to boost production to a target of one million ounces per annum. With the rapid depletion of its high-grade ore, a suitable mining method was required to produce a high tonnage at low cost to meet production objectives. This paper discusses how the Ashanti mine applied Canada experiences in mining technology to boost production, and the impact that the differing geological settings between the two countries had on the stope performance at the Ashanti operations. Experience developed at the Ashanti mine led to innovative modifications for stope layout and design methods in relatively poor ground conditions.

This paper will deal with the type of rocks so called evaporites, which are sedimentary rocks produced by water evaporation from seas, lakes or marginal lagoons, in warm and arid climates. Salts derived from these deposits are precipitated according to their solubility; that is, the more soluble precipitates first, overlain by other sediments like silts, shales, limestones, sands, etc. The most common evaporites, according to their chemical composition, are : Chlorides Sulphates Carbonates Nitrates Borates Common salt, or halite, sulphates like anhydrite and gypsum, are the most important. Potassium chloride (silvite and carnalite) and potassium sulphate are of great commercial value.

The FeNi technology is currently dominated by high-power submerged arc furnaces, often designed as smelter as "two-inline-solution". To achieve the intended high efficiency, state-of-the-art design in good correlation with ores and reductants and an integrated layout of the whole plant is of great importance. An introduction will be given to general aspects in the production FeNi, plus a detailed overview of design principles for large FeNi smelters and finally some examples of innovations and research projects concerning Fe-Ni.

Despite the controversies that have surrounded asbestos over the past 20 to 30 years, no knowledgeable authority has doubted the usefulness of this material. Were it not for the health risks associated with the manufacture and use of asbestos products, its physical and chemical characteristics would continue to be hailed as an undeniable boon to mankind. However, it has become clear over the past 30 years that like other major contributors to our modern industrialized society, asbestos must be handled responsibly and with the full understanding that lack of care can lead to injury, suffering and death. In this sense, asbestos shares characteristics with nuclear power, pesticides and even motor vehicle usage. It is unlikely that modern society would be willing to walk away from the benefits bestowed by any of these valuable resources. Rather, the appropriate response to the identification of danger is to define the type of risk, quantify its incidence, search for methods of decreasing the risk and implement programs to achieve the goal of minimization of risk. We should recognize at the outset that the risk cannot be diminished to zero without elimination of the material entirely from our midst. The concept of acceptable risk is a complex issue involving medical, legal, financial, moral and even psychological factors that defy precise quantification. In essence, the major danger produced by exposure to asbestos is its potential effects on the respiratory system. Despite the fact that asbestos workers have constant skin contact with the material and porbably swallow it in the course of their activities, inhalation of the fibers is recognized as the major health risk associated with its use. Aerosols of asbestos are inhaled not only by miners, millers and fabricators but also by urban dwellers who have no direct occupational contact with the material. This occurs because asbestos has been applied to our buildings and has been used in a wide variety of products that touch our daily lives. While it is estimated that three to four million people in the United States have been occupationally exposed to asbestos, the number who have been non-occupationally exposed is many times that number.

For hot mines, the use of mechanical refrigeration machines has become an essential feature of ventilation and cooling systems. Over the last 30 years, considerable effort has been made in developing refrigeration strategies and equipment to provide cooling that is cost-effective, reliable and energy efficient. In addition to these general design requirements it is necessary to take into account project specific factors such as long term mine cooling needs, operating strategy and installation time. This paper examines a number of actual mine cooling installations which illustrate how these features have influenced the design and installations. For many mines, it is known how the cooling requirements will increase as the mine develops, based on the life of mine plan. The design of the cooling installation must cater for both short- and long-term needs. The initial installation (to meet short-term requirements) must form an integral part of the ultimate cooling installation and as additional equipment and refrigeration machines are installed, it is necessary to ensure that the system remains cost-effective, reliable and energy efficient at all stages. For many mines, refrigeration machines are installed on surface and either operated near-continuously, or for the summer months only. Different maintenance strategies and policies with regard to standby equipment are highlighted for three mine installations. In spite of developments in cooling strategy, the cost of providing refrigeration remains expensive and many mines delay the introduction of refrigeration, as long as possible. When it is finally accepted that refrigeration is absolutely necessary, it is frequently necessary to æfast trackÆ the installation. To minimise site erection time and meet installation deadlines, factory pre-assembly and standardised modular equipment are widely used.

The enormous deposits of greensand in New Jersey and elsewhere in the United States, many of them close to important octant industrial centers, constitute a perpetual challenge for research chemists to convert them into a commercial asset of national importance. Following the introduction of more concentrated fertilizers, comprising synthetic mixtures of more soluble salts, the quantity of greensand used directly upon the soil has diminished, but deposits of such material still have at least potential value locally for use not only as fertilizer but also as a water softener. An annotated bibliography of the already extensive Literature on greensand, virtually complete to about the end of 1929, has been issued by the Bureau of Mines3/, and the commercial aspects as well as the technology of greensand utilization are discussed in available publications, The purpose of the present circular, therefore, is merely to provide a brief outline of certain general essential considerations for use in appraising the potential value of a greensand deposit in any given locality.

Land management planning is an important issue in all jurisdictions, especially as it relates to mineral development. These planning documents are prepared at different intervals and reflect the realities at the time that they were prepared. The Seven Questions to Sustainability developed during the North American Process of the Mining, Minerals and Sustainable Development (MMSD) project are proposed for the evaluation of Land Use Plans as they relate to Mineral Development. This paper provides the background to the Seven Questions to Sustainability and how it can be applied to the evaluation of land use plans with specific reference to Resource Management Plans developed by the U. S. Department of the Interior?s Bureau of Land Management in Nevada. While this paper is focused on Nevada, the approach is broadly applicable and may be used in other planning regimes.

Roadheaders, also called Boom Miners or Boom-type Tunneling Machines have been in North America since 1968, when first introduced by Willy Kogelmann, the founder of Alpine Equipment Corp. (?Alpine?). Roadheaders were invented in Europe in the late 1940s. Machines with in-line, axial cutter heads were developed in the former Soviet Union. The British Dosco DRCL is based on the Russian PK-3 roadheader. Roadheaders with transverse ?ripper? cutter heads were invented in Hungary (1). The Austrian-made Alpine Miners of VOEST-Alpine, purchased by Sandvik AB, are based on a 1965 Hungarian license. Roadheaders are widely used in the mining and tunneling industries because they can excavate drifts, entries and tunnels with cross sections of any shape and size, can handle mixed faces, work on steep grades, and negotiate tight curves and cross-cuts. A roadheader?s only major limitation is the strength and abrasiveness of rock and minerals to be excavated. This paper covers roadheader selection criteria, improvements in reliability, attachments for flexibility (Multi-Tool Miner), and automated support systems for increased cutting time for increased shift production.

In hybrid foundation system or piled raft foundation (PRF), the raft has adequate bearing capacity and piles are usually required to ensure overall stability of foundation and also to act as settlement reducer for high rise structures. When piles are connected to the raft, a high axial stress may develop and one alternative is to disconnect the piles from raft and consider them as stiffeners for supporting soil. This system is known as disconnected piled raft foundation (DCPRF). Cushion, a compacted coarse grained soil layer, can be used beneath the raft to redistribute and adjust the stress ratio of piles to subsoil and plays an important role in mobilizing the bearing capacity of subsoil and modifying the load transfer mechanism of piles. In this study, finite element method (FEM) has been employed to investigate the effect of different parameters such as cushion stiffness, gap height, raft thickness and piling configuration on the behavior of disconnected piled raft foundation. The analysis is performed on different foundations of hypothetical and real case histories. Results indicate that increasing the raft thickness reduces the differential settlement and pile head axial stress. Concentrating the longer disconnected piles similar to connected ones beneath the central area of raft, decreases settlement of raft. With increasing cushion stiffness, vertical stress ratio of piles to subsoil increases, but settlement decreases. Increasing gap height from 0.1 m to 1 m decreases the vertical stress ratio of piles to subsoil.

Para comprender la necesidad del cobre en Chile, es necesario conocer el significado del mineral en la formación socio-política de dicho país. Por ello, el presente trabajo refiere la importancia de producción cuprífera en la economía del país sureño a través de la implementación de un programa basado no solo en el aumento de producción del mineral, sino en la participación del Estado y de la integración de la industria. Asimismo, se realizaron tres programas que complementen esta política de desarrollo. El primero, buscó la expansión del mineral y su inversión, el segundo, se basaba en la implicancia del Estado en la propiedad de las empresas productora y el tercero estriba en la integración de la industria del cobre a la minería nacional y así generar una mejor calidad del mineral mismo. Paralelamente a estos programas se desarrollaron programas de expansión de la pequeña y gran minería, asi como reforzar los patrones de chilenización a la nacionalización en la minería.

In the UK a high proportion of land-won sand and gravel is extracted from sub-alluvial gravels and river terrace gravels located within river valleys. However, extraction from deposits of this type is increasingly proving to be less acceptable. Quarries within river valleys often have a high visual impact and the cumulative impact of these operations in close proximity to each other can be high (figure 1). River valley operations are almost always restored to open water. Whilst these may be attractive for nature conservation and provide leisure activities, they can also have a serious impact on the natural hydrology of the flood plain. Wet restoration of quarries located close to airports or airfields can also lead to concerns regarding increased risk of bird strike on aircraft. The Civil Aviation Authority recently suggested that an exclusion zone of 13 km be applied around all airports and airfields to reduce the potential for bird strikes on aircraft. This action is likely to have a serious impact on the availability of potential sand and gravel extraction sites in river valleys.

THE annual meeting of the Arizona Section was held at the Pioneer Hotel in Tucson on Dec. 10, 1951. Registration and ticket sales for the social functions started at 8:00 am and lasted throughout most of the day. There were 489 registrations, consisting of 216 members, 64 students, and 209 guests. Chairman Harrison Schmitt opened the Mining Geology Div. meeting and a short business session was held at which Dr. Charles Anderson of Prescott, Ariz. was elected chairman and Seton Williams of Tucson was elected secretary for 1952. Dr. B. S. Butler was program chairman with R. B. Mulchay as co-chairman at the technical program. Eldred Wilson spoke on Oxidation and Water Levels at Some Arizona Mines. George Kiersch spoke about Economic and Engineering Significance of Ground Water Localization in Limestones - Big Bend Country, Texas. Harrison Schmitt gave The Definition and Use of Terms in Mining Geology. These talks were followed by discussions. E. N. Pennebaker, A. D. Wandke, and H. Schmitt gave informal talks on foreign trips made during 1951, the meeting was then adjourned.
