An investigation was conducted to evaluate the use of a formcoke as the total fuel in the Bureau of Mines experimental blast furnace. The formcoke performed very satisfactorily, and comparisons made with a metallurgical coke showed that the performance with the formcoke was somewhat superior under the experimental conditions used.

Organization In 1948, the Committee on Divisionalization and Publication Program of AIME, known as the Johnson Committee, recommended the reorganization of the Institute into three branches, Mining, Metals and Petroleum. This recommendation was accepted and the new organizational structure was implemented in Jan., 1949. The Mining Branch, at the time of the formation, had three divisions: the Coal Division formed in 1929, the Industrial Minerals Division (IndMD) dating from 1935, and the Minerals Beneficiation Division (MBD) formed in 1948 from the Milling Methods Committee, which had existed for many years. There did not exist, however, a division for the geologists and mining engineers. From the time of the founding of the Institute, this group was the main stem of AIME and never felt the need to segregate. The disciplines of mining and geology were served by a number of technical standing committees of AIME. With the birth of the new Branch, a new Division, the Mining, Geology and Geophysics Division (MGGD) was formed, completing the divisional structure of the Mining Branch and providing a home for all members. The governing body was the Mining Branch Council, with two members from each Division of the Mining Branch and one each from the Mineral Industry Education Division and the Mineral Economics Division. These last two divisions served all three Branches of AIME. The Division is such an important unit in the organization structure that it is of value to explain that it appoints committees to handle pro- grams, publications, and awards - representing the main functions of the Institute - as well as many others. There is enough flexibility in the organization so that each Division may have its own special committee structure as long as primary functions are provided. The past is indeed prologue to the future, for in 1957 the Johnson "Branches" gave way to the Fletcher "Societies." The Fletcher Committee, in 1958, recommended a new reorganization into Societies, each with the authority to administer its own finances and to designate certain officers and directors to the AIME Board. Data are presented on the effect of iron oxide on the electrical conductivity of CaO-SiO2-FeO-Fe2O3melts, and on limiting current and impedance in direct current or alternating current charge transfer at iron electrodes. The strong influence of iron oxide content can be utilized for in situ determination of total iron oxide content and Fe3+/Fe2+ratio. The possible probe designs are presented and the principles and procedures of the measurements are explained. Tailings from the Pea Ridge iron mine contain significant amounts of apatite, which has rare-earth element values associated with it. In association with the recovery of rare-earth minerals as a secondary resource, the U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted an investigation on the recover ability of the rare-earth minerals from these tailings. The mill tailings were subjected to a phosphate flotation to separate the apatite from other constituents. More than 70-pct recovery of the rare-earth values was achieved. Based on mineralogical characterization and prior analysis of rare-earth-bearing breccia pipe material at Pea Ridge, it is proposed that processing this phosphate concentrate on a vanner table would yield up to a 95-pct recovery of the rare earths in the concentrate, with the apatite reporting to the tailings. Intensive ore microscopy studies of the original tailings to the flotation products led to the identification of monazite, xenotime, and rare-earth-enriched apatite as the major rare-earth-bearing minerals in the tailings.

The management of The Union Pacific Coal Co., which operates a group of coal mines in Southern Wyoming, believes in the value of applied psychology as a productive factor in the work of getting out coal. Operating almost wholly through the medium of mechanical loading machinery, the company has for some years paid a bonus, equivalent to one-half the labor saving made above a determined average output per shift worked, on a given machine. No penalty is attached where the established output is not obtained, but in 1933 the men on one class of machines earned an average premium of $0.633 per shift on 56.4 per cent of the tonnage loaded. On another class of machine, the men earned an average premium of $0.686 per shift on 28.4 per cent of the tonnage loaded An increase of 36 per cent in tons loaded per man-shift has resulted since the program was instituted. This coal company has also been very successful in reducing mine accidents through prizes awarded in an unusual way. At the close of the year, every man whose particular mine section passes through the year without a lost-time accident is given a ticket entitling him to participate in a safety drawing where an automobile is awarded as first prim.. There are also a number of cash safety prizes which are similarly awarded. Some 1500 persons attend the drawing, which excites much interest and attention. The particular plan employed, the payment of production bonus awards and safety prizes, is foundationed upon collective. rather than individual effort, and, once gotten under way, has proved to be substantlally self-cnforcing.

As a minerals company, obtaining the appropriate consents under the Resource Management Act 1991 and getting permits granted for exploring, prospecting and mining under the Crown Minerals Act 1991, is necessary for actively exploring and mining in New Zealand. But the essential mix of ingredients for a viable and healthy Industry go way beyond this.   In the short term, an individual company seeking to operate on or within the Crown minerals estate of New Zealand must chart a course through the requirements raised by new cornerstone legislation, the Resource Management Act, the Crown Minerals Act and, the Conservation Act 1978 (where the minerals sought coincide with this estate).   However, this paper suggests that in the longer term for individual operators within the Industry and for the Industry at large to remain viable and sustainable and for New Zealanders to continue to enjoy its benefits, much more is required. Not least of which is a better balancing of competing uses and attitudes, which will require an opening of minds, a change in mindset, topped off with those two most essential of ingredients advocacy and leadership.   New Zealand has undergone massive restructuring in the last 15 years. Is it complete? Have each of its fronts evolved to the end point which was envisaged by the designers of the regime? What are the advantages? What is left to be done? What are the impediments from an incomplete transition which are left to either dog the Industry or remain as a challenge to be removed to ensure the Industry's smooth sailing into a prosperous and environmentally clean and friendly future? A future wherein an educated and understanding public welcome and are proud of the Minerals Industry to whom they owe the standard of living which they enjoy.   This presentation will examine the role of the New Zealand Minerals Industry Association (NZMIA) in paving the way for an optimum operating environment in which to couch a healthy industry into the future.

This report describes the application of pulsed magnetic fields derived from alternating and intermittent magnetizing currents. Application of such pulsed magnetic fields to the matrix-type separator permits (1) the complete discharge of the magnetic fraction with wet feeds and (2) the dry separation at particle sizes down to 325 mesh. At smaller particle s indications are that frequencies above 60 hertz will be required. Applications of intermittent magnetizing current to the cross-belt separator give the cross-belt-separator an advantage over the conventional constant-field cross-belt and induced roll separators; the intermittent current enables the cross-belt separator to separate matted fibrous and magnetically coagulating feeds, a type of feed that occasionally occurs with mineral, industrial, and secondary materials.

DURING the past year, the intense interest shown by the metallurgical industry in the use of relatively pure oxygen has been evidenced by the number of papers dealing with its application and production. The reason for this interest is apparent when it is realized that, weight for weight, oxygen enters into the formation of steel equally with iron. In the manufacture of steel, approximately one ton of oxygen is required to produce one ton of ingots. Until the recent development of plants capable of producing oxygen at far lower costs than had ever previously been considered possible, the oxygen required for steel manufacture was used as it occurs in air, where it is associated with approximately four times its volume of nitrogen. Because of the diluent nitrogen more than 4 tons of total gaseous material per ton of steel must be handled rather than only approximately one ton required when pure oxygen is used. In addition, provision must be made to handle the large quantity of waste, gases resulting from the process. There are cases where the reduction in gas volume alone can justify the installation of an oxygen plant.

Reserve estimation is a process that commences with sampling and culminates in the issuance of a reserve statement. The tin, gold and diamonds that occur as marine placers on the continental shelf are low grade with very erratic mineral distributions. Sampling, using a variety of special equipment, determines the extent and grade of the mineralization. The sample size is important, especially for diamonds. Together with the sampling density, it determines the accuracy of the grade estimate. Bulk sampling is a confirmatory process. The choice of mining equipment, either new or developed from onshore activities, dictates the unit costs, the cutoff grades and the selectivity of extraction. Thus, the size of the blocks that comprise the mining plan and the reserves are determined. A variety of estimation methods of different reliability are available, with the most sophisticated being kriging. Dilution and losses during mining must be taken into account in estimation, and a grade-volume curve should be constructed. Diamond deposit estimation also involves an extra variable, the dollar value of the stones. During and after mining, essential feedback on the accuracy of un estimation may be given by the RIE factor and by a mineral balance. Reserve estimates are required for several reasons and may be subject to public disclosure. The use of the correct definitions is, therefore, important.

The Bureau of Mines conducted a series of tests to determine how well the Bendix BDX 60, the Gilian HFS 113U, the MSA Fixt-Flo, and the Spectrex PAS-3000 dust sampling pumps control the flow rate at 2 L/min. These tests were performed because users need to know the performance characteristics of sampling pumps to select the pump that best satisfies their sampling requirements. Long-term (6- to 8-h) flow stability at various backpressures was examined in relation to the flow control tolerance of ±5% of the flow, the level imposed by Federal regulations; four of the five Bendix pumps did not meet the criterion for this test, which was passed by all other pumps tested. Flow control recovery times were measured at transient backpressures; all pumps evaluated met the criterion for this test. The low-flow indicators of the sampling pumps were tested; only two Bendix pumps and one Gilian pump met the criterion of indicating a flow change greater than ±5%. In the pulsation flow measurement test all of the pumps passed, with pulsating flows greater than 20 Hz. The Bureau also evaluated the manuals accompanying the sampling pumps. All were judged adequate except the Spectrex manual, which was judged poor.

The format has been selected and arranged to provide a condensed guide for safety personnel, inspection and investigative agencies, design and project engineers, and others responsible for the health and safety of workmen. All the precautionary measures recommended are based on actual conditions observed, from investigations of fatal or serious accidents, and from research conducted to find ways and means of alleviating hazards and unhealthful conditions. Many of the recommended rules are included in State laws and in the general safety requirements of the construction industry. Explanatory, descriptive, and qualifying information has been largely omitted in this publication to keep basic data in more useful and compact form. Included in the appendixes are special precautions for gassy (methane atmospheres) tunnels and tunnels where petroleum products are encountered.

The Ore Reserve/Exploration System implemented at Mount Isa for M.I.M. Holdings Limited is a comprehensive computer system designed to process assay, geological, structural and survey data input via special purpose logging sheets from daily activities at Isa Mine, Hilton Mine and various Carpentaria Exploration Company prospects. The system performs two basic functions; (1) data acquisition, validation and file maintenance to prepare the data for retrieval, and (2) generation of routine and optional reports. The types of reports available range from masterfile detail printouts and retrieval of data by key items to survey computations, structural analyses, cutoff calculations, statistical analyses and ore reserve calculations by the polygonal, inverse square or moving average techniques. The use of various optional reports available through the system is illustrated by several examples, and planned future development is discussed.

Most types of nuclear power reactors use uranium dioxide fuel. Power reactors using natural uranium dioxide'fuel are of special interest to countries such as Australia that have their own uranium supplies. A wide range of uranium dioxide powders can be fabricated and the ideal one flows readily, presses without the need for binders or lubricants, sinters to the required density and gives low reject rates at all fabrication stages. Sinterable uranium dioxide is usually produced via the ammonium diuranate route. The A.A.E.C. is aiming to demonstrate production of nuclear grade uranium dioxide from Australian concentrates, improving technology where possible. Details are given of the dissolution, solvent extraction, precipitation, filtration, drying, and calcination-reduction steps. Solvent extraction from sulphate media is also under study with a view to developing a process to produce a nuclear grade product at the mine treatment plant site,

COALS, other than anthracite, have been so thoroughly studied under the microscope during recent years, that we now know what kinds of plants and what parts of plants form the bulk of lower rank coals from peat to bituminous coal. The microscope has also shown the state of preservation of such vegetation as well as the nature and distribution of products of plant decay. These and further details have been ascertained mainly through the employment of two methods of attack, section cutting and maceration. Anthracite has failed to respond to these methods, so well adapted to the study of lower rank coals and, therefore, has been neglected by investigators to such an extent that there is much doubt as to its microscopical characteristics. The object of this paper is to lift anthracite from its realm of obscurity by demonstrating the wealth of microscopical detail that is revealed when reflected light is used on a properly polished and etched surface and, further, to show the relationship between anthracite and bituminous coal.

RITER, Salt Lake City, Utah.-We have every reason to believe that oil flotation Will soon come into general use as a final guard against slimes losses in concentrating mills, not only in the case of zinc ores, but also in the case of other semi-precious ores. It also promises much as a primary process for the concentration of minerals that are not adapted to gravity methods. Moreover, modifications of the process involving selective or preferential flotation are gradually becoming understood, and will make it possible to eliminate pyrite and other minerals occurring as undesirable impurities in zinc concentrates. And what perhaps is of equal importance, further modifications promise an effective method of separating zinc blende from ores that are chiefly valuable for copper, lead, anti precious metals, thereby making an asset out of zinc which has heretofore been a liability. The tendency of certain pulverized minerals to float on water, especially after having been in contact with grease, has been known to mill-men for a long time, and was formerly something to be deplored and to be striven against. All at once, this tendency has become a saving grace; and now, like tardy converts to a new faith, we are zealous advocates of something we once despised. I was once employed at a mine in the Tintic mining district of Utah¬the old Eureka Hill property-where ores that were too low in value to Warrant being sent to copper or lead smelters were treated in a combination mill. The ores contained gold, silver, lead, copper, zinc, manganese, arsenic, etc., in varying quantities and in varying mineral forms, mingled in a quartz and calcite gangue. The material was stamped fine and then concentrated on Frue vanners so as to make a smelting concentrate, after which the tailings were thickened and treated in amalgamating pans for the recovery of non-concentratable precious metals. In the amalgamating pans, under the influence of heat and agitation, a dark greasy froth or scum sometimes formed on the surface of the ore mixture. This froth or scum was composed mainly of mineral sulphides, and its occurrence might have meant only casual losses in the previous concentration, except that the phenomenon was accompanied by faulty amalgamation of the precious metals and by excessive losses in the mill tailings. Grease and oil, present by accident, were the cause of the trouble.

Gaz metal arc welding is commonly used for producing large frames and assemblies. Even for light aluminum and thin wall assemblies, the GMAW technique is increasingly preferred over the GTAW technique. This is particularly true where the welding gun motion is achieved accurately with automated or robotic systems and when using pulsed or regulated metal deposition. In this study, butt joints in floor welding position are tested at speed ranging from 1.5 to 16 m/min. Attempts are made of find parameters providing good and repeatable joint quality with minimal distortion and good appearance even at high travelling speeds. Taguchi experimental plans are proposed with different parameters tested with sheet metal samples. The parameters include typical GMAW machine settings, joint preparation geometries, wire gages, gun angles, wire feeds, and more. The robot motion speed and the proximity of the part are also considered. Direct monitoring of machine welding current and voltage is achieved. Once is found the best set of parameter settings, additional tests are carried out to verify the repeatability of weld quality. Secondly, these conditions are applied for joining and testing a floor panel made of several extrusions. Weld quality is established with Vickers micro-hardness measurements, cross section geometries of the weld pool including penetration, tensile tests and metallographic observations to establish the amount of porosity and weld microstructure in the HAZ.

In discussing the possible contribution of plastic deformation to neck growth during sintering, Wilson and Shewmon State that Lenel, Ansell, Salkind, and Early34, 35 concluded that dislocation flow is the rate-controlling process in sintering under zero external load. The experiments cited34, 35 were done with applied external loads, and the conclusions were that the same kinetics could be controlling sintering due to the force of gravity with no additional applied load. The effect of gravity on sintering behavior was previously cited.34, 31 In addition, Wilson and Shewmon argue that the conclusions of Refs. 34 and 35 are doubtful because the strain rate is proportional to stress for plastic flow. This assumption is true only for certain kinds of plastic flow such as Nabarro-Herring Microcree38 As Early, Lenel, and Ansell point out3' plastic flow, based upon dislocation movement, can exhibit strain rates which exhibit a power law relationship to the applied stress.39, 40 Wilson and Shewmon also doubt the results of Refs. 34 and 35 because the stresses in the necks are too small for x/a > 0.1. This is true, and the experiments described in Refs. 34 and 35 were done for small values of %/a. The conclusion was that plastic flow by dislocation movement was important during the early stages of sintering when x/a is small.

Rubidium and cesium were discovered by Bunsen and Kirchhoff about 100 years ago. These two elements are by no means as abundant as sodium or potassium. Their occurrence in minerals is widespread, but usually as minor constituents. There is no known specific ore containing rubidium, but rubidium is found replacing the. other alkali metals in .some minerals.. Perhaps the highest concentration of rubidium found in one mineral is in lepidolite, KLi(OH,F)2A12Si3010, which contains from 0 to 3.5%*Rb20. 0n the average, lepidolite contains about 0.5% Rb20. Other sources of rubidium are carnallite, KMgCl3?6H20; pollucite, H20.2Cs20.2AI203.9SiO2; rhodizite, R20.2A1203-3B203; biotite, H2K(Mg,Fe)3A1(Si04)3; sea water, rivers, marine and fresh water organisms, soils, and plants. Cesium, even though it is the least abundant. of the stable alkalies, has a specific ore. Pollucites a hydrous cesium aluminum silicate, may con¬tain as high as 42.5% Cs20, although again, the average Cs20 content is about 25% among the handful of known deposits. Other cesium-containing minerals are lepidolite and carnallite. Rubidium and cesium are very much like potassium in chemical properties, consequently, they are hard to separate. Because of the difficulty in obtaining pure cesium and rubidium compounds coupled with the scarcity-of supply, prices were high and the two elements enjoyed little industrial use. "In this study, we show the successful separation of rare earth metals, which are indispensable elements for the high-tech industry, from a solution containing a metal mixture by using a liquid-liquid extraction and liquid membrane based on ionic liquids. We employed newly synthesized N, Ndioctyldiglycol amic acid (DODGAA) as an extractant for rare earth metals. The DODGAA exhibited a high affinity for rare earth metals such as Y, Nd, Eu and Dy and the extraction efficiency was greatly enhanced in ionic liquids (ILs). Furthermore, stripping of the metals was readily achieved by using an acid solution. INTRODUCTIONRare-earth metals have important applications in cutting-edge technologies employed in the electronics, information technology, and automobile industries. As Japan does not have many natural metal resources, maintaining a steady supply of imported rare-earth metals is important. The total amount of rareearth metals imported into Japan was 19,000 tons/year in 1996, and this amount increased to 40,000 tons/year over the following decade (Kramer 2010). Japan is now one of the world’s major importers of rare-earth metals (Kramer 2010). However, more than 90% of the rare-earth metals imported into Japan come from China, the world’s leading supplier of rare-earth metal resources, due to their low costs. This situation made us realize the importance of a second resource of rare-earth metals: “urban mines” or discarded electronic waste. Rare-earth metals are generally separated from their natural ores by solvent extraction. However, since urban mines have different metals and the concentrations of rare-earth metals are usually low, highly efficient separation and recovery methods are required for rare-earth metals.Recently, ionic liquids (ILs), which are molten salts at room temperature, have attracted considerable attention since they are novel, environmentally friendly solvents (Kubota & Goto, 2006; Han & Armstrong, 2007). The use of ILs in liquid-liquid extraction of rare-earth metals has been reported (Kubota et al., 2012). In some cases, the IL-based systems showed better extraction ability and selectivity than those showed by the conventional organic solvent extraction systems(Nakashima et al., 2003, 2005; Hirayama et al., 2008; Fang et al., 2012). Therefore, more efficient solvent extraction processes by using ILs can be developed. In this study, we investigated solvent extraction processes in which ILs are employed and discuss the possibility of using ILs in the separation and recovery of rare-earth metals from electronic waste."
