IT is the purpose of this paper to describe a method used to determine the corundum contents of samples of hard crystalline gneiss containing both corundum and red garnet. A chemical analysis of the rock for alumina would not fix the amount of corundum because at least three other constituent minerals of the rock, mica, feldspar, and garnet, contain alumina combined with silica. "Three mol% Yttria-Stabilized Tetragonal Zirconia (YSTZ) was prepared by a sol-gel synthesis technique using zirconium tetrachloride and hydrated yttrium chloride precursors. After drying and annealing at 823K, the particle size was in the range 10 to 20 nm. The zirconia powder was sintered using a uniaxial hot press at an applied stress of 20 to 40 MPa. One hour, isothermal sintering was performed in air after initial heating at 50K/min. Theoretical density was obtained at densification temperatures above 1498K. After sintering, grain coarsening characteristics were studied using constant heating rate anneals followed by quenching, based on a model for grain coarsening in a linear heating rate cycle. The microstructural change was studied using SEM and TEM and the phases were determined using x-ray diffraction.IntroductionThe ability to sinter nanocrystalline materials to full density several hundred degrees below the normal sintering temperatures is one reason for their current interest. [1-5] Yttria Stabilized Tetragonal Zirconia (YSTZ) of grain size of about 300 nm has exhibited superplasticity, with elongations as large as 800%.[6-7] Fine grain size is critical for superplasticity. Retention of the fine grain size during sintering of nanocrystalline powder is important if a material is to exhibit superplasticity or to exhibit physical or mechanical properties associated with the ultra fine structure. This paper investigates the sintering behavior and the grain coarsening characteristics ofnanocrystalline YSTZ.Techniques for synthesizing nanocrystalline materials have been studied in great detail earlier. [8-12] The techniques used to synthesize nanocrystalline zirconia include alkoxide synthesis [9], the chloride method [11], the peroxide method [13] and the acetone-toluene method. [13] In this paper the method used in the synthesis of zirconia is the chloride technique. With this precipitation technique, either zirconium chloride or oxychloride and a corresponding yttrium salt or even pure yttria are used."

"In this paper, we report a simple and effective process for producing a surfactant mixture of O-isopropyl-N-ethyl thionocarbamate (IPETC) and 4-(tert-butyl)benzyl mercaptan (BBSH). The composite collector was synthesized via one-pot reaction of sodium isopropyl xanthate, 4-tert-butylbenzylchloride and ethylamine using tert-butyl alcohol as solvent. The whole process for the synthesis of composite collector involves neither foul smelling reagents or intermediates, nor any by-products requires special treatment for disposal, and thus can be scaled up to an industrial level. The flotation response of chalcopyrite and pyrite independently with IPETC and BBSH collectors and with their mixture (the mole ratio of IPETC and BBSH is 1:1) was assessed. The microflotation results showed that the collecting ability of BBSH was slightly stronger than that of IPETC and that IPETC was more selective collector than BBSH against pyrite, and that the composite collector displayed a stronger collecting ability toward chalcopyrite than IPETC, and superior selectivity for chalcopyrite against pyrite than BBSH. The batch flotation results showed that composite collector exhibited better performance than IPETC and BBSH. It was demonstrated that the mixing of IPETC and BBSH would give rise to a synergistic effect significantly enhancing overall flotation performance. In addition, the adsorption mechanism of BBSH on the surface of chalcopyrite was conducted by adsorption test and infrared spectrum measurement, and the results showed that the interaction of BBSH on the chalcopyrite surface was dominated by the chemical adsorption, and the formation of a strong S-M bond plays a key role in the adsorption of mercaptans on minerals surfaces. The developed flotation reagents with special preparation method is the author’s original design, patented (patent of the People’s Republic of China) and have no analogues in the world of mineral processing. INTRODUCTION Froth flotation is an essential method widely used in the mineral processing industry to selectively separate valuable minerals from gangues[1]. Worldwide, more than 109 tons of materials are treated annually by this method with the majority being metal sulfides and oxides[2]. Nowadays, the judicious utilization of complex sulfides to meet the ever-growing demand of mineral resources gains more attention, due to the gradual depletion of deposits with high grade, making imperative the development of new high-efficiency collectors and mixtures of collectors to process complex minerals. In comparison to individual collectors, the use of mixtures has several notable benefits including lower dosage requirements, improved selectivity, rates and recovery and an increase in the recovery of coarse particles[3-9]. Moreover, in terms of cost and environmental issues, using collector mixtures can reduce the total amount of agents used, thus reducing the overall effect on the environment and economic costs without affecting the flotation performance. Therefore, the search for high-efficiency mixtures of collectors is still interesting and relevant."

Auger piling system which was developed in the United States in the 1940's is gaining acceptance in many parts of the world. Although primarily used to support foundations, the system is very useful for many other applications such as soil anchors, temporary and permanent earth retention systems, restricted headroom piling and underpinning of existing foundations. In this paper, review of current construction design techniques for the Auger piling system for earth retention and underpinning of structures is presented.

Day-to-day operating practices at existing operations need provide high quality data for decisions that will impact directly on the potential value of the available resource, in addition to meeting standards of quality expected of data used in feasibility studies that will be completed to obtain additional capital required to finance operational improvements. Drill hole location, down hole survey and assay data standards of accuracy and precision have received considerable attention in recent years. The authors propose that geological descriptions of both cored and non-cored drilling warrant at least equal attention, considering their fundamental role in establishing the framework used for geological modeling and resource estimation. The iron ore deposits of the Middleback Ranges have been a major source of iron ore for almost a century. High-grade hematite-dominant ore is currently mined by OneSteel from three open pit operations supplying ore to the companyÆs integrated steelworks at Whyalla. A review of OneSteelÆs future iron ore resources, commenced in 2002, highlighted the need for more flexible and comprehensive management of all forms of geological data used in resource evaluation. Driving this program was the information needs of feasibility studies of the Iron Magnet deposit, located beneath the existing Iron Duke and Iron Duchess mines. Prior to the beginning of 2003, resource evaluation drilling data collected by OneSteel was managed using an in-house system based on industry standard relational database software. The system was demonstrably effective in ensuring the fundamental integrity of basic drilling data, but lacked necessary capabilities for the acquisition and management of geological descriptions, geotechnical and geophysical data obtained by down-hole logging. OneSteelÆs existing system for the management and interpretation of geological descriptions was restricted to storage of a single three digit code for each lithological description interval. The original logs for a large number of older drill holes could not be located, having been either poorly archived or culled from the database in the belief that they did not contribute to the understanding of the resources currently being mined. The three digit codes represented a combination of lithological and stratigraphic descriptions, including many subtle variations in iron ore colour and texture believed to be associated with variations in geochemistry, but subsequently demonstrated to be either incorrect or inconsistently applied. This resulted in the establishment of a plethora of codes for a relatively small number of distinct lithologies. Improvements implemented by OneSteel geologists addressed these shortcomings by ensuring the new data management system: facilitated the objective description of lithological characteristics; distinguished between obsevations and interpretations (eg lithology versus stratigraphy); promoted consistency between descriptions provided by different geologists; and helped to ensure data integrity by developing an audit trail for alterations made to data subsequent to its acquisition. The data used to develop interpretations of mineralisation distribution and characteristics are fundamental to the effective utilisation of a mineral resource: any mineÆs most important asset. Resource related risk is widely recognised as the principal source of technical risks affecting resource development projects, whether they are new mines or expansions of existing operations. A key lesson from this work is that most commercial or æin-houseÆ developed geological data management systems are able to handle basic data validation tasks effectively. Geologists, however, need to ensure that the data management system is appropriately structured to help promote the acquisition of objective and consistent data for interpretation.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines investigated a hydrochloric (HC1)-calcium fluoride (CaF2) leaching procedure to treat domestic manganese (Mn)-bearing silicate resources. The proposed process is an alternative to high-temperature and energy-intensive extractive techniques. Single-stage leaching with a stoichiometric amount of HCl and a F-Mn mole ratio of 0.2 extracted 96 pct of the Mn when the leach conditions were 50° C, 3 h, and 35 pct solids. Ninety-eight percent of the Mn was extracted during countercurrent leaching at similar conditions. A process flowsheet was developed that incorporated HC1-Cab leaching, excess leach acid utilization, fluoride (F) recycle, and Mn recovery. When the domestic manganese silicate ore was processed, 98 pct of the Mn was extracted, 99 pct of the Cab was reclaimed, and a leach residue was produced that passed the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Extraction Procedure (EP) Test for nonhazardous waste.

The competitive market potential for solvent-refined coal is estimated and the market advantages are enumerated. Markets are possible in combustion, railroad locomotion, and carbon electrodes. The combustion characteristics are consistent with expected air pollution restrictions on the emission of sulfur and particulate matter. A market potential of sufficient size exists to support the initiation of solvent refining in the United States. The market analysis should help fuel producers determine the advisability of their undertaking solvent refining of coal.

This summary of international mineral exploration activities for the year 2007 draws upon available information from industry, literature and U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) specialists. The summary provides data on exploration budgets by region and mineral commodity, identifies significant mineral discoveries and areas of mineral exploration, discusses government programs affecting the mineral exploration industry and presents analysis of the mineral industry based upon these data. Two types of information are reported and analyzed in this annual review of international exploration for the year 2007: 1) budgetary statistics expressed in U.S. nominal dollars provided by Metals Economics Group (MEG) of Halifax, Nova Scotia, and 2) information on regional and site-specific exploration activities that took place in 2007 and compiled by the USGS.

O presente trabalho teve como objetivo caracterizar a temperabilidade de uma liga Fe-Ni-Cr. Amostras do material foram submetidas a temperaturas de encharque de 800ºC e 1100ºC e resfriadas utilizando salmoura e nitrogênio líquido. Para a caracterização do material, foram realizadas análises de EDS, MEV e DRX para se determinar, respectivamente, a composição química das fases, a microestrutura e a transformação de fases que podem ter ocorrido. Os resultados microestruturais não mostraram evidencias de transformação de fase, mas que houve o surgimento de maclas de deformação associadas à ciclagem térmica. No entanto a difração de raios-x para amostras tratadas a 800ºC, com aparentemente segregação intergranular, evidenciou alguma transformação de fase.

A CANVASS of the various institutions known or suspected to be giving courses dealing with petroleum and gas revealed the courses listed in the accompanying table, which includes a summary of the number of class hours, as a whole, of the courses listed. It will be observed that the situation is grati-fying. Courses are presented in different institutions in the main geographic sections of the country, so that students have no difficulty in obtaining education in this field. The committee believes that the courses that are offered in many institutions are so inadequate in amount as to make it unwise for students who have not had additional work to consider themselves trained in this field. We strongly urge the few schools now presenting the most adequate courses to develop these more fully, bringing their work up at least to 300 hours, and let other schools concentrate their energies in other fields.

ABSTRACT: In June 2001, a fatal rockburst affected a longwall face in the Houillères du Bassin de Lorraine (HBL), France. Subsequently, a large operation of in situ stress measurements by overcoring was carried out with two main objectives: providing input data for the back analysis of the dynamic event and characterising the stress field in the next panels to be mined for identifying other potential high-risk zones. This paper makes a synthesis of the results of the overcoring tests performed and discusses those results in connection with the mining context, numerical model predictions, laboratory rock test results and microseismic activity. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: Im Juni 2001 hat ein Bergschlag eine Kohlengrube des Houillères du Bassin de Lorraine (HBL, Lothringen, Frankreich) schwer beschädigt. Nach diesem Unfall sind Spannungsmessugen durch Überborung durchegeführt worden, mit zwei Hauptziele : 1/ Daten zu liefern für die Retro-analyse des dynamischen Gebirgsschlag und 2/ die Spannungen in den zukünftigen Ausbauen so gut wie möglich zu charakterisieren, um eventuele andere Risikozonen festzustellen. Dieser Artikel stellt eine Synthese der erzielten Ergebnisse vor. Er diskutiert diese Ergebnisse in Verbindung mit dem gesamten Kohlengruben Zusammenhang, mit den Ergebnissen von numerischen Modellierungen, mit der Labor-Charakterisierung und mit der microsismische Überwachung. Cet article présente une synthèse des résultats obtenus, et discute ces résultats en liaison avec le contexte d’exploitation, les résultats de modélisation numérique, de caractérisation en laboratoire et de surveillance microsismique. Porphyry type mineralization of Lower Cretaceous age in eastern Queensland has been recognized only from the easternmost part of the northern New England Orogen (Day, Murray and Whitaker, 1978), within the northern Yarrol Province (Horton,1982). Recent work about the Mt. Suthers (Pb, Zn, Ag, Cu, Au), Lug-e-nor (Cu, Pb, Zn, Ag, Au, Mo), and German Tully (Cu, Au, Bi) prospects suggest that there has been a phase of porphyry type mineralization within the Gympie Province, of Lower Cretaceous age, overprinting earlier Permo-Triassic phases. About the Mt. Suthers Prospect surface samples of shallow, medium to heavy textured soils derived from marine sedimentary rocks of Permian age, and extrusive and intrusive igneous rocks of intermediate composition and Triassic age, were analysed for Cu, Zn, Pb, Co, Cr, Ni, Fe, V, Mn and Ag. Whereas strong iithological control determined the distribu- tion of Cu (diorite) and of Cr, Ni, Fe and V ,sedimentary rocks), the distribution of Pb, Zn, Ag and of Cu, were determined by mineralization of faults by a cavity fill hydrothermal process. Gold is associated with the Pb, Zn, Ag mineralization. Co and Mn showed distributions independent of lithology and structure. The fault controlled style of mineraliz- ation at Mt. Suthers is repeated at other localities to the south; Calgoa, Marodian, and German Gully. Relative dating of structural features and isotopic dating of nornblende porphyrites (134-135 m.y.) near and related to those mineralized at German c;ully suggest a previously unrecognized phase of porphyry copper style mineralization in south-east Queensland of Lower Cretaceous age (Fig. 1).

Flash flotation plays an integral role in many of the gold and sulfide mineral concentrators around the world, and yet despite this widespread use, very little information on this unit process is available in the published literature. For operations to maximise the performance of their flash flotation circuits, understanding how these cells operate, the nature of the particles they target and how to predict whether a flash flotation cell should be used on a specific ore type is of vital importance. This paper provides a summary of the key findings of a large flash flotation research project based in the operating environment of a refractory gold concentrator. The influence of key flotation performance criteria including gas dispersion, residence time and particle segregation within the cell will be discussed and recommendations for process improvements will be made throughout. The nature of the particles within the flash cell will be examined, as will the impact on the type of particles that are passed to downstream processes when the flash flotation cell is taken off-line. The development of a laboratory method to determine whether an ore is suitable to undergo the flash flotation process is also presented for its potential to aid in flow sheet development and optimisation for new ores.CITATION:Newcombe, B, Bradshaw, D J and Wightman, E M, 2012. Onahama Smelter of Onahama Smelting & Refining Co., Ltd. has two green- charge reverberatory furnaces; the old furnace was constructed in 1965 and the new one in 1973. This paper discusses the use of oxygen-oil burners in a green-charge reverberatory furnace and also compares the copper loss in slag between the two furnaces at Onahama Smelter. During the past ten years of operation, no shutdowns of the old furnace were necessary and the smelting capacity was increased by 25% by the use of two oxygen-oil burners. These burners are suitable for a green-charge reverberatory furnace to in- crease the smelting capacity without causing an increase of the exhaust gas volume and refractory erosion. After two years of operation of the old furnace, a bottom build-up in the charging zone of approximately 50 centimeters was experienced, and this build-up has stayed at this level since then. In 1973, a new additional reverberatory furnace was put into operation. Copper content in slag of the new furnace was lower by approximately 0.15% than that of the old one during the first several months after the start-up. Investigations were then made on the effect of the bottom conditions in the charging zone on the copper content in slag.

The creep properties of lead alloys have been studied by a number of investigators but most of the work has been done on extruded material and the amount of data available on rolled alloys is surprisingly limited. Greenwood1 and his collaborators investigated various rolled commercial leads containing relatively small amounts of impurities, Phillips2 likewise studied rolled commercial leads, although he did include a few alloys— such as tellurium lead and one per cent antimonial lead. But as far as the authors are aware no data on the creep properties of so-called "hard leads"-—i.e., containing from 4 to 8 per cent antimony—have been published. In this paper some data are presented on a few antimonial lead alloys and compared with a copper-bearing lead. Preparation OF Specimens All the alloys used in this investigation were cast at a temperature of 400°C. into an open cast-iron mold preheated to Ioo°C., the resultant casting being % by I by 10 in. The copper-bearing alloy was cold-rolled by 10 per cent passes to a thickness of 0.100 in. Creep specimens 16 in. long were prepared by clamping the strips between wooden blocks and machining the edges of the strips parallel by means of a plane. Careful manipulation gave parallel specimens with no reduced section and with a minimum of distortion. The antimonial lead castings were hot-rolled in 10 per cent passes at a temperature of I50°C. to a thickness of 0.400 in., the heating being carried out in an electric oven after each pass through the rolls. After the castings had been broken down to 0.400 in., they were allowed to cool to room temperature and then cold-rolled to 0.100 in. with the usual Io per cent passes. Sufficient time was allowed after each pass for the strips to cool to room temperature. The apparatus and method of measuring strain have been adequately described in a previous paper3 and essentially the same practice was used in obtaining the present data. The Orchard Valley Mine, a large underground coal mine located in western Colorado, experienced a major mine fire during an idled Sunday on June 1, 1986. This mine had extensive problems with spontaneous combustion near the coal outcrop. Spontaneous combustion has been determined to be the probable cause of that fire. Preparing for a mine emergency was an on-going task. Once the emergency occurred, much of the preparation work was implemented and aided in controlling the situation. Later, the successes and shortfalls that arose from that emergency were analyzed for future course of action. This paper summarizes the activity that led up to the major fire, the handling of that emergency, the lessons learned, and the changes implemented.

INTRODUCTION Man is exposed to many agents which induce mutations in germ cells and/or cancer at work, at play, and at home. In this total mix of mutagenic and carcinogenic agents, how important are radon and its daughters? Before man moved into caves and other permanent dwellings, the principal mutagenic and carcinogenic agent to which he was exposed was natural background radiation--cosmic rays, radium and potassium-40 in his food, plus gamma rays and radon from the soil and rocks. When man moved into caves, captured fire, and began to preserve and store foods, his exposure to carcinogens and mutagens took a quantum leap. Carcinogens and mutagens appear to act in the same way, that is, by altering the DNA or nuclear proteins of cells. Most mutagens are carcinogens, and vice versa, so when I say mutagens from here on, I will be referring to both. The relationship of the two is emphasized by the fact that administration of a carcinogen to a group of animals not only increases cancer rates among the exposed animals, but also among their progeny (Tomatis 1979). Environmental Mutagens Smoke from man's fires, overheated foods, and foods preserved by smoking, resulted in ingestion and inhalation of many polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons--many of which are mutagens. Caves and houses with tight windows and doors tend to collect the radon which is constantly emanating out of soil, rocks and concrete, so man's exposure to the radon daughter component of background radiation increased several fold. Preserving food by salting or pickling with material that contained nitrites and nitrates led to increased ingestion of nitrosamines, which are potent mutagens. When his grains and other foods were stored in slightly damp rooms, fungi or mold would grow on them. Several of these fungi are now known to produce very potent mutagens. The best known of these is aflatoxin B (Ramachandra 1979). It may seem strange that a living organism would produce a mutagen. One might think that it would scramble its own genetic heritage. The reason it does not is that it produces the mutagen in an inactive form. It can be activated only by an animal's enzyme systems after being eaten. When man moved into cities, the collective smoke from wood and coal fires further increased his exposure. That particular smoke has now mostly disappeared, but has been replaced by smoke from automobiles and industry. When man moved into the age of technology, his exposure to mutagens again increased dramatically. Many mutagenic chemicals, from benzene and beta naphthylamine to a long array of pesticides and tobacco products have been added to our environment. Excess deaths from cancer are now being observed among chemists in most industrialized nations. Mutagens are even found in much of our wine, beer, and whiskey (Keller 1980). Some of the chemical mutagens were widely used in food or in other commercial products before their potential was discovered. Striking examples of this is the original butter coloring agent and the polychlorinated biphenyls that have been widely used in brake fluids and electrical transformers. Large quantities of them have been discarded or disposed of in a careless manner--in such a way that many of them have contaminated our food, our ground water and air (Landrigan 1981). In this nation, with the help of several recent laws, we were just beginning to get control of the industrial chemical mutagens. With the relaxing of these laws that is currently going on, it appears that it will be many more years before we really bring chemical mutagens under control. Many nations have yet to come to grips with this problem. On top of this massive array of chemical mutagens we have now added radiation from many artificial sources. For most of us this means medical X-ray and fallout from nuclear weapons testing. Ionizing radiation is one of the most potent mutagens, so it has caught the public eye, and its contribution cannot be ignored. Fortunately, by the time we started using radioactive materials in quantity with the Manhattan Project, we had experience with radium and X-ray (some of it bad); we knew enough radiobiology and enough about methods of radiation protection so that most nuclear laboratories have had a phenomenal record of radiation safety. Radiation is one new technology with great potential for harm that has not exhibited that potential except for a few isolated situations like that of radium dial painters, uranium miners and atomic bomb victims. Uranium miners slipped into this list almost by accident. We could have protected our uranium miners just as well as we did the workers in nuclear laboratories; but we failed to do so. Why didn't we? The reason is simple. The Atomic Energy Commission was charged with protecting the health of their workers. They did not wait for a pile of bodies before they introduced controls. Congress appropriated the money, and taxpayers were willing to pay for the protection against radiation. Miners unfortunately did not work for the Atomic Energy Commission. Although mine operators were ignorant about radiation, the key item was that in the 1950s nobody was willing to pay the extra costs of adequate ventilation to control the high levels of radon and radon daughters in uranium mines. A methodology is presented for the spreadsheet solution of processing networks performing separations with the methodology developed here a spreadsheet grid is used to represent networks with and without recycle loops. In this manner, network solutions are numerically approximated by spreadsheet grid solutions. The methodology was used to explore the ramification networks developed by the Chinese for tungsten and molybdenum processing. Non-linear stage transfer functions for two-component sharp separations can be used.
