The fundamentals of human nature don't change much from generation to generation, or even from century to century. Except for the spur of necessity and the lure of reward and ad venture, few of us would bestir ourselves unduly. The general welfare has little appeal to the average individual. Its promotion comes about mainly as a by-product to individual efforts directed at more personal benefits and satisfactions. In discussing incentives for the mining industry, we really are talking about incentives for people who devote their energies and resources to mining. The vigorous and productive mining industry as we have known it was the product of the varied incentives we have known in the past: the lure of great financial reward if you struck it rich; the thrill of romance and adventure in the search for mineral wealth, usually along the frontiers 'of civilization; the satisfaction of developing a great, productive enterprise by the application of skill, courage, and determination in the face of obstacles. Back of the prospector and engineer were other venturesome persons willing to take a flyer with their savings in a grubstake, or in stock in a promising mining venture, hoping for large returns, but reconciled to take a loss and try again with the next opportunity. It is free enterprise-a chance for high profits, but a chance also of total loss-that created the great mining industry of this country and of the world. Free enterprise has given us, in the United States, the greatest productive system in the world, the highest standard of living, the most abundant life. The lure of gold-whether from the ground or merely incidental to the discovery and development of our mineral resources-pushed our frontiers westward across the country and northward into Canada and Alaska far in advance of the staid course of agriculture and commerce. No one guaranteed success to our forebears as they risked life and fortune in developing a new country. Self-reliance was the backbone of our economic and spiritual Progress and achievements. Our neighbors had little time to spare from their own problems. And though there was a willingness among the pioneers to help one another, they didn't lean too much on one another.

Sodium-aluminum and potassium-aluminum silicates are among the more important rock-forming minerals of the earth's crust. They also appear as constituents of some metallurgical slags and of some refractory materials. Consequently, knowledge of their thermodynamic properties is interesting and valuable from several viewpoints. This paper reports experimental determinations of the low-temperature heat capacities and entropies at 298.16° K. of albite, jadeite, and nephelite it the sodium-aluminum silicate series and of adularia, ferriferous orthoclase, leucite and kaliophilite in the potassium-aluminum silicate series. Also high-temperature heat-content and entropy increments about 298.16° K. are reported for albite, jadeite, nephelite, and carnegieite in the sodium-aluminum silicate series. Except for a few high-temperature heat-content values for albite, all these data are available for the first time.

INTRODUCTION The Lake Merced Transport is being constructed as part of San Francisco's Clean Water Program. The Clean Water Program, which began in the early 1970's, is designed to control wet weather, storm sewage overflows into the Pacific Ocean and San Francisco Bay. To accomplish this goal, a system of large underground storage and transport facilities, pump stations, modernized treatment plants, and outfalls is being built. By 1991, eighty percent of the system had been completed and was in operation. One of the remaining projects for the Clean Water Program is the Lake Merced Transport. The Lake Merced Transport is located in the extreme southwestern portion of San Francisco, as shown in Figure 1, Project Location. The transport will convey dry weather flow from the existing Lake Merced Pump Station to the Westside Pump Station. During wet weather, the transport will fill with sewage and runoff, with a storage capacity of 36 million liters. The Lake Merced Transport was expected to be excavated entirely within the Colma Formation, an alluvial deposit consisting of weakly cemented sand. Once excavation of the access portal at the Sloat/Great Highway parking lot began, it became evident that a portion of the tunnel would be excavated through beach/dune sand. "Micropiles are small diameter, bored, grouted-in-place piles incorporating steel casing and/or reinforcements. The omission of micropiles from most United States building codes has resulted in the application of varying standards for design and installation. The ADSC/DFI Micropile Committee has developed a proposed section for the 2006 edition of the International Building Code (IBC 2006) covering micropiles. The proposed IBC 2006 micropile code section is presented, along with comparisons to existing micropile codes and guidelines. A discussion section is provided to clarify sections of the proposed code. IntroductionMicropiles, defined as small diameter (typically less than 12 inches outer diameter), bored, grouted-in-place piles incorporating steel casing and/or reinforcements, are becoming common foundation elements for new construction, retrofits, and emergency repairs. Developed in Europe in the 1950's and used in United States practice since the late 1970's, micropiles are typically not addressed in building codes, particularly in the United States. As a result, micropiles are often reviewed by building officials to a variety of standards, including drilled shafts, caissons, cast-in-place bored piles, and concrete filled pipe piles. None of these adequately address the unique design and construction aspects of micropiles. Therefore, it became apparent to the foundation design and construction community that a micropile-specific code section was required.To that end, the International Association of Foundation Drilling and the Deep Foundations Institute (ADSC/DFI) Micropile Committee appointed a subcommittee in October 2003 to develop and submit a proposed micropile code section for the 2006 IBC. The subcommittee members included the two co-authors, as well as Tom Richards (Nicholson Construction Company), Tom Armour (DBM Contractors, Inc.), John Wolosick (Hayward Baker, Inc.), Allen Cadden (Schnabel Engineering) and Matt Niermann (Schnabel Foundation Company). At the time of the writing of this paper, the proposed code section has been presented at the IBC public hearing during which it was modified slightly. Final adoption (or rejection) will be determined by the IBC at the final action hearing in September 2005. The attached code section is the revised version following the public review hearings."

Methane drainage methods can be broadly classified as surface or underground. Surface methods make use of vertical and slant holes. The underground method discussed in the present paper involves horizontal drilling from shaft bottoms and from locations along the periphery of mines. Every foot of hole drilled in coal from under- ground locations is productive and gas flows increase as hole length increases. Therefore, underground techniques have a great potential for producing large-volume flows of methane. Pumps to dewater the horizontal holes are not necessary because gas pressure forces the water out of the hole. Methane can be recovered through the use of a simple and inexpensive gas-water separator. Hydraulic fracturing, which has been used successfully to stimulate gas flows from vertical holes, has not proved practical in the case of horizontal holes.

Por ello, el presente trabajo señala el método de voladura controlada como el más adecuado para la estabilidad del talúd en explotaciones de límites finales. Dentro de este método, el criterio de velocidad pico de partícula refiere el grado de vibración producido en el terreno por los disparos, ajustándose en el cálculo de carga de los taladros. Sin embargo, en el caso de la mina Toquepala y por razones de índole estructural, el método de minado se aplica de forma moderada la zona Este. Asimismo las condiciones de este método quedan supeditadas a las condiciones geológicas, la infraestructura que se desea proteger y a los servicios auxiliares a complementarse.

Continuous operating performance and high profit is one of the major concerns in the mining industry. Information systems are expected to reinforce and enable conformance to these requirements. The companion efforts of business management and production information systems press for tighter integration to avoid over-laps, multiple instances of similar data, and expensive maintenance of databases. Implementation of advanced intelligent systems throughout a mine operation can reduce costs, optimize investment and create a shorter payback via conversion of the data accumulated by field and process devices into information, and subsequently, into decisions. However, in order to harness the potential power inherent in these intelligent devices, adequate and flexible modular knowledge-based solutions are required. Fortunately, there has been at least one such practical response to this challenge, namely the ABB IndustrialIT portfolio. With these tools in place, production efficiency is reached via integration of process, production, and quality information. Moreover, they permit immediate detection and remedial action to changes to process and boundary condition variables. Finally, using advanced optimization techniques supported by dedicated mathematical models, they allow for economic process optimization (process set points and coordination thereof, energy management, production planning, energy supply contract optimization, etc) of the plant as a whole.

Despite the media's use of the mining industry as a whipping boy over its perceived attitude towards the environment, the facts remain that the only legislated requirement in the SA Statute Books for any form of environmental impact-assessment prior to development is to be found in the Minerals Act in the form of an EMPR. Not only is our industry complying with this requirement, but moves are afoot to set up environmental management systems for existing operations in preparation for seeking accreditation under ISO 14001 when published towards the end of this year. On how broad a front are we advancing? ? Is the industry equipped to handle these challenges? ? Does it have the determination to overcome its problems? ? Do we realise that failure may mean the loss of markets overseas to competitors who can meet the international standards? ? Where are the shortcomings and when must our efforts be focussed?

Accelerometers and pressure transducers mounted in suspension components can be used to monitor the ride of haulage trucks. Presently, it is difficult to tell what caused a jolt to the truck using either pressure or acceleration data alone. When information from a Global Positioning System is recorded at the same time as shock pressures or acceleration data, then the exact location of an event can be determined. Mine management can then determine what caused the jolt to the truck.

Consumption of Diesel fuel oil in the United States has increased very rapidly during recent years. At the present time approximately 5 percent of the crude oil refined in this country is said to be processed for this purpose. This figure represents approximately 20 percent of the total distillate-type fuel oils now being produced in the United States. One factor contributing greatly to the recent increase in consumption of Diesel fuel oil has been the conversion from steam locomotives to Diesel engines by a number of railroads. Other contributing factors are greFl.ter use of Diesel engine8 in buses, trucks, tractors, water craft, and stationary power plants. The growing importance of Diesel fuel oil has resulted in a need by the petroleum industry, engine manufacturers, and consumers for more information regarding the types and quality of Diesel fuels currently being marketed. To supply this information, the American Petroleum Institute and the Bureau of Mines, United states Department of the Interior, under a cooperative agreement, have conducted a survey of Diesel fuel all produced in refineries in this country during 1950. Under the agreements, samples of Diesel fuel oil, representative of actual shipments, were analyzed by the manufacturers in accordance with instructions issued by the Fuel Survey Panel of the Automotive Research Committee of the American Petroleum Institute. Results of the analyses were transmitted to the Bureau of Mines, and that agency has studied the data and compiled them by groups in comparable form as shown in the tables of this report.

Pyne gives clear evidence of the difficulties the metallurgist is likely to encounter when he tries to recover in the blast furnace the metal from old chromite lining used as a refractory material in the copper reverberatory furnace. It appears that chromite cannot be fluxed at temperatures which usually prevail in copper blast furnaces. This calls to mind the freezing-point curve drawn by M. Simonis1 of mixtures of chromite and kaolinite. The chromite used in the experiments contained 52.9 per cent. Cr203, 22.6 FeO, 4.8 AI203, 9.6 Si02, .10.1-MgO; FIG. 1. the kaolinite was clay from Zettlitz with 98.5 per cent. clay-substance: The accompanying curve shows that the eutectic mixture with 35 per cent. kaolinite and 65 per cent. chromite freezes at Seger cone No. 15 (1435° C.), while kaolinite fuses at cone No. 35 (1770° C.) and chromite at cone No. 42 (2000° C.). The curve indicates that the difficulty in the blast furnace can be overcome by having at the smelting zone a temperature much higher than is usual in copper smelting; a charge composition similar to that prevailing at the Mansfeld copper smeltery -which gives with 23 per cent. coke a, slag of the composition Si02, .49.09; .(FeMg)0, 5.58; (CaMg)0, 16.02; A1203,-16.02-might flux and fuse chromite.

The concern for air pollution goes back centuries as will be seen from this quotation : "Strife and coal, it seems, have a hand-in-hand historical relationship. It was thought by some . . . in the Middle Ages that burning coal filled the air with dangerous poisons. So great was the concern that in 1306 King Edward I of England passed the first and unquestionably the harshest air pollution legislation edict that history will record. His proclamation declared the use of coal an act punishable by death." As related to coal mining, the air pollution problem is primarily that of its customer when using the fuel. Thus the major impact relates to markets for coal rather than the actual mining operation itself. In the vicinity of the coal mine the problem is principally related to fugitive dust from roads, transfer facilities, loading facilities, crushers, etc., and particulate matter (dust or fly ash) from thermal dryers and air cleaning tables.

Mr. Geo. W. Bain: Dr. H. C. Cooke's discussion of 'The Geology and Mineral Deposits of the Harricanaw and Bell River Basins' possesses many of the elements of a good political address; perhaps his long residence in Ottawa has some bearing upon his method of discussing geological work. The three essential parts of the address are all included. First, the plank - "Contributed discussion on the Geology and Mineral Deposits of the Harricanaw and Bell River Basins"; second, the personal attack upon the opponent, to show antipathy to the opponent as well as to his ideas; and third, controversion of a number of statements, which have been made to appear as planks of the opponents platform, even statements and work which are in no way connected with one under discussion. In the following pages, I will confine my attention to a defense of my work in the Harricanaw and Bell River basins, leaving discussion of the other areas mentioned by Dr. Cooke until results of the re-surveys are published. It is intimated that it was impossible to make a geological examination of an area of 1,600 sq. miles on a scale of four miles to the inch (base map supplied) in three and a half months, because "the area is accessible only from the railway along the northern edge together with a few roads close to it, and from rather wide separated streams?. There is one way, known to most geologists, whereby a place can be reached other than by railway coach or motor boat, and that the oldest of all -- walking. Most of the region was reached in this fashion. The boundaries of all the 18 townships included in the map are surveyed, nine are divided into lots, and the north-south and east-west centre lines of most of the others are surveyed and have mile-posts placed.

IT has been observed that a hexagonal-close-packed crystal will undergo the same macroscopic displacements as an isotropic material if the basal plane is perpendicular to the axis of twist.&apos; Other orientations may produce both bending and twisting, but this analysis will be confined to pure torsion of a right circular cylinder. The z axis, the axis of twist, and the specimen axis are coincident. The displacements are given by Uq = rz, Ur = Uz = 0 [1] where 4 is the angle of twist per unit length. This requires rotational slip, as discussed by Frank&apos; and Wilman, which may be observed readily. The relative rotation of adjoining slip planes is simply produced by a movement of a planar grid of screw dislocations."." The screw dislocations are of the same sign and they move radially inward. For hexagonal-close-packed metals, the grid is hexagonal and the screw dislocations lie in the < 2110 > directions. The displacement of a point is the resultant of two displacements produced by intersecting screws sweeping over the point. The dislocations must pass over the point (r, o) in such a manner that its resultant displacement corresponds to the observed macroscopic displacement. In February 1996 the OECD&apos;s Environment Policy Committee will commemorate its 25th anniversary with a fifth meeting at Ministerial level. Environment ministers will be taking stock of the progress made by OECD countries in protecting and managing the environment in that quarter-century, and sharing views on likely challenges and co-operative responses. Ministers can point to many important accomplishments. Scientific understanding and technological tools for establishing and monitoring risks to human health and the environment have improved dramatically since the early 1970s. All OECD countries now have in place comprehensive environmental legislation, supported by specialized institutions for policy design, implementation and enforcement. The results of these efforts are increasingly evident in the form of cleaner air and water, and improved protection of natural areas, notwithstanding the many complex problems that remain.

Our efforts at McNally, to find a better way to mechanically separate particles from liquid in a slurry have led to the development of two new centrifuges. The first unit utilizes a slotted opening screen as the filter media and retains all plus 200 Mesh and most of the 200 by 300 Mesh particles. The second unit is a solid bowl centrifuge with a novel method of removing the solids and delivers an effluent containing as little as 300 PPM solids in suspension. The first unit was designed to separate particles in the range of about 1 MM x 0 or smaller top size from the liquid slurry and produce solids having low surface moisture content, and a liquid concentrate containing a low percentage of solids. A prototype of this unit has been in the field undergoing tests for over two years. A few of these test results are shown in Tables I & 11. Testing has been mostly limited to the field of coal, how- ever this does not mean that the machine would accept only coal slurries. The machine has produced a dewatered product having as low as 5.5% surface moisture, and an effluent containing as low as 1.4% solids and handled slurries containing from 15 to 50% solids by weight.

"Currently, the matted-based collection process is most widely used for platinum group metal (PGM) recovery. However, because PGM-containing concentrates are becoming more enriched with UG2 (Upper Group 2) low-grade concentrates, this is expected to be integrated or replaced with an alloy collection process.The reduction LG (low-grade) concentrates with silicon carbide (SiC) was investigated. The purpose of the study was to ascertain the feasibility of using SiC as reductant with regard to metal fall, PGM grade in the alloy, slag composition, and overall PGM recovery, and if possible, the integration of such a process in the current matte-based collection process. Rowland and Easterns LG concentrate samples from Lonmin were analysed by Xray diffraction (XRD), X-ray fluorescence (XRF), and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). It was found that SiO2 and MgO are the most abundant oxides and Pd is the most abundant of the PGMs. Sulphide-bearing minerals such as chalcopyrite were detected in low concentrations (below 1%), and Cr2O3 concentrations are between 2-4%. SiC reduction of Rowland and Easterns concentrate were conducted at 1600°C with reductant to concentrate ratios ranging from 2.5 to 3.5 kg SiC per 100 kg concentrate.The reduction experiments revealed that PGM recoveries from Rowland concentrate were poor. SEM images showed entrained metal prills in the slag phase. The slag viscosity at the end of the melt was calculated by using FactSage, and the results indicated that the viscosity was higher than 4 poise, which is above that of Easterns slag. PGM recoveries for Easterns concentrate were significantly better. More than 85% of the Ir and Pd and almost 60% of the Pt were recovered in a test with a reductant to concentrate ratio of 3.5 kg SiC per 100 kg Easterns concentrate. At this reductant to concentrate ratio, Fe recovery was also the highest, at 66%. SEM imaging of a slag sample revealed few or no metal prills entrained. The FeO content in the initial concentrate charge was then increased by adding Peirce-Smith converter slag in order to decrease the slag viscosity and further increase PGM recovery. A test was conducted with the addition of 10 kg converter slag per 100 kg Easterns concentrate. The reductant to concentrate ratio was kept at 3.5 kg SiC per 100 kg Easterns concentrate. The Ir and Pd recoveries were more than 95%, while Pt recovery was almost 70%. Fe recovery increased to 76%. On the basis of these results an optimum feed ratio between Easterns and Rowland concentrates and Peirce-Smith converter slag were calculated. FactSage predicted that the concentrate charge should consist of 70-80% Easterns concentrate with 20-30 kg converter slag per 100 kg LG concentrate. SiC reduction of this optimum LG concentrate charge is expected to recover more than 90% of all PGMs. Cr and Si concentrations in the alloy will be below 1% in total.The effectiveness of SiC as reductant was also compared to carbon reduction. Carbon reduction of an optimum concentrate charge at the same reductant to concentrate ratio resulted in a marginally higher metal fall than SiC reduction. However, gas emissions and energy requirements are higher for carbon reduction.The study has shown that base metals and PGMs can be recovered in an iron alloy by SiC reduction of LG concentrate with converter slag additions. Integration of such a process into the matte-based collection process could be considered as a future alternative for smelting UG2 LG concentrates."

"The aim of this study was to develop a hydromellurgical processing for removal of arsenic from high-arsenic copper sulfide ores and concentrates, providing increase in copper recovery. In this study, three different enargite ore samples containing 28.2–46.7% copper, 1.9–15.0% arsenic and 10.6–27.5% iron were used to determine optimum conditions for the extraction of copper and removal of arsenic. High pressure oxidative leaching process was preformed using various leaching reagents such as sulfuric acid (H2SO4), ferric sulfate (Fe2(SO4)3), hydrochloric acid (HCl), ferric chloride (FeCl3), sodium sulfate (Na2SO4), sodium chloride (NaCl) solutions and distilled water (DW), respectively, under the fixed conditions which were selected to be as follows: NaCl concentration, 0.34 M; concentrations of other leaching reagents, 0.1 M; particle size, -45 ?m; pulp density, 100 g/L; agitation speed, 750 rpm; leaching temperature, 160 ?C; leaching time, 60 min and total pressure (oxygen gas and vapor pressure) into an autoclave, 1 MPa. Results show that under the leaching conditions, more than 90% of copper leaching was achieved with lower than 2% arsenic content as a consequence of the formation of arsenic precipitates in a solution of Fe2(SO4)3–NaCl. It was determined that copper, arsenic and iron concentrations in the pregnant leach solution were 42 g/L, 0.3 g/L and 0.3 g/L, respectively. As a result, it can be concluded that the Fe2(SO4)3 solution in the presence of NaCl or FeCl3 are more efficient leaching media compared to other leaching agents under the high pressure oxidation conditions, because of their high copper recovery and lower arsenic level in the pregnant leach solution.INTRODUCTION Generally, copper is usually produced from copper sulfide ores by a combination of several processes which are flotation and smelting followed by refining [1-3]. Arsenic content in copper sulfide ores tends to increase due to the depletion of high grade copper deposits, hence conventional mineral processing and metallurgical processes cannot effectively treat these ores containing high levels of arsenic to obtain consistently high purity copper concentrates. Because high levels of arsenic in copper ores/flotation concentrates reduces the value of concentrates due to the restriction of smelting process and causes it to be a source of environmental pollution [4-6]. From this point of view, the known way of prevention against high-arsenic copper sulfide concentrates in further metallurgical treatments is to develop economically and environmentally competitive technologies for removal of arsenic impurity from copper sulfide ores before treating the ores/flotation concentrates by the pyrometallurgical routes."
