Mr. Chairman, Distinguished Guests, Ladies and Gentlemen. I was delighted to be invited, and to accept the invitation, to welcome to this specialist meeting on an intriguing subject, the local participants and - most importantly - the international contributors. Technical o analysis of blast furnace operations has for many years formed the basis of intense research throughout the iron and steel industry, world wide, because the efficiency of blast furnace operation estab- lishes the foundation for all subsequent processes in a steel plant. So much depends on the constant, efficient performance of iron melting units in relation to costs, quality, regularity of operations and reli- able delivery performance to our customers.

This is the seventh major symposium organised by Illawarra Branch over the past five years and the fifth dealing with various aspects of coal. It is clear that all of you here need no convincing that black is beautiful! This symposium is on a broader canvas, covering the overall field of occurrence, preparation and utilization of black coal throughout Australia. It is thus the most comprehensive treatment of the subject by the Institute since the symposium organized in 1950 by the Sydney Branch with the co-operation of the then newly formed branches in Newcastle, Illawarra, Central Western N.S.W. and Southern Queensland, all of which shared coal as a major interest. The 1950 symposium was adopted as a volume in the series of seven published by the Fifth Empire Mining and Metallurgical Congress in 1953. This historical reminiscence brings to our minds the circumstances in which these new Institute branches were formed. This happened in the year of the presidency of the late Frank Hockey, and at the time the Australian black coal industry was in many ways at a very low ebb. It was the time of extreme shortage of coal following World War II, and the industry was beset by industrial unrest on such a scale that daily bulletins were posted listing the number of idle pits, of idle miners and of tons of lost production. There could not, of course, be any thought of export marketing. Some of the more picturesque bulletins recorded the number of pits at which the ceremonial emptying of billies took place, and the number of pits at which the aroma of the horses' breath was insupportable. At an Institute conference at the time it is on record that the late lamented Austin Edwards, that tireless mineral researcher, author and editor, in his gentle way chided the personnel of the industry and the members of the Institute for having allowed a situation to develop in which a whole generation of Australian children could grow up without ever having seen coal or knowing what it was. It is sad that most children and most Australians have still never seen coal, and think of it as something dirty and uninteresting. The desperate situation of the black coal industry inspired moves by people in industry and in governments, whose plans and efforts have been recorded elsewhere, to modernize coal mining methods, to introduce coal preparation, and generally to restore the mines and the mining communities and to re-cast the steel industry and electricity generation. Amelioration of the traditionally troubled industrial relations was an integral part of this overall programme, and whilst one would wish this aspect had progressed further the situation has, in fact, improved immensely. New investment in exploration, mining, preparation, transport and utilization both by the existing coal mining groups and by new entrants, Australian and overseas, have played a large part in bringing about the transformation of the industry to such a point that Australian needs are being fully met and a large export market is being supplied - a situation that few would have dared to hope for in those dark post-war days. Forecasts of exports from New South Wales and Queensland show coal becoming a dominant foreign exchange earner for an indefinite term. Old King Cole may have vanished from our children's nursery rhymes but King Coal is here to stay, providingthat costs in the industry can be kept within competitive limits. It is all too easy for an industry to price itself out of the export market by inflation, by increased costs for a variety of reasons, and through currency readjustments. A second proviso is that we must continue to encourage a balanced attitude to environmental matters.

It is a pleasure and a privilege to be with you for the Annual Conference of The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy.The inaugural meeting of The Institute was held in Adelaide in April, 1893. Through the kindness of your President, who passed on to me several publications concerning The Institutute I have been able to glance back over the eighty years in which The Institute has served both the profession and Australia.In that record, many names of great distinction caught my eyes. When one reads the list of past presidents of the The Institute since 1893 and the list of those to whom The Institute Medal has been awarded, one reads the headings of a biographical dictionary of the Australian mineral industries. Many famous names are there-men from the great mining companies, engineers, scientists, metallurgists and geologists. Simply to read the names is to recall great enterprise and great achievement. Going over those names one hears the echoes of the inspiring story of the establishment of the Australian steel industry, the electrolytic zinc inq.ustry, all the major developments in the mining of coal, gold, copper, silver and lead, the treatment of difficult ores, the geological exploration of a cqntinent, the discovery of uranium, bauxite, petroleum, nickel, the establishment of the alumina industry and finally the mammoth earthmoving operations of today. The list of names is a chronicle of great men who did a mighty work. They stand like milestones in the progress of a nation.When one reads further and runs down the titles of some of the papers published in the Proceedings of The Institute even a layman like myself can appreciate the dramatic developments in mining and metallurgy that have transformed the whole practice of the mineral industries in our land. Australians have made some notable innovations and discoveries both in mining techniques and in the processing of ores. Ladies and Gentlemen. It is my great pleasure on behalf of The South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy and The Geological Society of South Africa to welcome you to the 15th CMMI Congress and to Southern Africa. It is a great honour to be hosting this event and we have been looking forward to it for a long time. I am sure the technical discussions and visits will be of great value, and I am confident you will return with pleasant memories of places and people in South Africa and neighbouring countries. The theme of this Congress, Resources and Technology', is appropriate for discussions on the ways and means of going forward in the minerals industry to create the employment and wealth so sorely needed in this region. The technical programme will give mineral industry professionals from different parts of the world the opportunity to share experience and expertise for the purpose of making operations more productive, safer and environmentally acceptable to the world at large. Delegates will be exposed to current technical developments by means of 133 papers prepared for the congress: 30 on geological subjects, 45 on mining, 29 on extractive metallurgy, and 29 in the field of metals technology.

EARLY HISTORYIt is 91 years since the epic discovery of gold at the eastern end of Kalgoorlie's main street appropriately named Hannan's Street after the prospector who found the first gold here on17 June, 1893.The Spirit that motivated the early prospectors in their search for gold in this thirsty sun-burned land, unmapped, uncompromising and difficult is characteristic of gold prospectors the world over. Conditions have changed since then substituting comparative comfort for previous austerity and privation, but the quest-ing spirit, the everlasting optimism, the perseverance in the face of frustration .and disappointment still exists.It exists with the prospector who more often than not is a company geologist; it exists with the shareholder enjoying through his investment a vicarious participation in this wonderful, exciting industry and not the least with those people who have chosen the goldmining industry as their career.

10.1-SHAFT SINKING AND RAISING BY CONVENTIONAL METHODS VICTOR L. STEVEN 10.1.1-SHAFT SELECTION A great deal of thought and planning should go into the selection of a mine shaft to provide the most effective use over the greatest, period of time. It sometimes is better to make an additional capital expenditure in the initial shaft program to achieve the greatest overall shaft usage. It is possible to sink a shaft which could be used for mine development, and initial production and later convert it to a ventilation, service or escape shaft. It is important to consider a second shaft in the original planning to provide ventilation, an escapeway and services for overall efficient production and safety. A second shaft usually is required to comply with state and federal mining laws. The main items to consider in shaft selection are: 1. Installation from surface or underground. 2. Vertical or inclined (sec Sec. 10.1.4L for discussion of factors involved in choice). 3. Tonnage to be hoisted. 4. Size of mining equipment to be lowered through the shaft to the underground workings. 5. Amount of water to be handled in the mining operation. 6. Ventilation requirements. 7. Type of ground the shaft is to be sunk through. 8. Position of shaft with relation to ore body. After the main features of a shaft arc determined, such as vertical or inclined, shape, size, type of lining and support, compartments, and shaft. facilities (air, water, ventilation, pump lines, power cahles, etc.), then :I sinking plant and procedures should be planned. At this point it should be decided whether the company will sink the shaft with its own crews or award the job to a competent shaft contractor. Company sinking generally will cost less if competent shaft men are available. Money also will be saved in plant costs, such as for hoist, headframe, compressed air, buildings, etc., as these will be part of the permanent plant and can be used in the sinking operation. Labor costs generally will be lower than contractor construction rates. The advantage of having a contract, or is the speed of completion of the project. Contractors usually have headframes and hoists ready to move on the job immediately and have trained crews ready to complete the project in the shortest possible time. Next, the type of surface sinking plant (hoist, headframe, etc.) should be selected and a determination made whether it is to be temporary or permanent. In most cases it is less expensive to install the permanent, headframe and hoist, and use them for sinking. The type of actual sinking equipment to be used should be evaluated for the most efficient sinking cycle, e.g., mucking method, drilling method, and lining or support means. The proper cycling of drilling, mucking and lining is extremely important in obtaining the most favourable sinking costs. 10.1.2 - GROUND STABILIZATION AND WATER CONTROL Prior to the shaft-sinking operation an investigation should be made into ground-water conditions. While the underground mining work environment may have processes and equipment considered unique, most of the broad issues likely to affect the occupational health and safety of employees are not. One such occupational health and safety issue that is common to the mining sector and most other industries is noise. Noise as an occupational health and safety issue is of national significance. Presently noise induced hearing loss costs Australia around $35 million per year on compensation claims experience alone. Noisy equipment and work environments are still being tolerated in parts of the mining industry as `part of the job'. Where work has been undertaken in noise management, considerable emphasis has been placed on either industrial hygiene monitoring programs or the provision of hearing protectors to miners working on or around noisy equipment.Opportunities for more cost-effective and long term methods for controlling noise exist. Ready to apply solutions to noise problems in the mining industry are available, but for many mining operators this information is often difficult to obtain. To overcome this problem, the SHARE program collects and distributes solutions to occupational health and safety problems. The program aims to help organisations to close the gap between what is known about solving health and safety problems and what is actually being applied at the shop floor level: Recent developments have incorporated the SHARE program concept into worksite hazard management projects that involve the participation of employee representatives, front line supervisors and engineering personnel. Besides providing workforce members with an increased understanding of hazard management skills, the SHARE in-house program results in the implementation and sharing of solutions to health and safety problems by the program participants.

The talc deposit in Gemerská Poloma lies 350 to 400 m under the surface; the whole deposit is located at the highest-level drinking-water-source protection zone, therefore, opening in this mining area (a well, a ramp) requires higher investment, operational and water protection costs. The adit, outside the mining area, with a length of 4200 m, rising with a gradient of 3? and a diameter of 10.3 m2, allows free passage/runoff of mining-water through the adit, and guarantees low costs for transporting produced material and equipment. This solution is in total less demanding from both investment and operational point of view.

In the succeeding sessions a variety of other products which are susceptible to stress-corrosion cracking are to be considered and this afternoon's session is to be devoted to stress-corrosion cracking in light metals. The problems you have had to deal with up to now in brass have been very simple ones. From this time on the complexities become greater. You have already learned in the preceding sessions, that copper is not susceptible to stress-corrosion cracking and when you begin to alloy it with 3 per cent or larger proportions of zinc, then stress- corrosion cracking ensues. You apparently have few complications in the copper alloys you make. There is apparently no precipitation on the grain boundaries in the brass, and no precipitation within the metal itself. On behalf of my agency, the Mine Safety and Health Administration, I would like to add my appreciation that all of you could be here today. Previous dust symposia over the years have proved the value of close cooperation among universities, government agencies, and professional societies in advancing knowledge of dust research and development in the interest of miners and the industry. I'll just comment briefly on MSHA's part of the overall effort by all parties to control miners' exposure to respirable coal dust and other airborne dusts. As you know, our agency's congressional mandate is to do what is necessary to assure that miners will have safe and healthful workplaces. In the area of coal mine health, this has meant joining with the mining community in a continuous campaign to keep respirable dust and quartz levels below applicable standards to prevent or reduce disabling coal workers' pneumoconiosis and silicosis arising from excessive exposure to respirable quartz. Currently, our agency is processing about 120,000 coal dust samples taken by MSHA and company people during the year and about 8,000 samples taken from metal and nonmetal mining operations. Our dust program, like other MSHA programs, has benefited from increased computerization of records. The attack on CWP has had the highest priority of government and industry. The goal has been to sharply reduce social costs of suffering victims and their families as well as the associated future payments under the black lung benefits program. During the 1989 fiscal year, about 104,000 former miners received about one and a half billion dollars in benefits. Since the program began, nearly 25 billion dollars have been paid out. Much progress has been made in lowering dust levels in coal mines since the standard of two milligrams per meter of air was established in 1972. Before that time, there was a 4-to-10-percent probability of a miner developing coal workers' pneumoconiosis at typical pre-1972 exposure levels. However, under the maximum respirable dust levels allowed today, this probability has been reduced to about 1 percent. Since average dust levels are lower today, we can expect fewer miners to develop CWP in the future. Out goal continues to be elimination of both coal workers' pneumoconiosis and silicosis in both coal and nonmetal mining. In 1985, MSHA revised its coal mine quartz policy to allow mine operators to submit dust samples used in setting the quartz standard. Previously, only single MSHA samples were used. Even though less than half of the mine operators have taken advantage of this change, it has provided a larger population of samples for analysis then before. Also the policy allows operations that are on a reduced quartz standard to have the standard reviewed every six months. In underground coal mining, the job of roof bolter typically has higher than normal exposures to quartz. About 45 percent of respirable dust samples from roof bolting operations contain more than 5 percent quartz and therefore are put on a reduced quartz standard. One objective of the policy revision was to improve miners' health by follow-up monitoring, and this is being done with roof bolting jobs. MSHA studies of surface coal mining operations have provided data showing that bulldozer operators and highwall rotary drill operators often have high exposure to quartz dust, and our agency is directing enforcement efforts to reducing this hazard. As you know, NIOSH is the part of the United States Public Health Service with responsibility for conducting and supporting research leading to prevention and control of occupational diseases and injuries. Some years ago, NIOSH went through a process of identifying and leading occupational health and safety problems in the United States. Candidate problems were evaluated in terms of the number of people affected, the importance of the effects, and how amenable the conditions are to preventive interventions. Lung diseases were ranked first on the resulting list. Diseases from mining continue to contribute substantially to this unfortunate position of prominence. The work of the Generic Center is one of many answers to this critical problem. Although the research is often expressed in terms of dust characterization or dust control, the reality is that high dust levels are much like high blood pressure. No one cares about hypertension per se. We are concerned about the consequences of exposure to untreated high blood pressure--heart disease, kidney disease, and stroke. Similarly, if dusts were truly only a nuisance, there would be little justification for the diverse research program supported by the Bureau of Mines or by NIOSH. But mineral dusts do cause a range of significant health problems: pneumoconiosis, bronchitis, and emphysema. The research supported by the Center is aimed at doing something about them. Within a public health approach to occupational health, we have a hierarchy of interventions. Primary prevention of problems is prevention at the source: solving a problem before it affects a worker. What we call secondary prevention is an attempt to identify health problems at a sufficiently early stage that some intervention will interrupt the disease process or the development of significant impairment. Tertiary prevention refers to rehabilitation of the worker who has already suffered significant loss of function. At NIOSH, and in the Generic Center research programs, the focus is on primary prevention. Basic investigations into those things about specific dusts that promote or reduce toxicity is critical for our understanding of how to prevent disease. Also, the search for engineering solutions to reduce or control dust generation is essential to solving problems of dust over-exposure. But until the engineers create the foolproof safe environment, it will also be necessary to discover better ways to identify the earliest markers of disease. To do this, we must explore and explicate the basic mechanisms of disease through laboratory investigations as well as human observation and physiologic testing. The unique opportunity provided by the Generic Center program and highlighted in this diverse program over the next few days is that these efforts are being carried out in multiple disciplines concurrently. Also, there are periodic small and large gatherings such as this one where investigators have the chance to get together, formally present papers, and informally stimulate each other's progress towards disease prevention. To ignore the potential for this cross-cutting interaction would be a significant loss. To take full advantage of it is potentially revolutionary. I recently pulled out a book I hadn't read since I was an undergraduate. It specifically concerns the nature of intellectual ferment surrounding the development of the concept of a sun-centered rather than an earth-centered universe in the sixteenth century. The book is about more than developments in astronomy: it is a discussion of the nature of scientific revolutions. Scientific revolutions result from the brilliance, insight, and good fortune of the few superimposed on the evolutionary work of the many. They both cause and reflect significant itellectural and social ferment. For example, the revolutionary work of Copernicus in recognizing the limitations of the concept of an earth-centered universe reflected contemporaneous developments in optics, mathematics, physics, economics, and philosophy.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines develops technology to help ensure that the Nation has an adequate and dependable. supply of minerals at reasonable economic, human, and environmental cost. Our research programs seek improvements for almost every aspect of the mineral production cycle--from evaluating the availability of minerals, removing the ore from the earth, to enhancing the performance of mineral materials. The health and safety of the men and women who work in the Nation's mines and minerals processing plants and the environmental impact of mining and mineral processing are major Bureau research concerns. In recent years, the U.S. mineral industry has found it increasingly difficult to compete for a share of world markets. Many foreign producers benefit from lower production costs and higher grade deposits. Some foreign governments subsidize their mineral industries and impose fewer restrictions with respect to environmental controls and health and safety regulations. If the United States is to compete in world mineral markets, innovative technology must be found to lower the cost of recovering and processing minerals. Mining and mineral processing research by the Bureau identifies ways to help the country maintain a sound, competitive industry and a dependable mineral supply, so vital to economic growth and the national security. This work includes efforts to improve existing techniques and procedures; but more and more of the Bureau's resources are being focused on long-term, high-risk research directed at developing new approaches to mining and mineral activities--approaches like in situ mining. Bureau scientists are studying the mining applications of computer assisted mining and investigating a variety of "high tech" approaches to extractive metallurgy. Such cutting-edge research will be necessary if major advances in health and safety, environmental quality, strategic and critical minerals availability, and overall U.S. competitiveness are to be achieved. It is just such high-risk research that the industry cannot afford to conduct itself, but--in the long run--cannot afford to be without. It is this type of research that will help us arrive at a revolutionary breakthrough rather than small incremental changes in health and safety technology as well as recovery methods. Our mining and mineral processing research is also directed at reducing the Nation's dependence on imports of minerals that have key defense and industrial uses. Some of these strategic and critical minerals are particularly vulnerable to supply disruptions. We are working on technologies that would allow the United States to take advantage of domestic sources of these minerals--sources consisting primarily of deep or low-grade ores, ores with complex mineralogy we do not yet know how to process, and small deposits that are now uneconomical to mine and process. Other research activities focus on ways to reduce the Nation"s consumption of key minerals and increase the recycling of these minerals. The opportunities in this area include coal. The current middle eastern crisis reinforces the need for a stable energy supply--preferably a domestic supply. The extensive reserves of coal in this country are well documented. Perhaps what is not as well recognized is the impact that the price of coal can have on its competitive position both for domestic fuel selection considerations as well as for the ability of this country to compete in the coal export market. Today, the role to the United States is as a reliable, but high-cost exporter of high-quality coal. U.S. export coal competes with supplies from other major suppliers, including Australia, Canada, Poland. If U.S. mining costs were lowered by at least $8 per ton in the year 2000, then coal exports would surge by a projected 46 percent, and U.S steam coal displaces significant quantities of foreign coal imports in Europe. Good morning ladies and gentlemen, and may I thank you for inviting me once again to address your conference. I would first like to welcome you all, especially international delegates and conference speakers. ItÆs a pleasure to be with you all and I hope that you have the time to enjoy the many beautiful sights that the Coromandel and Bay of Plenty have to offer.   Holding your conference in Waihi is particularly apt, especially bearing in mind the conference theme û 'Mining in the Community'. There can be few venues in the world that can boast a world class gold deposit of the likes of Martha Hill located right here in the centre of a rural service town. ItÆs a deposit that has a mining history active now in its third century and that to date has yielded some 7.5 million ounces of gold and 50 million ounces of silver. I doubt that when John McCombie and Robert Lee discovered gold at Martha Hill in 1878 that they had any inkling that their endeavours would be the foundation for a mine that would become such an inseparable part of the economic and social fabric of Waihi for the next 130 years.   This is now my fifth appearance at a New Zealand minerals conference, I especially value such occasions as it allows me to comment on your industryÆs performance over the past year, share my thoughts on matters affecting your industry, and also to give you some feedback from central government.

Substantial schedule advantages can be made on projects if cross-passage construction can occur at the same time as tunnel boring machine (TBM) operation with little or no impact on TBM logistics. However, this approach can prove difficult to achieve with many of the more cost-effective means of supporting the segmental lining during cross-passage break-out. This paper discusses the constraints and shortcomings of conventional approaches, and describes how a cost-effective solution involving a shotcrete shell and opening constructed inside the segmental lining was designed and constructed to deliver cost and time savings on Seattle University Link contract U220.The paper explains the spatial and schedule constraints on the TBM tunnelling and cross-passage construction, and how a shotcrete solution was arrived at in preference to traditional approaches. As the solution was novel the design had to be robust, and the paper explains how this was achieved through a combination of 3D finite element modelling and closed form solutions. Following a description of the trials to verify that the structure could be demolished post-cross-passage completion, the paper describes how the shell solution was constructed, used and demolished safely to leave the lining surface in a clean and undamaged state fit for tunnel operation.CITATION:Harding, A, Chappell, M, Burdick, M and Krulc, M, 2014. In a world of technology and electronic communication, it is easy to forget what engineers do best with a problem: sitting around a table, exchanging views and ideas with sketches and respecting everyone?s view. This was the approach adopted in the project to arrive at a solution for the cross passage opening sup-port for the Seattle University Link Extension. Schedule and space constraints usually impede concurrent cross passage excavation and tunnel boring machine (TBM) operation. And where the space is constrained, opening support solutions that maximize available cross sections are of great benefit. While there are a number of solutions that minimize space, some of these solutions can require expensive steelwork and extensive drilling and fixing. However, following a detailed round-the-table discussion of the options and constraints, it was identified that a shotcrete shell would not only limit obstruction of the space during installation, but also permit easy installation, particularly around services, and avoid costly steelwork and drilling and fixing.

When the HSE Act was introduced in New Zealand in April 1993, one of the prime aims of the Government was to signal to the industry. The Government's recognition of the employer as the key person responsible for safety and health in the workplace and to actively encourage employers to self manage the health and safety function. Because of the significant change in the philosophy behind the new legislation, and because of the inherently conservative nature of the mining industry, it has taken some years for both the industry and the regulators to reach the stage of considering the framework in which a controlled degree of self management can proceed.   In this paper, some of the issues relating to the legitimacy of the process are considered, some of the questions raised in the minds of those charged with implementing the legislation are discussed, and the views of some eminent authors are examined.   The latter part of the paper focuses on a programme called the Reduced Site Surveillance Programme, which grew out of Goal 2 of the New Zealand Mining Inspection Group's 5-Year Strategic Plan. The programme is described in some detail, and the criteria applied at each stage of the programme is discussed. The paper concludes with the author's expectations of the longer term outcomes of the programme.

THE Mather mine, of the Negaunee Mine Co., is within the limits of the City of Ishpeming, on the Marquette iron- range in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. It is named for William G. Mather, who has served as President, and Chairman of the Board, of The Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Co. for well over 50 years. The property comprises nearly the square mile of section 2, T.47 N. R.27 W., which, except for 20 acres in the northeast corner, was leased by The Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Co. to the Negaunee company. The latter is a partnership of Cleveland-Cliffs and the Bethlehem Steel Co., organized to equip the property, retaining Cliffs in charge as operator. Shipments of ore from this area are mainly through Marquette, which is 16 miles to the northeast on Lake Superior, or through Escanaba, a Lake Michigan port, 65 miles to the south. Cleveland-Cliffs, in 1943, operated 12 mines in the Lake Superior district, with shipments of 6,635,576 tons for the year. GEOLOGY The north footwall of the Marquette Range synclinorium outcrops near the north line of sec. 2, the iron formation dipping to the south at an angle of about 40º. The south side of the trough reappears at a distance of 4 ½ miles on sec. 26 and the surface geology between shows iron formation or intrusive diorites. The latter are harder than most phases of the iron formation and, as a result of glacial action, appear as buttes or low-lying hills. The general elevation of sec. 2 is about 1450 ft. above sea level, or 850ft. above Lake Superior, and the higher diorite outcroppings about 1600 ft. above sea level. The geological structure has been complicated by a series of major and minor faults, one of which may be illustrated by the diorite sheet, which tilts south with the iron formation in the north half of the section and then reappears near the center to repeat this sequence. Sectionally the geological series includes a nearly eroded capping of Goodrich quartzite followed by the considerable thickness of Negaunee iron formation, which is cut by intrusive dikes or diorite sheets, and underlain by the Siamo slates grading into quartzites. The ore deposits occur mainly in troughs formed by the intersection of impervious dikes and the footwall slate, but include locally enriched lenses or bands in the iron formation and also interbedded with the Siamo slate. The ore is a soft red hematite with an indicated dried analysis from the surface drilling to date of 61.50 per cent Fe, 0.134 per cent P, 5.40 per cent Si, 2.87 per cent Al and 0.015 per cent S. EXPLORATION A diamond-drilling campaign started in 1937 actually had its inception in 1917, when a number of shallow test holes were put down for the purpose of locating ore that might be quickly developed and mined

THIS is not simply the story of how a water filled shaft was developed into a million-ton- a-year producing mine in the space of four critical years, although it is reason enough for telling it, but it is also the saga of an engineering achievement in which knowledge nurtured by years of experience in coal and ore mines was blended together and the best from each type of mining selected. The entire system of mining was detailed on maps by the mining engineering department before the shaft was unwatered, and subsequent development followed these plans nearly to perfection. The selection of machinery was particularly critical as it was necessary to push production from only a few headings in the early stages of development and metal mine machinery was being used in a coal panel-system of mining.

At the start of World War I1 the demand for iron ore to supply Woodward blast furnaces, and rapid exhaustion of the main source of Wood- ward ore, No. 3 Red Ore mine, necessitated speedy opening of the Pyne mine. The mine is three miles southwest of Bessemer and is responsible for 80 pct of Woodward ore, the rest coming from the Songo mine. The Woodward Iron Co. is one of the old producers of the Birmingham district. S. H. Woodward, an iron-master of Wheeling, overheard two Union soldiers conversing about ore and coal lands in Alabama, which lead to the acquisition of the first ore lands of the Woodward Co. in 1869. Development was not begun until after the death of S. H. Woodward; his two sons, W. H. Woodward and J. H.
