"WITHIN THE BROAD PARAMETERS implied by the title of my speech, I propose to deal more particularly this evening with a subject the many aspects of which have constituted the essential elements of one of the main thrusts undertaken by the MAC in the past two years, i.e., to create among Canadians a much greater awareness of the importance of mining and to demonstrate to them what are the many and varied benefits they derive from mining activities across their country. In other words, MINING - WHAT IT MEANS TO CANADA.I also intend to discuss some aspects of government-industry relationships.I am very conscious of the fact that I am speaking to an audience made u in large part of experts in several fields of mining and exploration activities. They will be familiar with many of the points I intend to discuss. However, without in any way suggesting that familiarity breeds contempt, might I emphasize that even in this particular forum there is justification for reiterating some of our basic philosophies and suggesting ways whereby they might be better understood and promoted.Let us first summarize the present dimensions of the Canadian mining industry."

Demand for nonfuel minerals depends in large measure on economic activity, which rose in each quarter of 1985. However, despite 1.7 million new housing starts and a 7% increase in motor vehicle production, many domestic metal mining operations experienced continued difficulties as a result of import competition, greater use of newer engineered materials, emphasis on multi-unit housing, and downsizing of motor vehicles. Recognizing the continued difficulties of the domestic metal mining industry, many corporations made major efforts to retrench and rationalize - selling, closing, or spinning off less profitable operations, renegotiating labor contracts, and inviting increased participation by foreign firms. About 15% of US energy was imported in 1985. This included $52 billion worth of crude oil and refined products, adding significantly to the overall merchandise trade deficit of $149 billion. With the exception of a few large-bulk, low-value raw materials, most minerals move relatively freely in world trade. The strong dollar encouraged imports and made exporting more difficult US nonfuel minerals trade deficit totalled $17 billion. The US continued to rely on imports for many important strategic minerals in 1985 (see accompanying Table). Increased pressures for protection included major mineral products such as steel, ferroalloys, and copper. But President Reagan, in his Feb. 1986 "Economic Report to the Congress" stated: "Our international trade policy rests firmly on the foundation of free and open markets." He also stressed the need for fair trade and more open markets internationally. The National Critical Materials Council, created by law in the latter part of 1984, was activated in the latter part of 1985. Its first public hearing was held in January 1986. The Council is to review the nation's materials posture and advise the President on such matters. Compared with 1984, the value of US raw nonfuel mineral output rose 2%, to $24 billion. This supported the production of $244 billion worth of processed materials of mineral origin. Raw steel production - a major indicator of both material use and mineral production - fell 4% to 81 Mt (89 million st). Consequently, domestic iron ore production fell to 49 Mt (55 million st), about 97% pelletized. Iron ore imports fell 7% to 16 Mt (18 million st). Raw steelmaking capacity fell 4% to 117 Mt (129 million st). Pacts with 16 leading steel exporting nations have been negotiated in an effort to reduce import penetration of the domestic market. Domestic producers of bulk ferroalloys of chromium, manganese, and silicon operated at about 40% capacity. The US mined no manganese or chromium. Only a small quantity of ferronickel was produced from domestic laterite mining in Oregon. Molybdenum production increased slightly to 49 kt (54,000 st). Mine shipments of tungsten, another mineral tied to steel production, also fell slightly to 1.1 kt (1200 st) of contained metal. Even the domestic aluminum smelting industry suffered reverses as high stocks and low prices reduced production 16% to 3.5 Mt (3.8 million st). Similarly, imports of bauxite fell 7% and alumina 10%. Production of magnesium metal fell 6% to 136 kt (150,000 st), while titanium metal production remained unchanged at 22 kt (24,000 st). Copper mine production was unchanged at 1.1 Mt (1.2 million st). Copper refinery production fell slightly to 1.1 Mt (1.2 million st). Lead mine production rose 24% to 400 kt (440,000 st). Zinc mine output was down 10%, to 225 kt (250,000 st). Refined lead production increased 28%, to 510 kt (560,000 st). Primary slab zinc production fell 5% to 240 kt (260,000 st).

Introduction In 1986, the US economy passed the $4 trillion mark. However, the value of domestically processed materials of mineral origin fell slightly to $240 billion. The value of metals produced from US ores was unchanged at $5.6 billion, as was recycled scrap at $4 billion, while the value of industrial minerals rose slightly to $17.9 billion. Consumer demand strongly affects mining and the US economy is relatively saturated with longlived products. Moreover, in recent years there has been a steady increase in consumer, mortgage, and federal debt, inhibiting new purchases of goods. Motor vehicles and housing are major traditional markets for mineral materials. However, the 242 million US citizens already possess 170 million licensed motor vehicles and 92 million dwelling units. In 1986, domestic motor vehicle production fell 3%, to 11.3 million units, while new housing starts rose slightly to 1.8 million units. Nearly all mineral commodities move relatively freely in world trade. As detailed in Figs. 1 and 2, in the last three decades world production of major mineral materials has greatly increased. At present, substantial excess productive capacity exists not only in the US but also in many other countries. Consequently, the US mineral industry is encountering increasing competition from other sources, along with increasing competition from newer, engineered materials. For example, US production of plas¬tics has risen from 900 kt (1 million st) in 1950 to 22.7 Mt (25 million st) in 1986 - on a volume basis significantly greater than steel. Plastics, too, are mineral-based materials, some 7% of petrochemicals going to their manufacture. 1986 saw increased calls for protection. But President Reagan, in his 1987 State of the Union Message and Economic Report to the Congress, reaffirmed adherence to a policy of free and fair trade. However, he stressed the need for increased efforts to open foreign markets to US exports and to increase competitiveness of US industry US imports of mineral-based minerals in 1986 were valued at $40 billion and exports at $24 billion. Strategic minerals As detailed in Fig. 3, imports supplied a significant proportion of total US consumption of several important materials, including many classified as "strategic and critical." There were no changes in stockpile policy during the year. Congress debated the President's 1985 proposals to reduce stocks of World War II-type materials and to focus more on high technology materials needed for the cutting edge of future military material. But no final action resulted. However, Congressional concern about apartheid in South Africa did result in increasing pressure to limit imports of South African minerals. Meanwhile, the National Critical Materials Council in the Executive Office of the President intensified its efforts to be better able to advise the President. The value of domestically processed mineralbased materials rose slightly to $250 billion. The value of US metals rose sharply to more than $7 billion. Industrial minerals rose slightly to $18 billion recycled scrap was valued at $4 billion. Metal prices rose sharply toward year-end. A number of mining and metal companies experienced increased profitability, fostering more optimism about the future. Consumer demand strongly affects mining because the US economy is relatively saturated with long-lived products. Consumer, mortgage, and federal debt continue to rise. 244 million citizens already possess 170 million licensed motor vehicles and 100 million dwelling units. New car production fell 9% to 7.1 million units, but truck and bus production rose 9% to 3.8 million units. New housing starts fell 10% to 1.6 million units. Excess productive capacity exists not only in the US, but also in many other countries. Consequently, the US mineral industry is encountering stiff competition from others, as well as increasing competition from newer engi¬neered materials. Domestic production of plastics rose 9% to 25 Mt (27 million st) - on a volume basis, double all metals. Some 7% of petroleum goes to make petrochemicals including plastics. Imports of nonfuel mineral-based materials in 1987 were valued at $37 billion and exports at $24 billion. Imports supplied a significant proportion of total US consumption of several important mineral materials, including many classified as strategic and critical. In December, the Congress mandated that any major changes in stockpile goals be made only by law, and that the Department of Defense submit annually detailed stockpile supply/demand analyses. Concern about apartheid in South Africa continued, resulting in increasing interest about chromium, manganese, platinum-group metals, cobalt, vanadium, and gold. The National Critical Materials Council continued to monitor the US materials position. The Defense Production Act, authorizing priorities and allocations, supply expansions, voluntary agreements, and the National Defense Executive Reserve continues in effect through Sept. 30, 1989. Under the DPA, the US Bureau of Mines maintains the Emergency Minerals Administration. Further consultations were held with Canada to strengthen the North American defense industrial base. Coal production, 60% from open pits, rose 2% to 825 Mt (910 million st) valued at $21 billion. Nearly four-fifths was burned to generate 56% of US electricity. Exports included 42 Mt (51 million st) of metallurgical coal and 24 Mt (27 million st) of steam coal, with a total value of $3.3 billion. Domestic petroleum production fell 5% to 480 Mm' (3 billion bbl). Uranium mining, including recovery from phosphates, fell 4% to 5.9 kt (6500 st). Nonfuel minerals Major metals: Raw steel production - a major consumer of many minerals - rose 7% to 79 Mt (87 million st). The US economy continued to grow steadily in 1988, reaching an annual rate of $5 trillion in the last quarter (US trillion = 1012). The value of domestically processed mineral-based materi¬als rose 20% to $300 billion (US billion 109). The value of metals produced from US ores rose 40% to more than $10 billion, industrial minerals rose 6%' to $20 billion, and recycled scrap more than doubled to $10 billion. Increasing economic activity stimulated metal prices. Yearly lows and highs were 95 cents and $1.68 for copper, 52 cents, and $1.30 for aluminum, 34 cents and 42 cents for lead, and 43 cents and 75 cents for zinc. A number of mining and metal companies experienced significantly increased profitability. Consumer demand strongly affects mining because the US economy is relatively saturated with long-lived products. Consumer, mortgage, and Federal debt continued to rise. About 246 million US citizens already possess 170 million licensed motor vehicles and 100 million dwelling units. New car production remained at the 1987 level of 7.1 million units. Truck and bus production, however, rose 7% to 4.1 million units. New housing starts fell 7% to 1.5 million units. Imports supplied a significant proportion of total US consumption of several important mineral materials. By year-end, imports of crude and refined petroleum exceeded domestic crude oil production. Such imports cost $42 billion. Imports of nonfuel mineral-based materials were valued at $44 billion and exports at $35 billion. The US and Canada-the world's two largest trading partners-consummated a historic free trade agreement. In February, President Reagan transferred responsibility for stockpiling strategic and critical materials to the Secretary of Defense. And, in July, the GSA group that bought, stored, rotated, and sold stockpiled materials was transferred to the Defense Department's Defense Logistics Agency. Concern about apartheid in South Africa continued, resulting in increasing attention to chromium, manganese, platinum-group metals, cobalt, vanadium, and gold. The Defense Production Act, authorizing priorities and allocations, supply expansions, voluntary agreements, and the National Defense Executive Reserve, was amended to include provisions for averting harm to national security from foreign takeovers. The DPAct, in effect through September 1989, is now up for further extension. Under the Act, the US Bureau of Mines maintains the Emergency Minerals Administration. During the year, consultations were held with Canada to strengthen the North American Defense Industrial Base. Coal production, 60% from open pits, rose 5% to 870 Mt (960 million st). Nearly four-fifths was burned to generate 57% of US electricity. Exports included 56 Mt (62 million st) of metallur- gical coal and 29 Mt (32 million st) of steam coal, with a total value of $4 billion. Domestic petroleum produc¬tion fell 2% to 574 hm3 (3.6 billion bbl). Uranium mining, including recovery from phosphates, was unchanged at 5.9 kt (6500 st). The US economy grew steadily in 1989, reaching an annual rate of $5.3 trillion in the last quarter (US trillion=1012 ). The value of domestically processed, mineral-based materials rose 5% to $315 billion (US billion=109). The value of metals produced from US ores rose 14% to $11.6 billion, while industrial minerals rose 2% to $20.2 billion. Recycled scrap was valued at $10 billion. Increasing economic activity stimulated metal prices. Yearly lows and highs were $2.31 and $3.56/kg ($1.05 and $1.62 per lb) for copper, $1.58 and $2.57/kg (72 and $1.17 per lb) for aluminum, 77 and 97 cents/kg (35 cents and 44 cents per lb) for lead, and $1.58 and $2.09/kg (72 cents and 95 cents per lb) for zinc. Many mining and metal companies reported reasonable profits. Consumer demand strongly affects mining because the US economy is saturated with long-lived products. Consumer, mortgage, and Federal debt continued to rise. 250 million US citizens already possess 172 million licensed motor vehicles and 100 million dwelling units. New car production fell 4% to 6.8 million units, while truck and bus production fell 1 % to four million units. New housing starts fell 9% to 1.4 million units. Imports supplied a significant proportion of total US consumption of several important mineral materials. Imports of crude and refined petroleum costing $50 billion exceeded domestic crude oil production. President Bush expressed "strong concerns about this country becoming further dependent on foreign oil." And the Department of Energy held a series of hearings around the country to develop ideas for a "national energy strategy."

In the first half of the year, lessening of cold war tensions was welcome. But Iraq's invasion of Kuwait in the second half led to the Persian Gulf War in January and February 1991. This caused an oil shock that dampened the economy. So the US gross national product rose only 0.9% to $5,463 billion (US billion = 109). The buildup of military forces in the Persian Gulf area focused greater attention not only on petroleum but also on other strategic materials. The Department of Defense continued to review stockpile goals and to upgrade several mineral materials. In addition, the Bureau of Mines continued to maintain the standby Emergency Minerals Administration. The Defense Production Act, which authorizes priorities, alloca¬tions and supply expansion, lapsed on Oct. 20. So the Selective Service Act of 1967 became the authority for assuring that orders of the armed forces and defense atomic-energy programs were given priority treatment. Consumer demand strongly affects mining worldwide. US citizens carry significant debt, and large stocks of housing and consumer goods are already in place. Some 250 million persons have 188 million licensed motor vehicles and 100 million dwelling units. Consequently, new car production fell 11 %, to 6.1 million units. Truck and bus production fell 8%, to 3.7 million units and new private housing starts fell 13% to 1.2 million units.

Lingering effects of the 1990 oil shock that included overbuilding and corporate and individual financial distress caused the Gross Domestic Product to fall slightly to $5.67 billion (US billion = l09). With 254 million people - 697,000 in mining and petroleum - the US has more than 100 million dwelling units and 190 million licensed motor vehicles. New private housing starts fell 15% to one million units. New car production fell 11 % to 5.4 million units. Truck and bus production fell 8% to 3.4 million units. The inflation rate was 3%, while the prime rate of interest was 8.5%. The Producer Price Index (1982 = 100) changed as follows: -fuels and related products and power down 1% to 8l, • metals and metal products down 2% to 120, • chemicals and allied products up 2% to 126, and • non-metallic mineral products up to 2% to 117. Energy Imports of crude and refined petroleum, costing $50 billion, fell 5% to 2.8 billion bbl. Domestic petroleum production rose 1% to 3.6 billion bbl. Petroleum supplied about 39% of US energy, natural gas 24% and coal 22%. The National Energy Strategy was announced in February 1991. Its purpose is to encourage domestic production of fossil fuels and nuclear and renewable energy and to stimulate efficiencies in use. Congress continued to debate the strategy and took no action. Coal production fell 3% to 902 Mt (994 million st). About 60% of that came from surface operations. Seventy-eight percent of the total was used to generate electricity and 3% was coked.

In 1992, the United States economy grew at a rate of 2%. The Gross Domestic Product rose to $5,946 billion. With 257 million people - 635,000 in mining including petroleum - the United States has more than 100 million dwelling units and more than 190 million licensed motor vehicles. New private housing starts rose I 1 % to 1.2 million units. New car production rose 4% to 5.7 million units. Truck and bus production rose 20% to 4 million units. The rate of inflation was 3.5% and the prime rate of interest was 6.25%. The Producer Price Index (1982 =100) was relatively unchanged from 1991 as follows: fuels and related products and power 80, metals and metal products 119, chemicals and allied products 126 and nonmetallic mineral products 117. Energy Imports of crude and refined petroleum, costing $50 billion, rose 3% to 455 Mm3 (2.9 billion bbl). Domestic petroleum production fell 1 % to 582 Mm3 (3.5 billion bbl). Petroleum supplied about 41 % of US energy, natural gas 24% and coal 23%. Coal production, 60% from surface operations, rose 1 % to 914 Mt (1 billion st). About 78% was used to generate electricity and 3% was coked. Exports valued at $4 billion included 57 Mt (63 million st) of metallurgical coal and 39 Mt (43 million st) of steam coal. Ura¬nium mining, including recovery from phosphates, fell 18% to 3 kt (3300 st) U308.

In 1993, the United States' economy grew at a rate of about 3%. The Gross Domestic Product rose to $6.4 trillion. With more than 258 million people - 599,000 in mining including petroleum - the United States has more than 100 million dwelling units and more than 190 million licensed motor vehicles. New private housing starts rose 7% to 1.3 million units, new car production fell 3% to 5.5 million units and truck and bus production rose 21 % to 4.9 million units. The rate of inflation was under 3% and the prime rate of interest 6%. The Producer Price Index (1982 = 100) was unchanged from 1992 for fuels and re¬lated products and power at 80 and met¬als and metal products at 119, while chemicals and allied products rose 2% to 128 and non-metallic mineral prod¬ucts rose 2% to 120. The merchandise trade deficit rose 27% to $116 billion.

The overall success of a mining operation is directly impacted by the reliability and availability of mining equipment. Heavy-duty vehicles such as excavators and haul trucks are used for conveying of bulk material and improving such assets’ availability helps reduce costs, increase throughputs and improve safety (Ravande, 2022). If a mining operation’s key performance indicators (KPIs) are tied to operational performance, then overall equipment effectiveness (OEE) is an essential metric to track progress and to identify areas of improvement.

We formulate the notion of Mining 4.0, where we attempt to create an image of how the future might look from a miner’s perspective and how mining companies might navigate their way to a future that works for all miners.

Industry 4.0 offers new possibilities to combine increased productivity with stimulating workplaces in a good work environment. Used correctly, digitalization can create attractive jobs in safe control room environments, which provide space for the employee’s full expertise and creativity. This is true also for the mining industry. But, to succeed, it is important to analyze the development from a worker’s perspective. What will happen to their work? What skills will be needed in the mine of tomorrow? We must also consider the risks, such as privacy issues, increased stress, and work-life boundaries. These questions must be understood if we are to create workplaces that can attract a young and diverse workforce to tomorrow’s mining industry. In this article, we try to illustrate what the new technology can mean for the individual miners. We formulate the notion of Mining 4.0 (Industry 4.0 in the mining industry), where we try to create an image of how the future might look from a miner’s perspective and how mining companies may navigate their way to a future that works for all miners. To illustrate the range of possible outcomes, we formulate two scenarios: one utopian and one dystopic. At the end of our article, we bring forward six recommendations that can be considered a beginning of a road map for the human side of Mining 4.0.

After a good year in 1979-strong mineral demand, adequate prices for most metals, minimal labor problems-1980 was not so good. The US produced $24.8 billion worth of nonfuel minerals last year, up 3.5% from 1979, according to preliminary US Bureau of Mines figures. But the $800 million increase was the smallest annual gain since 1977 and reflected reduced auto and construction industry demand, strikes, and energy shortages. Preliminary figures for 68 minerals show that production of 42 decreased, 25 increased, and one was unchanged. Production of 11 of 21 US-produced minerals was up. Noteworthy mineral events in 1980 included a copper industry strike, increased gold and silver prices, troubles in the iron ore and uranium industries, discussion about a US nonfuels mineral policy, and corporate interest in mining companies as merger targets. Recessionary conditions experienced by the Western world in 1980 resulted in a slowdown in new mine development, evident in the relative scarcity of major new base metal projects. This could lead to short term supply/demand anomalies within the next few years which, in turn, could have a significant effect on metal prices, according to Mining Magazine (Jan. 1981). World Mining (Sept. 1980) noted that US mining strength is in open pit operations. A much lower tonnage is mined underground and is centralized in trona, uranium, lead, zinc, molybdenum, potash and, to a lesser extent, copper. The most notable increase in new underground mines has been in Wyoming's trona district where new mines are being developed and production will increase, the magazine said.

Obtaining financing for mining and exploration projects has been difficult for the last several years, particularly for junior companies. Today, though, the purse strings of investors appear to be loosening, leaving the industry with many questions about financing in the coming years. How have capital markets and exploration spending changed? Are there signs of improvement? Where has capital been raised in private, public markets, stock exchanges, private equity, etc.? What companies successfully raised capital in the last year? How are they spending it? How are traditional and alternative funding sources investing in mining? What are the issues mining companies need to know about when tapping alternative sources of capital? Those were some of the questions that were answered at the Current Trends in Mining Finance conference, sponsored by SME and the New York Section April 26-28. Held in New York City, the conference attracted 115 professionals who work on the finance and economic side of the mining industry. Three of the conference organizers talked with Mining Engineering about the conference and the state of financing in the industry today. Tim Alch (TA) is managing director with Behre Dolbear & Co. Finally, extensive subsidence above the northern end of the orebody could have disturbed permanent surface installations and jeopardised a possible future open cut. The full implications of this ambitious strategy were not apparent in the early years. Now, after 12 years of production the benefits are being realised and they can be weighed against the costs. Probably the most interesting result which comes from this analysis is the significance of cutoff grades and dilution factors in balancing mining and filling rates.

Finally, extensive subsidence above the northern end of the orebody could have disturbed permanent surface installations and jeopardised a possible future open cut. The full implications of this ambitious strategy were not apparent in the early years. Now, after twelve years of production the benefits are being realised and they can be weighed against the costs. Probably the most interesting result which comes from this analysis is the significance of cutoff grades and dilution factors in balancing mining and filling rates.

THE Columbia Chemical Division of the Pittsburgh Plate Glass Co. is at Barberton, Ohio, 35 miles south of Cleveland. For many years large tonnages of limestone have been brought to the Barberton plant from distant points. The stone is here burnt in vertical kilns, the resultant product then hydrated and the hydrated lime used in chemical processing. To eliminate the expense of these shipments, the company decided to investigate a limestone bed known to exist on company property at Barberton, where the stone is used. The bed lay at a depth of more than 2000 ft. and was known locally as the "Deep Lime." Chemical analyses of sludge from churn-drill holes made some years ago proved that the limestone was of sufficient purity to warrant diamond-drill exploration. Four diamond-drill holes were put down at well-spaced intervals, to represent fairly an area of four miles by one mile. Cores logged as to chemical and physical conditions were found to compare closely, and to corroborate the earlier evidence that the limestone was of superior quality for chemical use. A plant of 300 tons per hour was subsequently decided upon. SITE The yard at the chemical plant was already so congested that location of the projected mine within its area could not be considered. Eventually a site was selected 2 miles northwest of the plant, near the main line of the Erie Railroad. Here 412 acres were owned outright by the company and stone rights were obtained on 250 additional acres. This location required a transportation line of nearly 2 miles (8800 ft.), crossing two major highways, and to avoid interruption of deliveries to the plant, overpasses were planned. GEOLOGY The limestone in the immediate vicinity lies about 2200 ft. below the surface. Geologists* identify this stone as Delaware of Devonian age. It is overlain by 18 ft. of unconsolidated (sand and gravel), 100 ft. of water-bearing sandstone, and finally 2080 ft. of shale into which sandstone in thin layers is interbedded. The contact of shale and limestone is abrupt, flat-lying and very pronounced. Berea sandstone, often found at 520 ft., is absent, but Euclid sandstone was encountered, together with a seepage of oil and a small amount of methane gas. The limestone bed itself is 345 ft. thick, and overlies 200 ft. of gypsum. The lower part becomes dolomitic as it approaches the gypsum. A detailed study of the drill cores indicates that the upper 50 ft, are highest in lime and reasonably low in silica. The physical make-up shows several separating cherty layers.
