This paper presents the results of a laboratory investigation aiming to verify the concept of co-mingling of waste rock with layers of compacted tailings. Overall, co-mingling is expected to delay the onset and reduce the magnitude of acid mine drainage (AMD) production in waste rock. To denionstrate the efficiency of the method proposed, five different column tests have been set-up. Columns were fed with deionized water at the top and drainage waters were collected and analyzed. Bacteria counts were done on the tailings and waste rock after the column tests. Permeability in saturated conditions and capillary parameters were measured for the tailings. The results obtained show that the co-mingling method would be effective in mitigating AMD by maintaining nearly water-saturated conditions in compacted tailings, thus reducing oxygen supply in waste rock by preventing thermal air convection and minimizing oxygen advection and diffusion.

Deposits of metals in only slightly disturbed strata have been attributed to sedimentation processes contemporary with deposition of the strata. Recently this origin has been extended' to a greater variety' of deposits and local enrichment has been attributed to selective remobilization of metallic minerals in the host stratum. Effects attending metallization and deformation, and exact age' of the metallization are compiled to establish the sequence of events in ore deposit histories in order to clarify importance of remobilization within a formation relative to introduction from an outside source into an fav¬orable host. The pertinence respectively of deposit; origin and geometry to the work of the mining geologist is reviewed. Dwarf faunas in the Clinton iron ore, Tully pyrite bed and Rammelsberg deposit, indicate abnormal metal ions in the sedimentary environment. Slight¬ly disturbed strata are host rocks in the Swedish Kolm, Timna, Kupferschieffer, and White Pine deposit; the latter two have ore only in conjunction with tectonic structures.

"Metal matrix composite (MMC) with composition of Al-4.Swt.%Cu reinforced by IOwt.%TiB2 or ISwt.%SiC particulate has been successfully fabricated using powder metallurgy technique. Disk, compression and beam specimens were prepared with (a) layered structure containing ductile Al-4.Swt.%Cu with brittle Al-4.Swt.%Cu/TiB2 or Al-4.Swt.%Cu/SiC layers, and (b) homogenous constituent with composition of Al-4.Swt.%Cu/lOwt.%TiB2' The specimens for the fracture toughness measurement were built through three ductile-brittle-ductile alternating layers. For the beam specimens, the layers were built through brittle-ductile-brittle sequence. The brittle layer consisted of Al-4.S%Cu with fixed amount of reinforcement. Fracture toughness testing revealed an increase for layered composites although the total amount of the reinforcement was the same for all disk specimens. The increase in fracture toughness is due to the existence of ductile layers which manifests a strong influence on delaying the occurrence of fracture. It acts as a barrier to resist the propagation of crack and hence increases the fracture toughness of the layered MMC specimens, Delamination in the beam specimens was observed to be due to shear stresses. Fracture surfaces of both disk, compress and beam specimens were characterized using the SEM. IntroductionMechanical and thermal properties can be achieved by the incorporation of refractory secondary phases to constrain the plastic flow of the matrix in a metal matrix composite (MMC). The size of the reinforcement particulate incorporated must be in the range larger than the dislocation cell size and strongly bonded to the matrix (I). Particulate reinforced metal matrix composites hence provide high modulus, improved wear resistance and strength (2-4). Because of the incorporation of refractory phases which are generally brittle, the major limitation in the mechanical properties of MMCs is their limited ductility in comparison to their base metals. Cracks normally initiate from the reinforcement and voids (4, 5). Due to the lack of ductility, cracks propagate rapidly with increase in load. As a result, the interactions between reinforcement particles and propagating cracks have recently been of great research interest (6). In addition, volume fraction of reinforcement and aging condition of the matrix significantly affect the mechanical behaviour of MMCs. In the case of AI-3.5%Cu reinforced with varying volume fractions of SiC particulate, it has been found that the probability of particle fracture increased with increasing volume fraction of reinforcement (7)."

The layered co-mingling method involves the disposal of waste rock with the addition, at predefined construction stages, of layers of dewatered mine tailings. The resulting waste structure displays bulk properties that are more favourable to acid rock drainage (ARD) control than the constituent materials alone. A laboratory test programme was conducted to examine the potential of this method. Columns containing different configurations of waste rock and tailings were percolation leached for 40 weeks and the leachates examined for various parameters. In the short term the chemical reactions that result from the introduction of dewatered tailings into rock waste can significantly improve the quality of the drainage. Columns with co-mingled material produced leachate with pH levels of 8, whereas leachate from the control column containing waste rock alone had a pH of 4. Larger-scale field tests are planned to determine the effect of the disposal method over the longer term

The suitable selection materials that are able to withstand high levels of wear better than low alloy and carbon steel grades that are commonly used in industry is very important to improve the quality and increase productivity. UNS S32750 tubes were demonstrably superior to low alloy and carbon steels when used in Laying Head Pipe system regarding tubes lifetime, reducing replacement, production interruptions and increasing reliability.

THE primary objective in laying track in panel sections is to reduce the number of track laborers required. This is possible because the work is mechanized. Moreover, because the work is mechanized and each of the operations needs only a few men, and each is self-contained, the work can be carried on at night as well as in daylight; therefore, the method provides a means of preparing tracks on more than one shift. The laying of tracks in open pits and quarries in panel sections is not new but new methods have been made possible by the introduction of new types of equipment. The purpose of this paper is to describe the methods that are followed in' the Morenci open pit. GENERAL MINING OPERATIONS Full-scale ore production at Morenci is about 50,000 tons daily. The normal yearly output of ore and waste is 32,000,000 tons, of which 30,000,000 tons is handled by rail haulage. This requires the building of approximately 47 miles of loading and other temporary tracks during a 12 months' period (Fig I). Broken ore and waste, is loaded., into 90-ton capacity dump cars with 5-cu-yd full-revolving electric shovels. Shovel banks are uniformly 50 ft high:. They are blasted- with churn drill holes, and the broken material from a blast is loaded out with two shovel cuts, the first one being called (locally) the "splatter" cut and the second one the "clean-up" or "face-up" cut. When a shovel is making its clean-up cut, the loading track is about 70 ft from the toe of the bank and, under normal conditions, a bank is blasted against it without removing the track. It is thus evident that each track is used for two shovel cuts before relocation is necessary, inasmuch as a single position serves for both the clean-up cut prior to blasting and for the splatter cut following the blast. The normal advance of a solid bench by a single blast is 40 ft (Fig 2). PREPARATION OF PANEL GRADE In preparation of panel grades bulldozers and rooters are used for the bulk of the work and an auto-patrol road grader for the final stage. At Morenci, bulldozers have always been used for track-grade preparation, but before the introduction of the other two types of equipment grades were uneven and irregular at best, and always necessitated a big gang of track laborers to hand-block under the ties with rocks after a track was laid into place. High blocking also made poor track because of instability and caused frequent derailments. Under these conditions derailments were generally bad as re-railing became difficult. Much track was torn up and many ties broken in the process. The inadequacy of the hand-blocked track, together with the inefficiency of hand blocking, constantly pointed to the desirability of reducing the amount of labor required, so various means were tried to improve conditions, such as wood

The SX-EW operation at Morenci includes three electrowinning tankhouses. Stainless cathode blanks require the use of insulating plastic edge strips, which typically have a service life of 1-2 years, therefore, regular replacement of edge strips is a fact of life in tankhouse operations. The largest tankhouse, Central, converted from starter sheets to stainless steel cathode blanks in 1999. During the first year of stainless blank operation at Central Tankhouse, the initial installation edge strips started failing at accelerated rates and there was a sudden need to replace edge strips and repair between 350 and 400 cathode blanks per day. This paper details the design and building of cathode repair shops at the Morenci tankhouses, including choice of equipment and layout design. The objective was to increase efficiency through the use of cathode handling equipment and flow of material.

"The interest in the use of sensor-based particle ore sorting has increased significantly with the recent advances in the sorting technologies and higher capacities per unit. This technology has the potential to provide great value in processing lower grade ores from the mine whilst delivering higher grades to the mill as well as in upgrading waste rock into ore. Typically, the focus is on the amenability of the ore to ore-sorting and associated reductions in the consumption of energy, water and consumables. However, layout has a significant impact on the installed cost of a concentrator and the layout impacts from fitting an ore-sorting circuit into the concentrator plan need to be carefully considered. This paper examines layout considerations that play an important role in ore sorting projects. These include additional crushing and screening requirement, transportation of the rejected material back to the waste stockpile (mine fleet requirements) and effects on concentrator footprints.INRODUCTION Ore sorting has been practiced throughout history with an early report by Agricola in 1556. Metallic and non-metallic minerals were extracted from rocks by laboriously breaking them with hammers and picks and hand-picking selected material with higher grade off a table. The concept has not changed but the sorting technology has evolved significantly over the last 20 years. Ore sorting is usually a dry process in which a portion of the material is rejected based on mineral properties and/or grade. The methods used for sensing ore particles cover a large range of physical properties. A variety of sensors are available that differ on the discrimination technique that is used, which include: photometry, radiometry, conductivity, magnetism, microwave, X-ray transparency: X-ray transparency and luminescence and UV fluorescence (Sivamohan and Forssberg, 1991; Wotruba, 2006). There are two main ore sorting techniques: particle ore sorting and bulk ore sorting. According to Nadolski et al (2018), the potential for sorting is determined though analysis of grade heterogeneity within the orebody (greater heterogeneity represents more opportunity to add value to a project) at the scale of the intended sorting unit size."

Interesting facts have been proved regarding gas emissions and roof. supi;iort. The two underground mines are compared, showing the variance in conditions already experienced. Programs currently in operation to improve standards and production are: the training of miners, maintenance men and officials; experiments in floor consolidation and continuing roof support trials; and the effect of comparative stability of working crews on the performance of the operation."

To provide coal operators with an easy-to-use stress control design procedure to minimize coal mine bumps during room-and-pillar retreat mining conducted with available continuous mining machine technology. Approach The goal of this U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) re¬search was to facilitate safe and efficient room-and-pillar retreat mining of bump-prone coalbeds by limiting coalbed stress adjacent to expanding gob areas through variation of section layouts. The first step was design of total-extraction pillars and their associated pillar-extraction plans. The second step was development of a coalbed strength model. The third step was development of stress limit design criteria. The fourth and final step was development of a methodology to estimate the magnitude and distribution of development and abutment loads apllied to the pillar line. The linear geometry of unlimited-width sections allowed for the accomplishment of step four with the tributary-area and linear shear-angle concepts. Increasing overburden depths required limited-width sections separated by barrier pillars to control stress within total-extraction panels. The accomplishment of step four with limited-width section designs required prediction of abutment load distributions for rectangular gobs and apportionment of these loads over mixed pillar sizes. A parametric study of the complicated interaction of various combinations of overburden depths, total-extraction panel widths, and abutment pillar widths was conducted with the USBM-developed boundary-element program MULSIM/NL.

Poland in time of transition had been dealing with the remnants of the previous regime ? particularly in the field of environmental protection. The burden left was tremendous and there was a need for fast and effective tools for improving the environment. The idea of environmental protection had been supported by the introduction of a new environmental policy that underlined the importance of sustainable development in industry in the beginning of 1990s. This policy introduced high environmental fees and fines ? a concept not very popular in Europe in that time ? and good only for a country in transition to boost the protection of the environment. While this policy had its role to play, its role is now completed. It is time to move forward, especially when these environmental charges affect the international competitiveness of industries so much, and at the same time have virtually no influence on environmental protection investments any more.

It appears that Utah is about to add another mining district to its already impressive roster. This time it is the Great Salt Lake, whose high-mineral content waters are being subjected to intensive study aimed toward the recovery of potassium, magnesium and lithium compounds by solar evaporation techniques. Among the firms conducting such experiments is Lithium Corporation of America, which, in a joint venture with West Germany's Salzdetfurth A.G., is operating evaporating ponds and running engineering tests at a site near Little Mountain, about ten miles west of Ogden. Here, on the clay flats along the northern portion of the lake, LCA holds leases and options totalling about 55,000 acres in the Bear River Basin.

Several different production processes are currently used worldwide, and the magnesium production scenario is changing rapidly, with Chinese production increasingly dominating the world market. For the purpose of this paper, a novel approach to Life Cycle Assessment was applied, in which Material Flow Accounting and energy-based methods (Embodied Energy, Exergy and Emergy Analyses) are integrated and complemented, with a detailed description of the environmental hazards associated with emissions from all the different processes.

The liquid crystal display (LCD) are currently known by its vast application in electro ? electronic devices, amongst them can be detached the devices of TV, laptops, electronic date, calculators and even though the mobile telephones (mobiles). The mobiles are changed more frequent of the TV for example, this happens due to the technology advance. With the constantly mobile exchange, the batteries, printed circuit board and liquid crystal display accumulation its become an environmental problem. To minimize the environmental impacts caused by mobile telephones residues are considered the segregation process of the LCDs main components, to goal to recover the recycle material. This process involves the use of treatment ore techniques with disc, hammers and balls mills. The process with best efficiency (about 98%) of LCD glass release was the hammers mill. The glass recovered can be used in the glass recycling and the sand substitution in the production of concrete blocks.

The concept of sustainable development is be-coming present in the policies of increasing number of industries and governments. The complexity affects not only production aspects, but has also special relevance for environmental decision making. Not only producers are re-evaluating the services they expect from the environment and concomitantly increasing their willingness to sacrifice other consumption in favour of enhanced environmental services, but the character of environmental issues is becoming more complex as well. Incomplete information, uncertainty, system wide change, trans-frontier impacts, current causes that have far reaching future effects, irreversibility, and possibilities of catastrophic change all complicate the environmental decision making process. Non-ferrous metals production, due to a relatively low level of metals content in ore, results in generating huge amounts of tailings, exceeding usually 90% of the mine output. They must be stored in special facilities, which have the significant impact on the environment both during tailing management facilities (TMF) operation and after their closure. One of the most essential impacts of operating and closed TMFs is their eolic activity, displaying in worsening air quality, aero-sanitary conditions in the neigh-boring villages and contamination of soils close to the facility by heavy metals.

"This paper describes the history of LDV measurements employed in research involving gas-solid flows. Much of the discussion deals with measurement techniques employed to obtain separate and simultaneous solid and gas phase velocities. Also, LDV based measurement techniques that arc used to obtain particle size and concentration information in conjunction with the velocity measurements arc presented.INTRODUCTIONThere are numerous examples of industrial processes in which the motion of a solid or droplet dispersed phase in a suspending gas phase is critically important. The applications range from spray droplets injected into combustion chambers to the understanding of the time release mechanisms of particles generated by dissolving pharmaceutical tablets. In many of these processes, the heat, mass, and/or momentum transfer between the dispersed phase and the suspending fluid arc the items of interest. In the past, much of the phenomena were characterized by empirical models derived from flow averaged measurements. Gradual developments in laser Doppler velocimetry (LDV), have provided researchers with an unobtrusive measurement technique capable of obtaining the particle size velocity and concentration with good spatial resolution.In the two decades that LDV instrumentation has been available, most of the uses have concentrated on single phase fluid flow measurements. The light scattered from seed particles small enough to follow complex fluid motions, including turbulence, is converted into velocity information. While the utility of this instrument in single phase flows has been demonstrated beyond question, the use of LDV in gas-solid multiphase flows has had a more gradual development. The measurements ·of interest in these flow regimes are usually the velocity of the suspending fluid as well as that of the dispersed particulate phase. Early investigators were quick to see the potential of this instrument for measurements in gas-solid flows. The interest soon expanded to the development of instruments that could also simultaneously measure particle size and concentration within a two-phase flow field.This paper tracks the historical development of LDV technology as applied to gas-solid flows. The techniques to measure particle velocity, size, and concentration arc treated in separate sections although much of the development occurred simultaneously. Finally, some unique applications conducted at West Virginia University and other locations will be discussed in the application section."

Le Centre de Recherches minérales (CRM), qui est un organisme de recherche appliquée du ministère de l'Energie et des Ressources du Québec, a été créé en 1969, dans le but de procurer un support scientifique et technique à l'industrie dans le domaine des mines et de la métallurgie. Pour atteindre ses objectifs, le CRM met à la disposition de l'industrie un personnel spécialisé et compétent dont une quarantaine d'ingénieurs et de scientifiques. Etant donné la nature même de l'industrie minérale, ce personnel est très versé dans l'étude des problèmes diversifiés des domaines de la technologie minière, du traitement des minerais, de la métallurgie extractive et de l'analyse minérale. Ce Centre de recherches met également à la disposition de l'industrie une usine-pilote permettant de reproduire les résultats du laboratoire au moyen d'un appareillage de type industriel, d'obtenir des échantillons en quantité suffisante pour une exploration du marché et de familiariser du personnel avec les opérations normales de l'industrie. Certaines de ses contributions récentes au développement de l'industrie minérale du Québec seront présentées.

"RÉSUMÉ Le diagramme ternaire Al2O3-Sr-Y est un nouvel outil servant à l’exploration de gisements de sulfures massifs volcanogènes (SMV) archéens. Le diagramme permet de discriminer entre les roches volcaniques à minéralisations à zinc dominant (domaine Zn+) et celles à minéralisations à cuivre dominant (domaine Cu+), ainsi que les roches volcaniques ayant subi une chloritisation hydrothermale pouvant aboutir à la formation de chloritites associées aux cheminées d’altération (domaine Cl+). Ces trois domaines délimitent des zones d’influence géochimique ou d’empreintes hydrothermales résiduelles ou fossiles produites par les cellules de convection hydrothermales générées par des magmas. Le diagramme permet aux sociétés d’exploration de déterminer de façon peu coûteuse la fertilité potentielle des roches volcaniques archéennes en ayant recours à leurs bases de données et aux résultats de leurs analyses de terrain, sans aucune manipulation des données. Le diagramme ne s’applique pas aux SMV aurifères.ABSTRACT The tertiary diagram Al2O3-Sr-Y is a new tool to explore Archean volcanogenic massive sulphide (VMS) deposits. The diagram can be used to discriminate between the volcanic rocks where zinc is the dominant mineralization (Zn+ domain) and the rocks where copper is the dominant mineralization (Cu+ domain), as well as the volcanic rocks that were subjected to hydrothermal chloritization that could have led to the formation of chloritites associated with alteration chimneys (Cl+ domain). These three domains define the zones of geochemical influence, or residual or fossil hydrothermal footprints produced by hydrothermal convection cells generated by magmas. Exploration companies can apply the diagram to determine, at low cost, the potential fertility of the Archean volcanic rocks by using their databases and the results of their field analyses, without any data manipulation. The diagram does not apply to gold-bearing VMS deposits."

"RESUMELe gisement d 'uranium de Cigar Lake, dans la région de l'Athabasca au nord du Saskatchewan, fut découvert en mai 1981 par Cogema Canada Ltée, opérant pour Ie compte de la ""Waterbury Lake Joint Venture"".Le corps minéralisé. qui est dépourvu de toute expression directe en surface, est situé a la discordance entre les met sédiments du wottaston Group (Protérozoïque inférieur ou Aphébien) et les grès de l 'Athabasca (Protérozoïque moyen ou Hélikien), à une profondeur de 410 a450 m.Fin 1984, Ie gisement était reconnu par 105 sondages minéralisés repartis sur une longueur de 1800 m, pour une largeur comprise entre 25 et 105 m. 11 se présente sous forme d’une lentille aplatie de 5 a30 m de puissance, et montre une remarquable continuité d'ensemble. Une ride ou bombement topographique de la discordance est associée au gisement surtoute sa longueur.A l'échelle régionale, le corps minéralisé à est associe à un corridor structural d’orientation est-ouest, a l'intérieur duquel des facies particuliers aténdance blast mylonitique sont développes dans les formations métapolitiques agraphite du socle métamorphique. Il est entouré par un halo d'altération très important, caractériser Ie développement de minéraux argileux alumino-magnesiens (illite-chlorite).La minéralisation est située, pour la plus grande part, dans les grès d'Athabasca, et se compose essentiellement d'uraninite et de sulfo-arseniures de nickel et de cobalt,De nombreux levés géochimiques et géophysiques ont été effectues dans la région de Cigar Lake. Aucune anomalie ne peut être associée directement au corps minéralise, mais la combinaison des données en provenance de plusieurs sources s’est révélée fort utile au niveau de l’interprétation géologique régionale et de la définition des cibles de sondages a l'intérieur des zones reconnues favorables.Le gisement de Cigar Lake présente de nombreuses analogies avec plusieurs des gites classiques de la région de l'Athabasca; il est caractérise en particulier par l'intensité des phénomènes d’altération et la présence de minéralisations extrêmementriches.En 1984, les réserves géologiques globales estimées par géostatistique sur I ‘amas minéralise principal s 'élevaient a 110 000 tonnes d'uranium, aune teneur moyenne de 12.2%, avec une précision de 25% à l'intervalle de confiance de 95%.ABSTRACTThe Cigar Lake uranium deposit, in the Athabasca area of North Saskatchewan, was discovered in May 1981 by Cogema Canada LId., as operator of the Waterbury Lake Joint Venture. The deposit, which is devoid of direct surface expression, is located at the unconformity between the Lower Proterozoic (Aphebian) Wollaston Group meta-sediments and the Middle Proterozoic (Helikian) Athabasca sands tone, at a depth of 410 m to 450 m below surf ace.AI the end of 1984, the deposit had been defined by 105 mineralized holes over a length of 1800 m and a width of between 25 m and 105 m. It has the shape of a flat-lying lens 5 m to 30 m thick and shows a remarkable longitudinal and latera continuity from the information obtained to date. A well-defined bulge of the unconformity underlies the mineralized zone over its entire length.The deposit appears to be controlled by an east-west-trending structure within which a particular rock facies (""augen gneiss"") has developed in the graphitic metapelites of the Wollaston Group. It is surrounded by a strong alteration halo affecting both sandstone and basement, characterized by extensive development of Mg-A I rich clay minerals (illite-chlorite).The mineralization is hosted principally by the Athabasca sandstone, and consists mainly of uraninite and sulfo-arsenides of nickel and cobalt.Numerous geochemical and geophysical surveys have been carried out in the Cigar Lake area, and no specific geochemical or geophysical anomaly can be directly associated with the mineralized body, although there may be locally a good coincidence. "RESUMELe gisement Silidor représente la dernière découverte effectuée dans le camp minier de Rouyn-noranda (fin 1985). Située à 5 km à I' ouest-nord-ouest de Rouyn-Noranda, ce gisement aurifère doit être mis en exploitation au cours du mois d’avril 1990. 11 est constitué par plusieurs facies minéralises comprenant une tonalité, un dyke mafique, une brèche carbonatée et par une veine de quartz. L’or se présente en particules très fines associées ou non à la pyrite. La zone d’altération hematitisee se développe sur une largeur de 30m environ de chaque cote de la veine. ABSTRACTThe Silidor ore deposit, located 5km WNW of Rouyn-Noranda, is the latest discovery made in the Rouyn-Noranda mining camp. Discovered at the end of 1985, this gold deposit will begin production in the spring of 1990. The deposit comprises several facies including a tonalite, a mafic dyke, a carbonated breccia and quartz vein. Gold is present as very fine grains, associated or not with pyrite. A 30m wide hematized alteration zone is developed on both sides of the structure. A structural analysis shows that the mineralization took place along a NNW oriented tension zone that resulted from the interaction of two dextral shear zones, oriented N270 and N300 respectively. The diluted ore reserves are estimated at4,78 Mt at 5,4 g/t down to a depth of 700m."
