A large number and a wide variety of chemical reagents are used in flotation processes for wettability and Eh control, particle agglomeration/dispersion and bubble stability. A historical account of the use of flotation reagents through the years since flotation was introduced as a viable and economic process for the concentration of sulfide minerals is given and a review of old and modern postulates of their interaction with minerals is presented. Although the results of surface and colloid chemistry studies with well characterized mineral/flotation reagent systems have advanced our understanding of the role played by these chemicals in the flotation process, many questions remain unanswered. Moreover, new flotation reagents are needed to solve the challenge posed by the treatment of problematic-type ores and fuel deposits that have increasingly become the source of our raw and energy materials. Because of the depletion of high-grade and relatively easy-to-process ores, flotation scientists and engineers are confronted with finding more specific and selective flotation chemicals to effectively and economically concentrate minerals. The development of new flotation reagents is vital for cleaning fine coal and processing polysulfide, polymetallic ores, and mixed oxide/sulfide ores.

THREE mills are now operated by the Consolidated Mining & Smelting Co. of Canada, Ltd:: (1) The Sullivan concentrator, Chapman, B. C. (near Kimberley, B. C.), (2) the St. Eugene concentrator, Moyie, B. C., and (3) the Tadanac (customs) concen-trator, Trail, B. C. Differential flotation is the only concentration method employed in all three plants. Tables are used for pilot work only. Flotation equip-ment and control are similar in the three mills, and the flow sheets at the St. Eugene and Tadanac mills, while much simpler, are modeled after that of the Sul-livan concentrator. Successful differential flotation of Sullivan ore com-menced in the spring of 1920, in the pilot concentrator at Trail. During 1920, 193,804 tons were treated by this process. This operation continued without interrup-tion and with steady growth. For the first 7 months of . 1923, which concluded the pilot plant operation, ap-proximately 1100 tons were treated daily. I believe the Sunnyside plant of the United States Smelting &. Refining Co. was the only successful and large scale operation practising differential flotation prior to 1920. in North America. The Sullivan ore, because of its high iron content, was quite a different problem from that at Sunnyside. The entire tonnage of Sullivan ore had to be separated into three sulfide concentrate products-lead concentrate, zinc concentrate and iron concentrate. The choice and arrangement of equipment, and the original flow sheet for the Sullivan concentrator were controlled by the results of the exhaustive pilot mill test. These covered a continuous period of 3 1/2 years and involved the treatment of 1,076,368 tons of Sullivan ore. Satisfactory recoveries are made from feed; 11.0 per cent lead and 7.5 per cent zinc in the form of lead concentrate containing 69 per cent lead, 4.5 per cent zinc, and zinc concentrate containing 3.0 per cent lead and 49 per cent zinc. (The pure zinc mineral in Sulli-van ore is marmatite, 'containing approximately 54.5 per cent zinc and 10 per cent iron. It is apparent, there-fore, that 49 percent concentrate is high grade for this particular ore.)

An overview of flotation reagents used in sulfide and non-sulfide separations, from an industrial perspective, is given in this presentation to highlight the current applications knowledge. The historical and theoretical aspects, which are well documented in numerous books and reviews, will only be highlighted, when necessary, to support the theme of this paper, viz critical analysis of reagent research, design, selection and optimisation with an emphasis on relevance to plant needs and practice. The three types of flotation reagents; viz collectors, frothers and modifiers, used currently in the industry are briefly reviewed; pitfalls and gaps, arising from somewhat arbitrary and reductionistic practice in reagent applications, are identified; and the impact of environmental regulations on current and future reagent development is discussed. The importance of frothers and modifiers, which have received less overall attention than collectors, is highlighted. The need for a rational, holistic (or ætotal systemÆ, ætop-downÆ) approach for reagent design, selection and optimisation is discussed with a view to provide remedies for pitfalls and a platform for filling gaps in reagent chemistry and applications, and to develop reagent technology that can deliver robust solutions to plant needs. "A limited series of laboratory batch flotation tests was conducted on a suite of calcium-ferrite-based slags made in laboratory smelting trials. The smelting tests were conducted as part of a wider CSIRO Minerals’ research project aimed at developing a single-stage continuous copper-making process. The objective of the flotation work was to maximise copper recovery and iron rejection from slags made in the process.The slags treated included a reduced low copper slag, an oxidised high copper slag composite, and a very reduced low copper self-pulverising slag. The copper content of the slags varied from 2.9% to 14% Cu. The copper was present as metallic copper, oxide copper and copper-calcium ferrite phases with the phase mix related to smelting conditions. The slags were crushed, ground, wet-screened at 355 or 210 µm to remove coarse metallic particles of copper, and floated at natural pH (about pH 11) using reagents and conditions appropriate for the selective recovery of the copper phases.In rougher/scavenger tests on the reduced low copper and self-pulverising slags copper recoveries above 92% were obtained with copper enrichment ratios varying between 2.3 and 2.9. For the oxidised high copper slag copper recoveries were poorer - only 47% of the copper was recovered with an enrichment ratio of 3.3. The presence of the slow floating copper-ferrite phases in the slags limited further (selective) copper recovery. Ageing of the high copper slag, that is, a significant delay between grinding and flotation, resulted in a deterioration of the copper flotation response.The critical parameter affecting the flotation of copper from direct converting slags was found to be the form of the copper in the slag. Slags containing a higher proportion of the more desirable form of copper for flotation will provide the best opportunity for high copper recoveries to be consistently obtained, allowing improvements in the economics of the overall copper-making process."

"Over the past few years CSIRO Minerals has been conducting research aimed at developing a continuous copper converting process to replace the traditional two-stage batch process that is currently used to produce blister copper. Sirosmelt type reactors and calcium-ferrite (lime-based) slags have been used rather than the conventional iron silicate slags. The research work has now been extended to focus on the development of a single-stage continuous copper making process (so-called direct copper converting) in which copper concentrates are converted to low-sulfur blister copper in a single step, that is the smelting and converting steps occur in one continuous stage.One feature of the direct copper converting process is that copper losses to the slag phase can be high, meaning the slag produced needs to be treated to recover the copper value. The feasibility of the whole copper making process will most likely depend on the efficiency and cost effectiveness of the copper recovery stage. Flotation has been identified as the most economical option to recover the copper from direct copper converting slags where it has been estimated that a copper recovery from the slag of above 90% is required to make the overall single stage copper making process economically feasible.A limited series of laboratory batch flotation tests was conducted on a suite of calcium-ferrite-based slags made in laboratory smelting trials. The objectives of this work were to develop a robust flotation process to maximise the copper recovery and iron rejection from slags made in the process, and to establish operating conditions for future continuous flotation pilot plant trials.The slags treated included a reduced low copper slag, an oxidised high copper slag composite, and a very reduced low copper self-pulverising slag. The copper content of the slags varied from 2.9% to 14% Cu and the CaO/Fe ratio varied between 0.30 and 0.54. In general, the higher the copper content the more oxidised the slag. The copper was present as metallic copper, oxide copper and copper-calcium ferrite phases with the phase mix related to smelting conditions. The slags were crushed, ground, wet-screened at 355 or 210 µm to remove coarse metallic particles of copper, and floated at natural pH (about pH 11) using reagents and conditions appropriate for the selective recovery of the copper phases. Reagent additions were typically 200 g/t KEX and 500 g/t Na2S.9H2O and the grind size was generally a P80 of about 40 µm."

A process was developed to recover coal, clays and pyrite from coal wastes. The process consists of fine grinding followed by coal flotation and pyrite flotation leaving the clays in the flotation pulp. A bituminous coal refuse, containing l0% S-30% C*, was treated by this method to yield a coal product containing 4% sulfur, 10% ash; a pyrite product containing 45% sulfur (84% FeS2), 1% carbonaceous material and a clay product containing 2% sulfur (3.5% FeS2). The coal yield was about 89%. The pyrite yield was about 77%. The process steps may be entirely flotation, or gravity separation (hydrocyclone) may be used to increase the pyrite: coal ratio in the flotation feed. Cost estimation shows a profit of $2.28 per ton of low pyrite grade refuse (Labor, maintenance, overhead and plant depreciation were not included). The development of this process consisted of three parts: 1) exploratory tests, 2) optimization tests and 3) confirmatory tests.

"The paper describes the results of the flotation tests with complex rare metal ores from deposits in the Trans-Baikal Territory. Correlations between the quality of produced wolframite, hubnerite and mica concentrates with or without the presence of various alkaline modifiers are determined. Commonly, rare metal ores contain minerals of comparable value to main elements recovered in processing plants using gravitational methods. The paper describes the results of flotation recovery of valuable minerals – main and associated – from gravity tailings of deposits in the Trans-Baikal Territory. It was found that gravity tailings from the first deposit contained fine-grained wolframite, mica (muscovite, lepidolite etc.), feldspar; hubnerite, scheelite, beryl, fluorite, rubidium-containing muscovite from the second deposit, correspondingly. This paper presents the results of the stage flotation tests with the production of tungsten (wolframite, hubnerite), fluorite and mica concentrates from gravity tailings. Figure 1 demonstrates the flowsheet of tungsten ore minerals and mica stage flotation from gravity tailings of the first deposit.Wolframite can be floated using oleic acid with the presence of soda ash, a complexing collector (IM-50), under slightly alkaline conditions in combination with a nonpolar collector [1, 2, 3, 4]. The study included wolframite flotation using the combination of two alkaline modifiers. Flotation of wolframite was performed after pulp desliming, using tall oil saponified with soda ash. The recovery of wolframite in the concentrate of rougher flotation reached 80-85%; the concentrate contained up to 1% of tungsten oxide that can be upgraded to a saleable product using gravitational methods. This procedure was tested during flotation of wolframite, tantalite-columbite and pyrochlore, and provided high performance regardless of a season, at pulp temperatures of 8-10°C, though fattyacid collectors are significantly inefficient at such low temperatures due to low solubility, dispersion and increased collector consumption, consequently. The introduction of two alkaline modifiers in pulp appears to improve these characteristics.The first stage of the tests was focused on increase of iron-bearing tungsten ore minerals recovery from gravity tailings and stabilization of the cold pulp flotation process."

The ore, dealt with in this paper, is a certain rutile in Shanxi province, China. A trunk flowsheet with gravity concentration is used, and the TiO2 grade of rutile concentrate is about 90%, but the TiO2 recovery is less than 50%. In order to increase the rutile recovery, the laboratory test, using the truck flowsheet with flotation, is carried out. The flowsheet is that firstly floatable gangue is re-moved by flotation; secondly rutile is recovered by flotation; and thirdly impurity is separated by LIMS, HIMS, gravity concentration and flotation from the rutile concentrate. In rutile flotation, BK423, a phosphonic acid, is used as rutile collector, and Na2SiF6 is used as silicates depressant. The experimental result shows that the recovery of rutile concentrate is improved obviously, and the recovery of ultimate rutile concentrate is 68.01% TiO2 and 84.88% rutile. The TiO2 grade of first concentrate is 95.98%, and the TiO2 recovery is 45.60%. The TiO2 grade of second concentrate is 80.53%, and the recovery is 22.41%. Furthermore, magnetite and ilmenite are recovered in the flowsheet.

The main theoretical and experimental work that has been carried out by the National Institute for Metallurgy Research Group at the University of Natal is presented. The processing of banded iron ore by direct anionic and reverse cationic flotation to produce pellet grade concentrate is investigated. This low-grade iron ore, known as banded hematite quartzite (BHQ) contains 41.8% Fe, 41.5% SiO2, 1.2% Al2O3, and 0.5% LOI. The flotation behavior of BHQ is studied by varying the effect of concentration of collector, frother, dispersant and pH. Oleic acid and dodecylamine are used as the anionic and cationic collectors respectively. The parameters that gave the best results in cell flotation are utilized in 100 mm diameter flotation column. All the results are compared with regard to the iron grade and recovery in concentrate. It is observed that, anionic collector with dispersant dosage of 220 g/ton, at pH ~8.5 is selective and yielded a high-grade iron concentrate with low silica as impurity. Also, it is possible to achieve an iron concentrate with 64% Fe at 30-37% weight recovery. The characterization studies of the BHQ ore using X-ray diffraction (XRD) technique and liberation analysis with QEMSCAN® are carried out. The sample contains 58.8% hematite and 37.7% quartz and the liberation of hematite particles are found to be 90.3% in -25 µm size. An alternative statistical modeling approach called response surface methodology was also undertaken to optimize the operating parameters in order to maximize the iron grade and recovery. The predicted results by the model are in agreement with the experimental values.

The complex ore deposit containing fluorite, barite and bastnaesite minerals is located in Beylikova Region of Sivrihisar town of Eskisehir Province of Turkey. The ore contains 40.80% CaF2; 35.35% BaSO4; 2.01%Ce; 1.5% La; 0.39% Nd and 0.1% Th. Barite recovery from this ore by flotation of the HCl leached tailings is presented in this paper. Rare earths are recovered by leaching. The leached residue (tailings) containing fluorite and barite is subjected to froth flotation to recover barite. The effect of pH and collector concentration on the flotation of barite have been studied in this work.

In this paper, three novel surfactants containing double reactive centers(-CONHOH and –CONH-), double hydrophobic groups were designed and synthesized as collector for separation of diaspore and aluminosilicate minerals, such as N-(4-(hydroxyamino)-4-oxobutyl)octanamide (HA-8), N-(4-(hydroxyamino)-4-oxobutyl)decanamide (HA-10) and N-(4-(hydroxyamino)- 4-oxobutyl) -dodecanamide (HA-12). The adsorption mechanism of N-(4-(hydroxyamino) -4-oxobutyl)alkylamides (HA) onto diaspore was also investigated by FTIR spectra, zeta potential measurement and DFT. The flotation results demonstrated that three collectors all exhibited superior collecting power to diaspore and selectivity against kaolinite and illite, and could effectively realize flotation recovery of diaspore from bauxite ores contained aluminosilicate minerals under neutral conditions. Moreover, HA-12 was a superior collector than other two collectors for bauxite separation. The results of XPS, FTIR spectra and zeta potential illustrated that at around pH 6.0, HA might chemisorb on diaspore surfaces through Al-O coordination bonds formed by binding its –C(=O)NHOH or –C(=O)NH– chelate groups with aluminum atoms on diaspore surfaces. HA’s unique properties, such as characteristic bond patterns onto diaspore surfaces, double hydrophobic groups, and intermolecular hydrogen bonds between neighboring HA molecules coated on diaspore surfaces, rendered it to be a superior flotation collector for diaspore.

Separation of hematite and iron-containing silicate gangue - aegirine by Flotation using fatty acid collector and (NH4)2SiF6 depressant was investigated in this paper. The flotation tests with single minerals show Ammonium hexafluorosilicate (AHFS) is a selective depressant for aegirine in hematite flotation in weakly acidic medium, which can strongly reduce the flotation recovery of aegirine in the pH range of 4~5 while has no evident effect on the flotation of hematite. The results of flotation tests with actual ores show the separation of hematite from aegirine gangue by forth flotation was possible, and good selectivity was achieved. Chemisorptions were observed on aegirine mineral surface treated by AHFS solution by using SEM and IR spectrum measurements. On the basis of coordination chemistry, a comprehensive mechanism, which reasonably explains the selective depression of AHFS for iron-containing silicate, is also proposed.

"The flotation separation of muscovite from quartz was investigated using mixed sodium oleate/dodecylamine (NaOL/DDA) collectors. The flotation experiments were conducted on single minerals and their collecting performances were studied by means of adsorption amounts and molecular dynamics simulation. Flotation results show that muscovite presents good floatability while quartz exhibits poor floatability in alkaline condition. Adsorption amounts show that both NaOL and DDA can absorb onto surfaces of muscovite and quartz in presence of mixed surfactants. Molecular dynamics simulation indicates that DDA plays an important role in the adsorption of mixed surfactants on these two mineral surfaces. The molecules of mixed NaOL/DDA are arranged in a rigid and well-ordered packing on muscovite (001) surface. Only a few DDA adsorb on quartz directly, and rest DDA and NaOL molecule exist near by the quartz surface, forming a hydrophilic cylinder-like structure. This study may provide guidance for the flotation mechanism and application of mixed anionic/cationic collectors.INTRODUCTIONIn the past decades, there has been an ever-increasing demand for muscovite (KAl2(Si3Al)O10(OH)2) because of its potential applications in cosmetics, construction and metallurgy industries (Barlow & Manning, 1999). Besides, muscovite is an important carrier for some rare metals, including vanadium, titanium and lithium (SsuerrN, 1979). Quartz (SiO2) occurs as the main gangue mineral in muscovite ores, which results in a low purity of muscovite and limits its wide applications. Therefore, there is an urgent need for the beneficiation of low grade muscovite ores. Many studies remove quartz by screening and gravity separation in virtue of their differences in shape, hardness and density. However, these methods undergo poor efficiency in case of small particle size (below 50µm) of muscovite and quartz (Liubakka, Sullivan, Lamphere, Corradi, & Dykhuis, 2011; Santos, Franca, & Ogasawara, 2011)."

"In 1989 and 1990 abnormally high levels of arsenic in ore from the Thompson Open Pit Mine threatened Manitoba Division's electro-nickel production. The paper will discuss our development of a flotation process to separate pentlandite and gersdorffite (the prime nickel and arsenic bearing minerals).The presentation will focus on the development of the process from conception, through lab and plant test work, to plant optimization and full scale production. The paper will conclude with the benefits and cost of the completed project.INTRODUCTIONRejection of arsenic from nickel sulphide ores was not a primary concern in the Manitoba Division until 1989. At that time increased production in the Thompson Open Pit mine, which contains high arsenic ore zones, resulted in excess amounts of arsenic in the Thompson Refinery affecting electro-nickel quality. This problem was resolved through extensive efforts by Mill personnel. Of the impurities present in phosphate ore, dolomite is the most difficult to remove due to the similar chemical compositions of the impurities and also adsorption of dissolved species of dolomite onto phosphate. A new amphoteric surfactant was found to be a suitable collector for separation of dolomite from phosphate. Flotation results showed that the new amphoteric collector had a high flotation selectivity for dolomite in wide pH ranges. The flotation study of francolite and dolomite in each other's supernatant demonstrated that the dissolved ions had little effect on the selectivity of the new collector, but were detrimental to the flotation separation using sodium oleate as collector. A phosphate concentrate with 35.2% P2O5 with 90% recovery was obtained using 290 g/t of the amphoteric collector from a mixture of francolite and dolomite containing 26.2% P2O5. The rejection of MgO was 81.41%.

To recover iron values from low grade ores by reverse froth flotation method, further research on cationic collectors used in reverse flotation of iron ores is launched to promote the utilization efficiency of iron ores. In this paper, one new cationic surfactant, bis(2-hydroxylethyl) dodecylamine (BHD), that could be dissolved in water easily was used as collector for quartz flotation. Flotation results indicated that BHD shows stronger collecting performance on quartz than hematite. The maximum recovery of 96.30% to quartz is obtained at a collector concentration of 20.0 mg/L in the pulp pH range from 5 to 7. This collector can be used to float quartz from hematite. And optimal separation results with 86.59% iron recovery and 66.60% iron grade to synthetic sample were achieved at a collector concentration of 20.0 mg/L and pulp pH of 5.02 when hematite and quartz were mixed at a mass ratio of 3:2. The adsorption mechanism of the collector on quartz surface was investigated by XPS analysis, infrared spectroscopic analysis and zeta-potential measurements, which revealed that electrostatic attraction and hydrogen bonding adsorption occur between collector and quartz surface.

Scheelite was floated from a low-grade (0.28 per cent W03) calcitic (96.30 per cent CaCO3) scheelite ore using oleoyl sarcosine as collector and alkylated 8-hydroxyquinoline as modifier. Compared to oleoyl sarcosine alone, the grade and the recovery of scheelite concentrate were increased from 8.07 per cent to 33.54 per cent and from 55.1 per cent to 73.4 per cent, respectively. Infrared studies with pure calcite and scheelite minerals showed that while alkyl oxine is adsorbed on the scheelite surface, it is not adsorbed on the calcite.

Ca-containing gangue minerals such as Fluorite, Calcite have same surface activity point--calcium ions and approximate floatability with scheelite, it is difficult to achieve good dressing index of rough concentrate of scheelite. Mono-mineral experiments and ore tests indicate that, according to mineral composition, gangue minerals can be inhibited selectively by adopting suitable regulators, then the separation of scheelite from gangue minerals can be realized effectively. Mechanism analysis was taken by zeta potentials measurements and FTIR tests. Good dressing indexes are also obtained in practical ore tests and industrial tests.
