The principal impurities in some feldspar ores are titanium and iron which impart color and in turn degrade the quality of the ore. The mineralogical investigations indicate that titanium element originates from mainly rutile with small amounts of sphene. Conventionally, fatty acids and particularly sodium oleate are extensively used in the flotation of colored minerals from feldspar ores with reasonable success. In this study, new reagents, oleoyl sarcosine and hydroxamate have been used to float colored impurities before and after magnetic separation. Oleoyl sarcosine is found to exhibit better results compared to fatty acids and hydroxamate. The mechanism of the action is elaborated on the basis of experimental data.

Deposits of copper-porphyry type occupy a leading position in the mineral resource base of the world copper industry. They are characterized by large and gigantic scales, often complex composition, their development is carried out in an open way. The raw material base of the Russian copper industry is mainly sulfide copper-Nickel and copper-pyrite ores. Exploration of copper-porphyry deposits and the creation of long-term large mining facilities on their basis is one of the most promising and priority tasks for the Russian industry. This task is especially acute for the copper enterprises of the Urals in connection with the depletion of copper - pyrite ore reserves. In recent years, Russia has carried out a large complex of studies on the composition and technology of processing of copper-porphyry ores of different subtypes. In this work the complex poor copper-molybdenum-gold ore of one of the deposits is investigated. The chemical and mineral composition of the ore containing 0.49% copper, 0.020% molybdenum, 0.39 g/t gold, 5.85 g/t silver was determined. The forms of finding metals and their distribution by size classes are established. The dependence of extraction of metals into concentrates of collective-selective flotation on the size of ore grinding, pH of the medium, reagent consumption is shown. Under optimal flotation conditions, copper concentrate with 18.6% copper content and 92.32% extraction and molybdenum concentrate with 21.5% molybdenum content and 73.4% extraction were obtained. With a high concentration of molybdenum in selective flotation products, it is possible to conclude about the expected molybdenum concentrate with a content of 45% and a recovery of 70%. The associated extraction of gold and silver into copper concentrate is 76.8 % and 73.4%. Keywords: Collective-selective flotation, copper, molybdenum, porphyry ore, grinding, pH, reagents

Large tonnages of copper and molybdenum sulfide ore are treated by flotation. Substantial savings could be realized, particularly in high-capacity concentrators, by use of a simplified flotation technique involving lower reagent consumption. Chalcopyrite and molybdenite from some deposits can be floated by use of only a frother as a single flotation reagent; acceptable concentrate grade and recovery can be obtained. Separation of molybdenite from copper sulfides may become simpler and less costly. The genesis of the ore and the ions present in the flotation pulp liquid phase appear to be the major success-determining factors.

The adaptability of pneumatic flotation cells for the flotation of sulfide ore and the conditions for sulfide ore flotation in pneumatic cells were investigated. The advantages of pneumatic flotation cells over mechanical flotation cells, as well as flotation columns, for the flotation of sulfide ore were demonstrated. Test results indicated that the Cu grade and recovery for concentrates obtained when using the pneumatic flotation cell were 1 % to 2% and 4%, respectively, higher than those obtained when using the mechanical flotation machine.

THE use of froth flotation for the separation of minerals has become one of the most important of ore dressing processes. Its particular adaptability to the enrichment of low grade ores has made the process an important factor in the national economy. The methods have been extended to the recovery of a great number of minerals. Among the few minerals which have resisted efforts toward industrial flotation is chrysocolla, a hydrated partly colloidal copper silicate. Chrysocolla, being a product of natural oxidation, has been found to occur in small quantities with many ores which are recovered by flotation methods. In present practice, these small quantities of copper silicate pass off with the tailings and are lost. The advantages to be gained by a satisfactory process for the recovery of chrysocolla is apparent. Any application of principles which points a way toward the satisfactory industrial flotation process for copper silicate would be of advantage. This paper presents an attack on this problem.

The slag produced in metallurgical smelting processes contains considerable amount of valuable metals. The present work focuses on recovery of copper value by froth flotation from the copper smelter slag. The slag samples are subjected to detailed characterization including automated quantitative mineralogy using Mineral Liberation Analyzer (MLA). The MLA results indicate that a part of copper is present in sulphide form in fayalite (iron-silicate) matrix and very poorly liberated. SEM-EDX analyses also reveal that a certain part of the copper is present within the fayalite (Fe-Ca-Si) matrix, perhaps either as lattice impurity or very fine grain. The copper smelter slag is ground in wet mode in a ball mill, to particle size distribution suitable for flotation. Subsequently, the slurry undergoes froth-flotation in lab-scale Denver-type flotation cell. Various combinations of sodium iso-propyl xanthate (SIPX) and alkyl hydroxamate collectors are used along with pine oil as frother. A multiple collector dosage is required for effective flotation of non-sulphide copper phases associated fayalite and alkyl hydroxamate is identified as one of the effective collector for non-sulphide minerals. The copper recovery can be enhanced by 7-10% with a combination of collectors as compared to conventional sulphide flotation using only xanthate type collectors. In the development of novel sulfide collectors, especially for the low-lime and acid circuits, flotation of chalcopyrite, chalcocite, covellite and pyrite was studied with both new and commercially available S- containing collectors. The natural float- ability of sulfides, water quality, and redox potentials - all of which were considered im- portant in assessing collector strength and selectivity - were also investigated. Chalcopyrite exhibited the highest natural floatability. The response to most collectors, however, was chalcocite > covellite > chalcopyrite > pyrite. Water quality had a very significant effect on both natural and collector-aided floatability. De- ionized water and tap water had a flotation suppression effect compared with doubly- distilled water. Flotation results with single minerals are correlated with those for copper and pyrite from natural ores. Several novel collectors have now been developed for sulfide flotation in acid, neutral or mildly alkaline circuits. The results for four of these collectors, which have shown promise in commercial applications, are discussed in this paper.

Outokumpu has developed the HG or High Grade flotation cell over the past decade. This machine gives upgrading and selectivity performance superior to conventional mechanical cells while maintaining their simplicity, ease of operation and recovery characteristics. The HG design is available in a tank cell configuration which provides a number of benefits in plant design and operation. This paper will describe the HG Tank Cell and the "Virtual Column" concept. Results are given from the operation of the HG Tank Cells at Lac Minerals - Est Malartic in Quebec, Canada. Further discussion of applications for gold recovery is also provided.

THE International Smelting Co. concentrator at Tooele, Utah, first operated on a custom basis for the treatment of lead-zinc-iron ores on Nov.' 1, 1924, with a capacity of 500 tons per day. On May 1, 1925, the capacity was increased to 1000 tons per day by the addition of another 500-ton section. The concentrator has since operated on the two-section basis, each treating 500 tons per day entirely by flotation. LABORATORY AND TEST MILL In connection with the concentrator, a well-equipped laboratory and small continuous testing plant are maintained. The flotation equipment in the test plant is of both the Callow and Mineral Separations Sub-"A" types, so that actual concentrator conditions may be duplicated as closely as possible. PURCHASING OF ORE A new shipper usually sends to the plant a 25 to 50-lb. sample, representative of the ore to be shipped. Batch flotation tests are made on this sample to determine its amenability to the concentrator treatment flowsheet and reagent combinations. The results of these tests, which are accurately correlated with those obtained at the concentrator, both as to grades of products and recoveries, determine the actual value of the ore as submitted in the ore purchasing department's treatment schedule. Hearty cooperation has existed at all times between the ore purchasing and operating departments in the selection of ores as concentrator feed. ORE TREATED The basic tonnages for mixtures on the two sections come from the Park City and Bingham mining districts. The Park City tonnages are received by rail and consist of crude ores and gravity mill products. Those from the Bingham district are received by rail and aerial tramway,

"Bubble area flux has been claimed to be a major tool to dimension flotation equipment. The paper describes laboratory scale (batch and 301 continuous cell using plant feed) and small-scale (1 ,8m3) industrial experiments with coarse-grained massive sulphide ore.Samples were taken with different froth thickness and air addition rates while the bubble size was measured with an UTC capillary device. Problems of averaging the bubble size measurements and the bubble area flux measurements are also discussed.Material balances were calculated using the commercial program BILCO. The flotation rate constants were calculated for pulp and for froth assuming that we can extrapolate the flotation rate constant of the pulp phase from tests using very thin froth thicknesses.The results indicate that the bubble area flux is not alone an adequate dimensioning tool. With fine sizes there was a nearly linear relationship between the bubble area flux and rate constant for constant impeller revolutions. For coarse sizes the form of the relationship is non-linear and seems to go through a maximum value. Thus the final flotation outcome is not a simple function of bubble area flux but depends on the particle size distribution and other more traditional flotation cell dimensioning variables. The effect of the froth residence time in the total recovery of coarse particles is large, but will not be treated in this paper."

Batch laboratory-scale flotation tests were conducted on some carbonate-containing sedimentary phosphate ores to obtain concentrates suitable for chemical processing. The phosphate samples tested contained both calcite and dolomite. The calcitic phosphate ore was from Israel and the dolomitic ores were from China, India, Egypt, and Pakistan. The phosphate sample from Pakistan also contained a significant amount of silica. Several flotation techniques that have been proposed for upgrading carbonate -containing phosphate ores and concentrates were tested. Two processes gave better results compared with the other processes tested: a modified IMC anionic process and a. phosphoric acid depression process. At the best flotation conditions tested, phosphate concentrates assaying 32.5%-36.5% P205, 44.0%-51.0% CaO, and 0.6%-1.0% MgO were obtained at 69%-76% overall P205 recoveries from run-of-mine (ROM) ores containing 16.0%-25.0% P205, 40.0%-52.0% CaO, and 1.0%-11.6% MgO.

North Carolina is the leading state in the USA in feldspar, mica, and spodumene production. Mixed feldspar, spodumene, mica and quartz are mined from hard rock, open pit deposits and recovered by flotation from the fresh pegmatite type ores. Potash feldspar, mica, clay and quartz are recovered from weathered decomposed pegmatites. The North Carolina State University has a Minerals Research Laboratory in Asheville with trained personnel and flexible pilot plant equipment. The flowsheets for the feldspar, spodumene and mica producing companies and for large phosphate and glass sand flotation plants were developed and tested in Asheville. Examples and problems of pegmatite flotation are demonstrated with flowsheets and slides.

Factors of importance in the ntilization of coal fines are mentioned, and the results of flotation tests on coal fines from three important coal seams in New South Wales are presented.INTRODUCTIONEconomic utilization of fine coal is an important problem in the Australian coal industry, particularly as the proportion of fines mined is increasing with progressive mechanization.While the use of uncleaned coal fines may be economic, it may be preferable to beneficiate them, but the most economic process must be selected.For beneficiating coal finer than about 28 mesh, froth flotation can be applied, but mining engineers should avoid practices that may be detrimental to flotation. Such practices include the indiscriminate use of water, particularly that containing a wetting' agent, for dust suppression. In addition, clay stemming in wet conditions may produce slimes which could adsorb on coal surfaces, while the use of oils and greases as well as the application of stone dust and chlorides in roadway consolidation may influence adversely fine coal beneficiation.This paper deals with the application of flotation to samples of fine coal from the Bulli, Greta, and Victoria Tunnel seams. INTRODUCTION Manganese nodules were first discovered by the H.M.S. CHALLENGER expedition of 1873-76 and have engaged the interest of oceanographers and natural resources engineers ever since (1-4). Manganese nodules, some of them as large as grapefruit, cover vast stretches of the ocean floor throughout many parts of the world. In some areas the ocean floor is literally paved with nodules. The Pacific Ocean alone is estimated to contain 1.5 trillion tons of nodules which are forming at the rate of about 10 million tons per year (2). An analysis of the principal metal values for Pacific Ocean nodules is shown in Table I (5). "It is well understood that, apart from particle hydrophobicity, the flotation process is strongly influenced by the cell hydrodynamics. Once the chemical conditions were optimized and fixed, the flotation rate is essentially determined by impeller speed and the air flow rate.The collection efficiency in flotation is a product of collision, attachment and stability/detachment efficiencies. The collision efficiency for a given particle diameter is increased by decreasing the bubble size and bubble velocity as well as increasing the power input to the cell. The attachment efficiency, however, is defined by bubble size and its velocity. The detachment/stability depends on the relative magnitudes of the attachment force between the bubble and particles and the detachment force acting on the bubble-particle aggregates. For the particles having specific contact angle, the stability decreases as the energy input increases. Therefore, there must be an optimum energy dissipation to maximize recover of defined size fraction.A comprehensive laboratory study was devoted to determine the effect of power input in recovery of finely grind Cu-Ni bearing ore. Several flotation tests were conducted to define the hydrodynamic parameters for a laboratory scale Runge cell under different impeller speeds. An increase in flotation recovery of finely ground ore was observed when the impeller speed was increased from 450 to 1,200 rpm. The experimental results have shown increasing in water recovery and improving in flotation kinetics of fines by increasing the power input to the flotation cell. Implementation of the Wark flotation model to the experimental data revealed a good correlation between the experimental data and the model. For the particles having enough hydrophobicity the flotation rate increases by increasing the impeller speed due to a higher value for collision efficiency within the cell."

The concentration of barite by gravity separation generates substantial quantities of fine particle wastes, and it is estimated that =40% of the contained barite is lost to these waste streams. In this study, froth flotation was examined as a potential method for the recovery of fine-barite particles. The study included the use of kinetic equations to estimate the variables affecting flotation, batch-scale rougher flotation tests to study the flotation variables and an examination of alternatives for the cleaning of the rougher concentrate. Results indicated that a concentrate grade of 96.5% could be achieved with a recovery of 77.5%. Although barite flotation from industrial wastes is more difficult than direct barite flotation, the process has considerable economic potential.

A fluorite ore (51.85 % CaF2) containing high contents of calcite, quartz and iron oxides was upgraded by flotation using a new reagent, oleoyl sarcosine (OS). In addition, quebracho and sodium silicate were used as depressants for calcite and quartz, respectively. The effect of pH, collector and depressants concentrations on grade and recovery was determined with the aim of optimizing the flotation conditions. Application of the two-stage cleaning achieved a concentrate assaying 92.17 % CaF2 with 80.1 % recovery. The Si02 content (0.76 %) was below the required level of 1 % SiO2. The mechanism of interaction between OS and fluorite, as compared to oleic acid, is also elucidated based on the zeta potential measurements.

"The purpose of this research is to develop enhancements in the mineral processing by flotation methods of nonferrous ores. Currently, 180-190 million tons of ore are processed by flotation in Russia. The annual processing volume of copper-nickel and copper-zinc ores exceeds 20 million tons. In the total volume of processed ores by flotation, non-ferrous ores account for roughly 35% and ores of precious metals for another 15%. The total demand of flotation reagents in Russia in 2016 was estimated at 170,000 tons. Sulfur-based collectors used in the flotation of non-ferrous sulfide ores (typically, xanthates) do not always offer sufficiently high recovery of valuable components.It has been found that reagents like DMIPEC and DK-80 improve the recovery of metals into concentrates. To identify the reasons of that higher recovery, quantum chemical calculations of the mechanism and interaction forces of DMIPEC with non-ferrous sulfides were undertaken by determining the stabilization energy of the resulting chemical complexes. It has been shown that, in the interaction of DMIPEC and DK-80 with the surfaces of sulfide minerals, ethylene and acetylene bonds act as the reaction centers, and the formation of molecular p-complexes is the result of metal-cation interactions with the surface and the flotation reagents.In the flotation of non-ferrous ores, DMIPEC and DK-80 act as selective supplementary collectors with foaming properties, and at a flow rate of 3-35 g/ton, they reduce the flotation time, and increase copper recovery by up to 3.5%, zinc recovery by up to 12%, gold recovery by up to 8-10%, allowing to increase the recovery of valuable components by 1.5-12.0%, basically this kind of reagents nearly double the flotation rate, improve the grade of the concentrate, improve the stability of the flotation process parameters, and reduce the environmental impact of flotation plants."
