Construction of the MBTA Red Line Extension through Somerville, MA, called for driving twin tube tunnels through a zone of approximately 83m (273 ft) with mixed face conditions. While the majority of the tunnels were driven through competent hard rock using drill and blast techniques, the mixed face zone was advanced using floating crown bars for primary support. The overburden consisted of medium clay, underlain by water bearing glacial till, over a sloping bedrock surface. Due to the unusual nature of the construction techniques, a program was undertaken by the Contractor to monitor ground movement and stresses in the temporary steel supports. This paper presents a description of the instrumentation employed, as well as the measured ground movements and support stresses. Additionally, the tunneling techniques are briefly presented and commented upon. PROJECT DESCRIPTION The Davis Square to Porter Square Tunnel Contract is part of the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authorities (MBTA) Red Line Extension from Harvard Square in Cambridge to the Alewife Brook Parkway via Somerville. The 5.1km (17,000 ft) Red Line Extension consists of four major new stations, three of which will be interlinked via tunnel construction, and the remaining station will be the last link of an open cut portion, and a terminal point for this phase of the extension. This 866m (2,790 ft) portion began at Porter Square in Cambridge and rose at a 4% slope through Somerville, terminating at the new Davis Square Station. Twin tube tunnels were constructed through 763m (2,517 ft) of rock and 83m (273 ft) of mixed face conditions at the Davis Square end. Figure 1 presents a plan view of the entire contract.

In the Bureau of Mines study, a filter with a 20-by 20-inch-square cross section was inserted into the exhaust ducting of a 4-stroke-cycle, 90-hp diesel engine, and the efficiency of removal of total particulate was measured gravimetrically as a function of time. Removal efficiencies were close to 90 pct during the main portion of several extended runs employing several combinations of filter beds. Variations in engine load had little effect on collection efficiency. Particle size as measured by a Bureau-developed online instrument centered on 0.07 m based on number count. Removal efficiency increased rather sharply for both larger and smaller particles.

The construction of diaphragm walls and most large-diameter bored piles (piers) is often carried out under drilling support fluids to temporarily stabilise the excavation prior to concrete placement. In most cases such fluids are either mineral-based slurries (bentonite) or polymer support fluids. The working mechanisms of these two fluid types are fundamentally different. Designers need to consider possible fluid-related impacts on the permanent design performance of the project-specific deep foundations as well as for the temporary excavation stage during construction. Robust design methods for bentonite slurry-supported excavations have been developed in the last few decades and the working principles and associated risks of such mineral-based slurries are understood reasonably well. However, such meth-ods have not been developed in detail for polymer-based drilling fluids. This document provides a brief overview of the main characteristics of bentonite- and polymer-based drilling fluids as a guide for construction practitioners and design engineers alike. The paper also high-lights some common construction risks related to casing installation and the selection of suitable fluid systems for different ground conditions. Typical defects caused by the incorrect application of drilling support fluids, and their pro-active mitigation, are discussed, too. In addition, the basic concepts of sta-bility calculations for bentonite fluid-supported deep excavations are briefly introduced and their ap-plicability for other fluid types such as polymer-based support fluids or water are reviewed.

A refractory-lined, garage-type automobile incinerator with a natural gas afterburner for air pollution control was cooperatively constructed and tested by the Bureau of Mines and the Wasatch Metal & Salvage Co. in Salt Lake City, Utah. The incinerator is capable of relatively smokeless burning of 32 to 60 cars per day, dependent on the degree to which the cars are stripped prior to incineration. Preliminary burning campaigns indicate the cost of incineration to be approximately $2.75 per car.

The mining production rate of two million tonnes per annum at Olympic Dam required greater servicing capacity than was available with the existing Whenan Shaft. To increase servicing capability a Service Decline was constructed from June 1986 to June 1987 extending 2000 m from the surface and linking up with inclining development from the existing Whenan Shaft workings. The decline was used for access of all men and materials during the construction phase of the ore handling system. During production, most mine servicing will be via the decline with hoisting of rock through Whenan Shaft.

The Waikato Expressway is one of the New Zealand Transport Agency’s (NZTA) seven roads of National Significance. Coffey is part of the City Edge Alliance engaged by NZTA for the Hamilton Section of the project. The 22km Hamilton Section is the largest and most geotechnically complex section of the Expressway. The Mangaonua gully in Sector 6 is the most challenging geotechnical area of the project for piling works. Together Coffey and Brian Perry Civil have carried out the temporary and permanent design and construction of embankments, piling works, retaining walls and soil improvement works for the bridge construction. The design and construction works were governed by weak alluvial layers and artesian pressure layers several meters beneath the ground level. This paper presents the action taken to improve the foundation of temporary platform, control the artesian pressure, prevent bentonite leakages into the highly permeable alluvial layer and challenges in the base grouting process. This paper summarises the key components in the construction and supervision of bored piling works and outlines innovative solutions for challenges which we faced during the construction.

Central Oregon is a fast growing resort community centered in Bend, Oregon. Bend is bordered by the Cascade Mountains to the west and the high dessert to the east. Central Oregon is blanketed with lava rock with little topsoil. Ditch blasting is a staple in the area. Almost all utilities excavation (gas lines, sewer lines, water lines, and electrical lines) requires blasting. There is also a considerable amount of blasting required for site excavations and drywells. On average, there are over 500 blasts per year in Bend alone. All of this blasting is done using small holes, generally 2.5 inches in diameter. Typical ditches will have 200 holes, between 2-3 rows wide, with an average depth of 8 feet, and on 36 inch centers. Almost all shots are dry. Successful blasting requires careful control of drilling and loading. The vesicular basalt contains numerous lava tubes and caves making drilling and loading difficult. The rock conditions vary greatly from one side of town to the other requiring different powder factors and different scale of distances for vibration control. Caret%1 calculations of vibration predictions and use of site-specific seismic info is necessary. Marry shots will require deck loading and careful timing to ensure one-charge per delay. It is an every day occurrence to be blasting near residential and commercial structures or high pressure gas lines. Many times ditch blasting will incorporate excavation blasting. The different hole patterns used for the ditches and the excavation shots presents challenging timing sequences.

The Anderson Dam Tunnel Project is a high-priority, urgent project under construction by the Santa Clara Valley Water District in California. The project will provide a new low-level outlet for the Anderson Reservoir enabling the seismic retrofit of the Anderson Dam as mandated by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission. This paper describes planning for construction of the tunnel through the dam’s right abutment crossing several faults in challenging and variable soft and hard ground conditions. The construction methods include SEM, hard rock drill and blast techniques, and a mechanized 8-foot (2.5 m) diameter microtunneled lake tap.

Ground Modification construction is rapidly evolving in the United States. An assessment of the construction status of Ground Modification methods with their dates of introduction and general acceptance in the United States is summarized. Seven of these techniques are discussed in depth with short case histories; namely, Dynamic Deep Compaction, vibro-compaction, vibro-Replacement, chemical grouting, compaction grouting, slurry grouting and jet grouting. Additional case histories are presented to illustrate the trend of combining Ground Modification techniques to solve specific site problems.

A geotechnical instrumentation program consisting of borehole extensometers and portable tape extensometer stations was effectively used to monitor concrete liner deformations and guide construction procedures during enlargement of a 75-year old Union Pacific Railroad tunnel in Wyoming. Enlargement involved excavation of the old concrete invert and placement of 5,941 feet of new concrete invert 6 feet lower in squeezing shales, fault zones and water-bearing sandstones. Instrumentation data were used to guide procedures for excavating the old invert, installation of temporary interior struts, underpinning existing liner walls, and placing the new concrete invert.

To those who have been engaged in the construction of mining and metallurgical plants during the war and post-war periods, it is quite unnecessary to point out the large increases and violent fluctuations in prices of basic commodities and the steady and persistent rise in labour costs. It may, however, be of interest to present these facts in graphic form, and survey the relative heights of the various maxima and the lead and lag of individual waves. Since Descartes demonstrated for us moderns the analogy between geometric form and algebraic statements, the two-dimensional graph has found widespread application. Mathematicians have developed for our information, if not for our confusion, the triangular diagram and the solid three-dimensional figures, which have proved so useful, at least in the hands of the metallurgists at Port Pirie. The model (Plate 1.) which is exhibited here does not pretend however, to indicate the connection between any three inter-related variables, and it is not proposed to burden members with any abstruse mathematical expression for the irregular surface of the blocks. While time is an ordinate common to all sections of the model, each illustrates separately the variation in cost of some particular quantity between the years 1914 and 1922. It is an easy matter to record such individual variations, but it would be an impossible task to state any equation describing accurately the dependence ot the prices, say, of hardwood or of galvanized iron upon that of labour at any particular point of time. The cost of living curve, which has attained such prominence, if not notoriety, in the last few years, is the result of an attempt to show the mass-effect of the components. It is the difficulty found in "assigning the correct weight to the separate items which makes the aggregate curve somewhat misleading at times.Turning to the model, it will be noticed that each section consists of half a dozen pegs.. "Since the dawn of construction, there has been a need for excavations, which sometimes need to occur below the groundwater table. Excavations in themselves are difficult enough, with the myriad of requirements, such as engineered support of excavations, considerations for stability and numerous other concerns. Excavations executed in rural landscapes can be accomplished easily without significant consideration to accessibility, adjacent properties or structures, and construction limits and deformations. However, all of these factors can have an impact on excavation considerations in an urban landscape. When digging below the groundwater table, these conditions, along with concerns associated with groundwater drawdown requirements, discharge limitations, groundwater contamination, property limits, adjacent buildings and subsidence concerns, can lead an experienced dewatering contractor to consider diverse installation methodology and equipment to allow construction to occur below the groundwater table.534 W. 29th St. New York, N.Y.There are many things that must be considered when constructing a new high-rise building within a small property footprint measuring 25 ft (7.6 m) wide by 80 ft (24.4 m) in length. When you take into account that the foundation needs to go several feet below the groundwater table and that there are two existing multistory buildings with shallower foundations on either side of the proposed structure, this task now becomes much more difficult. Consideration of geology, groundwater levels, depths of excavation and shoring for the excavation becomes critical to the success of the project. On a regular basis, dewatering contractors confront similar situations in congested cities where available real estate is limited.To minimize the negative impacts of construction dewatering, it is important to mitigate the potential effects of construction dewatering to the surrounding buildings, sidewalks, underground structures, tunnels, subways and other existing infrastructure. Such an instance occurred at the project located at 534 W. 29 St. in New York City. On this particular project, the required drawdown was greater than the typical 15 ft (4.6 m) of suction lift, so a vacuumed can pump system was utilized. The tubing was connected to a vacuumed perimeter dewatering well-point system, which is a predrainage system that is installed prior to the start of excavation for the underpinning of the adjacent structures and for the overall foundation. Each well-point, which was composed of a PVC pipe that was 1.5 in (38 mm) in diameter by 25 ft (7.6 m) long, was drilled to a depth of about 23 ft (7 m) using a hollow stem auger and was installed around the perimeter at a centerto- center spacing of about 7.67 ft (2.3 m). In lieu of a traditional perimeter collection header, and to allow for greater flexibility for the contractor, the well-points were interconnected to a modified vacuum can pump system utilizing ¾ in (19 mm) drop tubes that were “spaghetti” around the perimeter."

The following is a progress report on a continuing study being made by the Sanitary District for purposes of developing reliable data for predicting costs and progress on future tunnel contracts. All data available to date on five separate tunnel contracts has been analyzed. All were machine-mined in soft ground, all used steel ribs and wood lagging and finished inside diameters varying from 5'6" to 6'6". Basic data regarding progress per shift, hours mined per shift, hours of downtime per shift, cause of downtime and type of soil mined were reported by the District's resident engineer at the job site. Figure 1, Weekly Mining Report is an example of the form used. Data regarding manpower and equipment used during tunnelling operations was also supplied by the resident engineer during the course of construction. Soil type being mined was verified by the resident engineer during construction, by visual observation, and compared with data listed on a previously prepared soil profile. "Construction of basement floors has become necessary to meet the requirement of parking in office and residential complexes and in hospitals for radiotherapy treatment. Important projects coming up in Kolkata are mostly in closer proximity of residential buildings, office buildings and historical monuments. Sheet piling is mostly used as temporary shoring system during construction. Deep excavation in urban environment creates great problem related to construction induced vibration due to driving of sheet piles for basement, pile driving etc. which raises the chances of damage of adjacent buildings and nearby structures. Vibratory sheet-pile driving is the most common method of sheet pile installation. The knowledge of induced vibration due to this phenomenon is still very deficient. This paper presents the analysis of measured vibration data collected from different sites of Kolkata with varying soil profile. Typical two case studies of sheet pile and pile driving has been presented and the vibration values are analysed. The responses of the vibration are reported in terms of peak particle velocities (PPV). To evaluate the effects of vibration due to pile driving two aspects have been considered: the effect of the energy entering the ground from the pile and the effect of the soil condition.INTRODUCTIONIn urban areas infrastructure development projects are mainly located adjacent to existing structures like residential buildings, offices and historical structures. The construction work of such project influences the surrounding environment as well as human perception (Wiss 1981). During the construction of basement for residential complexes and hospitals sheet piling is mostly used as temporary shoring system or as to support the earth mass. The vibration induced due to driving of piles and sheet piles have been presented herein. Deep excavation projects close to existing structures increase the concern of environmental impact. For this reason the vibration assessment and prediction has become a subject of great interest. It is important to develop a site specific model for predicting the ground vibration resulting from pile and sheet pile driving at the construction sites. The developed model gives the efficacy to guide the engineer to select the construction methodology ensuring the safety of the surrounding structure. The model developed here is site specific and the parameters that has been used are dependent on the soil condition and the energy source."

Incorporation of heat exchangers into drilled shaft foundations is a novel approach to both improve the energy efficiency of building heat pump systems and provide necessary structural support using the same construction materials. In an effort to quantify the structural and heat exchange performance of deep foundations used as ground-source heat pumps, two instrumented test foundations were constructed as part of a new construction project in Denver, CO. They will be integrated into the conventional ground-source heat pump system for the building. This paper focuses on the lessons learned from the construction process for these energy foundations.

INTRODUCTION A team effort by the Owner, Engineer, and Contractor can help avoid serious problems on a construction project. It can save cost and time for both Owner and Contractor, as illustrated in the following case history of the West Zone and Siouf Keblia Collector System in Alexandria, Egypt (Contract 02-AID-83/84). Under the bilateral agreement made in 1980 between the United States of America and the Arab Republic of Egypt, the United States, through the Agency of International Development (USAID), gives approximately $1 billion per year as a grant to Egypt for various development projects. The Alexandria Wastewater Management System was selected in 1981 as one such project. The Egyptian Government Agency responsible for this work is the Alexandria General Organization for Sanitary Drainage (AGOSD). A joint venture of two U.S. consulting engineering firms, CH2M HILL, Inc., and Metcalf & Eddy, Inc., called Wastewater Consultants Group, along with two local subconsultants, Engineering Consulting Group and Warith Engineering Co., were selected by AGOSD to study the sewer system and develop a plan to serve the immediate and long-range sewage disposal needs of Alexandria. Wastewater Consultants Group is currently involved in Phase I of the Master Plan. This initial step in providing Alexandria with an operating sewerage system for the current and near-term population (year 2000) consists of the design and construction management of 140 kilometers of collector and force main pipelines (including 9 miles of pipe jacking and tunneling in very soft clay), five new pumping stations, extensive rehabilitation of two treatment plants (built in the 1960s but never operated successfully), and installation of a sludge handling system. The Melbourne City Link Project has two tunnels, the Domain and Burnley Tunnels, which have been constructed by Transfield Obayashi Joint Venture (TOJV) under a design and construct contract. The two tunnels are located essentially under the Kings Domain, the Yarra River and, in the case of the longer Burnley Tunnel, under the inner suburb of Richmond. The Burnley Tunnel is 3.5 km long and reaches a depth of 65 m at the central Swan Street Shaft, the invert being at RL -60 m. The Domain Tunnel is 1.6 km long, with the invert reaching RL -20. The tunnels were driven, for the most part, in the siltstone and sandstone of the Silurian Age Melbourne Formation. Construction aspects of the driven tunnels as related to the engineering geology have been described by Hutchison et al (1998). The Silurian bedrock is a fractured rock aquifer that is connected to overlying alluvial aquifers. Excavation of the tunnels allowed temporary groundwater inflows which substantially de-pressurised portions of the various aquifers. This de-pressurisation provided the potential to accelerate on-going secondary consolidation rates of the Holocene Aged Coode Island Silt (CIS) and the older Quaternary Fishermens Bend Silt (FBS) deposits, in areas where these materials directly overly the aquifers. As a large portion of the urban area of South Melbourne and the old river course of the Yarra River contain extensive CIS deposits, and were within the drawdown influence of the tunnels, the management of the hydrogeological regime was very important. The permanent design of the tunnels comprised drained and undrained sections (a partially tanked design) which, along with some permanent recharge, provide long-term protection against the possibility of accelerated settlement rates. During construction TOJV implemented a comprehensive groundwater management plan to deal with issues related to the temporary drawdown of the aquifers and the temporary acceleration of settlement. This paper describes the hydrogeological regime, the effects of the tunnelling, the monitoring programs, the extensive temporary recharge system, and the consultation program that TOJV utilised to manage the hydrogeological issues.
