The permeability of Mo-0.5 pel Ti to hydrogen was investigated over a limited range of temperature and pressuire (709° to 1100°C, 1.i and 2.0 atm). The resulting permeability, p, is found to obey the The experimental data justifies the permeation mechanism as a diffusion contl-olled pnssage of Ilvdrogen atoms through the metal barrier. 1 HE permeability of metals to hydrogen has been investigated by a number of workers and their published results have been tabulated by Barrer' up to 1951. Since most of the work on the permeability has been accomplished prior to this date, the compilation is fairly complete. Mathematical discussion of the permeability process has been reported by Barrer, smithells, and more recently by zener. From these efforts several facts are observed. First, the permeability of metals to diatomic gases involves the passage through the metal of individual atoms of the permeating gas. This is evidenced by the fact that the rate of permeation is directly proportional to the square root of the gas pressure. Second, the gas permeates the lattice of the metal and not along grain boundaries. It was shown by Smithells and Ransley that the rate of permeation through single-crystal iron was the same after the iron had been recrystallized into several smaller crystals. Third, it has been observed that the rate of permeation is inversely proportional to the thickness of the metal membrane. Johnson and Larose5 verified these phenomena by measurirlg the permeation of oxygen through silver foils of various thicknesses. Similar findings were noted by Lombard6 for the system H-Ni and by Lewkonja and Baukloh7 for H-Fe. Finally, it has been determined that for a gas to permeate a metal, activated adsorption of the gas on the metal must take place. Rare gases are not adsorbed by metals, and attempts to measure permeabilities of these gases have proved futile. ~~der' found negative results on the permeability of iron to argon. Also, Baukloh and Kayser found nickel impervious to helium, neon, argon, and krypton. From what was stated above concerning the dependence of the rate on the reciprocal thickness of the metal barrier, it is seen that although adsorption is a very important process, at least in determining whether permeation will or will not ensue, it is not the rate determining process for the common metals. A case in which adsorption is of sufficient inlportance to cause abnormal behavior has been noted in the case of Inconel-hydrogen and various stainless steels.'' APPARATUS The apparatus used in this study is shown in Fig. 1. The membrane is a thin disc (A), but is an integral part of an entire membrane assembly. The entire unit is one piece, being machined from a solid ingot of metal stock. When finished, the membrane assembly is about 5 in. long. Two membrane assemblies were made; the dimensions of the membranes are given in Table I. The wall thickness is large compared to the thickness of the membrane, being on the average in the ratio of 13 to 1. There exists in this design the possibility that some gas may diffuse around the corner section of the membrane where it joins the walls of the membrane assembly, If such an effect is present, it is of a small order of magnitude, as evidenced by the agreement of the values of permeability between the two membranes under the same temperature and pressure. A thermocouple well (B) is drilled to the vicinity of the membrane. The entire membrane assembly is then encased in an Inconel jacket and mounted in a resistance furnace. The interior of the jacket is connected to an auxiliary vacuum pump and is always kept evacuated so that the membrane assembly will suffer no oxidation at the temperatures at which measurements are taken. The advantages of this configuration are: 1) there are no welds about the membrane itself, so that the chance of welding material diffusing into the membrane at elevated temperatures is remote. 2) It is possible to maintain the membrane at a constant temperature. Since the resulting permeation rate is very dependent upon temperature, it is advisable to be as free as possible from all temperature gradients. 3) It is possible to obtain reproducible results using different specimens. RADER, presented at the Casper Meeting of the Petroleum Division and issued, as Paper No. 1503-G, with MINING AND METALLURGY, September, 1925. C. E. REISTLE, Laramie, Wyo.-The application of water analysis to petroleum engineering problems is successful in many cases, particularly if the water in the sands is of uniform chemical constituency and if each sand water varies definitely from the others in its chemical properties. At Salt Creek, the sand waters are not of uniform chemical character, and the waters in the various sands do not differ greatly; so a water from one sand might easily be classified as a water from some other sand. The water from the Shannon sand contains sulfates; this alone makes it possible to differentiate between the Shannon and the First and Second Wall Creek and Lakota sands. However, it is not so easy to differentiate between water of the First and Second Wall Creek sands. As a rule, the Second Wall Creek sand contains a higher concentration of mineral matter, but in Table 19, sample 2; of the First Wall Creek sand and sample 7 of the Second Wall Creek sand have approximately the same amount of total solids. As a rule, the chlorides are higher in the Second sand waters than in the First sand; but, the chlorides in sample 6 of the Second sand show practically the same amount as sample 3 of the First sand. The use of reaction properties does not. solve this trouble, as they generalize the conditions even more. For instance, the reaction properties of sample 3 of the First sand are almost identical with the reaction properties of sample 6, of the Second sand. The authors suggest that the chemical characteristics of the water in a sand are not uniform because of the concentration of the water by underground evaporation. In that case should not the ratio of the various chemical constituents remain the same? Gas does remove some mineral matter, as evidenced by deposits in the gas lines and packing in the absorbers of the natural gasoline plants, but why does the gas act selectively, removing one salt and not all of the salts in the ratio that they occur?

Success of the Gold Line Eastside Extension rail tunnels in Los Angeles has prompted Metro?s planning for two new rail lines to include underground alternatives. The Westside Extension Transit Corridor alternatives include up to 17 miles of subway to be constructed in soft ground. The routes will require construction in Los Angeles? ?Potential Methane Zone,? not considered for subway construction until recently. Slurry face TBMs will likely be specified. The Regional Connector, through the downtown area, includes one underground alternative with 1.7 miles of tunnel as well as three underground stations in soft ground and rock. Challenges will include tunnel and station construction under narrow streets. This paper will describe the alternatives, planning, geologic conditions and tunneling concepts for both planning studies.

In the November 1957 issue of "Chemical Process Engineering," a British publications, there appeared an article entitled "Correct Selection of Drying Equipment." The author wrote as follows "Whether batch drying or continuous drying' methods are applied, the basis of efficient drying is heat distribution, control of rate of heat input, and heat transference from heating medium to the particles of the material to be dried." The author continues: "Because the efficiency of direct dryers, such as hot air or hot gas dryers, increases with rising inlet temperature of the drying air or gas when exhaust temperature remains fixed, the highest practical drying temperature should be used. Exhaust air should leave the dryer at the lowest possible temperature, but as fully saturated with moisture as possible." It is certainly conceivable that the author of this article by outlining the basic requirements for efficient drying methods has unwittingly given the reasons why fluidized drying is rapidly being adopted for so many industrail applications, including the dryingof fine coal. An examination in greater detail of the individual basic requirements for efficient drying as outlined by the author is perhaps the most logical starting point.

"Several new large copper and gold concentrators have been built and commissioned around the world in the past five to eight years. The success of the ramp-up from these very large concentrators has varied. CITIC SMCC Process Technology was engaged to assist some of these mines by gaining a better understanding of the factors that influence throughput capacity. As such, site-specific throughput forecast models that are influenced by SAG mill performance were developed. The forecast models are easy to interpret and modify and can greatly assist the mine management to make predictions and informed decisions for a range of site improvements. The models investigate the influence of SAG mill performance with respect to ore competency, derived from SMC Test® via the measured DWi model parameter. In some cases the benefits of blasting and from fine tuning milling operations are already incorporated into the "site-specific" forecast models. The methodology follows rigorous plant data analysis that is analogous to a "Mine-to-Mill®" optimisation project. The CITIC-SMCC model validation includes extensive data collection, which includes drill core analysis, ore characterisation and comprehensive comminution circuit operational data to assess the limitations within the comminution circuit within the operating mine. The results and models may be used to define the operating base lines of the processing areas and identify improvement opportunities upstream and downstream of the comminution circuit. The predictive capability of the models use logged production data and has enabled the user to differentiate between alternative circuit configuration options and identify optimum operating conditions. This approach minimises the ongoing requirement for costly plant surveys. The improvement strategy for each site, included the ongoing measurement of grindability, rock strength and via the Bond and SMC Test® respectively. Some commentary as to what other practitioners do with input data and their models is also presented as this highlights some of their shortcomings relative to the CITIC-SMCC methods."

"Abstract Vibration limits for buildings with respect to ground vibrations from pile driving published in international standards are reviewed. At first, relevant vibration parameters are defined and the evaluation of vibration records is described. The sensitivity of structures to different vibration parameters (displacement, velocity and acceleration) is discussed. Most vibration standards relate to blasting activities, the dynamic characteristics of which can be significantly different to those from construction activities and in particular, pile driving. Several vibration standards are reviewed. The Swedish vibration standard is described in detail, as it is the only one accounting for several important factors, such as ground conditions, building material, and type of building foundation. Many standards limit the guidance to values based on the dominant vibration frequency and a wide scatter of frequency-dependent vibration limits exists. It is difficult to compare limiting values of ground vibrations proposed in different standards.1. INTRODUCTIONFor poor ground conditions, placing structures on piles is the most common foundation solution, while sheet piles are widely used to support deep excavations. Piles and sheet piles must often be installed in the close vicinity to buildings, structures or installations in the ground, which can be affected by ground movements and vibrations, (Massarsch and Fellenius, 2014). In many areas, environmental concerns with respect to noise and ground vibrations can restrict or even prohibit driving of piles or sheet piles or reduce the efficiency of installation. The design engineer must prescribe – often at an early stage of a project — the permissible levels of ground vibrations in order to minimize the potential risk of building damage. When seeking guidance from the literature, little or practically no applicable information can be found on how to assess permissible levels of ground vibrations."

Invented by Pierre Boutin in the early 1960s the column was a complete break from the conventional flotation cell. 1. When used as a rougher-scavenger, the column is excellent. 2. When used as a cleaner, the results can be spectacular. The very first column tests were carried out using it as a rougher-scavenger in a reverse float where silica was floated from iron. It produced a concentrate underflow as good or better than that produced from roughing and scavenging stages in cells, The froth tailing overflow was better than that produced by several stages of cell cleaning. Column scaleup progressed rapidly from the two inch diameter unit to a semi automated 12 inch diameter column on material from the Iron Ore Company of Canada. A change in operating philosophy within IOCC brought all flotation development, column or conventional, to a halt. At that time, IOCC had an exclusive right to the use of the column in Canada in the field of iron ore. We moved into the field of sulphides. A Canadian copper producer sent ore for testing and the results led to their purchase of the first commercial size of column - a 36 inch diameter machine. It was a mechanical disaster. It took several years to raise sufficient funds to return to that mill with our basic 18 inch square unit. It was to be tested and modified in order to learn how to properly design a large column. Originally used as a rougher- scavenger, it had to produce tails equal to the final tailings from this well run plant. It did, and did so while producing a rougher-scavenger concentrate almost equal to the plant final concentrate. It was finally used as a cleaner and produced concentrate 5% higher in copper than the plant final concentrate with equal cleaner tails. This phase of the column development was carried out under very difficult circumstances. The mill superintendent had realized that if he took the froth removal system from our original mechanical disaster and applied it to a conditioner while injecting air, he would have a flotation cell. He had personally applied for patents on this Maxwell Cell. Our development work was done in his mill and as our results became better and better, our difficulties became worse and worse. We finally had to terminate this work. The 18 inch column installed at Mines Gaspé 14 years later was identical to the one removed from Opemiska. The 18 inch column was tried on various ores over the following years and always produced excellent results. However, it was not really a production size unit. We had always aimed for the 72 inch column (72" x 72" x 44' 9"). Prior to this huge machine, we needed the intermediate 36 inch column. The failure of the original 36 inch diameter unit at Opemiska had raised the possibility of short circuiting inside the column as the cross section increased. The first 36 inch square unit was tested in parallel with the proven 18 inch column. If the underflow of the 36 incher was not as good as that of the 18 incher, short circuiting was a possibility in the larger unit. It had been designed for insertion of drop in partitions, four feed points had been provided and the 36 inch column would have become a modular unit of four 18 inch columns. Testing showed the underflows of both columns to be identical. There was no short circuiting in the 36 inch column. Once we had the 36 incher, we had no fear of the 72 inch column. It is permanently partitioned into four 36 inch columns but uses only one set of instrumentation. All the component parts of the 72 inch column come from the 36 inch unit. In spite of our results, the mining community did not believe the column could work. Finally, in 1980, Mines Gasp6 ordered an 18 and 36 inch column for their byproduct molybdenum

Near Kangiara in south eastern New South Wales, Australia, a number of polymetallic (copper, lead and zinc, with minor silver and gold) mineral deposits occur within a relatively broad volcanic rock belt, intercalated with limestones, sandstones and shales, of Silurian age. The Kangiara deposit was the most significant for the region.Adjacent to the Kangiara deposit, the unaltered country rocks are more rhyolitic than elsewhere in the volcanic rock belt, and the mineralization is accompanied by silicification, chloritization, sericitization and argillization. The host rocks typically contain a higher K20:Na2O ratio than the volcanic rocks not associated with mineralization.In the Kangiara deposit the mineralization consist of massive (in part banded), fragmental, disseminated and vein-type copper-lead-zinc ores, with the massive and fragmental types divisible into pyrite-rich, chalcopyrite-rich and sphalerite-galena-rich varieties. With respect to this mineralogy, the ore textures and sulphur isotope compositions the deposit can be compared to the stratiform mineralization associated with Silurian acid volcanic rocks at Woodlawn, Captains Flat and elsewhere in the Lachlan Fold Belt, as well as the Tertiary Kuroko deposits of Japan.

The distribution of solute during the progressive solidification of dilute Sn-Ag alloys was determined in both solid and liquid as a jbnction of growth rate, rod diameter, temperature gradient, and solute concentration, using radioactive tracer techniques. The results indicated that partial mixing occurs in the liquid during freezing for most of the conditions investigated, approaching complete mixing for larger rod diameters (>2mm) and slow growth rates. Measured solute distributions were fitted to distribution functions based on diffusion controlled solute transport in the liquid state, by treating the normal solute diffusion constant and distribution coefficient as variable solute transport and segregation parameters. Values of these parameters were determined for the growth conditions investigated. Observations were made to determine whether mixing in the liquid was primarily due to volume changes in freezing or to differences in density between solute and solvent. The former effect was investigated using a selected Sn-Bi alloy as a solvent with zero volume change on fusion, and the density effect was studied using vertical solidifications of Sn-In and Sn-Ag alloys, systems having, respectively, very small and large differences in density between solute and solvent. The result indicate that mixing in the liquid cannot be primarily attributed to either volume changes or density differences. THE solute distribution in progressively solidified rods of dilute alloys, in which there is complete mixing in the liquid, is given by the expression1 where C, is the solute concentration in the solid at the point where the fraction g of the material has solidified, C, is the initial solute concentration and k is the equilibrium distribution coefficient. If it is assumed that there is no significant con-vective mixing in the liquid, then the solute distribution in the initial portion of a semi-infinite rod has been calculated to be2 where t is the time from the start of freezing and x1 is the distance in the liquid ahead of the solid-liquid interface at time t. Expressions [1] and [2] describe the limiting cases of solute distribution in the liquid, i.e., complete mixing, or no convective mixing; in practice it might be expected that the solute distribution would be somewhere between these two cases. pfann3 has suggested that Eq. [I] is applicable for partial mixing, as well as complete mixing, if an effective distribution coefficient k1 is used instead satisfactorily describes solute distributions in rods of magnesium, n-g, and b-sb6 alloys that were progressively solidified from the melt without mechanical mixing. The values of kl were observed to depend on the growth rate4-6 and the temperature gradient.6 The purpose of the present investigation was to measure solute distributions in both the solidified rods and the melt as a function of the solidification variables, and to determine to what extent the observed solute distributions could be described by the above theoretical expressions, keeping in mind that expressions [2] and [3] have been derived solely for the case of diffusion controlled solute transport in the liquid and are not theoretically applicable to

Blast fragmentation depends on many factors. First of all, it depends on the specific blast design, which includes the amount and type of explosive, the blasting pattern, the timing and sequencing, and other parameters. Secondly, it depends on the properties of the rock mass, including the uniaxial compressive strength (UCS), the rock mass elastic modulus (E), the rock discontinuity characteristics (as reflected in the GSI or RMR), and the rock density. Several fragmentation models have been proposed to predict blast fragmentation based on the blast design and the properties of the rock. These models include the Kuz-Ram model and variations of this model, as well as recent models by Kim and Kemeny (2011) and others. Fragmentation models are validated and calibrated by comparing the predicted fragmentation with actual post-blast fragmentation from image processing monitoring systems.

[Health and safety hazards from contamination of the atmosphere in places frequented by persons depend to a considerable extent on whether the contaminating agent possesses sense-perceptive properties which will give warning of its presence before it '.an create harmful conditions. If a distinct and easily recognized warning is given in advance of harmful conditions, hazards ace mitigated, but if warning properties are inadequate or absent, the hazards are augmented. When evaluating the hazard presented by a potentially harmful substance used under conditions of possible escape into the air of places frequented by persons, it is therefore necessary to consider the warning properties of the substance along with ether pertinent information such as toxicity, inflammability, physical properties, and mode of use. If the contaminating agent inherently lacks warning; properties it may be possible to impart them by adding to the hazardous substance a small quantity of a relatively harmless substance which has a high warning intensity.]

THE occurrence of the (100) [lOO] or "cube" texture upon annealing of cold-rolled copper has been much investigated.' The conditions favorable for its formation were found to be a high final annealing temperaturez or long annealing time," a high reduction of area in cold rolling prior to the final anneal,' and a small penultimate grain size." The effects of penultimate grain size and of rolling reduction were found by Cook and Richards4 to be interrelated in such a way that any combination of them giving lower than a certain value of the final average thickness of the grains in the rolled material leads to a fairly complete cube texture with a given final annealing time and temperature. Also, according to the same authors, at a higher final annealing temperature a larger average rolled grain thickness, i.e., a lower final rolling reduction, is sufficient than at a lower temperature. These somewhat involved conditions can be understood readily on the basis of recent results obtained at this laboratory. Hsun Hu was able to show recently by means of quantitative pole figure determinations that the rolling texture of tough pitch copper, which is almost identical with that of 2s aluminum: may be described roughly as a scatter around four symmetrical "ideal" orientations not very far from (123) [112]. In the case of aluminum, annealing leads to retain-ment of the rolling texture with some decrease of the scatter around the four "ideal" orientations, and to the appearance of a new texture component, namely the cube texture." A microscopic technique, revealing grain orientations by means of oxide film and polarized light, showed that the retainment of the rolling texture is achieved through two different mechanisms operating simultaneously, namely "re-crystallization in situ," and the formation of strain-free grains in orientations different from their local surroundings, but identical with that of another component of the rolling texture. Thus, a local area in the rolled material, having approximately the orientation of one of the four "ideal" components of the texture, partly retains its orientation during annealing, while recovering from its cold-worked condition, and it is partially absorbed at the same time by invading strain-free grains of an orientation approximately corresponding to that of another "ideal" texture component. The reorientation here, as well as in the formation of the strain-free grains of "cube" orientation, may be described as a [Ill] rotation of about 40°, see Fig. 1 of ref. 6. The preferential growth of grains in such orientations is a result of the high mobility of grain boundaries corresponding to this relative orientation.' " It appears very likely that in copper the mechanism of the structural changes during annealing is similar to that observed in aluminum (except for the much greater frequency of formation of annealing twins in copper). In both metals the new grains of cube orientation have a great advantage over the new grains with orientations close to one of the four components of the rolling texture. This advantage stems from their symmetrical orientation with respect to all four retained rolling texture components of the matrix; they are oriented favorably for growth at the expense of all of these four orientations. As a result, the growth of the "cube grains" is favored over the growth of the others, as soon as the new grains have grown large enough to be in contact with portions of the matrix containing elements of more than one, and preferably of all four component textures. It is clear that this critical size is smaller and, therefore, attained earlier in the annealing process if the structural units, such as grains and kink bands, representing the four matrix orientations are smaller, i. e., if the average thickness of the rolled grains is smaller. Hence, for a given annealing time and temperature, a smaller penultimate grain size and a higher rolling reduction both tend to increase that fraction of the annealing period during which the above condition is satisfied. Consequently, the percentage volume of material assuming the cube orientation increases. The same is true also for increasing time and temperature of annealing when the penultimate grain size and the final rolling reduction are constant, since the average size attained by the new grains during annealing increases with the annealing time and temperature. For the same reason, at higher annealing temperatures a given volume percentage of cube texture can be obtained with larger rolled grain thickness (larger penultimate grain size, or smaller rolling reduction) than at lower annealing temperatures. The well-known conspicuous sharpness of the cube texture may be interpreted as a result of the fact that selective growth of only those grains is favored that have an orientation closely symmetrical with respect to all four components of the deformation texture and exhibit, therefore, a high boundary mobility in contact with each. The effect of alloying elements in suppressing the cube texture, as described by Dahl and Pawlek,' appears to be associated with a change in the rolling texture. For face-centered cubic metals, such as copper, which do exhibit the cube texture upon annealing, the rolling texture is always of the type described above, i. e., scattered around four "ideal orientations" of approximately (123) [112]. The addition of certain alloying elements, such as about 5 pct Zn or 0.05 pct P in copper, has the as yet unexplained effect of changing the rolling texture into the (110) 11121 type. This texture consists of two fairly sharply developed, twin related components. In such cases, as in 70-30 brass and in silver, the annealing texture again is related to the rolling texture by a [lll] rotation of about 30°, however, because of the different rolling texture to start from, it has no cube texture component. At higher temperatures, both in brassm and in silver," grain growth leads to a further change in texture: A [lll] rotation of the same amount, but in reversed direction, back to the original rolling texture.

Polyacrylic acid (P AA) was evaluated as a selective flocculant for dolomite-apatite system. P AA of 4 million MW was found to flocculate both dolomite and apatite. However, their flocculation behavior was significantly different with 450,000 MW PAA which was the lowest molecular weight fraction capable of flocculation. In single mineral tests, at a dosage of 2kg/t 90% of dolomite and 35% of apatite flocculated. Selectivity was achieved in mixed mineral tests where apatite of 90% grade at 70% recovery level was obtained in the concentrate from a feed consisting of 80:20 mixture of apatite and dolomite. The dolomite rejection was about 75% which corresponds to 1% MgO in the concentrate.

"For a drainage channel built in San Juan, Puerto Rico, a value engineering (VE) proposal incorporating a secant pile top-down approach saved time and facilitated construction work on the larger flood control project. The channel, at the Bechara Industrial Area, Puerto Nuevo Port Facility and the Puerto Rico Maritime Shipping Authority Dock, was needed to allow drainage of the Rio Puerto Nuevo into San Juan Bay. The port area, one of the busiest in the Caribbean, has over 6,000 ft (1,800 m) of berthing wharves for ocean-going container ships along with over 500,000 sq ft (46,000 m²) of container loading and unloading areas, and is critical to the local economy.Planners wanted to minimize the impact of construction to the port and dock users, and developed a construction methodology and work sequencing that would prevent a complete barrier to port traffic. This plan involved non-contiguous and limited work area that “leapfrogged” along the alignment so as to prevent long barriers to lateral traffic movement across the culvert alignment.After reviewing the project plans and schedule, Morris-Shea Bridge Company (MSB) proposed an alternate design and construction approach that provided significant cost and schedule benefits, and also provided better access for the port and dock users. The alternate VE proposal involved top-down construction methodology and redesigned drainage culvert geometry with two parallel 2,000 linear ft (lf) (600 m) secant walls installed on each side of the culvert. These walls facilitated excavation and formed part of the culvert permanent walls. The result was a significantly reduced required construction right of way that allowed construction work in contiguous areas largely without impact on ongoing port activity. MSB conceived the design concept, and engineered design and construction of the VE alternate secant pile culvert.The project initially consisted of an open channel in the industrial area picking up water from the existing Rio Puerto Nuevo, transitioning to an enclosed culvert through the port and dock areas, and outfall through the existing dock. The base bid construction included three main areas of work:"

A fundamental study was conducted on a new process for producing scandium (Sc) metal or aluminum-scandium (Al-Sc) alloy by the calciothermic reduction of scandium oxide (Sc2O3). In this study, aluminum (Al) and calcium chloride (CaCl2) were used as the collector metal and flux for the reduction, respectively. A mixture of Sc2O3, Al, and CaCl2 in a tantalum crucible was placed inside a stainless steel reaction container, and the feed mixture was reacted with calcium (Ca) vapor at 1273 K for 6 h. After the reduction experiment, the reaction product (CaO), CaCl2 flux, and excess Ca reductant were removed from the obtained alloy sample by leaching with an aqueous solution. The formation of Al3Sc in the Al matrix phase of the alloy was confirmed by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and electron microprobe analysis (EPMA). This result indicates that Sc2O3 was successfully reduced to metallic Sc and alloyed in situ to form liquid Al-Sc alloy during the reduction. When Al was not used in the reduction experiment, a complex oxide (CaSc2O4) was formed, and the reduction was incomplete. This study demonstrates that the Al-Sc alloy can be directly produced by calciothermic reduction using CaCl2 flux and Al collector metal.

Estimated costs and revenues can be used in evaluating postmining land use alternatives. However, postmining land use decisions have to be made in an environment complicated by several additional factors. These factors, including cultural, natural, and managerial issues, are not as easily quantified as costs and revenues but may be more important determinants. There fore, some approach is needed to attach relative weight to the various factors. The concept of fuzzy sets assembled into a structured hierarchy facilitates analysis of the relative value of individual factors and their impact on each alternative under consideration. In this paper, a method is presented that employs fuzzy set analysis to evaluate postmining land use plans on the basis of these nonquantitative factors.

When a large area of open gob collapses suddenly, a windblast is produced that can cause considerable damage throughout the infrastructure of a mine. In a few cases, the windblast has been accompanied by ignitions of methane and/or coal dust. This paper describes the conduct and results of laboratory tests involving the compression of mixtures of air, methane and coal dust under a falling weight and while allowing controlled escape of the mixture. The transient responses on pressure and temperature sensors were recorded. In addition to an analysis of those records, the paper highlights those conditions in which ignitions occurred.

This is one of a series of reports prepared by the Federal Bureau of Mines on mining methods, performance, and costs at individual mines in the United States. The primary purpose of these papers is to promote development and conservation of our mineral resources by disseminating technological information on methods, practices, and results that may be applied to the engineering analysis and solution of mining problems. This report discusses the highly selective mining methods of the Jaquays Mining Corp. at the Regal asbestos mine, 45 road miles northeast of Globe, Ariz. The milling method at the Globe plant is discussed briefly, and the extraction ratios of the various grades of fiber are tabulated. The proposed flowsheet of a new mill under construction is shown.
