The conventional role of exploration, development and grade control is examined in this paper within the context of the many and varied types of gold occurrences which are found at the Dome Nine. The account endeavours to trace the development of the total ore evaluation process, from diamond drilling through the exploration and drifting stage, to the stope development and planning phase of the operation, with an emphasis on sampling techniques and assaying procedure. The concept of ore reserve calculations is developed and the practice of grade control is described. In summary, the role of the geological, the engineering and the mining department is presented in relation to the contribution each has to make in the evaluation and exploitation of ore from one of the world's classic Archean gold deposits.

The production of portland cement requires that four basic elements -- calcium, silica, alumina and iron -- be ground to a fine powder, homogenized, and fed to the pyroprocessing unit, where it is burned to a cement clinker. The raw material must either be ground wet in a slurry form or dried and ground to a dry powder, with a fineness of approximately 85% passing the 200 M screen. According to the Portland Association's Plant Information Summary, approximately 38% of the U.S. capacity is ground wet and 62% ground dry. Calcined bauxites are classified by their major end uses - abrasives and refractories. Target properties are dictated by application and processing requirements. The chemical and physical properties of premium grade calcined bauxites are far more stringent than metallurgical bauxite and this limits the sources and availability. Premium grade calcined bauxites are considered to be strategically critical to the industrialized countries of the world. Subject to disruptions in the key source countries, adequate supplies of premium grade calcined bauxites are anticipated in the foreseeable future.

A patent-applied-for process has been developed in which zinc chloride is extracted by tributyl phosphate in kerosine, and stripped with ethylene glycol or ammoniated ethylene glycol. The anhydrous zinc chloride is precipitated from the glycol as the ammine and zinc chloride is prepared by thermal decomposition with recycle of ammonia. The process permits the production of high grade zinc from scraps and drosses. Its applicability to the recycling of zinc will be illustrated.

Laguna del Rey is the name of a dry lake bed located in the State of Coahuila, Mexico in a semi-desertic terrain typical of the basin and range physiography. Química del Rey, S.A., a subsidiary of Industrias Peñoles, has been producing sodium sulphate since 20 years ago, from brines pumped from the sub-surface of the present playa. The spent brine is used as raw material for the production of magnesium oxide. An extensive, lenticular deposit is found just below the playa. It consists mostly of glauberite (sodium-calcium sulphate) and blöedite (sodium-magnesium sulphate). The glauberite occurs as thin crystals oriented at random and leave many void spaces among them. These intercrystalline spaces are partly filled with mud, but the whole mass of the evaporite is still very porous. A brine that contains in solution ions of sodium, magnesium, sulphate and chlorine occupies the voids of the sponge-like evaporite body.

Geophysical borehole logging is a valuable and inexpensive tool for coal deposit evaluation, development, and production. In addition to the usual determinations of depth and seam thickness, geophysical borehole logs can effectively and accurately determine the coal ash, moisture, and heat contents in situ. Location and evaluation of the partings can be done quickly and accurately. Overburden character determination, such as roof competence, dewatering parameters, ripability, trace element content of the coal and overburden, and sulfur content can be done with existing tools and techniques. The quality of such determinations depends upon the quality of planning and calibration.

Due to the current cost and availability of crude oil in Brazil, Samarco Mineracao S. A., as part of its program of quality and productivity optimization and reduction of operating costs, has undertaken tests to utilize alternate energy sources for fuel oil used in its pelletizing plant at Point Ubu, Espirito Santo, Brazil. The energy program undertaken by Samarco consists of two basic steps. The first step was to reduce energy consumption, that is, to improve the thermal efficiency of the process. Secondly, a program was started to substitute the fuel oil with coal.

The purpose of this paper is to inform members of the coal producing and consuming community about techniques used by The Carter Mining Company to control product quality at a large surface coal mining operation. During the early years of mining operations, coal quality received adequate attention but the Company's main emphasis was to build up its production rate and minimize mining costs. While these goals are still of prime importance, coal quality has received substantial attention in recent years. A Company guideline that no coal shipment shall exceed any contract or company-imposed coal quality specification has been successfully implemented. To implement this guideline, geology and coal quality modeling procedures were improved, in-pit drilling and blending programs were refined, and detailed shipment procedures were developed. Background Surface coal mining of subbituminous C rank coal in the Cillette. (Campbell County) Wyoming area has become increasingly competitive during recent years. Prior to 1974, one small surface mine produced coal for local consumption. During the last ten years, 13 new surface coal mines have been constructed. Coal production from Campbell County, Wyoming totalled 88 million short tons (79.8 million metric tons) in 1983, the majority being shipped to electric utilities in the central and southern United States via unit trains having a capacity of 10,000 short tons (9,072 metric tons).

During the past ten years, the US coal industry has experimented with various ways to extract methane from coal seams. Drilling long horizontal boreholes in solid coal from mine workings and vertical gob degas boreholes are becoming standard techniques for methane recovery from coal seams. Prime motivations for such work have always been safety and productivity in mines, but the commercial value of gas so produced is encouraging utilization. The paper reviews various ways to produce methane from coal seams and discusses some utilization projects extant in the industry.

The remarks that follow are based substan¬tially on experience covering 45 years, 80% of which have been in placer work, rather than on a review of available literature. Most commercial placers have been deposited by the action of water. The richer and more-difficult-to-mine placers are those in the headwater areas where gradients are steepest. The most lucrative placers are generally in intermediate areas where volumes are greater, fewer boulders are present, and gradients are from 3% to 1 ½ . The higher volume, lower grade placers are in the lower reaches of river systems where gradients are lower. Where gold-bearing rivers have discharged into the sea, wave action can concentrate values on beaches, past and present.

The CH Leaching process is a new, more sophisticated, form of gold, silver, uranium and sulfide copper heap leaching wherein each layer of a multi-layered heap is divided into a number of independent cells, each of which are successively formed and leached in the top layer of the heap to their maximum economic recoveries, and then rinsed and sealed from further leaching. Triangular earth berms form the outside walls of the heap and a gridwork of rock-filled berms on top of the bottom pad form independent under- heap solution storage zones. The high degree of solution recirculation and staging that occurs in this process produces a relatively small volume of very rich pregnant solution. The cellular heap design and its mode of operation result in a uniform, intensive, long-term leach for all of the ore particles in the heap. Besides improved metal recoveries, the process appears to have several cost and operating advantages. In the CR2MR process, sulfuric acid and a soluble sulfide are added to a gold and/or silver pregnant leach liquor to precipitate most of the contained silver, mercury, copper, etc. as sulfides at a pH below 2.5. The other product of the reaction is solubilized HCN. Following a liquid-solid separation step, cyanide is regenerated in the supernatant solution by raising the pH to a level above 9.0. This process regenerates a portion of the cyanide used in the leaching step, removes contaminant ion species (silver, copper, mercury, etc.) from the leach solution and, in a subsequent step, recovers the gold in an enriched form. It is believed that substantial cost savings may be experienced by the use of this process in some gold and/or silver leach systems.

Coca Mines Inc. is a medium sized company exploring for and developing precious metal properties in the Western United States. They own interests in a number of properties which contain reserves of gold and silver. Corrosion studies in laboratory ball mills and grinding environment simulations produce corrosion rates and total metal removal rates much lower than those recorded in operating production ball mills. The corrosion component of ball metal loss in commercial mills represents less than 10% of the total loss expressed as micrometers/hour of exposure in recent USBM tests. Such small absolute losses are consistent with ball metal loss measured in production ball mill marked ball wear tests to determine effects of corrosion and abrasion resisting properties of alloys in operating mills which indicate that metal hardness and microstructure determine relative metal loss rates of a given situation. The combination of ore characteristics and grinding process dynamics determine metal loss severity. Alloying for corrosion resistance and modification of the milling corrosion environment yield relatively small metal loss reductions. Alloying and heat treatment to produce high hardness and microstructures of high carbon martensite and for cast irons, M7C3 carbides produces the lowest metal losses in typical wet grinding applications.

DEFINITION OF BAUXITE The term "bauxite" (1) dates back to 1821, when it was assigned to a deposit of red earthy material outcropping near the village of Les Baux in Southern France. Chemical analysis indicated the presence of aluminium oxide, iron oxide and water. Deposits of bauxite are widespread throughout the world although the major developments occur within 30 degrees of the Equator. Essentially bauxite is the product of weathering and leaching of a variety of sediments or rocks, generally in a high-rainfall tropical or sub-tropical climate, resulting in the enrichment of the aluminium oxide content. It is characterised by the presence of one or more of the minerals, gibbsite, boehmite, and diaspore. The other constituents are usually clay, (typically kaolin), hematite and/or goethite (iron-oxides), anatase (titanium oxide), and possibly silica as quartz. A variety of minor elements may be present, such as calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, vanadium, gallium, manganese, and many others in very small quantities. Organic compounds are normally present from development in association with a soil horizon where vegetation may be encouraged by the high rainfall necessary for bauxitisition. The physical form depends upon the geological history of the deposit and correlation also exists with the mineralogy. Older deposits which have been subject to burial are invariably hard and compact with the alumina predominantly occurring as boehmite or diaspore, while the more recent, surface deposits are frequently less compacted and gibbsite is the dominant alumina mineral. In these later deposits, the physical form can vary from the fine red soil (terra rosa) of Jamaica to the Weipa pisolites to the cemented Arkansas type. The presence of concretionary structures is an important aid in identification in the field.

The run-of-mine coals in the U.S. being fed to coal cleaning plants have become increasingly finer due to the adoption of modern, mechanized mining methods, and economics are dictating that finer fractions, as well as the coarser fractions, be cleaned. Traditional dewatering methods (vacuum disc filters and centrifuges) are proving inadequate for preparing fine refuse for disposal or fine coal product for downstream handling. The Electric Power Research Institute has been supporting research into the nature and limitations of mechanical dewatering, and novel ways of improving it. The efficiency of various silicone-based chemicals at aiding dewatering was investigated, and it was shown that the final moisture content of hydrophilic coals after vacuum Filtration could be reduced by 1 to 5% with up to 40% increase in filtration rate by addition of one of several of these silicones. EPRI also has an on-going program at its Coal Cleaning Test Facility to investigate the performance of the Larox pressure filter in comparison with that of the disc filter and solid bowl centrifuge. While improvements to the dewatering performance currently being obtained in existing operating plants by such means are achieveable, a fundamental study has shown that, regardless of changes in operating conditions, there may be a limit to the lowest cake moisture content attainable by mechanical dewatering of a given sample of coal fines. Determination of this limit for a specific coal would be useful in designing facilities to dry and handle it.

In 1967, development of the Cyprus Thompson Creek molybdenum deposit began near Challis, ID. The first mining claims were staked on an intrusive rock out-crop. Exploration continued for 14 years. In 1978, the decision was made to develop the deposit. In Dec. 1980, approval was received for the environmental impact statement and facilities construction and waste rock removal began. By the middle of 1983, 126 Mt (139 million st) of rock had been removed and all facilities completed. Location The Thompson Creek project is located about 58 km (36 miles) southwest of Challis in Custer County, in south central Idaho. The mine and mill are situated between 2.2 and 2.6 km (7,217 and 8,530 ft) in elevation. The project is located in an isolated area. This paper describes a Mixed Integer Linear Programming model that was developed for planning the coal operations at Mountain Coals, Inc., in Kentucky. The model incorporates the use of stockpiles as practiced and allows the operator to find the least cost combination of raw coal feeds, washing densities and blending to produce the different quality coals as required by the coal contracts.

Chain pillar design formula under weak roof condition was developed by statistically analyzing the results from the three dimensional finite element parametric analyses. The parameters such as mechanical properties of the roof and floor strata, overburden depth, panel width and length, and coal strength were incorporated in the formula. A conversion formula which transfers a rectangular chain pillar into a square chain pillar of equal strength is proposed. The influence of high in-situ horizontal stresses, which are often encountered in the coalfield, on chain pillar stability is also discussed.

Houston International Minerals Borealis Project is an open pit heap leach operation. The operation uses open pit mining, two stage crushing, agglomeration, heap leaching, zinc precipitation and induction refining to produce approximately 50,000 ounces of gold per year. Due to the ore being extremely ameanable to heap leach processing techniques, low manpower requirements and efficient management, the operation is one of the lowest cost gold producing operations in the United States.

Hanna has developed three production planning systems to help the mine engineers determine the sequence of mining from available ore supples. The Production Scheduling System was developed to give the staff a tool for long range planning by sequencing the removal of blocks from an open pit property. It was needed to determine the year of removal for each block so that the optimum present-valued pit limits could be established by our pit design program. Since in this type of planning short term grade control is less of a factor than it is in daily or monthly planning, the system gives the program greater control and more latitude in block selection. It permits only full blocks to be taken.
