Improvement of current leaching technology was found necessary when processing ores which are more difficult to leach because they generate highly viscous, air-rejective pulps. Cyanidation of these pulps has to run at low oxygen concentrations if the conventional aeration technique with compressed air is used. Since the dissolution rate of precious metals mainly depends on the concentration of dissolved oxygen in the pulp [1, 4, 5], the kinetics of the gold extraction become slow in such cases, which in turn often leads to a significant decrease in the overall gold output within the conventional leaching time of up to 48 hours.

Resource Technology Associates (RTA) has developed a flocculation-flotation process that increases phosphate recoveries from current operating plants. A major advantage of the process is the ability to float the phosphate from the matrix without a preliminary separation to remove the slimes. A majority of the material that is now discarded in the slime fraction will be recovered in the new process. The process can also be used to recover phosphate material from current slime ponds either as a separate feed or mixed with matrix material. Flotation tails from the process demonstrate improved dewatering characteristics then those seen from conventional float tails.

In response to a request from the Mine Safety and Health Administration, the Bureau of Mines has recently completed a respirable dust survey of 18 U.S. coal preparation plants. Of these, three were essentially free of dust problems. Respirable dust exposure of workers in the remaining plants depended on the time spent in the dusty areas. In five of the plants surveyed, Bureau tests showed that in some areas worker exposures could exceed Federal dust limits in less than 2 hours.

Many coal preparation plants discard fine coal (generally minus 100 mesh) because it is difficult to beneficiate economically. At the Kentucky Energy Cabinet Laboratory (KECL), the waste streams from several Kentucky preparation plants were evaluated for cleaning with counter-current column flotation. A series of performance evaluations were conducted using a 0.05 m (2 in.) internal diameter (I.D.) 7.9 m (26 ft.) high laboratory column. The objectives of these tests were to assess the performance in terms of recovery and percent ash in clean coal and to optimize the operating parameters relative to combustible recovery and grade. Refuse streams containing 30-50 percent ash were upgraded to 2-8 percent ash with Btu recoveries of nearly 90 percent. A pilot scale column flotation cell was installed at the Bell County Coal preparation plant. This pilot plant utilized a 5.79 m (19 ft.) high and 0.15 m (6 in.) I.D. column to verify the performance data of the 0.05 m (2 in.) I.D. column for two different waste streams. Performance evaluation and pilot plant testing results related to scale-up are discussed.

INTRODUCTION Coal is geologically a sedimentary rock with distinct bedding planes containing a mixture of petrographic constituents. Yet. because of its chemical nature, it also has some of the characteristics of a polymeric material. In addition, it is extensively precracked to give a macropore structure and also has a substantial internal volume of microporosity. Add to this the mineral constituents dispersed in the coal in a variety of forms and sizes. and it can be readily appreciated that coal is a complex and heterogeneous material. It has to date not been possible to predict the particle size distributions produced by breakage of coals from a priori application of the principles of fracture mechanics. However, there is a substantial body of data resulting from empirical observation of size distributions produced under various conditions, primarily from grinding mills. It is the function of this review to outline how this empirical information can be used to predict product size distributions for those systems which have been studied systematically, and to suggest future avenues of research using similar methodology. FRACTURE THEORY APPLIED TO COAL It is, of course, possible to devise experiments for slow crack propagation in a coal. However, the evidence is that coal breaks by brittle fracture in the mills and mining machines of industrial importance and therefore the theory of brittle fracture is sufficient to illustrate the important features of the fracture of coal. In order to produce size reduction a solid must be stressed by the application of force. The force can be a tensile (stretching), compressive, or shear force, and the three dimensional stress pattern in the solid represents the tensile, compressive, and shear forces per unit area acting in any direction through any point in the solid. As an illustration consider the case of a simple one-dimensional tensile stress: then stress is defined as a=F/A where F is the force. A is the cross-sectional area of the solid normal to F and strain. E, is defined as the fractional change in the length of the solid. so that E= x/L where x is the extension of an original length of L. Coal behaves as an elastic material over short times (although viscoelastic creep can occur if the stress is maintained over long times) and if it is not stretched too far the coal returns to its original shape when the stress is removed; otherwise catastrophic failure occurs and the coal fractures at a stress termed the tensile strength. The failure under stress of an elastic material is termed brittle fracture. Elastic material fails at small stain and the stress-stain relation to where brittle fracture occurs is the empirical Hooke's law. a= YE, where Y is Young's modulus. The work done on the solid to take the solid from zero external stress to a stressed state by slowly increasing F up to a final stress u is the integral of the stress times the strain. This reversible strain energy is stored in the solid and. using Hooke's law. is u /2Y per unit volume of solid. If the solid is immediately loaded to u the work done is [EAuL] which Is a2 /Y per unit volume, that is, twice the reversible work.

A computer model was used to simulate the effect of leakage through confining beds on a hypothetical in situ leach operation in an aquifer with a thin mineralized section. The simulations were used to assess economic and potential environmental implications of leakage on an in situ leach operation. Four scenarios were modeled - three representing cases with different degrees of confinement, and the fourth representing a stratified ore zone under a low degree of confinement. The model simulated the travel path and travel time of lixiviant given the hydraulic conditions prescribed in each scenario. The results show that the travel path and travel times vary by about 10% for confinement ranging from nearly impermeable (essentially no leakage) to an extremely low level (thin confinement with a permeability about equal to that of the aquifer) for isotropic aquifer conditions. The aquifer thickness contacted by the lixiviant varied from 85% to 90%. Horizontally, 55% to 60% of the aquifer was contacted. The flow paths in the stratified aquifer were reduced in the vertical direction and expanded horizontally. Forty- five percent of the aquifer thickness was contacted vertically with 88% contacted horizontally. Break- through time for lixiviant traveling at mid-depth of the aquifer increased two times when the leakage was increased from nearly zero to a value representative of thin and highly permeable confinement. Leakage affects the economics of in situ mining by (1) increasing the time required to leach out the ore, and (2) increasing the thickness of the ore zone aquifer to be restored. The potential for environmental impacts appears to be minor. In all four simulations, the lixiviant did not contact the confining strata. Restoration would be limited to cleanup of the ore zone aquifer within the thickness contacted by lixiviant and within the radius of the lixiviant that traveled farthest away from the production cell.

Drainage of tailings impoundments is a key issue for impoundment stability, water control, seepage control, and reclamation. Drainage control is an established operating practice where climate and site conditions permit, such as in South Africa and various mines in North America. In these areas, drainage control is primarily used to maximize tailings densities and to provide adequate impoundment stability. Drainage practices during operation also become an important issue when tailings impoundments are reclaimed. Time required for cover placement and post- reclamation seepage control depends greatly on the ability for tailings to drain and consolidate. This paper discusses drainage issues associated with gold tailings impoundments in terms of mechanics of saturated and unsaturated flow and experience with design and reclamation of tailings impoundments.

A computer-oriented systems simulator (CMHS) has been developed for analysis of continuous materials handling systems. Special emphasis has been placed in the model on several features which are unique to these systems. These features include periodic pattern of material arrival from several sources, several types of material to be transferred, material dispatch processes, intermediate storage capacities, and multiple material destinations. Both the deterministic factors of the continuous material handling system such as the physical decomposition of the system and the scheme and schedule of its operation and the stochastic factors such as variations of material arrival, material pattern on the conveyor, and avail-abilities of the system elements are considered in the simulator.

Hornestake's Mclaughlin Mine is the first commercial application of pressure oxidation pretreatment of gold prior to cyanidation. Inherent to the autoclave process are several liquid/solid separations. Flocculant consumption represents a significant portion of the consumable reagent costs at McLaughlan. This paper focuses on the efforts of the Operating, Metallurgy and Engineering groups to improve thickener operation and minimize flocculant consumption. An operating philosophy incorporating feed solids control, increasing flocculant dilution water and minimizing flocculant solution shear has resulted in a reduction in 1986 flocculant costs of $0.054/t ($0.06 st) versus 1985 costs. Additional changes are projected to result in a further cost reduction of $0.20/t ($0.22/.st) in 1987.

INTRODUCTION In looking over the diversity of the papers that are being presented during this meeting on The Industrial Practice of Fine Coal Processing one cannot help but be impressed with the progress the industry has made in beneficiating fine raw coals, and in the number of innovations that are under study to increase recovery and to improve the quality of the finest size particles produced at a preparation plant. Those who are not in our industry, who look at the technical program, might be confused, when they see that the papers include such topics as cleaning to zero and heavy media cyclone cleaning 28M x 100M; application and performance of fine coal jigs, tables, hydrocyclones, spirals, and flotation; filtration, dewatering and thermal drying; and ancilliary aspects such as fines handling, instrumentation and process control plus screening and liberation. This is an observation and not a criticism of the diversity of papers being presented. The program fits within the parameters of fine coal preparation as the term "coal preparation" is defined, but perhaps not as the term "fine coal" is defined. Admittedly these definitions are sometimes loose. However, each should be made more definitive if a meaningful fine coal preparation overview is to be possible. COAL PREPARATION DEFINED In the opinion of the writer, the term "coal preparation" should be defined as including all work activities that are performed on all components of a run-of-mine coal from the time it leaves a surface reserve or an underground portal, until all components are either ready for shipment or are stowed on, or in the earth in an environmentally acceptable manner. This definition excludes the work that is performed to improve coal quality or handleability inside the mine or pit. This work is commonly called "face" or "pit" preparation. FINE COAL DEFINED The term "fine coal" means different things to different people. In the past, anthracite finer than No. 3 Buckwheat (3/16 in.) was considered fines which often were discarded from the breaker as an unsalable by product; and bituminous coals finer that about 1/4 in. (slack) were either discarded or sold at cost to prevent an accumulation of "no bills" which referred to a product having no immediate sale. Although a standard definition of "fine coal" is yet to be accepted by the industry, a designation of coals by particle-size range has evolved through the wide use of three-circuit flowsheets, wherein the optimum size range by washer type determines the size fractions: a coarse-coal circuit for the plus 3/8 in., a -11- coal circuit for the 3/8 in. x 28 Mesh, and a fine-coal circuit for the remaining 28 Mesh x 0. Logically, the term "fine coal" should refer to some resultant size fraction or some top size by zero. This definition should include a 28 Mesh x 0 feed to a flotation cell but should exclude a 28 x 100 Mesh size fraction fed to a heavy media cyclone. Failure to include the resultant sizes in the definition precludes accounting of the full range of particle sizes present in the feed to the plant. Since the 28 Mesh x 0 fraction is treated in the final circuit of the three discreet washing circuits, now almost always used in U.S. commercial applications, and since it contains all of its resultant sizes, in the writer's opinion, it should be designated "fine coal". FINE COAL CLEANING Cleaning coal fines, which in the past was at best marginally profitable, is now an essential part of coal preparation strategy for a number of reasons : 1. Introduction Thick seams constitute a considerable portion of Polish coal reserves. In producing mines and those under construction, the reserves where the height is more than 4.5 m (15 ft) total about 24v0 of all the hard coal reserves. The reserves that are under urban and industrial areas can be extracted using stowing methods for surface protection. About 50v0 of thick seam reserves can be extracted by caving methods. Thick seam mining methods Thick seams are usually extracted by multilift methods. There are some methods of thick seam mining that generally can be divided into caving and stowing methods. The stowing method is more expensive, but must be used when mining to protect surface features. The more known methods of thick seam mining include: • extraction of thick seam in ascending order with stowing; • thick seam mining in descending order with consolidated stowing; • thick seam mining with gob consolidation; • thick seam mining in descending order with roof caving; • sublevel caving thick seam mining system; and • thick seam mining system using an artificial roof. • Thick seam mining with introduction of an artificial roof The most advantageous method of thick seam mining is the method using an artificial roof. The artificial roof usually consists of wire mesh. Such wire mesh must be durable and must prevent small rock fragments from passing through. The mesh is usually made of steel properly protected against corrosion. The artificial roof is placed on the coal floor of the top slice (Fig. 1). Caving rock falls on the artificial roof and is thus separated from the coal. The next slice is extracted under the artificial roof. The producing face of the next slice must progress within 10 m (33 ft) behind the front of the first slice. As the second producing face progresses, the wire mesh moves down on the coal floor and may be used as an artificial roof for the next slice. Thus, one artificial roof allows the extraction of several consecutive slices. Application of the artificial roof allows for clean extraction and reduces coal losses. It also eliminates the hazard of spontaneous combustion. Introduction of the artificial roof has been limited due to a lack of artificial roof laying equipment. Manual laying of wire mesh is a labor-intensive operation, and it delays face progress, resulting in poor productivity. To eliminate these problems, artificial roof laying equipment was designed at the Polish Central Mining Institute. The support and the method of laying operation is covered by a patent. Underground mine planning is largely manual and can demand considerable resources to generate a working plan and to perform limited tests of sensitivity to variations in geological and mining conditions. It is possible to use computer aided mine planning to automate many of the manual procedures to allow the planner to evaluate a number of layouts, extraction strategies, and schedules. his paper examines the simulation and scheduling of an under- ground coal mine operation through the-use of on- screen graphics. The simulation will provide a basis for predicting productivity and other relevant information over a specified number of shifts. The software developed is extremely user friendly and reduces the tedium of repetitive manual calculations inherent to mine planning and drafting to a minimum, thus offering considerable savings in an area that is widely recognized as extremely labor intensive.

Lateritic gold has been the object of study only for a very few years, though nuggets have been mentioned in earlier works even as early as 1984 by Hartt in Brazil. In Mato Grosso State, lateritisation is intense, as is common in all tropical forest areas of the world. Exploration has revealed the presence of recoverable "nugget gold" of variable sizes (30 - 200 gms) but frequently of good size (0 - 40 gms), especially near Cuiaba and Alta Floresta regions. In both of them the host system is a lateritised breccia indicative of a fault or shear zone breccia, though in different lithological domains. The Cuiaba occurrences are phyllitic and show a profile as follows, from top to bottom: 1) Compact ferralite crust. 2) Oolitic to pisolitic compact crust (+ some gold). 3) Mottled concretionary laterite crust. 4) Lateritised "eluvial material" (gold nuggets). 5) Mottled patchy to banded laterite. 6) Banded lateritised phyllite with lenticular to banded goethite. 7) Altered red goethitic phyllite, with quartz veins (+ fine gold). 8) Unaltered grey phyllite with quartz veins (Protore). The Alta Floresta-Juruena River occurrences are volcano-sedimentary and show a profile as follows: 1) Deep brown siltitic, argillaceous and arenaceous material with organic matter (+ gold). 2) Modular and concretionary laterite, compact and indurated, with arsenophyrite in quartz fragments (gold nuggets). 3) Band with silty-clayey matrix and arenaceous in nature. 4) Bedrock meta-arcosian arenite. 5) Volcano-sedimentary with rhyodacites and andesitic basalts, with intercalations of arkosic and greywacke nature. Breccias and quartz veins, and granites associated in different portions (Protore).

The use of froth flotation as a means of separating and upgrading sulfide mineral concentrates is standard industrial practice throughout the world. Froth flotation is also widely recognized to be a very complex system having highly interactive and often self-compensating factors at work. Several summary articles have been recently published which discuss at length some of the important practical aspects of optimizing the use of existing commercial flotation reagents. Klimpel (1987). Klimpel and Hansen (1987a), Klimpel and Hansen (1987b), and Klimpel (1988). It is apparent from monitoring the industrial practice of sulfide mineral flotation over the last decade that considerable progress has been made in optimizing the operating aspects of flotation. For example, the availability of improved instrumentation and related computer devices, modified mechanical flotation cell designs, better reagent dosage control leading to less reagent usage per ton of ore, blending of feed ores, more attention to coarse and fine particle flotations, etc., are all examples of this progress.

Using theory of network planning together with graph theory, an algorithm is presented that creates canonical diagrams for mine ventilation networks (M VN). The data generated by the algorithm is used in the construction and plotting phases of a program that automatically plots the canonical diagrams, which can then be used for further studies of a given MVN.

Cyclones installed in three closed- circuit grinding systems were changed from conventional, vertical mounting to horizontal mounting with a favorable improvement in classification efficiency. In two of the installations, apex plugging problems were eliminated because horizontal mounting permit- ted the use of much larger apex orifices. Marked reduction in circulating load was accompanied by greatly reduced maintenance requirements for the cyclone and the cyclone feed pump in one of the installations.

Cominco Metals, in cooperation with two Canadian Universities and the Government of Canada, is developing applications for column flotation in the treatment of lead and zinc ores. Plant scale results at Polaris and pilot plant studies of Sullivan, Pine Point and Red Dog ores show column flotation to have significant advantages over conventional mechanical flotation for lead and zinc cleaning. Results from these ongoing studies are discussed in relation to ore texture, mineral recovery, impurity behaviour, scale-up and control.

There are similarities, and differences, in the surfactants used in cosmetics and detergents. In both applications anionic surfactants constitute the major category. Their main function is to clean, i.e. remove grease and particulate matter from fibrous or hard surface substrates. Cationic surfactants are used for conditioning substrates. Nonionic surfactants can function as a substrate cleanser but are seldom used as such in cosmetics; however, selected non-ionics are often employed as a primary emulsifier. Several specialized nonionic surfactants are used as a secondary surfactant in formulations to promote foaming and emulsification. Specific examples and modes of action of surfactants will be presented.

12.1 INTRODUCTION This chapter deals with the tools required to design leach operations to minimize spillage from leach pads and ponds and erosion damage during flood events or prolonged wet periods. It outlines methods used to design for prolonged dry periods when water shortage can be a problem. Seasonal operational aspects such as winter shutdown and coping with spring snowmelt periods are also discussed. General criteria useful when designing pregnant and barren solution ponds are also outlined. The aim of these notes is to provide designers and operators with a simp1ified approach to developing design parameters which make effective surface water management easy to achieve without resorting to extensive or elaborate analyses. Section 12.2 briefly outlines the types of problems associated with wet climates and floods, as well as dry periods. Determination of flood design parameters is discussed in Section 12.3. Circuit water balance and pond sizing are outlined in Section 12.4. Pond design considerations are included in Section 12.5. Worked examples are included in Section 12.6. 12.2 RAINFALL/RUNOFF PROCESSES There are two types of rainfall-runoff processes that are important when designing heap leach facilities. The first of- these is the short-term, intense rainfall or snowmelt events that occur over a period of a few minutes or hours, causing flooding that can lead to erosion damage and overtopping of ponds and containment dikes. Specific problems that can manifest themselves during these events include: • Washout of access roads; • Damage to containment dikes; • Flood water contamination of circuit water; • Damage to process water ponds by perimeter erosion or overtopping and erosion; • Loss of process circuit fluid due to breaks in containment dikes or process water ponds; and • Erosion of leach pile and consequent sediment contamination of process fluid. Other types of rainfall -runoff processes that could cause problems are the long-term-(generally months-long) wet or dry periods. Extended wet periods
