The Bureau of Mines, as part of a program to improve mine planning and development, is currently investigating the effects of pillar load transfer, which can impact mining operations within a multiple-seam configuration. A comparative study was performed at two separate mine sites to determine the effects of this load transfer mechanism. The Bureau installed and monitored instrumentation at both sites to gather pertinent data on rock mechanics. At mine site A overburden depth varied dramatically in the vicinity of the study area and reached a topographic high at the study site: inner burden thickness was less than a pillar width (40 to 45 ft) (12 to 14 m): floor heaving was experienced in both coalbeds where sandstone and/or shale floor units were observed: overlays of the mine layouts show pillars were not totally super-positioned: a maximum of 5 in (13 cm) of roof to floor convergence was measured and pressure readings indicated pillar core loading only and increased to a maximum of 7,000 psig (48,300 kPa) over instrument setting pressure.

Aluminum silicate hydrosol synthesis and characterization are discussed. Plausible polymeric aluminosilicate species are presented together with their effect on electrokinetics of selected minerals and flotation response of various ores. The addition of aluminosilicate hydrosol to porphyry and oxide copper ores and to a tungsten ore resulted in enhanced flotation recoveries ranging from about 1.5 to 5 percent. A significant portion of the nation's mineral resources are presently lost in the form of particles with very fine grain size. In the case of copper, for example, approximately 225 million tons of ore are concentrated by flotation per year in the United States. Total losses from porphyry ores are generally 15 to 20 percent with half of these losses being finely-divided copper sulfide minerals which do not respond to flotation. The additional 5 to 10 percent loss is the result of copper oxide minerals which are not floated. The losses of copper sulfide minerals are thought to be due in part to the lack of appropriate dispersion of the finely-divided solids less than 20 microns in size. To effect dispersion in flotation systems, sodium silicate is commonly added. Enhanced dispersion effectiveness is achieved when polyvalent metal salts are combined with sodium silicate. Since originally described by Patek (1), numerous workers have explored the utility of metal silicates. Makrousov (2), Belash et al. (3), and Eigeles (1950) (4) showed the applicability of these reagents to calcite/apatite and fluorite/calcite ores. Mercade (5, 6) reported depression of calcite in the presence of 3.33/1 mole ratio Al/Si hydrosols prepared from Type N sodium silicate (Si02/Na20 ratio 3.22/1) and 1% A12(SO4) 3•18H20 solutions. He importantly observed that the colloidal precipitates did not play a significant role in dispersion and depression but that the soluble species were responsible for this action. Patented work by this author described metal silicates used to depress calcite in scheelite flotation using 1% metal salt (FeSO4•7H2O, CoSO4•7H2O, etc.) and 5% Type N sodium silicate solutions to produce hydrosols with Si/Fe or Si/Co ratios of 8.79/1. Aluminum (III) ion systems were less effective as depressants than the iron and cobalt systems. Yang (8, 9) has studied metal silicate sols for use in the flotation of lithium and ultra-fine hematite ores. Using 10/1 Si/Fe mole ratio hydrosols prepared from 2% ferric nitrate, Fe(NO3)3.9H20, and 5% Type N sodium silicate solutions, solutions, he showed that the hydrosols either modify the slime particle surfaces or are adsorbed on the slime particles preventing anionic collector adsorption. In a subsequent patent, Yang also reported the use of these hydrosols as dispersants for beneficiation of lithium ores. Recent studies of aluminum silicate hydrosols in the flotation of chalcocite, chalcopyrite and scheelite have been reported using Si/Al dispersants prepared from 5% Type N sodium silicate and 0.1 M aluminum chloride (A1C13.6H20) solutions. Dispersant properties were shown to be dependent upon the method of synthesis, supernatant pH, and the hydrosol Si/Al mole ratio. Polymeric soluble species in these hydrosolsupernatants have been proposed as the active dispersant species. Aluminosilicate hydrosols are synthesized by the general reaction scheme presented in Figure 1. Commercial sodium silicates are available with ratios of SiO2 to Na20 of 1.60-3.25. The sample which is most frequently employed is Type N whose ratio of Si02/Na20 is 3.22/1.00. Gel filtration chromatography and NMR studies have shown that these sodium silicates contain numerous species of molecular weight from 325-2,000 gm/mole. Monomeric, oligomeric and higher molecular weight linear polymeric arrangements of these structures are found in these solutions.

This presentation will discuss a mine owner's evaluation to utilize a contract miner in the development and production of gold properties. I will address both the quantitative and subjective aspects of the evaluation process. The quantitative aspects include cost evaluation, capital preservation, acquisition and disposal of new and used equipment, administrative costs, recruiting and training, and organizing a staff and craft labor force. The subjective areas of this discussion include corporate philosophy, administrative concerns, contractor competence, loss of owner control, operating flexibility, financing assistance, recruiting and training program utilization and risk reduction. The evaluation of alternatives provides a system for comparing, on a cost basis, an owner/operator system vs. a system using a contract miner. The supplement provides a concept on how a contract miner may be the cost effective system to be utilized.

The Bureau of Mines conducted research on the flotation hydrodynamics of fine particle flotation to improve the flotation efficiency in our domestic minerals industry. The turbulent fluid velocity profile was measured in various flotation cells at different levels of dissipation energy. The importance of dissipation energy and bubble size within the flotation cells for the flotation response of a chalcopyrite ore was evaluated. Both increased turbulent fluid flow and fine size bubbles improved the flotation rate of fine size chalcopyrite particles.

Sulphide mineral flotation is known to be affected by oxidation-reduction conditions in the pulp, although there is some doubt as to whether it is the oxidizing environment or the type of oxidant which influences flotation. Variations in the oxidizing conditions of the pulp and their subsequent effect on flotation were examined for two types of natural sulphide ore, a galenasphalerite ore and a complex pyrite ore. Different gas mixtures ranging from pure nitrogen to pure oxygen were used to control the oxidizing conditions. Zinc recovery increased with a more oxidizing environment, and nitrogen gas acted almost as a depressant for sphalerite in the flotation of the Pb-Zn ore. For the complex pyrite ore, the selectivity between chalcopyrite and both gangue and pyrite improved when the environment was oxidizing, resulting in higher Cu recovery in the copper rougher concentrate. The use of an oxygen rich flotation gas was found to be a suitable method for changing the oxidizing conditions and improving flotation under controlled conditions. The flotation results were correlated to the oxygen content and the redox potential, parameters which describe the pulp chemistry conditions.

Until about three years ago, Asarco's copper business consisted predomi¬nantly of custom smelting of ores and concentrates produced by other mining companies. Since then, the company has been transforming itself into a fully integrated producer in copper mining, smelting, and refining. In doing this, Asarco has lowered its costs and restructured its operations and finances. Now, Asarco hopes to complete this process by spending $260 million over the next three years, to expand and modernize its copper facilities and boost production by some 40%. The capital spending program includes: • $130 million at the Ray mine about 113 km (70 miles) north of Tucson, AZ, to expand mining capacity and install an in-pit ore crusher, mill, and concentrator; • $100 million, to expand the mining capacity at the Mission Complex located south of Tucson, AZ, and refurbish the adjacent, idle Pima mill and concentrator. (Asarco had earlier exercised an option to purchase the Pima mill for about $6 million); and • $30 million, to modernize the copper smelter in El Paso, TX, with a new flash smelting process. The new program is in addition to a recently completed first-phase expansion of the Mission mine, mill, and concentrator. This $13 million debottlenecking of existing operations in¬creased production capacity by 46% or 24.5 kt/a (27,000 stpy), to 79 kt/a (87,000 stpy) of copper in concentrates. In addition, a previously an¬nounced $12 million expansion program at the Ray mine is scheduled for completion in early 1990. It will expand mill capacity, to offset the anticipated effects of increasing ore hardness as the pit deepens. Ray produces 68 kt/a (75,000 stpy) of copper in concen¬trates and an additional 36 kt/a (40,000 stpy) of electrowon copper. By 1992, when Asarco's expanded and modernized copper facilities are operating at capacity, the company's mine output will have increased by 67 kt/a (74,000 stpy), to 263 kt/a (290,000 stpy) of contained copper. That will be enough to provide all of the feed required for Asarco's two copper smelters - by then, both of them modern, state-of-the-art facilities. Asarco's expansion and modernization program will further reduce costs and provide added assurance that the company's copper business will be profitable at the bottom of the cycle, according to Chairman Richard de J. Osborne The Ray mine portion of the new program will include construction at the mine of a new mill and concentrator, with a capacity of 18 kt/d (20,000 stpd) of ore. These new semiautogenous grinding mills and large capacity flotation cells will augment the present 27.2 kt/d (30,000 stpd) concentrator located 29 km (18 miles) away, in Hayden, AZ. A 29 km (18 mile) pipeline will be built to carry tailings in slurry form from the new Ray mill to the present tailings pond. Concentrates from the new facility will be shipped by rail to Asarco's Hayden copper smelter. Ray's present 27.2 kt/d (30,000 stpd) crusher, adjacent to the open-pit, will be replaced by a 54.4 kt/d (60,000 stpd), portable in-pit crusher and conveying system. This will reduce the more expensive ore haulage by truck. The Ray project is scheduled for completion by 1992. It will increase the mine's annual output of copper in concentrates by an additional 33.5 kt/a (37,000 st), to 102 kt (112,000 st). And the project could mean an additional 400 jobs at the 730 employee Ray operation. Work at the Mission Complex involves reactivation of the Pima mill and concentrator and expansion of mine output sufficient to provide ore to both the Pima mill and the present Mission mill. In 1985, Asarco purchased the Pima mine, which occupies one end of the Mission pit. The work at Mission will increase its annual capacity by 33.5 kt (37,000 st), to 112 kt/a (124,000 st) of contained

Introduction Coal mining in Alaska's interior, specifically in the Healy area, began as early as 1918 with the construction of the Alaska Railroad. Mining was originally limited to underground operations but has expanded to entirely surface operations. In 1943, the Usibelli Coal Mine was formed and started developing Alaska's first surface mine east of Suntrana (Usibelli Coal Miner, 1984). Production from the local coal deposits has steadily increased and, in 1978, surface mining of Poker Flats was initiated (Fig. 1). Currently, a 25-m3 (33-cu yd) walking dragline strips two coal seams, using an extended bench on the second pass. In addition, a fleet of trucks and shovels are used for coal removal and some limited overburden stripping. In 1984, a contract was signed between Usibelli Coal Mine and Sun Eel Shipping Co. in 1984. Since then, production has nearly doubled to more than 1.3 Mt/a (1.5 million stpy). This article will discuss geotechnical constraints on mining within the steeply dipping coal deposits that exist within the Poker Flats mining area. Specifically, the article will describe how the mining operation retriggered an historic landslide on the No. 5 coal seam (Fig. 2). And the article tells how a mine plan was developed that allowed the coal to be safely removed without inducing additional movement. Regional geology The coal-bearing group in the Nenana coal field is of Tertiary Age. It is overlain in some areas by several thousand feet of Tertiary gravels - the Nenana Gravels. In areas mined by surface methods, the Nenana Gravels have been eroded off, and up to 30 m (100 ft) of quaternary outwash gravels overlay the coal-bearing formations. The coal-bearing group is divided into five formations: Healy Creek, Sanctuary, Suntrana, Lignite, and Grubstake (Wahrhaftig, 1969). Lignite Creek lies on the north limb of a west plunging anticline. This has brought the Suntrana coal-hearing formations near enough to the surface to allow surface mining. Mining is presently in progress on the south side of Lignite Creek in the Poker Flats area. The coal-bearing formation is cut off to the south by a fault having perhaps several thousand feet of vertical displacement, with the upthrust side to the north. South of this fault, Nenana Gravels are exposed on the surface. The Suntrana Formation contain the minable reserves at Poker Flats. This formation is a repeated sequence of poorly consolidated pebbly sandstone near the bottom, grading through a silty fine sandstone to a footwall clay unit immediately below a coal seam cap. The footwall clays are high plasticity clays to silty clays. It has been reported that they contain 30% to 50% montmorillonite (Usibelli Coal Mine Inc., 1982). There are six coal seams in the Suntrana Formation, No. I (the lower seam) through No. 6. Only the top four seams are currently exposed. No. 3, No. 4, and No. 6 seams are the only mined seams. The No. 5 seam is very thin or not present. Portions of the undisturbed Suntrana Formation are overlain by up to 15 m (50 ft) of Quaternary outwash gravels or recent landslide rubble. The surface is overlain by a very thin layer of muskeg and isolated areas of permafrost. In many areas, the outwash gravels are found immediately below the surface muskeg. Numerous landslides have been documented along the north facing slopes of Lignite Creek (US Geological Survey, 1970, and Wahrhaftig, 1958). These appear to be surficial solifluction or skin flow types of landslides. In addition, deep-seated structurally controlled slides are also evident on both the north and south sides of Lignite Creek. Structural features Premining aerial photographs (Fig. 3) of the Lignite Creek slopes in the Poker Flats area indicate substantial evidence of deep-seated landsliding. The landslides noted in Fig. 3 are both inside and outside of the current mining area. Surface mapping and geologic exploration indicate that the coal seams are dipping out of the slopes within the noted slide areas. It is suspected that, historically, these landslides were triggered by undercutting of the toe of the slopes by Lignite Creek. And sliding it thought to have taken place on one or more of the clay beds underlying the coal seams (Golder, 1985). The slide areas are characterized by semicircular head scarps and slumped topography. Based on the premining photographs, these slides do not appear to have been recently active. Surfactants and polymers are used in a number of processes such as flotation and flocculation. The structure of the adsorbed surfactant and polymer layers control the interfacial properties of the solid and hence an understanding of the structure of the adsorbed layers at the molecular level is essential. In this paper, a review of different spectroscopic techniques (fluorescence, electron spin resonance and Raman) used to characterize the adsorbed layers [in-situ] is presented. Information on the micropolarity, microfluidity and size of the surfactant aggregates was obtained and the growth of the adsorbed layer was followed. [In-situ] conformational states of polymers at the solid/liquid interface were determined for different pH values.

By the middle of 1989 Inco will have applied its patented cyanide removal technology to seventeen commercial operations. Removal of cyanide from CIL slurry tailings is applied at Equity Silver and Inco's new 1.200 mtpd mill at Inco/Golden Knight. Detoxification of CIP tailings is carried out by Colosseum California (3.600 mtpd), Canamax's Ketza River (360 mtpd) and Westmin's Silbak Premier (2000 tpd) operations. Repulped tailings from Merrill-Crowe flowsheets are treated at Total Erikson's Mount Skukum (300 mtpd) and Skyline's Johnny Mountain (200 mtpd) mills and barren bleed at Inco/Queenston's McBean mill (500 mtpd). Lynngold's MacLellan mill (1800 mtpd) and ERG (40.000 mtpd) treat pond supernatant water. Plating shop cyanide effluents are decyanized at Kuntz Electroplating and two other plating shops in Ontario. Details regarding some of the above operations are given. Operating and capital cost estimates for various treatment options are discussed.

Consider a typical blast at a surface gold mine in North America. For example, the low-grade area of Bench 4000 at AMAX Gold's Sleeper Mine (Winnemucca, Nevada). Bench 4000 is 20 feet high (=6m) , and blast holes are drilled and sampled on a 14 foot by 14 foot square grid (a4m x 4m). A representative blast includes between 50 and 150 holes, encompassing 15,000 to 45,000 tons of material (w14,000 to 41,000 metric tons).

In order to investigate production decline in Tarkwa Goldfields Ltd., located in a tropical rain forest, amongst other areas, a health survey was conducted with the aim to see 1. The health status of the workers. 2. Which parameters carry the most information about the health situation and which of them can be applied easily during screening programmes. 3. What steps could be taken to improve the situation. In all 249 workers were investigated. A non-invasive method involving taking of body weight and arterial blood pressure was used. All subjects were required to answer a questionaire. Emphasis was placed on the history of malaria and diarrhoea within the last six months. Both management and workers co-operated fully. Another set of 110 workers from a neighbouring tyre factory were also investigated for control. Among the underground workers, the percentage body weight loss during a shift increased with decreasing body weight. Dehydration levels could be as much as 4 to 5% of body weight. This could be attributed to the fact that workers took insufficient or no water during the shift. The health status of the mine workers was generally poor and in our opinion malnutrition combined with malaria severely threatens the health and well-being of the workers. Hypertension is also a problem. An improvement in production is intimately linked with the well-being of the workers.

Coal flotation applications utilizing column flotation have been shown to improve grade and recovery when compared with traditional mechanical cell flotation. Deister Flotaire Column Flotation Machines have been installed in pilot and commercial coal cleaning applications. Comparative data covering prior and current flotation is presented. In addition, special characteristics covering the Deister air generation system are presented.

This paper discusses the results of an experimental investigation to study the release of methane in coalbeds. Absolute porosity of coal samples was first determined experimentally. Following the porosity measurement, adsorption/ desorption tests were carried out to determine the gas content of coal and the rate at which it is released. Finally, micrographs were obtained using electron microscopy and the use of a physical model, developed to explain the gas flow behavior of coal, was justified. The results of this study indicated that the measured absolute porosity of the coal sample was between 5 an 6%. This was significantly lower than the porosity estimated by comparing the micrograph area occupied by the pores and the area of observation for several micrographs, suggesting that coal has a large number of pores with a very small volume. The micrographs also clearly indicated that coal has a large interconnected network of cleats and microfractures. The adsorption/desorption experiments showed a hysteresis between the adsorption and desorption isotherms. Also, the rate of desorption was found to be strongly dependent on the particle size of the specimen.

Three composites, assaying about 3 g/t Au and 0.75% Cu, were investigated. Each contained oxide copper minerals, iron oxides, and silicates. One composite also contained copper and iron sulphides. Maximum gold extractions by thiourea leaching were obtained after copper removal by acid pre¬leaching at pH 1.5 and redox potentials of 400 mV (Pt versus SCE). Best thiourea leaching conditions were pH 1.5, redox potentials over 200 mV, and 0.4% thiourea. This gave 90% gold extraction in 2 h with thiourea consumptions of 25 kg/t. Lower potentials gave poorer extractions. Ferrous iron additions before leaching halved thiourea consumptions. Longer leach times and the presence of sulphide minerals sometimes resulted in reprecipitation of gold.

During the past decade, researchers at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University have worked to develop a novel flotation process for treating very fine particles. This process, which is now commonly known as [microbubble column flotation] (MCF), has been shown to be very effective in a number of applications related to fine coal processing. These applications include the retrofit of existing preparation plant circuits and the recovery of additional coal fines from refuse streams. In addition, work conducted under the sponsorship of the United States Department of Energy indicates that the MCF process is capable of producing superclean and ultraclean coals from many eastern U.S. coals. This paper describes some of the basic problems associated with fine particle flotation and the design and operational features of the MCF process used to minimize these problems. Also presented are the results of ongoing pilot- and field-testing programs.

The various sub-processes which, together, make up the unit operation of froth flotation all depend on the characteristics of the feed solids, the solution phase, the air bubbles and the mechanical/hydrodynamic action of the machine. Characterization is obviously necessary for evaluation and process control, but the relationships between characteristics and process response are often unclear. A model-based characterization scheme is proposed in which material and system characteristics are evaluated in the context of simplified models for the individual subprocesses. The general basis for such an approach is discussed using the process of particle attachment and the influence of mineral liberation as examples.

A comprehensive approach to the development and organization of an expert system that is designed to assist electricians in diagnosing electrical faults m mining machinery is discussed. The system includes diagnostic, reference, and tutorial programs. The diagnostic portion of the system is based on a causal-reasoning approach which is used to establish a hierarchy of symptoms and the subsequent production rules for identifying component-level failures m the motor-control circuit of a shuttle car. With this approach, conclusions are developed directly from knowledge of the circuit and its behavior (in both working and failure modes) based on first principles, rather than the heuristics of a domain expert. The symptoms and their hierarchical structure an: formulated by creating "what-if" scenarios and performing a qualitative circuit analysis for each fault Techniques for incorporating interactive graphical displays of the circuit schematic into the diagnostic portion of the system are also presented. Supportive computer programs that provide' reference material and tutorials on the circuit are also described.

Solution mining operations often encounter difficulty maintaining adequate leach solution flow into the ore formation because of loss of formation permeability near the injection well. Permeability loss caused by swelling and breakup of clays and fine particle migration can often be the cause of the problem.

Eminent Domain is the power of the government or municipality to take property for public use without the consent or acceptance of the owner. Typically the agency taking the property will make an offer on the property, hoping that the owner will immediately accept and allow work to begin. If a mutual resolution regarding the property value cannot be reached, however, the municipality will condemn the premises and institute a condemnation action in a court of law, which is when the problems begin. The power of the government to take the subject property is limited by the Federal and State constitutional duty to pay "just compensation" for the property.
