Many coal seams are associated with soft floor strata and during mine development if coal pillars are not properly designed, floor heave occurs and causes interruption of coal production. In the severe cases, the section or mine is abandoned. One of the methods for controlling floor heave is floor bolting. This paper describes the demonstration of floor bolting methods in a West Virginia coal mine. Three methods were used: (1) vertical full resin bolting, (2) floor truss bolting, and (3) floor truss bolting plus a floor cut at the center of the entry. The design of each method and the experimental results are discussed in detail.

In the past 30 years, there have been tremendous advancements in the uses and applications of column flotation. From their first use as final cleaners that could produce excellent grades at the cost of recoveries, columns are now being used in every stage of the flotation circuit as well as is SX-EW. Columns as roughers, final scavengers and even at the end of CIL circuits, are finding their way into the marketplace. Operational results of these new uses are presented. INTRODUCTION Flotation columns have been in use since the early 1950's in the U.S. (Hollingsworth, 1952) and the early 1960's in Canada (Trembley, Boutin, Wheeler, 1963). Application of column flotation has been somewhat diverse. In the early years, columns were used predominately for molybdenum cleaning in Canada and for phosphate flotation in the United States. Unfortunately, results met with skepticism and disdain as the columns were hard to operate, temperamental and although producing high grades, could not achieve acceptable recoveries. Since the inception of column flotation technology, the degree of knowledge for design and operation of columns has vastly improved. Despite improvements in the technology, there is still some reluctance by mineral producers to investigate the use of column flotation cells for processing stages other than cleaner flotation. This characterization is in part due to the proven advantage of flotation columns in reducing gangue entrainment in the froth product which results in higher grade products and/or fewer processing stages. Also, during the development of column technology, different types of spargers have been used with varying degrees of success. Furthermore, the general knowledge base of parameters affecting column flotation design and operation have advanced tremendously. Inefficient, or primitive, sparger design, coupled with the lack of column design and operating knowledge and experience, resulted in poor metallurgical and mechanical performance in many cases. Unfortunately, this lack of knowledge caused many column installations to be characterized as failures. The industry felt that columns could not achieve high recoveries, especially when dealing with coarse particles. Therefore, columns were characterized as cleaners, where low recoveries could be tolerated as recirculating loads rather than direct losses and froth cleaning advantages of the quiescent column flotation regime could be realized. Fortunately for the minerals industry, some producers have stood at the forefront of technology and allowed the column to be utilized for new applications. In the last decade, column flotation applications have expanded to virtually every mineral system and plant location throughout the world. The expanded application of columns has generated a new wave of interest for processing various streams. One of the most notable is in the use of columns as rougher cells. This is of particular interest to "green-field" plants and plants where expansions are taking place. Here, metallurgical superiority can be combined with maximum capital and operating cost advantages for a rapid return on investment. The superior results experienced to date, have generated a cohesive vision of the future in mineral processing where flotation columns function as single stage primary separation devices (roughers) with a single stage cleaner, if necessary. The advantages of column flotation go far beyond their original uses. We now have seen columns used as final tail scavengers, in SX-EW plants and even at the end of CIL circuits. Some of these cases will be reviewed. CASE STUDIES In an attempt to show the diversification of column flotation to many facets of the mineral processing plant, a variety of case studies will be discussed. Some of these were designed by the authors while others have been provided by plant sources. It is important to note that in each successful case, the columns were designed using the author's design and scale-up approach. The U.S. Bureau of Mines investigated column bioleaching as a means of recovering manganese from a domestic low-grade oxide ore. Manganese was solubilized from the ore using indigenous heterotrophic microorganisms and molasses as the nutrient source. The effects of medium flow rate, molasses concentration, and frequency of medium replacement on the rate of manganese extraction were examined. Results showed that flow rates between 0.4 and 8.1 L/min/m2 had little impact on manganese extraction, while an increase in the total amount of molasses applied during leaching directly affected the extent and rate of manganese extraction. Manganese extractions of more than 90% were achieved in 12 weeks of bioleaching in column tests using 500 g charges of ore. Sugar utilization by the microorganisms and formation of organic acid metabolites were monitored by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Two methods were evaluated to recover manganese from the sugar- depleted bioleaching medium: (1) adsorption onto weak cation exchange resin, followed by stripping and precipitation techniques; and (2) direct precipitation of the manganese as MnCO, using ammonium carbonate. Both recovery methods removed at least 95% of the solubilized manganese from the medium as a carbonate salt. The stripped molasses medium was replenished with fresh molasses and recycled back through the bioleach column, successfully leaching more manganese.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted a study to evaluate the effect of ventilation on the performance of automatic sprinkler systems in extinguishing wood crib fires. Experiments were conducted at airflows of 0, 0.76, 1.5, 2.5, and 4.1 m/s. Two experiments were conducted at each airflow, using 74° C fast response pendent sprinklers in one experiment and 74° C fast response horizontal sidewall sprinklers in the other experiment. In the experiments at airflows of 0 and 0.76 m/s, sprinklers were located directly above the fire and 2.4 m upstream and downstream of the fire. The sprinkler directly above the fire was the only sprinkler to operate with no discernible difference in the suppression capability of the pendent and horizontal sidewall sprinklers. In the experiments at airflows of 1.5 and 2.5 m/s, sprinklers were located directly above the fire and 2.4 and 4.8 m downstream of the fire. The sprinkler located 2.4 m downstream was the only sprinkler to operate with the horizontal sidewall sprinkler being more effective in extinguishing the wood crib fire. The average response times of the sprinklers at airflows of 0.76, 1.5, and 2.5 m/s were 3-1/2 times the average response time of the sprinklers at 0 m/s. The results of this study will help enhance the safety of the nation's miners.

The Orchard Valley Mine, a large underground coal mine located in western Colorado, experienced a major mine fire during an idled Sunday on June 1, 1986. This mine had extensive problems with spontaneous combustion near the coal outcrop. Spontaneous combustion has been determined to be the probable cause of that fire. Preparing for a mine emergency was an on-going task. Once the emergency occurred, much of the preparation work was implemented and aided in controlling the situation. Later, the successes and shortfalls that arose from that emergency were analyzed for future course of action. This paper summarizes the activity that led up to the major fire, the handling of that emergency, the lessons learned, and the changes implemented.

Within the industrial marketplace barium sulfate has an established role as a filler or extender pigment for use in a wide array of applications. The focus of this paper is to outline a number of these applications and in each one characterizes those features of barium sulfate which provide value. Following this is a discussion of the process techniques which have been used to develop value from a selected class of barite ores found in southern Missouri. It is appropriate to define some terms which may help in clarifying some concepts as presented. Use of the term barium sulfate refers broadly to the chemical compound BaSO4 Barite will generally refer to the naturally occurring barium sulfate ores and their properties. Barytes, whether bleached or not, will refer to barite ore made suitable for industrial applications.

Many of the deeper ore reserves in current gold operations as well as new gold deposits consist of refractory ore types. As process development for these mineralizations remains time-consuming and costly, minimization of exploratory testwork and the early identification of feasible process routes is critical. Since most of the processing parameters are related to the mineralogy of the ore (Marsden & House, 1992), thorough mineralogical analyses during exploration and development phases have become a technical and economical requirement. The determination of mineralogy-related processing parameters and especially the gold mineralogy is even more important for these ore types because refractory gold ores consist of many transitions from partially leachable to totally refractory. In addition to sulfide and gangue encapsulation, various other refractory conditions may exist. Together with accessory mineralogical detriments (e.g., alteration/ slimes, reagent consumers, scale formation, mineral preg robbing) they may complicate process selection and hamper optimal plant operation.

CANMET/MRL has been contributing to an industry/government program to assess the quality of air in mines, and improve the working environment for Canadian miners. The ultimate aim of this program is to recommend a sampling methodology and appropriate concentration limits for both the soot (diesel particulate matter - DPM) generated by diesel equipment, and respirable combustible dust (RCD) as measured underground. The program was conceived by the Canadian Adhoc Diesel Committee, which consists of representatives from seven major Canadian mining companies, three provincial inspectorates, one union representative, two manufacturers of diesel equipment, and CANMET, a Federal Canadian research agency. This paper describes the modification and laboratory confirmation of an existing methodology for the sampling and analysis of DPM/RCD, including: sampling problems, filter selection, filter efficiency, DPM size distribution, the approximate performance of fractionating devices, and it reports the results of current ambient measurements of exposure levels in Canadian underground mines. Because of the concern about the health impact of DPM/RCD on mine workers, North American agencies are in the process of establishing limits for these aerosols. So far, the Province of British Columbia is the only jurisdiction in North America to legislate the maximum exposure level of RCD in its underground mines, i.e. 1.5 mg/m3 interim level recommended by the Adhoc Diesel Committee. It has also recommended the use of the CANMET/ADHOC RCD sampling protocol.

The kinetics of the leaching of antimony oxide ore (Sb2O4) in aqueous hydrochloric acid solutions has been investigated. This dissolution reaction is a heterogeneous solid-liquid reaction. It has been found that the leaching temperature and the concentration of hydrochloric acid turn out to be the significant influencing factors on the leaching rate. The apparent activation energy for the leaching reaction was determined to be 63.5 W/mol within the experimental temperature region of 50O to 90O C. The experimental results indicate that the leaching process is controlled by the rate of the chemical reaction.

In the time period from the early 1980's to the present, longwall roof support technology has evolved tremendously. Chock supports and caliper shields were replaced by 2-leg or 4-leg lemniscate shields. The lemniscate linkage for which the support is named offers numerous advantages to the sup-port both as a fabricated structure and to its performance in the mining application. The hydraulic system, which is the dynamic element of the roof support, was essentially unchanged in early lemniscate shields with the exception of the complexity of additional hydraulic circuits to power a canopy tilt cylinder and canopy side-seals. The control of these fluid-powered functions was provided by direct manual control of valves energizing individual functions onboard the roof-support or the adjacent roof-support. This control valve-gear was comprised of multiple individual valves arranged in a "bank" or integrated into a single hydraulic distribution block with a single operating handle to select any independent function.

At some surface and underground mines, control of ground-water inflow involves significant costs. These costs include the capital costs for installing a dewatering system, power and other costs to operate and maintain the system, and costs to treat and dispose of the water that is collected. To minimize these costs, design of a dewatering system utilizing wells has been formulated in terms of a nonlinear operations research problem using quadratic programming. Using this formulation, the locations, depths, pumping rates, and pumping schedules of wells are selected so as to minimize the total costs of the dewatering system.

Tests at the VP-5 "C" shaft fan installation of Island Creek Coal's Virginia Pocahontas Mines were performed to determine pressure drop due to the design of the shaft collar and ductwork leading to the fan. Data from the test locations in the shaft, duct and fan indicate significant pressure losses in the system as well as significant turbulence in the flow. Data taken with a 3-D probe in the fan annulus confirmed the importance of using this type of instrument in turbulent flow applications. This data will be later supplemented with data taken after addition of turning vanes in the 45° turn adjacent to the fan inlet.

The recent development of rare earth permanent magnets has revolutionized the field of magnetic separation. The advent of rare earth permanent magnets in the 1980's provided a magnetic energy product an order of magnitude greater than that of conventional ferrite magnets. This has allowed the design of high-intensity magnetic circuits operating energy free and surpassing the strength and effectiveness of electromagnets. New applications and design concepts focused on the mineral and metal processing industries have evolved. This technology also led to the development of various magnetic separators specifically designed for mineral processing applications. Applications which were not previously considered are now being applied to primary mineral upgrading and recycling and secondary recovery.

Conventional iron ore balling circuits exhibit undesirable surging behavior which is known to result from uncontrolled occurrence of the mechanisms of nucleation, coalescence and layering. This study was undertaken to investigate the mechanism of pellet growth by layering. Several laboratory experiments have been carried out to delineate the effect of feed moisture content and feed quantity. This paper presents an analysis of the experimental results and a simple model to describe the layering process.

Unlike previous gold mining booms in Nevada's Great Basin, the current boom includes a serious commitment to mine reclamation. Many of the smaller mines began reclaiming in the late 1980s but met with limited success due in part to poor soil characteristics. Public land managers and the mining industry began looking for ways to improve reclamation success. One promising technique is suggested by an ongoing research project using sludge biosolids, the solid residue of municipal waste water treatment. During the 1980s, limited space in landfills led municipal governments to search for alternate ways to dispose of their biosolids. The cities of Reno and Sparks, NR and the US Bureau of Land Management (BLM) searched for ways to combine these needs to everyone's mutual benefit. Yet barriers remained. The federal government had major concerns about potential bioaccumulation of metals and contamination of drinking water from the land application of municipal biosolids. The barriers were lifted late in 1991 when an interagency task force led by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) issued a new federal policy on the use of biosolids on federal land. The policy encouraged biosolids as a soil amendment to reclaim degraded minelands and invited federal agencies to develop biosolid pilot projects. In response, BLM enlisted the help of American Resources Corp. (ARC) and the University of Nevada, Las Vegas for a pilot study at ARC'S' Butcher Boy Mine near Wadsworth, NR. Although biosolids have been used in mine land reclamation in the eastern United States for 20 years, before this pilot study, none had been used on public lands in the arid Great Basin. Land application of biosolids improves soil conditions by improving nutrient uptake, increasing water retention, permitting easier root penetration and enhancing soil fertility. Biosolids increase ecosystem productivity and can lead to significant improvements in the structure and diversity of plant and animal communities. Thus, land application of biosolids promotes biodiversity.

In October, 1990, a fire started in a large underground coal mine in Western Pennsylvania. During fire-fighting activities, an explosion occurred and all personnel were evacuated. Safe re-entry into the mine was not possible and the mine was sealed. Recovery efforts began in January, 1991 and continued until March, 1991, when permanent underground seals were installed between the fire area and the mine openings. This paper describes an extensive atmospheric monitoring program conducted by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), Pittsburgh Safety and Health Technology Center (PS&HTC) including the analysis of mine fire gases, natural ventilation, fan pressure and air quantity distribution.

The globalization of mineral markets and intense competition in downstream mineral-consuming industries such as transportation, agriculture, and construction are requiring raw materials suppliers to innovate, improve quality, invest in new technology, and control costs. Mineral specifications are becoming more refined, and pressure to improve products is felt from increasing numbers of competing producers, substitute materials, customers, and regulators. As a result, engineered mineral products are becoming more like manufactured ones in terms of cost structure, differentiation, and the importance of market driven, customer specific product development. Engineered mineral products are defined as those where the costs of refining and upgrading outweigh those of conventional mining activities (blasting, crushing, classification, haulage etc.), and where close control of physical and chemical parameters is required for customers' processing and manufacturing applications. This includes industrial minerals such as calcium carbonate, kaolin, mica, specialty oxides, talc, and some metal powders. It excludes most metals and bulk commodity materials such as gypsum, lime, sulfur, and soda ash. Engineered mineral products are utilized in common household goods, and are at the forefront of industrial materials engineering in plastics, ceramics, composites, glazes, coatings, and construction materials. As a group, they introduce interesting questions to the minerals firm. Advanced materials or basic? Diversify or specialize? What are the implications of advanced materials and for mineral markets, and most importantly, where can the producer look for long-term value, volume, and profits?

A sulfidic flotation tailings ore, containing 1.14 gpt Au and 242.53 gpt Ag, was treated by low temperature chlorination roasting followed by cyanide or chloride leaching. Eighty per cent of Ag was recovered by cyanide leach when the ore was roasted at 350°C with 50 kg/ton calcium chloride. About seventy per cent of Au was made cyanide amenable by chlorination roasting at 400°C. A better Ag recovery, ninety per cent or over, was achieved by chloride (NaCl+HCl) leach. However, Au recovery was very poor by chloride leach. Ferric chloride, calcium chloride, and cupric chloride were compared as chlorinating agents for their effect on Au and Ag recovery. The study found that low temperature chlorination roasting is very effective for recovering Ag associated with stibnite and stannite. The best chlorinating agent for the test ore was found to be calcium chloride. Parallel roasting-leaching tests indicated that chlorination roasting was far superior over oxidation roasting for both gold and silver recovery.

Miners working in underground mines where diesel equipment is used are exposed to exhaust pollutants. These include carbon monoxide (CO), carbon dioxide (CO,), nitric oxide (NO), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), sulfur dioxide (SO2), hundreds of different hydrocarbons (HC) and particulate matter. Evidence from animal inhalation studies and limited epidemiological investigations have led the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) to recommend that ‘... whole diesel exhaust be regarded as a potential occupational carcinogen ...’ NIOSH further stated that ‘... the excess cancer risk for workers exposed to diesel exhaust has not yet been quantified, but the probability of developing cancer should be decreased by minimizing exposure…’ The International Agency for Research on Cancer(IARC) reached a similar conclusion, saying that ‘... diesel engine exhaust is probably carcinogenic to humans.’ Before these declarations, there was insufficient evidence concerning the carcinogenicity of diesel exhaust. It was well known, though, that diesel exhaust caused less severe problems, such as headache, eye irritation and unpleasant odors. In 1988, a milestone was reached in the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) regulatory process. An advisory committee recommended a three-tier approach to regulating diesels used underground-approval of diesel equipment, safety and health. Diesel particulate matter may be specifically regulated. In addition, ambient air quality standards are being proposed that will establish a new standard for CO2 and lower the permissible exposure limits for the NO2, CO, SO2 and formaldehyde emissions that originate from diesels and other sources. Additional safety and emission restrictions are also proposed for diesel engines in coal mines. The goal of the US Bureau of Mines (USBM) diesel engine research program is to minimize the health and safety problems associated with underground diesel equipment use. Part of this program is focused on reducing exhaust emissions from diesel-powered equipment used in underground mines.
