Kennecott Utah Copper began a modernization program in 1986 that was aimed at expanding and updating mining and ore process facilities at the company’s Bingham Canyon copper mine and concentrator near Salt Lake City, UT. Major components of the project included installation of an in-pit crusher, a transfer conveying system and a new ore concentrator with a design capacity of 70 kt/d (77,000 stpd). The Copperton concentrator was commissioned in February 1988. The grinding circuit is one of its principal features. It consists of three identical lines, each with a 10.4-m- (34-ft-) diam x 4.6-m- (15-ft-) long semiautogenous grinding (SAG) mill and two 5.5-m- (18-ft-) diam x 8.6- (28-ft-) long ball mills. The SAG mills are driven by two 4.5-MW (each) (6000-hp) variable- speed dc motors through a clutch-pinion gear-ring gear assembly. The ball mills are driven by 4.1-MW (5500-hp) synchronous motors coupled through a typical clutch-pinion gear-ring gear system.

Caltrans is studying alignments for a 160-kilometer-long high speed ground transportation system from Los Angeles to Bakersfield across the Tehachapi Mountains. This link is needed to connect southern California with San Francisco by a short passenger rail service. None presently exists. The system will require tunnels and viaducts along the route with sections crossing two major active fault zones. High speed ground transportation technologies are being evaluated for achieving rail speeds of between 200 and 480 kilometers per hour. This paper presents the technical requirements for tunnels along the alternative routes being considered for the project.

This article examines health and safety trends during the past 10 years at Appalachian surface and underground bituminous coal mines. Data for Appalachia include Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Virginia and eastern Kentucky. These states account for more than 90% of the coal production in the Appalachian region. (Production, accidents and fatalities in Ohio, Maryland, Tennessee and Alabama are not included in computing Appalachian trends.) Trends for Appalachian underground mines are differentiated by size and mining method into three categories: - Small mines with fewer than 50 employees. - Large nonlongwall mines with 50 or more employees. - Longwall mines (mines with at least one longwall production face).

The need for improved safety and productivity brought about the introduction of longwall mining to the Appalachian coal fields. These same forces continue to drive developments in modern longwall equipment and mining practices. Current initiatives to improve productivity and safety are focused on automation and the effects of scale in equipment design. Longwall roof-supports, shearers and face-conveyors have changed significantly. Panel layouts have evolved to include larger total tonnages and provide for more rapid development of gate-entries. These advancements have improved longwall productivity and new production records are continually being set. Roof supports Reliability is implicit in the quest for automation. It is impossible to automate equipment if it is not reliable. To a large degree, this has been the problem with longwall shield automation efforts. The "electronic control" of shields depends on the proper functioning of electronic equipment, electrohydraulic valves and full-flow service valves onboard every support.

Oxidized sulfide minerals, commonly formed by weathering, are becoming increasingly important resources as primary sulfide deposits are depleted. Oxidation, in general, reduces selectivity and recovery in flotation. The objective of this research was to determine the mechanisms of oxidation and collector adsorption in sulfide systems as a step towards developing improved technologies for beneficiation of oxidized sulfides. Data from microcell flotation tests are combined with electrochemical and spectrophotometric measurements. The adsorption of ethyl xanthate (EX) on oxidized sulfides was characterized using AC impedance and voltammetry techniques, and correlated to flotation response. Oxidation resulted in an electrically resistive, nonporous surface layer. The floatability of chalcocite, chalcopyrite and pyrite was dependent on the extent of oxidation. Oxidation for one day or more at 65ºC suppressed chalcocite flotation. Oxidized chalcocite also inhibited flotation of chalcopyrite and pyrite. Oxidation caused decreased chalcopyrite flotation. Pyrite flotation, however, increased after oxidation.

The plate-glass windows in the bus were cracked and mud-coated. Nevertheless, they afforded an excellent view of the many head-on collisions we narrowly avoided along the route from the Magadan airport to town. Apparently the driver thought the left side of the road was smoother than the right side, for he drove in the wrong lane at all possible times, even in the face of oncoming traffic. As far as we could tell, neither side of the road was any better than the other. Either way, we had to hang on just to stay in our seats. We careened past trucks and pedestrians, nearly always in the face of impending disaster. When the bus finally pulled into the parking lot of the Okean Hotel in Magadan, we had to thank the driver, not only for safely delivering his passengers, but also for the lasting first impression he gave us of the Russian Far East.

To reduce their sulfur emissions, many coal-fired electric power plants use wet flue-gas scrubbers. These scrubbers convert sulfur oxides into solid sulfate and sulfite sludge, which must then be disposed of. This sludge is a result of reacting limestone with sulfur dioxide to precipitate calcium sulfite and calcium sulfate. The majority of the sludge is simply landfilled, but with increasing landfillimg costs this can cost the plant millions of dollars per year. As a result, this option is rapidly becoming less attractive. Producing marketable materials from the sludge is a far more promising avenue, provided that the products can meet the necessary specifications at a reasonable cost. In this paper, a method is described for using froth flotation and water-only cyclones to remove unreacted limestone from scrubber sludge. The water-only cyclone was found to be very effective for removing the coarser unreacted limestone, grinding ball chips, gravel, and similar coarse impurities. Froth flotation was found to remove fine unreacted limestone, with a minimum of reagent addition.

A new super-large 100 m3 (3500 ft3) pneumatic mechanical flotation cell is now available to meet today's mineral processing challenges. Several innovative design concepts represent a marked departure from conventional flotation cell designs. The radial discharge from the pump action rotor and the overhung vane type stator is contained in a conical bottom round tank with no dead comers. Peripheral launders collect froth overflowing the entire circumference of the tank and these launders are of a hexagonal design permitting cells to be nested together in a honeycomb fashion. The mechanism drive is either a customized right angle gear reducer or a conventional Vee belt drive. Both drive systems are available with an optional variable frequency control system that permits infinite speed adjustment of the rotor in each flotation cell or group of cells. Results of side-by-side comparative testing between three major manufacturers of super-large pneumatic mechanical flotation cells are discussed. These results were obtained at a large copper concentrator in Chile during several weeks of commercial scale testing.

There are two steps in evaluating potential mine waste impacts on ground and surface waters. Characterize the mine waste (characterization methodologies) and assess potential impacts (assessment strategies). One or both may be required for mine permitting, operation and closure. The first step is to characterize the waste. Determine if it has the potential to release chemical constituents or acid rock drainage to the environment. If no potential exists for release to the environment, the evaluation process is complete. A monitoring plan is then established. If the potential exists for release of chemical constituents or acid rock drainage to the environment, a strategy to evaluate potential impacts must be implemented. Strategies discussed here to evaluate potential impacts were developed during investigations at precious metal and base metal mines in Nevada. Water resources in Nevada consist mostly of ground water. So the strategies discussed focus on potential impacts to ground water. However, several of these strategies also apply to assessing potential impacts to surface water. Implementing these strategies has helped determine the potential for impact and has been successful in permitting mine expansion as well as allowing continued operation and obtaining mine closure at several mine sites in Nevada. These strategies were carried out in accordance with Nevada Division of Environmental Protection (NDEP) regulations and through the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA)

The increased use of continuous miners to extract thicker coal seams has necessitated the use of enhanced ventilation systems in the headings. Due to the increased face size, more ventilation is required to effectively dilute the liberated methane down to acceptable levels. If more air is directed to the face an increase in the entrainment of dust creates an increased potential for workers to be exposed to dust. To enable the ventilation systems to reduce the methane levels and the levels of the airborne dust the ventilation systems in the heading have to be carefully designed. The matter is made more complicated through the use of other ventilation methods like jet fans, air-moving sprayfans on the continuous miners and high capacity scrubbers on the continuous miners. To enable the design of a balanced ventilation system in seam heights of over five metres requires methods that consider the system in a three- dimensional manner rather than in a two-dimensional fashion. Through the use of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) coupled with appropriate methods of taking underground face ventilation readings these problems can be solved in a cost effective way. Using computer modelling, ventilation methods can be designed and assessed instead of using costly underground trials to test the alternatives. Use of this system has led to a higher level of ventilation design as well as a more effective method to combat the health and safety hazards in coal mine headings.

This paper introduces a novel classification approach named the flotation classification approach which works by controlling interactions between particles. It differs considerably from the conventional classification processes operating on mechanical forces. In the present test, the micro-bubble flotation technology is grafted onto hydro-classification. Selective aggregation and dispersion of ultrafine particles are achieved through governing the interactions in the classification process. A series of laboratory classification tests for -44 pm kaolin have been conducted on a classification column. As a result, about 92 percent recovery for minus 2 pm size fraction Kaolin in the final product is obtained. In addition, two criteria for the classification are set up. Finally, a principle of classifying and controlling the interactions between particles is discussed in terms of surface thermodynamics and hydrodynamics.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has completed a laboratory evaluation of exhaust emissions from a diesel engine using an oxygenated diesel fuel. The fuels tested were soy methyl esters in a neat (100%) form and low sulfur, petroleum number 2 diesel fuel (D2). The engine tested was a Caterpillar 3304, indirect injection, naturally aspirated, 75 kW, diesel engine that is typical of engines used in underground mining applications. The objective was to determine the extent to which oxygenated fuels, such as methyl esters, reduce diesel particulate matter (DPM), and their influence on upon gaseous emissions such as total hydrocarbons, CO, NOx, NO2, formaldehyde, and other exhaust emissions. Heavy- and light-duty transient tests were used to simulate load cycles typical of mine applications. The soy methyl ester fuel produced greater amounts of volatile DPM (organic material) but much less nonvolatile DPM (carbon soot) for overall DPM reductions. A diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC) typical of the type commonly used in metal and nonmetal mines was tested with both fuels. The DOC further reduced the volatile and total DPM when used with the soy methyl esters, but increased the total DPM for D2 due to sulfate formation. The soy methyl ester fuel reduced CO and hydrocarbon, and NOx emissions. The DOC further reduced CO and hydrocarbon emissions.

With the advent of faster micro-processors, the use of numerical methods to simulate complex fluid dynamic phenomena in three dimensions for use in design has become prevalent in the automotive, and turbo-machinery industries. The Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) method divides the region of interest into small control volumes which form the mesh representing the physical characteristics of the problem, and uses the finite volume method to intergrate the equations for the conservation of mass, momentum, energy and species over each control volume. Recent developments in CFD software expedite mesh generation, and enable the use of unstructured grids, comprised of tetrahedral volumes in three dimensions and triangular areas in two. CFD more accurately represents complex geometries and allows for relative movement of meshes enabling simulation of multiple moving bodies. 'ibis paper presents two examples of how CFD simulation can be used to assess mine and tunnel ventilation problems formerly addressed by application of analytical solutions which were developed assuming ideal incompressible conditions. CFD simulation is used to evaluate the impact of varying the airflow in a descentionally ventilated airway on the layering along the roof of smoke and hot gases resulting from a vehicle fire. Control of the smoke layer is required to enable safe egress from the vehicle, particularly if the vehicle is for personnel transport, and to ensure control of the fire contaminants throughout the ventilation system. The airflow required to prevent layering against the ventilation direction, calculated from the Bakke and Leach relations (Bakke and Leach, 1962), is compared with the CFD simulation results. An evaluation of the pressures, generated as a vehicle enters a tunnel portal, using CFD simulation, is also presented for unflared and flared portal configurations. These simulation results are compared with predictions derived using an analytical method which assumes one-dimensional and incompressible flow. Results of the CFD simulation are presented in an animated video format. SIMULATION OF BACKLAYERING In designing a ventilation system for a transit tunnel, the ability of the ventilating air to control and prevent backlayering of smoke and hot gases resulting from a vehicle fire is of prime concern. The buoyant nature of hot smoke causes it to rise relative to the colder, fresh air provided by the ventilation system. If the vehicle fire occurs in a descentionally ventilated tunnel, the smoke may tend to move upgrade in a layer above the incoming ventilation airflow. The layer may become thick enough to engulf a substatntial part of the tunnel cross-section upgrade of the incident that comprises the evacuation route. This effect is termed "backlayering' and it is similar to the development of methane layers in mines for which most studies related to backlayering have been done. Prediction Techniques Analytical A number of studies have been conducted (Bakke and Leach, 1962) to define the characteristics of this phenomena and as a result have produced relations which are used both in the mine and transit ventilation fields to define the air velocities required to control layering. In the transit industry the air velocity required to prevent the backlayering phenomena from occuring during a vehicle fire is called the "critical velocity" (Associated Engineers, 1975) and is dependent upon a number of factors: tunnel height, cross-sectional area and grade; ambient air temperature and density; and the heat release rate of the fire. Common practice in transit ventilation design is to provide an airflow which meets or exceeds the critical velocity. In order to determine whether or not the critical velocity can be achieved with a particular ventilation system, a one-dimensional simulation of the tunnel network is typically performed using programs such as the Subway Environment Simulation program (SES) originally developed in the late 1970's (Associated Engineers, 1980). The results obtained from SES are compared to the critical velocity to determine the adequacy of the ventilation system. Computational Fluid Dynamics For the backlayering simulations, a commercial CFD code which has been used successfully in a wide variety of engineering applications, was used. It provides numerous options for modeling laminar and turbulent flows, multiple turbulence models, definition of multiple species and chemical reactions between them, a variety of boundary conditions (including constant pressure and constant velocity inlets) and the ability to apply user-defined FORTRAN subroutines. It includes the ability to model conductive, convective, and radiative heat transfer. FLUENT also permits the use of "body-fitted coordinates" to match the computational mesh or grid to complex real-world geometries. Computational Fluid Dynamics Model The model developed to simulate the backlayering phenomena is comprised of an airway of rectangular cross-section, 4 meters wide, 4.5 meters high, and 200 meters long. INTRODUCTION Located approximately 48 km (30 miles) south of Dallas, Texas, use to be the site of the Superconducting Super Collider. For those of you unfamiliar with the project, this was a multi-billion dollar project taken on by the U.S. Government for the further advancement of technology, medicine, and science. Major components of the project consisted of a Linear Accelerator known as the LINAC; three accelerating rings known as the Low Energy Boosters (LEB), Medium Energy Booster (MEB) and the High Energy Booster (HEB); the East and West Campuses where the Inner Reactor Halls would have been located; and the 87 km (54 mile) main collider tunnel. Unfortunately, this all came to an end on December 6, 1993, with the termination of the project due to the Government's cancellation of funds. This paper will deal with the two of the underground contracts before the termination. These two contracts were the 1122 contract which ran from N25 to N40 and the 1130 contract which ran from N40 to N55. (See figure 1) The 1122 contract was awarded to us in July of 1992 and consisted of the excavation and support of six (6) shaft varying in diameter from 5.5 m (18 feet) to 8 m (26 feet) and ranging from 39.6 m (130 feet) to 61 m (200 feet) deep and the driving of approximately 13,100 m (.43,000 If.) of main collider tunnel. Paste backfill is a pumpable, flowable, non-Newtonian fluid consisting generally of mine tailings and cement. Paste is prepared from dilute slurries of tailings. This is done by dewatering the slurries with conventional thickening or filtering. Backfill with a paste consistency is prepared by mixing dewatered tailings with cement and water to obtain the desired consistency of medium slump concrete. The paste is pumped with concrete pumps over relatively long (1 km or 0.6 mile) horizontal distances. More commonly, though, it flows by gravity down a mine shaft and then horizontally to the void being filled. Alternatively, cement can be added near the end of the pipeline. A certain proportion of fine particles <20 µm (<625 mesh) must be present in pastes but particles of aggregate can be added without significantly affecting the flow characteristics. Detailed testwork is necessary to design a system to prepare and place paste backfill. Testwork must determine dewatering characteristics, strength of mixes and friction in pipelines. Plants must be well engineered and controlled with PLCs because high quality control is necessary to prevent plugged pipelines and excessive pressures. Relatively small amounts of cement (3% to 5%) produce stiff backfill material 1.5 to 3.5 MPa (217 to 507 psi). The advantages of paste backfill in a mining operation include reduced mine dewatering, labor and materials savings, reduced tailings impoundment requirements, good support properties and reduced spills underground. In certain cases where more than 30% of the weight of the ore is sold as a product, the entire tailings stream can be placed underground. Paste technology can he used for surface or underground placement of tailings.

This paper presents the results on noise testing of a fan only, as well as the results of a steel silencer and of flexible silencers that were connected directly to a fan. On-site facilities and free-field method set by the British Standards Institution were used to measure and then compare the fan only and different practical silencer configuration setups. In order to determine the fan-silencer combination that would give the maximum noise attenuation, total noise intensity, noise contributed to by the fan motor only, as well as aerodynamical noise created through air interacting with the fan parts were considered to obtain decibel readings for the octave bands. Subsequently, the optimal configuration found was the setup with flexible silencers on the fan inlet and the fan outlet. If only one silencer is used, it should be installed on the fan inlet. The aerodynamic noise affects the low frequencies. The flow noise is then overtaken at 1 kHz by the mechanical noise.

The US Bureau of Mines studied the mechanism of shear flocculation of silica with stearic acid. At pH 6 and 12, shear flocculation of silica was not observed with the addition of up to 4.5 x 10-4 M (5 lb/st) stearic acid. However, in the presence of 0.1 M NaCl at pH 6, shear-flocculation was observed at stearic acid concentrations = 10-4 M (22.5 lb/st). Adsorption of stearic acid on silica was studied using stearic acids spin-labeled with a doxyl group. The presence of the spin-labeling group did not greatly affect the shear flocculation properties of stearic acid. Adsorption of labeled stearic acid on silica was measured as a function of surfactant concentration with electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy and gas chromatography (GC). The GC results indicated that the stearic acid was predominately adsorbed on the surface at concentrations above 10-4 M. From the EPR spectra, the formation of aggregates of stearic acid was apparent at concentrations of approximately 10-5 M (22.5 lb/st). The results are discussed in terms of a possible mechanism for shear flocculation.

A mechanism has been proposed for autogenous grinding that involves three distinct types of breakage: self impact breakage, media breakage and abrasion. Based on this analysis a mathematical model and an autogenous grinding simulator have been developed. Using pilot plant data fitted to the model, the simulator was tested and employed to examine both the scale-up problem and the effect of feed size distribution on performance.

The calculated potential energies of interaction between hydrophobic particle of three minerals (rhodochrosite, quartz and talc) and air bubble show that the energy of hydrophobic interaction is the dominant factor for their attachment. An attachment rate equation, integrating particle -bubble collision and adhesion by introducing a "capture efficiency", has been put forward. It was found that the hydrophobic particle-bubble aggregates can not be disconnected in the bulk zone of flotation cell, whereas in the impeller zone the breakup may occur, particularly for the coarser particles captured by bubble. Finally, the flotation rate constant was estimated theoretically and verified by experiments.

This paper describes a case study for the ventilation planning at Utah Fuel Company&apos;s Skyline Mines which are located outside Price. Utah. The Skyline Mines are currently comprised of two longwall coal mining blocks located in two different mines. A third replacement longwall block is currently being developed. Future ventilation systems for the mines were determined by establishing ventilation models developed from data collected during a detailed ventilation survey. The paper discusses the challenge to coordinate immediate ventilation requirements with long-term demands. The continuous movement of the longwall, which frequently represented the only open split in the ventilation network, resulted in cyclic ventilation demands dependent upon the length of the tailgate. A series of system configuration changes were recommended based on the results of the network modeling exercise and an economic evaluation of the various options. The scope and cost of the configuration changes, and the mead improvement resulting from these changes is discussed.
