Available literature on the effect of re-entrainment on overall airborne dust concentration in mine airways or the fundamental mechanisms of coal dust re-entrainment in mine atmosphere is scant (Shankar and Ramani, 1991). Therefore, as part of the Respirable Dust Center's ongoing research, the following three-part study was undertaken: •a study of the re-entrainment phenomena of anthracite and bituminous coal dust particles in a wind tunnel under the influence of varying air velocities; •a study of the same in the Lake Lynn Laboratory Mine of the USBM with both air flow and walking by personnel causing re-entrainment; and •the mathematical modeling and computer simulation of the re-entrainment phenomenon. In this paper, results from the re-entrainment studies in the wind tunnel and the Lake Lynn Laboratory mine are presented. Comparing the results from the two studies, it was observed that increasing the air velocity increased the rate of re-entrainment (Shankar and Ramani, 1994a) and the rate of re-entrainment decreased with the time of exposure of the source dust to the flowing air. In addition, when the source dust was composed of particles of different sizes, the airborne dust concentrations due to re-entrainment were higher than when the source dust was composed of particles of the same size. The contribution of airborne dust concentration due to airflow was negligible compared to the contribution due to walking.

For the years 1990 and 1991, West Virginia's underground coal small-mine fatality rate was approximately 10 times higher than the national coal-industry fatality rate. Although the number of fatalities went down from 22 in 1991 to 17 in 1992, West Virginia still led the nation in coal-mining fatalities. A team of mining and safety professionals from West Virginia, interfacing with the Mine Safety and Health Administration and the West Virginia Office of Miners' Health, Safety and Training, studied this problem. A clear path for formal intervention was determined and is presented here.

Sedimentary rock fractures commonly occur in the vicinity of outcrops. Mine highwalls and highway cuts provide excellent views of these near-surface joint systems. This paper explains the origin, characterization, distribution and extent of the these joint systems with reference to the lithologic composition of the rocks. The practical implications of these joint systems on the operation of a mine are described. Included are discussions of the discontinuous deformation that results from surface subsidence, the stability of mine portals and near-outcrop underground operations, and the stability of highwalls when using highwall miners and strip operations. Some design procedures are recommended to minimize the problems encountered within mining areas having intense joint systems.

A computer aided design software system for long range coal surface mine planning has been developed by the authors. The system is composed of two subsystems: a coal deposite sub- system and a long range mine planning system. The geological parameters are estimated and a grid model is formed, then a 3-D block model can be developed for mining design. The long range surface mine planning system is based on oriented graph simulation and combined approaches to seek for the optimal deign alternative. This mining model consists of a number of sub-models to realize mining design functions such as: calculation of mining volume and coal quality by graph scanning; determination of operational stripping ratio by interactive design; varification of annual coal production; delimitation and development of dumping site; optimization of material flow direction and volumes by Linear Programming; surface mine production scheduling by interactive iteration; etc. The software package was developed on PC computer 486. It features classified menu guide, module structure, figure and graph representation on the screen and flexible interactive functions. This system has been applied to an open cut coal mine and predicted functions have been obtained.

The SX-EW plant consists of three parallel trains with two extraction and two stripping stages, with the mixing chambers situated on the same side of the settlers, using a coalescing launder to direct the solution flow to the outlet weirs in the side as the mixers. In the tankfarm the loaded organic tanks will include a coalescing packed column to separate the aqueous entrainment. Organic from gunk will be recovered in a packed column, instead of a centrifuge. The EW plant utilize polymer concrete cells with permanent stainless steel cathodes with edge strips on side and bottom, without wax.

Newmont Gold Company has advantageously used the capabilities of mineral oxidizing bacteria to develop a process for pretreatment of low grade sulfidic and carbonaceous-sulfidic refractory gold ores. The biooxidation process results in the oxidation of the sulfidic minerals with increased exposure of gold for subsequent gold recovery. The biooxidized carbonaceous-sulfidic ores cannot be heap leached with cyanide because of the "preg-robbing" characteristics of the carbonaceous matters in the ores. An alternative heap leach process using ammonium thiosulfate was developed to extract gold from the "preg-robbing" biooxidized ores. The ammonium thiosulfate leach process has been successfully practiced both in laboratory and pilot plant testing. Satisfactory test results encourage the continuation of process development.

The stability of spoil and highwall slopes are important to successful strip mining. This paper discusses soil parameters of importance in stability analysis. The common mechanisms of spoil failure are discussed. Modes of highwall failure are also outlined. The importance of water to stability is presented. Dragline mining methods most suited to creating spoil and highwall profiles that address stability needs are provided. It is concluded that groundwater and surface runoff must be well controlled, and that it will often be necessary to modify spoil and highwall configurations to achieve a stable overall slope angle.

The remote face loading and entry convergence monitoring systems, employed at some of the Cyprus Amax's underground coal mines, have been able to continuously record changes in face shield resistance across and entry convergence ahead of the longwall face at any moment during longwall mining. The instrumental data obtained from these systems plus in-situ observations during the mining operation can help us better understand the mechanism of overburden strata movement above a longwall face and verify the effectiveness of the current face and entry supports. This paper describes the functions of both the face and entry monitoring systems, and discusses our findings and the issues related to successful ground control for longwall mining.

The Hutti greenstone belt comprising predominantly of low-potassium tholeitic basalt has undergone regional metamorphism of a transition zone between greenchist to amphibolite facies. The important mineral constituents of the volcanic suite are amphibole and plagioclase which appear to be the product of regional metamorphism. These minerals have been recognized as the main indicators of metamorphic temperature and pressure. With a view to understand the P-T conditions of metamorphism of the belt, electron microprobe studies were carried out on amphibole and plagioclase and the chemical data was used to decipher the metamorphic conditions. The results obtained indicated a metamorphic temperature of about 6000 c and pressure of 5 kbs. for the Hutti greenstone belt.

The evaluation criteria for cost comparison of the Gearless Drive, also called Ringmotor or wrap-around motor, as variable-speed drive with a Twin Drive System using synchronous motors are reviewed. Both mechanical and electrical components of the drive system are considered. The evaluation criteria are described and for the cost comparison the applicable method is demonstrated. The cost comparison is based on a medium and large sized mill system. Each drive package will display cost details with regard to capital cost, maintenance, power losses, overall efficiency, overhead and loss of production. As conclusion the benefits and disadvantages of the two drive/mill packages will be presented together with a payback diagram.

During the next five years, there will be a trend toward performing belt cleaner maintenance while the conveyor is in operation. Most mines and industrial sites that use belt conveyors have an in-house safety rule that the belt must be stopped before maintenance work can be performed on any belt-cleaning device. This is a good rule. Most cleaning devices are positioned against the belt with hardware that requires the service technician to reach or climb into the chute to change the cleaning blades. But this simple rule becomes more complicated as production demands require higher conveyor availability and provide fewer conveyor outages. In many cases, today’s conveyors are expected to be available 98% to100% of the time.

Conventional triboelectrification based dry coal beneficiation methods require ground coal as a prerequisite feed material, energy intensive static-in-line mixer or cyclonic tribocharger configuration, and transport and/or improvement in the design of free-fall separators to improve the separation efficiency of [me pyrite/mineral matter from coal. The proposed paper illustrates the two concepts. First, the use of ceramic media in a polyurethane lined attitor in achieving simultaneous grinding and differential charging. Second, the use of an electrocentrifuge to selectively separate coal from mineral matter present in the triboelectrified mixture. It is of interest to note that some ceramic media can satisfy the requirements of both desired density and work function to achieve grinding and differential charging.

Introduction Since the beginning of operations at the pellet plant at Ponta Ubu ES, Samarco Mineração SA has produced pellets for direct reduction and blast furnace processes. Of the total amount of pellets produced from 1977 through 1993, 55 % are used in the blast furnace, about 45 Mt (49.6 million st). The principal components of pellet gangue are calcium oxide, magnesium oxide, silica and alumina. They should be added in adequate quantities to guarantee the mechanical resistance of the fired pellets under blast furnace conditions. Over the years, the pellets produced by Samarco had a silica content between 2.5% and 2.8% and varying binary basicity preferably between 0.8 and 0.85. On the other hand, the increasing amount of industrial waste in siderurgical plants caused by the increase of steel production has caused some countries to put into practice methods to reduce the volume of slag produced in the blast furnace. This paper's goal is to find an alternative for decreasing the amount of slag produced in the blast furnace. It is possible to decrease pellet gangue by decreasing the silica content to about 2%, leaving the metallurgical properties and quality of pellets unaltered. For this work, Samarco pellets were used with Si02 between 2.5% and 2.8%, pellets with high silica and pellets with Si02 between 2.0% and 2.3% low silica. Both were partially fluxed by the range of varying basicity CaO/SiO2 from 0.8 to 0.95 during production. Experimental tests on pilot scale Thhis work began in January 1986 in the pilot plant (pot grate, Fig. 1) at Samarco. Its goal was to obtain preliminary data that would indicate the bybility of the project. It also formed a solid base to extend the studies in tests on an industrial scale of production for blast-furnace pellets. The pot grate is a test furnace composed of a gas burner, a combustion chamber and a grate, connected by hot air ducts. The burner is fed by a mixture of LPG and air. It reaches high temperatures through oxygen injection. The combustion chamber heats the air that comes from the turbocompressor. This hot air flows through the ducts to the grate on which the pellet samples are fired. During updraft drying, downdraft drying, preheating, firing and afterfiring, the upward and downward direction of the air flow can be controlled by valves driven by pneumatic cylinders. The pot grate indurator was fully automated in August 1989. Positive and negative pressures measurements resulting from gas passing through the pellet layer, as well as temperature readings, are recorded in graphs in relation to time for all tests. The tests depend on the various steps carried out in sequence that can influence the results of the tests. Therefore, some criteria were adopted to restrict the number of variables in the process. This was done to facilitate the results of the analysis. The pellets were composed of concentrate, bentonite, hydrated calcitic lime and metallurgical coal, all regularly used in the pellet plant. The material balance of the pellets mix was determined from the chemical analysis of the components. Table 1 shows the chemical characteristics of the concentrate and the additives used in the pilot plant and industrial tests. The basicity has a marked influence on the metallurgical properties of the pellets produced by Samarco with a silica content between 2.5% and 2.8%. However, for pellets with low silica (about 2%), it was necessary to study the variation in the parameters of quality in a wide range of basicities to deliniate with precision a scope of work. A large variety of low-silica blast-furnace pellets were produced at the pilot plant with binary basicity varying between 0.8 and 0.95. After chemical analysis, those pellets were separated into five groups of different binary basicity (0.8, 0.84, 0.87, 0.90 and 0.95). Each was then split, one part for metallurgical tests in the laboratory at Samarco and another to be evaluated in a laboratory for metallurgical tests in Germany. Introduction An examination of statistics for the world phosphate fertilizer industry since 1980 reveals that there is an increasing tendency for fertilizer-manufacturing activity to concentrate in the areas of phosphate-rock mining. The economic justification for this resource-oriented strategy is clear. The choice between shipping phosphate rock, a comparatively low-value product, and shipping a more valuable finished fertilizer product will always, as long as cost considerations control the decision, be resolved in favor of the latter. The historical existence of substantial phosphate fertilizer-manufacturing capacity, which is oriented toward fertilizer-consuming activities and dependent on imported phosphate rock, shows that narrow cost considerations have not always determined the industry's location. One is entitled to ask what conditions have changed to precipitate the observed relocations, and how permanent are these changes. These questions are the subject of this investigation. Recent trends in world phosphate trade Since 1980, the changing pattern of world trade in phosphate materials reflects an increased interest in manufacturing phosphate fertilizer in rock-producing areas. This is shown by the decline in the total tonnage of phosphate rock being traded worldwide compared to world consumption of phosphate fertilizers (Fig. 1). This relative decline has continued since 1984, which is a longer period of time than could be explained by temporary cyclical market factors. Other evidence corroborates this conclusion. The world's phosphate-rock production is relatively concentrated geographically. In 1992, the top ten producing countries accounted for 92% of world production. Figure 2 shows that the share of world fertilizer production in the top ten rock producers has increased. Yet, further evidence of the direction of trade changes can be had by looking at the pattern of the world's sulfur trade. The first step in the manufacture of any of the widely used phosphate fertilizer products is the acidulation of phosphate rock with sulfuric acid. In most instances, phosphate fertilizer producers have found it economical to produce their own sulfuric acid by burning elemental sulfur, and such operations account for over 60% of all sulfur consumption in the world. 1 Therefore, a concentration of phosphate fertilizer production in rock-producing countries should produce a similar concentration of sulfur imports in the same countries. Figure 3 suggests that there has been a tendency since 1989 for sulfur exports to go increasingly to the rockproducing countries. World phosphate-location strategy is not limited to the alternatives of shipping rock and shipping finished fertilizers. A third alternative consists of producing phosphoric acid, the principal phosphate fertilizer intermediate, at the rock deposit, and then exporting it to market-oriented ammonium phosphate plants. This arrangement offers the importing country the advantages of shipping a more concentrated product while retaining the economic multiplier benefits of a domestic high-analysis fertilizer industry. India, and several other countries, imports merchant-grade phosphoric acid to use as input for the domestic value-added fertilizer industries. For various reasons, the trade in phosphoric acid has never quite lived up to the promise suggested by the foregoing discussion. Figure 4 shows no growth in this trade in the last ten years, either in absolute terms or in relation to the world's consumption of phosphoric acid. Most of the decline in the trade in phosphorous in rock form has been replaced with trade in finished fertilizers. The trade in superphosphoric acid was a growth activity in the late 1970s with the growth in US exports to the USSR, and this trade survived the Carter-era embargoes of US-Soviet trade. However, no additional sizable markets for superphosphoric acid developed, and other suppliers sought out the Soviet market. The problem with superphosphoric acid is that the cost of its incremental concentration is as great as the savings from shipping the more concentrated product. The Soviet market was a special case. The political breakup of the Soviet Union disrupted the superphosphoric acid trade after 1991 and led to a shutdown of the US export capacity.

This paper looks at four critical lubricants used in the conveyor systems of the northern Albertan oil sand facility. The requirements for the lubricants used in the electric motors and gear boxes of the drive systems, the pulley bearing and the idler bearings are discussed in terms of the applications and the environment. A number of developments that have occurred in recent years are presented. Data from the field and from custom designed testing in the laboratory are used to support the role of simulation testing in problem solving in this area of technology.

For mineral processing spirals, mathematical force equilibrium models are sought to extend the spiral performance envelop. In Part 1 of this report, a complete geometric description of the helical spiral and its trough or channel contour is provided. The secondary circulatory fluid motion in the transverse direction that develops when water flows down a tightly turning curvilinear path and its implications for gravity separation are discussed. Different forces that act on the particle during its passage through the spiral are enumerated and quantified for a better appreciation of their relative contributions and roles in the separation process. Three force equilibrium models from the hydrology literature on sed iment transport are employed to simulate a typical spiral. While the results are promising in that the models mimic the broad performance characteristics of the spiral, what is needed is a more general spiral model taking explicit cognizance of the missing components essential to the spiral description. These are such components as centrifugal force and the steep tangential slope of the channel deck. Results of this latter exercise are deferred to Part 2.

Zimbabwe The Republic of Zimbabwe is situated in south central Africa and north of the Tropic of Capricorn. The country is land-locked, bounded on the north by Zambia, on the south by the Republic of South Africa, on the east by Mozambique and on the southwest by Botswana. Nearly 400,000 sq km in area, Zimbabwe is bigger than both France and Spain and nearly three times the size of England. The outstanding physical feature is the central plateau, known as the highveld, which is about 650 km long and 80 km wide at an elevation of +1,200 m, and on which the Jena Mines is located. Because of its elevation and inland position, Zimbabwe's climate is temperate, generally drier and cooler than is normally expected in the tropics. Zimbabwe's population is in excess of 10 million. English is the official language, with Ndebele and Shona being the main ethnic languages. About one million people live in Greater Harare, the capital city. The basic unit of currency is the Zimbabwe dollar, which has depreciated substantially over the past few years. Currently (November, 1995), the exchange rate is $US 1.00 = $Zim 9.00, compared with $US 1 .OO = $Zim 2.50 in 1991. Project Area The Jena Mines Complex is situated in central Zimbabwe (Figure 1), in the Silobela area of the lower Gweru River valley. The mine site is 270 km from Harare by paved and gravel road. The Jena Mines property consists of a single rectangular (8 km by 5 km) shaped mining lease with an area of approximately 40 sq km (Figure 2). Annual average precipitation is 720 mm falling in the summer months between October and April. Mean daily maximum temperature is 24°C in October and mean minimum is 14°C in July. The southern parts of Zimbabwe have experienced drought conditions over the past four years which has affected water and power supplies. The countryside in the Jena area is generally low relief with a gentle slope to the northwest. The mine site topography is flat with an average elevation of 1,210 m. Zimbabwe Mining Industry Zimbabwe has a long mining tradition, particularly for gold. In the 1,200 years preceding European colonization, it is estimated that about 4,000 ancient mines produced between 600 and 800 tonnes of gold. Since the turn of the century more than 1,700 tonnes of gold have been produced. An excellent infrastructure has developed to support the mining industry. This includes a well- maintained system of paved roads, railway links to major mining areas, an electricity grid covering most of the country, and numerous industries manufacturing a wide range of mining supplies. Jena History The claims in the Jena Mines area are among the earliest registered in Zimbabwe. The gold potential was easily recognized because of extensive ancient (pre-European) workings. European trading beads from the 14th Century have been recovered from anthills in the mine area. Development of the Jena Mines commenced in 1898 and several mines have operated intermittently over the past 90 years. The longterm aim of this research project is to find fast ways of simulating the recoverable reserves of a deposit for input into financial Monte Carlo simulations without having to conditionally simulate the whole orebody many times. The first step in this re- search is to visualize and quantify the ore tonnage T and the metal quantity Q above an arbitrary cutoff z. This paper presents detailed results for one specific distribution, the lognormal. These lead to a suggestion of a fast way of simulating QTz curves.

A ventilation analytical system adapting nodal pressure method using skyline modified Choleski's decomposition scheme for network-flow analysis and a new practical system to estimate various thermal air conditions has been developed. The quasi-linear equations for solving steady-state network airflow have been described using the connective function in general forms. The skyline modified decomposition scheme has an advantage on rapid convergence and the sake of computer memory space com- pared with other schemes. The key part of the analysis for climatic conditions through network airways is how to estimate the temperature of the airway rock-surface with partly or full wet condition. A practical and simple solution without any iterative calculations for its estimation has been proposed. This new solution is applicable to practical ranges of airflow temperature, humidity, rock thermal properties and wetness. The present analytical sys- tem have been successfully applied to a ventilation simulator named "M1VENA"developed by authors.
