The Coeur d'Alene Mining District of northern Idaho is remarkable for its number of large ore bodies and for the amount of its historical production of lead, zinc and silver (Fig. 1). Since veins were first discovered in 1884, more than 127 Mt (140 million st) of ore have been produced from narrow, high-grade veins. Mining continues at the Lucky Friday, Galena and Sunshine mines (Fig. 2). All have been in production for decades. At these mines, more efficient mining and exploration techniques have reduced costs while adding significant new reserves. Even the old Bunker Hill Mine, where ore was first found in 1875, continues operation on a limited basis, partly involving production of world-class pyromorphite specimens. Until recently, the Coeur Mine was also a profitable silver producer. Other large producers have included the Star-Morning, Hecla, Page, Standard-Mammoth, Hercules and Gold Hunter mines (Fig. 2). The first deposits were discovered by prospectors who spilled over from the Murray gold mining district, 24 km (15 miles) to the north. The Bunker Hill Mine was founded the year after the first veins were discovered. Bunker Hill has now operated for more than 100 years. Production includes 2.3 Mt (2.6 million st) of lead, 1.1 Mt (1.2 million st) of zinc and 4.1 kt (132 million oz) of silver. Total district production through 1996 (Springer, 1997) amounted to 7.3 Mt (8.1 million st) of lead, 3 Mt (3.3 million st) of zinc, and 34.5 kt (1.109 billion oz) of silver. This record establishes the district as the largest recorded producer of silver in the world, while also yielding major quantities of lead and zinc. Only Potosi, Bolivia, may have produced more silver, although records are unclear. Despite the district's longevity, historic production and current activity, the published literature on the district lags behind with regard to recent concepts of district geology. The most recent comprehensive US Geological Sur- vey (USGS) bulletins (Hobbs et al., 1965; Fryklund, 1964) are dated. Much research in the last half century has been short-lived or geographically restricted because the district is large and its geology is complex - and even this research tends to remain unpublished. The Atlantic City iron mine is located in Fremont County in central Wyoming, near the historic gold mining camps of Atlantic City and South Pass City. The mine lies on the southeast flank of the Wind River Mountains at an elevation of about 2,470 m (8,100 ft) above sea level (Fig. 1). An 81-h M2 (200-acre) tailings impoundment at the Atlantic City taconite operation has been a source of blowing dust. The site qualified for reclamation under Wyoming&apos;s Abandoned Mine Land (AML) reclamation program. The ultimate reclamation construction incorporated commercially available organic amendments and fertilizers into a 300-mm- (12-in.-) thick cap of a sterile clay loam cover material. The water level was lowered in an adjacent flooded mine pit that was feeding uncontrolled seeps into the tailings basin. A wide tailings pond spillway was built that allows flood control while minimizing seasonal water-level fluctuations in the pond. Rock berms and rock snow fences were built for wind-erosion control and soil-moisture preservation. Future work includes tree planting in the protective wind/ snow shadows of rock berms and rock snow fences and plugging a decant pipe. US Steel opened the Atlantic City iron mine in August 1962. It closed in 1983. Taconite iron ore was mined by surface methods. The ore was magnetically separated from the waste. The magnetic concentrate was mixed with bentonite, formed into pellets and roasted to produce a blast furnace feed stock for US Steel&apos;s blast furnaces in Geneva, UT. The pellets were hauled by rail to the Geneva Iron Works. The Atlantic City Mine produced three types of wastes. These included waste rock overburden from mining, a coarse-grained (sand to small-gravel sized), nonmagnetic reject rock termed "cobbs" and fine-grained tailings ranging from 600 to 75 µm (28 to <200 mesh). Water chemistry data were used to identify the sources of ground-water and surface-water inflow to the IOZ block cave mine. Water samples were collected to obtain vertical and lateral hydrochemical profiles within different levels of the underground workings. Water chemistry data were evaluated in conjunction with geologic and structural information to define controls on locations of ground-water inflows, and to select targets for drilling and interception of water. Drilling has intercepted water-producing zones that were previously unidentified through mapping and drilling. The program has resulted in a reduction in water inflows to the block cave area.

DOUG HALBE: We&apos;re not quite to the end of our session, but we&apos;re close. We&apos;ve had a lot of fun with some of these spill ideas. But these are serious problems, and I think we might be able to benefit by continuing to compile these. Several years ago, the metallurgists at the various operations of Gold Fields Mining Company had a newsletter that came out every two months for several years. This publication consisted of short articles by the staff at the various operations, plus a few others, on problems they&apos;d had and how they solved them. One very useful article, "Things We&apos;d Have Done Differently at Chimney Creek," was written shortly after start-up. John Marsden was the editor and John Mansanti contributed to it, as did Jim Arnold (our distinguished co-chair) and Mike Gleason. I would be interested, with the permission of the audience, in editing that article to make it a little bit less abrasive and putting it into the record here. I think it&apos;s a useful SME function to maintain a list of things we&apos;ve done wrong in plant design, things we don&apos;t want to do again. If we have another open session in the future, would others be willing, even anonymously, to contribute, bring slides, and say "Hey, look at the goofs we made?" [laughter, followed by support from the audience] Okay, we&apos;ll plan on that. And we&apos;ll try to include the Chimney Creek list in the transcript of this session-perhaps edited a bit.

Peruvian legislation requires the preparation of an Environmental Impact Study (EIS) for new and expanding mines/beneficiation facilities and the preparation and implementation of an Environmental Adjustment and Management Program (PAMA) to control and mitigate environmental impacts associated with existing mining/beneficiation activities. Shepherd Miller, Inc., developed guidance documents for preparing an EIS and PAMA for Peru&apos;s Ministry of Energy and Mines and presented workshops to Peru&apos;s mining industry on preparing an EIS and PAMA. This paper discusses the process and approach taken and the results.

Speed and torque control of standard A.C. induction motors can be accomplished using a variety of devices ranging from mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical. Also, the motor can be specified as an A.C. wound rotor or D.C. motor using the associated controls. Normally, any one of these drive types can be adequately used to provide the torque control necessary to accelerate a conveyor belt system. The selection will depend on the economics, experience, and preference of the designer or end user. These drive types will be presented from a functional and performance viewpoint to assist in the understanding of the available technology.

Jerry&apos;s group uses predictive tools to monitor and predict the equipment failure throughout the mine, from pumps to shovels to motors, you name it. These innovations apply to both technical and social aspects of production operations and may be high-tech or low- tech in nature. They may be based on the implementation of a few large-scale "breakthrough projects or numerous small-scale activities, depending on the availability of capital funding and the company&apos;s past experience. Successful managers systematically identify innovative opportunities that capitalize on their organization&apos;s expertise. They quantify the associated benefits and risks and then manage the implementation of selected innovations to minimize cost and uncertainty. They monitor the results of the innovation after it has been implemented and adjust operating and managerial practices as necessary to maximize the innovation&apos;s benefit.

Ashanti Goldfields Company (AGC) is the largest gold mining company in Western Africa. Their jewel operation is a highly inte­grated set of mines and plants situated in Obuasi, in the Ashanti region of Ghana. This operation is responsible for mining 5.5 mil­lion tonnes of ore at 4.6 git annually from a series of open pits and underground mines. The sulphide ore is highly refractory with untreated gold recoveries in the range of 30-40%. The milling facilities are quite varied and include an oxide treatment plant (OTP), a heap leach, a sulphide roaster circuit (PTP), a tailings treahnent plant (TIP) and the most recent, a sulphide treatment plant (STP). The sulphide treatment plant, the world's largest stirred tank biooxidation circuit, was commissioned in early 1994. This plant treats approximately 800 tonnes of refractory gold con­centrate per day with overall recoveries of75-85o/o(ll, Biooxidation was selected for its ease of operation and less exotic maintenance requirements as well as its ability to achieve comparable gold recoveries. Unfortunately, despite stirred tank biooxidation being one of the lower cost methods of treating refractory ores, it is still too costly for low grade refractory materials. GeoBiotics, Inc. has developed a proprietary technology that allows the economic treatment of lower grade refractory gold ores through heap biooxidation. AGC has a significant resource of low grade refractory sulphide ore. This ore is too low grade to warrant BIOX™ sulphide treatment and its oxide plant recov­ery is low at 35-45%. GeoBiotics and AGC have completed pre­liminary testing and economic analysis of heap biooxidation for this material. Additionally, the feasibility of producing a gravity concentrate from the tailings of the sulphide treatment plant has been explored. This concentrate would be coated onto the low grade sulphide and biooxidized concurrently. Gold recoveries for the biooxidized low grade sulphide have increased to 75% and the gravity recovery from the STP tailings has achieved 80% uti­lizing a Falcon concentrator. The preliminary economics of the proposed full scale plant are very favourable with a pre-tax IRR of 233% and a payback period of 6 months. This paper details the biooxidation testing, flow sheet devel­opment and preliminary economics of employing heap biooxi­dation for low grade refractory ore treatment at Ashanti Goldfields' Obuasi operation.

For over 100 years Degussa has worked together with the min­ing industry not only providing quality products but also develop­ing technologies to support these products through value added goods and services. For cyanide, these technologies include leach enhancement processes such as PAL™ and Solidox™, and cyanide detoxification with peroxygen based processes such as SILOX™ and Caro's acid using our DegOX™ technology. Degussa has also made important advances in how sodium cyanide is packaged and shipped with our liquid NaCN plant joint venture with MSI, CYANCO in Winnemucca, Nevada, and our Advantage SLS™ solid to liquid cyanide delivery system. All of these innovative technologies developed to support NaCN in mining, provide value to our customers and show Degussa's commitment to Responsible Care·11.1 and dedication to product stewardship. With Responsible Care and the customer in mind, Degussa has developed Advantage CCS™ cyanide control system, which will soon be available for the North American market. Currently there are several CCS units in service installed by Degussa AG (Germany), and we are in the process of designing the next gen­eration of the CCS which should be completed by late '98. Based on our experience working with gold and silver mines all over the world, there appeared to be an opportunity to further assist our customers by providing a better more automated way to control their cyanide additions. By providing the mine with an accurate method for maintaining their desired cyanide levels in their leach circuits, we could help them avoid underdosing and the associated gold and silver losses, and overdosing the cyanide which not only wastes cyanide but may increase treatment costs as well. In the early 1990's, when we began to introduce our CCS units, there were several cyanide controllers and on-line analyzers avail­able. However, they appeared to be too complicated and not made to stand the harsh conditions inside a mill. This resulted in exces­sive downtime and poor analytical results. We also found that many units would be installed but not commissioned by the sup­plier. Based on these observations, along with filtration and con­trol problems on some existing units, Degussa decided to design its own cyanide control system based on our extensive knowledge of cyanide chemistry, using the best components available worldwide.

Attendance exceeded 4,500 minerals professionals from all over the world at SME&apos;s March 9-11 Annual Meeting and Exhibit in Orlando, FL. The exhibit, of more than 600 booths, featured 398 of the mining industry&apos;s premier suppliers. The keynote session, "Change makers in the industry," opened the meeting. The session featured Jeffrey Clevenger, president of Cyprus Climax Metals; Mark Baker, senior vice president of Modular Mining Systems, a division of Komatsu; and John Correnti, vice chairman, president and chief executive officer of Nucor. The SME meeting also featured four specialty programs: Bulk materials handling by conveyor belt, Latin American perspectives, plant operators&apos; symposium and waste characterization and treatment. Also open to attendees were more than 60 technical sessions encom¬passing coal, the environment, industrial minerals, mining and exploration, minerals and metallurgical processing and minerals resource management. Ed Dowling was the chair of the 1998 SME technical programming committee. And Dowling, director of process management and engineering for Cyprus Minerals, acted as the host of the SME keynote session. Dowling said the mining industry has undergone incredible change over the last decade. And the forces of change continue to accelerate. These changes include globalization, regulatory pressures, technology, labor, competition, pricing and other market influences, he said. With that in mind, the SME program committee selected as the theme of this year&apos;s SME Annual Meeting, "The changing world of mining ... our role." Given some of the current commodity prices, Dowling said, the theme is timely. He also noted that a large percentage of the 60 technical sessions spoke to the evolving operational and business aspects of the mining industry as the industry crossed international boundaries. The keynote session mirrored the meeting theme by focusing on the increasing challenges and required changes the minerals industry faces. Dowling reminded keynote attendees that change is not a new idea. He said Benjamin Franklin described three types of people: Those who are immovable, those who can be moved and those who are movers. And so it was appropriate that three of the most forward-thinking movers in the business - Clevenger, Baker and Correnti - address the keynote session, Dowling said. John Callaway moderated the keynote session. He is senior correspondent for WTTW TV, the public broadcast station in Chicago. For the past 13 years, Callaway has served as host of WTTW&apos;s award-winning, primetime news analysis program, Chicago Tonight. Callaway said that the keynote changemakers are recognized as industry leaders whose vision has led to significant business transformation and results. The precipitation characteristics of copper and nickel cyanides from solutions continuing copper zinc and nickel cyano complexes are examined. Equilibrium precipitation calculations are presented as well as comparative experimental data. The practical significance of the precipitation data is discussed in the co·ntext of an initial step m an overall treatment strategy for mixed cyanide effluents.

Thiourea is recognized as a technically competitive alternative to cyanide for gold and silver extraction for a variety of ores and concentrates. This paper describes the results of a recent mini-pilot locked cycle test comparing cyanidation with acidothioureation treatment of gold bearing sulphide concentrate. The gold extractability of both methods was similar. The comparative metallurgical operating conditions and test results are summarized. Detailed byproduct solution analyses and environmental toxicity test results are presented and suggest that thioureation might result in acutely toxic byproducts even after treatment. Comparative process economics are summarized based on preliminary commercial operating flowsheets derived for the locked cycle case study. Capital and operating cost estimates are shown. The results indicate that cyanidation is more economically favorable within the constraints of the case study. Considerations for process selection between thioureation and cyanidation, for conceptual case studies, are discussed.

Thiourea is being applied as an industrial leaching agent for gold and silver only in a few cases. A CIP technique was developed which eliminates most of the obstacles against its use. Mild conditions for precious metals stripping from the loaded carbon simplifies process conditions in comparison to cyanide CIP technique. Examples are given.

There has been an increasing trend in recent months by regulatory agencies to require that estimates be made of the hydraulic head acting, under operational conditions, on the surface of primary leach pad liners. This move towards inferred performance standards, rather than specifying a prescriptive standard for all sites regardless of economics, is to be generally welcomed. The theory of flow on a sloped beach pad, which was developed by East et al, 1987 (Reference 1 and 3) has been refined and extended. Unitized curves have been developed by graphically displaying the seepage losses and resulting dissolved gold lost as seepage through the primary liner as an aid to pad liner selection and design. Very little information is available of actual hydraulic head profiles acting on the liners beneath heap leached ores. Attempts have been made to measure these by drilling from the top of the heap and installing piezometers at the base. With this procedure it is difficult to obtain accurate data due to the fact that the drilling operation itself creates a highly permeable vertical flow path which may not exist to the same degree elsewhere in the heap. Combined with the fact that it is almost impossible to ensure that the piezometer tip is sitting directly above the liner without the risk of causing some damage to the liner itself. The best time to install hydraulic head monitoring devices on the pad liner is during construction and when piezometers can be carefully placed directly above the liner and suitably protected hydraulic lines laid to ensure full hydrostatic head measurement with simple manometer devices.

Heap leach mining has long been an economical method for mining oxide copper ore, and with the U.S. Bureau of Mines' discovery of a way to economically strip gold and silver from carbon, it has become the standard in the gold and silver indus­try as well. Sulfide leach in copper recovery has always been a byproduct of oxide leach mining, although the methods and recovery rates have increased with technology. SX-EW has kindled a new interest in large deposits and dormant dumps of low grade sul­fide ore. Gold ore bio-oxidation was developed in the 1980's, but not tried on a large scale until US Gold built the Tonkin Springs Mine. This mine was dedicated to the large scale production of low grade sulfide ore that could be recovered through the newly discovered bio-oxidation method. On a small scale the method worked, but as time went on, problems with the process were costly and recovery was poor. US Gold did not have the finan­cial backing to perfect the process, and the mine was closed in 1990. Since that time, Newmont Gold Company has taken the lead and has dedicated a lot of resources to the perfection and implementation of this method. Some small mines have discov­ered that if they can use this technology they may be able to dou­ble and triple current ore reserves, because they will be able to mine deposits previously considered not to be economical.

Amax Gold's Sleeper Mine was brought to production as an open pit mining, cyanidation milling operation in March 1986. The Sleeper deposit is unique in that it contains zones of very high grade gold ore. Despite blending of ore, mill head grades have varied over a broad range. These grade variations were anticipated during mill design and affected, in particular, the sizing and selection of equipment for the CIP circuit. When grades proved to be even higher than anticipated, design operating parameters were adjusted shortly after start-up to accommodate the higher grades. Operating results have been excellent: during the first 18 months of operations the Sleeper mill has processed 375,600 tons of ore and produced 229,000 ounces of gold.

Welcome to RANDOL GOLD FORUM 88. It is clear from the list of delegates and speakers that this conference will lead to excellent discussions of the latest developments in this fast-moving industry. Less than a year ago Randol International Ltd. published an eleven-volume report titled "Innovations in Gold and Silver Recovery - Phase 111". In the short space of time since then, many new developments have been noted, many of which will be described in this Forum.
