The purpose of this work is to conduct a preliminary analysis of the spatial variations of the thickness of lignite layers in the area of the Amyndeo mine, and to estimate the lignite reserves of the mine. The reserves are estimated by the method of the Voronoi diagrams, using a group of mirror points to close the polygons around the boundaries of the mine. Two data sets are investigated. The first one corresponds to an exhausted part of the mine. The derived reserves estimates are compared with the actual data obtained by the Public Power Corporation (PPC) to validate the analysis. The second data set extends over the entire mine, and it is used to derive an approximate estimate of the total lignite reserves. A geostatistical analysis of the total layer thickness is performed. The experimental semivariograms are evaluated for both data sets in different spatial directions. Two possible theoretical models for the experimental semivariogram (the exponential and a novel Spartan model) are compared and discussed. An interpolated kriging map of the total thickness variation is produced accompanied by a map of the kriging precision. The performance of kriging interpolation is discussed in terms of cross validation measures.

The 56,000' (17 km) long San Vicente Aqueduct Pipeline tunnel is being constructed using precast concrete rings to act as preliminary ground support through two sections of the bored tunnel with lengths of 9,450' (2.9 km) and 33,700' (10.27 km).The six segment bolted trapezoidal ring was manufactured using a combination of steel fiber reinforced concrete and self compacting concrete in vertical moulds. This paper briefly describes the design and function of the segments, and reviews the development stages of the concrete mix, and the advantages and disadvantages of the adopted manufacturing method.

In 2005, CANMET-MMSL used its pool of expertise in ground control, open pit and underground mine engineering, mineral processing, information technology and applied mineralogy to launch a mine-to-mill research project. The objective of the project was to optimize the distribution of rock breakage energy among blasting, crushing and grinding activities, thereby maximizing the efficiency of energy utilization within comminution processes. Tests were designed to demonstrate that this approach could reduce the energy consumption, thus contributing to the reduction of Green House Gas (GHG) production in the Canadian mining industry. The project was accomplished in collaboration with DynoConsult and Dyno Nobel Canada Inc., a world leader in commercial explosives. Data analysis from 12 blasts (six with electronic and six with pyrotechnic detonators) in three different geological formations of a quarry (soft, medium and hard rock) shows that electronic blasting technology increases rock fragmentation by 15% (in hard rock) to 20% (in soft rock). A more uniform rock fragment size distribution is also obtained. The impact of the improved quality blast product on downstream processes of the quarry is a productivity increase of 5% in rock excavation and transportation, an energy reduction of 10% at the primary crusher and an increase of 15% of the primary crusher throughput. A soft-sensor prototype, based on primary crusher data (i.e. energy consumption, throughput, feed and product size distribution) and a simplified computerized process model, was developed for on-line measurement of the rock operating work index. Additionally, 385 rock samples and specimens were collected and prepared to determine the tensile and compressive strength of the rock material, to evaluate the aggregate crushing work index, and to examine the development of micro- and macro-fractures by means of binocular and SEM microscopy. Blast-induced rock damage was evaluated at the end of the laboratory testing program. Even though a reduction of rock hardness of around 30% was observed after blasting, the impact of the blasting method (i.e. use of electronic or pyrotechnic detonators) on the induced rock damage could not be observed. It is either absent or not perceptible with the accuracy of the measuring techniques and the number of samples analyzed.

Landsvirkjun—the national electric power company of Iceland—is building the Kárahnjúkar Hydroelectric Project in eastern Iceland. Two glacial river systems will be dammed and channeled through a series of tunnels into a 690 MW underground powerhouse. The Project has a total of 73 km of tunnels to be excavated of which mosthave been completed. From three access adits, three large diameter (7.2 m to 7.6 m),main-beam, gripper-type, Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) are being used to complete50-km of the waterway tunnel. Using the TBMs was a first in Iceland to excavate the complex Icelandic basalt formations, which consist of inclined layers of hard basaltic flows with weaker scoriaceous and sedimentary interbeds. Faults, fissures and dykes that frequently cross the lava flows posed both geologic and hydrogeologic difficulties to the TBM tunneling. This paper describes the extreme challenges that the men and equipment had to endure to complete the tunneling, including the harsh winter weather on the surface and the cold, abundant ground water inflows within the tunnels.

The use of industrial wastes, such as quarry fines of crushed stone, should represent a basic component of sustainable development indicators. Therefore, increasing investments should be foreseen in techniques of treatment and recycling of residues in mining, as well as by-product attainment that generate jobs and income. The standards of identification and discarding of industrial wastes vary significantly between countries. However, practically all nations have started becoming more restrictive regarding environmental legislation, especially concerning production, transport, treatment, recycling and final discarding of industrial wastes. Under an environmental point of view, solid wastes produced by a system (such as a quarry) can be handled in two ways: a) they can be discarded in piles or b) they can be internally or externally recycled and reused. This second practice is translated to an additional economic consequence such as an increase of income as well as a decreased environmental impact. This option is more advanced and should be included in company policy. This paper presents cases where this practice is used, i.e. diminishing the environmental liabilities through the use of the quarry fines in the manufacture of industrial devices, incorporating such wastes in the productive chain, instead of storing them in piles.

In this study, the cyclonic static microbubble flotation column (FCSMC) was investigated for fluorite beneficiation. The structure and principle of the specially designed column are described. Fluorite samples from the tungsten separation tailings of the Shizhuyuan Mine, Chenzhou, Hunan Province, P.R. China, were tested using a small-scale continuous flotation test unit, and concentrates with a fluorite grade higher than 98% were obtained. One rougher and three cleaner stages in the FCSMC achieved the same separation performance as one rougher and eight cleaners in conventional flotation cells. This greatly simplified the flotation circuit and reduced operating costs.

A study on fauna distribution and abundance is being conducted in the Giona Mountain, in central Greece, area of bauxite mining. The specific aims of the study are: a) to estimate and map the distribution of mammals, and especially of the Balkan chamois, b) to estimate and map the distribution and abundance of breeding birds, c) to count the bird species using the area during spring and autumn migration and winter, d) to update the list of mammal and bird species of the mountain, with emphasis on rare and endangered ones, according to 79/409, 92/43 EU Directives and other relevant conventions, e) to compare the bauxite mining areas and species distribution and assess the possible overlap and compatibility of mining activities - species conservation, f) to assess the possible habitat loss due to planned mining activities. All estimations of mammal species distribution and abundance are being carried out by fieldwork using spotlight during the night along selected routes. Especially for chamois, line transects and vantage points with the aid of telescopes and binoculars are being used. Birds are being counted with the point count method in randomly selected plots distributed in all available habitat types and altitudes. The species distribution and mining areas will appear on thematic maps with the aid of a geographical information system (GIS). Finally, solutions for environmentally compatible mining activity in the area will be proposed.

The continuously increasing rate of the non-renewable raw material consumption together with the production of immense volumes of solid wastes and effluents is one of the main characteristics of our modern society. This leads to an unconditional necessity to reduce the raw material and energy consumption and to recycle the used materials and products. Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) constitutes a promising tool in this direction. LCA is a methodology, whose main purpose is the objective calculation and analysis of the environmental burdens of products, processes and activities as well as the estimation of the possibilities to perform environmental improvements in combination with the rational use of raw materials and energy. The purpose of this paper is to present the life cycle of marble and granite from the quarrying to the processing stage, including the transportation between the quarry and the processing plant, by quantifying the environmental impacts that derive from each stage and the evaluation of their potential effects to the environment and to human health.

INTRODUCTION East Side Access (ESA) Contract CQ028 is located in the New York City Borough of Queens. The contract involves construction of a 230-meter (760-foot) long open-cut excavation with a permanent deck supporting Amtrak yard tracks over a semi-circular TBM launch wall on the east end, and the 36.5-meter (120-foot) long Northern Blvd. Crossing on the west end. The Northern Boulevard Crossing will be mined under an existing New York City Transit (NYCT) five-track subway tunnel; Northern Boulevard, a heavily traveled five-lane truck route; and an existing NYCT three-track elevated line; connecting to an existing open-cut shaft adjacent to the existing 63rd Street Tunnel bellmouth. When completed, Contract CQ028 will provide access for future Manhattan and Queens tunnel contracts. The footprint of the open-cut was determined by the geometric requirements of the future Plaza Interlocking facility to be constructed within in another future ESA contract. See Figure 1. This paper discusses design risk mitigations for the key elements of the contract, namely the Northern Blvd. Crossing and the semi-circular TBM Launch Wall. PROJECT OVERVIEW The Metropolitan Transportation Authority Capital Construction Company—East Side Access Project for the Long Island Rail Road will provide Long Island commuters with direct access to Manhattan’s East Side via a new rail line between the Harold Interlocking in Queens and Grand Central Terminal in Manhattan. The project connects the unused lower level of the existing tunnel under the East River at 63rd Street to new connecting tunnels in Queens and Manhattan. Contract CQ028 Scope and Construction Schedule This contract consists of the excavation of an open-cut from the east side of Northern Boulevard, through an existing MTA-owned rail yard and into the western limits of Amtrak’s Sunnyside Yard. INTRODUCTION The Metropolitan Expressway Central Circular Route with a total length of approximately 47 km is located outside the Inner Circular Route of Tokyo (at a radius of approximately 8 km from the city center). Sections with a length of approximately26 km, slightly less than 60% of the total length, on the east and north sides are in ser-vice. Completing the Central Circular Route (Figure 1) is expected to enable through traffic concentrated at the city center to get around, and to form a well balanced trans-port network, which will alleviate traffic congestion considerably. The Central Circular Shinjuku Route, a section with a length of approximately 11 km on the west side, is now being constructed at a fast pace. The route is being built mainly by the shield tunneling method to carry out work smoothly under a trunk highway carrying heavy traffic and to reduce adverse effects of tunneling work on residents in the neighborhood. Shield tunnels have recently been becoming longer and deeper, and no secondary linings have been used in an increasing number of cases because of the over-crowding of cities or the reduction of budgets for public works. Economical, durable and high-quality segments have been required for linings of shield tunnels. Segments are made of concrete, steel, cast iron or combination thereof. Concrete segments are generally used in shield tunnels of medium to large diameter. Concrete segments are highly durable and resistant to compression, so they are highly resistant to earth pres-sure, water pressure and jack thrust. They are, however, heavy and have low tensile strength, so they are brittle and their corners are likely to spall. Concrete segments should therefore be handled carefully.[1] The authors have developed a steel fiber reinforced highly flowable concrete segment (referred as SFRC segment) that overcomes the weaknesses of concrete segments[2] to construct economical, durable and high-quality linings. SFRC segments have been applied to outbound sections SJ51 through SJ53 of the Central Circular Shinjuku Route. Unlike conventional concrete segments (referred as conventional RC segments), SFRC segments are made of steel fiber reinforced self-compacting highly flowable concrete. SFRC segments require less reinforcing bars than conventional RC segments because steel fibers are expected to work as reinforcements. As global energy demands increase, there will be a critical need to employ fuels that have minimal environmental impacts. While hydrogen is considered the ultimate fuel for that purpose, hydrocarbon based fuels will be in use for a considerable time and will probably be the first major source of hydrogen for next generation power systems. The best fuel for this transition will be natural gas because of the high hydrogen to carbon ratio. Natural gas hydrates have the potential to meet the global energy needs for the foreseeable future. The amount of energy stored in natural gas hydrates is significantly more than that of all the other fossil fuels combined. However, most proposed techniques for recovering the natural gas from the hydrate require too much energy input, raise safety concerns or can only recover a fraction of the gas. This paper discusses the technical feasibility of a novel method of gas production in hydrate reservoirs. The method is an in-situ process that creates a point heat source in the hydrate formation. This method not only significantly reduces the energy input, but also has the potential to sequester as much or more CO2 than would be produced from combustion of the natural gas produced, thus making this in-situ methane production technique virtually carbon neutral. Simulations using FEMLAB™ show that the method offers an energy efficient and environmentally friendly way to produce natural gas from hydrate reservoirs. Preliminary results indicate that it is possible to have an energy efficiency of nearly 90% for land based reservoirs for hydrate loadings of 20%. The simulation results also suggest that alternatives to a point source can be employed which may improve the process efficiency.

Land use and access to land are limiting factors in economic development in the Western region of Ghana. Mining uses land during operations and then rehabilitates the land as part of ongoing operations and closure. Golden Star Resources Limited (GSR) aims to contribute to the sustainability of the local economy during its operations and then post-closure. Following a series of alternative livelihood initiatives, GSR reviewed the success of these programs and decided to focus on an oil palm project that uses out-growers to reach the local economy. The project started using small holdings that were individually managed. However, the ongoing effects were limited. Following a review of the options, the Golden Star Oil Palm Project was started using land committed to the pro-gram by the Bogoso Mine. The initial program covered 275 ha with over 40,000 trees with 300 people involved in the development. The Traditional Authorities have committed additional lands to the project to a planned total area of 18,000 ha.

The link between artificial ground freezing and the mining industry stretches back more than 140 years, and across an ocean. Patented by the German scientist F.H. Poetsch in 1863, the technique is reported to have first been used circa 1862 in the coal mining valleys of South Wales. In the United States, the first ground freezing application, to a depth of 30 m (100 ft), occurred in 1888 for the Chapin Mine Co. in Iron Mountain, MO. In England in 1901, the Poetsch method was used for the first time to successfully sink two shafts through 24 to 27 m (80 to 90 ft) of wet sand and boulder clay at the Washington Glebe Colliery, near Sunderland. British mining engineer T.H. Cockin, in his 1905 Class-Book of Practical Coal-Mining, noted that, ?This method of sinking through thick beds of very wet quicksand has met with great success; it is one of the recognized methods of sinking on the Continent.? Mine shaft freezing soon became relatively common in Europe where the project could bear the cost of a major refrigeration plant construction. However, it was not until 1952 that the second North American ground freezing project was completed to facilitate the sinking of a 4.5-m- (15-ft-) diameter, 233-m- (765-ft-) deep shaft at a Potash Company of America (PCA) mine in Carlsbad, NM. Nowadays, ground freezing is used worldwide for both mining and civil applications. In small mine shafts of 3 to 6 m (10 to 20 ft) in diameter, excavations have been carried out to depths of more than 820 m (2,700 ft) within the protection of unbraced or unlined frozen walls. In fact, for deep mines, no better method has yet been established for sinking production shafts through deep, water-bearing ground. Major deposits of coal, potash and salt would still be inaccessible if not for artificial ground freezing. There are several advantages of ground freezing unique to the construction of shafts. Proper instrumentation can provide complete assurance of the integrity of the freeze to full depth prior to excavation. The frozen wall allows construction to be scheduled without evaluating the in-shaft time necessary to probe ahead, place additional sup-ports or deal with ground water. The freeze can be implemented perfectly through the soil/rock interface, which is often the most difficult geology in which to create a ground water cutoff by other methods. Montana Tech has embarked on a coordinated series of studies to delineate the characteristics of the Berkeley Pitlake containing over 36 billion gallons of acidic, metal-contaminated water formed after the cessation of open-pit copper mining in Butte, Montana, USA. The objectives of the overall series of studies are to summarize presently available information and to generate new and needed information to formulate a conceptual environmental model for the pitlake and to provide characterization data for the development of advanced treatment technologies. In this presentation, the chemistry of the Berkeley Pitlake water is partially reviewed. It is known that the pitlake consists of two distinct layers of water referred to as surface and deep water. Samples of deep water were collected and placed in a 12-ft high and 6-inch diameter column and exposed to different wavelengths of UV radiation as well as atmospheric conditions. Measurements of pH, redox potential (EH), dissolved O2, turbidity, conductivity, temperature, and elemental composition show that the water reacts differently and indicates that the diurnal effects of sunlight likely play a major non-biological role in its chemistry. Resulting technology could be useful for developing an alternative to treating acid-rock drainage.

Making progress on sustainable development will require greater attention to the management of materials produced from mine exploration through use to reuse, recovery and recycling. Material stewardship is a concept that embodies the range of activities required for optimal and appropriate use of minerals and metals in society. The following paper provides an overview of some recent initiatives that promote the stewardship of minerals and metals in society. The initiatives described are being conducted by organisations ? the International Zinc Association, the Canadian Copper & Brass Development Association and the International Council on Mining & Metals. These associations illustrate stewardship activities at three different levels: - an international association representing companies that produce a range of minerals and metals; - an international commodity association; and - a regional association. For each initiative, information is presented on its development, scope and outlook. This paper draws heavily from work of the associations but the viewpoints are the responsibility of the authors.

The timing was right for SME to celebrate its 50th anniversary in February as a member society of AIME. The mining industry is in the midst of a commodities boom that appears to have legs. Not only is the demand for metals, construction materials and the like increasing in developing nations, but developed nations have also seen the demand for those materials increase at impressive rates. So, in addition to networking and seeing old friends, attendees at the SME Annual Meeting and Exhibit in Denver, CO. Feb. 25-28, had several reasons to enjoy the week — a healthy industry and their society’s landmark anniversary. This annual meeting was held jointly with the Colorado Mining Association’s (CMA) 109th National Western Mining Conference.

Introduction The mining industry has long been associated with a high incidence of low back disorders and pain (Klein et al. 1984, Leigh and Sheetz 1989, Brinckmann et al. 1998). It is believed that the higher incidence of these injuries among miners is the result of high exposures to postural demands, heavy manual work, and exposure to whole-body vibration (WBV). Recent work has indicated that miners involved with heavy lifting (especially in restricted spaces or on uneven ground) or who have been exposed to whole-body vibration in undamped seats experience noticeable changes in their spines that are consistent with degeneration of the intervetebral discs of the spine (Brinckmann et al. 1998). As will be described shortly, there is mounting evidence that disc degeneration plays a large role in the development of low back pain, particularly chronic back pain. Until fairly recently, medical doctors generally assumed that back pain was the result of muscle strain, ligament pain, or so-called “trigger points” (Bogduk, 1997). However, research supporting these mechanisms of pain has been very scant. When subjected to scientific scrutiny, none of these mechanisms has been shown to relate to back pain in a convincing manner. On the other hand, there are three mechanisms that have been shown to be highly associated with back pain in controlled scientific studies: sacroiliac pain (present in 13% of back pain sufferers) (Maigne et al. 1996), facet joint pain (present in 15 % of back pain sufferers) (Schwarzer et al 1994), and disc disruption and degeneration (present in 39% of chronic back pain sufferers) (Moneta et al. 1994). The latter mechanism, which bears the highest relationship to back pain that has been objectively demonstrated, will be the focus of this section. Scientists now believe they have a good idea how back pain may develop in cases involving disc disruption and degeneration (Bogduk 1997). As the spine experiences loading during lifting tasks or whole body vibration, the first structure to fail is called the vertebral endplate, which is a structure that attaches the disc of the spine to the vertebral body (Figure 1). The endplate typically experiences a fracture, which the body will attempt to heal by means of scar tissue. Unfortunately, this scar tissue impedes the flow of nutrition to the disc itself (discs are dependent on nutrition from the vertebral bones), and if the supply is reduced sufficiently, the disc will start to degenerate. As this degeneration process proceeds, fissures or tears in the fibers of the disc start to develop. If any of these tears is a grade 3 fissure (Figure 2), an inflammatory response occurs in the disc, which will lead to the well-known sensation of low back pain (Peng 2006).

Despite near-record commodity prices, the mining industry continues to search for ways to maintain profits in these times of steadily increasing energy prices and steadily decreasing grades. The pressure is still on today’s miners to continuously improve their operations because they know that one day prices too will drop. Some, however, have seized the opportunity to employ systematic methods to reduce costs and increase the efficiency of their workforce and equipment. As a result, closer attention is being paid to scheduling and the value that could be added by defining the extraction sequence that maximizes the net present value [NPV] of a project. This paper will discuss the challenges faced by Newmont Mining Corporation [Newmont] at its operations and the application of sophisticated software tools and methods in its search of solutions to this problem.

The East Bay Municipal Utility District’s Claremont Tunnel is an 18,000-foot long water tunnel that crosses the Hayward Fault zone near Oakland, California. It was originally completed in 1929. This project involved the construction of a bypass tunnel through the fault zone, including an enlarged vault section designed to accommodate up to 8.5 feet of horizontal offset. Ground conditions encountered included sheared and crushed serpentinite and clayey fault gouge, and presented specific challenges for construction. A special excavation and support sequence used concrete-backfilled side drifts as foundations for the vault steel sets. It also allowed for a 20-foot-wide top heading and bench excavation in soft and squeezing ground conditions.
