Software for coal blending has gained a lot of recent attention as micro-computer programs have come on the market. Some of this software is appropriate and some is not. This paper looks at the types of models being used and points out the strengths and weaknesses of each. Recommendations are then made concerning the level of detail required for these programs, relating this concern to the various ways in which coal companies are using these programs. A checklist of company requirements for these programs and available pro-gram-features provides an aid in matching the program to the company.

Process improvement is probably the most widespread objective of mineral process plant operators in the late 1980's. An important part of such improvements is dynamic optimization which involves reacting to inevitable plant disturbances in such a way that productivity is maximized at every instant of time. This paper describes the way in which mathematical models can be and have been used in dynamic optimization. Both off-line and on-line model applications are described.

A big issue in crushing and grinding operations in raw materials handling is high energy consumption and low breakage effectiveness. According to the Legendre [7], only 10% of energy input is directly consumed on the feed material breakage, while the remaining portion is dissipated in the form of heat and noise [8]. In the industry of limestone powder production, the grinding operations constitute integral part of technological circuits, and the energy consumption in operations of industrial comminution consume as high as 2% of world energy [14]. High-pressure grinding is the technology with proved energy benefits both in ore processing circuits and in limestone grinding. The promising results concerned mostly the achieved energy savings and good results of material breakage were achieved and demonstrated in numerous investigations [1,3,12]. However, it appears that a proper selection of operational parameters of the press devise, determination the feed material characteristics and adjustment of process course san be of a key-significance in improving an effectiveness the HPGR operation. Operational parameters of devices and process course should be verified towards the characteristics of the feed material, which mainly applies to the particle size and shape of the feed material and its moisture, and also mineralization in case of ores [2,4,9]. There are various investigations concerning an impact of the operational pressing force on comminution results which mostly refer to the determination of energy consumption and crushing ratio [5,6,10,13]. Investigations on the moisture content are less common, however their results suggest that, in general, the HPGR feed with higher moisture shows the tendency to higher comminution intensity, while the energy consumption increases together with increasing of feed material moisture. Investigations on olivine sand feed [11] showed that crushing ratio decreases for higher moisture, especially when the material is crushed at higher pressing force. HPGR devices, however, shouldn’t be regarded as a unique and perfect solution for comminution of each type of material. But they indeed may bring technological and economic benefits, comparing to conventional crushing and grinding machines, resulting in more favourable breakage of material particles and lower consumption of energy per unit mass of processed feed material.

Bleeder entries are critically important to longwall mining for the moving of supplies, personnel, and the dilution of mine air contaminants. By design, these entries must stay open for many years for ventilation. Standing supports in moderate cover bleeder entries were observed, numerically modeled, and instrumented by researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). The measurements of the installed borehole pressure cells (BPCs), standing support load cells and convergence meters, and roof extensometers are presented in this paper in addition to the numerical modeling results and visual observations made by the NIOSH researchers in the bleeder entries. The results include the effects of multiple panels being extracted in close proximity to the instrumented site as well as over one and a half years of aging. As expected, standing supports closer to the longwall gob showed the greatest load and convergence. The roof sag appeared generally independent of the proximity to the longwall gob. The BPC readings were driven by both the proximity to the gob and the depth into the pillar. The results of this study demonstrated that the entry roof can respond independently of the pillar and standing support loading. In addition, the rear abutment stress experienced by this bleeder entry design was minimal. The closer the mine development, pillar, or supports are to the gob, the greater the applied load due to rear abutment stress.

The latest estimates compiled by the Society of Exploration Geophysicists again indicate a moderate increase in mining geophysical activity in 1980 over the 1979 level. While North American activity remained at above the 1979 level, a considerable increase in mining geophysics was reported in South America, Australia, and the Far East. The total worldwide expenditures for mining geophysics were reported to be $53.7 million in 1980, compared to $44.4 million in 1979, and $31.6 million in 1978. During 1980, approximately 2% of all dollars spent on geophysics were attributed to mining geophysical activities; this percentage has remained relatively constant in recent years. Airborne surveys accounted for 51% of the total worldwide mining geophysical expenditure, 43% was spent for land surveys, and 6% for borehole surveys. Within the US, the breakdown of expenditures for land surveys was 60% for elec¬trical methods, 23% for gravity and magnetic methods, and 17% for seismic techniques. Electrical techniques remain the primary exploration tool for US mining geophysicists. Electrical Methods With inductive or electromagnetic (EM) techniques, significant developments were achieved in both frequency-domain and time-domain systems. Work continued on increasing the signal level on most time-domain (TEM) methods, to increase the exploration depth. The Crone group increased the power of its Pulse ElectroMagnetic system (PEM) to a 20-amp transmitter-loop capability. The GEOEX group is modifying the SIROTEM II system to obtain larger transmitter amperage from a portable motor generator. Geonics developed a new digital recording system (data logger) for its EM-37 system. This development should increase the productivity of EM-37 crews. A new ground, frequency-domain EM system was developed by the Scintrex group. This novel Genie system does not require a wire link between the receiver and transmitter. Because an amplitude-ratio is measured, the Genie data are reported to be relatively insensitive to coil orientation and distance errors. This new technique does not need extensive line-cutting or accurate station-chaining and would appear to be a good reconnaissance instrument. Scintrex also began marketing the new IPR-11 induced polarization spectral receiver. This receiver is microprocessor controlled, and can output to a cassette tape and record 10 windows of secondary voltage decay simultaneously from up to six receiver dipoles. The Phoenix group's new 100 kW induced polarization/resistivity (IP/R) transmitter began tests using their IPV-3 multifrequency, multichannel receiver. While this unit was primarily developed for "oilfield" IP exploration research, it has obvious application to "deep" mineral exploration. The Phoenix group also developed a new remote-reference, real-time magneto-telluric (MT) device in 1981. This five-component MT sys¬tem has a frequency range from 0.0005-384 Hz. Helicopter-borne electromagnetic (HEM) developments also continued in 1981. The mining in¬dustry increased its use of the new Geonics EM-33-3 multifrequency, multicoil instrument. In 1981, the Dighem group developed software for estimating magnetite as a mapping parameter from its HEM system. Dighem's work is said to complement airborne magnetic intensity surveys, since the HEM estimate is independent of remanent magnetism and magnetic latitude effects. Gravity and Magnetic Methods Probably one of the most innovative techniques in geophysics in 1981 was the use of airborne gravity surveys for both mining and petroleum exploration. The Carson group is using a modified, shipborne LaCoste-Romberg platform in helicopters. Data accuracies to 0.5 milligal have been achieved by flying gridded surveys. Although this airborne method is expensive-up to $186/ km ($300/line-mile)-the geophysical community has been excited by initial results. On the ground, the portable proton-precession magnetometers are becoming sophisticated. Both GeoMetrics and EDA recently introduced field magnetometers having data storage and processing capabilities. This development should greatly increase the productivity of ground-magnetic surveys. Seismic Methods Development of high-resolution seismic techniques continued in 1981. These techniques have primarily been directed toward coal studies for fault detection. OYO Instruments introduced their McSEIS-1500 seismic data acquisition system in 1981. This device contains a 24-channel recording capability, with digital output to 256-kbyte floppy disks. The high-speed data transfer using the disk media is considered a desirable feature. Borehole Methods The general decrease in uranium exploration, where borehole logging is extensively used, probbly led to the overall decline of geophysical logging activity in the minerals industry. However, a number of new sondes and logging systems were introduced in 1981: • Mount Sopris recently introduced their Series III logging system. This microprocessor-controlled unit records up to four channels of data on nine-track or cassette magnetic tape. The logging package is relatively light-weight, so helicopter transport to mountainous or roadless exploration sites is possible. (Both the Edcon and Woodware-Clyde consulting groups offer "slinging" capabilities for their Mount Sopris units.) Mount Sopris is continuing work on their 500-mm-diam (2¬in-diam) spectral gamma-ray sonde. This tool is expected to be available soon. • Owl Technical "slim-downed" its successful digital deviation probe to 380-mm (1.5-in) outside diameter. This new sonde will also measure inclinations up to 80° from the vertical, as compared with its older instrument that could measure inclinations to 30°. • A magnetic susceptibility sonde was introduced in the US by the OYO Instruments group. This Kappalog sonde contains two aircored coils for measurements slightly affected by thermal changes within the borehole. INTRODUCTION A trend which is obvious in the United Kingdom and is thought to be evident in other parts of the Western world is the disproportionate rise in the cost of tunnel mining labour compared with other tunnel cost increases. This disproportionate increase in labour costs has been accompanied by, and may be the result of, a shortage of skilled working labour. To combat this problem there has been a steady increase in the use of machines for excavation and for the erection of tunnel linings to keep the amount of skilled labour working below ground to a minimum. The typical tunnelling cycle, where the ground needs continuous support can be excavation, temporary support, temporary lining, grouting and permanent lining. It is obviously an advantage to combine as many of these operations as possible and carry out as much as possible by machine. Machines have been developed which will, either alone or used in combination with a shield, excavate and, when necessary, temporarily support the excavation. If a segmental lining is used, it can be so designed that it will form the permanent lining and reduce the cycle time and skilled labour requirement to a minimum. In cases in which the ground can be cut accurately to a smooth profile and will stand without support for a sufficient time, the lining can be expanded against the ground and the necessity of grouting eliminated. In cases in which ground will not stand without support, the usual method is to use a bolted lining and to grout behind it preferably as the shield is shoved forward. Sustaining the region?s mobility needs, achieving projected economic growth, and maintain Midtown Manhattan as a center of regional, national and global importance has led to continued investment in commuter rail and transit infrastructure in New York City and resulted in design and construction of large underground caverns. The current plans for stations in Manhattan include New York Penn Station Expansion (NYPSE) caverns for Trans Hudson Express (THE) Tunnel Project for New Jersey Transit (NJ Transit) and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ), Metropolitan Transportation Authority Capital Construction Long Island Railroad (MTACC/LIRR) twin caverns for East Side Access (ESA) Project, and station caverns of the No. 7 Line Subway Extension Project and Second Avenue Subway Project for Metropolitan Transportation Authority Capital Construction/New York City Transit (MTACC/NYCT). This paper provides a general overview of these large caverns now in design or construction in Manhattan, the area?s geologic setting, the geotechnical factors considered and approaches commonly applied for cavern design.

Modern concrete technology emphasizes the basic qualities required of an acceptable aggregate: it must be clean, sound, homogeneous, and of a size gradation resulting in a concrete of the desired physical qualities at a minimum cost. In the case of coarse aggregates, crushing, scrubbing, and screening will usually provide the required material, although beneficiation is often necessary in order to eliminate unsound or deleterious fractions. Beneficiation is also applicable to fine aggregates,( but the processes most often employed are washing, classification, and dewatering.

The industrial practice of froth flotation for upgrading the quality of fine coal is a relatively complex, expensive, and inefficient process when compared to the coarse- and intermediate-size coal cleaning circuits. The differences in cost and process efficiency can be attributed mainly to the lower equipment throughput, the added cost of flotation reagents, and the fact that flotation is typically a manually operated process susceptible to fluctuating feed characteristics that influence the overall operating efficiency. The emphasis in recent years has been on improving the flotation process efficiency and lowering the cost per clean ton. This has been achieved by larger flotation cell designs, implementation of flotation reagent evaluation programs, and improved process instrumentation and control. These developments are reviewed along with other current coal flotation practices.

There is much interest in the automation of entire comminution circuits, At the present technological level it is possible to automate a circuit but to date it has not been done, To successfully automate a circuit, a number of problems must be solved. Not all of them are engineering problems. The purpose of this paper is to discuss some of these problems, as certain the implications of these problems and indicate solutions to them. In this paper the term "automation" is used loosely but in the popular sense. Namely, that a plant is automated if a computer is used to control the basic flow of the materials as well as setting the critical parameters in the process. Specifically, the discussion will concern itself with the control of comminution circuits from the dumping of the ore into the primary crusher until the final interface between the comminution circuit and say, the flotation mill in the case of a sulfide ore.

The favorable economics of conveyor based haulage, especially in moving large volumes. has long been acknowledged. This has given impetus to significant developments over the last two decades in conveying systems and equipment. Such developments have resulted in improved equipment and system reliability, versatility and mobility. The present writing presents conveyor systems and their variations. Long overland conveyors of various profile and plan layout are considered along with various typical support systems. This includes discussion of horizontally curving, two-way and booster driven conveyors. High Angle Conveyors-[HACs] are reviewed, citing in-pit as well as plant application. Finally, several important advances in idler and in pulley design are presented.

This paper is an update of the activities of the U.S. Bureau of Mines, other government agencies, and the automotive and truck industry concerning diesel emission control. Enacted and proposed regulations from the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) and developments in diesel emission control are presented in terms of their impact on underground coal, metal, and nonmetal mines. Mine air quality regulations proposed by MSHA may require the underground mining industry to comply with new standards. Some mines may be required to take additional actions to meet new diesel particulate and lower nitrogen dioxide exposure standards; however, the mining industry is in a position to benefit from emission controls developed for the on-highway diesel engine market. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has enacted regulations to reduce emissions from on-highway diesel trucks and buses. Engine manufacturers have responded by developing cleaner burning engines. Fuel producers have responded by providing cleaner burning reformulated diesel fuel, and exhaust aftertreatment devices have been developed to provide additional emissions reductions. Bureau research and development projects seek to determine the advantages of using modern engines and fuels, and to evaluate the efficacy of new exhaust control devices on mining machines. It appears that the diesel engine will continue to be a practical power source for use in confined environments because no other available power source is as mobile and efficient.

Investment in mining and related process facilities will be more costly and complex in the 1980s than ever before. Interest rates and inflation are soaring; regulations are expanding; and in order to achieve economies of scale, plant facilities and mines are getting larger. As the pace quickens, the time/cost circuit closes around the resource owner or developer. Larger modern projects cost more money and take more time to build. The longer it takes to bring a project onstream, the more it costs in interest, escalation, and lost production. One solution to the time/cost squeeze is to take advantage of systems developed by major contractors serving the mining industry. These contractors have been serving clients in planning and executing large and small projects for many years. They have developed systems which, if applied at an early point in the project's life, can be a significant benefit in development of mineral resources. The systems involve performance of feasibility studies, economic evaluations, and the project installation itself. First the Feasibility Study Feasibility studies can minimize risk through systematic evaluations while progressing toward the ultimate objective-an operating plant. Normally, studies are initiated with a minimum amount of specific information and a maximum number of as¬sumptions. Through the course of the study program, assumptions are continuously confirmed, refined, or rejected by facts until a sound basis for decision is available. High on the list of cost effective tools for evaluation is the use of a geostatistically derived sampling program that provides a highly accurate ore reserve estimate for economic evaluation. When a predetermined sample of data from the drilling program and bench-scale or pilot-plant tests are received, a detailed feasibility study may be started. The long and often undefined period in the post-mining phase challenges geo-monitoring with its various responsibilities, like the detection of environmental changes, ground movements and water management. Modern methods of geo- and environmental monitoring observe numerous aspects using active and passive sensors with multispectral, hyperspectral and microwave sensors, with diverse spatial dimensions and spatiotemporal resolutions from satellites, Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), in-situ sensors. Data integration, together with on-site knowledge and experience, provides the basis for comprehensive modeling, which improves the understanding of the environmental changes and their related causes, which is an essential step for public acceptance. In this paper, we aim to give a brief overview of various geo- and environmental monitoring methods.

Though the use of continuous mining machines consolidated the operations of cutting, drilling, blasting, and loading in one machine that would theoretically provide uninterrupted production, it was soon realized that the face haulage and roof support operations remained as major impediments to continuous production. The ability to provide not only continuous cutting and loading, but also continuous haulage and roof support (see Fig. I), was the basis for the introduction of mechanized longwall systems in this country from Europe in 1951. The early systems employed friction props for roof support, but were to become obsolete shortly after introduction of the first hydraulically powered, self-advancing supports in 1960. Since then, use of the longwall technique has grown to the point where it is currently providing more than 5% of the annual output of underground coal mines in the United States. The shortwall system had its origin in Australia, but was first introduced into this country in 1962 following the development of powered roof supports. It, too, provides for continuous cutting, loading, and roof support (see Fig. 2), but has not experienced the widespread popularity of longwall due to its inherent inability to easily provide for continuous haulage. While there are in the neighborhood of 100 longwall systems currently in operation in this country, there are only a handful of short- wall operations providing production of slightly more than 907 184.7 t/a (1,000,000 stpy) Both of these systems provide uninterrupted roof support for face operations by means of hydraulically powered steel roof supports. In each case, the coal removal consists of open-end cuts made from the narrow end of a large rectangular pillar (panel) which has been blocked out by continuous miners developing entries around its perimeter. However, this is the extent of the similarities between the two systems. It is hoped [ ] that the information presented in this chapter will enable the reader to better understand the two mechanical systems and the mining concepts involved in their employment.

Surface mining refers to the process of removing the material (over- burden) overlying a coal seam and exposing the coal so that it can be loaded out and conveyed by trucks or other methods to the preparation plant or other facility. Surface mining has not always been important in the coal industry. In the early 1900s, almost all of the coal mined in the United States was mined by underground methods. In 1900, about 192 Mt (212 million st) of bituminous coal were mined and less than 1% was mined by surface methods. The development and use of larger equipment has allowed surface mining to gain prominence throughout the years. Table 1 shows the total production of coal by mining method in the United States for ten-year periods since 1920 and indicates the growth of surface-mined coal production. Surface mining will undoubtedly continue to account for a large percentage of the coal production in the US for many years because: 1) The capacity of surface mining excavators has continued to increase. Today, mining companies are using shovels (see Fig. 1) which are able to move up to 137.6 m3 (180 cu yd) in each bite and draglines (see Fig. 2) which move up to 168.2 m3 (220 cu yd) in each bucketful. 2) Increasing tonnage from the thick western coal seams is being produced by surface mining methods. 3) Surface mining has normally had lower costs and a better safety record than underground mining; 4) Surface mining normally recovers a- much higher percentage of the coal reserve than can be recovered by underground mining. 5) Some coal measures can best be extracted by surface mining [ ] methods because of geologic reasons such as the nature of the roof or bottom, thickness of the seam, multiple bedding, etc.

The design of an underground mining operation requires the integration of transportation, ventilation, ground control, and mining methods to form a system which provides the highest possible degree of safety for mine personnel; the lowest cost per ton of product; the most suitable quality of final product, considering its intended use; the maximum percent recovery of the reserve, consistent with cost and subsidence rights; and the minimum disturbance to the environment. The selection of mining method is generally the controlling factor in overall mine design. Some important considerations in the choice of mining method are : 1) Depth of cover over the coal seam. 2) Strength and thickness of rock strata in the overburden. 3) Characteristics of the coal seam, including thickness, nature and location of impurities or irregularities, dip (or pitch), nature and direction of cleavage, hardness, and structural strength of the coal. 4) Nature and strength of the immediate roof (top) over the coal seam. 5) Nature and strength of the floor (bottom) under the coal seam. 6) Presence and amount of explosive gas (methane). 7) Quantity of water likely to be encountered in the mining operation. 8) Any previous or concurrent mining in seams above or below the coal seam to be worked. 9) Any restrictions on recovery required for subsidence control. Topographical and geological reports and maps of the area are usually available from state and federal geological surveys, and contain excellent general information to guide more detailed investigations. Exploratory drilling, and the plotting and analysis of the information thus obtained, are essential steps in any development program, and aid in the correlation and evaluation of information gained by other means. Other good sources of information are operating coal mines that may be in the same seam in nearby properties. Such mines may indicate in advance much about roof control, drainage, ventilation, and other mining problems.
