Since 2019, approximately two dozen international battery recycling companies have been operating at the commercial or pilot scale [1]. However, current process capacity does not exceed 100,000 tons of end-of-life (EOL) lithium-ion batteries (LIB) per year, and the current recycling rate is only about 5% in North America [2-3]. Recycling metals from EOL LIBs is not only essential to waste minimization and environmental stewardship, but also a source of critical materials, which can contribute towards supply chain stabilization. LIB recycling can be roughly divided into three categories: direct recycling, pyrometallurgy, and hydrometallurgy. Direct recycling seeks to retain as much of the manufactured effort with minimum chemical processing [4]. The evolution of battery designs and chemical compositions are challenges to this approach [5-6]. Pyrometallurgical processes are robust and flexible allowing a broad spectrum of batteries with minimum pre-processing requirements. Some of the matrix issues are solved through combustion of some constituents. Smelting is strongly tied to fossil energy and air emissions are a concern. In addition, pyrometallurgical processes are not stand alone, as hydrometallurgical refining normally required to separate and recover the metals of interest (Co, Ni, and Cu) from the produced alloy and Li from the slag [7]. Hydrometallurgical processes can be highly selective and efficient in recovering high purity materials [8]. In general, hydrometallurgical processes are considered cleaner and less costly than high temperature processes [4,9-10]. Extensive chemical consumption and waste generation significantly increase the operating costs and overall environmental impact of the hydrometallurgical processes [11]. Leaching of metals from LIBs is dominated by the mixture of sulfuric acid (1 to 4 M H2SO4) and hydrogen peroxide (1 to 15 wt.% H2O2) [10]. Although organic acids have been tested as lower environmental impact alternatives, the reported pulp density operations are low < 60 g/L [10-11]. For the H2SO4/H2O2 leachates, high leaching efficiencies >90% are reported for Co, Ni, Mn, and Li from cathode materials at temperatures over 40 ⁰C and pulp densities between 30 to 200 g/L [9-10]. H2O2 acts as reducing agent to convert Co+3 and Mn+4 into their soluble forms, Co+2 and Mn+2 [12]. Despite the claims of H2O2 being a clean reducing agent [13], production of H2O2 has significant environmental impacts as determined by life-cycle analyses [13-14]. Moreover, the costs and risks associated with H2O2 transportation and storage cannot be ignored [15].

The area described in this paper lies along the inner margin of the Coastal&apos; Plain in Twiggs County, near the exact center of the State of Georgia. Twiggs is one of four counties which produces approximately 75 per cent of the nationals output of kaolin used in the paper trade. In this vicinity the land surface is characterized by coastal plain hills with elevations ranging from about 250 feet, above mean sea level in the flood plain of: the Ocmulgee River to about 550 feet above mean sea level on the hill tops. Surface drainage in the area is southwestward to the Ocmulgee River, the tributaries of which have dissected the land surface exposing thick sections of the upper parts of the hills of Eocene (Ocala Limestone and Barnwell formation) limestone, sand, marl and clay, and in the lower parts of the hills Cretaceous (Tuscaloosa Formation) kaolin, kaolinitic clay, sandy clay, sand and, gravel. The contact between these two principal groups of geologic units is rather easil distinguished as the top of the kaolinitic beds. It is described in detail and mapped in published geologic reports for the area (LaMoreaux, 1946).

Bioleaching has an increasingly important place among available mining technologies as biological processes have emerged as alternatives for metal recovery, especially for metals like gold and copper. An important disadvantage of bioleaching is the slow reaction rates, with microbial attack times often lasting weeks. Therefore, applicable research is required to improve these rates. From previous research, copper bioleaching has been divided into two specific regimes: (1) surface reaction controlling step and (2) mix of surface reaction and diffusion controlling steps. The presented model, which includes the effects of both these regimes, predicted the results of copper bioleaching recovery with good accuracy.

The present study introduces a new approach to understand the copper dissolution rate and to find an adapted mathematical statement for particle shrinkage rate in a batch bioleaching system. Four size classes of a chalcopyrite concentrate, namely [D1 : (−54 + 44)μm, D2 : (−44 + 38)μm, D3 : (−38 + 25)μm and D4 : (−25)μm], were used in the batch bioleaching tests by applying a mixed culture of moderately thermophilic microorganisms. The pulp density and temperature were 8 (%w/v) and 50 °C, respectively. Findings delineated that the bioleaching time can be divided into two specific time intervals: first, the surface reactions were the prevailing controlling step; second, the prevailing mechanism was diffusion through the product layer, whereas the overall rate of the process may be related to both through a Q factor using a mixed model. A mathematical model was developed based on particle size distribution (PSD) and a kinetic model. Experimental validation of the mixed model was accomplished by the representative sample with d80 = 54 microns. Results showed that the PSD of the specific sample was in good agreement with Rosin–Rammler function. Besides, the simulation result of the conversion fraction had the best conformity with the experimental data (with a maximum error of approximately 7%). This paper should be considered as an initial part of a larger, global model for chalcopyrite concentrate bioleaching.

INTRODUCTION At present, the capability of production planning software based on Linear Programming (LP) is still limited to the optimization of the single LP-run. This is due to the LP-model itself which cannot consider the interdependencies between individual LP- runs. With regard to planning of selective mining this limited way of optimization frequently leads to situations, where the remaining and accessible ore blocks do no longer allow to produce ROM-ore in the qualitative composition required by the ore processing plant. However, many of the aspects taken into consideration when setting up production plans built from mutually dependent LP-runs cannot be modelled in a system of linear equations. They are thus unsuited for treatment with LP and have to be taken care of by the planning engineer without any assistance by the system. The KBS currently under development is intended to assist the planning engineer in designing a production plan under special consideration of the combination of consecutive LP-runs and blending beds. It is not necessarily intended to find the optimum solution within a given planning situation which is, anyway, hard to determine due to the multitude of influences. The objective is rather to work out a good and - from the practical point of view - feasible production plan. The new aspect with respect to mine planning is the integration of expert knowledge and experiences via the KBS into the planning process in order to support the planning engineer. The planning system is being developed in close cooperation with an iron-ore open pit mine. COMPONENTS OF THE PLANNING SYSTEM The software is being developed on a workstation under UNIX and comprises the components LP, CAD-module and the KBS. The applied multi-goal LP-algorithm is an in-house development of the Department of Mining Engineering at Technical University Berlin. It was already successfully implemented within other mine planning programmes and was only slightly adapted to the specific needs of the present system. Within individual LP- runs it finds the optimum qualitative composition of ore production in the sense of the selected optimizing criterion and under the given restrictions: i.e. it determines tonnages to be mined from blocks in order to optimally meet the requirements of the ore pro- cessing plant. A CAD-module based on the commercial SURPAC package in combination with a simulation device is used to graphically depict the block model and progress of mining. Both LP-algorithm and CAD-package are integrated in the KBS. It has been decided to use the shell NEXPERT OBJECT as it is a hybrid system which supports both rule-based and object-oriented knowledge representation. MINE-MODEL AND LP-MODEL KBS have to be tailor-made for specific planning problems. Therefore, it had to be decided which specifications of the iron-ore mine should be represented in the model. As the limited possibilities of a university institute do not allow to develop a KBS for mine planning which is ready to use in industry, it was decided to concentrate on those characteristics that can be regarded as typical for iron-ore surface mines and that seemed to be suited for treatment with knowledge-based techniques. The following chapter summarizes the most important features of the mine model. The description of the requirements to the mine&apos;s sales products is followed by an outline of the applied LP-model. Mine model • The model of the mine as it is used for planning consists of • the block model of the deposit, • the mobile equipment, • stockpiles and blending bed and • the requirements to the sales products. The deposit is described by a block model which contains data on the chemical composition, LOI, grain size and tonnages. Grain size was included as it is important for the two sales products of the mine. Furthermore, it is known whichs blocks require and which don&apos;t require blasting; this is relevant to the assignment of loading equipment to individual blocks. The blocks are devided in three categories: • ore, which will directly be taken to the blending bed; • waste, which will be put on the waste dump; and • blocks which will be either transported to the blending bed, to stockpiles or to the waste dump depending on the specific planning situation. This decision is made during planning. Neighboring blocks are combined in mining areas to which the loading equipment is individually assigned. Mobile equipment comprises shovels and wheel-loaders as well as trucks. The characteristics of the loading equipment are important for their ability to load different blocks and for the permissible degree of their re-positioning etc. The mine disposes of a blending bed for homogenization of the production, of a waste dump, and of several stockpiles with different ore qualities. The requirement to make only limited use of the stockpiles for economic reasons is included in the KBS. According to long term planning two commercial products have to be produced, which differ both in grain size and qualitative composition (TABLE 1). Their mass-proportions in the blending bed have to be within a fixed range. Not considered in long term planning is the occasional need for lump ore, which occurs at very short notice and has to be produced in a "campaign-like" manner. The Miami In-situ mine of BHP Copper is located in Globe-Miami, Arizona. The mine leaches mineralized leach capping over a supergene enriched sulfide deposit, and has produced over 500 million lbs of copper during the last 50 years. The Miami unit has identified several opportunities to enhance and expand in-situ production. A computer block model consisting of strict geologic controls, mineralogy, and metallurgical data was developed to assist in the determination of the leachable copper resource. An understanding of the accessibility and solubility of the resource to leaching solutions and the integration of hydrogeologic and hydrometallurgical information was necessary for completion of this project.

The minerals industry contributes to the economic growth, prosperity and quality of life of nations, particularly in areas where there might be limited opportunities for employment in other sectors. However, notwithstanding their economic importance, the minerals extraction and processing industries are considered to have significant impacts on the surrounding environment. In recent years many mines have implemented modern monitoring technology and modelling of the monitored environmental parameters to provide scientifically proven indicators about the state of the environment. The flexibility required by the minerals industry to respond dynamically to a changing natural, social and economic environment has become a major consideration. Whilst the notion of continuous improvement is embodied within most environmental management systems, what is now required is a structured audit trail which tracks the flow of resources through the production process to the ultimate environmental impact associated with their consumption, transformation and disposal. Imperial College is coordinating an EC funded project, which is developing a methodology to minimise the ?full life-cycle? impact of metalliferous mining projects, adopting an integrated approach to production and process design, and the costs involved. In order to develop a life cycle assessment (LCA) system that will incorporate different types of data related to the minerals extraction operations, a data inventory was designed and coded in an object-relational database model. The calculation procedures accounting for the input/output balance of the alternative scenarios for mining production, processing, waste disposal, monitoring, and their financial implications are being programmed into a software system. This paper presents the rational and innovative aspects of this work. The methodology developed for the life cycle database is illustrated for the mining production and gaseous emissions components of the system.

The automatic data-acquisition systems that are now available can continuously monitor and record changes in leg pressure and changes in advancing ram stroke in every shield. These systems can record shearer position at any moment during a mining operation. The data obtained can be used to improve production and maintenance management and can be used to provide better roof control at the longwall face. Research now being conducted jointly by West Virginia University and Cyprus Amax Coal Co. is aimed at developing a longwall-management system (LMS) for mine operators. The LMS software package, which works in the Microsoft Windows NT environment, performs data interpretation and analysis, production management, maintenance management and ground-control management for longwall mining.

In order to effectively use the massive data obtained from this system for improving production and maintenance managements as well as providing better roof control at a longwall face, the research currently conducted jointly by West Virginia University and Cyprus-Amax Coal Co. attempts to develop a Longwall Management System for mine operators. The LMS software package runs on a MS Windows NT environment and consists of four sub-systems: (1) Data Interpretation and Analysis; (2) Production Management; (3) Maintenance Management; and (4) Ground Control. This paper presents the details of each sub-system.

A mathematical model of a shaking table is being developed, for inclusion in a package for the simulation of gravity concentration. The general form of the modules and how they fit into the package is briefly described. The separation on a shaking table is controlled by a number of operating variables and the importance of these variables in the model development is discussed. The influence of wash water, feed pulp density, deck slope, deck amplitude and mass feed rate are reported. The form of the model is described being based on the probability of a particle of defined size and density reporting to a specific discharge site. The mathematical relationships which relate size and density distributions to variations in the operating parameters are presented. The use of these functions in the prediction of the performance of a shaking table is outlined.

The paper describes the design and operation of a Shaft Boring Machine (SBM). The machine has been developed by The Robbins Company. It is anticipated that the prototype, which will bore shafts in the 6.1 to 7.3 m (20 to 24 ft) size range, will be placed in operation during 1985. This pioneering application of rapid excavation technology is expected to lead to significant improvements in the cost and speed of shaft construction. The technical and economic factors which have limited the employment of Shaft Drilling and which caused unsatisfactory results with earlier attempts at Shaft Boring are reviewed. The design criteria adapted to overcome these problems are discussed. Cost and performance estimates are presented and are compared to conventional sinking methods. Factors that influence the application of the SBM to specific projects are reviewed.

In modern mining, the core of mine planning and design is the block model, a simplified representation wherein the ore deposit is divided in a number of virtual rock cubes, each characterized by technical and economics parameters. Mining engineers use this model to design the mine and develop production schedules. Traditionally, sustainability issues are not considered in the mine design, planning and engineering processes but rather are incorporated in the later stages of the feasibility evaluation as necessary expenditures and operating costs. This paper describes the results of a research project aiming to develop a methodology to incorporate sustainability parameters directly into the block model, so that they become an integral part of the design, planning and scheduling processes. It is considered that the incorporation of sustainable parameters into the block model would yield a more responsible mine design and improve mining projects sustainability performance

During a mine disaster or emergency, underground air can quickly become contaminated. In these circumstances, all underground mine workers are taught to don breathable air supply units at the first sign of an emergency. However, no contemporary oxygen consumption data is available for the purposes of designing breathing air supply equipment specifically for mine escape. Further, it would be useful to quantify the oxygen requirements of breathing air supply users for various escape scenarios. To address this need, 14 participants crawled a distance of 305 m each while their breath-by-breath oxygen consumption measurements were taken. Using these data, linear regression models were developed to determine peak and average oxygen consumption rates as well as total oxygen consumption. These models can be used by manufacturers of breathing air supply equipment to aid in the design of devices that would be capable of producing sufficient on-demand oxygen to allow miners to perform self-escape.

A multimedia tutorial illustrating the geology and mineral resources of Gulf Coast salt domes has been developed as a pilot project for a course on Texas geology and resources at the University of Texas at Austin. The principal objective of the tutorial is to educate students with limited background in geological sciences about a major local geologic feature and its geologic and economic significance. The content of the tutorial represents materials generally covered in 4 hours of lecture and laboratory instruction. These materials are presented using a flattened hierarchy of topics, each accessible from a central menu, including salt-dome history, salt tectonics, anhydrite and calcite cap rocks, mineral resources, and geophysical character. Information concerning salt-dome geology is communicated using interactive software; sound and animation are used throughout to reinforce key concepts. Visual aspects include field views, hand specimens, and photomicrographs that were digitized from slides. Illustrations were created using a graphics program or scanned from available archives. Each visual element has an accompanying explanation, which in many cases is linked to other parts of the tutorial. Navigation is accomplished using hyper-links or a set of unobtrusive buttons. The program includes a glossary of the major minerals associated with salt domes available as a pull-down menu and digitized video footage of the Gulf of Mexico sea floor to illustrate the active environment of the formation of the salt-dome cap rock. In addition, a group of interactive questions is presented to assess the level of mastery. Technical aspects were accomplished using a Power Macintosh ? 7100AV and a variety of commercial software. Actual linking of information was done with Authorware? 3.0 Educational, an icon-based, multimedia authoring program. Graphic illustration was done with Adobe Illustrator ?; image processing was accomplished using Adobe Photoshop?; video was cap¬tured, edited, and compressed using Adobe Premiere ?. The interactive nature of the project was designed with regard to future means of dissemination, especially on the World Wide Web. This tutorial serves as a template to build additional modules covering the entire course. A modular approach to the coding of the project and extensive self-documentation should ensure the viabil¬ity of the project by allowing other workers with moder¬ate computer skills to complete other lessons within the curriculum framework.

"It is well known that froth visual features reflect the operating conditions of the flotation process, so that being able to accurately obtain the froth properties is the most significant criteria to optimize and control this process. Froth segmentation is a useful procedure that can determine the bubble size distribution. Several algorithms have been proposed in this field, but marker-based watershed transform shows the best performance. In spite of this fact, the algorithm suffers from oversegmentation in cases when the flotation froth includes large bubbles along with small ones. In the paper, the marker-based watershed method is modified to prevent oversegmentation of large bubbles. The developed algorithm is validated using some froth images captured at different operating conditions, so the results indicate that the method can segment the mixture of big and small bubbles effectively.IntroductionFroth flotation is a widely used process for separating valuable from gangue minerals. Effective control of flotation circuits has a dramatic effect on overall performance of a mineral processing plant. In most flotation plants, process operators monitor the froth surface visually and make adjustments to process parameters based on their interpretation of the surface appearance and their idea of the appearance of an ideal froth. However, due to natural complexity of the flotation process, achieving optimal control is often not possible for human operators.In recent years, attempts have been made to control the flotation circuits using machine vision systems (Moolman et al., 1995; 1996a,b; Bartolacci et al., 2006; Kaartinen et al., 2006; Vanegas and Holtham, 2008; Aldrich et al., 2010). The froth bubble size distribution is the most significant control variable that reflects the operating conditions in a flotation machine. To date, a number of approaches have been proposed for bubble size measurement from froth images, including segmentation (Sadr-kazemi and Cilliers, 1997; Wang et al., 2003; Mehrshad and Massinaei, 2011), texture spectrum (Nguyen and Thornton, 1995), wavelet (Liu et al., 2005), an improved texture spectrum approach, a method based on binary images (Lin et al., 2008) and, finally, using interfacial morphological information (Yang et al., 2009)."

Dry separation was the predominant method of coal cleaning in the United States from the 1930s to 1980s. The application peak of dry separators for cleaning raw coal was in 1965, when about 23.1 Mt of cleaned bituminous coal was produced. The main advantage of dry coal cleaning is the elimination RIWKH GHZDWHULQJ VWDJHV DQG VLJQL¿FDQWO\ UHGXFHG moisture in comparison to wet processing. In addition, developed dust control systems have made dry cleaning method an environmentally friendly process. The largest air-based coal cleaning plant was built in Pennsylvania in 1968 and could clean 1,272 t/h of raw coal sized smaller than 19 mm. This was followed by a decline in dry coal cleaning to less than 3.6 Mt in 1988. A new magnetic liner, with unique magnetic circuit and novel structure designs, was developed. It was characterized by light weight, low noise, as well as corrosive and abrasive resistance. The wear rate of the magnetic liner was one twentieth and one ninth those of the manganese-alloy steel and rubber ones respectively. The forming mechanism of the protective layer and that of influencing factors on magnetic liners were also investigated. The research results could not only instruct using magnetic liner, but also widen their application.

"The large extent of global production and consumption of aggregates from quarries, grabs one´s attention and makes its substantial and essential standpoint in the world today pretty clear. A great amount of aggregates is utilized in civil engineering applications such as road construction, railway industry, concrete production, etc. Considering this fact that igneous rocks display a higher strength and abrasion resistance, this type of rock is preferred in the field of civil engineering. For all these applications, rock quality assurance is a key factor and certainly unavoidable, and it has great influence on the quality of constructions in civil engineering. One of the major problems encountered by both the producers and users of igneous rock is the fact that, with the passage of time, some specific rocks lose their strength, up to a complete loss of structure or in other words, their disintegration and degradation. In the last decades, different methods and procedures such as Glycol test, methylene blue dye test, as well as the Los Angeles test have been introduced to distinguish these rock properties, and to identify these problems. However, as these methods are time consuming, hard to perform, only to be applied to hand-piece samples, requiring special laboratory equipments, and only possible to be accomplished under laboratory conditions, their application has always been limited to some specific cases, and they are neither recommendable nor advantageous. In addition, these methods provide partially different results for the same rock. To address this widespread quality management problem of the quarry industry, a relatively quick, easy and user-friendly approach is necessary. It calls for a systematic solution with a device that can simply be used day to day in a mine for quality control of the quarry´s daily production. This scientific research is concentrated on developing a systematic method for early recognition and diagnosis of rock quality, in order to control and manage the quality of the quarry production in advance. This method was developed, based on the procedure of the magnetic susceptibility measurement. The obtained values can lead to valuable information regarding the quality of the rock and allows the quality control process to be accomplished and performed at the borehole location. This approach has been assessed through extensive field and laboratory studies. A detailed and comprehensive discussion will be made on the results of the experiments. The advantages and impacts of the application of this method, on increasing the reserves and environmental protection are also discussed."

A couple of miles southwest of the town of Saltville in the western tip of Virginia is a little village called Plasterco. Gypsum has been produced in this area since about the year 1815, being originally found as small outcrops at the surface. Production in the early days was very small, and the use of the mineral was limited to that of "land plaster" or ground gypsum which was spread on the land to sweeten the soil. In the late 1800&apos;s, a small calcining plant was constructed and the production of gypsum plaster began. About this same time, the surface rock was depleted and it became necessary to begin underground mining operations in order to maintain a continuous supply of raw material. The United States Gypsum Company became interested in this property in 1909, and has operated there ever since, having enlarged the calcining mill and built a plant for the manufacture of gypsum wall-board in the middle 1920&apos;s. Production of gypsum continues from underground&apos; mining operations, and the present mine at Plasterco is now about 1,000 feet below the surface, making it the deepest gypsum mine&apos; in the world.

Prediction of blast fragmentation plays a key role for overall productivity of mines. In this study, a new multivariate analysis procedure for prediction of blast fragmentation is presented. Several blasts performed in various mines and rock formations worldwide were brought together and evaluated. An extensive blast database was created. Blast design parameters, the modulus of elasticity and in-situ block size were considered to perform multivariate analysis. A complete multivariate analysis procedure was applied in three steps. First, a hierarchical cluster analysis was used to separate the blast data into different groups of similarity. Two different groups were formed based on the elasticity modulus values. In the second step, group memberships were checked by discriminant analysis. The dominant parameters of the occurrence of the groups were determined. Also, discriminant analysis was used to determine the group membership of the respective blasts. As the last step, the multivariate regression analysis was applied to develop prediction equations for estimation of the mean particle size of muckpiles. Two different prediction equations were developed based on the rock stiffness. Validation of the proposed equations on various mines was performed. Prediction capability of the proposed models was found to be strong. The models are not complex and are suitable for practical use at mines.
