Mining-induced coal dust causes various respiratory diseases to mine workers, such as coal workers’ pneumoconiosis (CWP). Current available underground monitors are expensive, heavy and only measure mass concentration. These disadvantages limit them for regulatory sample monitoring purposes only while personal exposure levels for most miners remain unknown, risking miners to potential overexposures. Low-cost light scattering PM sensors offer a potential solution to this problem with capability of high spatio-temporal resolution PM characterization. However, these sensors require careful calibration before they can be applied in mining environments. There is basically no comprehensive study in the literature using a standard protocol assessing these sensors for coal dust monitoring. With the aim of calibrating the PMS5003 sensors for coal dust monitoring, we design the calibration method and system to calibrate these low-cost PM sensors coal dust monitoring. Working principles of present coal dust monitor and low-cost sensors are presented in detail. The linear regression calibration model which is used for the sensor calibration is further described. Sensor calibration and evaluation protocols are comprehensively compared and discussed. This investigation reveals the feasibility of low-cost sensors for real-time personal coal dust monitoring in underground coal mines.

This paper proposes a new approach for calibration of dual gamma-energy transmission (DU-ET) ash analyser for improved online analysis of run-of-mine lignite. An adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) was developed to model the relationship between the intensities measured by the scintillation counter of the analyzer and the measured ash. Samples collected from Megalopolis lignite mines were measured for their ash content by using standard laboratory methods as well as by DUET. Obtained data was divided into training, testing and validation sets. A first order Sugeno type ANFIS was used in conjunction with early stop training. The calibration performance obtained by this approach was significantly better compared with that obtained by standard calibration methods based on multiple linear regression analysis.

A novel form of calibration of on-line analyzers was implemented. Rather than simple equations, a neural network was used to model the relationship between the scintillation counts (Am and Cs) of an analyzer, and the measured ash for improved on-line analysis of run-of-mine (r.o.m.) coal. Also, a new approach was followed to better evaluate neural network performance. Samples were first divided into various statistically different groups using a Kohonen network. Data was then selected for the training, calibration and prediction subsets, using criteria developed in this paper for sparse data, with representation from each group. A backpropagation based neural network architecture was used in conjunction with quick stop training. Due to noise in the data, the predictions were very good on average, but not individually.

Previous research developed guide- lines to restrict the placement of air velocity sensors to areas of Low turbulence in underground nines. Even though these guidelines are theoretically correct, and may be easy to follow in underground coal mines, their application in small underground metal mines is difficult. As a result, study was undertaken at the Colorado School of Mines Experimental Mine to determine if an air velocity sensor could be placed in other locations with acceptable results. It was found chat by applying a variable calibration function to correct for changes in amounts of turbulence, instead of the previously used calibration factor multiplication, the sensor could be used successfully in areas of moderate turbulence.

Discrete Element Method (DEM) software has been successfully used to simulate various machine/soil interactions and provide insight for industries such as mining and bulk material processing. This paper will investigate typical calibration techniques used in particle models for DEM simulation and physical calibration experiments with soft ground TBM cutting tools to incorporate parameters such as tool drag forces that contribute to required TBM torque. With a well calibrated DEM model, it is expected that TBM simulation results will be more meaningful and provide better insight into TBM performance, power requirements, cutting tool placement, and overall cutter head design.

The California High Speed Rail Authority (Authority) was created by the State of California through legislation in 1996. The purpose of the Authority is to plan, construct, finance and operate a statewide intercity high speed passenger rail system. In 2004 the Authority prepared a programmatic level environmental document in compliance with the California Environmental Quality and National Environmental Protection Acts (CEQA and NEPA).The Authority and Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) were the lead agencies overseeing the development of the environmental documentation. The resulting document includes two volumes and 64 supplemental technical reports analyzing the transportation needs for California and the selection of an approach to meeting the project transportation needs. The Programmatic Environmental Impact Report and Environmental Impact Statement (EIR/EIS) identified High Speed Rail as the most environ-mentally protective, sustainable and economical approach to meeting the state?s projected transportation needs.

Few members of the general public have a clear understanding of mineral resources. Most people do not know how minerals are mined or why they must be extracted from many diverse locations. Many people acquire knowledge of mineral development from mass media sources with incomplete details or obvious anti-mining bias. The California Mineral Education Foundation was formed in 1991 to provide educational opportunities for the public and industry. There have been major changes in earth science teaching requirements for kindergarten through 12th grade (K-12) curricula since the passage of California Senate Bill 813 in 1983. Model graduation standards, curriculum standards and the state science framework mandate substantial coverage of geoscience topics. The California State Commission on Teacher Credentialing has completed changes in multiple subject and single subject science credentials which will require more geoscience preparation for all teachers. The need for pre-service and in-service education in geoscience is at an all time high. Teachers must have continuing education to maintain their credentials and many are now seeking information in geoscience. The California Mineral Education Foundation designed and conducted the California Mineral Education Conferences held in August 1991 and 1992. The conferences involved lectures and field trips on mining geology, environmental problems and political concerns. Master teachers were employed to share how they get across mineral resource concepts in the classroom. Ninety-six percent of the participants stated that they had changed to a more positive perception of mining after taking the three day course.

Introduction The Sierra Nevada Foothill Gold Belt in California extends from Mariposa north for more than 420 km (200 miles). It includes the Grass Valley and Alleghany districts in the zone of Northern Mines and the famous Mother Lode to the south. The gold belt has produced more than 3.1 kt (100 million oz) of gold since its discovery in 1848. This remarkable production, at the present gold price, would be valued at more than $40 billion. The Law of Gambler's Ruin supposes that averages are based on systematic rather than random variations. It emphasizes the vast differences between finite and infinite probability. By applying this Law to this figure, it can be seen that the belt has produced an average of 15.5 t (500,000 oz) of gold per running mile. Many geologists believe, with some justification, that less than half the gold in this belt has been mined. Sixty per cent of the past production has come from lode deposits, the balance from Tertiary and Recent placer gravels. This paper will concern itself with the developing lode mines along the Sierra Nevada Foothill Gold Belt. As a further and final note regarding placer mining along this belt, Mark Twain suggested that placer miners, having lost their senses, had contributed liberally to the population of California's insane asylums. After a 40-year lull with little or no gold production, the lode mines of this famous belt are showing signs of renewed activity. Two open pit mines, the Sonora (Jamestown) and Carson Hill, are now in operation at substantial scales. Two others, the Goldenbell (Pine Tree-Josephine) and the Royal-Mountain King, are being readied for production on equally impressive scales. All are in the southern part of the Mother Lode. Exploration farther north, at Sutter Creek, Drytown, and Georgetown, is showing encouraging results in developing deeper lode deposits. This new activity has been sponsored to a large extent by junior Canadian mining and exploration companies. Most of the established American mining companies have looked the other way, not participating in this important development. One major reason for domestic disinterest in this opportunity is there is little chance for heap leachable open pit ore in this belt, excluding Carson Hill. And heap leaching has become fashionable with American mining companies today. Also, this great old gold belt must have been worked out, for why else is there so little activity here - Catch 22 logic. Another reason is that if a new deposit of size and grade similar to the mines in the past was found, high costs would preclude a profitable operation. And, finally, California environmentalists would not permit mining, even if a rich deposit were found. These may all be pefectly valid reasons not to explore for gold along this belt. But a look at the history of gold mining in California may suggest that the future for exploration and development of the gold resources in the Sierra Nevada Foothills can be greater than the past. It was during the Depression of the 1930s that this gold belt saw its maximum activity, with more than 3000 mines in operation. "Seeing the elephant" was a term often heard from 1849 to 1859, the period of the great California Gold Rush. The phrase was used by those who dreamed of instant wealth that was believed could be found in California's virgin earth and mighty rivers. When news of fabulous gold strikes throughout the Mother Lode reached far away places, thousands of gold seekers left home and family to join in this incredible adventure. The barren, placid state of California soon became one of the most bustling, populous areas in the West. Before the Rush Before 1848, Mexico ruled California. It was then a remote region, isolated from the urbane world of the East by 2900 km (1800 miles) of scorching desert and impassible mountains. By sea, it was 29 000 km (18,000 miles) via Cape Horn. Spaniards and Mexicans settled the coastal lands on tracts donated to them by the Mexican government. The inland area was the domain of Indians and a few settlers who also had been granted estates by the government. Among those settlers was Captain John Sutter. He had been fortunate enough to obtain about 11 leagues of land (spanning 100 km or 60 miles in length) from Governor Alvarado of Mexico. Sutter was somewhat of a visionary and possessed a gifted tongue. He managed to receive most of what he desired with minimal trouble. Enchanted with Sutter's personality, Alvarado promised him Mexican citizenship. Alvarado also commissioned him to become "representative of the government and officer of justice on the Northern frontier." With uncanny foresight, Sutter began building a fortress on his land in the Sacramento Valley. It later became known as Sutter's Fort. It was more than just a fort, however. It also became a stopping place and home for many foreigners and Americans who traveled to California, and it eventually became the mecca for overland pilgrims. Sutter engaged in many projects. These included a cattle ranch, fur trade and trapping, and the construction of an irrigation system. With the influx of immigrants over the years, the community around the fort grew rapidly. Lumber was much in demand and Captain Sutter agreed to supply the necessary capital for a community sawmill. The site chosen was some 72 km (45 miles) northeast of the fort on the south fork of the American River in the town of Coloma. During the course of its construction, Sutter's carpenter, James Marshall, discovered a problem with the tailrace on the mill. First Strike Early in the morning on Jan. 24, 1848, Marshall was checking the tailrace. He noticed an object shining in a foot of water at the bottom of a ditch. He reached down and picked it up. His heart began to thump wildly as he realized he was holding a gold nugget. Sutter planned to keep the find a secret for as long as possible. Adsorption of sodium dodecylsulfonate (SDS) and dodecylaminium hydrochloride (DAH) on Buller seam coal, New Zealand, have been studied. Both surfactants adsorb effectively on the coal below pH 8, and the adsorption isotherms established at pH 4 are essentially the same at lower concentrations. These findings suggest that the adsorption of these two ionic surfactants on coal is controlled by a hydrophobic bonding mechanism. However, the results of calorimetric studies suggest that coulombic attraction also plays a part in the adsorption mechanisms. It has also been found that both the SDS and DAH adsorbed in the first monolayer are not removed by lowering the surfactant concentrations in the bulk solution.

The paper will discuss the successful construction of the largest dollar value ($194.5 million, U.S.) TARP (Tunnel and Reservoir Plan) project built to date for the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago. The mining and lining of the 18.5km (11.54 miles) tunnels will be emphasized. The tunnels were driven utilizing three TBMs ranging in size from 9.85m (32.33 ft) to 3.70m (12.16 ft) in diameter. The operations surrounding the 11,546m (37,876 ft) long 9.85m (32.33 ft) diameter tunnel will be highlighted. A total system concept was utilized to attain mining rates up to 29.3m (96 ft) per shift and lining productions of 58.5m (192 ft) per day. The reliability of these systems was instrumental in the completion of the project more than a year ahead of schedule.

Many mining companies try to fight their way up from small operator and exploration company to major producer. Not many companies make it. Cambior Inc., formed in 1986, is one company well on its way to making it as a major operating company. In 1993, Cambior surpassed 15.5 t (500,000 oz) of gold production and began operations at its world class Omai gold mine in Guyana. At the same time, the company has embarked on a program of geographic and minerals diversification. Cambior, a Canadian company, now has interests in eight mines, three development projects and more than 100 exploration properties in North and South America. The company’s goal is to derive 70% of its income from gold and 30% from base metals and other minerals. Cambior’s moderate diversification into base metals gives protection against negative gold price fluctuations. It also balances the typically short term gold mines and the longer term base metal mines.

The traditional approach to safety clearance monitoring and proper PPE usage in underground mines is time-consuming, costly, and susceptible to negligence. However, automated real-time monitoring can be implemented using computer vision-based approaches. This study aims to develop a system that provides timely information based on the automatic detection of proper PPE use and safety clearance in underground mines. Deep learning and a decentralized computing structure between the cloud and sensing devices (fog technology) are used. We hypothesize that a camera-based system can provide near real-time assessment of proper PPE use and verified clearance to access restricted areas in underground mines.

The aluminous nature of the laterites capping the Minim Martap plateaus - named after two neighbouring villages - and the small nearby upland of Ngaoundal, was discovered by the Cameroon Mines and Geology Division in 1958. These deposits of worldwide importance, are located in the Ngaoundere region, some 500 km (300 miles) north-east from the port of Douala (as the crow flies). They constitute the major part of the Cameroonese mining potential. The study of the deposits and their economic development has been entrusted to SEBACAM, Societe d'Etudes des Bauxites du Cameroun, a company in which the Cameroon government participates. The bauxites originate from the transformation into laterite of lavas which covered a Precambrian basement during the Upper Cretaceous period and the Lower Tertiary era. The entire Minim Martap deposit comprises bauxite plateaus ranging in area from a few acres to several square miles. The average thickness of the bauxite layer varies from 10 metres at Minim Martap to 17 metres at Ngaoundal. The mineral constituents of the bauxite are gibbsite trihydrate, kaolinite and the usual iron and titanium oxides. Treatment of the ore does not involve any particular technical problems. Proven exploitable reserves amount to 560 million tonnes of dry bauxite with a reactive silica content of 1.80% and an available alumina content of 43.70% at Minim Martap, and 120

"Newmont Mining Corporation operates the Yanacocha mine in Perú and the gold milling section of the property includes a Sulfidization-Acidification-Recycle-Thickening (SART) plant to remove copper from pregnant leach solution. Since its commissioning in 2008, the plant has been intermittently operated as needed to remove copper upstream of a carbon adsorption circuit. However, starting in 2015 Newmont expects the plant to operate on a more continuous basis in response to higher copper ores that will be processed in the gold mill. In anticipation of this, Newmont conducted a campaign in May 2014 with stockpiled high-copper ore to evaluate performance of the SART plant with elevated levels of copper in feed solution. Results from the campaign demonstrated the SART plant is capable of efficiently treating high-copper leach solution. During the campaign, leach solution copper levels ranged from about 100 to 700 mg/L, and copper removals ranging from about 56% to +99% were achieved. The median copper removal efficiency observed during the campaign was about 94%. The primary plant modification determined necessary following the campaign was the need to improve consistency with sulfide dosing. INTRODUCTION Copper removal from cyanide leach solution can be affected through the addition of sulfide at acidic pH to precipitate copper sulfide as a solid. There has been renewed interest in the process in the past several years due to the increasingly common issue of high copper levels in cyanide leach solutions. The term Sulfidization- Acidification-Recycle-Thickening (SART) is used as an acronym for the process according to the primary unit operations utilized. At a pH of approximately 4.0 to 5.0, the addition of soluble sulfide to a copper-bearing leach solution will result in the precipitation of copper sulfide (Cu2S) solid. The overall acidification and sulfidization reaction is (assuming the use of sulfuric acid for pH adjustment): 2Cu(CN)3-2 + 3H2SO4 + S-2 ? Cu2S(s) + 6HCN(aq) + 3SO4-2 The above reaction is written relative to the copper-cyanide complex 2Cu(CN)3-2, though analogous reactions also take place with the other common copper-cyanide complexes Cu(CN)2- and Cu(CN)4-3. Sulfide in the above reaction (S-2) is normally supplied as sodium hydrosulfide (NaHS) purchased in solid or concentrated liquid form. Two characteristics of this reaction that are beneficial to a leaching operation are: 1. Copper is removed from solution as Cu2S (synthetic chalcocite) solid, which can then be sold to a smelter for its copper value. 2. Cyanide that is complexed with copper in the leach solution is released as free cyanide, thereby regenerating cyanide that can be recycled to the leaching operation for continued use."

Campbell Red Lake Mine is situated at Balmertown, in the Red Lake District of Northwestern Ontario, Canada. This area is some 120 miles north of the Trans Canada Highway and is some 160 miles Northeast of Winnipeg, Manitoba. The majority of our 300 employees live in Balmertown, which is a community of some 1,200 people, situated adjacent to the mine proper. The mine is serviced by a single shaft 4,300 feet deep. There are 27 levels at 150 ft. intervals. Stoping is being carried out down to the 20th level with only preliminary development having been done on the bottom 6 levels. The majority of our mill feed of 825 tons per calendar day comes from above the 10th level. Gold occurs as specks and streaks in bluish-grey to white quartz carbonate veins. It is extremely fine grained and most is invisible to the unaided eye. In addition to Gold the veins carry varying amounts of sulphides such as, Arsenopyrite, Stibnite, Pyrite, Pyrrhotite and Sphalerite. A minor amount of silver occurs as an impurity in the gold. Arsenopyrite is a marker for the gold ore at Campbell. The average grade of the mill feed is 0.7 oz. of gold per ton. The ore is dumped into an underground ore pass that feeds to a jaw crusher on the 20th level that reduces the rock to a maximum size of 4". This material is hoisted by skips to an ore bin in the head frame.

Despite the abundance of solid mineral deposits, Nigeria only earns about 0.5-1% of its current Gross Domestic Product (GDP) from the solid minerals sector. This is as a result of the dominance of the oil and gas industry, which has negatively affected the competitiveness of other sectors of Nigeria’s economy. The dominance of this industry has resulted in unemployment, poverty, hunger, domestic price inflation, corruption, unstable government, and higher exchange rates. These impacts are typical for economies suffering from the effects of "Dutch Disease" and the "Resource Curse". Community-based small-scale mining offers hope as an economic activity that can create wealth, employment, reduce hunger and poverty, and provide basic amenities for rural communities with solid minerals endowment. This study presents preliminary results of ongoing research into the prospects of using community-based small-scale mining in a developing country like Nigeria to move towards rural sustainable development.

Computer programs developed as part of the PROSPECTOR project at SRI International can indicate where the highest grade hypogene copper occurs in porphyry copper prospects. The programs are useful in selecting drilling targets in untested porphyry deposits. Because of mineralogic, structural and lithologic variations in porphyry-type deposits, three distinct computer programs have been constructed; however, this paper considers only the stockwork type in homogeneous rock (similar to the Lowell and Guilbert model). The programs represent models in the form of inference networks that utilize the mineralogic, alteration, lithologic, structural, geochemical and geophysical data normally collected prior to a drilling decision. One example of an application of the PROSPECTOR program for a stockwork-homogeneous porphyry is given: Island Cooper in British Columbia. Computations based on the surface geologic, geochemical and geophysical data for Island Copper clearly disclose the best hypogene grade of the deposit. Other deposits were tested in the programs as well, and in each case PROSPECTOR programs indicate the region with the highest hypogene grade.

The current trend in gold ore processing is the development of lower grade or highly refractory deposits. The perplexity of treating low grade oxidized ores has been adequately addressed by heap leach technology. However, refractory gold ores are very difficult to positively characterize the gold association within the mineral matrix. Gold accompanied with refractory sulfitlc or carbonaceous mineralization can often be sub­micron In size and occur interstitially. Mineralogical examination of these ores Is difficult, expensive, and occasionally Inconclusive. Hence, the metallurgist Is given little information for the selection of processing alternatives. The purpose of this paper Is to demonstrate the use of diagnostic leach procedures to assist the metallurgist' s decision-making process to solve some of these problems. By sequentially liberating and/or leaching gold associated with specific minerals, the amount of recoverable gold in each stage can be determined. Through careful interpretation of the results obtained by diagnostic leaching, the metallurgist can devise a flowsheet for treating the ore or solve a problem at an existing plant

In recent years, several geotechnical methods have been successfully applied to ash pond closure. These include modified dewatering techniques with wellpoints and wells to physically drain the material, soil mixing to create a soil-concrete material for improved accessways as well as improved ground structures within ponds to act as barriers or gravity dams, and geotechnical instrumentation to serve as an early warning of the potential for liquefaction. Given the parallels between fly ash and sluiced in place mine tailings, the application of fly ash remediation method to mine tailings shows significant potential, as illustrated in this paper.
