This paper is concerned with applied platinum resistance thermometry which involves many considerations absent in precision thermometry. The historical development of the Callendar-Van Dusen Equation which describes the resistance- temperature relation of pure platinum is discussed. The advantage of using platinum resistance temperature sensors over thermocouples is described, and the improvements in design and construction of these sensors that have come about in the past few years are discussed. Integral and remote bridges that convert resistance changes into voltage together with signal conditioning techniques and equipment for voltage or current signals are described. Errors encountered in temperature measuring schemes and methods to reduce these errors are summarized.

Suites of monomineralic sulfide and carbonate minerals, as well as mine-waste composite samples, were analyzed using chemical and microanalytical techniques to understand behavior and bioavailability of mine waste elements such as Cu, Fe, Pb, or Zn. Petrographic, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and laser-ablation inductively-coupled mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) studies of mineralogical residence sites of trace elements are important because trace elements affect the chemical and physical behavior of minerals. Leachate solutions show that chalcopyrite, bornite, azurite, malachite, and galena are host to the trace elements Ag, Al, As, Cd, Co, Cr, Mn, Ni, Pb, and Zn. SEM studies reveal whether these trace elements occur within mineral inclusions or are substituted within lattice structures. SEM analysis reveals mineral phases not identified by X-ray diffraction (XRD), such as inclusions of sphalerite and cobaltite(?) within chalcopyrite.

Metallurgists are continuously striving to improve recovery. But optimization of profits and/or revenue dictates that recovery can be sacrificed at the expense of throughput. However, recently there has been significant interest in the concept of retreatment of tailings to enhance recovery and hence revenue while maintaining high throughput. The authors discuss the technical and economic factors that need to be considered in evaluation of the feasibility of retreatment of tailings including the potential feed streams (i.e., rougher tailings, cleaner tailings, etc.) and processing options (i.e., physical beneficiation, chemical processing, etc.). A case study for base metals is discussed.

Boddington Gold Mine1 (BGM) commenced production in 1987 and is currently ranked as the second largest gold producer in Australia. In a strategy to improve plant efficiency, constraints to plant performance were identified and prioritised with a view to maximising benefit for minimal expenditure. After identifying that leach kinetics and circuit residence time were major constraints, the introduction of oxygen was identified as having the greatest potential for the delivery of sig­nificant cost benefits. The application of oxygen, initially by conventional tech­niques, and subsequently by installation of Atomaer's Filblast gas shear reactor, improved gold recovery, reduced the resi­dence time constraint and enabled higher mill throughput to be achieved. Additional benefits included operation at lower pulp densities and a reduction in reagent usage. A significant reduc­tion in unit operating cost resulted from these benefits. This paper quantifies the above benefits in a format accept­able to both metallurgists and accountants by integrating the findings in a techno-economic perspective.

The metallurgical processing industry is in the midst of a hydrometallurgical revolution with mining companies looking for low cost, energy efficient and environmentally friendly technologies for processing sulfide ores and concentrates. The Intec Copper Process is one of the most advanced of these technologies and has the potential to greatly change the way copper concentrates are treated in the future. Specifically, the Intec process has the ability to be built on a small scale and at mine sites while being much more economic than conventional smelting. Intec Copper has constructed a I tonne of copper per day demonstration plant in Sydney, Australia designed to verify metallurgical and operational performance. This paper will describe the process in more detail and provide preliminary results of the process based on the plant's performance. It will also compare the Intec Copper Process with a few of the competing technologies and evaluate the relative economic merits of Intec.

New global industry standards and regulatory changes regarding mining tailings management are driving installation of tailings filtration plants to decommission existing tailings dams and implement dry stacking. Target of this project was to reduce ultrafine slime tailings deposition. Previous investigation at Samarco concentrator has showed a 35% decrease in tailings filtration throughput when feeding a mix of 95% flotation tailings with 5% slime tailings (compared with 100% flotation tailings), also worsening geotechnical aspects such as material workability during dry staking. Industrial trials using a proper filter aid at tailings filtration plant feeding a mix of 94% flotation tailing and 6% slime tailing (equivalent to 30% of total slime generation) have provided filtration performance maintenance (throughput and cake moisture), and dry stacking the dewatered material. Results achieved will enable life expansion of existing slime disposal structures, as well as potential life of mining extension. Furthermore, reagent chemistry influence is discussed by the light of geotechnical aspects, which has been showing improved KPIs, such as workability, compressibility and permeability.

However, there are still limitations that must be improved, mainly, the problem of carry over from one phase to the other and the losses of organic reagent associated with the crud formation. These are problems that our company has been taking care, solving them with high efficiency and low costs, allowing important increases in the copper output of our plants and capital savings by means of the optimization of the use of nonproductive units in the SX plants.

This paper is a review of technological progress in mining geophysics during the past decade. This has been the most significant period in the history of mining geophysics. Among the already existing; techniques, instruments for ground -magnetic and electromagnetic prospecting, were developed that are more, portable and faster to operate. Induced polarization equipment came into widespread use. Airborne instruments of various types became available and were used to survey large areas. Drillhole instruments were developed and have had some use, and it is to be hoped will be used to a greater extent in the future. Two revolutionary new methods, the AFMAG and INPUT, were developed. The wisdom of attempting to cover such a broad field in a single paper might be questioned. There is the inevitable problem that each topic must be discussed very briefly. However, while papers describing individual instruments have appeared, many have yet to be described in the technical literature. The evolution of the ground magnetometer and electromagnetic instruments has not been discussed. It is only recently that a review article has appeared on airborne EM. The existence of review literature on some topics has meant that they are given less emphasis in this review than those topics inadequately covered. It will also be observed that stress is laid on "chose instruments that are generally available to the mining industry rather than those developed by individual exploration companies for their own use.

It is fundamentally important to evaluate bauxites in a realistic, commercial way on the basis of the processing technology both for the supply of existing alumina plants and for the designing of new ones. The evaluation system developped by ALUTERV-FKI consists of chemical, mineralogical, texture and technological testing. The commercial value of bauxites is basically determined by their available alumina content and the caustic soda consumption required for their processing. However, their contaminants have to be taken into consideration, too. The commercial value of bauxites also depends on the processing technology and their possibly unfavourable chemical and mineralogical composition can be /at least partially/ compensated by R&D efforts. The selection of the optimum processing technology and the effects of further developing the same are demonstrated on monohydrate bauxites containing goethite and carbonates. Some of the technological solutions /desilication or deironing of bauxites, hydrothermal treatment of the digestion residue / make at the same time possible the complex processing of the bauxites, the profitable utilization of their main components.

This article aims at highlighting the importance of technological innovation, namely the potential use of Virtual Reality (VR) technology, as a Sustainable Development Indicator for the minerals industry. Nowadays, VR is regarded as a mature technology for real world representation, and it has been already applied in various domains such as architecture, topography, aeronautics, medicine, and lately in the process industry. Several industrial sectors already use VR tools, as the car industry for improving car ergonomics and design and the aviation industry for both pilot and maintenance crew training. It is well known that the mining industry, as well as the process industry, requires people to work in hazardous environments and situations, often inadequately trained owing to limitations in time and resources, building thus the potential for minor or major accidents.

A conference attended by a limited number of invited participants was held last September in Denver under the auspices of the Underground Construction Research Council of ASCE funded by the National Science Foundation (RANN) to explore the problem of accelerating the transfer of advanced geophysical technology, used principally in the petroleum exploration industry, into more effective and widespread use in subsurface investigations for underground construction. There are technological problems, but technical difficulties and unfavorable ratios of benefits to costs are not the major obstacles. The problem centers on the complex way in which potential net benefits are translated into effective incentives to innovate for each actor in the complex web of individual, corporate and institutional entities involved in the planning, designing, building, funding, operation and ownership of major underground construction projects. The entities responsible for site investigation, design concepts and specifications do not directly bear the risks of unanticipated costs and failures, nor directly gain from savings. The conventional unit-price construction contract is strongly implicated in blocking innovation. Problems of risks and incentives, more than technical feasibility, must be solved before large investments in technical adaptation and adoption can occur.

"Located in the state of Colima, Peña Colorada is one of the largest iron ore operations in Mexico. The project is owned in equal parts by ArcelorMittal and Ternium. Though boasting a production capacity of 4.1 Mt/a (4.5 million stpy) of concentrate per year, Peña Colorada is faced with declining ore grades. In order to respond to this situation, Peña Colorada had to expand production even further. This expansion created various challenges that were overcome by the adoption and application of new technology. Examples of these technological innovations are discussed in detail in this article and include improvements in geo-modeling, mine planning, and mine operations. The successful implementation of these technologies paid for itself many times over, and has led to significant improvements in production and performance, while lowering the operating costs and reducing the variance between planning and execution.Project overviewPeña Colorada is a mining company that produces about 30 percent of the iron ore in Mexico. This project generates about 1,200 direct jobs and 3,000 indirect jobs, making a significant contribution to the local economy. Similarly, Peña Colorada invests in its local communities through numerous educational programs, scholarships, university agreements, social development, environmental agreements, etc. Peña Colorada’s operations consist of an open pit mine located in Minatitlán and a pellet plant located in the port city of Manzanillo, as shown in Fig. 1. Technological innovationsMost mining projects around the world typically follow the logic of “mining the next best ore.” Consequently, head grades tend to decline over the life of the mine. In the case of Peña Colorada, a decline in head grade combined with a decline in iron ore prices forced the operation to adapt to a new business environment and adopt new technologies to face these challenges. However, the first step along this process was to increase the confidence and reliability of the resource model. This task involved additional drillhole campaigns coupled with more detailed modeling techniques. Once the block model was completed, new optimization studies and production schedules were evaluated with new optimization tools that improved many aspects of the mine plan. The Peña Colorada block model has undergone 3 expansions to reflect additional information not available in the past. The model has expanded to the East and Southwest. The latest model expansion increased the total number of benches to 98 as a result of positive exploration results. Similarly, new geotechnical studies were prepared, which provided new guidelines for pit slope design, and new technology was implemented to monitor ground movement and slope stability. The greatest threat is clearly the inroads of fiber optics on the traditional market for copper in communication cable. Opportunity areas identified include heat pumps, solar power and heat, desalination, electric vehicles and others. The overall impact of new technologies on copper is expected to be modestly positive if adequately encouraged by effective R&D.

For many years, the combined efforts of machinery manufacturers and mine operators have endeavored to achieve greater productivity from the men involved and the machinery and capital invested, by developing methods to drill blast holes more effectively. Obviously, this means much more than simply developing a drill that will drill a single hole faster. Considerable attention over these years has also been given to methods of carrying and positioning the drilling machine on versatile jumbos, whereby the man's time can he better utilized by the faster drilling machines. Likewise, the art of blasting to utilize the holes that were drilled to achieve the maximum amount of fragmented ore and the methods of moving the broken ore have also progressed. But each phase of the production cycle just described must be made to balance with the other phases of the work. Obviously, major breakthroughs in only one phase don't always generate more "rock in the box" per manshift. Yet, through the persistent effort of the machinery developers and the researchers, the progressive attitudes of mine managers, backed by corporate capital investments, and battle after battle at the operating level, progress is made. Then, if the innovated system is good enough to "stick", in a few years it becomes the system that the newer method must replace, after the same repeated struggle. This is the situation that many mine operators find themselves in today, Looking at their production cycle, which is assumed to be efficient and balanced between drilling, blasting and materials moving capabilities, they tend to guard any visable disruption of the balance of that day's production, and many would prefer to maintain the status quo indefinitely. 5.1 TECHNOLOGY FOR INJECTING GROUT INTO BOREHOLES The grouting of fractured rock aquifers is carried out in separate stopes' whose size is determined by the hydro¬stratigraphy and the hydrogeologic properties of the rocks. The number of grouting stopes required depends on the number of intervals in the hydrogeological section. Each grouting stope can include one or several aquifers. Com¬bining several water-producing strata into one stope is pos¬sible only when the values of their permeability coefficients are very similar. In order to achieve efficiency, as many aquifers as possible are included in each stope. In practice, the length of a grouting stope in a borehole usually ranges within 10 to 40 m, but occasionally up to 100 m or more. When conducting grouting operations through boreholes drilled from the face of underground workings, the stope's size can be determined by the thick¬ness of each fractured zone (fault) or by the length of the hole if the entire rock is fractured. Injecting grout into separate intervals of fractured rock can be done from the bottom to the top with ascending stopes or from the top to the bottom with descending stopes. Injection from bottom to top is always preferred. Injection also can be accomplished in separate fractured permeable horizons in the section. The STG integrated grouting method is based on the use of packer and injection equipment and technological schemes that facilitate injection in highly isolated fractured aquifers. For this purpose STG has developed a standard series of packers. 5.1.1 INJECTING GROUT THROUGH BOREHOLES DRILLED FROM THE SURFACE Grout can be injected according to one of four techno¬logical schemes depending on the depth of the fractured aquifers, their hydrogeologic properties and the availability of grout injection equipment if the area is remote (Fig. 43). In the first and most preferred technological scheme (1), the grout is injected from the bottom up with ascending stopes. When this scheme is employed, grouting holes are drilled to the entire projected depth based on the field investigations injection tubes is installed above the top of the first hydrostratigraphic unit to be grouted. This scheme al¬lows the grout to be injected only into the permeable stra¬tum or strata isolated by the packer near the bottom of the hole; it precludes the need to clean or redrill the hole before injecting grout into the next overlying stope. This ascending stope scheme is preferred because of its simplicity and ef¬ficiency. It is used in most of the grouting of saturated fractured rock for the purpose of isolating aquifers while excavating deep mine shafts in the USSR. The second technological scheme (II in Fig. 43) injects the grout in sequence from top to bottom with descending stopes. Injection under this scheme is accomplished through the hermetically-sealed mouth of the hole. It is most advis¬able to grout with descending stopes in saturated fractured rock wherein the aquifers constitute thick networks of frac¬tures. Under these conditions it is practically impossible to drill a grout hole to the entire depth of the underground workings due to the large production rate of ground water. In conducting isolation operations with descending stopes, additional work (relative to ascending stopes) is necessary to drill out the grout in order to create and inject the next stope. As a result, the total amount of drilling required to drill out grout can even exceed the volume of drilling of original rock. Consequently it is advisable to use this inefficient scheme only for injecting grout into holes that contain prolific frac¬tured aquifers at depths less than 150 to 200 m. The third and fourth technological schemes (III and IV in Fig. 43) are used in the selective grouting of separate aquifers. For example, these methods would be applied when a grout hole is drilled to its entire depth, wherein grouting of the upper aquifers must be done first so that the sinking of the first shaft can begin prior to deeper grouting. The third technological scheme is used for the selective injection of grout into an aquifer with a thickness of up to 5 m. For this work the DAU-1-2 removable dual packer is installed. It is lowered into the borehole on an injection pipeline. For aquifers with thicknesses of more then 5 m, the selective injection of the grout is carried out according to the fourth technological scheme; a combination of the DAU-2 hydrodynamic plug and the DAU-1 packing device is used. In order to implement this injection scheme, the DAU-2 hydro-dynamic plug is installed at the bottom of the fractured aquifer and the DAU-1 packer is installed at the top of the aquifer.

"The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) National Personal Protective Technology Laboratory (NPPTL) is leading an effort to develop the next generation of self-escape breathing apparatus for egress from confined spaces in emergency scenarios. A backpack style closed-circuit mine escape respirator design was one configuration explored as part of the research imperative directed by the 2006 MINER Act. Stakeholder feedback from MSHA and at the NIOSH Breathing Air Supply Partnership Meeting indicated a smaller belt worn unit that does not sacrifice performance is desirable. This paper outlines some further technology advancements that may be investigated toward developing such a small-sized respirator. Technologies being considered are novel chemicals for improved carbon dioxide (CO2) absorption and oxygen (O2) production, eliminating a dedicated CO2 scrubber by incorporating its function in the spaces of the respirator’s breathing loop and storing O2 in a liquid form with long standby capabilities. When these technologies are applied to a future design, there is the possibility of having an escape respirator that can be belt worn and capable of being certified to 42 Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) Part 84 standards, including sub-part O for escape purposes including mine escape. BACKGROUND NIOSH NPPTL has a Research and Development effort to provide mine workers with state-of-the-art breathing air technologies to comprehensively support initial and continued self-escape, refuge alternatives, and rescue needs, resulting from mine emergencies. As part of this R&D effort, NIOSH invested in the development of a next-generation closed-circuit mine escape respirator (CCMER) which would be compliant with NIOSH’s respirator standard requirements, 42 Code of Federal Regulations Part 84, including sub-part O. The design features of the CCMER also address the MINER Act’s requirements for transitioning between devices without the need for doffing the initially donned device. It would also allow for improved protection when using voice communications with a donned device ."

Cyanidation processes for the extraction of gold or silver frequently involve the processing of sulfur-containing solids which react with cyanide to form thiocyanate. The formation of thiocyanate is an undesired side-reaction, and in many cases thiocyanate formation results in a prohibitively high cyanide consumption. With the increasing number of gold and silver mining projects which involve the processing of sulfide ores or concentrates or which utilize a biological sulfur oxidation process, more attention has been focused on minimizing thiocyanate formation and in treating solutions to eliminate toxicity associated with thiocyanate. Though not yet commercially applied, there are several technologies available to recover cyanide from thiocyanate to both reduce tailings toxicity and allow the reuse of cyanide otherwise lost to thiocyanate formation. This paper presents an overview of technologies available for recovering cyanide from thiocyanate along with estimated operating costs for the technologies. Pilot testing data suggests that in some cases, cyanide can be recovered from thiocyanate for approximately the same cost as newly purchased cyanide.
