Information and Communications Technology (ICT) is defined as ‘The goods and services that support the electronic display, processing, storage and transmission of information’. Early in 2002 the South African Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) commissioned a study into the diffusion and adoption of ICT in eight sectors of the economy. The platinum mining Sector was one of these. The key findings presented in this paper are based on the platinum sector component of that study. The paper examines the theoretical basis behind technology transfer and innovation diffusion and presents the results of an ICT diffusion survey carried out in the South African platinum mining sector. ICT is shown as the modern day technological tool which is an accelerator of economic development. The current state of ICT diffusion in the platinum mining sector is defined and projections for the near future are given. Recommendations which will ensure smooth and full adoption are presented and justified.

A theoretical model based on DFN models and 2D DEM numerical modelling has been developed for evaluating the rock mass mechanical properties. The description of the methodology is non-site related and can be applied in any site for this type of characterisation. The methodology was developed in the frame of the Site Investigation programmes for a Deep Repository for spent fuel in Sweden, and validated on sets of data coming from the Äspö Hard Rock Laboratory. Un modèle théorique base sur des modèles probabilistiques de réseaux de fractures et sur un modèle numérique DEM 2D a été développé dans le but de déterminer les propriétés mécaniques de la masse rocheuse. La méthodologie développée peut être appliquée à tout type de site pour ce genre de caractérisation. Le modèle a été élaboré dans le cadre des programmes de recherche d’un site d’enfouissement des déchets nucléaires en Suède, et validé par une application au laboratoire de recherche souterrain à Äspö. Ausgehend von DFN-Modellen und 2D DEM numerischen Modellierungen wurde ein theoretisches Modell für die Auswertung von mechanischen Eigenschaften von Fels entwickelt. Die Methodikbeschreibung ist nicht standortspecifisch sondern kan überall für diesen Typ von Standordkarakteriserung angewendet werden. Die Methodik wurde in Schweden im Rahmen der Standortuntersuchungsprogramme für die Endlagerung von verbrauchten Brennelementen entwickelt und ist mit Hilfe von Daten des Äspö Hard Rock Laboratory validiert worden

During the last few years a large number of pillars in different mines were investigated. Pillar conditions were evaluated using subjective, empirical, geophysical and numerical methods. A critical comparison of the different methods showed some interesting coherence. This paper concentrates on experiences using the p-wave velocities as an indicator of pillar conditions. Während den letzten Jahren wurde eine große Anzahl von Bergfesten in verschiedenen Bergwerken auf ihren Zustand hin untersucht. Hierzu wurden subjektive, empirische, geophysikalische sowie numerische Methoden angewandt. Dieser Vortrag beschäftigt sich mit den Erfahrungen beim Einsatz der p-Wellengeschwindigkeit zur Beschreibung des Festenzustandes. Le condition géotechnique d’une grand nombre des piliers des mines souterraines différentes sont examinées ces dernières années. On a appliqué des méthodes subjectives, empiriques, géophysiques et numériques. Ce rapport occupe aux expériences avec l’application de la vélocité des ondes de compression pour tracer le condition des piliers.

On the basis of laboratory test results a comparison of various parameters (unconfined compressive strength, CERCHAR and LCPC abrasivity indexes, mineralogy) is presented and discussed in order to outline certain correlations between them. Samples cover a wide range of lithological types coming from various sites of tunnels. A partir de résultats d’essais de laboratoire, une comparaison de divers paramètres (résistance à la compression simple, indices d’abrasivité CERCHAR et LCPC, minéralogie) est présentée et discutée dans le but d’en tirer certaines corrélations. Les échantillons couvrent un large éventail de types lithologiques provenant de plusieurs sites de tunnels. Basierend auf Laborversuchen, werden verschiedene Gesteinseigenschaften (Druckfestigkeit, CERCHAR und LCPC Abrasionsindexe) präsentiert und Korrelationen aufgezeigt. Die untersuchten Proben verschiedenster Lithologien stammen aus mehreren Tunnelprojekten.

For tunnelling in poor and heterogeneous ground a reliable on-site short-term prediction is required to allow a safe and economical construction. With the use of absolute displacement monitoring data and advanced software for evaluation of the data in combination with a routine update of the geological model a considerable increase in the reliability of the short-term prediction could be achieved. The paper deals with theoretical considerations, numerical studies and case histories from alpine tunnels in heterogeneous rock. Tunnelbau in schlechtem und heterogenem Gebirge erfordert auf der Baustelle eine verlaessliche Kurzzeitprognose, um ein sicheres und wirtschaftliches Bauwerk gewaehrleisten zu können. Die Verwendung von absoluten Verschiebungsmessdaten und deren Auswertung mit Hilfe von hoch entwickelten Softwareprogrammen in Kombination mit einer laufenden Aktualisierung des Gebirgsmodells ermöglicht eine erhebliche Erhöhung der Verlässlichkeit von Kurzzeitprognosen. Dieser Beitrag beschäftigt sich mit theoretischen Ansätzen, numerischen Modellen und Fallstudien von Tunnelvortrieben in heterogenem Gebirge. La construction de tunnels dans la montagne hétérogène de faible résistance exige un pronostic fiable à court terme sur le chantier, afin de pouvoir garantir un ouvrage sûr et économique. L'utilisation des données de mesure de décalage absolues et de leur évaluation à l'aide de logiciels sophistiqués en combinaison avec une mise à jour courante du modèle de la montagne permet une augmentation considérable de la fiabilité des pronostics à court terme. Cette contribution présente des approches théoriques, des modèles numériques et de cas pratiques de progressions de tunnels dans des montagnes hétérogènes.

In the upper part of the planned location of the portal of a highway tunnel, there was a steep rock cliff with several unstable rock blocks. It seemed that the risk of those rock blocks to fall was very high. The cut-out to stabilize the rock cliff was monitored with various measuring instruments to prevent the sudden fall of the rock blocks. This paper discusses the measurement of acoustic emission and interpretation of its result during excavation of the rock cliff. We calculated displacements by integrating the accelerogram twice in terms of time, and demonstrated that slight displacements can be calculated from the measured AEs. Dans la partie supérieure de l’emplacement prévu pour le portail d’un tunnel autoroutier, il y avait un escarpement rocheux raide avec plusieurs blocs rocheux instables. Le risque de chute de ces blocs semblait très élevé. Lors de la coupe pour stabiliser l’escarpement rocheux, le suivi a été effectué avec différents instruments de mesure pour éviter la chute brutale des blocs rocheux. Cette thèse présente les mesures d’émission acoustique (EA) et l’interprétation de leurs résultats pendant l’excavation de l’escarpement rocheux. Nous avons calculé des déplacements en intégrant l’accélérogramme deux fois par rapport au temps, et montré que de petits déplacements sont calculables à partir des EA mesurées. Im oberen Teil des geplanten Ortes des Stollenmundes eines Autobahntunnels gab es einen steilen Felsen mit mehreren instabilen Felsenblöcken. Die Gefahr schien sehr groß zu sein, dass diese Felsenblöcke einstürzen können. Beim Abbau um die Stabilisierung des Felsens wurde das Monitoring mit verschiedenen Messinstrumenten zusammengestellt, um den plötzlichen Verfall der Felsenblöcke zu verhindern. Das vorliegende Papier diskutiert die Akustische Emission und die Auslegung deren Ergebnisse während des Abbaus des Felsens. Wir berechneten die Verschiebungen durch zweimalige Integrierung der Accelerogrammen in Bezug auf die Zeit. Die dargestellten kleinen Verschiebungen können aus den gemessten akustischen Emissionen berechnet werden.

Tests were conducted on samples of rutile, titaniferous slag and ilmenite; each sample was mixed with coke and chlorinated in a bubbling fluidized bed at 1000°C. Profiles of the rates of chlorination of species were constructed from chemical compositions of the bed residues at different durations. From the start FeO and MnO are chlorinated quickly and all but entirely in a fraction of the time it takes to chlorinate all the TiO2. When the level of FeO is significant, as in slag and ilmenite, FeO is chlorinated faster than TiO2is. In these oxides, there is an inverse relationship between the rates of chlorination of FeO and TiO2during this first stage; the relationship, moreover, correlates linearly with the initial percentage of FeO in the oxide. We identify three stages in the chlorination process; a first, in slag and ilmenite, when FeO is being chlorinated; a second, when TiO2is most readily chlorinated; and a third, towards the end, when the levels of TiO2are reduced to those of other species. The rates at which individual species are chlorinated are analysed in terms of their appreciation or depreciation with respect toTiO2

In over ninety per cent of mineral sand plants, the most commonly used equipment is the spiral concentrator. The tonnage treated over typical spiral plants can range from as low as 200 ton per hour up to 6 000 tons per hour. Due to the limited capacity of each spiral, plants consist of multiple spirals assembled into banks. The mixture of minerals present in the sand feed requires several spiral stages to achieve the desired mineral recovery. Due to the complexity of the spiral circuits, there are always some design and operating problems that present themselves in plants. These range from slurry distribution, spirals operating at incorrect design parameters and feed variations. The material being treated is difficult to maintain in suspension due to its high density, resulting in segregation and preferential flow in pipelines, distributors and sumps. The objective of this paper is to highlight common problems associated with spiral installations to designers and operators of plants. Practical solutions are recommended in order to prevent and minimize these mistakes in the design. These solutions may be used to improve performance on operating plants.

Determining the anisotropy of rocks has in the past been difficult and rarely attempted in engineering practice. Here we have developed a new practical methodology for measuring orthotropic anisotropy that requires only one hollow cylinder specimen to determine the anisotropy of a set, even when the directions of the anisotropic axes are unknown. Autrefois, la détermination de l’anisotropie des roches était difficile et elle a été rarement essayée dans la pratique de l’ingénierie. Voilà c’est nous qui avons mis au point une nouvelle méthodologie pratique pour mesurer le coefficient de conductibilité thermique de l’anisotropie qui exige un seul spécimen du cylindre creux afin de déterminer l’anisotropie d’une série, même si les directions des axes anisotropiques sont inconnues. Früher war die Bestimmung der Anisotropie von Gesteinen ein schwieriges Verfahren, das in der technologischen Praxis nur selten in Angriff genommen wurde. Wir haben hier eine neue praktische Methodik zur Messung der orthotropen Anisotropie entwickelt, bei der nur ein Hohlzylinder an Gesteinsproben benötigt wird, um die Anisotropie einer Reihe von Steinen zu bestimmen, selbst wenn die Richtungen der Anisotropieachsen unbekannt sind.

Early removal of the shaft reef is usually considered necessary on deep level South African gold mines to avoid damaging stress build-up associated with traditional shaft-protection pillars. In the case of the relatively shallow Beatrix Gold Mine it was largely motivated by early access to ore and the consequent earlier return on invested capital. A number of options were considered to protect the shaft from possible damaging stress changes and to minimise deformations in the shaft-reef area. Numerical modelling was used to evaluate the options and to quantify as accurately as possible the likely deformations to be accommodated by the shaft steelwork designs. The option chosen was a combination of strategically placed satellite pillars and yield pillars, and backfill. Following the mining of a small inner cut during the shaft sinking process, full-scale mining is progressing away from the shaft. Suitable instrumentation has been installed to monitor deformations associated with the shaft reef removal. Enlever rapidement le filon du puits est en général considéré nécessaire dans les galeries de fond des mines d’or sud-africaines pour éviter l’accumulation nuisible de contraintes associée aux piliers de protection de puits traditionnels. Dans le cas de la mine d’or Beatrix, relativement peu profonde, l’enlèvement était motivé en grande partie par l’accès rapide au minerai et par conséquent un profit plus rapide sur l’investissement. Un certain nombre d’options furent considérées pour protéger le puits contre les changements de contraintes potentiellement nuisibles, et pour minimiser la déformation dans l’aire puits/filon. La modélisation numérique fut utilisée pour évaluer les options et pour quantifier aussi précisément que possible les déformations probables que la conceptualisation du puits devrait prendre en compte. L’option choisie fut une combinaison de piliers satellites placés à des points stratégiques avec des piliers de protection, et terre de remblayage. Pendant le fonçage de puits une petite coupure intérieure fut exploitée, et maintenant l’exploitation à grande échelle, au-delà du puits, est en cours. Les instruments nécessaires ont été installés pour surveiller les déformations associées à l’enlèvement du filon du puits. Die frühe Entfernung des Riffschachtes wird normalerweise bei südafrikanischen Tiefbaugoldmienen als notwendig erachtet um den zerstörende Druckaufbau zu vermeiden, welcher mit traditionellen Schachtschutzpfeilern verbunden ist. Im Fall der verhältnismäßig flachen Beatrix Goldmine war es hauptsächlich vom frühen Zugang zum Erz und dem konsequenten frühen Rückfluß des investierten Kapitals motiviert. Eine Anzahl an Optionen wurde erachtet um den Schacht vor möglichen zerstörenden Druckänderungen zu schützen und Deformationen im Riffschachtbereich zu minimieren. Um die Optionen zu bewerten und mögliche Deformationen so genau wie nur möglich quantitativ darzustellen die von den Schachtstahlkonstruktionen aufgenommen werden müssen, wurden numerische Modelle verwendet. Die gewählte Option war eine Kombination aus strategisch plazierten exzentrischen Pfeilern und Schutzpfeilern sowie Hinterfüllungen. Nach dem Vortrieb eines kleinen inneren Einbruches während des Abteufens wird der Vollvortrieb vom Schacht weg vorgenommen. Um die Deformationen, die mit der Riffschachtentfernung verbunden sind zu überwachen, müssen geeignete Instrumentenausrüstungen installiert werden.

Changes in reductant and energy inputs which are required to adjust the slag composition in an ilmenite smelter to a higher or lower FeO content are calculated. The calculated changes are based on the assumption that solidification equilibrium with the freeze lining constrains the slag composition to follow a eutectic groove in the TiO2-FeO-TiO1.5phase diagram. Calculated equilibrium conditions along the eutectic groove are presented, and form the basis of the calculations. The inputs of energy and carbon need to deviate strongly from the steady-state values to adjust the slag composition. The inputs required at any given time depend on the desired rate of change of the slag composition, and the current slag composition. The steady-state relationship of a change in energy input of 5 kWh corresponding to a 1 kg change in carbon input also holds for the changed inputs during transient changes in FeO content. Anisotropic behaviours of OhshimaOshima granite were investigated by carrying out uniaxial compression tests, together with observations of microcracks under an optical microscope. The elastic modulus tensor of Oshima granite at 10 per cent strength,E10, were calculated using theoretically formulation of elastic modulus tensor in terms of the second-rank crack tensor for pre-existing open microcracks. Furthermore, with the assumption of orthorhombic elasticity, the nine moduli of Oshima granite E10were determined by uniaxial compression test. Twenty-onemoduli of samples, calculated without assuming any symmetry, also showed orthorhombic features. Direction of the symmetry axes agreed well with the orientation of preexisting cracks. Comparison of crack tensor-based formulation results with the experimentally determined one show that the anisotropy of elasticity of Oshima granite is caused by pre-existing open microcracks, not by pre-existing healed microcracks and also crack tensor formulation can be used, as a first-order approximation at least, to describe the anisotropy of Oshima granite induced by pre-existing open microcracks. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: Das anisotrope Verhalten des Oshima-Granits wurde mit Hilfe voneinachsigen Kompressionstests und durch die Betrachtung von Mikrorissen unter einem optischenLichtmikroskop untersucht. Das Elastizitätsmodul von Oshima-Granit bei 10 Prozent Kraft E10wurde berechnet, indem man die Formulierung des Elastizitätsmodultensors, ausgedrückt alsRisstensor zweiter Ordnung theoretisch auf bereits existierende Mikrorisse angewandt hat.Außerdem wurden die neun Module des Oshima-Granits unter der Annahme orthorhombischerElastizität E10mit einem einachsigen Kompressionstest bestimmt. Einundzwanzig Stichproben,die ohne die Annahme irgendeiner Symmetrie genommen wurden, zeigten ebenfallsorthorhombische Merkmale. Die Richtung der Symmetrieachsen stimmte mit der Orientierungbereits vorhandener Risse überein. Der Vergleich der Ergebnisse der auf dem Risstensorbasierenden Formulierung mit der experimentell bestimmten Formulierung zeigt, dass dieAnisotropie der Elastizität von Oshima-Granit von bereits vorhandenen offenen Mikrorissenverursacht wird, und nicht von vorhandenen vernarbten Mikrorissen, und dass dieRisstensorformulierung auch zumindest für eine Annäherung erster Ordnung benutzt werdenkann, um die durch vorhandene offene Mikrorisse induzierte Anisotropie des Oshima-Granits zubeschreiben. RESUME: Les comportements anisotropes du granit d’Oshima ont été étudiés en réalisant destests de compression simple, et en observant les microfissures au microscope optique. Le tenseurdu module d’élasticité du granit d’Oshima sous une résistance de 10 pourcents, E10, a été calculéen se servant de la formule théorique du tenseur de module d’élasticité basé sur le tenseur defissures de second ordre des microfissures ouvertes préexistantes. En outre, sur base del’hypothèse de l’élasticité orthorhombique, les neuf modules du granit d’Oshima ont étédéterminés par des tests de compression simple. Vingt et un modules d’échantillons, calculés endehors de toute hypothèse de symétrie, ont aussi montré des caractéristiques orthorhombiques. Ladirection des axes de symétrie correspondait bien à l’orientation des fissures préexistantes. Lacomparaison des résultats de la formule basée sur le tenseur de fissures avec les résultatsdéterminés expérimentalement montrent que l’anisotropie de l’élasticité du granit d’Oshimaprovient des microfissures ouvertes préexistantes, et non de microfissures préexistantes referméeset que la formule du tenseur de fissures peut servir, au moins comme première approximation, àdécrire l’anisotropie du granit d’Oshima marqué par des microfissures ouvertes préexistantes.

ABSTRACT: A three-dimensional elastic constitutive model for rock salt is proposed. This stress strain law takes into account the three phases of creep (transient, steady state and accelerated creep), dilatancy, as well as the failure and post failure behaviour. The model was implemented into a finite element program and validated on the results of laboratory tests and in situ measurements. A good qualitative and quantitative agreement with the test and measurement results is achieved. A stability analysis for an underground repository in rock salt is presented. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: Es wird ein dreidimensionales elastisch-viskoplastisches Stoffgesetz für Steinsalz vorgestellt. Mit diesem Stoffgesetz können die drei Kriechphasen (primäres, sekundäres und tertiäres Kriechen), Dilatanz sowie das Bruch- und Nachbruchverhalten erfaßt werden. Dieses Modell wurde in ein Rechenprogramm, das auf der Methode der finiten Elemente basiert, implementiert und an Ergebnissen von Laborversuchen und in-situ-Messungen validiert. Die Versuchs- und Meßergebnisse lassen sich mit diesem Stoffgesetz qualitativ und quantitativ gut nachvollziehen. Als Anwendungsbeispiel wird der Standsicherheitsnachweis für eine Untertagedeponie im Steinsalz erläutert. RÉSUMÉ: Cet article présente un modéle constitutive élastique/viscoplastique à trois dimensions pour sel gemme. Ce modéle comprend les trois stade de fluage (fluage primaire, secondaire et tertiaire), la dilatation, le comportement de défaillance et d'après défaillance. Il est implanté dans un programme de calcul aux éléments finis. À l'aide des essais laboratoire et des mésures in situ, le modéle a été validé. Les résultats des essais et des mesures concordent qualitatifs et quantitatifs aux résultats des calculations.

SUMMARY: The effects of blasting on structures are assessed on the basis of the maximum amplitudes of the occuring vibration velocities. If the standard values in the German Standard DIN 4150 are not exceeded, damages to structures are not to be expected. The estimation of the maximum vibration amplitudes is usually based on experience or on emperical formulae. However, a comparison of expected with measured values shows that these estimations are not conservative, particulary in case of small distances between blasting locations and structures. More reliable predictions are possible on the basis of numerical analyses, which simulate the three-dimensional propagation of waves with consideration of the geomechanical and geometrical conditions. In addition to the expected velocities, these analyses also allow the determination of stresses resulting from dynamic loading. If the dynamic stresses are known, the effects of blasting on structures can be predicted. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: Die Auswirkungen sprengbedingter Erschütterungen auf bauliche Anlagen werden in der Praxis auf der Grundlage der Maximalamplituden der auftretenden Schwinggeschwindigkeiten beurteilt. In der DIN 4150 werden Anhaltswerte angegeben, bei deren Einhaltung Schäden von Gebäuden nicht zu erwarten sind. Die Abschätzung dieser Schwing-geschwindigkeiten erfolgt meist auf der Grundlage von Erfahrungswerten oder empirischer Formeln. Der Vergleich der prognostizierten Werte mit Meßergebnissen zeigt jedoch, daß diese Ansätze insbesondere dann, wenn die Abstände zwischen den Sprengorten und den Gebäuden gering sind, nicht konservativ sind. Zuverlässigere Prognosen sind auf der Grundlage von numerischen Berechnungen möglich, in denen die räumliche Ausbreitung von Erschütterungen unter Berücksichtigung der geomechanischen und geometrischen Verhältnisse simuliert wird. Mit derartigen Berechnungen können die zu erwartenden Schwinggeschwindigkeiten und die aus der dynamischen Beanspruchung resultierenden Spannungen ermittelt werden. Dies ermöglicht Aussagen über die Auswirkungen sprengbedingter Erschütterungen auf Bauwerke. RÉSUMÉ: Les conséquences de vibrations résultantes d'explosions pour des bâtiments sont estimés dans la pratique à partir des amplitudes maximales des vitesses d'oscillation. Dans la norme allemande DIN 4150 des valeurs d'orientation sont données, avec l'observation desquelles de dommage à des bâtiments n'est pas à présumer. Ces vitesses d'oscillation sont estimés généralement à partir de valeurs d'expérience ou de formules empiriques. La comparaison des valeurs prédits avec des résultats de mesures montre cependant que ces hypothèses ne sont pas conservateurs, en particulier si les distances entre les lieux de sautage et les bâtiments sont petites. Des prédictions plus fiables sont possibles à partir de calculs numériques, dans lesquelles la dissipation spatiale de vibrations est simulée en considération de la situation géoméchanique et géométrique. Avec tels calculs les vitesses de vibration à présumer et les contraintes résultantes de l'effort dynamique peuvent être établies. Cela permet de constater sur les conséquences de vibrations résultantes d'explosions pour des bâtiments.

Methods of research and control of the intensity of gas inflow to undersoil layers, after the mines were abandoned are presented in the paper. Gas migration causes them to penetrate to lower storeys of buildings and earthen structures being a menace to people's health and life. The results of measurements of gas concentration in undersoil layers, gas emission to atmosphere and their accumulation in buildings on the territory of closed down mines are presented.

Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of M.Sc. (Chemical Engineering)degree Identification of non-linear systems can be a daunting task and in the process industries the problem is complicated considerably by the presence of noise from various sources, non-stationarity of the data and intermittence, such as observed in particulate flows. Traditional methods, such as frequency analysis and linear model-ling do not handle these systems well. Similar problems arise with the application of non-linear theory developed over the last few decades, where much of the analysis depends on embedding of the data in a phase space or pseudophase space, since these methods were not originally designed to deal with noisy systems. In contrast, singular spectrum analysis is a method which can be used to identify structure and distinguish noise from important information in multivariate data, such as the trajectory matrices of time series measurements. It provides an orthogonal basis onto which the data can be transformed, so that components of the time series can be investigated individually. With Monte Carlo methods, the components can be compared with those from linear surrogate data in order to identify possibly non-linearities in the data. In this paper, this versatile technique is briefly explained and illustrated by means of case studies.

GIS documents are of great interest for a quick and low-cost determination of areas endangered by rockfalls. They allow (i) the detection of potential instabilities from steep slopes and cliff areas, and (ii) the preliminary estimation of potential run-out areas by means of a so-called cone method. After the presentation of the tools used to compute these areas, the paper focuses on two methods developed for a preliminary hazard mapping, one at regional scale and the other at local scale. Mittels GIS-Dokumenten können von Steinschlag bedrohte Gebiete schnell und kostengünstig ermittelt werden. Die sogenannte Kegelmethode erlaubt die Erkennung potentiell instabiler Zonen von Steilhängen und Felswänden sowie eine erste Einschätzung der möglichen Reichweiten. Nach der Vorstellung der zur Berechnung der bedrohten Gebiete benötigten Hilfsmittel stellt der Artikel zwei Methoden zur vorläufigen Gefahrenkartierung in lokalem und regionalem Maßstab vor. Les SIG sont très intéressants pour une détermination rapide et peu onéreuse des zones affectées par des chutes de blocs. Ils permettent une détection des zones potentiellement instables et une estimation sommaire des zones de propagation des blocs par une méthode dite des cônes. Après la description des outils utilisés pour définir ces zones, l’article expose deux méthodologies élaborées pour un zonage préliminaire du danger, l’une à l’échelle régionale et l’autre à l’échelle locale.

Abstract Several zones with expansive rocks were encountered during construction of two tunnels of the water conduction system for the Chacabuquito Hydropower Plant, located in the Aconcagua river valley of the Chilean Central Andes Mountains, at elevation 1.075 m a.s.l., and 65 km north-northeast of Santiago. The expansive behavior was associated to three different geological features. Firstly with the crossing of important north-south trending faults, with montmorillonitic and caolinitic fillings. Secondly to the presence of zones of rock mass showing a penetrative presence of clay minerals (montmorillonite, illite and caolinite) and penetrative thin veins of ceolites. And thirdly to the hydrothermal alteration of the rock and the consequent generation of clay minerals (predominantly montmorillonite, sericite and minor caolinite). The geological and mechanical characteristics of the expansive rock domains, as well as the field and laboratory reconnaissance and characterization program, are described in the paper together with the bases for design and the guidelines for construction and definitive tunnels support. Resúmè Pendant l’excavation des deux tunels du système d’adduction d’eau pour alimenter la centrale hidroélectrique Chacabuquito, plusieures zones de rochers expansifs ont été découvertes. Ces tunnels sont dans la vallée du fleuve Aconcagua de la Cordillère des Andes du Chili Central, à une altitude aproximée de 1.075m s.m.n. et à 65km vers le nord-nord-ouest de Santiago. Cette conduite expansive est associée à trois différentes caractéristiques géologiques du massif rocheux. Un premier lieu, à l’intersection de plusieures zones de failles, d’orientation nord-sud et subverticales, avec remplissage de rochers désintégrés, montmorillonite, caolinite et sérite. En seconde lieu, a la présence de zones de rochers expansifs, avec des nombreux minces veines de céolite-calcite et aussi des minéraux argileux (montmorillonite, illite et caolinite). Et, dans troisième lieu, dût à la présence de zones d’altération hidrothermale du massif rocheux et la conséquente génération de minéraux de remplacement argileux (surtout sérite, montmorillonite et en plus petit degré, caolinite). The Hoek-Brown failure criterion is often applied to a wider range of rocks than the isotropic rock masses to which it is strictly applicable. This paper evaluates the patterns of defects in rock masses using spherical projection contour plots of samples of randomly-generated orientations and datasets from mapping of New Zealand closely-jointed greywacke rock masses. Two indices from the contour plots - the area within the 1% contour (A1%) and maximum concentration (Cmax) are introduced for distinguishing uniform (isotropic), random or regular defect patterns. The indices provide a potential extension to current guidelines on the use of the Hoek-Brown failure criterion. The paper also outlines kinematic checks to assess the influence of defect clusters on rock mass strength. Das Hoek-Brown Bruchkriterium, das strikte nur fuer isotrope Gefuege gilt, findet oft einen viel weiteren Anwendungsbereich. Diese Arbeit bewertet diverse Dispersionsmuster der Defekte einer Gesteinsmasse. Wir vergleichen in sphaerischer Projektion (1) Beispiele zufaelliger Orientierung von Defekten und (2) Felddaten ueber neuseelaendisache engstaendig geklueftete Grauwacken. Die Projektionen werden durch die Indices A1% (Flaechenanteil des 1%-Bereichs) and Cmax (Hoechstkonzentration) gekennzeichnet, welche isotrope, zufaellige und regulaere Muster unterscheiden und die aktuellen Richtlinien zum Hoek-Brown Kriterium ergaenzen. Wir testen ferner Defektgruppen der Gesteine kinematisch auf ihren Einfluss auf Massenfestigkeit. Le critère de rupture de Hoek-Brown est souvent utilisé sur une variété de roches plus étendue que les masses rocheuses auxquelles il est strictement applicable. Ce travail évalue la distribution des défauts au sein d'une masse rocheuse en utilisant une projection sphérique des contours d'échantillons d'orientations générées aléatoirement et de données de cartographie provenant de greywackes à joints rapprochés de Nouvelle Zélande. Deux indices de cette projection - la zone des contours en dessous de 1 % (A1%) et celle de concentration maximum (Cmax) sont introduites pour distinguer les répartitions uniformes (isotropes), aléatoires ou régulières. Ces indices fournissent une extension potentielle aux règles d'utilisation du critère de rupture de Hoek-Brown. Ce travail utilisent également les contrôles cinématiques pour évaluer l'influence des groupes de défauts sur la résistance de la masse rocheuse.

Putting out fires in faces is an extremely complex and dangerous operation from the technological point of view which sometimes is accompanied by human victims. The new technology of fire-extinguishing sets giving directly into a mining face has been developed at the DNTU in order to put out such kinds of fires. The technique presupposes an availability of special installation placed on ventilation and conveyor mining drift. In case of fire a special fire-extinguishing powder is delivered with the help of remote control into mining face. Subjects, allowing to determine powder delivering distance in the frame of mining workings are presented in the report. The given technology substantially increases safety of accident work which are carried out in case of fire.
