Part of the work of the Precious Metals Section is to conduct oretesting experiments on ores selected as representative of various mining districts or areas . The projects are authorized by the Metallurgical Division , and only those ores in which gold and silver or gold or silver constitute an essential part of the total values are assigned to the Precious Metals Section . Such ores include those containing the precious metals only as commercially important ingredients , as well as those containing base metals such as copper , lead , and zinc along with the gold and silver . In many instances the "ore " may be a tailing product of a grade good enough to warrant retreatment , or a concentrate for which it is desirable to develop a method of treatment to avoid the expense of shipment to a smelter . It is evident that in general the greater part of this ore - testing work is done according to standard testing procedure , such as cyanidation, amalgamation, gravity - concentration , and flotation , or a combination of these methods . The standard methods of conducting such tests have been outlined in previous reports of ore - testing studies . However , since the inauguration of this oretesting program 6 years ago , the ores submitted under authorization have become increasingly more refractory to simple methods of treatment. Consequently, a considerable number of the projects completed during the fiscal year 1941 have required an unusual amount of work and in some instances have developed into real research problems . The Bureau of Mines has devised and demonstrated a process for recovering Ni and Co from low-grade domestic laterites . The process consists of four mmaajjoorr steps : ( 1 ) reduction roast , ( 2 ) ammoniacal leach , ( 3 ) solvent extraction , and ( 4 ) electrowinning . Several solid - liquid separation steps are required that affect the economics of the overall process . In this study , two techniques for solid - liquid separation , centrifugation and thickening , were investigated . This report presents the results of ( 1 ) laboratory and pilot plant studies to determine parameters for sizing centrifuges and thickeners and ( 2 ) an economic study of the two techniques , based on the requirements of a commercial - size ( 5,000 - tpd ) laterite processing plant . Sizing and other equipment - related recommendations , based on data from the Bureau's studies , were obtained from commercial manufacturers . The costs of thickening and centrifugation , including all the unit operations affected , were determined by the Bureau's process evaluation group . The total operating costs for separation using the two techniques ( including depreciation on the capital cost of equipment ) were found to be quite close : $ 17.26 per ton of laterite for centrifugation and $ 18.15 per ton of laterite for thickening . For centrifugal separation , the greatest cost was found to be the initial capital cost for the separation equipment ; using thickeners , the greatest cost was for reagent recovery .

This report describes the preparation characteristics of the significant coalbeds in Russell County , Va . Almost 2 million tons of coal was mined in 1961 ; 75 percent of the coal was cleaned mechanically in preparation plants in the county . The coal of Russell County is ranked as medium- to high- volatile bituminous , contains small amounts of sulfur , and generally requires some cleaning to reduce the ash content to limits acceptable for metallurgical purposes .

When the disruption of gold mining stopped the usual source of siliceous flux needed by copper smelters , sandstone copper deposits in northern Arizona offered possibilities as a source of the flux during the war emergency . The Federal Geological Survey , while making a comprehensive survey of sandstone copper deposits , investigated the Warm Springs mining district in northcentral Coconino County in August 1943. A month later , J. H. Hedges , chief of the Tucson Division , Mining Branch , Bureau of Mines , examined the operations in connection with an application for an access road . Both investigations concluded that the district , as an emergency source of copper-bearing siliceous flux , had considerable merit , provided high prices for copper continued in effect . Early in 1944 , V. M. Ryan and S. B. Atherley requested assistance from the Bureau in exploring various deposits on their property . The Bureau / drilled 152 holes , aggregating 3,756 feet , on the Petoskey and Mackin groups of claims . This report is based upon churn drilling done under contract from October 7 to November 25 , 1944 .

Thorium and yttrium oxides were recovered from siliceous ores of the Powderhorn , Colo . , area . Processing comprised ( 1 ) acid curing and subsequent ( 2 ) acid baking , ( 3 ) leaching , and ( 4) solvent extraction of thorium , using a primary alkylamine , and yttrium , using di - 2 - ethylhexyl phosphoric acid . About 95 pct of the contained thorium and yttrium was recovered from ore containing 1.2 pct Th02 and 0.5 pct Y₂ 03. The thoria product was 99 pct Tho ; the yttria product was 77 pct Y₂ 03. A 150 - to - 1 concentration ratio was effected on the latter , but some contaminating lanthanon - group oxides remained .

To increase safety and productivity in mining , the potential uses and hazards of rigid foam were investigated by the Bureau of Mines Experimental Coal Mine . This research resulted in the development of chemical formulations , spraying equipment , and application procedures that permit safe and effective use of urethane foams for improving mine ventilation , for reducing weathering of mine rock and steel , for constructing seals in fire areas , and for thermal insulation .

For several years the writers have been studying various phases of the effect of air conditions in metal mines upon underground workers ; in 1918 a short study was made in certain hot and deep mines and brief reports were issued in the Engineering and Mining Journal ( August , 1920) and in the U. S. Public Health Reports (Vol . 36 , No. 4 , January 28 , 1921 ) . In 1921 a more extended study was made (also in hot and deep metel mines ) with intent to determine the limiting conditions imposed upon underground workers by the physiological effect of various air movements , temperatures , and humidities , with and without work . It is the purpose to publish a series of short papers on this later investigation , each paper to consider one particular phase of the work . The present paper deals with the effect on body temperature and pulse rate in still air as compared with moving air of temperatures from 90 to 100° F . and 100 per cent relative humidity, the subjects at rest .

Data assembled by the Bureau of Mines , coupled with requests from coal companies , have emphasized the desirability of establishing standardized specifications for brattice cloth with particular respect to durability and fireproofing . Brattice cloth is a canvas or other material , often covered with some fireproofing composition , which is used extensively in coal mining for temporarily deflecting air into pillar workings and maintaining ventilation at the working faces . These specifications will be established , it is planned , through a cooperative program in which the U. S. Bureau of Standards will make a series of tests of various brattice cloths treated with respect to fire- resisting qualities and the U. S. Bureau of Mines will continue to assemble field data on the use of brattice cloth . Plans now are being made for this cooperative work. Without attempting to make a complete survey , the Bureau of Mines has made preliminary studies and investigations , and verious representative coal - mining companies have furnished detailed information . The information thus gained will be used as the basis for the cooperative investigation , but the Bureau of Mines would welcome additional information from mine operators on the character and weight of brattice cloth , conditions of use , durability , quantity employed and price . Such information should be sent to the Director , Bureau of Mines , Washington , D. C. The mine operator is interested in procuring at reasonable cost a brattice cloth with lasting fireproofing quality and of as great durability and strength as possible . There has been a lack of assembled data and knowledge regarding the subject , but the Bureau of Mines feels that this lack of knowledge may be overcome if the coal -mining companies will lend their hearty support to the cooperative investigation and submit information relative to the use of brattice cloth in their own properties . Information contained in this report is based on data obtained from coal operators in bituminous districts of Pennsylvania , Alabama , Utah , Indiana , Illinois , Colorado and Nova Scotia .

For many years , it has been the common practice at most copper mines to recover copper in solution in effluent mine water by precipitating the copper with scrap iron.4/ The technique employed varies from simply throwing scrap iron or tin cans into the waste ditches to passing the water through elaborate launder systems containing detinned scrap and baled cans . In general , a considerable amount of low - cost copper has been recovered that otherwise would have been lost . Iron consumption usually varies from 1 to 1-1/2 pounds of iron for each pound of copper recovered . The grade of the precipitate may be as much as 90 percent copper.4/ ,5/ Where the consumption of iron is materially greater , its cost is likely to be the determining factor of profit . In times of emergency, when the demand for scrap iron for remelting increases the cost of the iron sharply, and the supply of tin cans is not large enough to meet requirements , recovery of the copper might not be economical . The three principal reactions that take place when an acid mine water containing iron and copper salts in solution is brought into contact with metallic iron are : (1 ) Copper is precipitated and an equivalent amount of iron is dissolved , CuSO4 + Fe Cu + FeSO4 ; ( 2) ferric salts are reduced to ferrous salts , Fe2 (SO4 ) 3 + Fe = 3FeSO4 ; and (3) the free acid in the solution reacts. with metallic iron to produce ferrous sulfate , H2SO4 + Fe = H2 + FeSO4 . = Because of the reported high.consumption of iron (5 to 6 pounds per pound of copper precipitated ), when copper in water from the Hornet mine of the Mountain Copper Co. ( California ) was precipitated upon scrap iron , a series of tests was made to determine . the . optimum treatment, time , and consumption of iron .

In an effort to establish a highly productive mechanized mining system for anthracite beds pitching between 10 ° and 20 ° , for which conventional mobile equipment is not adaptable , the Bureau carried out an experiment in longwall mining using an Anderton- type drum cutter loader and friction - type yielding steel roof supports . The roof- support system proved to be inadequate for breaking the overhanging roof at the break line supports , with the result that the roof broke over the solid coal . The accompanying subsidence destroyed the continuity of the roof in the work area , and the project was discontinued .

Tests were made at the Government Fuel Yard , operated at Washington , D. C. by the Bureau of Mines , Department of the Interior , in order to determine and improve the adjustment of the carburetors on the trucks used for transporting coal from the Fuel Yard to the different Government buildings in Washington . The tests were made possible through the hearty cooperation of G , S. Pope , engineer in charge of the Fuel Yard . Joseph Burrows and A. E. Foote of the garage department assisted during all the tests and supplied information on the mileage obtained by the trucks for the months preceding and succeding the time the tests were made . The Mack trucks used range in capacity from 2-1/2 to 7-1/2 ttoonnss .. The majority of the carburetors were Stromberg G- 3 type , as shown in Table 2. During the winter months , when the demand for coal is heavy , from 30 to 35 trucks are used . At the time the tests were made , only about ten of the trucks were in daily use , owing to the small demand for coal during the summer months , and scarcity due to labor conditions . Samples of the exhaust gas were taken on the trucks kept in service for summer hauling in order to determine the carburetor adjustment as used . Changes were then made to a more economical adjustment wherever possible , without sacrificing flexibility of operation and power . In every case the adjustments were maintained for maximum power , but were adjusted to the leanest position to give that power . In all but one case the carburetors were found to be adjusted too rich for maximum power and economy . These results are considered in detail in a later part of this report .

Material used for flame safety lamp gauzes should possess the following qualities: (1) mechanical strength, (2) resistance to corrosion under service con- ditions, (3) a relatively high thermal conductivity, (4) a melting point above the ignition temperature of mine gas. Heretofore, three metals have been used for flame lamp gauzes, namely: steel, brass and copper. While each of these has the requisite qualities to some extent, none of them is an ideal gauze material. Copper gauzes lack mechanical strength, especiall, after they have been heated; brass and copper both have comparatively low melting points so that before the gas ignition is reached the gauze metal is attacked and oxidized under the action of the heat. Steel corrodes readily in damp atmos- pheres and if the lamp stands unused under these conditions for some time, the gauzes become unfit for service. Tests of these three materials have shown that steel offers the highest degree of safety. Manel metal, the natural alloy of nickel and copper, is practically noncor- rodible. Its relting point is approximately the same as that of steel. From time to time it has been suggested that this alloy might be a better gauze material than steel, since gauzes made of Monel metal should have all of the good qualities that steel gauzes possess and, in addition, would not corrode appreciably in ordinary mine atmospheres. One advocate of this use for Monel metal, the International Nickel Co., through their development engineer, Mr. Robert J. McKay, cooperated with the Interior Department, Bureau of ines, to the extent of supplying twelve sets of 30 mesh, Monel-metal gauzes for tests. Those gauzes were made up by the same lamp manufactur- er ho rade the steel gauzes used in the previous investigation. Being made by the same processes as the steel gauzes, these Manel-metal gauzes were needlessly given the same anti-rust coating that is always applied to steel gauzes to prevent any corrosion before the gauzes are used. In previous tests the Bureau of Mines had collected data as to the behavior of steel gauzes. In determining the value of Monel metal as a gauze material, it was planned to obtain similar data with Monel-metal gauzes, and thus make a direct comparison with the steel gauzes. Continuous flotation studies were made at a 50 - lb - per - hr feed rate to confirm the effectiveness of a batch - scale procedure for concentrating phenacite and bertrandite minerals from Mount Wheeler ores that contained , in percent , 0.47 , 0.78 , and 4.7 BeO . The procedure for selective froth flotation of the beryllium minerals from a gangue composed chiefly of calcite , fluorite , and mica comprised closely controlled preconditioning with sodium fluoride and sodium hexametaphosphate in a series of small mechanically agitated tanks and use of a mixture of oleic acid with kerosine , fuel oil , or turpentine as a collector . It was difficult to adapt the laboratory flotation procedure to continuous operation . The principal problem of achieving adequate conditioning to depress calcite and fluorite ultimately was resolved by conditioning in series . Thereafter , three ore samples of different grades treated on a continuous basis yielded concentrates containing from 12 to 25 percent Beo from these relatively complex and difficult ores . Recoveries , on a BeO basis , ranged from 75 to 88 percent . Losses , which primarily were due to incomplete liberation , probably could be lowered in a commercial operation .

In the No. 3 Sunnyside mine of the Utah Fuel Co. a disastrous fire started on the afternoon of August 17 , 1920 , the effects of which are still present in the mine . On account of the extent of the fire , the expense involved in reopening the mine and the opportunities afforded for determining the effects of depleted air , a description of it is worthy of record . This paper is a summary of a more complete report , prepared by the writers , which will be published by the U. S. Bureau of Mines .

The smoke problem means different things in different places . In the neighborhood of industrial plants , especially smelting plants and cement plants , the term " smoke " is applied to material discharged from these plants , consisting of a mixture of solid particles ( dust ) , fume which has condensed from vapors , and gases of various kinds that are produced in the operations . In the ordinary use of the word , however , " smoke" refers to the visible material which escapes from the burning of coal . White smoke usually owes its color to small drops of water which have condensed from the water vapor that it formed in the burning of coal . When smoke is black, the color is due to unconsumed particles of carbon and usually when the smoke problem is spoken of , it is this black smoke produced in the burning of coal that is referred to , Many inquiries in regard to smoke are addressed to the Bureau of Mines , and the following brief summary has been prepared as covering the usual questions . For references to the smoke problem in England , I am indebted to a recent interesting paper on this topic by David Brownlie .

Anthracite samples were oxidized with nitric acid to prepare products representing intermediate stages of oxidation . Similar oxidizing conditions affected different anthracites to varying degrees as characterized by peptization behavior with 0.1 N NaOH . Techniques used in attempts to separate and characterize the products included esterification , absorption spectrophotometry , sublimation , chromatography , electrophoresis , metal salt formation , and solvent extraction . Mellitic acid , either free or in the form of metallic salts , was identified in the acid- soluble products from 10 tests in which the anthracite was treated with nitric acid for periods varying from 24 to 1,000 hours . pentacarboxylic acid was also found in some products . Other benzene carboxylic acids were not present in amounts detectable by the methods used in this study . The acid- insoluble residue from nitric acid treatment varied significantly in solubility behavior toward different classes of solvents . The most effective ones tried included polar oxygenated solvents and pyridine . Infrared spectra of the extracted material indicated that similar compounds were extracted by the different solvents . Aliphatic amines and aniline peptized the residue and o- toluidine reacted with it . Organic material separated from the residue by peptization with dimethylformamide contained 1 percent ash , consisting of more than 50 percent zirconium .

Data were obtained by the writer from a number of the large coul-mine operators in Illinois, on the consumption and cost of timber used in their mines and the quality of the timber now being used as compared with former years. This information supplemented by comparative date for previous years published in bulletins of the filinois Coal Mining Investigation series, and other sources, is presented below. This survey is part of a cooperative study with the . S. Forest Service, of the mine timber situation, with particular regard to the economies to be derived by better selection, preparation, and storage of timber, and especially treatment with preservatives to prolong the life. Geo. S. Rice, chief mining engineer of the J. S. Bureau of Mines, under whose general direction the work was done, gave valuable advice and criticism. R. B. Miller, State Forester, contributed helpful data which he had recent- ly obtained in an independent study of the mine-timber situation in Illinois.

The response of minerals in magnetic separators is in accordance to dynamic rather than static magnetic susceptibility values . The dynamic value varies with respect to both passage speed through the separating field and time of exposure in a preliminary treatment field . Tests on 16 minerals and solids have demonstrated that both of these factors affect different minerals in different ways .

Because of the increasing demand for fluorspar , investigation of the deposits of the Gila district in Grant County , New Mexico , was undertaken by the Bureau of Mines in 1943 with the cooperation of the Federal Geological Survey . It was the purpose of the investigation to assist owners and lessees to develop their properties and to attempt to estimate ore reserves that might be available to supply a 300- ton mill that was under construction at Gila . Field work was begun June 14 , 1943 , and ceased August 16 , 1943. Seven veins were trenched and sampled .

In July 1921 , we were assigned by the U. S. Bureau of Mines to an investigation of milling methods in the Tri - State zinc district ( Missouri -Kaneas- Oklahoma district ) . The work has progressed without interruption , and about onehalf of the funds allotted for it has been expended . This preliminary statement abcut the nature of the work and the results so far obtained , has been prepared for the information of the operators , and through their assistance to insure the greatest possible progress during the remainder of the work . A general survey of the district was made , and many of the mining companies cordially offered the facilities of their plants for the investigation . The work was finally centralized at the plant of the 0. M. Bilharz Mining Co. Its manager , F. H. Gartung, and his successor , O. W. Bilharz , have been especially helpful , also the millmen at this plant and elsewhere have rendered assistance without which the work could not have advanced . The Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy , Rolla, Mo. , and the Miami School of Mines , Miami , Okla . , have given hearty cooperation . The Webb City Iron Works and the Joplin Supply Co. donated some necessary apparatus .
