The U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) conducted experiments to determine if training using a latent- image, three-dimensional (3-D) slide simulation exercise improved miners' ability to recognize roof and rib hazards. The effectiveness of this innovative type of classroom training was investigated by measuring workers' performance on a hazard recognition task. The study was unique in that hazard recognition skills were assessed in the workplace using actual coal mine roof and rib hazards. Results showed that training with a latent-image, 3- D slide simulation exercise significantly improved each subject's performance on the in-mine hazard recognition task. Further, the USBM researchers concluded that transfer of learning from the classroom to the workplace occurred.

This report describes the results of a field study conducted by the Bureau of Mines during 1956 and 1957 on manganese-and iron-bearing mineral deposits in the southern district of Aroostook County, Maine. The work was undertaken to determine the extent of deposits largely concealed under glacial drift and to obtain subsurface samples for manganese mineral identification and research in ore dressing and extractive metallurgy. The investigation was confined to the Westford Hill-Daggett Hill area in Hodgdon Township and to the Stewart prospects and vicinity in Linneus Township. Over 50 magnetic anomalies were mapped by magnetometric surveys in the Westford Hill-Daggett Hill area, Hodgdon Township. The largest anomaly, as outlined by the 1,000-gamma contour, indicates a deposit 3,200 feet long with a maximum width of 350 feet. The smallest anomaly measures about 10 feet wide by 25 feet long.

Frequencies of haulage-related accidents in metal and nonmetal surface mines for the years 1988 through 1990 were investigated and compared with those of non-haulage-related accidents. This study was part of the U.S. Bureau of Mines program to improve mining haulage safety. Data were obtained through the U.S. Bureau of Mines Accident Data Analysis (ADA) program. The chi-square test was used to compare frequencies of haulage-related and non-haulage-related accidents for each of the following variables: degree of injury, age, total number of years of mining experience, and shift time. Significance was determined for degree of injury between haulage-related and non-haulage-related accidents. Age of injured did not vary significantly between haulage-related and non-haulage-related accidents, but total number of years of mining experience was found to be significant. Shift time for the accident proved to vary significantly between haulage-and non-haulage-related accidents. Events causing injury for haulage-related accidents were tabulated, and the most frequent determinants of haulage-related accidents were identified. Accident descriptions for both fatalities and permanent disabilities were studied, and the primary causes of these accidents were identified. These findings suggest that haulage-related jobs are among the most dangerous when considering accidents experienced by all workers in the metal and nonmetal surface mining work force.

Although longwall mining productivity can far exceed that of room-and-pillar mining, the total methane emissions per extracted volume associated with longwall sections are generally higher than those for continuous miner or pillar removal sections. Increased face advance rates, increased productivities, increased panel sizes, and more extensive gate road developments have challenged existing designs for controlling methane on longwalls. Methane control research by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) recently examined a number of practices designed to maintain concentrations in mine air within statutory limits and consistently below the lower explosive limit. These included a reservoir modeling approach to predict methane inflows in gate road entries. The outputs sug­gested that emission rates in the gate roads decreased with the use of shielding boreholes and increased degasification time. Also, mining perpendicular to the face cleats liberated more gas into the mine workings, emissions were almost a linear function of Langmuir pressure and volume, and emissions were inversely related to sorption time constant. Subsequent simulations predicted changes in methane drainage using in-seam boreholes. The results showed that longer degasification times resulted in lower face emission rates. Premining degasification produced more methane than that produced during panel extraction, a fact attributed to the already decreased methane content of the coalbed. This work concluded that longer premining degasification periods would be more advantageous to the operator. The industry trend toward increasing longwall face width can produce increased methane emissions from the face due to a higher volume of cut coal on the face conveyor. Two methods were used to estimate face methane levels on longer faces. In the first method, segmented methane data were extrapolated for greater face widths. The second method estimated emissions contributions from the shearer, face conveyor, panel belt, longwall face, and ribs, and summed these for wider panels. Permeability changes in the gob behind the longwall shields were estimated using a NIOSH-developed numerical model. The results showed that permeability was highest near the edges and corners of the gob.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines and the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) are participating jointly in a research program to evaluate the strength characteristics and air-leakage resistance of various proposed seal designs for use in underground coal mines. The full-scale seals were constructed in the USBM's experimental mine at the Lake Lynn Laboratory, air-leakage tested, then subjected to pressure pulses of 20 psig or greater. bjected to pressure pulses of 20 psig or greater. In experiments prior to this study, seven seal designs using solid-concrete blocks were tested. Only the standard-type seal passed the explosion and air-leakage criteria. Tests also were performed on four seals constructed with low-density foam blocks. All four of these seal designs withstood the pressure pulse. In more recent studies, nine cementitious foam seal designs of varying thicknesses and densities were investigated. Six of the nine designs successfully survived the explosion overpressures. Six wood- block convergence seals also have been tested. The typical 3-ft-thick, wood-block seal design currently used in many coal mines did not maintain its integrity, in the absence of convergence forces, following the explosion test. Five modified wood-block seals successfully withstood the 20-psig pressure pulse. Based on these tests, three alternative seal construction materials, cementitious foam, low-density foam block, and wood, have been approved by MSHA for use in underground coal mines.

BACKGROUND A mine shaft is the lifeline to underground mines. Mine operators depend on safe, uninterrupted, and efficient movement of workers and materials. The shaft and hoisting system provides access to the network of openings used to recover the underground resource, provides vertical transport of miners and materials, and serves as an escapeway in case of an emergency. Accidents involving hoisting can be catastrophic. Such was the case in 1973 at the Markham Colliery in Derbyshire, UK when the conveyance overwound and fell to the shaft bottom, resulting in 17 deaths. Hoist and elevator machinery must meet the requirements specified in the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR), Parts 57 and 75. According to the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) data, many shaft-related accidents in the United States are associated with the hoisting cycle. MSHA statistics show that there were about 1500 shaft- related accidents in the 5-year period between 1992-1996. Most of these accidents resulted from the action, motion, or failure of the hoisting equipment or mechanism and involved movement of the conveyance which includes cages, skips, ore buckets, and elevators. A hoisting hazard may be characterized as an "unsafe hoist operating condition caused by insufficient or inaccurate information available to the hoist operator" (authors' quote). Earlier investigators have defined safety features and operating and maintenance standards for hoists, and reported on monitoring and control systems and sensors for hoists and conveyances [Farley, 1983; Ward, 19931. However, despite the considerable technological progress and hoisting control improvements in recent years, safety- related issues that require further investigation still remain. The hoist operator must constantly be aware of two important hoist-operating conditions: the position of the conveyance and the tension in the hoist rope. If this information is not available or is inaccurate, the hoist becomes unsafe. Current technology provides this information indirectly from sensors and indicators in the hoist room. However, unlike a building elevator hoistway, mine shaft hoistway problems often include: 1. poor ground conditions and excessive shaft wall and guide displacement; 2. rock bursts in deep mines (resulting in large rock movements and fragments blocking the hoist way); 3. water, ice, and salt buildup (impeding the smooth flow of the conveyance); 4. severe vibration from hoisting (resulting in loose guide support brackets, broken welds, or other alignment and conveyance mechanism malfunctions). The second issue relates to dynamic rope loads applied during normal winding, particularly during loading, acceleration, and stopping. Safety factors on wire rope are based on static load. They are artificially high to account for all cases of dynamic loads, even though the total load history on the rope (static and dynamic) during service is unknown. Therefore the tension, and thus the compliance with wire rope load safety factors, is unknown to the hoistman.

Workers using vibrating hand tools have the potential for developing health problems associated with repeated forceful actions and exposures to hand-transmitted vibration. Hand-arm vibration syndrome (HAVS) and other hand-arm system disorders have been associated with such exposures.1-2 To better assess health risks, comprehensive evaluations of these exposures must include quantitative assessments of hand-tool coupling forces; unfortunately, no standardized method for quantifying hand forces exists. Handle instrumentation may be ill-suited for some field environments. Psychophysical force-recall techniques may provide alternatives to handle instrumentation. A thorough understanding of the effects of vibration and other factors on force-recall accuracy and reliability is important before such methods are applied in risk assessments. Methods In this study, the effects of vibration and other factors on the accuracy of psychophysical force-recall were explored in two experiments. Twelve male subjects participated in the first experiment. The second experiment employed 20 participants (10 female, 10 male). In each experiment, participants applied specific grip and push forces to an instrumented handle mounted on a shaker system. Participants were exposed to sinusoidal vibration at frequencies that ranged from 0 Hz to 250 Hz. Three levels of applied force (low: grip = 15 N/push = 25 N, medium: grip = 30 N/push = 50 N, and high: grip = 45 N/push = 75 N ) and two levels of vibration magnitude (low: ANSI 4-8-hr limit and high: ANSI <0.5-hr limit)3 were examined. During the vibration exposure period, participants were provided with visual feedback while they attempted to “memorize” the applied grip and push forces. At the conclusion of the vibration exposure/force memorization period and a controlled rest period, the participants tried to duplicate the grip and push forces on a non-vibrating handle without the aid of visual feedback. The effects of different vibration frequencies, vibration magnitudes, and grip and push force levels were tested in a random order from trial to trial. Results Participants tended to overestimate grip and push forces. Depending on exposure conditions, error means ranged from 2 N to 10 N. The ANOVA revealed that force-recall errors for exposures between 31.5 Hz and 63 Hz were significantly higher than those at other vibration frequencies (p < 0.05). The frequency effect is depicted in Figure 1. Error means were greater when participants were exposed to the higher vibration magnitude (mean = 9.1 N, 95% CI = 8.2-10.1 N) when compared with the lower vibration magnitude (mean = 4.9 N, 95% CI = 3.9-5.8 N) (p < 0.05). Abandoned underground coal mine areas must either be sealed or ventilated to comply with federal mine regulations. Ventilation of these abandoned areas is often impractical due to roof falls and inadequate primary mine ventilation. If the area is sealed, a very complex ventilation system is set up. In which the gob "breathes" in and out due to barometric pressure fluctuations. The Gob Assistant is a computer program (for use on IBM compatible personal computers) which allows the prediction of air flows into and out of a sealed mine area. Gas flows with applicable control techniques are also modeled. This information is presented to the user who will decide which control technique, or combination of techniques will ultimately be applied. The Gob Assistant is an intelligent gob simulator that can reduce the guesswork involved in predicting the effects of sealing and control techniques before they are applied. This paper provides the fundamental principles upon which the Gob Assistant is based, verification of these principles, and an explanation of how these principles were integrated into the Gob Assistant.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines and the U.S. Geological Survey conducted a mineral survey of the Black Butte RARE (I area during the summer of 1981. The study area encompasses 17,800 acres [27.8 sq mi (7,233 ha)] along the course of the Black Butte River, 13 mi (22 km) southeast of Covello, California. No mineral deposits were identified by the U.S. Bureau of Mines during this survey. Assay results of samples taken in this area indicate only trace amounts of manganese, chromium, and nickel. No radioactive or fluorescent minerals were detected. No oil and gas, coal, or geothermal leases have been recorded for the study area.

"IntroductionInhalation of crystalline silica is often associated with the development of pulmonary disease (Ziskind et al., 1976). Recently, it has been proposed that freshly sheared silica .may have surface properties that make it more reactive with lung tissue than aged silica, and that this unique reactivity ·of freshly crushed silica enhances its pathogenicity. A recent study in our laboratory strongly supports this theory (Vallyathan, et al., 1988a; 1988b). We found that grinding of silica cleaves bonds in a silica tetrahedral lattice generating reactive free radicals sites on the surface of the silica particles. The presence of surface radicals on freshly ground silica was monitored by electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy. The ESR signal generated from fresh silica in air is characteristic of Si-0 and Si radicals. Evidence, i.e., the ESR signal after the addition of a spin trap (DMPO) and its sensitivity to ethanol, indicates that these silicon-based surface radicals can react with water to form hydroxyl radicals (OH). Results also indicate that these surface radicals make fresh silica more cytotoxic than aged silica; i.e., fresh silica causes more membrane damage as evidenced by hemolysis and lipid peroxidation. Therefore, the presence of reactive sites on the surface of freshly cleaved silica may play a significant role in its pathogenicity.If surface· free radicals are related to cytotoxicity, then screening dusts for the existence of such radicals may predict their relative pathogenicity. Since an ESR spectrometer is not available to many laboratories, the objective of this study was to develop a quick and simple technique to monitor the existence of reactive surface sites on dust. The technique chosen was the measurement of chemiluminescence using a liquid scintillation counter; i.e., an instrument which·would be accessible to most investigators."

Since the passage of the Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969, the Bureau of Mines has made many advances in mine communications. These efforts have resulted in the following developments and demonstrations: Surface-to-surface electromagnetic transmission of baseband voice signals through overburdens as deep as 600 feet. This transmission was achieved with equipment from the Interim Mine Rescue and Survival System Program, and demonstrated that baseband voice communications could be obtained through these overburdens in the absence of mine-generated noise; that is, when the mine power system was shut off, However, during mine operational conditions, the mine-generated noise proved to be so large that effective baseband voice communications to the desired depths could not be effected.

This report summarizes the results of laboratory investigations conducted by the Federal Bureau of Mines to obtain hydrometallurgical information on the dissolution of mercury sulfides from ores, flotation concentrates, and pure mercuric sulfides. Statistical methods were used to design the experiments and evaluate the resulting data. Studies demonstrated that cinnabar is readily soluble in sodium sulfide, partly soluble in potassium sulfide, and essentially insoluble in ammonium sulfide. Additions of sodium hydroxide or potassium hydroxide to sodium sulfide solutions increased mercury extraction slightly; when either was added to potassium sulfide or ammonium sulfide solutions, mercury extraction was equal to that of sodium sulfide. Tests at the Albany Metallurgy Research Center showed that sodium sulfide would completely dissolve chemically pure mercuric sulfide, more than 95 percent of the cinnabar in 5-percent mercury flotation concentrates, and 60 to 90 percent of the cinnabar in low-grade ores. The double-leach tests showed that potassium sulfide would dissolve over 90 percent of the arsenic in mercury-arsenic products and 1 to 10 percent of the mercury; then sodium sulfide-hydroxide solutions would dissolve 80 to 90 percent of the remaining mercury and 5 to 10 percent of the arsenic.

This three volume final report summarizes the activities and conclusions of this contract. The objective of the contract was to develop noise control modifications on a retrofit basis, for auger miner coal-cutting systems. Manuals were prepared to assist mine shop personnel in retrofitting the auger miner with these noise controls. Final Report Volume I - Details all vibration and acoustical tests conducted in develop¬ment of the noise controls. Final Report Volume II - Noise Control Modification Manual for the Jeffrey 100-L Auger Miner describes the various noise control modifications to the auger miner, along with fabrication procedures, cost and vendor information. Preliminary examination of the McCormick chromite property was made by the Federal Geological Survey and the Bureau of Mines during the spring and summer of 1943. In October 1943 an exploratory project was undertaken by the Bureau in cooperation with the Survey and was completed in February 1944.The urgent need during the war for high-grade lump chromite such as produced at the McCormick mine, was one of the pertinent reasons for the project. The McCormick mine is situated about 12 miles southwest of the town of Sonora, in the foothill belt of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, Tuolumne County, Calif. The chromite occurs as irregularly shaped lenses in masses of dunite contained in a steeply dipping, sheared, serpentinized zone of peridotite, near a contact with granodiorite.
