Lithium in the form of metal, salts, and alloys is particularly important because of increasing industrial uses resulting partly from wartime developments. Lithium carbonate and lithium strontium nitrate, which impart a brilliant red color to a flame, are used in pyrotechnics. Lithium chloride and fluoride are used in fluxes for welding aluminum to dissolve the oxide coating on the aluminum and prevent oxidation of the molten metal. Lithium carbonate is used in ceramics in raw alkaline glazes because of its unusual fluxing properties. The use of 9 to 12 percent lithium carbonate permits a marked increase in the amounts of alumina, calcium, and silica that may be Used and results in a more stable glaze with sufficient alkalinity to produce vivid copper blues and other typically alkaline colors. Lithium stearate is used as a grease in airplane engines because of its ability to withstand wide changes in temperature. In view of its great affinity for nitrogen, hydrogen, oxygen, sulfur, phosphorus, carbon, and silicon, lithium has an excellent scavenging action on molten metals. It forms stable nonmetallic compounds of low specific gravity or gases that are eliminated at pouring temperatures. Lithium is generally added to the melt in the form of a lithium-calcium alloy consisting of 50 percent of each ingredient or as an alloy of 98 percent copper and 2 percent lithium. The lithium-calcium alloy added to cast iron before pouring, acts as a scavenger and increases the fluidity of the melt. This alloy also is said to increase the corrosion-resistant properties of stainless steel alloys and to improve their polishing qualities.

"INTRODUCTION Investigation of the physical properties of electrolytic manganese and its alloys has constituted a part of the program of the Bureau of Mines for several years, and already extensive data have been reported. 3-14/ Heat-content measurements above 25° C. of pure manganese 15/ were completed recently at the Pacific Experiment Station of the Bureau, and the results obtained removed many of the inconsistencies in previously reported data. This paper reports heat-content data of seven manganese-copper alloys, varying in composition from 25 to 90 percent man-ganese. The alloys, obtained from the Salt Lake City Station, 16/ had been quenched from 850° C, and cold-worked. Without further heat treatment, heat-content measurements of each of these alloys were made at 100° or less temperature intervals from 450° to 850º C., as it was considered likely that any abnormal behavior of the specific heat would be found in this temperature range. Also, a portion of each alloy was heat-aged at given temperatures for periods of time thought sufficient to reach phase-equilibrium; then the heat-contents above 25° C. were determined at the aging temperatures. (Heat-aging was done at approximately 450°, 550°, 650°, 750°, and 850° C.)METHOD AND MATERIALSThe heat contents were determined by the ""drop"" method in a previously described apparatus. 17/ The calorimeter was cali-brated with electrical energy, measured in international joules, and the results were converted to the conventional thermochemical calorie by the relation, 1 cal. = 4.1833 int. joules."

The increasing demand for iron ores prompted the Bureau of Mines to investigate the sources of past production in Kentucky to determine whether reserves of usable ore still exist. Preliminary investigation showed that the holdings of the Rose Run Co. were the most promising, inasmuch as the deposit had not been exhausted by past mining and the property was near railroad facilities and but 80 miles from the blast furnaces at Ashland, Ky. The Bureau conducted a churn-drilling and sampling program to investigate the depth, thickness, and iron content of the ore beds so that they might be evaluated as a possible reserve of low-grade iron ores. The Rose Run area in Bath County, Ky., was explored by 74 churn-drill holes totaling 2,059.4 feet of drilling and 4 cuts and test pits. Fifty-seven drill holes and the four test pits penetrated the ore bed at an average depth of 22 feet. The bed had an average thickness of 2.54 feet. Analyses show that the calcium and magnesium carbonate content is more than sufficient to flux the silica and provides an excess that needs an admixture with other siliceous iron ores.

Radiotracer techniques were developed for stoichiometric studies of photochemical reactions associated with atmospheric smog formation. Stock blends of separate hydrocarbon and oxygenated compounds were prepared and calibrated. 14C-labeled reactants and products in reaction systems involving hydrocarbons and nitrogen oxides at the ppm level were analyzed for qualitative and quantitative data. Precision and accuracy of these methods developed by the Bureau were determined by replication and statistical treatment of data, and these methods are described.

During the period January 1, 1977 through July 31, 1977, 5 percent (264,000 tons) of U.S. capacity was closed due to power curtailments in the Pacific Northwest because of the shortage of water. During July, one plant in Tennessee cut production by 50,000 tons annually due to a power reduction by the Tennessee Valley Authority. Full capacity production was resumed at a West Virginia smelter during September. If demand for aluminum is strong it seems likely that aluminum supply during the remainder of 1977 and in 1978 will be tight. The price was increased 3¢ per pound to 51¢ per pound effective March 28, 1977, and by an additional 2¢ per pound to 53¢ per pound, effective July 5, 1977. New projects and expansion of existing facilities are planned by Australian aluminum companies over the next 2 to 3 years. The companies listed have committed themselves to spending approximately A$801 million: Alcoa of Australia Ltd. -New alumina plant at Wagerup, south of Perth. Darling Ranges bauxite is located near the proposed project. A$650 million. Coma 1 co Industries Pty. Ltd. -Increase bauxite mining capacity and upgrade or replace other facilities at its Weipa mines on Cape York Peninsula region of Northern Queensland. A$81 million. Alcan Australia Ltd. -Expansion program that will increase capacity of the Kurri Kurri aluminum smelter north of Sydney about 50 percent, and improvement of other facilities at the plant. A$70 million.

Epoxy and polyester-type resins were injected into coal-mine roof strata of the thick Freeport coal seam in Allegheny County, Pa., at test sites in roof that had been exposed several weeks, in newly exposed roof, and in strata over solid coal. Test results indicate that the method of strengthening bituminous-coal-mine roof by injecting a bonding material into the roof strata can be developed into a safe, efficient support system. If roof bonding will become a standardized method of roof support and reinforcement or if it can be effective when used with other types of roof support can be determined only by extensive experimentation in various coal beds. Observations and conclusions are shown at the end of this report.

From solution data obtained, the heat of formation of NdCls (c) was computed as -248,970 ±260 cal/mole at 298.150 K.

"The adsorption and wetting behavior of freshly ground and aged coals has been determined in the presence of a nonionic surfactant. The amount of surfactant adsorption changes with the concentration and ""age"" of the coal. The freshly ground coal has smaller amounts of adsorption at lower surfactant concentrations than the ""aged"" coal whereas at large surfactant concentrations, the order is reversed . In the latter case, more surfactant is adsorbed on fresh coal than on the ""aged"" coal . . It is proposed that at low concentrations, the surfactant adsorbs through both hydrophobic and hydrophilic interactions with the molecule lying parallel to the· surface, whereas at higher concentrations surface micelles form at the hydrophobic sites. The wetting behavior correlates well with the adsorption behavior.INTRODUCTIONNonionic surfactants have many applications in the coal and mineral processing industry. They can be used as dispersing agents to modulate flotation, flocculation and filtration of particulates (1). They can also be used to increase the wettability of hydrophobic solids such as coal and can hence be used as dust suppressants (2,3). Although the adsorption of representative nonionic surfactants such as Triton N-101 (an ethoxylated nonylphenol with 9.5 moles of ~thylene oxide and HLB equal to 13.4) have been studied extensively on substrates such as calcium carbonate (4), silica (5) carbon black (6) and graphite (7), very few studies are available for coals. Coals differ from other substrates with respect to two important characteristics: 1) coal are porous and 2) coals consist of a patchwork of hydrophobic and hydrophilic sites (8). Since the adsorption characteristics of a surfactant are influenced significantly by the nature of the substrate the characteristics of the coals must be taken into consideration."

[Fugitive Just is generated alone unpaved mire reads from intermittent equipment traffic. Typically, the majority of such traffic consists of trucks hauling either mine product or waste [rum the surface mime pit and/or the processing plant. Fugitive dust generated along these unpaved mine roads includes particles of all sizes which become airborne. The potential hazards include the deleterious effects to human health of inhaled dust, traffic visibility hazards and environmental impacts on the localized area by the larger-sized visible airborne dust. Two held surveys were recently conducted to quantify fugitive dust generation and dispersion from truck traffic on unpaved and untreated mine haulage roads For these surveys., airborne glow sampling was conducted at multiple sampling fixations away from an unpaved haulage road at a limestone quarry/plant and at a coal mine preparation plant lo measure the size characteristics, concentrations. and dispersive behavior of the dust cloud generated from truck traffic- Results show that at least 80% of the airborne Just generated by haul trucks was larger than 10 µm- Airborne respirable, thoracic, and total dust concentrations all decreased and approached background concentrations 30.5 in (100 feet) from the road This report describes the average and instantaneous peak dust levels that were measured tip to 30.5m (100 feet) Iron the haulage road. The Bureau of Mines conducted experiments using bench-scale apparatus to explore the effect of large changes in process variables on the yield and composition of the gases produced by passing 800° C steam through a fixed bed of Pittsburgh seam (hvab) coal. The total yield of combustible gases increased throughout the given range for the following variables: Superficial steam velocity increasing from 0.02 to 0.12 fps, pressure increasing from 1,000 to 6,000 psig, residence time increasing from 0 to 60 minutes, and temperature increasing from 800° to 900° C; however, a greater increase in the yield of hydrogen in comparison with the increase in yield of methane reduced the gross heating value of the gas to around 470 Btu per scf at conditions giving the maximum yield. Pressures of 1,000, 3,000, and 6,000 psig at 0.09 fps steam velocity, 800° C, and 60 minutes residence time, respectively, produced methane yields of 20, 24, and 22 percent, based on maf coal, with the gross heating value of the CO2-free gas decreasing from 552 to 520 and to 470 Btu per scf. Methane concentrations in the CO2-free gas were 26, 22, and 14 percent, respectively. Based on the gross heating value of the coal, the percentage of the heating value recovered in the gas was 60, 71, and 87 percent, respectively. The use of tungsten sulfide as a catalyst for converting carbon oxides and hydrogen into methane was explored briefly using both a sulfur-free gas rich in methane and a sulfur-bearing synthesis gas (3H2:1CO).

The need for a simple, very sensitive, and accurate method for the determination of benzene in blood and urine was evident throughout a recent study of chronic benzene (C6H6) poisoning conducted cooperatively by the United States Bureau of Mines, The Barrett Company, and the producers of benzene. A combustion method which will be described in a later publication, end a previously described5/ adaptation of Smyth's method were developed and used during that investigation. The adaptation of Smyth's method gave satisfactory results when dealing with exposure conditions that produced chronic poisoning in a comparatively few days, but it was time-consuming and lacked the accuracy necessary for a study of the absorption, distribution, and fate of benzene in the body during exposure to threshold concentrations of benzene vapor in air. The combustion procedure was satisfactory from the standpoint of sensitivity but was cumbersome, intricate, time-consuming, and required the use of special and somewhat expensive physical and. chemical apparatus. Following the termination of this study of chronic poisoning, possibilities for developing better methods occurred, and these have been investigated by the Bureau of Mines with the aid of Relief Works Division personnel. A microcolorimetric method for the determination of benzene in air has been described recently.6/ The present report deals with the adaptation of this new colorimetric method to the determination

The purpose of this investigation was to evaluate the physical and mechanical properties of high-purity titanium made by two processes. Sodium-reduced metal with 58 Brinell hardness number (B.h.n.) and electrorefined metal with 60 B.h.n. and 70 B.h.n. were used. Titanium of these hardness levels did not work-harden excessively, and beyond 40 percent cold work the hardening effect was not great. Rapid softening occurred when the metal was annealed at temperature between 300° and 600° C. Full annealing, as determined by property and microstructure studies, was accomplished after 30 minutes at 700° C. A recrystallization diagram is presented which is based on determinations of annealed grain size as a function of rolling reduction and annealing time. For reductions of less than 20 percent, exaggerated grain growth occurred during annealing; for reductions greater than 20 percent, the variation in grain size for each annealing temperature was minor.

A supplemental bibliography, Bureau of Mines Information Circular 7705, was published in January 1955 to cover the period September 1948 through June 1952; and Supplement 2, Information Circular 7751, published in September 1956, covered the period June 1952 through June 1954. This report describes the procedures and summarizes the results of an investigation of surface subsidence above caving blocks at the San Manuel mine, San Manuel, Ariz., in order to obtain quantitative information on subsidence and ground movement caused by mining large volumes of ore. This investigation is one part of an overall study of rock mechanics being undertaken by the Bureau of Mines. Attention was given to the improvement of a rapid and precise method of surveying a large number of subsidence pins and cracks in the surface terrain. Photogrammetric methods were used as an adjunct to the triangulation subsidence surveying as well as in ordinary topographic work Maps of various kinds were prepared to show the results obtained. The computation of the survey notes was programed for an electronic digital computer at a saving of time and expense over the use of a desk calculator and trigonometric tables.

Fiber optic systems are being deployed in locations where explosive gas atmospheres are normally present or are present under fault conditions. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (NIOSH, PRL) conducted a study of laser safety in potentially flammable environments. Researchers conducted experiments to estimate the mean and standard deviation of laser powers needed to ignite 6% methane-air atmospheres using single mode optical fiber tips covered by two types of iron oxide (Fe304 and (FeMn)203) mixed with a ceramic adhesive. The iron oxides, heated by a 1064 nm continuous wave laser, ignited the methane-air mixtures ,at similar powers. The minimum igniting power and maximum non-igniting power (10 tests) were 407 and 350 mW, respectively, using a 62.5 pm fiber. Laser beams guided by 125 and 80 pm diameter cladding single mode fibers produced similar methane-air igniting powers. Ignition was not observed using coal particles at powers that produced ignition with the iron oxides. Threshold ignition delays using the single mode fiber were approxinlately proportional to the inverse square of the igniting power. Ignition delays were significantly longer than the reported activation time for a comnlercial fiber optic power limiter. Comparisons are made with the results of other researchers. The objective of this Bureau of Mines publication Is to present a nomograph that provides a fast, convenient method for estimating hydrocarbon lease bonus bids for offshore acreage in the Gulf of Mexico. Discounted cash flow analyses were computed from a model derived to show the costs necessary to explore, acquire, develop, produce, and abandon a 5,000-acre block of offshore acreage, and the estimated income from the sale of the hydrocarbons produced from the block. The range of the variables in the financial analyses used to construct the nomograph are prices of oil, $2.50 to $5.00; recoverable hydrocarbon reserves, 44,651,476 to 127,575,645 barrels; and discounted cash flow (DCF) rates of return, 5.0 to 57.2 percent. A total of 1,234 sets of DCF data were used to construct the nomograph. The range of bonus bids shown on the nomograph is from 2 to 90 million dollars ($400 to $18,000 per acre).

Pyrometallurgical studies by the Bureau of Mines demonstrated the feasibllity of sintering and smelting a low-grade flotation concentrate made by pilot-plant processing 10-percent manganese ore from the Maggie Canyon deposit, Mohave County, Ariz. Under optimum conditions 85 percent of the manganese in a flotation concentrate that assayed 36 percent manganese was recovered as standard ferromanganese. A blend of this flotation concentrate with high-grade dithionate pilot plant precipitate was similarly processed with a recovery of 90 percent of the manganese. Thorough mixing and pelletizing of the charge before treatment on the sinter hearth was necessary to produce a well agglomerated product by single pass sintering. Although satisfactory sinter was produced from a variety of material combinations, best results were obtained on a charge that contained 80 percent flotation concentrate and 20 percent return sinter fines. This combination was mixed with 6 percent coke, based on weight of concentrate; and 12 percent moisture. Sintering such a charge yielded a well agglomerated product containing over 80 percent coarse material, The results of standard crushing tests showed that the product was physically comparable to iron ore sinters and manganese nodules.
