As part of the Bureau of Mines critical and strategic minerals program in Alaska, 34 high-purity chromian spinel samples were analyzed for trace and major element geochemistry and mineralogy. The samples were analyzed by X-ray diffraction, X-ray fluorescence, and chemical techniques. Systematic differences in chemistry are evident when samples collected from the Chugach Mountains and their related extension are compared with chromian spinel samples collected from interior Alaska. Compared with the Chugach samples, the interior Alaska samples have higher average amounts of A1203, Fe203, Ti02, and NiO, have lower average amounts of FeO and Cr203, and exhibit greater dispersion in values. Considerable mineralogical variability of chromian spinel exists between and within individual Alaskan chromite-bearing ultramafic complexes. Of 34 samples analyzed, 25 samples are magnesiochromite, 5 are chromite, 3 are spinel, and 1 is hercynite. As a group the interior Alaska samples have a smaller average unit cell dimension than the Chugach group of samples. The chemical and mineralogical differences between the two groups of samples can be attributed to different genetic histories and may have implications for locating chromian spinel deposits amenable to standard beneficiating techniques.

Data input is divided into three divisions for discussion purposes below. These divisions are: a) Information Retrieval and Control Options; b) Gaming Options; and c) Descriptive Parameters. The data input for model application, which is listed in Appendix B, is segmented to show the location of these divisions. In actuality, however, these divisions form a continuous data file. Each 80 character record of data input is edited by an alpha¬numeric editing routine which permits the format free numerical speci¬fication in most data divisions. The editing routine searches each record for numeric types and when found, converts these numbers into computational forms. The Fortran convention of decimal and integer numbers is not used by the editor so that a number may appear on the data record in either form desired by the user. Since the editor seeks only numeric types, the input records may be freely commented and identified with alphabetic letters (A - Z). One or more input records may contain only commentary information or be entirely blank. On the other extreme, any data record may contain up to 40 numeric elements, each separated by a blank space. The application of this capability can be seen by reference to the data. The process of ?gasfreeing? has been defined3/ as "* * * the removal of oil and vapors from tanks, pipelines, and compartments to render such spaces safe for the intended work," Generally, part or all of a vessel is gasfreed for one of several reasons: Periodic cleaning; tank inspection or repairs; shipyard overhaul or major repairs; or change of cargo, Curing the gas- freeing, flammable or explosive4/ mixtures (mixtures through which a flame can propagate after ignition by an open flame, heated object, electrical charge, or other means) may be produced. These mixtures create an explosion hazard, as the pressures produced after their ignition are often great enough to completely demolish the vessel and kill all those aboard, This paper outlines a study by the Federal Bureau of Mines of the gas explosion hazards likely to be encountered while gasfreeing a vessel compartment. To better understand these hazards it will first be necessary to review the language used in gas- explosions work. This language is considered in the following sections. Inert gases such as carbon dioxide, nitrogen, water vapor, and others can be used to decrease the range of combustible-vapor concentrations in which flammable mixtures are formed. Sufficient quantities of such gases can often be added to cause a mixture that originally was flamable to become nonflammable. Unfortunately, the use of water vapor in this application is complicated by the fact that elevated temperatures are required to keep the water in the vapor state. In practice, it may be difficult to maintain these elevated temperatures throughout the space (such as a cargo tank) to be inerted for any length of time. Accordingly, where other inert gases are not available, it may be desirable to gasfree a Lank by using heated air. To do this, the combustible vapors should be flushed as quickly as possible from the space to be gasfreed. In a properly designed system, large tanks were gasfreed with a littlee as 6 volumes of air per volume of tank capacity.

The effectiveness of induction fans in ventilating dead headings was studied in the laboratory and underground. The following fan attachments were evaluated: a. Aerodynamic nozzle b. Various lengths of vent tube c. Honeycomb airflow straightener. Various fan locations were also tested. The following conclusions were reached: a. A nozzle on a fan located against the drift wall gives the greatest jet penetration distance. b. Air straighteners are ineffective in increasing jet penetration. c. Induction fans are ineffective in removing contaminants from dead headings without sufficient main ventilation flow.

The lack of good communication is a very real problem in mine emergencies. Sometimes critical information is not communicated to those who need it to make decisions. At other times, those on the receiving end of a warning do not think to ask the right questions. What happens in underground coal mine fires is a case in point. The authors interviewed 48 workers who escaped three serious fires in western Pennsylvania. In each case the location of the fire was known but did not get communicated to many of those who had to evacuate. Sometimes, even the nature of the problem was not clearly communicated. Some workers began their evacuation knowing nothing about what was happening. In an effort to improve emergency communication National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) researchers worked with safety professionals to determine what sorts of information are critical in a mine emergency. An extensive list was generated, which proved too long to be remembered by individuals. The list was therefore collapsed into six categories. A communication protocol was derived from these categories.

"INTRODUCTION Adoption of rubber-tire shuttle cars underground in conjunction with mobile coal-loading machines has introduced new problems in the control of dust on mine roadways. Where this type of loading and transportation is used, development and extraction are generally rapid, with the result that much coal is spilled from the shuttle cars during normal operation, Coal in the roadways from this source and from sloughing of the ribs is ground to fine dust by the wheels of the 'shuttle cars and by the treads of the loading and mining machines. The coal dust usually is somewhat contaminated by pulverized rock, and the mixture could not be loaded with the run-of-mine coal without undue contamination of the product even if it were cleaned up promptly.The presence of large quantities of fine, loose dust, which is constantly stirred up and kept in suspension in air by the traffic, constitutes a grave explosion hazard, reduces visibility along the roadways, and is physiologically harmful to the workmen who breathe the air. From the operating standpoint the loose material is undesirable along the roadways because it provides poor traction for the trucks and thereby increases wear and power consumption. The dust-explosion hazard could be eliminated or reduced by frequent application of sufficient rock dust on the roadbed; but this would not remedy the other difficulties, and in fact it might intensify them. Where practicable, the most direct and effective safety measure is to clean up and remove promptly all dust that forms and settles on the roadways. Unfortunately, in many cases this procedure is not feasible. A third Suggested remedy is to prevent dispersal of the dust into the air and to promote its consolidation on the floor by wetting the dust particles.During the past few years several mines have used calcium chloride on shuttle-car roadways to allay the dust thereon. When exposed to the' humid atmosphere of the mine this salt absorbs Moisture from the air and deliquesces, and in this way wets the dust on the floor of the roadway. In a survey conducted in coal mines in southern West Virginia and in eastern Kentucky where calcium chloride has been in use, somewhat conflicting re- ports were received regarding the merits of the application, and several operators have abandoned the practice either because of actual or assumed disadvantages. The purpose of the study described in this report was to collect and correlate evidence and, on the basis of experimental data obtained in the field and in laboratory tests, to present a clearer picture of the factors involved in the allaying of dust by use of salts."

Beasley, the smelter superintendent, and his staff.INTR0DUCTI0NIt has been noted that the gases issuing from the top6 of the charges in the International Smelting Co.'s furnaces at Tooele, Utah, were very similar in composition to the gases from the top of the iron blast furnace, as they contained about 26 per cent of CO and 12 per cent of C02, the rest of the constituents being mainly nitrogen with a very little hydrogen and oxygen. It has been seen that where the column of coke was sufficiently high, the production of C0 gas to carry out the reduction of lead ores was accomplished in about the same manner as in a gas producer. In some cases, there was a little oxygen in the ""top gas"" -- usually not over a few tenths of a per cent, but at times amounting to several per cent. The presence of this gas was attributed to irregularities in operation that permitted air to come up through the tuybres to the surface without meeting any coke that was incandescent. Only a hundredth of a per cent or so of sulphurous oxides was present in the gases issuing from the top of the furnace."

This chapter summarizes data on crude nonfuel mineral production for the United States, its island possessions, and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico. Included also are the tables that show the principal nonfuel mineral commodities exported from and imported into the United States and that compare world and U.S. mineral production. The detailed data from which these tables were derived are contained in the individual commodity chapters of Volume I and in the State chapters of Volume II of this edition of the Minerals Yearbook. Although crude mineral production may be measured at any of several stages of extraction and processing, the stage of measurement used in this chapter is what is normally termed "mine output." It usually refers to minerals or ores in the form in which they are first extracted from the ground, but customarily includes the output from auxiliary processing at or near the mines.

As part of research conducted in its mission to effect pollution abatement, the Bureau of Mines, U. S. Department of the Interior, is developing a dewatering technique that allows for disposal of phosphatic clay wastes, for reuse of water now lost with clays, and for reclamation of mined land. The technique utilizes a high-molecular-weightnonionic polyethylene oxide polymer (PEO) that has the ability to flocculate and dewater phosphatic clay wastes. A synergistic flocculation study was made to determine whether a portion of PEO could be replaced by other reagents. Several groups of reagents were tested: (1) those that increased the zeta potential of the phosphatic clay wastes; (2) those capable of hydrogen bonding; and (3) those which flocculated the phosphatic clay waste. Reduction in PEO consumption occurred only with addition of those reagents able to flocculate the slime. The use of natural guar gums resulted in a lower PEO requirement and also yielded a dewatered product of higher solids content, 43 to 45 percent, versus 33 to 35 percent obtained with PEO alone.

Landstrom et al. (1985) suggested the possibility of cortical activation during exposure to WBV, however, it is not known how cerebral physiology (oxygenation and blood volume) responds in healthy women during different vibration frequencies. This study examined the role of backrest support and handgrip work on cerebral oxygenation and blood volume responses, during exposure to seated WBV. Methods Fourteen women (age: 23.9 ± 3.5 years) were randomly exposed to three frequencies of WBV (3, 4.5 and 6 Hz at approximately 0.9gr.m.s in the vertical direction) on a customized vibrating base (Advanced Therapy Products, Inc., USA) in a seated posture on three separate days. On the first day, the subjects completed an aerobic fitness test until volitional exhaustion on an arm cranking ergometer (Cybex, MET 300, USA). Each WBV session lasted 30 min (6 min baseline without WBV, 8 min WBV ‘with’ or ‘without’ backrest support, and 4 min recovery from WBV, 8 min WBV with ‘opposite’ backrest condition, and 4 min recovery following WBV). During 8 min WBV exposure ‘with’ and ‘without’ backrest support, subjects performed maximal voluntary rhythmic handgrip contractions with their right hand for 1 min using a dynamometer. To obtain regional oxygenation and blood volume responses, a NIRS sensor (MicroRunman, NIM, Inc., PA, USA) was placed on the anterior right frontal lobe just below the hair and close to fronto-temporalis region (Maikala et al. 2005). Results Baseline oxygenation and blood volume values were recorded during recovery from each WBV session of ‘with’ and ‘without’ backrest support. The physiological change in oxygenation and blood volume during each frequency (3, 4.5, and 6 Hz) for both backrest (‘with’ and ‘without’ a backrest) and workload (WBV only and WBV combined with rhythmic handgrip contractions) was calculated as the difference between the maximum values identified for each WBV condition of backrest and workload and baseline values (Maikala et al. 2005). Three-way analysis of covariance with repeated measures (frequency, backrest, and workload) with a fully crossed design was used to evaluate the differences in the oxygenation and blood volume responses (measured in optical density [od] units). The work described in this report was undertaken to evaluate and develop techniques for determining the oxygen content of titanium and titanium alloys. Early investigations of volatilization techniques involving halogenation were unsuccessful. Later efforts were concentrated on evaluating vacuum fusion and inert-gas fusion techniques. Two vacuum fusion methods and an inert-gas fusion method were found to be satisfactory in the 0.02 to 1.00 pct., oxygen range. These methods are described in detail. The coefficient of variation by any of the three methods is approximately 5 pct, While the main portion of this paper is devoted to the vacuum and inert-gas fusion methods, a resume of other suggested methods for analyzing titanium for oxygen also is given. INTRODUCTION The Federal Bureau of Nines has conducted research on titanium metal since 1938. This research included development of the Kroll process for the production of titanium (2)4, various sodium reduction processes for making titanium metal and lower valent titanium chloride-sodium chloride mixtures (17), and a fused salt electrolytic process for Me production of high-purity titanium metal and the recovery of titanium by electrorefining from off-grade materials (20).

A mineral survey of the Rough Hills WSA (Wilderness Study Area) in northeastern Nevada was done by the U.S. Bureau of Mines in 1985 at the request of the Bureau of Land Management. The WSA is comprised of 6,685 acres of mountainous, desert lands within the Elko District of the Bureau of Land Management. The survey entailed investigations of prospects or mineral occurrences to provide information on possible resources within the WSA. No mineral resources were identified in the WSA. The only historical mining activity was for placer gold at the Prunty prospect at the confluence of Copper Creek and the Bruneau River. Total gravel at the prospect is about 6,500 cubic yards; however, the survey showed significant gold values (greater than $0.10 gold per cubic yard) only in the southwestern portion. There, however, the gravel averaged less than $1.00 gold per cubic yard, and only about 3,000 cubic yards are present, a grade and yardage insufficient to be of commercial interest. The occurrence, however, may have value for recreational mining by hobbyists.

The specific objective of this investigation was to determine the compressibility factors for helium and carbon dioxide mixtures at -10° and -20° C and pressures to 1,000 psia. A Burnett apparatus was used. Data from the experiments were treated by the method of Barieau and Dalton. Tables of compressibility factors and approximations of the virial coefficients are presented for 10 binary mixtures as well as for helium and carbon dioxide. The results follow the same trend as data previously reported.

The Federal Bureau of Mines, as part of a program to insure future raw material needs for the iron and steel industry, undertook research to beneficiate the oxidized taconites from the western Mesabi range in Minnesota. The data presented were obtained by applying the Bureau-developed selective-flocculation/cationic-flotation process to the second of three oxidized taconite samples. These three samples are representative of an estimated 10 billion tons of ore analyzing 30 to 40 pct iron. The experimental work was performed in a 900-lb/hr pilot plant. Treating the ore sample (36.1 pct Fe) with the Bureau's process produced commercially acceptable concentrates averaging 63.5 pct Fe and 4.3 pct SiO2, with an average iron recovery of 84.6 pct.

The work described in this report was part of a Bureau of Mines program to appraise the titanium-mineral resources of Idaho. Part of the program included churn drilling of alluvial deposits that previous preliminary testing, primarily for rare minerals, had indicated to be potential sources of titanium minerals. The first spot churn drilling began in the Deadwood placer area, Valley County, Idaho, in July 1956 to determine both the amount and grade of the ilmenite, FeTi03. Ten holes, ranging in depth from 6 to 40 feet and aggregating 251 feet, were drilled; 54 samples were taken. The samples were sent to the Spokane field laboratory for concentration and visual estimation of the amounts of the more common minerals in the heavy sand concentrates. For specific determinations samples from each drill hole were composited and shipped to the Bureau of Mines laboratory in Albany, Oreg., where petrographic, quantitative X-ray spectrographic, and chemical analyses were made.

"INTRODUCTION The Bureau of Mines began a study of various methods for producing magnesium metal from magnesite ores in 1936 at Pullman, Wash., with the cooperation of Washington State College. This work included a study of the basic principles involved in the reduction of magnesium oxide by carbon, which soon led to the development of a continuous process. In May 1939, a small pilot plant was operated, which included a small single-phase arc furnace with a hydraulic feed mechanism and an oil-spray device for shock cooling the metal vapor. 5/Subsequently, the Ford Motor. Co., Dearborn, Michigan, began a study of this process on a larger scale. A pilot plant with a nominal capacity of 10 pounds of magnesium metal per hour was constructed and operated intermittently. A larger unit with a nominal capacity of 100 pounds of magnesium per hour was partly constructed when war activities prevented experimental work.In the meantime, the process was greatly improved through continued investigation by the Bureau of Mines at Pullman, and these improvements were successfully tested by continuous operation in a small pilot plant having a normal capacity of 4 pounds an hour."

"Conservation of slateWaste slate is a problem of outstanding importance in the slate industry, for a very large proportion of all slate quarried is thrown on the waste heap. While many uses for waste slate have been found, the demand calls for merely a fraction of the present supply of unused material. If the slate industry is to increase in prosperity, the producer's energy must be directed toward the development of ways and means of reducing waste to the lowest possible point. The Bureau of Mines of the Department of the Interior has devoted much study to this problem and a recent bulletin ** contains a detailed discussion of the waste problem.Attention has recently been directed toward an improved method of cutting slate in quarries, a method that promises to reduce greatly the percentage of waste material. The method has been introduced since that bulletin was published, and this supplementary paper covers the details of the process.A reversion in method,In connection with this new mode of operation history is repeating itself in a very interesting way, for the old quarry bar used years ago with steam drills, and later discarded in favor of the channeling machine .and the hammer drill, has been salvaged from the scrap heap, and again put to active use. The occasion for its employment is an attempt to improve quarry methods by the substitution of drilling for channeling or blasting."

In 1985 the U.S. Bureau of Mines evaluated the mineral resources of the Sheep Creek West Wilderness Study Area (ID-111-36A), Owyhee County, ID, for the U.S. Bureau of Land Management. The Wilderness Study Area consists of 11,680 acres centered approximately 20 miles south of Grasmere, 10. It contains no mines, claims, or prospects. No mineral resources were identified; however, a geode occurrence within and adjacent to the Wilderness Study Area, and minor amounts of placer gold along Sheep Creek, may be of interest to rorkhounds and recreational gold panners.

As potash is more necessary to the agricultural economy of the United States now than ever before it is gratifying to find that the virtual stoppage of imports from Germany in late 1939 caused none of the anxious foreboding that gripped American farmers in 1914. For long decades this country, in common with tie rest of the world, depended upon German potash, but today our expanded needs can be mot from domestic sources. The present armed conflict in Europe, like that of 1914, disrupted a world monopoly, but the cartel that in recent years controlled 90 percent of the world output (see fig, 1) was an international syndicate comprising French, Polish, and Spanish as well as German producers and having reported sales agreements covering production in the U. S. S. R. and Palestine. The break-up of these commercial agreements has necessitated readjustments but generates no such alarm as the closing of a single source of supply. In striking contrast to the critical shortage that developed a quarter century ago, no increase in prices has occurred or is anticipated in the domestic market.

Numerous mine fires have resulted in high death tolls and considerable finan¬cial loss during the history of coal mining. In most instances the death toll and financial loss were greater because of inadequate fire-fighting facilities. The information in this report is presented in the hope it may serves as a guide in the selection, placement, and care of fire-protection systems in similar coal mines. The adequacy of fire protection varies according to size of operation, employment, and production. When fires occur on the surface or underground, measures must be applied quickly to prevent incipient fires from spreading. The record of coal-mine fires shows that, in many instances, facilities for combating fires were very meager or were absent. It would be virtually impossible to establish and maintain all the necessary facili¬ties that may be needed to extinguish widespread mine fires, but it is believed that the coal industry can ill afford less than the minimum required by other industries where the time element and avenues of escape are much more favorable.
