"As part of an investigation into flotation modelling of industrial scale operations, Falconbridge Ltd organised a “blind” test of the SUPASIM flotation model developed by Eurus Mineral Consultants (EMC). Two sets of rougher rate data, a flowsheet and the number and size of cells in the rougher bank were supplied from a plant that had been previously surveyed in November 2003. The name of the plant, cleaner circuit details and circuit mass balance were, at the time, unknown to EMC. With only these data, flotation performance was simulated and the cleaner circuit sizedFalconbridge then compared predicted and actual float performance and mass balance and found that final concentrate recovery and mass and circuit cell volume matched closely. Simulated recoveries relative to actual were +0.4% Cu, +0.1% Ni and -0.7% Co. However, prediction of metal distribution in the internal streams making up the various circulating loads showed some sizeable errors. On this initial success, the trial was extended and additional float test data for rougher feed, cleaner feed and cleaner scavenger feed was generated on site in April 2005. Further simulations significantly improved prediction accuracy for metal distribution in the internal streams. The average difference between predicted and actual recovery for all streams was reduced from 10.5% to 0.4%. This updated simulation was then used to ascertain the impact on final recovery, grade and plant circulating loads of increasing feed tonnage from 114 to 150t/hr. A number of scenarios were simulated in order to understand the contribution that (a) the fast and slow floating fractions and (b) regrinding of cleaner tailings are making to overall plant recovery.Simulation was then used to determine how much the flotation kinetics of both rougher feed and cleaner scavenger feed have to increase in order to deliver a 1.5% improvement in overall plant recovery. These improved kinetic values provide a target for laboratory testwork and operating conditions can be varied to determine how best to achieve these new values of fraction and rate."

The electrokinetic (EK) technology for dewatering of two tailings from the uranium mines in Northern Saskatchewan is studied in bench scale experiments. The study includes four phases: 1. Characterization of two uranium mine tailings; 2. Assessment of voltage loss on the coated Ti anode and water interface. 3. EK cell test series to measure electrokinetic permeability (ke) of two tailings; 4. EK dewatering test series to study electrokinetic enhanced gravity dewatering on two tailings samples. The results have demonstrated that both tailings responded positively to the EK process. For the tailings containing gypsum, the EK dewatering should be a short term process (within one hour) with anode conditioning (pH adjustment). The tailings containing clay minerals responded well to EK dewatering, in which pH adjustment is optional and will further enhance the EK flow. Both tailings as tested have low hydraulic conductivity and are particularly suitable for EK dewatering and consolidation.

Hopefully, misleading notions and omissions will have been minimized and there will have been testing of the assumptions regarding the economic, social and political environments.A capital project evaluation team can do management and itself a service by including a sound approach to the impact of inflation (and its twin problem, interest) on a project and a great disservice with an inappropriate approach to inflation.InflationHandled deftly, inflation can alter a project evaluation to show almost any result the handler desires. It must be a constant source of frustration for design people and cost estimators to spend weeks perfecting the technical aspects of a project in order to minimize costs, only to have all of their efforts set awash in a sea of financial and economic assumptions that submerge all of the detail. In all of this, inflation is perhaps the largest offender, with inflation criteria often being brought to bear at the last minute, almost as an afterthought. Perhaps this tardiness reflects the difficulty of the subject and the belief that senior management will take its own approach to the problems of inflation. Such a belief is unfair to senior management, for it is entitled to not being misled by omission. It is entitled to the full use of the skills of the evaluating team, including reasonable assumptions of the impact of inflation.Working in a consulting context, one has the opportunity to participate in the evaluation of a large number of projects."

"Le gisement polymétallique (Cu-Zn-Au-Ag) des Mines Selbaie est forme par un réseau de filons encaisses dans une séquence de pyroclastites felsiques du sill on Harricana-Turgeon. Les minéralisations sont encaissées dans le tuf de Selbaie, situe sous une épaisse séquence d'ignimbrites Iitées. Ce gisement se distingue des autres gites archéens par une chronologie atypique des minéralisations: les veines de chalcopyrite, de sphalérite et de galène recoupent un amas exhalatifpyriteux stérile. Un vaste halo d'altération hydrothermale a chlorite et mica blanc est associe à cette minéralisation.La mise en place des veines minéralisées est associée à une phase d'extension NNW-SSE. Le complexe volcanique subit, par la suite, trois phases de déformation. Une compression, orienté N-S, développe une schistosité à peine pénétrative et un réseau de fentes de tension. Une réorientation des contraintes locales selon une direction WNW-ESE conduit au chevauchement de I' écaille d'andésite et de tonalite de Brouillan. "IntroductionThe Hull iron range, comprising the Forsyth, Scott , Baldwin and Lawless properties (Fig. I), is in Gatineau Park, on the outskirt s o f the city of Hull , and about 6 miles (10 kilometres) northwest of the Federal Parliament Buildings.The deposits have been known many years and described numerous times, although the history has been treated lightly in former publications. Total ore shipments have been calculated at 122,700 long tons, of which over 80% were mined before 1900 and 74% in two brief periods: 1870-74 and 1880-82. It is surprising that the period 1870-74 has been overlooked by most authors and 1880-82 ignored altogether. More surprising, the essential data for these two periods are contained in manuscripts of the Robert Bell collection, which must have been available to officers of the Geological Survey o f Canada.The period 1801-1874 ha s already been covered by the writer in ""Pioneer mines”, but much information has come to light since publication. The present paper is therefore based o n new data and a fresh appraisal. However, little additional data were found for the early history (1801-1854) or for the legal cases involving A.H. Baldwin, and these parts were mainly summarized from the relevant sections of the above-mentioned publication.GeologyThe ore deposits are all situated somewhat below the middle of a graphitic, calcitic marble horizon, here folded into a northeast-plunging synform. The Forsyth, Scott and Baldwin deposits are on the south limb of the synform; the Lawless is on the north limb. The marble is underlain by three non-carbonate groups: biotite gneiss with interlayered quartzite (top), granite gneiss and skarn (middle), and biotite-garnet gneiss (bottom). Below these groups is a lower horizon of graphitic, calcitic marble. The whole sequence is Precambrian and has been subjected to high-grade (Grenvillian) metamorphism, but, in the north, is cut by an unmetamorphosed Cambro-Ordovician diabase dyke. Determination of the nonlinear behavior of multivariate dynamic systems often presents a challenging and demanding task. Therefore, complex geomechanics systems are an ideal area for the application of intelligent methods. Often the physical problem is controlled by nonlinear equations, conveying to the use of neural networks. Hudson, (1992a), aiming at efficient engineering modelling and design, introduced and developed Rock Engineering Systems (RES) approach, through the implementation of generic interaction matrix GIM. This approach has been used for a wide variety of rock engineering and other problems, resulting in many case studies available, which illustrate the application of RES to rock engineering problems. Considering the spectrum of the coding methods for the Generic Interaction Matrix, we suggest an objective coding approach. Among the five proposed coding GIM methods, the coding method according to the slope of Pi and Pj relation is relatively accurate, but it might be difficult or impossible to establish or estimate the exact relation of Pi vs Pj for most of the variables involved within a rock engineering system. Self organising maps, are a special type of unsupervised artificial neural networks, which can learn from complex, multidimensional data, and transform them to visually decipherable clusters. The proposed, coding of the GIM, is performed through the combined use of scatter plots produced through, (SOM), and the coding according Pi vs Pj slope. Naghadehi et al., (2013) constructed a database of worldwide experience, in open-pit mine slope stability, the selection of the principal factors was based on Hudson (1992a) who proposed an ‘atlas’ of factors affecting the stability of rock slopes. Slope classification was performed according to status of stability. The rating of the GIM matrix was completed, coupling scatter matrix produced by SOM training, and Pi vs Pj slope plot. Results refer to the identification of clusters, according to status of stability within the original multivariate data set, and the rating of the principal factors according to the dominance and interaction intensity within the open pit mines RES.

"Mechanical properties and microstructure of an Al-4.7Cu-0.74Mg-0.51Si-0.48Mn-0.10Cr-0.09Ti-0.02Fe (wt. %) alloy subjected to various thermomechanical processing (TMP) have been investigated and compared to conventional ageing at 170°C (designated T6). Three TMP routes involving cold deformation of solution treated samples were tested. These were (i) 3%-stretching (T8-3%), (ii) equal-channel angular pressing (ECAP) to true strain (e) of ~1 (T8-1) and (iii) ECAP to e~2 (T8-2), all with subsequent ageing at 170°C for 0-96 h. At peak age conditions, both yield stress, ultimate tensile strength and elongation-to-fracture decreased for the T8-3% state as compared to the T6 condition. Intermediate ECAP (T8-1 and T8-2) lead to significant increase in maximum yield stress, ultimate tensile strength and elongation-to-fracture. The changes in mechanical properties were related to microstructure evolution, encompassing changes in grain sizes, dislocation densities, precipitate morphology and phase fractions, which were characterised using transmission electron microscopy. Relations between TMP, precipitation behavior and contributions to different strengthening mechanisms are evaluated.INTRODUCTION Al-Cu-Mg-Si alloys are widely used as structural materials in aerospace industry due to their attractive combination of high specific strength, good fracture toughness and enhanced creep resistance. These properties are largely due to the formation of a large number of nano-sized metastable precipitates during artificial ageing (Polmear, 2006; Eskin, 2003; Gazizov, Dubina, Zhemchuzhnikova, & Kaibyshev, 2015). "ABSTRACT:-A 60—cm semiautogenous grinding-(SAG) mill was designed -for continuous wet operation in closed circuit with a vibrating screen. The circuit is fully instrumented and automated. Part of the control system incorporates Foxboro SPEC 200 controllers around the pump box to maintain level. The rest of the control system involves an ACTION model BC2 basic direct digital controller that handles all other inputs/outputs and contact closure sensing:·The success of the control system is attributed to the uniqueness of specially designed mass flow metering systems. Various control strategies are possible. Employed to date has been control of a mill load set-point by cascading the deviation from load set-point as the set-point to the fresh feed rate ""controller"". Mill feed water is ratioed to total flow rate of solids fed to the mill. The performance of the circuit is being correlated with the performance of full scale SAG circuits in British Columbia to develop models, to assess the feasibility of scale up and to investigate the effects of design variables on responses such as circuit throughput. 1 INTRODUCTIONWhere ore types are appropriate, semiautogenous grinding and/or autogenous grinding (AG) has replaced conventional grinding. Secondary/Tertiary crushing plants are thereby eliminated so that capital expenditures are less and overall comminution costs can be lower (Barratt 1982). To establish the suitability of an ore for SAG circuits, pilot scale tests with 1.7 to 1.8 M diameter mills are often conducted. At least one test per ore type in a deposit has been necessary. Often, each test involves a large amount (up to 50 tonne) of sample, so that the testwork can be expensive and may discourage the use of SAG or AG circuits. However, MacPherson (1977) has employed a continuous 45 cm dry Aerofall mill circuit closed with screens and an air classifier to determine whether ores are suitable for SAG milling. The amount of sample per ore type is of the order of 60 kg or less. Thus an established SAG mill scale up procedure that employs small circuits is highly desirable.The purpose of this paper is to describe a small 60 cm wet continuous SAG/ AG mill pilot circuit assembled at the University of British Columbia to study the feasibility of scale up, to assess the influence of design variables, to develop mathematical models and to evaluate the effects of alternative control strategies on circuit performance"

"In this paper, geostatistical techniques are applied to forecast the annual copper price in the short and medium terms (from one to five years ahead). These techniques allow the incorporation of monthly and multivariate information in the analysis and provide more accurate results than traditional approaches, especially as far as the one-year forecast is concerned.A second advantage of geostatistics stems from its ability to assess the uncertainty associated with the unknown future prices, thanks to estimation variances or confidence intervals, depending on the technique used. Such an assessment has a crucial importance in decision-making, from both macroeconomic and microeconomic points of view. IntroductionThe copper price traded in the London Metal Exchange is a relevant parameter for defining macroeconomic policies of producing countries like Chile. It is also a key factor for the mining companies, since fluctuations in the sell price affect the expected financial flows. Due to the amount of money involved in decision-making, it is necessary to have accurate forecasts of the future copper prices and to quantify the uncertainty associated with such prices.This paper focuses on the annual copper price estimation in the short and medium terms, i.e., from one to five years into the future. Henceforth, the word “estimation” will be used as a synonym of “forecast,” according to the geostatistical jargon (Matheron, 1989).Two main approaches, based either on statistics or econometrics, are currently used to forecast commodity prices, but both of them are not very accurate when applied to copper. First, the main methods are briefly reviewed, then the geostatistical formalism will be presented. So far, the latter approach hardly has been used to estimate commodity prices, although it may reconcile both statistics and econometrics via (1) the use of a stochastic approach and (2) the handling of ancillary variables related to the copper market. Another advantage of geostatistical techniques is the ability not only to forecast the copper price, but also to measure the uncertainty associated with it."

"This paper is a brief overview of the role of oxygen in cyanide leaching of gold feeds (e.g. ore, concentrate). As the majority of gold occurs in the elemental state (Au °), its oxidation is of vital importance for dissolution in the cyanide lixiviant. The cyanidetion at high pH is favourable for the oxidation of Au° with a mild oxidant such as air or oxygen. Beside oxidation of gold, deleterious effects of soluble sulphides, arsenates, antimonates on cyanidation of gold can be alleviated by preaerating the leach slurry with air or oxygen (i.e. preaeration process).If gold is refractory due to its occlusion in sulphides, silicates, tellurides, etc. then gold liberation is possible by roasting in the presence of oxygen or by leaching under oxygen pressure. The data in the recent literature indicate that reactive oxygen supplied by H202, Na202, Ca02 or 03 during cyanidation can accelerate considerably gold oxidation-cyanidation and yield high gold recovery in much shorter leach time. The information compiled in this review leads to the conclusion that oxygen plays a vital role in the dissolution of gold in cyanide lixiviant."

"Gold gravity recovery circuits utilizing enhanced gravity separators have become an integral part of many of the modern gold processing plants. Thus, efforts to improve the operating efficiency have been a topic of interest for metallurgists for many years. As part of this endeavour, a methodology to estimate the portion of gold in the ore that could be recovered by gravity separation (gravity recoverable gold or GRG) was developed at McGill University. It has been reported in the literature that the gold content estimated with this methodology is the theoretical maximum that is available for gravity recovery that could only be approached but never achieved. A comparison of GRG recovery obtained in the laboratory with the actual recovery in the plant shows that plants recover between one-third to two-thirds of the value predicted by the laboratory test.Research conducted at COREM shows that particle shape transformation during grinding is a major cause of the discrepancy (even though the bleed percent processed, the quality of cyclone classification and the operating conditions of the gravity separator also contribute to the difference). To analyze the gold particle shapes and their deportment, samples were collected from different streams of a grinding-gravity circuit in a gold plant and compared to a concentrate sample from the standard GRG test. A particle characterization methodology based on gold morphology was developed. GRG mapping in a conventional grinding-gravity circuit and the transformation of GRG into non-GRG, as mainly explained by gold particle reshaping, will be discussed. The knowledge gained from the shape analysis will be used to develop shape distributions and partition curves for the classification of shapes.INTRODUCTIONGravity concentration using centrifugal concentrators has gained increasing popularity since the invention of the enhanced gravity concentrators in the nineteen eighties. Among these, the semicontinuous centrifugal gravity concentrators are most commonly used for recovering gold and platinum group minerals (PGM) from grinding circuit streams. The benefits of gold gravity recovery are now well understood and the acceptance by the mining industry is overwhelming. The occurrence of reasonable amounts of gravity recoverable gold (GRG) in an ore prompts gold mills to install gravity circuits. Thus, the increased use of gravity concentration has necessitated a better understanding of the behavior of gold in grinding circuits and of the factors affecting the performance of the gravity concentrator (Laplante et al., 1995). Due to its high density (19.3 g/cm3 when pure) and malleability properties, gold tends to accumulate in circulating streams making it attractive for gravity recovery. The gravity recovery units are typically installed on a bleed stream of the cyclone underflow, mill discharge or cyclone feed."

A brief account of economic developments in and around northeastern Alberta is presented and mention is made of mining and industrial developments currently of interest in the area. Planned and projected operations are briefly discussed for this region. The history of geological surveys and mining activities in the Shield area of Alberta and the adjoining parts of Northwest Territories and Saskatchewan is traced. Reassessment of the presently-known economic picture of northwestern Canada in conjunction with some recent information on Precambrian structures of northeastern Alberta points to some interesting mining possibilities, particularly in and around that province.

Originally developed for use in mineral exploration, regional geochemical mapping based on stream (and lake) sediment sampling is showing broader application in other areas of the earth sciences and in environmental science. The purpose of this paper is to focus attention on the role of regional geochemical mapping in relation to geological and environmental studies. This is achieved using a descriptive equation for the chemical composition of a stream-sediment sample and then relating it to the use of successive approximations in geochemical and environmental investigations. The procedure is further qualified with reference to time and process in the formation of regional geochemical patterns. Examples are included of studies based on stream sediments related to bedrock geology, surficial geology, ecology and man's effect on the geochemistry of the environment. The range of applications of regional geochemical mapping in earth and environmental studies is outlined and some conclusions drawn regarding the future development of geochemical mapping under Canadian conditions.

A seismic monitoring system was installed in 2005 at Dongguashan Copper Mine, the deepest metal mine in China. Based on the seismic events monitored in situ, the possibility of rockburst prediction and prevention is investigated in this paper. The characteristics of space-timeintensity of mining-induced seismicity and the seismic response to mining are studied in detail using the seismic data in Dongguashan Mine. A conceptual model and a criterion of assessment of hazard seismic nucleation are proposed for Dongguashan Mine. In this model, the mine seismic stiffness method is adopted for rockburst prediction within the framework of the unstable failure theory. To analyze rock failure cases in Donggauashan Mine, the rate of the ratio of stiffness of rock in nucleation area to its surrounding area is proposed as a criterion for rockburst prediction.

"Some typical landslide phenomena in Western Greece, in terms of the geological composition and structure of the affected materials, induced by heavy rainfalls are thoroughly studied and analyzed. The studied cases involved composite landslides on Flysch and Neogene weak rock materials that constitute the most critical landslide prone geological formations in Greece. The studied cases named Platanos, Platanitis and Karya include representative landslide sites as regards to the geological composition and structure of the displaced formations. Thus: (a) flysch formation includes different lithological units as shales, marls, siltstones, sandstones and conglomerates and is closely related to the Alpine orogenesis, suffering intense past tectonic movements and (b) the Plio-Pleistocene sediments include clayey marls, marlstones and siltstones. The investigated landslides , affecting mainly transportation routes, are closely related to heavy rainfalls induced by extreme meteorological events and are controlled by active fault tectonics. Long term movement monitoring using borehole inclinometers and surface benchmarks showed that landslides control was effective only when the proper stabilization measures were taken.INTRODUCTIONLandslides represent a major threat to human life, property, infrastructure and natural environment in most regions of the world. They are recognized by the scientific and politic authorities as having a major socio-economic impact and they represent a significant hazard for the population and the properties in particular locations. Landslide hazard expressed as the probability of occurrence within a reference time period and is a function of the spatial and temporal probability (Varnes, 1984; Guzzetti et al. 1999; Lee and Jones, 2004). The spatial probability of landslide initiation (susceptibility) is mainly related to static causal factors (slope inclination, material properties, etc.), while temporal probability is mainly related to dynamic causal factors such as rain input, increased groundwater levels and drainage, earthquakes, etc. (Van Westen et al. 2005)."

"This paper describes the performance properties of a new 95 ksi minimum yield strength, oil well casing grade designed specifically to resist hydrogen sulphide stress corrosion cracking, SSCc. The new grade, Soo-95SS, demonstrates NACE Tensile threshold values greater than 90% specified minimum yield strength, SMYS, and NACE Bent Beam values in excess of 12.7 x 1()4 psi. The new Soo-9588 grade also exhibits superior collapse and notch toughness values. IntroductionIn recent years, a trend toward casing grade specialization has resulted in the introduction of numerous proprietary grades designed specifically for particular production environments, In response, Algoma Steel has developed, as part of a "" grade for service"" philosophy, two new 95 ksi minimum yield grades. The two grades are Soo-95, High Collapse (HC), and Sour Service (SS). This paper describes the development of Soo-95 Sour Service.Four main objectives were established:1. Definition of the steelmaking and continuous cast processing practices2. Determination of the acceptable maximum and minimum levels for all chemical elements3. Definition of special processing requirements4. Definition of the physical characteristics and ranges of the product properties.This paper provides a description of the experimental approach, followed by a presentation and discussion of the trial results . A working group from Anglo American, BHP Billiton, Rio Tinto and Xstrata reviewed supply and demand for graduates from mining education departments in countries where they normally recruit: Australia, Canada, Chile, Western Europe, South Africa and USA. Departments are typically small and increasingly unsustainable, resulting in a steady rate of closure. Supply and demand for graduates in the minerals industry is cyclical, with supply lagging behind demand and trending downwards. Currently, supply is tight and the industry is trying to expand with an ageing workforce. Greater collaboration between universities and within the industry is recommended to address these issues.

"In 1982, a study was initiated to investigate relationships between bonus and accidents in Quebec underground mines. In 1983, the study was expanded to include the impact of age and experience on accidents.The paper will describe the methodology followed in gathering information at ten mines from three mining camps in the Province of Quebec, and its transfer to data banks for subsequent treatment. Multifactorial analysis of nine variable files for the ten mines has shown: that age, experience and seniority are linked; that total working hours are tied with overtime; that bonus is linked to the main activity of the miner, and not to accidents. The most tangible factors affecting accidents seem to be the introductory training and subsequent retraining at regular intervals."

"The Geology of the Cochenour Willans mine, Red Lake district, was described by J. P. Nowlan in the Jubilee Volume. The complexity and intense alteration of the rocks obscured any clear relationship between ore and structure, and Nowlan recognized that future work might greatly modify the ideas then existing. This has proved to be the case. Subsequent detailed work has established the stratigraphic sequence in the Keewatin formations which are the host rocks of the orebodies, and has shown that the principal orebodies are confined to two adjoining bands of tuff.On this basis, it is now possible to map the complex structures with greatly increased accuracy. The amount of drilling and underground exploration required to find new ore has been much reduced, and indicated ore reserves are now substantially greater than at any time in the past. "Crushing and screening theory and application has remained fairly consistent in the last 50 years. The application of such equipment is guided by varied formulaic conventions and rules that due to the entropic nature of the process, remains more an art than a science. The variability of conditions creates an environment in which trial and error becomes the principal means of process balance and control. This paper illustrates some of the theories behind the process, plus other assumptions, postulates, myths and misconceptions that exist within the crushing and screening industry.INTRODUCTIONContinuous material balance calculations are habitually performed in the design of new comminution circuits as well as in the valuation of existing circuits. A continuous material balance calculation is one in which the input rate of material is equal to the output rate for each unit functioning in the circuit. At continuous analysis, there is no accumulation or losses of material within the system, as it is when performing a discrete event analysis.In order to produce viable and manageable mine-to-mill material, whether it is ready to leach or ready to mill, we must reduce the material in a series of stages. The power demand increases as the material size decreases, as it is when folding a piece of paper successively. As with the paper, there is a crushing size limitation that is a consequence of the mineral properties such as work index, moisture, viscoelasticity, etc. Comprehensive knowledge of crushing plants in both the aggregate and the mining industries show that, after three stages of crushing, a particle size distribution originating from a blasted deposit can be reduced from an nominal maximum size of 500 mm to a nominal maximum size of 12 mm. if the last stage of crushing is set in closed circuit, the screen openings will be able to yield a smaller top size.Achieving steady and continuous material balance poses major difficulties as crusher lose their settings, screens blind or peg, and material characteristics change geographically or seasonally. Overloading conditions in crushers and screens are nothing but counterproductive, and the net losses of an unbalanced circuit can be overlooked when mining operators are paying a lot more attention to the evermore complex systems downstream.It is not simply the crushing of the mineral but achieving the right size for the downstream milling process that will yield the maximum amount of energy savings."
