Solid fuel, usually coke or anthracite, is commonly added to ground iron ore fines in the pelletising process to reduce the amount of burner fuel required and the maximum firing temperature, while maintaining pellet strength and the productivity of the pelletising plant. However, the use of coke and coal contribute to the production of greenhouse gases (eg carbon dioxide) and are a source of NOx and SOx emissions. Utilising wood biomass / wood char is one methodology CSIRO Minerals is investigating as an alternative to coke and coal, as it is a renewable energy source that is very reactive, has a low ash content and the potential to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases from the iron and steel-making process. Previous work has established that charcoal can effectively replace coke in the sintering process (Lovel et al, 2005), and the following experimental work aims to demonstrate that it can also provide an adequate replacement for coke and coal in the pelletising process. The paper presents the results of an experimental testwork program comparing the behaviour of fired pellets containing traditional solid fuels and charcoal. The physical properties of the pellets are compared in terms of their compressive strength, tumble and abrasion indices and the reduction properties. A qualitative assessment of the pellet microstructures is also presented.

The chemistry and mechanisms of cementation, activated carbon, resins, electrowinning, solvent extraction and pressure reduction are examined. "THE property of Red Mountain Mines Limited is located 11/2 miles north and west of the town of Rossland, in southern British Columbia. The mine is situated on the flank of Red mountain, famous in pioneer days as the site of a number of profitable gold-copper producers. Mining and milling commenced in May, 1966, and by the first of July the concentrator was treating close to its average design capacity of 400 tons per day. The following description of the property and its operations is divided into three parts, dealing respectively with geology, mining and milling.GeologyAll the known ore reserves of Red Mountain Mines occur on the Coxey claim, on the west slope of Red mountain. Although there are indications of molybdenite mineralization elsewhere on the Company's property, these have not been developed.The Coxey and adjoining areas are underlain by the Mount Roberts formation of the Rossland volca-nics. This formation consists of an interbedded series of volcanic and sedimentary rocks, mostly brecciated and silicified near the ore zone, and all intruded by igneous rocks which occur in various forms, and vary in composition from basic to acid. The country rock in the vicinity of the mineralization seems to be mostly a volcanic, approximately andesitic in composition, and possibly a surface flow. There is much banding, some of which is undoubtedly due to tuff and agglomerate layers, and some to narrow, siliceous, sedimentary horizons such as the surface exposure of the main ""A"" orebody, much of which was a thin capping of greyish banded rock that looked like quartzite. The drill holes also intersected occasional layers of black, argillaceous quartzite, sometimes altered to a greenish colour. The whole assemblage has been silicified with varied intensity, sometimes to such an extent as to have obscured or obliterated the original characteristics. The mineralized zone has also been strongly brecciated, the fragments varying in size from less than an inch up to large masses, best described as a mega-breccia. Anomalous results obtained in drilling, such as sedimentary sections that do not appear in adjoining holes, may sometimes be due to the presence of these large blocks, no longer in their original position. The whole volcanic unit is thus very complex and confusing. For practical purposes, the ore may be said to occur in a greenstone formation with minor sedimentary interbeds and considerable later igneous material."

This is the second review of developments in coal mining engineering (see C.I.M .M. Transactions, Vol. LI, 1948, pp. 262- 264) and covers the period from October, 1948, to January, 1950. Mechanization The period under review was characterized by the intensive development of appliances providing for complete mechanization of coal-face operations. A variety of machines are being evolved or have already been placed on the market which embody the principle of 'continuous mining'. This trend can be observed in all coal producing countries. In the United States, two continuous mining machines have been developed for entry and room application and by the end of 1 949 were being used in a number of mines. These are the Joy Continuous Miner in which the coal is ripped from the face by means of multiple cutter chains, and the Jeffrey Colmol employing cutters on rotating arms for chipping the coal from the face. The Joy machine is made in tw6l models, 34-in. and 48-in. high and designed for a range of seam thicknesses from 3-ft. -t-in. to 4-ft. 6-in. and from 4-ft. 6-in. to 8ft., respectively. Some experience has been gained with this machine and accounts of its performance are already appearing in the technical literature. The Jeffrey-Colmol has a more limited range of working height. The first model, 38-in. high, was designed for seams about 4 feet in thick11ess but more recently the 28-in. low model has been placed on the market for seams 2-ft. 6-in, to 3-ft. 4-in. in thickness. Conventional mobile loading machines of the gathering-arm type are continuing to yield high production under suitable conditions, and improvements or modifications of the basic principle are embodied in new machines as, for example, the Jeffrey mobile (conveyor) loader with extensible (gathering-arm) head developed for conveyor mining.

This paper discusses the application of Load-Haul-Dump (LHD) machine teleoperation in combination with a guidance system for single operator control of multiple IJIDs. A system accomplishing these goals has been tested at Copper Cliff North Mine of Inco Limited. This development uses a high-speed, high-capacity production network to teleoperate an LHD during loading and dumping by using 3D video and radio remote control. Following loading, the operator dispatches the LHD using an automatic guidance system to traverse the drifts to the orepass. Remote dumping is done at the ore pass and then the machine returns to repeat the procedure. This has significant productivity gains and improvements in safety. Productivity is improved because operators are involved only in the loading and dumping part of the process. This frees the operators to utilize their time more effectively, loading or dumping a particular machine, while other machines with guidance systems continue to work travelling and/or automatically dumping ore in the ore passes. Safety is improved as the operator is located on a remote control station. Automatic dumping will be incorporated as a future development.

"This paper describes the conversion of conventional froth flotation cells to open-trough type bank cells, with 'buried' vertical metal partitions. These changes have resulted in: total froth removal along the full length of each bank of cells; extended flotation cell retention times; and has extended the life of the metal components, particularly towards the upper flotation cell areas.INTRODUCTIONOver the past twenty years, the flotation cells used at Falconbridge Limited, Sudbury operations concentrators, have gone through major physical changes. The various concentrators generally started with 100 cubic foot Denver Sub 'A' flotation cells. From these units, we progressed to 'converted' DR units, and/or Denver DR units, if purchased new. (Figures 1, 2, 3)In 1980, the Strathcona concentrator started to pay more attention to the 'front end' rougher flotation cells. Initially, the converted DR flotation cells had 'cut-outs' removed (Figure 4) at all upper vertical cell partitions, towards the ff9th lip areas, in order to get additional froth removal."

In this work, strontium doped lanthanum ferrite (LSF) and their composite cathodes were fabricated by screen printing on yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) electrolytes. Their electrochemical properties were evaluated by using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and steady-state polarization methods. All the cathodes were screened by comparing their total polarization resistances before and after activation processes at different temperatures. The improved LSF composite cathodes were also screen-printed on YSZ/NiO half cells to fabricate solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs), which have reached the output power densities of 170 mW/cm2 at 650 °C, 230 mW/cm2 at 700 °C, 304 mW/cm2 at 750 °C and 388 mW/cm2 at 800 °C.

Cavity cleaning during anode change generates a material that consists of anode cover material and cryolite melts. This material is scooped and placed in bins for transport and further processing and recycling as fresh anode cover material. Typical processing methods in use involve cooling of the hot cavity bath in bins, with or without emission treatment systems, until it is adequate to be processed and grinded to the required particle size distribution. Handling of the hot and cooled cavity bath material can be labour intensive. It also generates significant air emissions which contain particulate and gaseous fluorides. With the advent of the Aluminerie Alouette smelter Phase II expansion, the hot cavity bath tonnage to be processed increased to 700 t/day and maintaining existing practices was not satisfactory. This article presents a novel process implemented at the Alouette smelter where cavity bath is processed as a hot material directly from the potlines ( 600-800°C range), sized, cooled and then processed in the existing cold bath treatment plant. The system is designed to process 36 t/h, is fully automated and requires limited monitoring from operations. Implementing this new system in a Browrifield environment imposed numerous constraints for space, interfaces with existing operations, commissioning and ramp-up. It is presently operating at approximately 80% availability and is easily meeting the requirements of the potlines. This system has significantly improved the workplace environment in the bath treatment area and reduced the overall particulate and gaseous fluorides emissions at Alouette. "IntroductionThe Key Lake uranium-nickel ore deposits are located in the Athabasca Basin of northern Saskatchewan, Canada (Fig. 1). Many papers have been published on Key Lake in the past (Dahlkarnp and Tan, 1977; Kirchner and Tan, 1977; Kirchner et al., 1980). Immediately after its incorporation in 1968, Uranerzbergbau GmbH, a German holding company, set up exploration subsidiaries in Australia, the United States and Canada. This account reviews those exciting years starting with the concept to explore the rim of the Athabasca Basin in Saskatchewan, and leading up to the discovery of the deposits in 1975 and 1976.A few summary statements can be made:• The discovery of Key Lake resulted from a very systematic exploration approach and the persistence of Uranerz, the operator. • Cluff Lake and Rabbit Lake had been discovered some seven years before, but it was the discovery of the Key Lake deposits which brought Saskatchewan to the forefront to become Canada's foremost uranium producing province.• The experiences gained at Key Lake, which were subsequently published, triggered the discovery of many other deposits of similar, or even larger, size than Key Lake. The spatial relationship of those deposits to graphitic conductors and hydrothermal alteration zones are presently the most effective indicators for locating new deposits - indicators which were first recognized at Key Lake.• Key Lake is, and will remain for some years to come, the largest producing high-grade uranium mine in the world."

"Sorption process plays a significant role for solute retardation in rock fractures. In this paper, for the aim to investigate the effect of sorption on solute transport in a single rough fracture, a 2D model of representative single rock fracture was built and its roughness was statistically characterized based on the measured data of rock surface topography by laser scanning. A Finite Volume Method (FVM) code was developed to solve the Navier-Stokes (NS) equations and transport equation for numerical modelling the process of fluid flow and solute transport in the rock fracture model. Two groups of simulations were conducted: with and without the consideration of the sorption process with different average flow velocities. The results show that the surface roughness increased the complexities of flow fields, and the non-linear sorption process plays a significant role in the retardation of solute transport through rock fractures. The sorption process caused an obvious lagging time in both the solute concentration fields (plumes) and corresponding breakthrough curves. This lagging time increases with the distance from the inlet boundary, and relatively decreases with the increase of mean velocities. INTRODUCTIONFluid flow and solute transport in fractured rocks is an important research topic for performance and risk assessments for rock engineering projects concerning geo-environment safety, such as radioactive waste disposal, mining, geothermal extraction, reservoir engineering and other contaminant transport processes in geosphere (Berkowitz 2002).The solute transport in the rock fractures mainly involve the advection, surface sorption, matrix diffusion, dispersion, radioactive decay and chemical reactions, governed by general transport equations (e.g. Bodin et al., 2003). Among these transport phenomena, the sorption on the fracture walls can alter solute migration between the fractures, and play an important role in natural retention of solute transport (Weber et al., 1991; Wels et al., 1998; Kumar 2007; Dai et al., 2012). The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of sorption on the solute transport in a single rock fracture with rough surfaces. More complex transport processes, such as matrix diffusion, dispersions, radioactive decay and chemical reactions, are not included in this study."

"While thiocyanate (SCN-) is used in a number of industrial processes (production of polyacrylonitrile filaments, synthesis of agricultural chemicals and certain metallurgical solvent extraction and flotation circuits) it is recognized more as an undesirable by-product associated with ' the metallurgical industry. Thiocyanate is present at low concentrations in some waste streams from the iron and steel industry. Of particular significance is the formation of thiocyanate during cyanidation of gold and silver ores, concentrates, tailing s and residues. The thiocyanate levels present in the resulting effluents may range from a few mg/I to several thousand mg/I.At present, thiocyanate does not appear to be as hazardous in the environment as cyanide (CN-) at the same concentration although its interaction with other species and resulting decomposition of products may be unacceptable. Of course the presence of thiocyanate in the leaching circuit and ultimately in the effluent streams may add considerably to the oxidative requirments of any non-selective treatment process for cyanidation wastes.With respect to the thiocyanate as it relates to the cyanidation process, two aspects are evident. Thiocyanate forms and persists in the cyanidation circuit resulting in a ""fouling"" condition with subsequent loss of leaching activity. In order to reduce or control this problem, it is common practice for some mills to discharge daily as much as 20% of the barren leach liquor. Besides contributing to fouling of the leach liquor the formation of thiocyanate represents an irreversible loss of reagent cyanide. It is noteworthy that in some present or proposed mill practice reagent cyanide loss through thiocyanate formation may reach 50%(1). The purpose of this paper is to discus s the application of controlled electrooxidation of thiocyanate with the view of suggesting a process for regenerating cyanide from waste thiocyanate(2). The paper describes the important theoretical aspects and presents experimental data obtained for thiocyanate electrooxidation using both small and large scale electrochemical reactors. Some economic conclusions are presented."

"While bioleaching of pyrite concentrates has been successfully used in industry to liberate gold from the sulphide matrix for subsequent cyanidation, the same technology cannot be recommended for leaching chalcopyrite concentrates for copper recovery. It will be shown to be uneconomical and cannot compete with pressure leaching technology. Data on the pilot plants that were constructed for this purpose and were shut down will be given.INTRODUCTIONBacterial leaching has been successfully applied for heap leaching of low-grade copper ores (Habashi, 1978, 1999). One of the major operations is that at Bingham in Utah (Figure 1). The leach solution collected at the bottom of the heap is extracted by organic solvents and the strip solution is electrolyzed to get high purity copper. The process was extended to treat auriferous pyrite concentrates to liberate gold and render it amenable to cyanidation by a process known as BIOX (Marsden & House, 2006; Lunt & Briggs, 2005).BIOX plants currently or recently in operation are the following:??Ashanti Goldfields Company, Ghana. Designed with an initial capacity of treating 720 tonnes of concentrate per day, the Sansu plant has since been expanded and currently has four modules processing 960 tonnes per day in all. It is by far the largest biooxidation plant in the world. The capital cost of the plant totalled US $25 million (1994 terms) and the operating cost is currently US $17/tonne milled.??Fairview, South Africa. The plant at the Fairview mine in Barberton, which was the initial pilot plant, has been fully operational since 1986. It was originally designed to treat 10 tonnes/day of concentrate but with the success of the project this has been increased to 55 tonnes per day. With the purchase of Fairview by Avgold’s Eastern Transvaal Consolidated, Avgold concluded a licensing agreement with Gold Fields, formerly known as Gencor, entitling it to use the BIOX technology to treat itsconcentrate.??Saõ Bento, Brazil. A BIOX plant was recently in operation in Brazil at the Saõ Bento Mine where a pressure oxidation circuit is used to treat the refractory flotation concentrate. This plant has confirmed the viability of combining bio-oxidation with pressure oxidation as a cost-effective method ofincreasing capacity at an existing oxidation plant.??Wiluna, Australia. The plant at Wiluna Gold Mine, Western Australia, was commissioned in 1993. Although originally designed to treat 115 tonnes per day of concentrate this has subsequently been increased to 158.??Other plants at Tamboraque in Peru, Harbour Lights and at Youanami in Australia have been commissioned recently."

"The neutralization process of SO2 from coal burning plants is a well-defined technology using limestone to form CaSO4 according to the following reaction: CaCO3 + SO2(g) + 1/2O2(g) = CaSO4 This paper presents the results of a study carried out to validate the option of capturing SO2 using gases from a non-ferrous smelter; SO2 content was up to 12% using a three-stage fluidized bed reactor. The difference in SO2 content affects equilibrium conditions and kinetics, rendering a direct extrapolation of the high efficiency achieved for low SO2 content impossible. The R&D program consisted of a laboratory study using a semi-pilot operation of a one-stage fluidized bed reactor and the construction and operation of a three-step reactor prototype. Results show that the reaction proceeds according to the unreacted core model that imposes a compromise between CaCO3 conversion and SO2 capture. For high SO2 capture, the calcine from the reactor contained CaSO4 and CaO. A complete capture of SO2 from gases with 8 vol.% can be achieved with a mean reaction time of two hours at 800°C."

PROSPECTING is popularly supposed to be surrounded with an air of romance and adventure. The word 'prospecting' brings to mind high mountains, northern lakes, and aeroplanes. A note of urgency has been added to this by the war, particularly in the case of strategic, minerals. Prospecting for strategic minerals in a modern mine in full production, although it may Jack the romance of travel in little-known places, has the advantage of having all the necessary machinery at hand and ready to go into action at a moment's notice. HISTORY Tin was discovered in the Sullivan ore in 1925, when a white streak was noticed on a pilot table which was being used to check the amount of galena in the tailing. The mineral which made up this streak was identified as cassiterite. The amount of tin in the ore is so small that, while of scientific interest, it was considered to be of very little economic importance. Nevertheless, several attempts were made to learn something of the occurrence during times when other work was nor pressing. These studies were dropped when anything came up that seemed more important.

"This study has been developed to illustrate the trend and pattern of distribution applying to the quantities and costs of the fossil fuels used, and the related amounts of electricity generated, in the thermal segment of the Canadian electric utility industry.Traditionally, Canada's requirements for electric energy have been preponderantly met by hydraulic power. The need for augmented supplies of thermally generated power has mainly developed since the close of World War Il-in an era that has seen drastic decline in the production of indigenous coal and buoyant expansion in the supply of oil and natural gas. Although coal currently is faced with serious competition from the fluid fuels, the utility industry in particular promises an advancing market for coal, because of its abundant resource, at prices less likely to show sharp increase. For Canada as a whole, this trend has been progressive since 1959, and, unbelievable as it may now seem, the extent of the advance by 1975, particularly in Ontario and the Prairie Provinces, may well be as much, or even more, than the present rate of consumption for all purposes.The text and the tables and charts are arranged to focus attention on: the growth of thermal genera ting capability; the historical trend in consumption of fuel and the related production of electricity; patterns of distribution by types of fuel and thermal capacity; the relationship of steam to other sources of thermal capacity; and the quantities, costs and related percentages of electricity generated by types and kinds of fuel used, both regionally and provincially."

A GPS-based traffic awareness and collision avoidance system has been implemented at mines with long, narrow access roads to help avoid accidents involving two approaching vehicles or vehicles following too close. A simple display in the cab of each outfitted vehicle gives an indication of oncoming traffic and a voice announcement indicates the type of vehicle that is coming as far out as 300 meters. Advanced warning of approaching vehicles is increasing driver awareness, especially around blind corners and in adverse weather such as heavy fog, snow, or rain. Speeding alarms have also been implemented and are especially critical as a vehicle approaches reduced speed areas near single-lane bridges or tight curves. A description of the system, safety improvements seen since its introduction, and implementation challenges will be discussed.

In the this study, surface segregation of Mg and Ca with Mg addition range from 5 to 10wt% in Al-Mg alloys with Mg+Al2Ca master alloy and its effect on the oxidation resistance were investigated. The addition of Mg+Al2Ca master alloy as the Mg alloying element led to the surface enrichment of Mg and Ca during high temperature oxidation. As a result of the oxidation test by TGA, the oxidation resistance of all the examined alloys was significantly improved with increasing Al2Ca content. The weight change of Al2Ca added Al-5Mg and Al-7.5Mg alloys indicated the complete oxidation resistance during the whole oxidation test time, while a slight weight increase was shown in the case of Al-Mg alloys even with Al2Ca addition. The improvement of the oxidation resistance in Al2Ca added alloys may be attributed to the formation of the protective oxide layer mixed with CaO and MgO on the surface.

"The Manibridge Mill is unique in its treatment of relatively high grade nickel-copper ore because in the mill design are included one 10' diam. x 10' Maxwell cell, and three 12' diam. x 12' tank cells. These large cells are used as rougher-scavenger cells. Three 8' diam. x 8' tank cells as well are used for cleaning and recleaning of the tank cell concentrate.Flexibility of flow is the main criterion in the tank cell circuit. Targets from these cells are a high grade nickel-copper product with a minimum of talcose gangue.The operation of the tank cells has been encouraging and they have performed well with both low and high grade heads, yielding a high grade concentrate product.Manibridge Tank CellsDescription:The tank cells at Manibridge consist of one 10' x 10' Maxwell cell, three 12' x 12' tank cells, and three 8' x 8' tank cells. The four large cells are currently being used as rougher scavenger cells. The three small cells are used as cleaner cells.Both sets of tank cells consist of Denver steel tank and Super Agitator Mechanisms with steel beam super-structures. The agitator mechanism has a totally enclosed ball bearing spindle housing with a cold rolled steel shaft, and a stanclard standpipe with adjustable collar.The air rings for the tanks were fabricated by Nelson Machinery. Both large and small cells have injection rings with equally spaced air holes in the bottom centre line of the ring.Air is supplied to the tank cells by a Dresser Clark low pressure air blower.The following is a table of pertinent data on the tank cells:"

"The Central Patricia mine is in the greenstone belt north of lake Sc. Joseph in northwestern Ontario. It is 90 miles north of Allanwater on the Canadian National railway and 220 miles east of the Manitoba boundary. The unusual feature of the ore of this mine is that the gold does not occur in quartz but in sulphide minerals filling fractures in iron formation.AREAL GEOLOGYThe rocks of the area in which the mine occurs belong to the Early Precambrian. They consist · of andesite lavas and tuff interbedded with greywacke-like sediments and iron formation . A siliceous phase of the sediments lying north and south of the greywacke enclosing the ore-bearing iron formation in places resembles a sheared and sericitized quartz porphyry. This is shown in the legend of Fig. 1 as quartz porphyry and quartzite, but it is possible that the quartz porphyry-like phase is sediment. A northwest- striking dyke of diabase crosses the property 3,000 feet east of the shaft ( Fig. 1).IRON FORMATIONAlthough there are numerous bands of iron formation in the v1cm1ty of the mine, ore has been found to date in only one main and two lesser zones. The iron formation bands range in width from a few inches to 60 feet, and are interrupted along their strike by gaps that are parallel and rake to the east at about 65°. The iron formation is definitely banded and laminated."
