"Excavation, the principal mining process, 'which hitherto has been based largely on the intuition and logic of mining men, is increasingly receiving the attention of engineers and scientists versed in rock mechanics. The paper intro-duce the principles of this science in simplified form, directed both to underground and open-pit mining. Reference is made to the large annual tonnage from ore and rock excavations, which in 1967 were responsible for 250 million tons of mineral production in Canada.The urge to transform excavation into a continuous instead of an interrupted process is discussed with references to the various types of energies employed or proposed in rock breakage or excavation. Due to the rapid decay of applied energy in the discontinuous and heterogeneous rock environment, large confined blasts proposed for in-situ mining do not give much expectation of success as yet. Raises and ventilating shafts are already bored in reasonably hard rock. Tunnelling machines will be used for drifting and cross-cutting in the future, but continuous mining machines of the cuttmg and shearing type are not 'around the corner' for stoping typical orebodies. On the other hand, bed mining, particularly of coal, has led the way in continuous mining, and Remotely Operated Long-wall Face (ROLF) experiments are progressing in an encouraging way. Some reflections on the mining environment in relation to the human element are made."

"It is easy to throw darts at government - and government often deserves to be a target. This month, Tax Notes examines tax legislation from a different angle, and sees some bright spots.The following article is based on a paper presented by the author at the International Gold Symposium in Rio de Janeiro in August 1989Introduction""No man's life, liberty, or property are safe while the Legislature is in session.”With one federal government, ten provincial governments, and two territorial governments all claiming to have constitutional rights to tax and otherwise regulate Canada's mining industry, and with each of these thirteen governments pursuing their respective rights with some vigor, government involvement in one way or another is an accepted way of life in the industry. While one's initial reaction to government involvement in an industry might be one of scepticism or fear, generally speaking the federal, provincial, and territorial governments in Canada tend to be pro-mining. They recognize the importance of the mining industry to Canada, especially in terms of job creation and exports. It is not surprising, then, to find that an array of valuable fiscal incentives are available to the industry through federal and provincial legislation.This paper summarizes the principal incentives that are inherent in Canada's tax legislation, as well as the Canadian Exploration Incentive Program. Although it is beyond the scope of this paper to deal with all of the incentives that are available, it is noted that various forms of federal or provincial assistance are also available outside of specific legislation, through negotiation with government departments. This latter type of assistance is generally directed toward helping with the cost of infrastructure such as roads or hydro lines, or Jess often toward loan guarantees or similar financing assistance."

"This generic study has been developed in response to the frequently asked question, ""That is the best treatment route for refractory gold ore?"". The study has developed operating and capital costs for many potential treatment routes and they are presented here in a generic form. All costs are in relation to the value of 1.00 given to the base case, a 1000 mtpd bio-oxidation plant, operating at 25% solids and 72 hours residence time.There is unfortunately no simple answer to the above quest ions. The treatment of refractory ores is a complex subject, with many variables, such as mineralogy, chemistry, environment and tonnage. However this study does offer information and relative numbers that we believe will be of assistance to gold metallurgists in obtaining a ""first shot"" at estimating costs.Equally, this technology is a rapidly evolving one. As more plants are commissioned, and test programs completed, better data is constantly being generated. For a generic study of this type to remain useful it will need regular updating and adjustment."

This paper outlines the position and capabilities of Western Canada's bituminous coal industry, and indicates the increasing importance of Japan as an export market. The use of coal in Japan is reviewed, especially as regards future trends, and an appraisal is made of Canadian coal in comparison with domestic Japanese coal and imports from other countries. The importance of maintaining a solid nucleous within the Canadian bituminous coal industry is emphasized. I N RECENT years, Japan has emerged as a valuable market for Canadian exports. The first major product exported in volume to Japan was wheat, which has become very successfully established in Japanese markets. Following this, iron ore gradually found a market in Japan, with exports usually based on long-term contracts. "Quebec Iron Ore Limited (QIO), a subsidiary of Champion Iron Limited (Champion), secured assets in early 2016 from the previous Bloom Lake operations in the heart of the Labrador Trough region of Northern Quebec, Canada. A plan was developed to bring the Bloom Lake facility back in operation once the iron ore market conditions improved. The project restart involved several aggressive moves to change operational effectiveness, one of which was the utilization of the existing Phase 1 Plant with an upgraded process flowsheet and equipment. The production target was 7.4 million tonnes per annum of 66% iron ore concentrate with an approximate 10% increase in iron ore recovery. The Phase 1 upgraded flowsheet was initially based on review of historical Phase 1 data and pilot testing data undertaken during the original Phase 1 operation and was finalized once additional metallurgical test work and process modeling was carried out by Mineral Technologies in late 2016. The final upgraded flowsheet is comprised of rougher spirals, rougher middling scavenging spirals, and an up-current classifier (UCC) with overflow scavenging spiral stage. A portion of the gravity circuit tailings treated by a series of wet high intensity magnetic separators (WHIMS) to boost overall iron recovery. This paper will describe the efforts taken to test and design the Bloom Lake Phase 1 upgraded flowsheet and report on the plant performance since commissioning in first quarter of 2018.SITE HISTORY The Bloom Lake iron mine property is located approximately 13 km north of Fermont, Quebec, and 10 km north of the Mont Wright iron ore mining complex, property of ArcelorMittal Mines Canada. The Bloom Lake mine facilities include a 32 km railway to efficiently transport the high-quality iron concentrate to a loading port located in Sept-Iles, Quebec. The Bloom Lake property was first explored in 1951 and went through multiple minor exploration campaigns by different companies up until 1998. A major exploration program was conducted by Quebec Cartier Mining (QCM) in 1998. This program included line cutting, surveying, diamond drilling, geological mapping, mini-bulk sampling, bench-scale preliminary metallurgical test work and preparation of a “mineral resource” estimate."

"There is a number of comminution tests commonly used in the mining industry. Many of the tests are used for a particular grinding model or mill sizing program and are incompatible with other tests of different models. This paper provides an overview of the commonly used grinding and crushing tests, which models (or practitioners) use a particular combination of tests and draws some relationships between the incompatible tests based on the DJB Consultants Inc. database of projects.Case studies will demonstrate similarities and differences between major mining districts with some comments about homogeneous and heterogeneous behaviour within the grindability results.INTRODUCTIONThere are a number of bench-scale grindability tests in use for sizing and predicting throughput for grinding circuits. Part of the reason for this variety is there are a number of different grinding models in use in the Industry, and those models operate using incompatible test results as input (Doll and Barratt, 2008).By using the database of testwork in the DJB Consultants, Inc. (DJB) Millpower 2000 database (see Table 1), some of the more commonly used tests are compared and relationships will be drawn."

"Palabora Mining Copper (PMC) has two autogenous mills that have been in operation since 1976. The mills were originally designed to treat 30 000 t/d of open cast copper ore in a closed circuit with cyclones. As the ore body went deeper the open cast method of mining was changed to block caving, a consequence of this was the dolerite content (hardest barren material) increased significantly, increasing the production rate of pebbles and thus reducing the milling capacity. In order to cope with the increased ore hardness and to increase mill capacity, a second ball milling stage and pebble crushing were incorporated to the circuit. The above actions created new challenges to the circuit operation and bottlenecks in different areas of the milling circuit.This paper reports the holistic work performed on the Palabora autogenous milling circuit including the implementation of a mill constraint control scheme, the implementation of a pebble removal system from the circuit and a new circuit configuration."

"Traditional techniques for valuing resource projects companies have been primarily based on discounted cashflow methods (DCF) or by comparison to similar projects with an apparent market capitalization. Many resource projects are really forms of options to invest rather than a future cashflow stream. Employing the DCF method to value a resource project which is really an option to invest, can dramatically underestimate the real value of the project. The analytical tools required to evaluate options, while more complicated than the usual spreadsheets used for DCF, are becoming more easily available and usable by managers. This paper will discuss the background of options valuation and some of the tools which will make it easier for managers to estimate the value of projects and companies which have significant real option values.ResumeBob McKnight is a graduate of the University of British Columbia in Geological Engineering, supplemented by an MBA from Simon Fraser University. They were familiar to Roman and Phoenician traders who were shipping cargoes from Mediterranean seaports. In the financial world, options are types of contracts that generally include the right, but not the obligation, to buy or sell a share, currency or commodity. The underlying commodity price or share price changes are assumed to be lognormally distributed. In this context, options are of two general types, ""call"" options and ""put"" options. Call options have the characteristic of having the right to buy a tradable commodity or currency at a predetermined price for a specified period of time. For the owner of call options, they become more valuable as the price of the underlying commodity increases. For the seller of call options, these options become an increasing liability as commodity prices rise, since there is the obligation to sell the commodity at a predetermined (perhaps lower-than-market) price. This characteristic of call options recently became high profile with the sharp rise in gold prices last year. The value of gold call options sold by certain producers increased their associated liabilities to the point where margin calls were made."

The complex ore body at CNRL?s Horizon mine presents some unique challenges in managing ore and waste delivery. With 25m x 25m ore blocks shovels often take bucket loads from multiple blocks to fill one truck load. With CNRL monitoring 22 different qualities per material a precise calculation of the blended quality of ore on the back of each individual truck is essential to meet the daily blend requirements at the plant. Additionally, one of these qualities must be closely monitored and controlled at a singular level as delivery of certain grade and quantities can cause serious disruptions at the plant. The waste material also requires special handling and delivery for its use in dyke construction for tailings impoundment. Shale materials used in the construction contain high levels of saline that must be contained to prevent seepage into ground water. This paper will discuss how the use of Wenco?s survey-grade GNSS system on shovels, its dispatching algorithm, and fleet management applications give CNRL the ability and confidence to control and report on these three issues.

"The expansion undertaken at Selbaie in 1985 necessitated an adaptation and expansion of the equipment maintenance system. This paper relates briefly the stages of transformation of the maintenance administrative structures, work methods and tools. The maintenance in a mechanized mine requires an expenditure level in the order of 20% of the total operating cost of the enterprise. Thus, the maintenance organization was modified to apply more computerized planning and follow-up, and the role of preventative maintenance was further advanced.IntroductionAs far as maintenance is concerned at Selbaie, the scenario described herein is a resume of the current situation. Although positive results have been obtained, this outline is in no way a detailed account of a fail-proof maintenance system.Once zone A-I was put into production, the expansion the mine experienced in 1985 had a direct impact on the equipment maintenance system. As centralized as it was in the beginning, the system is now partially decentralized.The over-all changes to the maintenance department demonstrate the flexibility required by organizations in new situations. In spite of the exceptional results obtained before the expansion, it became evident that both the maintenance and production sectors would have to be combined. In doing so, a more appropriate coordination of maintenance work could be obtained and the maintenance staff would obtain a more detailed knowledge of the equipment in each sector. In addition, by keeping the general and specialized departments centralized, it was possible to offset the negative effect s of a decentralized system, namely too much manpower."

Emission of perfluorocarbon gases, CF4 and C2F6, produced during anode effects from aluminum electrolytic cells are a significant part of the total equivalent CO2 emitted by aluminum plants. With the current concerns about global warming, the reduction of these PFC gases is a key issue in reducing greenhouse gases for a smelter and achieving GHG emission agreement goals. This paper will present the approach taken by the Alcoa vertical-stud Soderberg plant in Baie-Comeau to reduce GHG emissions generated during anode effects and close emission gaps with other Alcoa Soderberg plants. The approach has been to adapt the existing technology in place at the Baie-Comeau Soderberg plant. PFC emissions were lowered by reducing both the anode effect duration and frequency through different methods. Examples of change include: implementing skimming practices and wider side crust break area for better alumina dissolution in bath, increasing the ratio between reacted and pure alumina, reducing the time to declare anode effects in the potrooms, implementing best work practices and finally educating the workforce on the importance of reducing PFC emissions.

"AbstractA technique is described for preparation of palladium sponge and for spectrochemical analysis of the metal in this form. The precision and accuracy of the method are discussed. Analyses are compared with previous spectrochemical analyses of palladium in the black form. Good agreement was found in the two sets •of results and it is concluded that they are more reliable than wet chemical .analyses of the same material.IntroductionFOR SEVERAL YEARS the problem of platinum metal analysis by spectrochemical methods has been under investigation at the Spedtrographic Laboratory, Department of Geological Sciences, Queen's University. The problem, briefly -stated, is as follows: Samples of platinum, palladium,-rhodium, ruthenium, and iridium are received as fine metal powders, called sponge. Direct spectrographic analysis of this material has not been found satisfactory due to its heterogeneity •as regards contaminant metals, which may be present up to a total of one per •cent or more. Further-more, spectrographic standards are difficult to obtain and difficult to prepare accurately by adding weighed portions of contaminant metals to the sponge. The fact that •contaminant metals in original samples are probably alloyed with the major constituent is a further difficulty since complete fusion of these refractory metals proved impractical in the present case as a means of standard preparation. It •has, therefore, been found most satisfactory to dissolve the metals, prepare standards by addition of solutions of contaminant metals, and to reduce both standards and samples to a homogeneous form. A previous paper, by Hawley, Wark, Lewis and Ott (2) dealt with a method for spectrochemical analysis of platinum and palladium in their black form. Since completion of research on the black technique, the possibility of analyzing palladium accurately in its sponge form has• been investigated."

"""POTASH"" is a term applied to the compounds of the element potassium (K) and when used in agriculture and industry is ex-pressed in terms of potassium oxide (K2O), regardless of the actual com-position of the compound. When a chemical analysis is made of a fertilizer, the amount of K is deter-mined and then calculated to the equivalent amount of K2O. However, the compound K2O does not exist in nature. Most of the world's potash supply is derived from mineral deposits similar to those in Saskatchewan and New Mexico. However, there is some production from concentrated surface brines such as occur in Searles Lake, California; Salduro Marsh, Utah; the Dead Sea; and from well brines in Micl1igan."

"For the past twenty years significant progress has been made in bacterial leaching. In fact, a recent article in the Northern Miner has cited that nearly all new copper production is based on bioleaching. The bacteria that play the predominant role in bioleaching is an obligate chemolithoautotroph called thiobacillus ferrooxidans. These bacteria thrive in areas rich in sulphide and prefer low acid media. In the simplest sense, they metabolize sulphide converting it to sulphate either as acid or as soluble metal sulphates. This process is well known because these bacteria generate acid mine water. Over the last five( 5) years, we have been carrying out development work on creating optimum bioleach conditions for the extraction of metals from sulphide rich ores and concentrates. Recently, a study was carried out on a byproduct sulphide concentrate produced in a tin flowsheet developed for the Mt. Pleasant Mine of ADEX Mining Corp. The objective was to determine whether a bioleach process might successfully leach this sulphide material which contains copper, zinc, iron and, what is more important, trace metals such as Indium, Gallium, and Bismuth. The current work describes the successful recovery of these metals achieving extractions of more than 80% by applying bioleaching techniques. An overview of this technical program forms the basis of this paper.IntroductionBio-Oxidation of metal sulphides has emerged to be one of the leading edge hydrometallurgical processes for the economic extraction of metals from ore and concentrates. The fundamental process involves the bacterial assisted oxidation of sulphide to sulphate yielding metal sulphates which can be subsequently leached by conventional means. The bacteria that play the predominate role is an obligate chemolithoautotroph named thiobacillus ferrooxidans (TF). These bacteria thrive in areas rich in sulphide and occur naturally worldwide. In fact, TF is responsible for generating acid in water (acid mine water) from exposed sulphide surfaces primarily through the oxidation of pyrite. TF bacteria thrive under the proper conditions of temperature and oxygen supply in the presence of sulphides and populations in excess of a million per millilitre (ml) of solution are achievable. Typically, at room temperature, the bacteria will bio-oxidize in a pH range of 1.0 to 3.0. Today, bio-oxidation has been applied commercially with great success for the extraction of uranium, copper, and gold."

Sherritt Gordon and Cominco, with financial assistance from the Canadian Government through PAIT, have developed a hydrometallurgical process for refining copper from sulphide concentrates. The main objective of the project was to develop a process applicable to a wide range of concentrates with respect to copper content, other metals content and impurities, within the economic parameters set by present smelting and refining practice. Other important objectives were to recover sulphur in its elemental form and not as sulphur dioxide to assure improved hygienic conditions and a negligible impact on the environment. For the most abundant and relatively refractory chalcopyrite concentrates, the first step of the process is thermal activation with hydrogen to decompose chalcopyrite and pyrite, commonly associated with it, into more reactive sulphides more amenable to leaching. The iron is then selectively extracted by sulphuric acid leaching and subsequently rejected as jarosite. High-bornite concentrates do not require thermal activation and acid leaching; they are subjected to another hydrometallurgical iron removal step. The high-grade copper sulphide resulting from iron removal, and containing all of the initial precious metals, is then leached under oxygen pressure to produce elemental sulphur and copper sulphate solution . After suitable solution purification, the copper is recovered by high-current-density electrowinning as wire-grade product. Precious metals remain in the leach residue and are recovered after separation of the gangue materials and elemental sulphur. The laboratory and pre-piloting test work had indicated copper and precious metals recoveries comparable to those achieved in current practice. The process was shown to be suitable for handling relatively low-grade concentrates and, in addition, it was capable of high recoveries of associated zinc, molybdenum, nickel and cobalt in saleable form.

Removal of toxic anions from aqueous solution was studied using a Magnetic Ion Exchange (MIEX) resin which is a polyacrylic, strong base resin. Gravity based settling is made more efficient due to the magnetic nature of the resin which is advantageous over conventional ion exchange resins. In addition, the magnetic microspheres of MIEX have larger surface area in comparison to conventional ion exchange resins. Over the years MIEX has been successfully used and has gained significant popularity for efficiently removing dissolved organic matter from wastewater and groundwater. In the present study the efficiency of the MIEX resin was tested for the removal of chromium(VI), molybdenium(VI), vanadium(V) and arsenic(V) anions. Effects of pH (2-10) and temperature (25oC-55oC) were examined. In general, low solution pH values were favorable for anion uptake by MIEX. Except for chromium(VI), the metal ion uptake was significantly increased by the increase in solution temperature. The adsorption data were analysed on the basis of chemical speciation and heterogeneous kinetic models.

"Cobalt refining at Vale Canada (previously known as Inco) has been associated with Ni production. Because certain compounds of both metals carry risks for adverse health endpoints by inhalation exposure, it is critical to understand the aerosol concentrations of specific substances and the metallurgical processes through which they enter the air. Vale Canada has therefore decided to describe the histories of its Ni-related operations and to report industrial hygiene measurements when available. This paper describes electrolytic Co operations carried out at Port Colborne, Ontario (1954–1966), and provides aerosol measurements (1995–2008) for current Co electrowinning operations.RÉSUMÉ L’affinage du cobalt chez Vale Canada (anciennement Inco) a été associé à la production de nickel. "NI 43-101 is a rule that governs how issuers disclose scientific and technical information about mineral projects to the public in Canada. The disclosure standards apply to oral statements as well as written documents and websites. NI 43-101 does not apply to disclosure concerning petroleum, natural gas, bituminous sands or shales, groundwater, or coal be methane. NI 43-101 first came into force on Feb. 1, 2001 and was revised in December 30, 2005. As a “National Instrument”, the law has been passed in each provincial and territorial legislature across Canada.“PART 1 DEFINITIONS AND INTERPRETATION 1.1 Definitions - In this Instrument “adjacent property” means a property(a) in which the issuer does not have an interest;(b) that has a boundary reasonablyproximate to the propertybeing reported on; and (c) that has geological characteristics similar to those of the property being reported on; “data verification” means the process of confirming that data has been generated withproper procedures, has been accurately transcribed from the original source and is suitable to be used; “development property” means a property that is being prepared for mineral production and for which economic viability has been demonstrated by a feasibility study; “disclosure” means any oralstatement orwritten disclosure made by oron behalf of an issuer and intended to be, orreasonablylikely to be, made available to the public in a jurisdiction of Canada, whether or not filed under securitieslegislation, but does not include written disclosure that is made available to the public only by reason of having been filed with a government or agencyof government pursuant to a requirement of lawother than securities legislation; “early stage exploration property” means a property that has(a) no current mineral resources or mineral reserves defined; and (b) no drilling or trenching proposed; in a technical report being filed in a local jurisdiction; “exploration information” means geological, geophysical, geochemical, sampling, drilling, trenching, analytical testing,assaying, mineralogical, metallurgical and other similar information concerning a particular property that is derived fromactivities undertaken to locate, investigate, define or delineate a mineral prospect or mineral deposit; “feasibility study” means a comprehensive studyof a mineral deposit in which all geological, engineering, legal,operating, economic, social, environmental and other relevant factors are considered in sufficient detail that it could reasonably serve as the basis for a final decision by a financial institution to finance the development of the deposit for mineral production; “historical estimate” means an estimate of mineral resources or mineral reserves prepared prior to February 1, 2001;“IMMM Reporting Code” means the classification system and definitions of mineral resources and mineral reservesapproved by The Institution of Materials, Minerals, and Mining in the United Kingdom, as amended; “JORC Code”means the Australasian Code for Reporting of Mineral Resources and Ore Reserves prepared by the Joint Ore Reserves Committee of the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, Australian Institute ofGeoscientists and Mineral Council of Australia, as amended; “mineral project” means any exploration, development or production activity, including a royalty interest or similarinterest in these activities, in respect of diamonds, natural solid inorganic material, or natural solid fossilized organic material including base and precious metals, coal, and industrial minerals;"

"Advances in our knowledge of the petrochemical attributes of deposit environments and of the character and extent of hydrothermal systems associated with certain deposit types has resulted in increased application of lithogeochemistry to exploration programs. Lithogeochemistry can be used to vector an exploration program toward an area of high potential through the use of a series of collapsing scales of analysis from a tectonic subprovince down to a particular stratigraphic segment. In the case of volcanogenic massive sulphide (VMS) deposits this involves the recognition ofsuitable volcanic domains, and the identification of subvolcanic intrusions and cogenetic felsic extrusive complexes. The recognition of chemical vectors within regional-scale alteration zones and associated chemical sedimentary rocks allows the geologist to identify the stratigraphic units with the most potential for hosting a base metal deposit.An integrated lithogeochemical program requires the judicious use of major, trace and rare-earth element and isotopic analysis. Standard discriminant plots may be employed to identify suitable tectonic and lithologic environments. Analysis of the chemical and mineralogical variations in broad-scale, semi-comfortable alteration zones provides a useful set of vectors to VMS mineralization. These may include contouring raw data, element ratios on XY plots, normalizing data against known rock values, or calculating mass changes in alteration zones."

Gold-bearing quartz veins and replacement chalcopyrite deposits are the two important types of metallic mineral deposits of the east central Manitoba mining district. The gold-bearing veins occur along Manigotagan valley, northwest for 25 miles from Beresford lake, and the copper deposits along Oiseau valley, between Oiseau lake and the east end of Lac du Bonnet. Lithium-bearing minerals of possible commercial value have recently been discovered in pegmatite along Winnipeg river about 10 miles east of Point du Bois. There are also prospect pits with showings of galena, sphalerite, cobaltite, pentlandite, nickeliferous pyrrhotite, arsenopyrite, pyrite, molybdenite, cassiterite, and other minerals, but the various occurrences of these minerals, as exposed, are small. The bedrock and mineral deposits of this mining district are Precambrian and resemble in many respects the formations and mip.eral occurrences of western and northern Ontario. Although prospectors visited eastern Manitoba at intervals during the last fifty years, effective prospecting did not begin until 1913 or 1914, and not until 1923 were skilfully directed, systematic explorations undertaken. It is true, that between 1913 and 1923 considerable sums were expended in a number of attempts at mining and milling the gold-quartz ore, but these enterprises failed partly through poor management or attempts to develop veins that were too small or too low-grade to be worked at a profit under the existing conditions of transportation and power supply.
