"CANMET’s research into underground coal mining is primarily conducted at the Cape Breton Coal Research Laboratory (CBCRL), established in 1981 to conduct safety research in underground coal mines. Located close to Canada’s largest underground coal producer, in the Sydney Coalfield of Nova Scotia, CBCRL’s program also includes the two western underground coal operations. CBCRL is a relatively small laboratory with a staff of thirteen — eight professionals and five support staff — with an annual budget of over $1 million. In order to maintain effective research response, flexibility is key and staff are increasingly working in project teams, crossing traditional section ties and also drawing from specialist expertise elsewhere within CANMET.CBCRL’s research activities have had a substantial impact on the Canadian underground coal mining industry, particularly in Cape Breton. CBCRL contributed to Cape Breton Development Corporation’s (CBDC’s) threefold reduction in lost-time accidents in the 1980s. Also, in the last four years alone, CBCRL’s work has enabled CBDC to save over $17 million in improved utilisation of reserves and cost savings. The work embraces the three traditional areas of mine environment, strata mechanics and mining technologies, however the current direction has been strongly influenced by recent external and internal factors. It is timely to review progress and recent directions."

A six-stage sequential leaching procedure was used to assess the leachability of heavy metals from waste rock in Antamina Mine. Sequential extractions procedure is well established for fine and small (? 1g) samples. However procedures for coarse and large test samples are lacking. This study presents results of the sequential leaches tests conducted on relatively coarse and large representative samples in terms of the availability and mobility of metals. Selective chemical reagents were used to extract metals from six different fractions where metals released with each subsequent extraction are believed to be bound tighter than those released in prior steps and therefore less likely to be leached.

Reference should be made to the Index.A Brief History of Royalties1In the early days of mining in Canada, the tendency was to sell a claim for cash and to move on, using the stake to look for and stake more prospects. As prospectors became more sophisticated and Canada’s North opened up, the market for properties and the number of mining properties available increased dramatically. Speculation and the practice of consolidating several small properties into one large holding entity became common. In “hot” areas, the speculators2 could far outnumber the prospectors, many of the former having little or no prospecting expertise but lots of market and promotional savvy. However, to consolidate a number of small parcels into one large project can be expensive, and many of the parcel owners became interested in keeping a share in the project, rather than giving up everything. Speculators who were trying to consolidate small parcels wanted to minimize cash payments to parcel holders (usually they did not have much cash and preferred it flowing in their direction rather than away from them). Accordingly, non-cash transactions were developed to meet the aspirations of both owners and speculators."

"Rare earth intermetallic compounds are utilized commercially as magnetic and battery materials, electron gun electrodes, etc. Several of these intermetallics will be briefly discussed. There are many other rare earth intermetallic compounds which are not utilized industrially but have unusual properties which are of fundamental interest and may have future technological applications. Several of these materials are discussed as well.INTRODUCTIONTens of thousands of rare earth intermetallic compounds exist, but physical properties (primarily their magnetic behaviors), other than their crystal structures have been measured for only a small percentage of these materials. Among these are the commercially important compounds: Nd2Fe14B, and the SmCo5 – Sm2Co17 family – well known high strength permanent magnets; (Tb0.3Dy0.7)Fe2, Terfenol-D, a giant magnetostrictive material; LaNi5Hx a critical component of the rechargeable Ni metal hydride batteries; and LaB6 an electron emitter. There are, however, many other intermetallic compounds which are not utilized industrially, but none-the-less, exhibit interesting, and sometimes, exotic physical properties which are of fundamental interest and may have some future technological significance. These include: the giant magnetocaloric effect compounds Gd5Si2Ge2 and La(Fe13-xSix)Hy; the RCu and RAg families of ductile intermetallics; the mixed intra-lanthanide (R,R')Al2 compounds in which magnetic transitions disappear and reappear as one R is substituted for by R'; and GdNi which exhibits large dilations along two crystallographic directions and a larger contraction in the third direction at the Curie temperature resulting in zero volume change as GdNi orders magnetically via a second order phase transition.COMMERCIALLY IMPORTANT INTERMETALLICSNdFeB Permanent MagnetsThe Nd2Fe14B permanent magnets were discovered in 1984 independently in the USA and Japan. It is a ferromagnet and with proper heat treatment and processing Nd2Fe14B is the strongest near room temperature permanent magnetic material known today. This intermetallic compound is utilized as a permanent magnet in many applications, such as electric motors (e.g. the modern automobile contains up to 35 electric motors), spindles for computer hard disc drives, microphones and speaker magnets for cell phones and other audio equipment, direct drive wind turbines, actuators, and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) units. There are two kinds of NdFeB permanent magnets – bonded and sintered. The bonded magnets have a lower magnetic strength than the sintered magnet. The highest strength magnets are obtained by small substitutions of Dy (up to a maximum of 10%) for Nd, because Dy can significantly increase the coercivity and thus the energy product (a measure of the magnetic strength or hardness). The bonded magnets account for about 12% of the NdFeB market (~82 metric kt per year, containing ~20 kt/a of Nd). The NdFeB permanent magnet market is growing at a rate of about 15% per year. "The deportment of gold in samples of the biooxidation feed and product from the Harbour Lights mine in Western Australia was determined using optical microscopy and microbeam techniques such as Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry (SIMS), Time-of-Flight Laser Ionization Mass Spectrometry (TOF-LIMS), and Electron Probe Microanalysis (EPMA). The main objective was to determine the mechanisms by which acidophilic bacteria (Thiobacillus ferrooxidans) liberate refractory gold which is locked in a sulphide minerals host as visible gold inclusions (> 0.1 µm) and as submicroscopic or 'invisible' gold.Using the integrated mineralogical approach approximately 99% and 100% of the assayed gold in the biooxidation feed and biooxidation product was accounted for. The results were compared to and verified by chemical assays.The gold deportment study indicates that during biooxidation, locked visible and 'invisible' gold is rendered cyanidable by the direct action of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans as well as indirect chemical leaching. Visible gold which is enclosed in sulphide minerals is liberated or partially exposed and is therefore rendered cyanidable as the host mineral is oxidized and dissolved. 'Invisible' gold either coalesces on the surface of the host sulphide mineral as the particle is dissolved or is released into the liquid phase and immediately adsorbs onto the surface of other ore particles with a net negative charge.The shakeflask suspension indicates that direct bacterial oxidation pits and channels correspond to zones of 'invisible' gold and arsenic (in pyrite) enrichment in the host sulphide mineral."

Nickel laterite deposits are typically formed from tropically weathered mafic-to-ultramafic complexes. The resulting nickel concentration is found within soil horizons and is mineable with regular dozer units. At the time of mining, digging elevations are needed at selective mining units (SMUs) or representative dozer regions (RDRs). Moreover, for mine planning, the costs due to dilution and lost ore require mining elevations to be specified. A conditional simulation approach is used to calculate “optimum” RDR mining elevations. Multiple realizations of the ore base surface are simulated. For a single bottom surface realization, dilution and lost ore costs are calculated over the entire vertical extent of each RDR. The optimum mining elevation is the elevation where the lowest summed cost of “accepting dilution” and “wasting ore” occurs. The reported RDR dilution is the cost of mining the volume of waste located below the bottom surface and above the optimum mining elevation. The reported RDR lost ore is the cost of not mining the volume of ore above the bottom surface and below the optimum mining elevation. For all ore bottom surface realizations, optimum RDR mining elevations and their associated dilution and lost ore costs are calculated and compiled to represent production uncertainty.

The backfill system at Cleveland Potash?s Boulby Mine places waste filter cake underground in the form of a high concentration slurry in worked out areas of the mine reducing the mine?s environmental impact. The backfill system delivers slurry approximately 1100 m down the mine and up to 11 000 m horizontally underground. The Boulby backfill system is unique in that the placed backfill waste is not used for the usual purposes such as support, pillar extraction or reducing ventilation requirements. It was specifically implemented for environmental reasons. This influenced the design and resulted in some unique features of the system. A previous paper (Wilkins et al., 2004) described the design and commissioning of the backfill system. This paper describes the operational experience with the backfill system and backfill placement since commissioning in May 2003 and looks at lessons that can be applied in other backfill designs.

The Quinsam Coal Mine is in the process of extracting a panel beneath the mine access road. To prevent damage to the road, and adjacent powerline, it was necessary to establish a ?protection zone? within which the extent of mining would be limited. The protection zone is analogous to the setback limit. For economic reasons it was desirable to make the protective zone as small as possible, and with the greatest extraction ratio possible. The size of the protective zone was established by determining the angle of critical deformation using the numerical model FLAC, coupled with field data on subsidence from the Mine. The angle of critical deformation (defined as the angle, measured from the vertical, at which intolerable damage is sustained by a structure) was determined to be between 0 and 5 degrees. The allowable extraction ratio in the protection zone was established using the ARMPS method of pillar design coupled with field data on pillar stability from the Mine. Excavations spans to prevent caving were determined by historical experience and field data on span stability from the Mine, coupled with numerical modeling. The minimum pillar size was determined to be 7.5m. The maximum pillar height was established at 2.5m. The maximum allowable excavation span was determined to be 8.5m. With these criteria, extraction ratios between 54 and 73% (measured in plan view) were determined to be appropriate for the protection zone.

"The Time of Flight Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometer (ToF-SIMS) is unique in that it measures the outermost atomic layers of any material. The technique is particularly suited for determining surface chemical composition of mineral particles. It is most commonly used as a diagnostic tool to measure mineral surface chemical variability in plant and bench top flotation separation processes. Recently, research towards understanding the full capability of the instrument has resulted in the development of new diagnostic applications related to various Au extraction technologies and the development of the ToF-SIMS as a predictive tool for assessing the chemical reactivity of the ore.In this paper we will present a brief review of the ToF-SIMS technique with recent advances in instrumentation and methodologies including:•,?recent developments and advances towards a semi-quantitative approach to the evaluation of mineral surface modifiers (ex. Cu),•,?flotation case studies investigating activator, depressant and collector loading variability within a flotation process,•,?the recently developed chemical reactivity test which we believe has the potential to predict the behaviour of minerals in a flotation test in response to chemical transfer during grinding,•,recent applications for determination of surface Au preg-robbed in carbonaceous materials.A portion of this material has been recently presented at the COM 2009 meeting and at SIMS XVII (see Dimov et al 2009 and Hart et al, 2009).INTRODUCTIONIn flotation seperation surface chemistry is the principal determinant for selective separation of the various mineral phases (Ralston, 1994, Smart et al, 2003). Determination of this hydrophobic/hydrophilic balance by particle therefore requires correct identification and selection of the particular mineral phase(s) followed by a statistical analysis of the surface chemical characteristics of the particles with an estimation of the spread of values (Smart et al, 2003)."

Introduction The world has been suffering from an excessive production of all kinds of raw materials, and the metals and petroleum are no exception. As a consequence, at the moment, the urge to find new mineral deposits is almost non-existent and prospecting languishes. But from previous experience we know that sooner or later new supplies will be needed. Mineral deposits become exhausted, and to keep up the supplies of our metals and petroleum, new deposits must be found. Even now, a supply of petroleum of domestic production would not be unwelcome in Canada. It is not, therefore, so entirely malapropos to discuss means of finding ores and oil as it would seem. Almost any physical property connected in definite manner with minerals and rocks may be made the basis of geophysical exploration. This is particularly true of electrical resistivity, and its utilization in electrical prospecting has been the deciding factor in the discovery of such big ore-bodies as Buchans mine, Newfoundland, and the large copper ore-bodies in northern Sweden, etc., as well as in the solution of many foundation and structural problems. The importance of electrical prospecting has been growing steadily, and already there exists hardly any exploration project involving geological problems which may not profit by its application. Electrical prospecting is marching on, and neither temporary failures, nor incompetence, nor over-optimism, nor ill-will and pessimism, nor bad times and business depression, will be able to halt its progress.

"Chuquicamata Underground Mine is one of the main projects for the Chilean government copper company (CODELCO). Underground mine project has been under construction since 2013 and presents a solution for the lower production levels of the open pit and prolongs the life of the mine for the next 40 years. Currently, around 2000 workers operate in the mine daily. Dozens of trucks and heavy machines drives through all main routes and access in the mine. As a mine under construction not all the infrastructure necessary to operate safely in the mine has been completed. Risk of a truck or fixed facility fire is always a challenge to keep under control. One important part of fire simulation relays on what we can do prevent a fire and what can be done with the existing infrastructure to control a declared fire and start evacuation plans. This study has been made as a feasible emergency plan to implement, in this case, of a mine under construction, were limited resources are available. Several fire scenarios have been made to support all the emergency plan strategy and a detailed step by step procedure indicates what the elements of a fire emergency plan and risk analysis are.INTRODUCTIONThe main objective of this study is to describe the importance of fire risk analyses (FRAs) and different methods to be used before commencing fire simulation and methodology steps utilized for a fire emergency plan strategy (EPS) at the Chuquicamata underground mine. It also describes how to classify zones which are going to be affected by fumes and gases propagation derived from the exact location of a fire event. Fire simulation study is helpful to determine the impact on a ventilation system with the main purpose of providing relevant information to complement emergency plans and stablished control techniques in ventilation design and its operation. Most fire simulation studies only concentrates in simulation techniques on itself. But what is the next following step in developing an emergency plan? How can we evaluate, classify and treat risky areas? This study is focused mainly in the phases before and after a fire simulation process. Phases corresponds to a good FRA and how output data can be used for an EPS."

ABSTRACT: Drawing on past research experience with sprayable polymer mine support agents (TSLs), Spray On Plastics Ltd. has developed a TSL ground support system called RockWeb. Using a relatively new polyurea polymer technology, RockWeb has been engineered to solve problems encountered underground with polyurethane liners by incorporating rapid curing, moisture insensitivity and superior physical performance. RockWeb possesses a unique, patented ability to be sprayed in a ?cobweb? like consistency allowing the applicator to span fissures in the rock, ensuring no initial defects in the liner, and maintaining design thickness over highly irregular surfaces. This ability, coupled with the high strength and elasticity of polyurea, allows RockWeb to mitigate rock movement through yielding, while maintaining intimate surface confinement. RockWeb provides reduction in logistics through the transport of 1/25 of the material quantities required for shotcrete, rapid deployment rates of as little as 30 minutes per round, and immediate return to the work area. This paper will discuss the technology and advantages of RockWeb as well as opportunities for overall mining cycle cost reduction. The safety benefits, as well as health and environmental considerations regarding application of isocyanate-based liners will also be discussed.

Magnesium rods of 99.95% purity and approximately 6 mm in diameter were continuously cast at rates of between 15 and 25 mm/min by a heated mould process and their mechanical properties evaluated. It was found that rods cast at 15 and 20 mm/min consisted of a single crystal, while rods cast at a speed of 25 mm/min were multi-crystalline and showed a unidirectional structure. Although room temperature tensile ductility to fracture varied widely, it was found that with an appropriate crystal orientation, cast rods can exhibit elongation by as much as 215%.

"International competition is presenting the Canadian steel industry with a major challenge. While Canadian companies have invested in new technology, research and development, activity by Canadian industry, in general, lags significantly behind that of its major competitors. While OECD countries increased their research and development spending during the 1980s, Canada's R&D funding levels have changed little since the early 1970s and have actually dropped since 1986, despite greater public discussion on the issue. This fact is reflected in the relatively slower pace of innovation in the Canadian steel industry, despite the efforts of both government and industry.In addition, there are a number of factors that undermine the competitiveness of the Canadian steel industry, in particular in relation to the United States. Among these are higher interest rates, labour costs and tax rates, as well as an overvalued Canadian dollar. Canadian steel companies are thus feeling the full impact of the current economic recession. This recession, combined with recent strikes, have, for example, caused serious losses for Algoma and Stelco.In spite of these objective difficulties, the Canadian steel industry has been able to survive and continues to strive for a leadership position in the world market. Since World War II, heavy investment in new technology has allowed the industry to upgrade its facilities and increase productivity, while at the same time improving quality and reducing pollution. This last point is particularly important in view of public insistence on improvements to the quality of the environment. Over the next decade, this technological innovation must be maintained and intensified if industry is to meet the challenge of international competition and attain a leadership position."

A phenomenological model is presented for leaching silver from silver sulfide contained in mineral particles with ammoniacal thiosulfate solutions of copper in stirred reactors. Experimental results were used to adjust the kinetic parameters of the model, such as the reaction order and velocity. The incorporation of the cuprous sulfide-silver sulfide equilibrium at the reaction interface allowed the prediction of the conversion limits for different reagent concentrations. The information obtained from the reactor model was later integrated into a heap leaching simulation, whose results adequately describe tendencies observed in column tests, with respect to variations in copper and thiosulfate concentrations. "Several Fe, Fe-Cu, and Cu-Ag prospects hosted by Mesozoic carbonate-rich sedimentary rocks that were intruded by diorite stocks define an approximately 20 × 200 km belt along the Andes Cordillera of southwest Mendoza province, Argentina (34°-36°S). This belt includes the Hierro Indio and Vegas Peladas Fe skarns, Las Choicas, and several other Cu-(Ag) prospects.The main features of the Fe skarns include: association with mantle-derived middle Miocene (~15-11 Ma) diorite stocks and sills; widespread alteration including epidote ± amphibole ± magnetite endoskarns, and zoned garnet (Grs0-66 Adr32.5-100) ± magnetite ± pyroxene (Di24-50 Jo2-9 Hd74-41) exoskarns formed from oxidized, saline, high-temperature brines (530º-660ºC; 60-70 wt.% NaCl equiv.); and magnetite-hematite orebodies associated with quartz ± epidote ± calcite ± actinolite formed at lower temperatures (290º-436ºC) from saline fluids (32-50 wt.% NaCl equiv.) of magmatic origin.West of the Fe skarn belt, the Valle Hermoso district covers more than 300 km2 and hosts several poorly known Cu-(Ag) prospects (estimated 30 Mt with 1.5% Cu and 20 g/t Ag). These prospects share many characteristics with the iron oxide copper-gold-type systems and manto-type Cu deposits of northern and central Chile. One of the prospects (Las Choicas) is located at the apex of a regional 015°-trending anticline, along the contact of stratified calcareous sandstone and limestone (Neocallovian-Oxfordian) with a diorite pluton. This pluton has positive Ta and Nb anomalies (on normalized diagrams) and a high Ti content, features uncommon in Miocene diorites associated with Fe skarns and of magmas derived from sub-arc mantle sources. Alteration at Las Choicas includes early widespread chlorite + calcite ± albite ± scapolite ± ilmenite or titanite ± apatite, and local actinolite ± hematite ± biotite alteration of diorite and sedimentary rocks along contacts. Later Cu mineralization (1%-10% Cu) is associated with calcite ± albite ± quartz alteration in fractures, vein networks, and crackle breccias. Mineralization is zoned from bornite ± chalcopyrite ± millerite with Zn, As, Mo, Ag, and U anomalies in the main orebody, through chalcopyrite-rich breccias with Zn anomalies, and chalcopyrite ± tetrahedrite vein networks with Sb, As, Ag, and Zn anomalies in the uppermost zone, to a Cu-depleted pyrite-rich envelope with Co anomalies, and finally to late, barren calcite veins in distal zones."

Laboratory scale studies of the development and application of high capacity heavy metal ion adsorbents with uniform nanoscale porosity (denoted MP-HMS, mercaptopropyl - hexagonal mesoporous structure) to extract gold from solutions is described. The adsorbents are selective towards gold ions. The adsorption capacities of these materials are also among the highest reported. MP-HMS has shown the capability to adsorb 330-mg gold per gram adsorbent (up to 30% of their weight). Gold uptake by the adsorbent was found to increase dramatically with solution agitation. The adsorbent was found to be extremely effective in adsorbing gold ions from ultra- low concentrations, like those found in mine effluents. Experimental studies indicated that MP-HMS maximum adsorption of gold (99.9%) occurred under all solution concentrations. Another promising attribute of these materials is their favorable adsorption kinetics. The contact time required for 80% adsorption of gold was found to be less than 60 seconds. The efficiency of these nanoporous materials for the recovery of gold from mining effluent is evaluated and their prospect for application in the mining industry discussed. The process thus has the prospect of becoming an efficient and environmental friendly method to recover gold from aqueous solutions, such as gold mill effluents.

The Phelps Dodge El Paso Rod Mill produces approximately 2.4 million pounds per day of copper rod from a casting and rolling operation. The newly formed rod is treated to remove mill scale and oxides using a sulfuric acid and hydrogen peroxide solution which is bled periodically when the copper concentration reaches 30-35 g/L. The bleed solution is heated to 75° C to destroy the residual peroxide. Copper is then recovered in a 270 cell EMEW electrowinning plant. Clean acid is also regenerated in the EMEW plant and is returned to the rod cleaning circuit. The EMEW plant commissioned in January 2006, has two operators and replaces a copper sulfate plant with fourteen operators. The EMEW plant has a capacity of 1700 kg/day of cathode copper at 2.1 kWh/kg copper deposited. The electrowinning plant operates in closed circuit with the rod mill returning up to 2600 kg/day of sulfuric acid resulting in zero discharge. Use of dimensionally stable anodes (DSA®) ensures that the acid quality is maintained in the closed loop operation. The operating conditions, performance and plant experience of the EMEW copper and acid recovery plant are discussed.

This paper describes the results of testwork for the treatment of Ambatovy laterite by an acid pressure leach process, with recovery of the soluble nickel and cobalt values as mixed sulphide intermediate by precipitation with hydrogen sulphide, and subsequent refining of the mixed sulphide to nickel and cobalt metals. These process development studies were carried out primarily in 2004, as part of a bankable feasibility study for the Ambatovy Nickel Project.

Highland Valley Copper is a conventional truck-shovel mining and flotation concentrator operation located some 75 kilometres southwest of Kamloops, B.C. (Figure 1). The ore is within a porphyry deposit and is mined at a rate of 135,000 metric tonnes per day from two separate open pits. The nearby mill produces concentrates containing 375 million pounds of copper and 5 million pounds of molybdenum metal yearly. Head grades are roughly 0.40% Cu at a 0.23% Cu equivalent cut-off. The strip ratio currently sits at 0.55:1 with waste quantities made up of separate rock and unconsolidated overburden units. From the mill, concentrates are trucked to nearby Ashcroft and then hauled by rail to ocean port facilities in Vancouver. The mine employs 950 persons and is planned to operate until 2009. The operation is a partnership between three owners: TeckCominco (61.4%), BHP Billiton (33.6%), and Highmont Mining (5%). Management is shared by the two principal owners and directed by an appointed committee.
