"MAGNETITE HAS BEEN found in many .parts of the coastal area of British Columbia, but the more important deposits are on Vancouver Island and Texada Island. The locations of these deposits are shown on Figure 1.Interest in the magnetite deposits dates back to the 1870s, when land was acquired on the southwest coast of Texada Island by the Puget Sound Iron Company. This ground included the Prescott, Paxton, and Lake deposits. During the years 1885 to 1903, and 1908, 28,898 tons of magnetite ore was shipped to the company's blast-furnace plant at Irondale, Washington, U.S.A. This production was almost entirely from the Prescott open-pits.In the years following the Texada Island discoveries, other magnetite deposits were found in the coastal area, and various plans were proposed to utilize the local ores in the establishment of a steel industry in the Pacific Northwest. None was carried to fruition but, in 1951, open-pit mining was begun at Iron Hill, Vancouver Island, to furnish iron concentrates for steel mills in Japan. In 1952 mining of the Texada deposits was resumed to supply the same market. Production figures for these recent operations are as follows:"

"THE REEVES MACDONALD mine is in the Sa Imo-Pend d'Oreille mining area of southeastern British Columbia. It is on the Nelway-Waneta road 4 miles west of the border-crossing point of Nelway. The Reeves orebody from which all production has come is one of several mineralized zones in easterly-striking limestones occurring between the Pend d'Oreille and the lower part of Salmo River.The property was originally located as two groups of claims by R. M, Reeves and J. H. McDonald. The two groups were consolidated in 1925. and extensive development work was done from then until 1930 and again in 1937, but no ore was shipped. The mine was reopened in 1947 and, between 1949 and 1953, 1,057,804 tons of ore was mined. Concentrates recovered contained 85,626 ounces of silver, 19,394,092 pounds of lead, 72,076,495 pounds of zinc, and 455,051 pounds of cadmium. Low metal prices forced the mine to close in 1953, but operations were resumed in November, 1955.The orebodies at the Reeves MacDonald mine are steeply plunging lead and zinc sulphide replacement deposits in a banded limestone named the Reeves limestone. The orebodies contain pyrite, honey-coloured sphalerite, and galena, and are surrounded by a dolomitized zone. In the Reeves orebody, where the relationships are known, the dolomite has the same general shape as the orebody. Four zones of sulphides are known on the property (see Figure 1). Three of these, the Reeves, B. L., and O'Donnell, are believed to be faulted segments of one mineralized zone. The fourth, the Point ore zone, exposed on the north bank of the Pend d'Oreille River, is not developed and its structural position is not known, but it appears to be a separate deposit."

"The Mississagi quartzite is the basal formation of the Quirke Lake trough. As it is traced around the rim, a gradual change in dip is observed, as follows:Northwest corner 50 degrees south.Algom Quirke mine 34 degrees south.Quirke Lake 25 degrees south.Whiskey Lake 22 degrees west.Pecors Lake 25 degrees north.Algom Nordic mine 18 degrees north.Elliot Lake 11 degrees north.Pistol Lake 5-7 degrees west.Thus the apparent synclinal axis is a curving east-west line lying closer to the north limb than to the south. The axis appears to plunge west at about 5 degrees.The Huronian sediments lie on a basement of granites, gabbros, and volcanics. Diamond drill evidence indicates that this basement has a surface of peneplanation, and that the areas of soft basic rock have a smoother topography than the granite. For the most part the orebodies at the Quirke and Nordic mines overlie a basement of soft basic rock.The Mississagi formation is the host rock of the deposits, and its primary structures are suggestive of the conditions under which the conglomerate beds were deposited. Cross-bedding is common, although normal bedding varies from thick to thin to essentially lacking. Grain gradation is not common. Where coarse and fine grains occur together, the coarse tend to be more rounded than the fine. These features are characteristic of shallow-water deposits, laid down above the lower limit of wave action. Therefore, the quartz-pebble conglomerates probably represent ancient water courses, bays, beaches, and bars.The causes governing the creation of the trough can only be conjectured, but there is evidence that both subsidence and compressive stresses played active roles. Drag-folds in argillite beds near Whiskey Lake indicate compressive stress. On the other hand, gentle crumpling in thin-bedded limestones on Quirke Lake is probably due to pre-induration slumping and folding. If strong compression had been widespread within the trough, one would expect drag-folding and shearing of the incompetent beds to be more general. Two large-scale, fold-like structures were mapped by Collins, but their axes do not parallel the trough axis, and they are therefore not related to the major structure."

Introduction The usual laboratory methods of uranium analysis are either tedious, time-consuming chemical procedures or elaborate physical methods requiring sensitive equipment. There is thus an urgent need for a method of estimating the uranium content of ore samples by approximate analysis in the field. When a new property is being developed, it is desirable to know, with the least possible delay, the uranium content of channel samples in order to guide the diamond drilling and digging operations. Prospectors, too, require approximate analyses of their hand specimens to evaluate their discoveries. To satisfy the demand for these types of analyses, several field procedures have been tried. Two general plans can be followed. One is fast but will yield only a rough estimate. The other is slightly longer but, if done carefully, will give an assay probably within 10 per cent of the true value. For field operation it is necessary to strip the more accurate laboratory methods of analysis of all refinements because of the limited equipment and skilled techniques at hand. Most of the corrections normally applied, with the exception of that for equilibrium, will not alter the gross analysis to any appreciable extent. When uranium atoms in pitchblende disintegrate, they break down into other radioactive elements, and eventually the number of elements being formed is equal to the number breaking down. The ore is then said to be in equilibrium. Certain geological processes, however, such as leaching, may selectively remove some of these elements and hence reduce the radioactivity of the ore sample. The ore is then said to be out of equilibrium. The field analysis may then be in error by as much as 50 per cent since the apparatus is calibrated with standards that are in equilibrium. However, such a large error due to loss of equilibrium is the exception, and in most cases uncorrected field types of analyr.is are justified.

"The Frood-Stobie Mine is by far the largest metal producer in the Sudbury area. Its efficient development was made possible by the consolidation of three mining properties that covered parts of the same ore body. They were known as the Frood Mine, the Frood Extension, and the Stobie Mine.The southwest or Frood portion of the orebody was discovered by Thomas Frood and A. J. Cockburn in 1884. Cockburn's interest was acquired by J. H. Metcalf and W. B. McAllister and patents were issued to Frood, Metcalf, and McAllister in 1884. The property was purchased by the Canadian Copper Company (lnco) in 1886.James Stobie discovered the northeast or Stobie part of the orebody in 1885. In 1886 Stobie and Rinaldo McConnell applied for the location and patent was issued in 1886. They sold the property to the Canadian Copper Company (lnco) the same year.The Frood Extension property included very little of the ore zone at surface but it covered ore down the dip from Frood. Frank Cochrane was granted title to the property in 1908 and sold it to the Mond Nickel Company in 1910. The title was transferred to the International Nickel Company in 1929 at the time of the Inco-Mond merger.Prior to 1930 the three properties produced a total of about 1 ,000,000 tons of ore from mining done during the periods 1887-1903, 1913-1915 and 1925-1929. Since 1929 the Frood-Stobie operation has produced more than 120,000,000 tons of ore, about half from open pits and half from square set and blast hole stoping. The current production rate is in excess of 6,000,000 tons per year.The principal products from the ore are nickel and copper. The by-products are iron ore, cobalt, platinum, palladium, rhodium, ruthenium, iridium, gold, silver, selenium, tellurium, and sulphuric acid."

To the Membership of the Institute Gentlemen: The Mineral Industry of Canada in 1948 The preliminary estimate issued by the Dominion Bureau of Statistics and tabulated in the Bulletin of January, 1949, indicated that the value of Canada's mineral production in 1948 reached an all-time high of $808,180,216, showing an increase of 25 per cent over the previous record of $644,696,007 established in the preceding year. The output value of metallics was increased by 22.4 per cent; of fuels, by 43.7 percent of other non-metallics, by 19 per 'cent; and of structural materials, by 16.8 per cent. The value of metals produced in 1948 at $483,770,759, was about $87,000,000 more than in the previous year. There were substantial increases in the tonnages of copper, lead zinc nickel, and other base metals produced, but the rises in market prices for such metals accounted for most of the gains in output values. Production of gold at 3,495,403 ounces valued at $122,339,105 indicated an increase in volume of approximately 500,000 ounces and an increase in value of 14 per cent. Despite the benefits provided under the Emergency Gold Mining Assistance Act 1948 the volume of gold produced in the year was still nearly 2,000,000 ounces less than the record of 5,300,000 ounces established in 1941. The value of mineral fuels produced in 1948, at $158,787,255, was 44 per cent above the 1947 total. Coal production at 18,431,250 tons valued at $107,298,757, while substantially higher than in the preceding year was still half a million tons below the record reached in 1942. Striking developments in the Leduc field in Alberta were responsible for bringing the output of crude petroleum in the year to a new high of 12,098,166 barrels, valued at $36,858,959.

"THE WRITER'S acquaintance with Kootenay King mine is limited to a brief geological excursion in the vicinity. This paper has been compiled largely from maps of J. Sullivan, mine geologist in 1952, kindly made available to the writer by Transcontinental Resources; a 1942 private report by W. L. Brown; and personal communications with J. Sullivan. Remarks on regional geology, and the comparison with Sullivan mine, are specifically the writer's.The Kootenay King mine is situated in the westernmost range of the southern Canadian Rockies at an elevation of 7,300 feet. From the Sullivan Mine at Kimberley, B. C., it lies 19 miles due east. Six miles of this distance are represented by the pronounced topographical and structural gap of the Rocky Mountain Trench. Mineral claims were locat-ed in the area prior to 1898. The deposit was first seriously explored in the late 1920s, and a small orebody was then outlined and developed. Mining and milling were undertaken in 1951.52. The orebody, amounting to about 14,000 tons, was mined out, and no significant new ore was revealed.The orebody is a replacement of dolomitic argillite by fine-grained galena, sphalerite, and pyrite. The sulphides are finely laminated in the direction of bedding, following out minor folds faithfully. The grade of ore estimated from diamond drill holes (W. L. Brown, 1942) was 11 ·I per cent zinc, 11 ·I per cent lead, and 3·8 ounces per ton of silver. The mineralized zone extends about 250 feet horizontally, 160 feet vertically, with a width of six to twenty feet.General GeologyThe country rocks are sediments of the Aldridge formation of late Precambrian age. For several thousand feet stratigraphically above and below the mine, the formation consists mainly of thinly laminated argillite and siltstone. Several horizons contain appreciable carbonate. About 2,800 feet stratigraphically below the mine, predominantly dolomitic beds mark the top of the underlying Fort Steele formation. The medium-bedded fine quartzites, which characterize about 10,000 feet of the Middle Aldridge in the Purcell range, have a restricted development amounting to only 2,000 feet in the Rocky Mountains. This member is about 2,200 feet above the mine horizon."

"The Geology of the Cochenour Willans mine, Red Lake district, was described by J. P. Nowlan in the Jubilee Volume. The complexity and intense alteration of the rocks obscured any clear relationship between ore and structure, and Nowlan recognized that future work might greatly modify the ideas then existing. This has proved to be the case. Subsequent detailed work has established the stratigraphic sequence in the Keewatin formations which are the host rocks of the orebodies, and has shown that the principal orebodies are confined to two adjoining bands of tuff.On this basis, it is now possible to map the complex structures with greatly increased accuracy. The amount of drilling and underground exploration required to find new ore has been much reduced, and indicated ore reserves are now substantially greater than at any time in the past. Daily production in 1955 averaged 187 tons per day at 0.578 ounces of gold per ton.The sequence of Precambrian events in the mine area is summarized in the following table:Intrusion of post-ore dykes.Ore formation.Intrusion of post-faulting, pre-ore dykes.Deformation: folding and shearing; alteration; faulting.Timiskaming sedimentation.Unconformity.Keewatin: volcanics and sediments, host rocks of the orebodies, described in detail in the next section.KeewatinFrom oldest to youngest, the Keewatin rocks in the mine area can be divided into six formations, which have been given local names:“Grey"" LavaA fine-grained dacitic to andesitic lava, amygdaloidal and locally containing well formed pillows. Certain areas are sheared and chloritized to a degree that makes identification difficult. The rocks are carbonatized throughout; the most persistent carbonate veins parallel the upper contact. "The Candego property is in Boisbuisson and Christie Townships, Quebec, about 13 miles south of Marsoui, a village on the north coast of the Gaspe peninsula, 80 miles east of the railhead at Matane. It was the first producing mine in the peninsula. Production to October 1954, when operations were suspended, totalled 68,497 tons of ore, which yielded concentrates containing 8,706,535 lb. lead, 5,870,272 lb. zinc, 355,526 oz. silver, and about 1,000 oz. gold. The property was acquired by the present company in the summer of 1955.The mine has been developed by seven adits, driven into the west slope of the valley of the Marsoui River. The river here is at an elevation of about 1,600 feet, and is roughly 1,500 feet below the level of the adjacent upland. Adit elevations range from 1,760 to 2,330 feet. Five of them are in one vertical zone, on what was originally believed to be a single vein. Past production has come from Nos. l to 5; the chief present high-grade ore reserves are in No. 7.The author's observations were made in adits Nos. 3 to 6, in several of the old pits, in the surface trenches, and on drill core, at various times between December 1952 and September 1953. Much of the surrounding area has been mapped by Jones (I) and McGerrigle (2) for the Quebec Department of Mines. H. M. Kingsbury served as consulting geologist to the mining company for several years.General GeologyThe Candego veins occur in Lower ( ?) Ordovician sedimentary rocks which form a strip about 15 miles wide along the north coast of the Gaspé peninsula. The series includes limestones, shales, and sandstones, mildly metamorphosed in places. Three miles south of the mine is the north contact of the granitic intrusive, regarded as Lower or Middle Devonian, which underlies the Tabletop Mountains area. This batholith is about 10 miles long, in a north-south direction, and about 4 miles wide. At Mount Albert, about 5 miles west of the Tabletop intrusion, is a group of basic rocks, amphibolites and serpentinized peridotites, thought to have been intruded at the close of the Ordovician."

Introduction This paper describes a recent innovation in the design and construction of mine headframes. A reinforced concrete headframe was built by using sliding forms. A concrete headframe of conventional design was originally considered, but investigation of this project showed that it was doubtful if the bearing strength of the soil was sufficient to support the great weight of a structure of this type. In addition, the slope and the fractured condition of the serpentine bed-rock did not permit satisfactory piling. A conventional steel headframe with storage bins was then designed, but, due to the steel situation, delivery promises were set back many months. The concrete headframe was again investigated, and a design was adopted incorporating a circular headframe lower in height than that first considered, with skips discharging into a smaller surge bin. The upper section of the shaft collar was strengthened to result in a stable structure which would be supported by bed-rock, as well as by the concrete and steel lining of the shaft itself.

With the present-day trend of rising labour costs and a lowering of production efficiency of workmen, it has become imperative that every effort be made to use manpower to the greatest advantage and to mechanize mining as much as possible. During the past few years this trend has gained much prominence in the Porcupine camp. In view of this, the executive of the Porcupine Branch considered that the Mechanical Movement of Muck would be a very timely subject for a Symposium. Accordingly a Committee was formed, with A. K. Douglass, Mine Superintendent for Delnite Mines, Ltd., as Chairman, and the Symposium was held in the Auditorium of the McIntyre Community Building, Schumacher, on March 25th last. Papers dealing with shovel loader and mechanical scraper operation at six of the larger mines of the camp were presented and discussed, and a tabulation was prepared giving data on the machines in operation at a total of eleven mines. The papers and tabulation, reproduced below, will doubtless be of considerable interest to operators of mines in all parts of Canada.

Introduction The property of Rouyn Merger Gold Mines, Limited, is in Rouyn and Joannès townships, Western Quebec, seven miles east of the town of Rouyn. Traversing it is the east-west trending Cadillac-Bouzan fault. Diamond drilling in 1944 and 1945 along a shear zone south of the fault indicated an ore deposit lying at the contact between sedimentary and volcanic rocks and dipping approximately 60° to the northwest. In the summer of 1945 it was decided to sink a shaft to investigate the indicated ore zone. In the immediate vicinity of the deposit, bed-rock is overlain by clay beds, in some places as much as 70 feet thick. Consequently, possible shaft sites were limited to those locations where overburden would not be excessive. The most favourable site was about 125 feet to the south of the ore zone as projected vertically from bed-rock to the surface. Accordingly, it was decided to sink the shaft at this point, with an inclination of 60° N. W., paralleling the dip of the ore zone.

Introduction It is the purpose of this paper to discuss a number of the metallurgical improvements in the technology of copper-nickel ore treatment which have been introduced during recent years in the plants of ?the International Nickel Company of Canada, Limited. In common with other ore treatment processes, the procedure for extracting nickel and copper is changing almost continuous! y. These changes are necessitated by reason of changes in ore grades and characteristics, rising material and labour charges, and the constant drive to maximize metal recovery and to minimize production costs. It is not possible to present a comprehensive list of all the changes made, and only a selected number of the improvements in the milling, smelting, and refining operations are covered. It should be clearly understood that some phases of the procedures described have been pioneered by others in kindred fields and due acknowledgment is given to their foresight and efforts. Articles have been published over the years describing the operations of the International Nickel Company plants and the reader is referred to the Engineering and Mining Journal, Vol. 130, No. 9, November 10th, 1930, and to the Canadian Mining Journal, Vol. 58, No. 11, November, 1937, and Vol. 67, No. 5, May, 1946. Introduction Today, geophysical exploration is recognized as a special science wedged between geology and mining. Universities and technical institutes have special professors teaching geophysics applied to oil and ore prospecting. The list of literature on geophysical exploration has grown from practically nothing at all some twenty-five years ago to ~ several thousands of books, some of them very imposing volumes. Most of the methods now used have been developed since the first World War, and very large systematic exploration campaigns have been carried out in many places, in many countries. It has been rather difficult to obtain enough information as to what is going on in Canada. However, since the Associate Committee on Geodesy and Geophysics of the National Research Council became more actively engaged in promoting geophysical research, it may be easier to obtain information and, in the future, the quarterly issued Canadian Geophysical Bulletin may throw considerable light on the current geophysical activities in Canada. Some twenty crews have been engaged the last few years in geophysical prospecting for ore. In the United States, between 500 and 600 crews are employed exclusively in geophysical prospecting. Most of these, however, are engaged in oil exploration. During the winter 1942-1943, the German Government employed some fifty crews on geophysical exploration, and some ten crews were working for private enterprises.

Introduction The great importance of air warfare during World War II and the introduction of large-scale air transportation and airborne operations created an immediate demand for large quantities of high quality light alloy products. Before this war, the use of magnesium, the lightest structural metal, was barely in the development stage, and considerable research work was needed to overcome difficulties in improving its properties and to attain uniform quality in mass production of magnesium alloy products. The Canadian Bureau of Mines was frequently called upon, by various agencies of the Armed Forces and of the newly established war industries, to examine magnesium alloys that had failed in fabrication or in actual service, and to advise on proper alloys and fabrication methods to be used. Failures in magnesium alloy castings were connected mainly with lack of knowledge of proper founding and surface-protecting techniques. Most of the defects were due to microporosity and faulty heat treatment. To aid the foundry industry, small-scale investigations were started on the effect of various factors in the casting technique in order to improve the quality of the products. These investigations were made in co-operation with representatives of the Armed Forces and the Canadian magnesium industry. This work was later co-ordinated into a broad research programme on magnesium alloys, comprising problems on melting, refining, various casting methods, heat treatment, and testing of properties of standard and special alloys. This research programme? is still in force, and the present paper contains some results of the first series of investigations on magnesium casting alloys carried out at the Experimental Foundry of the Bureau of Mines.

Introduction A comprehensive study of the economics of processes for smelting iron ores has been made by the Ontario Research Foundation on behalf of the Ontario Research Commission. This survey has included investigations of all processes in commercial use, and proposed processes which are still in the experimental stage. The two main objects of this work were to discover (l) whether any known processes would be particularly suited to present and future Canadian conditions, and (2) whether any new process would be of assistance in solving the present scrap shortage in Canada. The future prospects of the Canadian iron smelting industry have changed radically in the past ten years. For nearly twenty years before 1939 no iron ore was mined in Canada. The ore used was imported, mainly from the United States and Newfoundland. The economics of iron blast-furnace smelting always force the location of blast furnaces near the source of coal for making high-grade metallurgical coke, and near the market for iron and steel, rather than near the iron ore. Blast-furnace installations in Canada are confined to the north shores of the Great Lakes with ready access to United States coal and ore and the major Canadian markets, and to Nova Scotia near the coalfields of that Province. This distribution of primary smelting capacity naturally results in relatively high prices for iron and steel in the West, the North, and in Quebec.

Introduction A shaft sinking operation carried out at the Viking Yellowknife mine in the spring of 1947 presents certain features, especially as regards speed of sinking and low cost, that may be of interest to Institute members, and especially to those who are not familiar with conditions and costs in the Northwest Territories. After collaring, the inclined, two-compartment shaft was sunk 130 feet by four miners in twenty-eight days at a direct cost of only $53.19 per foot. All things considered, this is a remarkable performance, even if it does not actually establish a record. The property is at Morris lake, some forty-five miles north of Yellowknife. Formerly owned by Athona Mines (1937), Limited, it was acquired by the then newly incorporated Viking Yellowknife Gold Mines, Limited, in 1947. Surface work and diamond drilling in 1946 disclosed a number of veins and masses of quartz in a sill of diorite which lies conformably within sedimentary rocks. The sill strikes N.30°E. and dips at 70° to 85° southeast, and has a mean width of 40 feet over its explored length of 3,000 feet . Both the quartz and the diorite carry gold and are mineralized with pyrrhotite and lesser amounts of galena, sphalerite, chalcopyrite, and arsenopyrite. Of thirty-five holes drilled in the mineralized zone, the core from twenty showed visible gold. Sampling of drill cores indicated several ore shoots in the north and central parts of the sill. Assays, however, were somewhat erratic, possibly due to the fairly widespread presence of visible gold, and it was decided that the deposit could best be explored by underground sampling. Accordingly, late in 1946, plans were laid for the sinking of a shaft.

This is the first in a series of Coal Technology Reviews being prepared in accordance with a recommendation voted by the Coal Division in session at the Jubilee Meeting, Vancouver, April, 1948, that the Department of Mines and Resources be requested to arrange for publication by the proper Government authority of a Quarterly Review' of Coal Technology, for distribution among those concerned in the production and use of coal in Canada. This recommendation was subsequently endorsed both by the Council of the Institute and by the Dominion Coal Board. Further reviews (or digests) will appear at intervals in the Bulletin, or will be published and distributed by the Board which, meanwhile, has undertaken to distribute reprints of Mr. Ignatieff's review.-En. * * * The fields in coal mining technology which are considered to demand most attention and study at the present time are reviewed under the headings appearing below. Mechanization In the light of the growing shortage of skilled miners and the necessity of mitigating constantly increasing mining costs, interest continues to centre in mining methods and applications of mechanization chat will produce the maximum reduction of man power. The growth of strip or open-cut mining, also, is a consequence of this trend. Mechanization at the face attracts most attention and the trend is toward developing and adopting machines capable of cutting and loading the coal in one operation instead of having the separate operations of cutting, drilling, blasting, and loading. In Great Britain, where longwall mining is? the general practice, the A.B. Meco-Moore machine still receives much attention, and accounts describing its performance over reasonably long periods have appeared in the technical press.

Abstract A brief history of the electric arc furnace process of steel-making is given. The greater relative importance of this method of steel manufacture to the Canadian steel industry, as compared with its importance in the steel industry of the United States, is shown. The scope of the process is outlined and brief mention is made of the difficulty of obtaining melting stock low in alloy content. The physical chemistry of steel-making is discussed at length in simple terms, with emphasis on oxidation, de-oxidation, and the role of hydrogen. Carbide-type and silicon-type slags are described and the particular usefulness of each is outlined. The importance of various factors in the melting practice is evaluated on the basis of practical experience. Introduction Although electric furnace steels constitute only a small portion of the total weight of steel used in industrial operations, their importance is relatively much greater than is indicated by comparative tonnage figures. Tool steels, which are vital to all industry, are made almost exclusively by the basic electric arc furnace process, as are stainless steels, valve steels, and the higher alloy types of the class usually referred to as "alloy steels'. For many applications where steel other than electric furnace quality is often used, and when first cost is secondary to performance in service, the extra steel cost of electric furnace quality material is usually returned with interest by consistently longer service life. The electric furnace is pre-eminent in the quality alloy steel field because of the control that may be exercised over conditions of oxidation, de-oxidation, and temperature, the fundamental operations in steel making.

Introduction The Kirkland Lake (Ontario) property of Wright-Hargreaves Mines, Limited, - consists of four claims. The two main shear zones or 'breaks' of the Kirkland Lake camp extend through three of these claims, for a distance of approximately 3,500 feet. These claims are on the northeast side of the original lake. The water in this section of the lake has now been replaced with mill tailings. The degree of success of any completed undertaking, especially in the mining industry, reflects the personnel involved. I state with pleasure that the successful deepening of No. 5 winze from 6,400 feet to 7,272 feet was largely due to the co-operation and skilled workmanship of Shaft Captain J. Myelde and his efficient 'leaders'. This winze was sunk at a time when it was most difficult to obtain experienced shaftmen, with the result that the crews did not wholly consist of experienced men (although their desire to learn shaft sinking soon gave good results). This condition added greatly to the responsibilities and duties of those in charge, whose first consideration was for the safety of those engaged in the work, and I take great pride in recording that the entire sinking programme was completed without a lost-time accident. Location of Winze Due to the information obtained through deep diamond-drill holes collared below the 6,000-foot level being of sufficient importance to warrant further exploration, it was decided to deepen the existing No. 5 winze rather than sink another winze. This decision meant that the sinking must be co-ordinated with and proceed simultaneously with operations in the winze, where mining was being carried on between the 3,900-foot and 5,100-foot horizons, inclusive.
