"Increased demand for light-weighting in passenger vehicles has created a need for strong, light, ductile materials to be used in body-in-white applications. The AA6xxx-series of aluminum alloys are suitable candidates meeting most requirements but can fall short of the formability demands of designers, necessitating an understanding of what controls the formability in this alloy series. This work examines the effect of copper alloying in AA6xxx on the pre-ageing and natural ageing responses of the microstructure and mechanical properties. The changes in microstructure observed by differential scanning calorimetry and hardness testing are related to the work-hardening and strain-rate sensitivity parameters for these alloys measured by tensile testing. An observed asymmetry in the measured strain-rate sensitivity associated with increasing versus decreasing strain rate changes suggests that a different mechanism operates for the two conditions. It is postulated how this asymmetry in strain-rate sensitivity will impact the necking and ductility behaviour of these alloys.INTRODUCTION The widespread use of AA6xxx series alloys in the form of sheets has provided the need for a more thorough understanding of the complex interactions between composition, processing, resulting microstructure and ultimately, the mechanical properties of the alloys. Conventional industrial practices involve the production of rolled AA6xxx sheet (typically 1 mm thick) to be used for body-in-white (BIW) applications for auto body panels (Hirsch, 2004, 2014). The final metallurgical step prior to the shipment of these panels to manufacturers involves a solution heat treatment (SHT) reverting the ageing products of the alloys into solid solution and the product is then shipped to the customer. During this shipping time and while sheets are waiting to be used, the natural ageing (NA) process occurs whereby the strength of the alloys increases resulting in reduced formability. This can result in a product that is unable to meet the formability demands of the automotive manufacturer. As a result, industry has moved towards performing pre-ageing (PA) treatments to prolong the “shelf-life” of the material prior to it having insufficient formability. Once formed into BIW panels, the parts are then painted and subsequently undergo the paint curing heat treatment which consists of a short period of time at medium temperature, typically 20 minutes at 170–190°C. This short artificial ageing (AA) treatment, known as the paint bake (PB), provides additional strength and improved dent resistance for the material, but reduced formability. The PB result is strongly dependent on the PA treatment performed prior to the forming operation. Furthermore, the addition of copper (Cu) to a base Al-Mg-Si composition is known to increase the alloy’s strength. The goal of this work is to study the effect of Cu on strength, strain hardening, and strain-rate sensitivity (SRS) of these alloys, to understand the strength-formability compromise, for two separate heat treatment schedules; one including and one excluding the PA treatment, both followed by NA."

Oxygen reduction reaction in PEM fuel cell cathodes involves participation of three reactants - oxygen, hydrogen ions, and electrons. Electrochemical reaction in the catalyst layer is, therefore, influenced by how these species are transported to the reaction site. The two-phase boundary locations at which percolating networks of ionically conducting electrolyte and electronically conducting Pt/C meet are feasible reaction sites. The electrolyte phase also provides pathway for the transport of dissolved oxygen. Most of the 3-D models describe the catalyst layer as an ultra-thin layer, thereby, losing useful information on the distribution of electrochemical reaction rate. In this paper, we extend our previous work on 2-D cross-the-channel modeling of PEMFC cathode based on agglomerate catalyst layer. In particular, we take a closer look at the influence of proton conductivity on the reaction rate distribution in the catalyst layer. As well, we re-examine the role of anisotropic transport coefficient of the porous transport layer (PTL), commonly known as the gas diffusion layer, on the current density distribution under the channel and the rib of the flow-field plates. Results from both a 2¬D and a 3-D models will be presented.

Metallurgical vessel linings are multilayered, consisting of refractory bodies, insulation materials, joints, and additional space to control for thermal expansion. A unique biaxial hot testing press (BHTP) was installed at the RHI Refractories Technology Center Leoben, Austria to enable the three-dimensional behaviour of complex vessel lining segments to be investigated under simulated service conditions. Using the BHTP, the heat up and thermo-mechanical behaviour of magnesia chromite brick lining segments with and without mortar filled joints were examined. The results obtained during the initial heat up provided validation of CFD modelling of the lining system. In addition, after the heat up and under steady state conditions, the lining behaviour during deformation-controlled compression and relaxation was examined. These analyses generated important data regarding the stiffness, joint compressibility, and brick damage of the lining segments after cyclic loading and unloading as well as the benefits of using mortar joints in the lining. These investigations were performed in collaboration with the Christian Doppler Laboratory for Secondary Metallurgy of Nonferrous Metals, University of Leoben, Austria. The BHTP has been operational since November 2004 and is providing information regarding the thermo-mechanical behaviour of different lining segments.

Une étude régionale du développement du potentiel inier est présentée puis détaillée pour quatre secteurs: Rouyn-Dranda, Val d'Or-Malartic, Bousquet-Cadillac et Matagami.L' analyse est conduite a l' aide des paramètres suivants: temps, méthodes de découverte, profondeur des gisements et poids métal. Les courbes cumulatives illustrant le nombre de gisements découverts fonction du temps montrent une forme générale en ""S"" dont les i'iations de pentes correspondent aux variations dans les taux de couverte. Initiation, réalisation et stabilisation des cycles de décourté sont ainsi mis en évidence. Deux ""bourns miniers"", de 1922 à 1945 et de 1955 à 1965, rassemblent 72 % des mines identifiées sqú à présent.La plupart des mines sont trouvées en subsurface: 90% ont leur mmet entre 0 et 100 mètres de profondeur dont 70 % entre 0 et 10 êtres. Dans le temps, il y a d' abord récolte par prospection puis par ophysique et enfin, développement progressif du potentiel en proeur avec des méthodes composites. Environ 80% du poids métal extrait de 4 camps miniers, couvrant 8% de Ia surface régionale quelques gros gisements dominent /a production.Ces données permettent de proposer une nouvelle approche pour analyse d' une région minière:La distribution de Ia profondeur des gisements en fonction du temps est indicatrice de la maturité d' un camp minier et peut servir a évaluer son potentiel résiduel.L’analyse des courbes en ""S"" permet d’extrapoler les taux de succès relies aux différentes méthodes et met en relief le rôle crucial de I' innovation dans I' exploration.ABSTRACTSince 1906, some 130 deposits have been discovered in the Archean polymetallic belt of northwestern Quebec. "Résumé - Les seules productions de columbo-tantalite en Côte d'Ivoire sont effectuées dans les éluvions, colluvions et alluvions d'Issia, au Centre-Ouest de la Côte d'Ivoire. Même si un lien direct avec les roches granitiques est suspecté, aucune attention particulière n'a été accordée à l'étude de la minéralisation primaire en relation avec l'évolution de ces granites et des pegmatites associées. Ces granites, qui sont en intrusion dans les roches sédimentaires du Protérozoïque inférieur, comprennent: le granite orienté à deux micas (type Lobo), le granite orienté à muscovite dominante (type Bitapia) et le granite porphyroïde non orienté à muscovite dominante (type Issia). Les résultats de cette étude indiquent que les pegmatites à Nb-Ta-Be-Li sont liées au granite de type Issia. Les observations de terrain et les analyses sur roche totale montrent que: (1) les trois principaux granites de la région sont de type-S et peralumineux dans leur composition, (2) ils ont été formés pendant la période tardi- à post-Éburnéenne, (3) le granite de type Issia fut le dernier à se former.Les pegmatites liées au granite de type Issia ont été classées en quatre types : A- pegmatites stériles; B- pegmatites à Be; C- pegmatites zonées à Nb-Ta-Be; et D- pegmatites zonées à Be-Nb-Ta-Li. Les pegmatites zonées comprennent les zones suivantes: I- zone à aplite; II- zone graphique; III- zone à albite, microcline, béryl et columbo-tantalite; IV- zone à microcline massive; V- zone à quartztourmaline. Ces pegmatites présentent une zone d'altération métasomatique externe.La minéralisation de Ta, Nb, et Be est liée à la zone III des pegmatites de types C et D, la minéralisation de Li est associée aux greisens qui peuvent être observés n'importe où dans les pegmatites de type D. Les données de terrain et de laboratoire indiquent que le granite de type Issia est la roche parentale des pegmatites à éléments rares de la région. Les pegmatites minéralisées sont distribuées seulement autour du granite de type Issia et les patrons des terres rares des granites et ceux des pegmatites à éléments rares sont très similaires. Les analyses de la composition totale montrent un lien génétique entre le granite de type Issia et les pegmatites à éléments rares. Il est suggéré que les pegmatites ont été formées durant le transport et la cristallisation fractionnée du magma. Les éléments rares sont restés dans le liquide résiduel jusqu'à ce que les conditions favorables à leur précipitation soient atteintes.L'établissement de ce lien génétique ouvre des voies pour des nouvelles stratégies d'exploration."

Au printemps 2011, la Corporation minière Osisko met en production le gisement Canadian Malartic, qui devient la plus importante mine d?or à ciel ouvert au Canada. Pour lui faire place, elle a déménagé un quartier de 205 maisons et construit 6 nouveaux bâtiments institutionnels. Les démarches ont commencé en 2006. La compagnie a d?abord établi l?emplacement du nouveau quartier résidentiel, en collaboration avec la Ville de Malartic, puis fait la conception de ce quartier de manière à refléter au mieux les caractéristiques du quartier à déménager. Elle a ensuite effectué une opération d?assignation consistant à proposer à chaque propriétaire intéressé un lot dans le nouveau quartier. Au total, 140 résidences ont été déménagées en 2008 et 2009 et 65 été rachetées par la compagnie, le tout par des ententes de gré à gré sauf pour un seul cas. La réussite d?une opération d?une telle importance sociale n?a été possible que parce que la compagnie s?est assurée d?un soutien massif de la population et des autorités pendant tout le processus. Cette expérience peut être fort utile pour les nombreux projets miniers dont l?insertion dans la communauté est un enjeu important.

Higher employer costs and increased employee benefits will result from the current sweeping revisions of the un-employment insurance system now receiving consideration before Parliament. The new legislation, the Un-employment Insurance Act, 1971, will substantially increase the unemployment insurance costs of many employers through an increase in the level of employer contributions -generally, employer contributions will go to 1.4 times employee costs -as well as by extending coverage to many classes of employees now exempt. Under the new legislation, executives, technicians, teachers, institutional workers and others will be covered, and eligible for the higher benefits which it provides. For the first time, absence from work because of illness or accident may qualify individuals for unemployment insurance benefits.

"The United Nations, through the secretariat of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) and its Ad Hoc Group of Experts on Harmonization of Fossil Energy and Mineral Resources Terminology, developed the Framework Classification.The UN Classification applies to fossil energy and mineral reserves and resources located on or below the Earth's surface. It aims to simplify reporting of energy and mineral reserves and resources in a globalized world and is intended to improve global communications regarding remaining quantities of non-renewable fossil energy and mineral resources. The UN Classification is not recognized as a Foreign Code under NI 43-101.SECTION I1.,The United Nations Framework Classification (UNFC-2009) applies to fossil energy and mineral reserves and resources located on or below the Earth' s surface. It serves the needs for classification at a global level (for energy and mineral supply studies), for governments (resources management and policy formulation), for industry (business process management) and for financial reporting.SECTION II2.,The UNFC is a generic system in which quantities are classified on the basis of the three fundamental criteria of economic and social viability (E), field project status and feasibility (F), and geological knowledge (G), using a numerical coding system. Combinations of these criteria create a three-dimensional system. Categories (e.g. El, E2, E3) and, in some cases, sub-categories (e.g. E1.1) are defined for each of the three criteria as set out and defined in Annexes I and II.3 The first set of categories (the E axis) designates the degree of favourability of social and economic conditions in establishing the commercial viability of the project, including consideration of market prices and relevant legal, regulatory, environmental and contractual conditions. The second set (the F axis) designates the maturity of studies and commitments necessary to implement mining plans or development projects. These extend from early exploration efforts before a deposit or accumulation has been confirmed to exist through to a project that is extracting and selling a commodity, and reflect standard value chain management principles. The third set of categories (the G axis) designates the level of confidence in the geological knowledge and potential recoverability of the quantities.4. The categories and sub-categories are the building blocks of the system, and are combined in the form of ""classes"". The UNFC can be visualised in three dimensions, as shown in Figure 1, or represented in a practical two-dimensional abbreviated version as shown in Figure 2."

"This preliminary paper provides a summary of lab and mill flotation investigations into the copper collector at two Canadian operations. The orebodies illustrated in these studies both contain mainly copper and zinc with uneconomic quantities of lead. Silver is also present as a secondary precious metal.Each mill has advanced to the extended mill trial stage with Uniflot SP129 as the sole copper collector. The preliminary metallurgical results have indicated higher copper circuit zinc and lead rejection is possible as shown in Case Study #2. In Case Study #1, improved zinc circuit metallurgy has been realized during all the Uniflot copper circuit collector trials. A slight increase in silver recovery has also been observed in the extended trials at both operations. INTRODUCTIONThe Canadian base metal industry is presently going through a rationalization period in response to low metal prices and low grade ore bodies. The response from flotation mills has been to reduce costs by incorporating new technologies such as energy efficient large cells, low moisture pressure filters and low steel consumption SAG mills. Other optimization strategies have been incorporated to get better metallurgical performance such as improved process control and monitoring techniques.The newer flotation plants have embraced many of the latest equipment innovations but they continue to incorporate off-the shelf reagents like xanthate and methylisobutylcarbinol (MIBC) . New collector chemistries have been mostly unsuccessful. Our approach incorporates the best of the old and new chemistry into proprietary formulations that match the application. We have found most single chemical formulations cannot meet the demands of the optimized modern flotation plant."

"The corrosion of commercially pure titanium (CP-Ti) was studied from room temperature up to medium temperature (~160°C) under conditions relevant to medium temperature chalcopyrite leaching processes. The corrosion rates were measured by immersion and electrochemical tests in sulfuric acid. The influences of chloride, cupric and ferric ions on the corrosion rate and behavior were also investigated. Corrosion of the CP-Ti did not account for the total current density measured by linear polarization tests. The corrosion rates of CP-Ti under medium temperature leaching conditions were surprisingly high. The corrosion rate measured in ferric containing solution at 160°C was approximately 20 mm/yr.INTRODUCTIONTitanium exhibits excellent corrosion resistance in many aggressive environments because of the formation of a very chemically stable, highly adherent, and protective oxide film on its surface (Mitsuo et al., 2002). Because titanium is the only metal available at a reasonable cost that resists the high temperature corrosive slurries in many leaching processes, it is often chosen as autoclave liner material where it is subjected to severe conditions of acidity, temperature and pressure (Grauman and Say, 2000).A number of distinctly different hydrometallurgical processes for the pressure leaching of chalcopyrite have been developed and patented by various companies and they can be classified into low, medium and high temperature regimes (McDonald and Muir, 2007). For example, chalcopyrite concentrate may be processed at medium temperatures (115-175°C) and pressures of 800-2200 kPa (Dreisinger, D., 2006; Sahu and Asselin, 2011). The lixiviant may contain 20 to 55 g/L sulfuric acid, 8 to 12 g/L chloride ions, 10-25 g/L Cu2+ (Jones, 1995, 1997, 1999), and less than 1 g/L Fe3+ (Defreyne et al., 2005). The amount of these additions is determined by the grade of the ores and details are shown in Table 1."

"This study considers two lead/zinc/silver orebodies which have historically had a problem with pyrite, pyrrhotite and sphalerite contamination in the lead circuit. The problem was previously addressed with high dosages of sodium cyanide as the primary depressant. However, large amounts of cyanide led to environmental problems in the effluent, especially during winter months. The objective was to reduce cyanide consumption while maintaining or improving overall lead grade and recovery via the reduction of the undesirable sulphides.Extensive laboratory and mill testing was necessary to determine the optimal operating parameters for continuous plant application. Evaluation of data received from this testing has shown that selective addition and optimization of the dosage of Unimax SD100 to specific areas of the flotation and grinding circuits has resulted in improved Pb grade and recovery. Parameters such as pH control, regrind operation, the cyanide/Unimax ratio and sulphide mineral content may also affect the performance of the depressant. Each factor is discussed and optimal operating conditions were determined based on the testing.Results are presented for two case studies. Both indicate that Unimax SD100 improves the lead grade/recovery curve by increasing iron and zinc rejection while reducing cyanide consumption and the resulting environmental concerns. 1. Hart"

A series of experiments examined silver extraction from a high-grade sulfide concentrate employing thiourea solution. Thiourea was initially oxidized with hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) to form formamidine disulfide (FADS) and used to extract silver from the as-received concentrate and after various pretreatments. Very low recoveries (~30%) were obtained with the as-received concentrate due to competitive cementation reactions by metallic iron and easily oxidizable copper phases. Over 80% Ag recovery was obtained when the concentrate was pretreated to remove this iron and copper. The results suggest that an oxidative acid pretreatment of this concentrates significantly improves silver recovery upon leaching with thiourea.

"The most economical way of dewatering mineral concentrates is to reduce the moisture content in the material mechanically using thickeners and filtration avoiding thermal drying whenever possible. In addition to this, the dewatering process should produce low moisture cake, high quality liquid, consume little energy. As a part of the dewatering process The CERAMEC® capillary filter has been proven to meet these requirements in over 150 installations. The filtration is done by using ceramic filter plates with small pore size. The capillary action in the filter medium secures gas free filtration at good vacuum, and due to the small pore size, filtrate is crystal clean and particle free. The energy consumption is minimal. This paper will discuss results from filters installed at Pyhäsalmi Mine Oy in Finland where the technology was has been used since the late eighties. Results from more recent installations like Los Pelambres in Chile and LKAB in Sweden will also be discussed.INTRODUCTIONThe idea of using capillary action to make dewatering more efficient was invented two decades ago. Ten years later whole filter plants utilizing the new method were delivered to mine concentrators for dewatering of mineral concentrates. Further development of ceramic membrane plates made it possible to meet the requirements in iron ore dewatering. In addition to low cake moisture, high capacity and low energy consumption, there are a lot of environmental advantages in using capillary filtration. One of them is clear filtrate.CAPILLARY FILTRATIONA micro-porous filter material behaves like a large number of narrow capillaries forming a network. When a pressure difference ?P is applied over the wetted, hydrophilic pore with the radius r, the force striving to push the water out of the pore will be ?Ppr2. "Petro-Canada's project investigative and experimental underground work in the Galt coal seam at Kipp, Alberta included the construction of an emergency egress and ventilation raise from surface.The Galt coal seam is 206 m below the surface and covered by 8 m of shale, sandstone and clay beds of the Oldman Formation, 128 m of shale, bentonite beds and sandstone of the Bearpaw Formation, and 70 m of glacial till and basal gravel. Free water was encountered from sand lenses in the glacial till and the basal gravel.Excavation for the ventilation raise was a nominal 2 m diameter and it was lined with a welded, continuous, steel liner of 1.2 m 1.D.Excavation in the glacial till was carried out with a surface bucket drill rig combined with hand mining. Ground support in the glacial till consisted of liner plates and backfill grout. The Bearpaw and Oldman formations were excavated by employing standard raise boring techniques. The individual liner sections of the continuous steel liner were assembled on surface and the entire liner column was lowered into the raise by employing hydraulic lift climbers. The liner column was back-filled with concrete.IntroductionThe Lethbridge Coal Field comprises an area of approximately 1 165 square km in the vicinity of Lethbridge in southern Alberta. Pacific Petroleums Ltd. proposed in a Preliminary Disclosure in January 1979 ""to open an experimental mine prior to development of a producing underground mine with an initial rate of 540,000 tonnes per year"". A 2 900-hectare group of leases in the Kipp-Coalhurst area was selected as the primary target for the Kipp experimental mine. The scope of work for the experimental mine included the construction of an access shaft with production capabilities, the construction of a ventilation and emergency exit raise, drive-ages in coal to yield a bulk sample, gathering of geotechnical information and the testing of experimental mining methods."

"THE MAYO AREA was prospected as early as 1887. The first major activity started in 1898, when the Stewart River and its tributaries were examined for placer deposits, and in succeeding years the district became a small producer of placer gold. The first discovery of the lead-zinc-silver mineralization which has become the main interest of the district occurred in 1906, when a vein was found in the canyon of Galena Creek on the northwest slope of Galena Hill. This deposit was later known as the Silver King mine. In 1919 further discoveries were made on Keno Hill, approximately 15 miles east of the Silver King, the most important being the No.9 vein. Directly or indirectly, these finds are attributable to the search for placer gold, as galena was frequently found in the stream gravels.The 1919 Keno Hill discoveries were acquired by Yukon Gold Co. and operated through a subsidiary, Keno Hill Ltd., from 1920 to 1923. Most of the production came from No.9 vein. In 1921 Treadwell Yukon Corporation entered the field and acquired the Ladue mine. This company continued to operate for 21 years. It acquired in succession the Ladue, Sadie, Friendship, Lucky Queen, Elsa, Silver King, and Calumet mines. Its record of successful operations is very largely the achievement of the late Livingston Wernecke. Under his direction, the Treadwell Yukon Corp. produced metals with a gross value in excess of $21,000,000, in the face of greater transportation problems than exist today and with considerably lower metal prices.Treadwell Yukon ceased operations in 1942. Its entire assets were acquired in 1946 by United Keno Hill Mines Ltd., which has substantially increased the original holdings. It has drawn the bulk of its production from the Hector mine, adjacent to the Calumet. The Hector was not developed by Treadwell Yukon because of legal disputes among the vendors. It has proven to be the largest deposit yet discovered in the district."

The idea of veneering rich yellow gold alloys with a low-melting, high expansion porcelain, has been a driving force for metal-ceramic research in dentistry. Since 1990, with the advent of the Carrara System (1), a low firing temperature veneering ceramic allowed the use of gold alloys with a lower content of platinum and palladium than the traditional gold-platinum ceramic alloys and thus a richer yellow color. The earlier high gold-platinum ceramic alloys contained at least 12 percent platinum group metals to allow for dimensional stability when firing the relatively high melting traditional ceramics. This amount of platinum group metals gave the alloys a greyish tinge which made them unattractively steel colored and difficult to present as ?high gold alloys?. In the 90?s the new generation universal low-melting, high expansion gold alloys gained market share at a steady rate, starting in Germany, and have now for a great part replaced the traditional gold-platinum alloys (Fig. 1). The first alloys contained 75 wt-% gold and up to 9 wt-% platinum or palladium. They provided a metal-ceramic system in which a gold alloy having an aesthetic yellow colour is fired on with a dental porcelain tailored thereto. The tailoring is meant in respect of compatible coefficients of thermal expansion, and compatible melting or softening points of metal and porcelain. The major concerns in the beginning were with thermal stability during firing, the thermal expansion coefficient of the alloy against the porcelain (compatibility) and the yellow color. In a later stage, alloys with gold contents in the range of 50-60 wt-% gold were developed in analogy with the pale yellow gold-reduced alloys that were formerly used for crown & bridge work and the white gold-reduced alloys used for metal veneering where gold was substituted in part by palladium.
