Bauxite resources in China are mainly diaspore ore with the characteristics of low ratio silicon to aluminum. In order to obtain high quality of alumina product, flotation process is generally used to extract the aluminum from diaspore ore. Small aeration rate is needed for bauxite flotation, which requires air to be controlled accuracy. In addition, productive froth from bauxite flotation is too sticky to effects froth transportation. Air-forced XCF/KYF flotation machines are helpful for aeration control, while self-suction GF flotation machines benefits froth transportation. Zhongzhou aluminum plant of China Aluminum Group (Chinalco) uses 7 series of XCF/KYF /GF combined flotation machines to process bauxite. Air distribution, suspension characteristics, froth flow velocity and Al2O3 recovery were investigated, to evaluate the performance of flotation machines in one series and determine recovery contribution of each cell to the entire flotation circuit.The air distribution degree varies from 3 to 4, which is enough for bauxite floatation process. Froth in the tank could flow smoothly with a flow velocity of 2.4m/min. The recovery of the first KYF-40 flotation cell is the largest. Flotation concentrate of Al2O3 is up to 64.29%, the total recovery is about 75%, and the ratio of Al/Si has reached 10.4.

IN 1934 Newfoundland, after extravagant operation based on exaggerated ideas of what she had to work with, became bankrupt, ceased to be a self-governing Dominion, and passed into the hands of a Commission. Since the days of Dawson, Canadians have been taught that no country in the world is as rich as their own. This idea has become a religion; contrary views are heresy, and are suppressed even by technical organizations and government departments. Following the alleged habit of the ostrich, we have buried our heads in the sand and have refused to face the facts. This policy of "to have today and to hell with tomorrow" is now bearing fruit. After forty years of operation on the basis of unlimited natural wealth, with resulting over-expansion, wholesale depletion of capital assets, and huge borrowings, we are, now that our wealth has been shown to be very limited, face to face with the status of Newfoundland. Already, in this Province, commission government of bankrupt municipalities is not uncommon. The ostrich is referred to as the most foolish bird in the world. That is not the case-no ostrich ever hid his head in the sand. In the clear air of his home on the South African veldt, an area characterized by low bushes, he is a conspicuous object. When danger approaches, he lowers his head; matches his background, the bushes; and danger passes him by. This leaves the Canadian, with his head still in the sand, to fill the r61e cast for the ostrich. Fortunately, a few Canadians never did get their heads covered; others are getting them out far enough to see what is going on. Their comments are very much to the point. "Nowhere in the world," says Mr. Meighen, "has more harm been done to any country by an exaggeration of its resources and potentialities than has been done in Canada'.

Introduction It is common experience that on re-heating a fully martensitic steel below the Ac, point, a softer and tougher structure is formed as the tempering temperature is raised. The mechanism of tempering of plain carbon and low-alloy steels has been the subject of many investigations. In a very comprehensive study, Cohen and associates have recently established three different tempering stages, the last of which reaches completion at about 700°F., with heating rates of 5°F. per minute. This latter stage has been established ta be the carbide-forming stage, so that the steel consists of a mixture of ferrite and carbide, which are the metastable equilibrium phases. Any subsequent changes which take place at higher temperatures below the Ac, point in the absence of graphitization or carbide lattice conversion normally consist of agglomeration of the carbide particles. This naturally results in the softening of the steel. However, in many cases the Ac, point, as determined by dilatometry, thermal analysis, etc., only gives a rough estimate of the temperature where the reaction, ferrite plus carbides to austenite, is initiated. This appears to be especially true in the case of alloy steels in which three phases can co-exist in certain temperature ranges. Bain has given data on the three-phase equilibrium in both manganese and nickel steels. In these steels, the formation of austenite at temperatures just above the AeIL apparently involves the diffusion of the alloying elements to the first pools of austenite, thereby making the process very sluggish. As a consequence, the critical Ac points determined by ordinary methods at normal rates of heating can be quite distant from the true equilibrium Ae temperatures.

In 2003, Phelps Dodge Mining Company decided to pursue the design and construction of a Central Analytical Laboratory to provide chemical analyses for their Arizona and New Mexico operations. This centralized approach was selected in place of refurbishing six (6) older laboratories that operated at the various Phelps Dodge sites, and which would not have permitted full automation and use of robotics. The new lab was designed by the Process Technology Center (PTC) Material Characterization Group in cooperation with IMP Group. The Central Analytical Service Center (CASC) encompasses fully automated sample preparation of blast holes and geological samples weighing up to 15 kg/sample. The CASC also includes the first "wet chemistry module" worldwide to be operated by robotics systems to perform Total Cu, Acid Soluble Cu, and Quick Leach Tests (QLT), and a fully automated lab for electrowon copper cathode. The new lab also offers flexibility for handling specialty samples and analyses by either semi-automated or manual mode. Data handling and transfer is accomplished using the commercially available StarLIMS system. Commissioning was accomplished within five (5) months of startup during which the CASC also handled 86% of a full production load. The 24/7 lab operation has already exceeded its design capacity, has achieved considerable savings in operating cost, reduced sample preparation errors, and significantly increased analytical quality.

For several years, the GDD SSW EM Probe is being used in nickel?s mines in Canada and Brazil to define ore limits, reduce dilution and predict nickel grades. It is used with success to test most if not all percussion blast holes at all Falconbridge Mines in Sudbury and Raglan and all Inco?s Thompson mines. However, after testing the SSW Probe in other metal mines, we realized that EM conductivity does not define ore limits by testing blast holes for copper, zinc or gold. For non-conductive ores, no instrumentation is yet available on the market to reduce dilution, by outlining quickly and inexpensively the real shape of an orebody. To that effect, Instrumentation GDD Inc has developed a new revolutionary photonic probe that will make the reduction of dilution possible by probing blast holes. Once surveyed with the probe, a computer draws graphs of the ore grade as a function of depth for each blast hole. A contribution by Canada Economic Development made possible the development of this new technology. Canmet and Soredem also cautioned this technology developed by Instrumentation GDD Inc. This new photonic probe will allow: 1) to better understand the shape of the orebody 2) to raise the grade of the ore fed to the mill 3) a more complete extraction of the ore 4) to raise the competitiveness of mines

"AbstractTwo bottom-hole samples have been taken from two new completions in the Turner Valley field, Royalite Lowery No. 8 on the west flank and Royalite No. 73, which was deepened into a lower fault block, on the northeast flank. From the bottom-hole oil of Royalite Lowary No. 8 a synthetic sample was prepared to simulate the original fluid in the reservoir, saturated at the gas-oil contact conditions. The sample from Royalite Lewery No. 8 has been shown to be the original fluid present at this well and represents the oil phase near the oil-water contact in• the reservoir. Complete chemical analysis, P.V.T., and viscosity data have been obtained on these reservoir fluids, which represent the range of saturation from the gas-oil to the oil-water contact in the Turner Valley oil structures. Sampling techniques and the application of the analytical data to reservoir conditions and field operations are discussed. Super-compressibility curves for an average separator tail gas have also been prepared. These data have not been available before. They will be of fundamental value in futu.re reservoir engineering studies of this field and will also serve as a guide in determining operating practices."

Introduction 1.-lmportance of Physical Nature of Condensates The metals of commercial interest which have reasonably high vapour pressures below 1,200° C. are mercury, cadmium, sodium, zinc, magnesium, lithium, and calcium. With the exception of mercury, these metals occupy high positions on the electrochemical series and form compounds with very high negative free-energies of formation. It is highly desirable that such metals should not be produced in a form which is finely divided, on account of their reactivity with atmospheric gases. Powders of magnesium, calcium, and even zinc (blue powder) are dangerous to handle and cannot be coalesced by simple melting techniques. Vaporization in vacuo forms a convenient method of handling and purifying the alkaline earth metals in particular and a previous paper by the authors dealt with some of the factors controlling the separation of metals by this technique (12). An essential part of the operation is the condensation of the vapour to produce a massive deposit which may be conveniently melted and handled by established metallurgical techniques. This investigation sought to determine the conditions affecting the nature of solid condensates.

"1.0 SummaryThe Pierina deposit was acquired in August 1996 when Barrick Gold Corporation purchased Arequipa Resources, a junior mining company with extensive land positions in Peru. At the time of acquisition, Arequipa had developed two exploration tunnels and drilled 9 exploration holes on the property. Metallurgical tests, conducted on samples taken from the tunnels and the exploration holes indicated that the ore was amenable to heap leaching. Barrick’s exploration team recognised from the outset, the potential of the mineralisation and convinced Barrick’s senior management that this was indeed a world class deposit that should be pursued. On November 25, 1998, the first dore was poured at Pierina, 27 months from the time of acquisition. During that period Barrick completed its exploration programme, prepared a development plan including capital and operating costs, production profiles and cash flow forecasts, and a schedule to develop a mine and construct a leach pad and gold recovery plant, including all supporting infrastructure. All permits and environmental approvals were obtained and all necessary land was acquired. The project was completed on schedule and under budget. This was the first greenfield mine development for Barrick outside of North America.This paper details, mainly, the research and development, engineering, construction and commissioning of the metallurgical process facilities.2.0 The Develonment ProgrammeImmediately after the acquisition, Barrick began the process of gathering information required to prepare a project development plan. "The Pierre Beauchemin gold deposit, situated 15 km NW of Rouyn-Noranda, produces an average of 1050 tonnes of ore a day. Reserves are 1.2 Mt grading 5.6 g/t Au. The deposit, located in a shear zone within the Flavrianpluton, in the Blake River Group, is hosted by four major rock types: meta-trondhjemite, meta-tonalite, hybrid rocks and meta-diorite (the prefu; ""meta-"" is omitted thereafter). The trondhjemite, tonalite, and metamorphic hybrid rocks are spatially distributed as a series of sub-horizontal tabular sills that form a genetically related group. Early fractures that permitted either the emplacement of pre-diorite felsic dikes or the formation of a visible alteration caused by early fluid circulation might have been developed in response to initial strain created during regional deformation. These fractures were precursors to the emplacement of diorite and the development of major shear planes. Sub-horizontal north-trending en échelon diorite lenses are observed at the mine. Together, these diorite lenses constitute larger scale diorite zones which are observed at the scale of the pluton. The diorite zones are interpreted as evidence of an episode of sub-vertical extension sustained by the layered trondhjemite, tonalite and hybrid system. The anisotropy created by the less competent sub-horizontal en échelon diorite was an important factor. In shear zone development and subsequent mineralization. The tonalite and diorite accommodated further defomation and developed the main N030°/40° ESE shears along with the spatially associated N060°/50°-60° SSE, and the N000°/10°-40° E shear zones. The N000° shears are interpreted as refracted or deflected equivalents of the N030° shears. The combined shears compose the Eldrich shear system which trends approximately N030°/40° ESE and has had a general reverse movement with a minor sinistral component.Gold mineralization occurs in all four major rock types as en échelon sigmoidal shaped lenses associated with the major N030° deformation system. The distribution of ore lenses can be divided into two categories: The first category occupies sub-horizontal diorite zones. The lenses trend N-S, dip 100 40° E, and are associated with shear zones, sub-horizontal fractures or tonalite-diorite contact planes. The second category of lenses is found in felsic granitic rocks; the lenses trend either N0300!40°ESE or N060°/50°-60° SSE. Local hydraulic breccia zones are observed near ore zones occupying felsic granitic rocks. These breccias may have resulted from high fluid pressures brought upon by confinement as a result of impermeable zones in an anisotropic tonalite-diorite system."

"Uranium mining and processing typically requires large quantities of high-grade reactive quicklime for the neutralization and clean-up of contaminated mine water and mill process waste streams. Currently the Saskatchewan uranium industry’s lime requirements are being supplied from deposits located in Manitoba and Alberta, resulting in transportation costs, which equal or exceed the market value of the product. During the summer of 2001, the northern village of Pinehouse located 220 kilometers south of the Key Lake uranium mill, staked two previously discovered limestone deposits. The relatively shallow deposits, known as Missi Island and Sleeping Giant are located in close proximity to one another, approximately 35 km south of Pinehouse adjacent to highway 914. This paper describes the results of a scoping study carried out by AMEC for the development of the two deposits based on a seasonal limestone mine and a continuous 40,000 to 60,000 tpy wood fired calcining plant designed to supply all of the quicklime needs of the Saskatchewan based uranium industry. Also described are the results of calcining and customer acceptance testwork on samples of lime prepared from recent Pinehouse limestone drill core. The potential benefits of the project include a significant new source of revenue for the community of Pinehouse, lower lime costs for the Saskatchewan uranium industry and employment for northerners in the mining, processing and wood harvesting operations.IntroductionInterest in the Pinehouse/Massinahigan River area for limestone was precipitated by the results of a 1977 industrial minerals drill hole program by the Saskatchewan Department of Mineral Resources. These results led to the acquisition of land in the area by Missi Island Mines Ltd who carried out extensive exploration during the period 1978-1982. They discovered a deposit on the southwest side of the Massinihigan River thought to contain approximately seven million tonnes of limestone with an average grade of 94.5% CaCO3. Missi Island carried out preliminary feasibility studies and prepared an Environmental Overview Statement. However, in spite of positive recommendations, the project was dropped in the mid 1980’s."

In making this plea for a better and more sympathetic understanding of the non-metallic industry, I do not for one minute wish to give the impression that I in any way belittle the wonderful strides that have been made in the exploitation of our metallics. We in Canada can be justly proud of our Sudburys, Norandas, Flin Fions, and of the remarkable growth of the Consolidated in British Columbia, and at the same time, without in the !east detracting from these worthy undertakings, be equally as proud of our asbestos, gypsum, salt, and coal deposits, as well as of our building-stone and limestone industries. If, in my remarks, I have occasion to compare the metallic with the non-metallic industry, I do so, not with any idea of dimming the glory which the metallics of Canada have gained- not only in our own country, but in the world at large-but for the purpose? of bringing to your attention the fact, perhaps not very well recognized, that Canada contains deposits of non-metallics well worth y of your serious consideration. In the past 33 years, namely, since 1895, the value of non-metallics produced in Canada has exceeded the value of metallics in 19 of the years, and for the last three years has been increasing rapidly. The war years (1915-1918 inclusive) naturally saw an intensive metallic production, but since that time, with the exception of 1925, when there was a general depression throughout the whole country, the non-metallics have been in the ascendency.

After all, the operating efficiency of the plant impacts directly on the measures of profitability.A mineral processing plant is a complex system that has a number of distinct, but mutually dependent elements: process equipment, instrumentation, operating policies, maintenance policies, control strategies and people. To ensure maximum economic performance in the dynamic environment that characterizes a concentrator, requires a periodic review of each of these areas. However, to be useful, the study must be based on sound metallurgical principles and be conducted in a highly focussed manner. Experience has shown that the exercise is very revealing and rewarding.This paper will discuss the plant audit process and illustrate its potential value through examples taken from plant studies."

"7.1. Glossary of the Platinum-Group Minerals7.1.1. IntroductionA glossary of the platinum-group minerals (POM) serves as a useful introduction to a chapter on their mineralogy. Earlier glossaries (Cabri, 1972, 1976) were prepared for different purposes and composed in a different manner. As for most mineralogical textbooks, from Dana's System of Mineralogy, 3rd Edition (1850) , to Fleischer's Glossary of Mineral Species (1980), this glossary is primarily a chemical classification, arranged here in two tables. Table 7.1 groups the mineralforming compounds of the six platinum-group elements (POE) according to their essential anion(s) or according to the nonPOE element in intermetallic compounds. Table 7.2 is a similar listing for the native metals and alloys of the POE. Both tables include unidentified POM considered to be bona fide new minerals requiring additional study for complete characterization and recognition (see Chapter 9*). Some information on the chemistry of the POM is given in the sections on X-ray data (7 .2) and ore microscopy (7 .3). Because the overwhelming majority of POM have been characterized by the electron microprobe, a more detailed account of representative analyses is given in Chapter 8**. The total POM listed in Tables 7.1 and 7.2 is about 100, after deleting some which would not qualify as discrete species if found today, but which are still recognized on historical grounds; e.g. iridosmine, osmiridium, platiniridium. Tables 7.1 and 7.2 also include 28 unnamed POM; included because they are considered to be probably new species (Cabri 1981 b). The referral scheme for unnamed minerals is the same as in Chapter 9. There are considerably more palladium minerals known than other POM; the proportion of total species (listed in Tables 7.1 and 7 .2) for the POE is: Pd 48%, Pt 21 o/o , Ru and Ir 9% each, Rh 8% and Os 5%. These proportions are in marked contrast to the estimated cosmic abundance, as compiled for average type C1 chondrite by Naldrett and Duke (1980): Pt 29%, Ru 20%, Pd, Ir and Os 15% each, and Rh 6%."

The plugging effect of bacteria was investigated by injecting various concentrations of dead bacteria cells though sandstone cores. Pressure profiles along the cores were recorded periodically during the injection cycles. The plugging effect was analyzed using a plot of the ratio of reduced permeabilities to the initial permeability versus input volume. Results indicated that Tock permeability has little effect on plugging, but that the concentration of bacteria in the injection water has a significant effect on plugging characteristics. The pressure profile curves showed that bacteria penetrated several inches through the core but that the greater portion of the bacteria accumulated at the in-put end of the core.

"The paper describes the rapid development of, and operational experience in the utilization of, pneumatic low-pressure pipeline hoisting systems to vertically convey raw coal and rock through shafts, supplementing shaft capacity-the greatest lift to date being 535 m.A typical installation has raised over 250,000 tonnes in less than one year from a depth of 413 m through a 350/ 400-mm pipeline at a rate of 85 tonnes per hour. Operational experience on seven systems has provided valuable data on performance and operating costs.The main advantages of the systems lie in the flexibility of the pipeline to occupy existing free space in shafts and underground roadways, the relatively low first cost, the short delivery and installation time, and the economical running cost.Conclusions are therefore reached on future applications for example, the use of boreholes in older mines where new production technology has outstripped shaft or slope capacity, inter-level hoisting to implement concentration on transport roads and perhaps full mine output from relatively small mines.IntroductionIt is seven years since the basic art and practice of the pneumatic hoisting of minerals was described. The technique was developed in Western Canada by Radmark Engineering and found favour in the United Kingdom with the National Coal Board. Engineering and commercial feasibility trails were conducted in collaboration with the Mining Department and Mining Research and Development Establishment of the N.C.B. There was also considerable involvement with the British Health and Safety Executive.During the last five years, rapid progress has been made in the installation of new systems in the United Kingdom, Hungary and other countries. The operational experience gained makes it possible to report ""in depth"" on these installations, which cover a wide range of different physical mining applications."

"The Pogo project is located on the Goodpaster River, 38 miles north of Delta Junction in east central Alaska. Sumitomo Metal Mining and Teck Corporation are planning to develop a 2,500 ton per day underground mine and mill at Pogo. A preliminary resource of 5.5 million ounces of gold has been identified in two flat lying lenses. An underground adit has been developed to facilitate underground drilling of the deposit and to provide samples for bench and pilot scale metallurgical testwork.Flowsheet development included the evaluation of several processing options. The final flowsheet selected includes SAGhall mill grinding, gravity concentration with intensive cyanidation and direct electrowinning, sulfide flotation with ultrafine regrinding, and cyanide leaching and CIP gold recovery from the flotation concentrates. Flotation tailings will be filtered for placement in a dry stack storage facility or disposed of as paste backfill underground. All of the CIP tailings will be disposed of underground as paste backfill. A pilot plant was carried out to evaluate the proposed flowsheet described above and to confirm the gravity recovery predictions.Great care was taken in the development of the flowsheet and site layout concepts to mitigate the environmental impact of the proposed operation. An overview of the site water management concepts is presented and the impact of water issues on the process flowsheet is discussed."
