In recent years, a number of significant developments have occurred in the steel industry which are no-table and of general interest. This paper is confined to the steel-melting phase of the business. The development of high production rates on Stelco's Basic Open Hearth furnaces is chronologically summarized. Al-though various aspects of this subject have been presented previously, this paper summarizes the developments in high fuel rates, the usage of basic refractories, low and high oxygen rates and hearth maintenance. Background T HE interest which has been shown in steelmaking techniques in the past few years has been due, primarily, to the extremely high production rates obtained. Upon further study of the facilities and techniques employed to generate this steel at record rates, tonnage oxygen appears as the common factor. It can be stated that tonnage oxy-gen has revolutionized steelmaking techniques to a degree never before encountered. "The toxicity reduction of emissions from two diesel engines by the emulsification of water into fuel oil was investigated to determine the applicability of such systems to underground mining machinery. . The engines studied were: 1) the Deut; F6L7J4, four-stroke, air-cooled, 6-cylinder, V-configuration, indirect-injection (IDl) engine, and 2) the Detroit Deisel Allison Division 8V7JN, two-stroke, water-cooled, 8-cylinder, V-configuration, direct-injection (Dl) engine.The application of emulsified fuel treatment to the two-stroke engine did not prove to be practicable. In the case of the Deutz engine, however, substantial benefit resulted. For a modest J5 per cent water content in the fuel and an injection timing of24° BTDC, approximate reductions of40 per cent in the concentrations of both particulate matter and nitric oxide (NO) were produced. These reductions were accompanied by insignificant changes in other toxic constituents. The net result was an approximate 30 per cent reduction in the over-all exhaust toxicity for typical LHD operation as assessed by the Health Effects Index criterion. This toxicity reduction represents a significant advance from the points of view of an improved underground environment and/or reduced ventilation costs."

At Vale Inco in Sudbury, underground mobile equipment production and maintenance data is presently collected manually from paper slips. This paper reviews a pilot project that developed a system to electronically collect that data. The benefits and improvements in data accuracy, timeliness and reduction in collection effort, will be discussed. Technological issues that arose from the use of WiFi, RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) and the IREDES mine data equipment standard are also discussed.

Highland Valley Copper is a large open pit copper mine in the southern interior of British Columbia. Machine guidance technology using the Global Positioning System (GPS), was first implemented at the mine in late 1996 for blast hole drill navigation. The purchase of a third BE49R drill in 1998 completed the change to GPS navigation for all the mine?s drilling. The acceptance of this technology was almost immediate at both the operator and management levels. With the purchase of a new P&H 2800 shovel in 1997, the opportunity was taken to extend GPS navigation to a shovel. Due to communication restrictions, this was not as successful as envisaged. In late 1999, following a cost benefit analysis, a three-shovel trial of Caterpillar?s Computer Aided Earthmoving System (CAES), was initiated. The trial was successfully concluded in June 2000 and a further two shovels were equipped. Acceptance of this system has been very good at all levels, which has undoubtedly contributed to its success. In September 2000, CAES was extended to the dozer fleet with the purchase of a new track dozer. The CAES equipped dozer is used for pit production and project work. It is planned to extend CAES to the rest of the shovel fleet in 2001, along with a production front-end loader and one or two more track dozers.

"Cerro de Maimón is located in the Dominican Republic on the island of Hispaniola approximately 75 kilometers northwest of the capital city, Santo Domingo. The processing facility consisted of two separate processing plants for oxide and sulphide ores. The oxide plant processed oxide ore bearing gold and silver ore using cyanide leaching and Merrill Crowe processes, while the sulphide plant produced a copper concentrate using conventional flotation. Cormidom is a commendatory example how mineral processing facilities can co-exist in balance with the environment. In 2014, natural occurring copper oxide contamination with finer grained copper-zinc sulphide mineralisation was expected to dominate the sulphide ore body. In anticipation Cormidom contacted the original plant designer Met-Chem to assist in overcoming this challenge. Test work indicated that increased flotation time and subsequent very fine grinding were required. Met-Chem provided the detailed engineering and Cormidom proceeded with the expansion project internally. Currently Cormidom has processed the sulphide ore successfully by implementing flotation modifications. This paper describes the history of Cormidom, test work on the “new” ore body, modification in process design in the Cu-Zn sulphide flotation circuit, construction and implementation.INTRODUCTIONCorporación Minera Dominicana (CORMIDOM) was a wholly owned subsidiary of GlobeStar Mining Corporation (a Canadian based minerals exploration company) with extensive exploration of base and precious metals in the Dominican Republic. In 2007-2008 CORMIDOM constructed the Cerro de Maimom project. The company was subsequently sold and purchased by Perilya Limited from Australia in 2013. Cerro de Maimón is located in the Dominican Republic on the island of Hispaniola approximately 75 kilometers northwest of the capital city, Santo Domingo. It is near the town of Maimón in Monsenor, Nouel Province (see Figure 1)."

The Critical Path Method is the modern scientific answer for solving the planning and scheduling problems inherent in today's complex projects. With this method, nothing is left to chance. All resources are controlled and kept to the minimum. The various phases are properly planned and strategically determined. The method must be fully understood and implemented with positive data and continuous feedback to obtain the best results. "The successful marketing of Alberta coals will increasingly depend, to a large degree, on an extensive coal quality information base. This information, at present, is generally based on a deliverable, cleaned coaland is confined to existing mine sites. Coal quality information is not as well understood for raw in situ coal outside of mine sites and even less is known about the geological factors that control it.If new uses and markets for Alberta coal are to be developed, such as gasification, coprocessing, and exploiting high rank coals for combustion, it will be imperative that the coal quality parameters important for these utilizations be known. These parameters need to be known for existing deliverable coals and, just as important, for as yet unexploited in situ coal. Factors such as the Cl, No, K, Co, P and trace element contents should be addressed to meet the requirements of these new utilizations.The geological characterization and explanation of what factors control these coal quality parameters is part of research being done at the Alberta Geological Survey. In-seam vertical profiling has been undertaken within the plains and foothills/mountains coals to determine exactly where coal quality variations occur and why. In the Ardley coal zone at the Highvale Mine it has been found, for example, that the ash content of the mined coal is made up of discrete partings and of microsized particles associated with inertinite macerals. The in-seam characterization of coal seams will lead to a better understanding of in situ coal quality variations, leading to new uses and markets for Alberta coal."

"This paper investigates why it is critical for a mine to accurately determine thermal rock properties and virgin rock temperatures. Theoretical simulations of deep mining production zones have demonstrated that thermal conductivity (k), virgin rock temperatures and specific heat (cp) significantly impact rock heat predictions which can be the dominant component of a mine’s heat load. Natural variability in these factors showed that realistic errors can have a significant effect on mine heat loads. This can ultimately affect miner safety and introduces risk to the viability and sustainability of a project. INTRODUCTION Accurate heat load determinations are critical to ensure that underground working conditions are maintained within legislated and mine specific parameters to safeguard the safety and productivity of employees. Underpredicting mine heat loads will result in hot underground conditions, which risk the health and safety of employees, reduce the productivity of employees or stop production if legislated temperatures in working areas are exceeded. Overestimating mine heat loads will result in increased capital and operating costs reducing the viability of the project. Over- or under- predicting the heat load for a project will increase the project risk. Heat sources in a mine can broadly be broken into two categories. These two categories are defined by Hemp and Rawlins (2014) as natural and artificial heat sources. Those sources which depend on the size, location and depth of the mining areas are defined as natural heat sources, whereas those heat sources which are a result of the actual mining activities are defined as artificial heat sources. Autocompression, or the conversion of potential energy, to enthalpy is an important consideration when determining the air temperature in the mine and its interaction with natural and artificial heat sources. It is documented by Jones (1985) and Hemp and Rawlins (2014), that the heat flow from rock in deep mines can dominate other heat sources; information from BBE’s archives show that this is between 40% and 60% of the total heat load. They also point out the importance of accurately measuring both the thermal rock properties and virgin rock temperatures (VRTs) for determining and planning the ventilation and refrigeration requirements for a mine. Both of these texts cite multiple methods for calculating the heat-flux and ultimately the heat load for the different working areas in a mine. All of these methods demonstrate that the heat flux and heat load will increase proportionally with increased thermal conductivity (k), specific heat (cp) of the rock or mineral, and VRT depending the area of the mine or mining method."

Since the beginning of the 20th century, coal has been the world?s main source of primary energy. In the last few decades, consumption of coal has gradually decreased in some European countries and elsewhere due to the introduction of other energy sources. Regardless, industry continues to use solid fuels for energy production despite of their association with carbon dioxide emissions (about 7 billion Mg). For global development going forward, it is important to estimate what level of energy consumption can be expected as far into the future as the next few decades. To answer this question, specialized global institutions such as the International Energy Agency, the World Energy Council, the World Coal Institute, the U.S. Energy Information Administration, the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis, as well as oil companies (BP, Shell), conduct periodic forecasts of world energy consumption. The development of such forecasts is very complex because their reliability is influenced by many factors that are difficult to estimate, such as economic development, population growth, climate change, and public awareness. We are all aware that the global demand for electricity will rise significantly in the coming years as a result of anticipated population growth, industrial development, rising living standards, and the general development of civilization. The world?s mineable resources in 2010 were as follows: coal 665.6 million Mg, brown coal 195.4 billion Mg, oil 163 million Mg, and natural gas 185.5 billion m3. The annual global primary energy demand in 2008 was more than 12 billion toe (12,267 Mtoe). In 2006, electricity production in the world amounted to 18,921 TW?h. The structure of the primary energy mix in TW?h (2006) was as follows: coal 41.0%; natural gas 20.1%; nuclear fuel 14.8%; hydro energy 16.0%; liquid fuels 5.8%; and other renewable energy sources 2.3%. The European Union (EU) is one of the largest coal consumers in the world. In 2010, the EU-27 produced 396.1 million Mg of brown coal, and 132.9 million Mg of hard coal; 188 million Mg of coal was imported from outside the EU. The largest hard coal producers in the EU-27 are Poland, Great Britain, Germany, the Czech Republic, and Spain; major brown coal producers are Germany, Greece, Poland, the Czech Republic, and Hungary. For many years, the Polish energy sector has been based on domestic fuel sources ? hard coal and brown coal. The characteristic feature of the Polish balance of primary energy resources is a very high share of coal ? much higher than the world average. Pursuing the decarbonisation of the Polish economy may jeopardize Poland?s energy security, leading to a significant increase in electricity prices, which would hamper the country?s economic development. Price volatility and supply uncertainty are now the dominant features of the international markets for oil and natural gas. The high share of these fuels in meeting energy needs is the reason for unrest in many countries, including those in the EU. Under these circumstances, coal may become the stabilizing element of EU energy security.

The purpose of this paper is to analyze detailed crushing and screening configurations and the interrelationship as they relate to mass flow balance, operating efficiency, plant availability and final production. The entropy of ore bodies limits the standardization of crushing and screening plants, however, consideration for a continuous and sensible assessment of the mass flow balance of the circuit will yield the best achievable results. Since energy costs have continuously risen in the last few years, it is imperative that these circuits offer low power requirements and low operating expenses. The paper will detail how the efficient implementation of continuous mass flow balance in the application of crushing and screening plants will generate quality improvement and process improvement, which will translate into bigger production and energy savings.

"Compressed air still remains an essential source of power in underground hardrock mining. As a power medium it has a high convenience factor, although, in many cases, it is expensive to generate and maintain. Until new methods of breaking rock and/ or satisfactory alternatives to air-driven rock drills are developed, compressed air is indispensable. It is essential to utilize this source of power to a maximum by keeping all pneumatic tools supplied with air in adequate quantity and at optimum pressure.In search of the optimum operating air pressure, con-trolled drilling tests were undertaken at dynamic pressures ranging from 90 to 140 psi.Test results show the effect of increasing air pressure on: the performance of various jackleg drills at varying pressures, the life cost of drill steels and TC bits, and drilling efficiency at varying pressures. From the fore-going, a criterion is proposed for selecting efficient rock drills, and, also, optimum air pressure at each mine can be determined for its particular conditions."

The ISO TC 226 (Materials for the production of primary aluminium) has presently issued more than one hundred standards on the materials: alumina, pitch, petroleum coke, carbon anodes, carbon cathodes, ramming paste, fluorides and refractory). The object of the standardization work is to find methods that both material producers and smelters will accept. Methods that are specific for the operational conditions have been developed in addition to more traditional room temperature methods. Examples of important properties under operational conditions are: Air and C02 reactivity of anodes, Equivalent temperature for baked anodes, Sodium expansion of cathode blocks, Shrinkage and Rammability of paste, Penetration of electrolyte into refractories.

The general trend in the minerals industry is towards the processing of fine grained, disseminated mineral deposits. This has led to an increase in the number of fine/ultra-fine grinding installations using stirred media mills. The challenge is that both the equipment type and the mineralogy of the deposit have an effect on specific energy consumption. Fresnillo PLC recognized this issue and addressed it by providing samples for testing in a laboratory regrind system. The objective of the test program was to determine the specific energy required to achieve a product size of 10 µm (P80). A specific energy plot was generated for both a lead and zinc flotation concentrate. It indicated that 34 kWh/t and 51 kWh/t were required for the two samples (Pb and Zn respectively). This difference highlights the effect of mineralogy on the energy required for fine grinding. The regrind feed and products were submitted to a range of basic mineralogy tests to quantify the mineral differences that could have changed the specific energy requirements. These tests provided general mineralogy, documented optical textures, and provided particle size microscopy. The lead concentrate was found to contain significant amounts of silicates in addition to the dominant sulphide, pyrite. The zinc concentrate was determined to be mostly sphalerite with minor amounts of quartz, chalcopyrite, pyrite and galena. The material testing results illustrate the importance of basic mineralogy studies in conjunction with comminution testing to determine specific energy consumption.

Virtually all new technologies require a control system. Any intense process has many process variables that react quickly making manual control difficult. Control system design has a significant impact on the success of a plant especially during ramp-up. New technology projects are particularly sensitive to control system design as the process response is unknown. This paper discusses the important factors encountered in the design of a control system for a new technology. Examples are given of successful new technology plant start-ups where tight coordination of the process control system implementation, process design and selection major equipment led to rapid ramp-ups.

"An accurate knowledge of the chemical, mineralogical and physical characteristics of ores and mineral products that are mined, processed and sold commercially is crucial to resource definition, effective resource utilisation, plant design, process control, metallurgical accounting and finally quality control to ensure that contract specifications are met and equitable payment is received for product sales. However, the responsibility for sampling is often entrusted to personnel who do not fully appreciate the significance and importance of collecting fully representative samples for analysis, and they seem satisfied as long as some material is collected and returned to the laboratory for analysis. Furthermore, sample stations incorporated into the design of new plants are often the first casualties when cost cutting exercises commence. There is really little point in accurately analysing samples if they are not representative in the first place, because the resultant analyses can be seriously biased and the effort taken to carefully analyse such samples is largely a waste of time and resources.Ultimately, a poor knowledge of the characteristics of ores and mineral products limits the ability of mining companies to optimise the life of ore resources and plant performance, and failure to meet final product specifications can have disastrous consequences, including price penalties and more seriously loss of sales contracts and significant revenue losses due to poor sampling practices at the point of sale. Consequently, it is critical that sampling is given the attention it deserves as the first important step in the quality measurement chain. The golden rule for correct sampling is that all parts of the ore, concentrate, slurry or other material being sampled must have an equal opportunity of being collected and becoming part of the final sample for analysis."

Air heating of the intake shaft should ensure safe operation of hoisting devices; while at the same time it also affects the conditions of the mine environment. The importance of structural geology in open pit slope stability is overlooked in many mining operations due to pressures to cut costs and minimize mine personnel. As a result, mine geology staff are often unable to keep up with geological mapping of the pit slopes due to other day to day production oriented tasks. In some instances, key structural controls that contribute to slope instability may not be identified until after a slope instability has initiated, at which time it may be difficult or impossible to delineate these features in the field. Even for small slopes, understanding the engineering and structural geology of the rock mass, as well as the effects of groundwater and blasting practices, are of key importance to slope stability. Two case histories are presented as examples of mining operations that experienced slope instability with little more than anecdotal information about the structural and groundwater conditions encountered during mining. By conducting field reconnaissance, simple slope stability analyses and ongoing slope monitoring, practical remedial measures were implemented, allowing continued safe mining operation.

Subsurface water data can be very valuable in .petroleum exploration and research. For the discussion of problems related to subsurface waters uniform nomenclature and classifications are required. The term 'connate water' has frequently been incorrectly used. It should .only be used in its original sense in which it is analagous to 'fossil water'. Classifications .based on origin and on sodium-chloride content are proposed. Present and possible uses of formation water analyses are briefly discussed. Since the potential uses of formation water data are not fully understood, complete analyses of selected samples should be made to insure against future requirements. The subsurface waters of Alberta show considerable regional variation in amount and proportion of dissolved salts.

IN a recent paper on Roasting of Beattie Concentrate (1), the importance of controlling the temperature, and the sulphur dioxide concentration was pointed out. It is the purpose of the present paper to present further information by which the most satisfactory conditions for roasting are more specifically defined. Incidentally, a method of illustration is developed for representing roasting curves on a three-dimensional diagram. The primary purpose of this investigation, as in the case of the earlier work, was the search for information that would be of practical value in improving plant operation and gold recovery. For this reason, emphasis is laid on the regulation of essential variables and on definition of their optimum values and limits for maximum gold recovery in the subsequent cyanidation process. Good roasting is considered at least as much an art as it is a science, and, in this light, theoretical consideration of the nature and sequence of the chemical reactions involved is of secondary importance. The presentation which follows includes a series of graphical illustrations, an interpretation of the graphs, some theoretical considerations, and a description of laboratory technique.

"The Functional Performance Equation for ball milling circuits allows us to isolate the circuit classification system efficiency (CSE) from the mill’s grinding performance. The factors which affect circuit CSE are reviewed, with emphasis on water usage at the classifiers. It is shown that manipulation of such water usage can be carried out to improve plant grinding circuit efficiency, at times by more than 30 percent.THE FUNCTIONAL PERFORMANCE EQUATIONObservation of the feed and product size distributions going into and discharging from the mill in grinding circuits with low versus high circulating load ratios initially led to the definition of “circuit classification system efficiency” (or CSE, McIvor, 1988a), and ultimately the discovery of the Functional Performance Equation (McIvor, 1988b, and McIvor et al, 1992). The CSE is the percentage of “coarse” (typically with reference to the plus P80) size material occupying the mill (versus “fines” or product size material, finer than the circuit P80), and can be calculated by taking the average of the percentage of coarse material in the mill feed and mill discharge. As this also represents the percentage of the mill energy expended on targeted, coarse size material, it is directly proportional to overall grinding circuit efficiency and production rate. This is all clearly expressed in the Functional Performance Equation for ball milling circuits, which is derived as follows.We define “fines” as any product size material, and “coarse” as that targeted to be further ground, the two typically differentiated by the circuit target P80. For any grinding circuit, the production rate of new, product size material (fines) must equal the specific grinding rate of the coarse material (i.e. fine product generated per unit of energy applied to the coarse material) times the power applied to the coarse material."
