"Although lead, zinc, copper, and iron sulphides have been known for many years in the Bathurst region, the existence of large massive deposits was not known until the discovery of the Brunswick orebody in 1952. This was followed by the discoveries of the Anacon orebody in 1953 and the American Metals orebodies in 1954. There is no question as to the great importance of these large massive sulphide deposits, and no doubt that other sulphide deposits are to be found. The problem, of course, is where and how to find them.The discovery of the Brunswick and Anacon orebodies is attributed to geophysical work. The original discovery of the American Metals deposit is generally attributed to a regional airborne electromagnetic survey.It is generally stated that the Bathurst area is a geophysical camp, and this is essentially true, but in this highly competitive search for orebodies it is obviously impossible for an individual company to cover the entire area by a comprehensive geophysical survey. Some means other than geophysics must be used to narrow the target. The quickest, cheapest, and simplest method is geological investigations.It has been stated that nothing can be accomplished by geology in the Bathurst region, since the camp is largely covered with overburden. This is true only insofar as detailed work on certain properties is concerned. It is not true of the larger regional picture. Outcrops are scarce, but angular float is abundant, and precedent shows that angular float has moved but a short distance from its source.GeologyAeromagnetic maps published by the Department of Mines and Technical Surveys are the best guides to the geology and structure of the area. These maps supply factual information concerning the underlying rocks. When coupled with field investigations, they are very useful in the interpretation of regional geology and the selection of favourable areas. The discussion of the geology is accordingly centred upon the aeromagnetic maps. The following is essentially a working theory, based on geological facts as best reconciled with all other available information,"

"For the purpose of this paper, the Chibougamau area is taken as lying between lats. 49°20’ and 50°10’ N;-longs. 73°45’ and 75°30’ W. It comprises an area of some 4,000 square miles and is centred 300 miles north of Montreal.The first recorded report of metal deposits in Chibougamau was that of James Richardson in 1870-71 (I). In 1903 discoveries of asbestos, copper, iron, and gold made by Peter McKenzie stimulated considerable activity in the district. By 1909 interest had become so marked that considerable pressure was brought to bear on the Quebec Government to build a rail-way into the region. It was finally decided to have an authoritative opinion on its economic possibilities, and the Chibougamau Commission was appointed for this purpose (2). They examined the district in 1910 and concluded that at that time a railway was not warranted. Nevertheless, the district continued to be prospected and from time to· time gold and copper discoveries were made. Thus the Merrill Island deposit was discovered in 1920, the Campbell Chibougamau Cedar Bay deposit in 1922, Obalski in 1928, Opemiska Copper in 1929, and Norbeau in 1930.Difficulty of transportation was a severe detriment to the development of the region. Consequently the Quebec Department of Mines completed a road into Chibougamau in 1949. Further activity was encouraged. The Chibougamau Explorers, Quebec Chibougamau Goldfields, and Kayrand deposits were found in 1950. ** The copper-siderite zones on Copper Cliff ground were found in 1952 and 1953. Opemiska Copper, Campbell Chibougamau Mines, and Chibougamau Explorers were encouraged to prepare for production following favourable exploration results."

"The Part of the Eastern Townships dealt with in this paper is shown in the accompanying figure. Each rectangle represents one of the topographic maps published by the Department of National Defence on a scale of one mile to one inch. Each sheet covers an area approximately 24 miles long and 17 miles wide, or slightly more than 400 square miles. The north-western part of the area figured, comprising the Upton, Aston, Becancour, and the two unnamed sheets, (Three Rivers and Yamaska), together with most of the Lyster, Drummondville, and St. Hyacinthe sheets, is largely covered by clays and sands deposited in interglacial and post-glacial time in the Champlain estuary, so that outcrops are widely scattered and in-formation is correspondingly sketchy. In the remainder of the area figured, comprising more than 4,000 square miles, outcrops are reasonably numerous and have been mapped on a scale of one mile to one inch, and the structure is moderately well understood.The Eastern Townships was an area of intense orogenic disturbance, apparently beginning late in the Cambrian or early in the Ordovician, and continuing till well on in the Devonian period. During this long period, which may have lasted for a hundred million years or more, the area was subjected from time to time to intense thrusts from the east and southeast. Each of these caused folding of the rocks, accompanied by faulting, raised parts of the area above sea-level, and presumably created ranges of mountains. Long periods of erosion cut away the mountains and reduced the area nearly to sea-level after which subsidence carried it below sea-level, and permitted further sediments to accumulate before the next thrust initiated the next cycle.The first of these movements, as stated, appears to have been in late Cambrian or early Ordovician time. The group of rocks known as Caldwell was folded and, south and east of the town of Asbestos, was thrown into great drag-folds before deposition of the next overlying series, termed the Beauceville, began. Unfortunately, the date of this orogeny is very imperfectly known, because both series of rocks have been so crushed and sheared that almost all fossil remains have been destroyed. Graptolites, found in one place in slates generally considered Beauceville, give that series a tentative Middle Ordovician age. In the Caldwell rocks, which underlie the Beauceville with great unconformity, no fossils whatever have yet been found. Thus, if the Beauceville rocks are correctly dated as mid-Ordovician, the best that can be said of the movement folding the Caldwell is that it took place at some time before Middle Ordovician."

"The Ferderber gold deposit is of Archean age. It consists of a series of gold-bearing quartz lenses within a shear zone that crosscuts the central part of the quartz dioritic Bourlamaque batholith. On average, this zone strikes N70E and dips 65SE. The Ferderber shear zone, which hosts the ore lenses, has been affected by a succession of tectonic events. A possible early period of brittle shear, accompanied by the formation of quartz lenses, resulted from strike slip movement along the zone. These early quartz veins were subsequently folded and boudinaged during reverse movement that accompanied a prolonged period of ductile shear. More quartz veins were emplaced in the shear zone at this time; these were also deformed by the thrusting. The latest tectonic event to affect the shear zone was a period of brittle fracture.Early dextral strike-slip movement on the shear zone is suggested by the local occurrence of Riedel shears, the preferred association of ore with east-northeast oriented segments of the zone, and by the apparent en echelon arrangement of some ore lenses. The most important event, a reverse movement, is indicatedby the attitudesoffoliation, folds, boudins, COS tectonites and slip planes. The late brittle fracturing formed narrow gouge filled faults, locally flanked by brecciazones, whichrun generally within and parallel to the shear zone, and also conjugate fractures that crosscut the zone.The Ferderber and six other adjacent gold deposits were formed in a structural regime dominated by a generally horizontal north-south regional compression. The Y axis of the strain ellipsoid is east-west and varies from horizontal to a plunge of 25 0 w."

"IntroductionThe Yellowknife greenstone belt lies along the west side of Yellowknife bay on the north shore of Great Slave lake, some 600 miles north of Edmonton, Alberta. The producing gold mines along the belt include the Con-Rycon and Negus which came into production in 1938 and 1939, and the Giant Yellowknife, which followed in 1948. In addition to these, the Akaitcho and Crestaurum mines are potential producers and there are several promising prospects.Early geological work along the belt was done by A. W. Jolliffe who first recognized a number of great faults, the largest of which is the West Bay fault with a horizontal movement of more than 3 miles. In 1943, A. S. Dadson, following an examination of the Giant-Yellowknife property, advanced the hypothesis that Baker Creek valley was underlain by a series of major gold-bearing shear zones. Subsequent diamond drilling in 1944 bore out the correctness of this view and outlined the great ore-bearing shear zones that are now being developed and mined by Giant Yellowknife Gold Mines. Near the south boundary of the Giant property, the shear zones are cut off by the West Bay fault. This prompted Neil Campbell, District Geologist for the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company, to make a detailed study of the geology along the West Bay fault in the hope of finding the faulted extension of the Giant shear-zone system on the west side of this fault. In this he was entirely successful. By careful geological mapping he matched several faulted diabase dykes on both sides of the fault and, knowing their dip, determined the horizontal and vertical components of movement along the fault. Subsequent •diamond drilling based on Campbell's work located the presumed correlative of the Giant shear-zone system on the Con-Rycon and Negus properties, where it has been named the Campbell zone or system. At the present time, all production at the Negus Mines property is coming from orebodies along the Campbell zone."

The no. 7 vein system cuts the Ventures gabbro which has undergone folding and fracturing; the latter, in response to movement on the nearby Campbell Lake fault. It fills a shear fracture which pinches and swells in the upper mine levels but has a more uniform width in the lower levels. The best copper and gold grades in the upper levels occur in the widest parts of this structure. The vein is richer in quartz on upper mine levels and in carbonate on lower levels. The north wall of the vein is more affected by major and minor element wallrock alteration than the south wall. The isocumulative ci;rves for gold and copper show a direct correlation between the two metals in the upper levels and their increased concentration in the wider parts of the vein. Gold grade decreases in lower levels. A proposed structural model identifies the no. 3 and no. 7 veins as second order conjugate fractures, related to the Campbell Lake fault. The fractures pattern suggests that a conjugate system developed between these two parallel veins as a consequence of rock competence and a relatively low confining pressure.

"The Detour Lake gold deposit is located within the northwestern limit of the Archean Abitibi Subprovince of the Superior Province. Mineralized zones are hosted by a sequence of pillowed and massive flows, hyaloclastite units, and altered ultramafic rocks, and are commonly oriented parallel to a series of high-strain zones that are co-planar to the regional-scale Sunday Lake Deformation Zone. Early in its kinematic history, the Sunday Lake Deformation Zone placed older (2.72 Ga) volcanic rocks of the Detour Lake Formation over younger (2.70 Ga) sedimentary rocks of the Caopatina assemblage. Gold mineralization is also parallel to the position of a laterally persistent siliceous rock unit, the 2.725 Ga ‘Chert Marker Horizon.’ The Chert Marker Horizon coincides with the boundary between the mafic-dominated upper Detour Lake Formation and the ultramafic-dominated lower Detour Lake Formation. Stratigraphic and geochronological data suggest that the Chert Marker Horizon is a deformed felsic volcaniclastic unit. At a cut-off of 0.6 g/t Au, the Detour Lake deposit contains 17.26 million ounces of Au within 445.9 million tonnes of rock grading 1.20 g/t Au. Gold occurs in shear-hosted and extensional vein arrays within rocks of the upper and lower Detour Lake Formation and within the Chert Marker Horizon. The Detour Lake deposit has many of the characteristics of a greenstone-hosted, quartz-carbonate vein deposit; its very large size may be attributed to large-scale rheological controls resulting in the formation of dilatant sites in permissive rock units."

Mine design, planning and scheduling is a very complex, iterative process comprising several interrelated and interdependent activities. Understanding how this process works, identifying the critical pieces of information and the decisions to be made is key to initiating business process improvements (BPI) or business process reengineering (BPR) activities. Fundamental to most BPI and BPR work is some form of systems analysis. Structured Analysis is a powerful systems analysis technique that is well suited for modeling and analyzing complex process activities. Through a series of diagrams, this paper presents a vertical slice through the analysis work performed for formally describing the underground hardrock mine design and planning process. These diagrams illustrate how simple graphic constructs can be used to decompose the most complex situations into easily understandable diagrams that facilitate understanding, communication, improvement and reengineering.

"This paper focusses on what seem to be the leading indicators of prosperity in the minerals industry during this decade: the geographical distribution of deposits, environmental impact, capital allocation and acid consumption. There is a potential for meeting environmental criteria at a reasonable profit margin, but those with limited acid demand within economic range will face hard times to meet growing environmental concerns, resulting in additional mine closures. At the other end, those with old waste dumps who are thinking about smelting capacity additions will need capital influx at a much larger rate than ever before. All things considered, a change should be made in the way the world's copper reserves are computed, because there is a growing need to internalize these effects back to the ore blocks before a meaningful estimate of reserves becomes available.IntroductionThe copper industry has undergone several changes during the past decade, many of which were expected to take place because they rel1ect the economics of ageing mines. However, many others took place that shocked the industry because they were not completely under control. The focus of this paper is to rel1ect on those changes, and on market expectations for this decade that somehow depend on their impact.To review the prospects for new mine developments and expansions from an industry perspective to a full extent, it would be necessary to consider not only the deposits themselves, but also geographical constraints, environmental constraints, labour composition, technology development and use, the availability of capital, ownership issues, and integration within the industry. This paper, however, will concentrate on only some of the key elements that are believed to playa major role in shaping the market in the decade that has just begun. Brownfield project portfolios are notoriously hard to manage. Day to day there is a constant stream of changes and challenges within projects and across the whole program. When the budget year is over, we?re often left wondering: did the facilities get what they really needed? Did we get value for the capital that was spent? Did we get all the project control and process improvement that we paid for? Great work has been done over the years by the Project Management Institute, Construction Industry Institute and Independent Project Analysis to identify what leads to project success, develop project delivery systems and equip project leaders to perform better. But is attention to individual projects all we need when the job is to deliver a portfolio of many projects? Let?s work with an analogy for a moment, and say a project is like a car, and a project manager the driver. Why can?t all the projects in the portfolio get home in time for dinner? The answer, of course, is that the commute home is about traffic, not just about cars. The road, the signals and the actions of other drivers affect us in our individual cars. Optimizing traffic flow is not about managing individual cars, it is about creating the conditions that allow all traffic to move as smoothly as possible. When we?re stuck in traffic, it doesn?t really matter that we are skilled drivers who know our exact location and our engine?s vital signs. Success with a brownfield portfolio requires more than the equivalent of driver training and a good GPS in every vehicle. Managing the annual budget requires more than tight management of each project. This is not a suggestion to abandon project management in the brownfield multi-projects world; the idea is to find and apply the right tools for delivering a portfolio. Remember, we want confidence in 3 areas: 1. that the facility is getting what it really needs, when it needs it 2. that we are getting value for money invested in facility modifications and improvements, and 3. that our controls are adding value by guiding our improvement What are those portfolio tools? The job they have to do is distinct from project-level thinking: ? Create a clear and balanced business pull for project ideas ? Maintain a respectable plan for fiscal, resource and business control ? Organize the work into a steady flow ? Manage the nature and timing of value-driven project substitutions and priority changes ? Focus on overall business value added and best use of resources ? Repurpose the projects organization into being the way the facility gets improved

"IntroductionTHE GOLDFIELDS AREA in northern Saskatchewan has be-come important in recent years because of numerous discoveries of pitchblende. The area is underlain by rocks of Precambrian age and, because of metamorphism and hydrothermal alteration, the geology in the vicinity of the pitchblende deposits is exceedingly complex and presents a challenge to all geologists •working in the district. This paper is a contribution to the geological literature of the area and presents a description of rock types, supplemented with petrographic, chemical, and spectrochemical data.Field work in connection with this paper was carried out during the summers of 1948, 1949, and 1950 while the writer was employed as assistant geologist for the Crown Corporation, Eldorado Mining and Refining ( 1944), Limited, Gold-fields area. Laboratory work was undertaken at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology during the winter months of 1949-50 and 1950-51 and extended through the summer of 1951.With the exception of SiO2and FeO, all of the new analyses ( 1) presented were carried out by quantitative spectrographic techniques under the supervision of Dr. L. H. Ahrens at M.I.T. Many of the techniques have only recently been developed at that Institute and detailed laboratory procedures have not yet been published."

Strips of AA6111 automotive alloy were cast on a horizontal single belt strip casting simulator, Pure copper and carbon steels substrates plasma sprayed with different coatings for improving the strip surface quality, were used as chill moulds, Experimental studies revealed that a graphite coating provided the greatest benefit in achieving good surface quality. The interfacial heat fluxes during solidification of AA6111 strip were calculated by the IHCP method (Inverse Heat Conduction Problem). Temperature variations and cooling rates within the strips were then calculated through numerical simulations based on the time-dependent heat fluxes obtained by IHCP, The effects of casting parameters, including casting temperature and strip thickness, on interfacial heat fluxes, cooling rates and microstructures, were investigated, Although the maximum interfacial heat fluxes on the chill copper substrate were much higher than the results obtained from the steel substrates, the solidification times of the melts were mainly determined by strip thickness. Very fine equi-axed grains were obtained for both 1.2mm and 2.5mm thick strips thanks to the rapid extraction of heat, and effective grain refinement.

"Superhydrophobic thin films were fabricated on aluminum alloy substrates by chemical etching followed by passivation with organic acid molecules; (ii) electrophoretic deposition (EPD) of functionalized ZnO nanoparticles and (iii) electrodeposition of organic-inorganic composite materials. The physical and compositional analyses of the deposited thin films were characterized by SEM, FTIR, XRD as well as contact angle goniometer. The contact angle and surface roughness of the superhydrophobic surfaces prepared by the chemical etching process were found to be 156° and 2.29 µm, (ii) by the EPD process were found to be 155° and 4.54 µm and (iii) by the electrodeposition process were found to be 159° and 7.11 µm, respectively.The corrosion properties were analyzed with both polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) in NaCl aqueous solutions. The results demonstrate that the superhydrophobic thin films on aluminum alloy substrates display better anti-corrosion behavior than the as-received aluminum substrate. The comparison of results pertaining to the compositional and corrosion properties of these thin films on aluminum will be discussed in this work.INTRODUCTIONSuperhydrophobicity is defined as a surface property which provides non-wetting characteristics with a water contact angle larger than 150°. It is observed that the creation of certain micro-nanoroughness structures promotes the entrapment of air in the spaces of the rough surface morphology. In addition, lowering the surface energy helps to reduce the affinity of water drops to the surface, thereby weakening the water-surface interaction. Recently, various fabrication methods for superhydrophobic surfaces have been explored (Sarkar, 2010, Huang, 2010, 2011, 2013, 2015a, 2015b), such as the sol-gel process (Brassard, 2011), plasma treatment (Marchand, 2013), chemical vapor deposition (Zheng, 2009), chemical etching (Saleema, 2011), electrodeposition (Ying, 2011) and electrophoretic deposition (EPD; Huang et al., 2015b)."

"The gas sorption and emission characteristic of coals are important to the planning and conduct of mining operations. Methane drainage from coal strata can also provide a supply of fuel in certain circumstances. Gas emissions have also created hazards during the handling and transport of coals and the release of gas also appears to be related to the yield of fine sizes during mining and processing operations.This paper summarizes studies at the University of Alberta on the permeability and gas emission of certain bituminous coals. Permeability of 'solid' samples was found to be drastically reduced by confining pressure. An emission index, .P, which has been related to outbursting behaviour of coals, has also been related to the proportion of fine s in cleaning plants. Gas sorption isotherms are dependent on temperature, moisture content, the gas involved and the type of coal and can be approximately expressed by the Langmuir or the Freundlich equations. Sorption values in sections taken across a given seam were similar but considerable differences were found in . P indices in the different coal layers of a seam.IntroductionThe emission of gases, especially of methane, from coal has been a subject of great interest (and sometimes a matter of life and death), to those who dig and handle coal since it was first mined from underground pit s. Many studies and investigations have been carried out on gas occurrences and emissions but our knowledge of the precise mechanisms of gas sorption, desorption and flow from coal is still incomplete. We report the studies of Proton-Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells (PEM FC) and hydrogen storage materials at McMaster University for the last 14 years. From the initial investigation of ionic conduction mechanism to the revelation of the origin of non-Arrhenius temperature dependence, as well as the synthesis and characterization of high temperature polymer electrolytes, both experimental and theoretical works have been compiled for the fuel cell membranes. In addition to the discovery of suppressed ionic conduction in Electrode-Membrane Assembly (EMA) and novel hydrocarbon PEMs based on micro-emulsion, the first evidence of hydrogen adsorption saturation by carbon nano-tubes was also achieved, which has been the bottleneck for the application of PEM FC. Prior to our study, a number of controversial publications have claimed the hydrogen capacity of these materials to be between 0.1 to 10.0 wt.%, and none demonstrated a plateau of adsorption with pressure that is consistent with monolayer saturation. Others suggested that the tube bundle structure is opened under high pressure to enable higher adsorption on newly uncovered surfaces, but received no confirmation. Using our home made high-pressure instrument with in-situ electrical probes, we found that a plateau is nearly achieved at about 300 atm in the room temperature isotherm, and that nanotube bundles actually compress with pressure instead of splitting, using in-situ electrical measurements.

"Dust size distribution and aerosol size distribution measurements have been carried out in several Canadian underground uranium mines. In addition, dust samples have been analyzed for long-lived radioactive products of the U-238 and Th-232 natural decay chains using ex-spectroscopy and -y-spectroscopy techniques.From the data collected one may summarize: (a) most airborne particulates are of size below I u-m and 50% by mass are found above 1 u-m; (b) dust clouds are bimodal; (c) preferential deposition of radon (thoron) daughters takes place on airborne particulates in the sub -micron range at about 0.1 u-m; (d) deposition of radon (thoron) daughters is proportional to particle surface area; and (e) ex-spectroscopy and -y-spectroscopy of dust samples reveals the presence of U-238, Ra-226 and some of their short-lived and long-lived decay products.IntroductionExtended inhalation of airborne radioisotopes poses a potential health problem to occupational workers. Because of this, monitoring of radiation and dust levels for dose exposure calculation purposes is not only recommended but in most cases mandatory.CANMET (Energy, Mines a nd Resources Canada) has long since been engaged in a comprehensive monitoring program aimed at determining dust concentrations in the respirable size range, aerosol concentration in the sub-micron range, and in the radioactivity associated with these particulates in underground uranium mines. Measurements have been carried-out with gravimetric dust samplers, dust size selectors (including a horizontal elutriator , a fineparticle spectrometer and Nuclepore* filters of different pore sizes) and a condensation nucleus counter(1 – 6). Inactive and active working sites have been monitored according to some typical mining operations. A summary of these data has been given elsewhere(3- 5)."

The paper describes an investigation of some of the tensile properties of single crystal vanadium, poly-crystalline vanadium and polycrystal-line tantalum, in the range of: W°C to -196°C. Techniques employed in the preparation and testing of specimens are discussed in detail. Some results of determinations of the temperature dependence of yield stress and ductility are given, and discussed in terms of the Cottrell-Bilby Theory of yielding. At subnormal temperatures, all the body-centred cubic transition metals in the Periodic Table exhibit; a) the "yield phenomenon" in tension, b) a strong temperature and strain rate dependence of yield stress, and c) a large decrease or complete loss of ductility. The yield phenomenon (existence of an upper and lower yield point) has been explained by Cottrell and Bilby ( 1) in terms of the dislocation-locking effect

The aim of this paper is to show the results of the study that relate the variations of the bismuth content in the Caraíba Metais' electrolytic copper with the main electrolysis' process variables as electrolyte flow rate and temperature, anode's impurities content, electrolyte composition, current density, etc and their combinations and factors like cathode washing, blend of materials entering rod plant's furnace, analytical methods, shot-circuit inspection, etc. Also, the methodology considered arsenic, bismuth and antimony mass balance in the electrolysis and their electrolyte's molar ratio relations as well as bibliographic references of refineries that operate in similar conditions. The results showed the circumstances with the major probability of causing bismuth content increasing in the electrolytic copper and the main operating conditions that have to be fixed for having less bismuth variation and lower content in the electrolytic copper.
