The Goodyear nickel prospect is located 45 km southeast of Kalgoorlie (31.04¦S, 121.80¦E) near the eastern boundary of Hampton Area - East Location 45 (Figure 1). Nickel mineralisation was discovered on the Goodyear prospect in March 1996 when a reverse circulation drillhole (GYC5), initially drilled in December 1995, was deepened to meet a minimum footwall penetration requirement of 20 in that had been set for the drill program. Approximately 3 in of sulphides averaging 4.9 per cent nickel was intersected from 296 metres down-hole, this being within 2 in of the first end-of-hole. Hole GYC5 was part of an eight hole drilling program undertaken by Titan Resources in late-1995. This program was designed to test whether nickel mineralisation in the Dunlop prospect, discovered by the Western Mining Corporation - BHP Camylia Joint Venture immediately east of the East Location 45 boundary, continued across the tenement boundary. The area targeted by the initial drill program had been explored by Western Mining Corporation in the mid-1980s using extensive surface sampling and a drilling program that included 17 RAB and percussion drillholes. None of these holes intersected nickel Mineralisation.\

The Gosowong epithermal Au-Ag deposits, located on the island of Halmahera, North Maluku Province, Indonesia, are owned and operated by PT Nusa Halmahera Minerals, a joint venture between Newcrest Mining Limited (75 per cent) and PT Aneka Tambang Tbk (25 per cent).The Gosowong deposit was a greenfields discovery in 1994. Subsequent brownfields discoveries, most recently in 2009, have resulted in a total endowment of more than 6 Moz Au. The three main deposits include Gosowong, Toguraci and Kencana, and as of December 2013, production comprised 5.7 Mt Au at 24 g/t for 4.3 Moz with remaining resources of 4.2 Mt Au at 13 g/t for 1.7 Moz.Mineralisation primarily occurs in multistage veins, breccias and stockwork veins, with at least four texturally- and mineralogically-distinct vein events, including: banded crystalline quartz, quartz-adularia, quartz-chlorite and quartz-sulfide stages. Vein mode, texture and mineralogy are zoned around areas of maximum dilation, vein width and vein grade. Within banded quartz-chlorite, grades of >1000 g/t Au are common. Anomalous Au-Ag-Pb-As-Sb-K-Li geochemistry in rocks is commonly associated with the epithermal mineralisation. Four major types of hypogene alteration are recognised at Gosowong: silicification (quartz-illite-adularia-pyrite) within the immediate vein zone, argillic (illite-quartz-pyrite) alteration enveloping the vein zone, advanced argillic (dickite-kaolinite-quartz) alteration above and adjacent to the vein zone and within the overlying Kayasa Formation, and propylitic (chlorite-epidote-albite-calcite-pyrite) alteration within the footwall and distal to the vein zone.CITATION:Fitzpatrick, N, Harris, A, MacCorquodale, F and Wardiman, D, 2015. Mackenzie (1968, p. 167) inferred that amphibolitelayers grade into and may be correlated with footwall Potosi gneiss where it is thin under the thickest development of the "lead lode" in the New Broken Hill Consolidated mine, Broken Hill. This gradation from amphibolite to Potosi gneiss is tacitly assumed in many of the constructed crosssections of the southern end of the orebody, where amphibolite and Potosi gneiss, defined in hand specimen, are correlated in adjacent drill holes. The Grande Côte Mineral Sands Deposit (GCMSP) is located on a coastal mobile dune system in Senegal on the west coast of Africa. Senegal is a stable, democratic republic, having gained its independence from France in 1960. It has a population of about 12.5 million people. The dunes begin about 25 km north-east of Dakar, the capital city of Senegal, and extend northwards for more than 140 km. The mineralised dune system averages about 2 km wide with some areas extending to up to 4.5 km wide.Mineral Deposits limited (MDL), a Melbourne-based company with over 60 years operational experience in mineral sand mining in Australia, holds, through its Senegalese subsidiary MDL Senegal SARL (MDLS), a 25-year Mining Concession covering the deposits. The main heavy mineral (HM) areas identified to date are, from south to north, Mboro, Fass Boye, Diogo and Lompoul. Within the Mining Concession there is potential to identify additional resources beyond the limits of present drilling. The dunes are mobile or semi fixed, pale yellow in colour and overlie older white marine sands. The dunes range between 5 m and 30 m in height and the mineralised zones, which are essentially flat-lying, average around 15 m in thickness. The mineralisation consists, principally of ilmenite with accessory zircon, rutile and leucoxene. Zircon and ilmenite are the main commodities of interest.Independent consultants AMC estimated mineral resources for the four main deposits in 2006 of 1330 Mt of sand averaging 2.0 per cent HM at a cut-off grade of 1.5 per cent HM. At a cut-off grade of one per cent the resources were 3200 Mt averaging 1.5 per cent HM. All of the estimate was classified as Inferred Resources under the 2004 Australasian Code for Reporting of Exploration Results, Mineral Resources and Ore Reserves (JORC, 2004).Subsequent completion of infill drilling, sampling and assaying of the initial mining area, centred at Diogo, was completed in 2008, enabling a final dredge path to be designed and ore reserves estimated, based on a JORC compliant Measured and Indicated Mineral Resource. Infill drilling is continuing in the Lompoul and the results of this campaign will be included in the JORC compliant data base by AMC in April 2010 to enable the 15 per cent year dredge path and mine plan to be finalised.Development studies have shown that the project can be optimised as a dredging operation, with mineralised sand being treated in a conventional floating spiral preconcentrator, wet concentrator and dry mineral separation plant. Engineering work now substantially completed by Ausenco Limited (Ausenco) has developed the combination of some existing plant from MDL’s past operations, and new plant for the complete process from dredging to final product separation and grading. Testwork on a series of bulk samples has determined that the project can yield a high quality zircon product and an ilmenite product along with minor rutile and leucoxene.Work to date indicates a likely output of around 80 000 t of zircon in various quality streams (Primary, Secondary, Standard and Foundry Grades), around 550 000 t of ilmenite plus around 15000 t of rutile and around 12 000 t of leucoxene/secondary ilmenite. Planned zircon output would represent around 7per cent of the total world production, which would make the GCZ&IP a significant producer on a world scale.The studies have indicated capital costs to be in the range of US$400 M total operating cost (after completion of ramp-up) of around US$50 M - $55 M/a. Revenue is expected to be in the range $127 M - $157 M/a.

The Granites Gold Mine has far exceeded the design capacity of 300,000 tonne per annum during its first sixteen months of operation. The presence of considerable free coarse gold has made it imperative that the gravity section operate at maximum efficiency. The inadequacy of acid digest- ing facilities and trying climatic conditions prompted management to initi- ate investigations into the use of Intensive Cyanidation as an alternative method for upgrading gravity concentrates prior to smelting.

North Flinders Mines Limited (N.F.M.) is an Australian-owned mineral exploration and mining company based in South Australia. In the 1970's it researched the prospectiveness of the Tanami (central western region of the N.T.) for the identification of possible economic gold deposits. Having outlined the potential for such a deposit at The Granites (550 km. N.W. of Alice Springs), it marked out and in 1975 applied for the grant of eleven gold mining leases (G.M.L.'s) under the provisions of the then Mining Ordinance. This application was deferred by the Commonwealth Government during the time of the Aboriginal Land Rights Commission (Woodward), subsequent enactment of legislation and land claims. In 1980, the Walpiri and Kartangarurra-Kurintji land claim encompassing the G.M.L.'s, became Aboriginal land. It therefore became necessary for N.F.M. to negotiate a mining agreement with the Central Land Council (C.L.C.) represent- ing the Traditional Owners, before the G.M.L.'s could be granted. In August 1983, the C.L.C. and N.F.M. concluded an agreement to enable the grant of mining interests necessary for the devel- opment of The Granites Gold Project. The Great Artesian Basin (GAB) contains one of the largest reserves of fresh water in the world. The volume in storage is enormous, being estimated at nearly 65 000 million megalitres (ML). Development of this resource, dominantly for the pastoral industry, began in the late-1800s and quickly accelerated. With exploitation of the resource, artesian pressures declined almost as rapidly. This loss of head is a result of the total discharge from the basin and much of this discharge is waste of water. The waste through uncontrolled bores and inefficient distribution systems still amounts to about 75 per cent of all discharge. However, the volume in storage has hardly been depleted. The major concern is the effect of withdrawal on artesian pressures. Due to the size of the Basin, the relatively flat gradients and low permeability, the movement of water through the aquifers is extremely slow and independent of recharge. Hence, the normal concepts of sustainable yield (ie discharge should equal recharge) cannot be applied to the Basin as a whole as travel times do not allow for the effect of recharge to be seen away from the outcrop areas within management timeframes. The large volume in storage, though, can provide an extensive buffer to the impacts of temporary water needs. This effect should be considered when assessing the acceptability of fixed life projects such as mines and the extracted volumes from their operations. Identifying a sustainable yield involves balancing the acceptability of the economic, environmental and social costs with the associated discharge and fall in head, to arrive at an acceptable balance.

Oil can enter a flotation circuit from a number of sources (for example, from mining equipment, oil leaks from the grinding equipment and coatings on the grinding media, but to name a few). Folklore generally states that any oil that contaminates the ore entering the flotation circuit is considered to have a negative impact on flotation. That is, a loss in concentrate grade and recovery.This represents a dilemma for some grinding media suppliers, who use a variety of quenching medium (air, polymer, oil or water) to achieve the desired physical properties of the ball. In the case of high chrome grinding media it is necessary, in some instances, to quench in oil to give the ball the right degree of toughness, which invariably leads to these balls having a thin film of oil on their surface. Once the grinding media arrives on site and site personnel recognise that the balls are “covered” in oil, they generally insist that the oil will have a deleterious impact on flotation performance.Obviously, any supplier “worth their salt” would take remedial action at the point of manufacture to minimise this problem. However, does quenching oil actually present a significant “threat” to the flotation process? This paper provides both laboratory and plant data describing the effect quenching oil has on the flotation of copper sulphide ore, with surprising results!

IF a straight line should be drawn on the map (See 1, page 96) through the northern half of the South Island of New Zealand, from Mt. Domett in the north to Arthur's Pass in the south, and another line drawn parallel to it and at a distance of ten miles to the west, according to the topographic scale, it will be found that within the belt thus drawn across the country all the most important mines, past and present, of the South Island are situated, with the exception of a few in Otago.The most important product of this tract being gold, and Reefton, the most important southern mining field, being situated at about its central portion, the zone may aptly be termed "The Great Reefton Gold Belt." The occurrence of so many gold mines along this particular strip of country is not at all a matter of chance, but is the outcome of cause and effect. "Since the adoption of open-door policy 30 years ago, rapid economic growth has resulted in serious resource depletion and environmental destruction, especially in mining areas. As an urgent response to this situation, the central government and the Ministry of Land and Resources (MLR) have adjusted policies with concrete and realistic actions for halting this trend of non-sustainable mining activities in China. æGreen Mine CampaignÆ is one of the actions implemented. In 2010, MLR announced the æGreen Mine CampaignÆ, in which existing and new mines will be evaluated against the æGreen Mine Construction StandardsÆ and certified as æGreen MineÆ if complying with these standards. The standards cover five key aspects: the considerations of science-supported resource exploitation efficient resource utilisation standardised management environmental friendliness harmonious community relationship.Every year, MLR reviews ægreen minesÆ from all provinces. Thirty seven mines, including coal, metal, non-metal, gold, chemical industry and building materials mines, passed the review and were certified as green mines in 2010. In 2011, 187 out of 194 mines that participated in the review were certified as ægreen minesÆ. Brown coal in Victoria in spite of its substantial reserves is not utilized greatly because of its high moisture content(-65% w/w). Transportation and handling costs of raw brown coal, on an available energy basis are so expensive that 93% of production is burnt for electricity generation on or adjacent to the coal deposit in Victoria. With direct firing of moist brown coal in power stations, approximately 20% of the gross calorific value of the fuse is used to evaporate the water contained in the coal. This energy is lost as vapour with the flue gas which is vented to the atmosphere. Also there is a 25% increase in flue gas volume and the size and cost of most of the units through which it passes must be appropriately larger. Since there are large quantities of water present the flame temperature is significantly reduced. For zero excess air and no air pre-heating the theoretical flame temperatures are: 609'o wow moisture 1450¦C 40% ª ª ª 1790¦C ZOO ª ª ª 1990¦C As a result of this there is a reduction in radiant heat transfer leading to a requirement for a two fold increase in radiant tube area. A boiler of much greater size and cost is thus required to house the additional tubes. Figure 1 illustrates the relative sizes of a boiler fired with 60% moisture brown coal with a boiler or similar output fed with a British bituminous coal, 14% moisture.

Development of the Greenvale orebody, containing 40,000,000 tonnes of nickel ore, began in 1971 and production commenced in 1974. Annual capacity is 2,800,000 wet tonnes. The variations in ore grade and physical characteristics which occur throughout the ore- body had a major influence on the selection of mining methods, grade control procedures, and equipment. After removal of overburden by scrapers, ore is excavated by draglines sidecasting into windrows. Feed to the crushing plant is .reclaimed by front end loaders into rear dump trucks according to a grade selection pro- gramme. After crushing, ore is stockpiled into blended units of ore of required quality. Ore is stacked and reclaimed for train loading using techniques designed to give maximum mixing of ore characteristics through Bach unit. These procedures are repeated on discharge at the plant site at Yabulu. The railway, constructed by Queensland Nickel Pty. Ltd. to Q.G.R. standard, and operated by the Q.G.R., is 216 km long and includes eight major bridges and three tunnels. Two trains per day, one of four locomotives and 92 waggons, and one of three locomotives and 69 waggons, haul crushed ore to Yabulu. Train loading is semi-automatic. A small township and associated services have been constructed for employees at Green- Vale.

The Greymouth Coal Project is a proposal to mine by the application of proven hydraulic, and room and pillar underground mining methods; and to process the equivalent of an average of 1.7 million tonnes per year over a forty-year period. The proposed mine site is located ten kilometres north of Greymouth, on the west coast of the South Island of New Zealand. Of the three separate mineable seam groups, the thick Main Seam Group, which makes up 77% of the total resource, will be mined by hydraulic mining technology.   It is proposed to market and produce a high volatile bituminous type coal with low ash (6%) and sulphur (0.4%). Because the inherent ash content is low, the requirement for coal treatment will only be the use of a single cell jig circuit to control the effects of rock dilution and partings. The resulting coal product is tentatively planned to be transported by rail to the port at Lyttelton for loading on to Panamax or Post Panamax size vessels.

Blasting is the most commonly used excavation technique in mining and civil engineering applications. Blasting induces strong ground motions and fracturing of rock mass in rock excavations. Particularly, high ground motions may also induce some instability problems of rock mass and structures nearby. Furthermore, it may cause some environmental problems due to noise as well as vibrations of structures near the populated areas. Furthermore, flyrocks is another major issue for the safety of people and damage to machinery and equipments when blasting is employed. In this study, the authors explore the ways how to estimate the ground motions as a function of distance, amount of explosive, number of holes. The ground motions were measured by stand-alone accelerometers developed by the first author and some empirical relations are developed. The effect of ground motions on the instability issues of benches such as sliding, toppling and rockfalls were investigated. Furthermore, the flyrock issue is investigated and some empirical relations to estimate the maximum distance of flyrocks from the blasting relations are compared and discussed. The 1980's have produced an outstanding revival of the Australian gold industry. In contrast to some previous mining booms, the economic aspects of the growth in gold production are soundly based. In general the new developments have been highly profitable and this is beneficial to all parties- whether they be government, shareholders employees or suppliers. Mining companies are showing a large commitment to gold exploration with approximately 50% of Australian exploration budgets now being directed towards gold. An increasing proportion of this expenditure is being channelled towards the eastern States with Queensland 'being the major centre of interest. Further strong growth in production is expected with some 50 projects likely to come on stream before 1990. A very significant aspect of the foundation for this growth is a continuation of the existing tax status of the industry.

The Permian rocks at Gympie were first studied as far back as 1868 in conjunction with the discovery of gold. The relationship of the Gympie Group to other sequences in the Gympie Composite Terrane is an important subject of investigations in a new mapping project of the Geological Survey Program of the Department of Resource Industries.In two areas the Gympie Group has been divided into four defined formations. They are the Highbury Volcanics (base), Ram mutt Formation, South Curra Limestone and Tamaree Formation (top) in the Gympie area, and the Mant basalt (base), Kolbar Formation, Gigoomgan Limestone and Teebar Formation (top) in the Gigoomgan area. Geochemical and lithological evidence from the basal volcanics of the Gympie Group (Highbury Volcanics, Mant basalt) indicate that they developed in an intraoceanic island arc setting. The overlying volcaniclastic sediments (Rammutt Formation, Kolbar Formation), which contain some continentally-derived material, are mainly of local derivation and shallow-water marine. A hiatus is present at the top of the Early Permian Rammutt Formation and Kolbar Formation. Following the hiatus, limestone sedimentation characteristic of a basin of restricted circulation developed in the Late Permian. There is some evidence of a hiatus between the limestone deposition of the Gigoomgan and South Curra Limestones and the overlying probable turbidite deposits of the Teebar and Tamaree Pnrmatinnc

In Northland, New Zealand, localised large deposits of halloysite clay have been produced by in-situ alteration of rhyolite volcanics of Pliocene or Pleistocene age, which were erupted through pre-Pliocene sedimentary strata and locally through Pleistocene basalt; and which were subsequently onlapped by further basalt flows. Alteration to clay has been a result of both hydrothermal and of meteoric processes, and decreases in intensity of alteration with increasing depth. The raw material is crushed and fractionated to produce a product of less than two micron particle size, which is of exceptional whiteness and brightness. The unique properties of the clays render them highly desirable for specialised ceramic purposes.
