Technical Challenges in the Flotation of Molybdenite from Porphyry Copper Ores

It is a facet of modern-day life that change, even of a revolu- tionary nature, normally passes without comment. People have become so conditioned to continuous improve- ments in every aspect of their lives that they would be surprised only if there were to be no change. This paper seeks to demonstrate the extent of technical change, and to indicate the need for a fuller advantage to be taken of the technologies available, or potentially available, to the profes- sion. It contends that the mineral industry has been particularly slow to embrace technical change, and has good reason to con- sider an improved attitude for both prosperity and survival.

INTRODUCTION The association of methane with coal has been known almost since coal was first mined and in general it has been considered the curse of underground coal mining. Historically, most of the effort to handle this methane has been directed at diluting it to a safe level and preventing an explosive mixture of methane and oxygen from forming in any part of the mine. This is generally achieved by in-mine activites. This approach has two principal drawbacks, the severity of which are dependent on local conditions. The first is that the activity associated with the handling of the methane is undertaken in the mine and there- fore competes with the mining activity for the limited space available. The second drawback is that the whole methane handling activity is generally a cost to the coal because methane is so diluted that it cannot be used. With the value of energy increasing thi; second drawback is gaining importance so th.u several mines in Europe and North America ;it,, now installing systems to recover the methane in a useful form. Globally, private minerals companies considering the transition to a public company and entrepreneurs looking to create a new public company through, for example, an initial public offering or by a reverse takeover have many options. For companies with assets around the Pacific Rim, there are arguably five key stock/securities exchanges that actively promote international minerals company listings, and these are located in Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, Singapore and the United Kingdom.Listing on any of these exchanges requires a range of technical, commercial, financial and legal documentation. Each exchange has specific rules and requirements for technical documentation to support the listing process. Once listed, each exchange also has specific rules for technical information to meet ongoing compliance requirements. The Porgera Gold Mine, west of Mt Hagen in PNG is a large open pit and underground operation currently producing gold at the rate of almost one million ounces per year. This deposit has produced some 8.8 million ounces to-date and has current reserves of 103.4 million tonnes @3.2 g/t Au. The Porgera Joint Venture has invested over $A1 billion in infrastructure in this project. Technical management of this operation involves the interrogation of some 700 000 metres of diamond drilling, some 50 000 blastholes per year, and very large volumes of laboratory, geotechnical, environmental and production reporting data. Over the past seven years this data has been consolidated into a single centralised, relational database which now acts as the single reference point for all the technical application systems used for surveying, grade control, production reporting, deposit evaluation and modelling. Data transfer to application programs and management systems is controlled by the centralised database, this process at times involving a two-way, real-time, binary data transfer. The benefits of a specialised database application include security and integrity of the data asset, ease of access, and performance in a multi-user environment. This replaced fragmented, inconsistent data sets stored inefficiently as individual, unindexed, variably formatted files associated with the different application programs. Most importantly, the database has allowed mine management at all levels to make timely, confident investment, cash flow and optimisation decisions as it provides the primary link between the deposit and operational data sets on one hand, and the application programs and management and performance measurement systems on the other. This paper discusses the economic value and importance of technical data in terms of the resource asset and the means by which this data is being managed and used at Porgera.

Computers are playing an increasing role in the management of technical data in mines. Companies are re-assessing the role of their data processing departments as users demand computer resources in non-accounting areas. Data of all kinds is now being seen as a, company resource, and the role of computing professionals is to help to manage the data flow, not merely to manage computers. The concept of distributed data bases puts the responsibility for data entry, editing and updating with the user. This challenges conservative views of centralized control of computing, suggesting, instead, centralized co-ordination. A survey of the possible applications of computers in technical areas points up the special requirements of handling raw, processed and consolidated technical data. Technical data bases have become flexible as mini- computer hardware and software have rapidly developed. Management has the ultimate responsibility for efficiently administering corporate data bases, and it must ensure suitable policies are developed for this purpose, with enough flexibility to cope with the impact of fast changing technology.

Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and Feasibility Studies (FS) were carried out to evaluate the potential use of treated acid mine drainage (AMD) occurring at the Kingsmill Tunnel in the Central Andes of Peru. The 11 km long tunnel drains the underground works of the Morococha Mining District and discharges about 1.25 m3/sec of AMD directly into the Yauli River in the Amazon Basin. The communities living downstream cannot use the Yauli River water due to its low pH and elevated concentrations of metals (eg Cu, Zn, Fe, Mn, As, Cd) and sulfate. Studies carried out for this project included technical feasibility, EIA, economic viability and social impact assessment phases. During the æTechnical FeasibilityÆ phase, the treated AMD was produced by simulating a high density sludge (HDS) lime neutralisation/ precipitation process and was evaluated for various potential uses. Mining companies located in Morococha, in particular Centromin Peru SA, and the Water Works Company of the City of Lima (Sedapal) collaborated with Golder Associates during the studies. The Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) provided the financial assistance. The results of the physical, chemical, biological and toxicological analyses demonstrated that the AMD could be sufficiently treated to be potentially used to supplement the drinking water supply of Lima, and for agricultural (eg irrigation and livestock) and recreational purposes. Process design and scale-up parameters were also determined for implementation of the full-scale treatment facility at the site. The use of the treated AMD as a drinking water supplement would be economically feasible.

A generalised mathematical model for hydrocyclone classifiers was developed by the author (Nageswararao, 1978) using dimensionless groups which include phenomenological characteristics as independent variables. This model is incorporated in JKSimMet, the steady state mineral processing simulator developed by JKTech.Recently, when this model was rewritten (Lynch and Morrell, 1992), in terms of variables other than those used by the author, a few errors have crept in. For example, while the exponent of (Du/Dc) in the equation for d50e should be negative (-0.47), it was recorded as positive (0.47). Also, the exponent of (DoIDe) in the equation for pressure drop should be 0.67 and not 0.60. In the same equation, the exponent of Dc would turn out to be -0.10 and not 0.15. These are clearly attributable to typographic and rounding off errors, while transforming the original equations.More recently, Cilliers (pers comm) has done a comprehensive evaluation of the major semi-empirical models for hydrocyclones.He observed that the major difference between the cyclone model developed by the author and other models lies in the method of quantifying the effect of spigot diameter on d50e. He noted that while all other models predict an increase in d50e with a decrease in the spigot diameter, the model as cited by Lynch and Morrell (1992) predicts just the opposite. However, he conjectured correctly that the discrepancy could be due to a typographic error. As the model is still unpublished, it is felt that the original model equations should be recorded with the correct exponents, so that errors in predictions other than those due to the limitations of the model itself could be avoided. A series of tests on rock stress measurement devices used with the overcoring method indicated that improvements could be made in their construction. A prototype inclusion cell was developed with strain gauge rosettes bonded to a 0.05 mm thickness stainless steel sheet which was formed into a cylinder around two end pieces. The finished diameter was slightly larger than previous cells so that the thinner plate and the reduced annulus of Araldite cement in the installation borehole gave a better response in the laboratory than the other cells tested, especially in simulated bedded rock. It was less affected by inhomogeneity and temperature changes. Its high sensitivity should make it suitable for both absolute stress measurement and field monitoring. A table of comparative readings is given for the new cell and for four other devices used in simulated in-situ rock conditions.

A test on Taylor's rule of mine life using published data on open pit porphyry copper mines confirmed that mine life is, on average proportional to the fourth root of reserve tonnage. Deviations from this rule-of-thumb occur to a large extent as variations between regions that are qualitatively explained in terms of differences in grade, infrastructural needs or special taxation effects.

A theoretical model for gas outbursts in underground coal mines is as follows. An outburst is the structural failure ofcoal due to excess stress resulting from body forces caused by gas pressure gradients. These body forces influence the stability of a mine face in the same manner that gravitational body forces affect the stability of the roof of a mine. The magnitude ofthese body forces can be appreciated when it is realized that for an average density coal, the gravitational body force is equal in magnitude to the force from a gas flow with a pressure gradient of 14 kPa m-I. Gas pressure gradients and the resultant stresses within a seam can be calculated with numerical methods. Thus, providing the necessary parameters can be measured or estimated, in principle the theory can be applied to compare the outburst risk of various mining arrangements.

Bougainville copper concentrate was leached with a strain of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans (SPKI) in a 5 per cent CO2 nitrogen atmosphere.Copper solubilization was 100 per cent in presence of bacteria and only 30 per cent in a sterile acid control medium.Anaerobic copper solubilization rates were one quarter of those measured under aerobic conditions and did not generate acidity.

Most of the gold reef mined today in South Africa is approximately 1 m in width with slopes about 30 m long. To prevent production interruptions it is essential that the stopes should not be blasted in sections. The shortage of experienced labour and arduous working conditions at the face dictate the need for simple blasting techniques.Hence, a pyrotechnic blasting system of sequential firing is in use at present, although research work to improve this technique is in progress.

Results of experiments for dissolution of zinc by aeration of sphalerite in glass, copper, galvanised iron and stainless steel vessels of identical dimensions are reported. It was found that in a glass container dissolution of zinc reaches a maximum after 30 min aeration and then decreases whereas in the copper container dissolution remains nearly unchanged up to 30 min aeration and then increases. In the cases of galvanised iron and stainless steel containers zinc dissolution increased steadily with time up to 60 min aeration. It is suggested that the different rates of dissolution in glass and copper containers may be due to electro-chemical actions.

For an exploration area with a predetermined grid of data points, a construction is given for elementary blocks which subdivide the entire area without omission or overlap, and with the property that each data point is situated at the centre of its corresponding block. The construction has a useful optimal property, and more importantly avoids an error which has been made recently in more than one publication.

Tasker (1985) has detailed the accepted practices for constructing polygonal blocks of influerrce in the estimation of ore reserves. Further he suggests that users might fall into traps such as omission or overlap when determining the area of influence for each sample point.As an example of these types of errors Tasker (1985) describes under "Coverage ofthe Area" how 25 per cent of the exploration area will not be included in an equiangular triangular grid where hexagonal blocks of influence are used.The introductory suggestion of Tasker (1985) of "incorrect procedure" by Rudenno (1983) (and Armstrong (1983)) reiterated around the Figure 2a of Tasker (1985), is based on the brief description of the polygonal area of influence by Rudenno (1983). That description is not too different from that given by King, McMahon and Bujtor (1982).

A method is described for the rapid and effective production of polished section mounts of ore and mineral particulates to the standards required for automated image analysis. This requires mounting without segregation of particles by mass or density, and it is also preferable to avoid having particles in contact so that they can be recognised as individuals. To achieve this, the particle samples are first split to an appropriate degree in a rotary riffle, and the sub-sample mechanically diluted and thoroughly mixed with an inert filler of the same size range as the particles. Just sufficient epoxy resin is added to make the mixture fluid. During setting, the ore particles are mechanically supported by the inert filler particles, thus maintaining the particles in a random three-dimensional distribution. A rapid two-stage grinding process, based on the successive use of 600 mesh silicon carbide and 1200 mesh (10 um) corundum on cast iron plates, is followed by three stages of mechanical diamond polishing on cloth laps. Hand polishing is entirely avoided, as is the use of papers.

The effect of various types of solid carbonaceOlls reductants on the rate of fuming of zinc from lead blast furnace slag was investigated at I250°C.The results of the laboratory experiments indicated that the rate of removal of zinc from slag depended primarily on the volatile matter contents of the reduclants. The effects of fixed carbon, moisture and ash contents were less significant.

Experiments have been made in a laboratory heavy media separator at various specific gravities of separation using zinc chloride solution and magnetite suspension as media for different types of coals. The results indicate that the magnetite bath gives at better separation than zinc chloride solution. Even though the probable error remains the same for most conditions of operation, the error area is found to have a wide variation which emphasises the importance of the error area over probable error in evaluating the performance of a cleaning unit.
