ALTHOUGH not of the same importance as electrical conductivity, the capacity for conducting heat is nevertheless a very important property of metals and alloys. A knowledge of thermal conductivity is of value in selecting alloys for many purposes and in the calculation of the efficiency of apparatus which is being designed. Unfortunately, the determination of thermal conductivity is extremely slow and tedious, consequently few data have been obtained. A further reason for the lack of information is that there has long been an impression that the thermal conductivity of an alloy is directly proportional to the electrical conductivity and that it can therefore be calculated from the latter. The Wiedemann-Franz-Lorenz law of constant ratio of the two conductivities holds with a considerable degree of precision for all the pure metals, but appreciable deviations occur in certain alloys-particularly those containing nickel-and it seems difficult to predict exactly what the ratio will be. Therefore direct determinations of thermal conductivity should be made whenever the results are, needed with any accuracy. This research is intended eventually to cover all the alloys of copper that are of commercial importance, including the binary alloys of copper with zinc, tin, aluminum, nickel, silicon, manganese, cadmium and phosphorus, and the ternary alloys copper-nickel-zinc, copper-nickel-silicon, copper-manganese-silicon, copper-zinc-tin, etc. Most of these alloys are customarily used in the wrought condition and therefore were tested in the form of annealed rods. A limited number of sand castings were also obtained and examined. This paper contains a complete review of all the previous work that has been done on copper alloys, and includes a detailed description of the apparatus and method of procedure used in the present research, together with the new results obtained on the copper-zinc series, which is the only one completed at the present time. Subsequent papers describing the other alloys will contain the experimental results and discussion only.

It is believed that in connection with the study of unit operation by the Petroleum Division of the A. I. M. E. a review of the simple principles of unit operation would be helpful. To that end, the following discussion is submitted. It is not to be considered in any sense as the conclusion of the committee, but rather as material submitted for its consideration and represents at this time only the viewpoints of its authors. Growth of the Oil Industry In 70 years the oil industry has grown from a single well on Oil Creek, Venango County, Pennsylvania, producing 25 bbl, per day, to more than 400,000 wells scattered over five continents with a daily output of 4,000,000 bbl. In that time petroleum has expanded from its simple use as a medicine in a few localities to a multitude of diverse uses in homes of every country the world over. During those years the oil fields of the United States have produced two-thirds of the world's output and have shipped their excess production into almost every country. In those years several hundred thousand good wells in the United States declined into small ones and depleted shallow deposits gave way to deep zones; so that the United States crude oil industry gradually changed from one of low cost production to one of higher cost. Throughout its entire life it has labored under two serious economic disadvantages, namely, constantly recurring periods of demoralization through overproduction, and competitive development methods that are wasteful. Development of Foreign Competition During the transition from low to higher cost production in the United States, events even more significant were taking place in foreign lands. Jungles were tamed and deserts conquered. Oil deposits were found and developed until, in the words of Sir John Cadman, "the globe is now drenched with a commodity which, although necessary to life, involves but an irregular and sometimes meager expenditure of life in its

There is much comment at present in the ranks of the oil industry regarding unit operation of oil fields and the benefit that would accrue if it could be extensively applied. It seems certain that, as an immediate corrective of the present situation, overproduction could be effectively curtailed with all the advantages of proper conservation of petroleum resources and with no important loss to anyone connected with the industry. Unit Operation in Certain Foreign Fields Many an oil operator in America would doubtless like to have exclusive control of one or more oil-bearing structures for development in accordance with the economic position of the industry and especially in accordance with the best production practice known. A few operators now have this privilege, particularly in certain foreign fields, and are following lines of procedure which show that they are aware of the great opportunity that is theirs. We find in an article by Professor Strigeoff,1 and in a paper read by Captain Comins2 before the American Petroleum Institute, the outlines of procedure adopted, respectively, by the Soviet Government for the nationalized Russian oil fields and by the Anglo-Persian Oil Co. for its fields in Persia. Comprehensive plans for the unit operation of other oil fields may have been described publicly but no such descriptions have come to the attention of the writer. New fields are coming more and more into the hands of single operators or of a few who control large activities and who appreciate fully the need for cooperative action and are willing to forego the lure of a large quick profit from high flush production in order to secure the advantage of better stabilization in the industry and a larger though more deferred profit by operating the field as a unit. Much can be done toward efficient development of an oil field controlled by a few operators who are willing to cooperate for that purpose, but the best result can be obtained only by pooling their interests in the field

DUring experimental study on the separation of a zinc concentrate from the heavy sulfide ores of Jerome, Ariz., a great deal of attention has been given to proper activation of the sphalerite content of the ore. The sphalerite at Jerome contains enough iron to class it as a marmatite, as picked specimens have only about 60 per cent. zinc, whereas pure zinc sulfide contains 67 per cent. zinc. This marmatite in large pieces is black in color, but in dry powdered state is brown. A flotation froth made from it has a silvery black luster in comparison with a brassy luster caused by chalcopyrite which occurs in the same ores. The sample used in most of the experiments described below consisted of about 3000 Ib. of diamond-drill core from the zinc-bearing orebodies of the United Verde mine, and had the following analysis: Per Cent. Most of the Jerome ores are so intimately crystallized that reasonably complete unlocking by grinding does not take place until 800 mesh is approached. Therefore, the 200-mesh grind adopted contains a considerable amount of locked mineral grains, but not so much as to render impossible the preparation of commercial grades of concentrate.

Maintaining a satisfactory structure in brass and bronze castings has always been a foundry problem of great practical importance. While metallurgists and scientific investigators have not entirely ignored this matter, it has received less of their attention than has been given to iron, steel and the wrought copper and aluminum alloys. Investigation in this field has probably been discouraged to some extent by the complicated nature of the alloys involved. Hundreds of alloys are in more or less common use, most of them containing copper, zinc, lead and tin in widely varying proportions. They also contain appreciable percentages of iron and antimony as impurities, and often phosphorus, which has been added as a deoxidizer and fluidifier. Small amounts of sulfur are usually present. It is not uncommon to find nickel, sometimes in rather substantial quantities. Traces of other metals are frequently present. So complicated and variable a mixture obviously offers difficulties in any investigation of the various factors that influence the structure and other properties of the casting. Incipient Shrinkage Bolton and Weigandl have called attention to a type of structure characterized by intercrystalline fissures and large dendritic crystals which are frequently tarnished to an orange or reddish brown color. This intercrystalline porosity they term "incipient shrinkage" and attribute to the presence of carbon monoxide in the atmosphere under which the metal was melted. The defective structure to which Bolton and Weigand refer has become a brass-foundry problem of major importance, because it occurs with distressing frequency in leaded brasses and bronzes when these are melted in a neutral or reducing atmosphere. In the light of the experimental data on equilibrium for the reaction C + FeO = Fe + CO in molten steel recently obtained by Kinzel and Egan,l it is necessary to revise current theories regarding the nature of equilibrium between carbon and FeO in the basic open-hearth furnace. According to the measurements of these investigators the equilibrium constant m for the above reaction for a pressure of dissolved CO equal to 1 atm. is equal to 0.0005 at 1550" C., when concentrations of carbon and FeO are expressed in percentages by weight. Their work also shows that, with the pressure of CO fixed at 1 atm., not only is the product of carbon and FeO constant, but carbon and FeO are each independently constant—a circumstance which might have been predicted from theoretical considerations. At 1550" C., carbon is constant at about 0.025 per cent. and FeO at about 0.020 per cent., with the pressure of dissolved CO equal to 1 atm., the product of these two constants being equal to the originally mentioned constant of 0.0005. Available data on the dissolved FeO content of samples taken from the metal bath at practical slag-metal equilibrium prove that this FeO content is determined solely by temperature and the effective FeO content of the slag. The distribution constant r at 1550" C., as determined by Herty, Gaines, Larsen, Simkins, Geruso and Watkins2 is equal to 0.0086. A slag would have to contain 0.020 = 2.3 per cent. effective 0.0086 FeO or less in order to prevent the metal from containing more dissolved FeO than that required for equilibrium with CO at 1 atm. pressure. Invar is the preeminent low-expansion metal by virtue of the fact that it can be prepared with a zero coefficient of expansion at atmospheric temperature. This fact suggests that there is little room for improvement in the expansion properties of the low-expansion nickel steels. The inference is true, however, only so far as the expansion at and near atmospheric temperature is concerned, because the expansivity of invar starts to increase rapidly on heating above 100" C. and soon reaches the value of copper. Guillaumel met this situation by increasing the nickel content above that of invar. By that expedient, alloys having low expansivity under higher temperatures were obtained, but not without a large increase in minimum expansivity. The increase in minimum expansivity with increasing nickel content severely limits the technical applications of these alloys at high temperatures. Prospects of improving the expansion characteristics of the nickel steels is offered by alloying. Search for an advantageous alloying addition by analogy with other alloy systems, however, is not productive because the low-expansion characteristic is unique with that system. The rule of mixtures usually gives a fair value of the expansivity of other solid-solution alloys, but in the iron-nickel systems gives a value of 18 X 10-6 per deg. C. whereas the actual value is 1 X 10-6 per deg. C. Apparently suitable additions are not to be deduced from such ingenuous considerations. Recognition of the fact that the temperature range of low expansivity in nickel steels is terminated with loss of magnetism affords a more promising basis for the selection of an advantageous element. One may expect from that fact that additions of nonmagnetic elements to the iron-nickel alloys are detrimental to the low-expansion characteristic. Indeed, carbon, manganese, silicon, copper and chromium are detrimental to the expansion properties and no nonmagnetic element is reported to be beneficial. On the map of Europe the shield-shaped area included in the boundaries of Rumania appears too small to constitute a very important factor in the wold's oil production. The country has a total area of 122,000 square miles of territory, about one-fifth of 1 per cent. of the world's surface, from which about 21/2 per cent. of the world's oil was produced in 1929. This relatively small area also constitutes one of the known billion-barrel reserves of the world. Oil has been found in various localities in the foothills of the Carpathian Mountains, extending more than 100 miles in length at their base. It is rather unusual that, while the extent of prospective territory seems to be large, the area of the commercially productive pools is comparatively small. Oil accumulation in Rumania is closely associated with salt stocks. Shows of oil are encountered from the Pliocene down to the Cretaceous. Most of the production, however, comes from the Pliocene, the chief producing sands of which are the Dacic and the Meotic, although some oil is produced from the Levantic and the Pontic. The Meotic as a source of oil was known for many years, but the intensive output from this sand series is a comparatively recent development and accounts in a big measure for the steady increase in Rumanian production. In the early part of the summer of 1929 the Astra-Romano (Royal Dutch) completed a well at Moreni in what is thought by some to be a fourth Meotic sand (a new sand series) at a depth of 5200 ft. with an initial production of 2000 bbl. a day of 41" gravity oil. The development of this new horizon has been somewhat retarded by the disastrous fire which occurred at Romano-Americana's well No. 160 in Moreni, but its discovery adds materially to the future life of the Moreni area, one of the country's oldest fields. Rumania's production for 1929 is estimated at 35,556,000 bbl., a daily average of 97,400 bbl. This compares with the total of 31,542,000 bbl. for the previous year, a daily average of 86,180 bbl., or an increase of 12.73 per cent. Rumania now occupies seventh position in the world's oil picture, it having been replaced as the sixth in importance by the Dutch East Indies in 1929. Table 1 shows a comparison of production by districts and fields.

R. F. McELVENNY.- The next item is: "Center and other methods, vs. side charging." That was all discussed in the Carson case, and I do not know but what many of the plants are still using center charging. Some are using side charging. Did I understand that where you use the wet charge it is all side charging on the wet ore? B.-G. C. HONEYMAN.- We were on center charging for about a year with wet ore. R. F. McELVENNY.- Then you went to side charging. Has anyone any remarks to make on side versus center charging? E. A. BARNARD.- We have one side and one center, both on deep bath. It is an experimental proposition so far, but the side charge looks very favorable.. R. F. McELVENNY.- This is with calcine? E. A. BARNARD.- This is with calcine on a floating charge proposition.. They are both water jacket. The charge acts very similar on both center and side charging. The calcine spreads much the same as it does on the center charge. It will run down 75 ft. on the furnace side as well as the center. The advantage is in taking care of secondaries and things of that nature. C. BARDWELL.- Do you get any side wall protection from it? E. A. BARNARD.- No. R. F. McKENZIE.- Do you not project the side wall up to protect the skewback? E. A. BARNARD.- There is a slot projection down around the top of the bath; but the repairs on the side wall have been practically the same; that is, they, have been practically the same as they have on the center charge. A. H. RICHARDS.- A point I would like to make is that if you have any doubt about the center charging, we feel that we get better tonnages and lower fuel ratios and better slags with center charging than we ever got with side. Different kinds of charges would, of course, vary, and I could readily see that if you had the same advantage with deep bath smelting that you mention you would probably get just as good a slag and as good fuel ratios. E. A. BARNARD.- In fact, I think the calcine charge spreads more on the side than on the center charge. A. H. RICHARDS.- If you maintain a deep bath. E. A. BARNARD.- That is one thing we have to be careful about, to hold the charge back.

The catenary system of line construction possesses so many desirable characteristics from the operating standpoint that it has wide application for all types of electric traction. Many steam roads are electrifying sections of their lines, and in most cases are operating both steam and electric locomotives over the same track. This means that the overhead catenary system is subjected to the severe corrosive action of locomotive smoke, and data concerning the resistance of various alloys to this form of corrosion are very desirable from every point of view. Reliable and specific information and data on the subject of corrosion due to steam and smoke from locomotives are extremely meager and, on this account, extensive service tests, together with accelerated tests, have been made on a number of commercial metals and alloys. The observations and data recorded in this paper are the result of a preliminary test which was started in 1923 and which has been carried on to the present time. The recognition of the need for even more detailed and accurate data has resulted in the undertaking of another test which has been in progress for about a year. The result of this test will be published in due course. Some years ago The Ohio Brass Co. was asked by one of the large steam railroad companies to furnish data on construction details for a catenary system which it was considering for one of its divisions. The selection of materials which would give the necessary physical characteristics as well as withstand the severe corrosive action of locomotive gases caused electrical railroad engineers considerable concern. At that time, there were available no specific or authentic data on these important questions: no systematic investigation of the problem appeared to have been made, even though it's importance was generally recognized. Such observations as had been made were crude in that they had been limited largely to visual inspection which too frequently is most misleading. However, the scattered information which was collected gave important clues as to how best to start an investigation. Technical literature was studied, metallurgical experts were consulted, and the problem was discussed with engineers who were in close contact

The Bradford and Richburg oil fields are the only pools where artificially conducted water drives on an extensive scale have been economically successful. Field practice has progressed from the original accidental or intentional circle flood, through the line flood development plan, to the intensive complete development plan, which is the most-recent and generally considered to be the most successful. Of the intensive development plan the five-spot arrangement of wells is the one that has been used most extensively. A further development associated with the latter method is the application of additional hydraulic pressure to that of the hydrostatic head of the column of water in the intake well. In conjunction with this method is the practice of delayed drilling of the oil wells until the water from the intake wells has entered even the less permeable portions of the sand and developed a "bank" of oil at which time all oil wells are drilled as nearly simultaneously as possible. The five-spot pressurc flood with delayed drilling gives more rapid return on investment than any other method. The seven-spot and nine-spot patterns are rarely used. No chemicals, such as sodium carbonate and other so-called flooding agents, are being added to the water at present since the field tests carried on in 1926 gave no positive results. The outstanding features of the Coloinbian situation for the year 1929 were legal and political. The passage of Law 84 and the promulgation of the Regulatory Decree 150 were recounted in the review for 1928, as was also the Presidential proclamation suspending this law and its accompanying decree until decision could be reached in the suits filed against them before the Supreme Court and the Council of State. Early this year the Minister of Industries, Jose Antonio Montalvo, announced the appointment of a commission of foreign experts to aid in drafting a new petroleum law. He requested all of the foreign experts employed not to consult with the oil company representatives in Bogota, and these experts were therefore shut off from receiving any suggestions from those who had actually operated in the country and knew the conditions under which operations would take place. It was to be expected that the provisions of a law suggested under such circumstances would not meet operating conditions satisfactorily. The specific objections are stated in O'Shaughnessy's South American Oil Reports (April, 1929). An especially qualified commentator observes that one of the curious provisions of the proposed law was the high royalty on gas—5c. per 1000 cu. ft. of gas produced. There was also a provision requiring 20 per cent. of the stock of the company operating in Colombia to be offered for sale to Colombians. The bill failed to pass Congress in the closing hours of the session. The Supreme Court, in the meantime, handed down its decision on Law 84 of the previous year and Regulation 150 covering the enforcement of that law. Contrary to expectation, the majority opinion of the Court practically affirmed the constitutionality of both the law and the regulatory decree, with the exception of Article 20 and parts of Article 21 of the decree which referred specifically to the registration of private properties. At the time the suit was filed against Law 84 and Decree 150 the operation of these measures was suspended by the Executive. Law 84 and its Regulatory Decree 150 still remain suspended as the Council of State has not yet brought in a decision upon the questions raised in the suits instituted by the various companies against the law and decree, and at the moment of this writing it appears unlikely that such a decision will be reached by that body.

Cemented tungsten carbide, a product of a branch of metallurgy which has never possessed more than a relatively minor interest and importance, has recently commanded the attention of engineers, industrialists, financiers and men of business. New methods, new opportunities, new goals, never before considered, have suddenly been brought within the scope of practical realization. It is these results that attract the interest of the world, but we, as engineers and metallurgists, will have equal interest in the product itself and in that branch of metallurgy from which it comes. It seems appropriate, therefore, to speak today on Hard Metal Carbides and Cemented Tungsten Carbide, as the latter represents one of the outstanding developments of recent date in non-ferrous metallurgy. We are interested in the hard metal carbides as a group of related metallic substances and in cemented tungsten carbide as the leading representative of the metallurgy of this group. The literature of this general field is limited, and, bearing this in mind, it seems advisable to attempt to cover the field broadly and to correlate the subject matter, rather than to present a detailed account of any one of its phases. Our annual lecture lends itself admirably to this plan. The quickened interest in cemented tungsten carbide, once its potentialities were recognized, the many sides to the problem of developing the manufacture and use of this new product, and the desire to economize as much as possible in the time of development, have brought many into this work, both in this country and abroad, notably the Osram Lamp Co. and Friedrich Krupp in Germany and the General Electric Co. in this country. It would be presuming too much to attempt to speak too broadly of the present state of the art and science of the hard metal carbides and my remarks arc guided largely by the work done in the General Electric Co., and by our associates in the Carboloy Co. Even here the activities of many in these two groups have centered around the utilization of cemented tungsten carbide, which is outside the scope of this talk. Considerable progress has been made during the past year throughout the Russian petroleum industry. Perhaps the most remarkable achievement is the execution of the programs set out by the Central Planning Bureau of the Department of Commerce. These programs have been increased twice during the past operating year, necessitating drilling the richest reserves, instead of developing gradually as originally planned. The fulfillment of the set-out programs during the past few years makes therefore the present five-year plan of considerable importance to the international oil statisticians in approximating actual supply conditions up till 1933. The production of all Russian fields increased by 14,200,000 bbl. as compared with the 1927-1928 operating year, while the next year's program anticipates a further increase of 15,700,000 barrels. It appears therefore that production for 1932-33 will total 187,000,000 bbl., or approximately double that of the operating year just closed. It is also evident that the old fields are counted upon to produce only about 67 per cent. of the total, the new fields, not yet discovered, to furnish the balance of 33 per cent. The problem of scrap is probably of greater importance in the pro duction of gold, silver and other precious metal alloys than is the case for base metals and alloys. Remelting of gold and silver scrap in the shop is always a costly process because it involves losses by oxidation of thc base metals in the alloy with a consequent increase in the percentage of precious metal. This is most marked in the case of alloys containing the low-boiling and easily oxidized metals zinc and cadmium. Since it is not generally feasible to assay every shop remelt it follows that the possibilities of lost values arc large. So-called rolled gold and silver plate is made by soldering or welding the precious metal alloys onto base metal. Such plate when defective must be sent to the refinery to recover the gold and silver values, thereby involving additional expense in the form of refining charges. It is obvious therefore that gold and silver alloy scrap is an important item in manufacturing cost and must be reduced to a minimum. The amount of scrap resulting from poor metal will depend on a number of factors in the manufacturing operations, not least among which is the melting and casting practice. The notes which follow are a summary of experiments performed at various times to determine what variables in melting and casting are influential in the production of sound alloys. Metals Used in Alloying Pure gold, that is, gold of 24-kt. value is very much too soft for jewelry purposes and it is therefore always alloyed with other metals to increase its hardness and resistance to wear. For the same reason pure silver is seldom used alone but is alloyed with copper, the standard alloy being sterling silver which contains 92.5 per cent. silver and 7.5 per cent. copper. The metals commonly used for alloying gold are silver, coppcr, nickel and zinc. It is usual practice in the copper industry to use open horizontal molds for casting tough-pitch copper wire bars.' A wire bar cast in this manner is partly characterized by heavy wrinkles and a comparatively deep skin of oxide on the top of the bar, corresponding to the open side of the mold. On the theory that the rough, high-oxide surface might have an adverse effect on the rolling and drawing properties of a wire bar and might account for some of the irregularities of mill behavior, several bars which had been planed to remove the wrinkled surface were processed into wire. These bars responded to mill treatment more satisfactorily than did the regular wire bars. Realizing that machining the surface of one face of each bar would not be commercially feasible, it was decided that casting the metal into a vertical mold and cropping off the pouring end would accomplish approximately the same result. Several wire bars of commercial size (250 Ib.) were so cast and processed into wire for comparative test with bars cast in the usual horizontal molds. It is the purpose of this paper to present the results obtained from this investigation, in which commercial bar sizes and processing technique were used throughout. The results show that in general copper wire bars cast vertically are superior to those cast horizontally. Experimental Procedure A horizontally cast bar and a vertically cast bar were obtained from each of several regular reverberatory furnace heats of copper which had been refined and poled to tough-pitch metal in accordance with usual methods.' Both bars were cast from the same part of the melt and within five minutes of each other, in order to produce as nearly as possible, in each case, wire bars of identical composition.

LEAD-REFINING practice at the. Bunker Hill differs to some extent from that of other United States refineries using the Parkes process, in that the Bunker Hill-has reverted to a custom used years ago of making two kinds of skims, or crusts, in the desilverizing kettles. Also, this was the first refinery to adopt the liquation process for silver skims as developed in Australia. Both of these ideas were brought to the attention of the operator by H. S. J. Sommerset, in the summer of 1924, while he was visiting metallurgical plants in the United States, when he was general superintendent of the Broken Hill Associated Smelters Pty., Ltd., of Port Pirie, South Australia. Since Mr. Sommerset's visit, United States patents on the liquation process have been issued to George Kenneth Williams, of Port Pirie, South Australia. At the Bunker Hill, the lead bullion is conveyed from the blast furnaces to the refinery in brick-lined cast-steel pots, each having a capacity of 5 tons, by a 20-ton electric crane, to which is suspended a Fairbanks-Morse suspension-type scale on which the gross, tare and net weights are obtained. The bullion is poured from the small bullion pots into either one of two kettles of 105 tons capacity, and when a kettle is entirely filled the heavy dross is removed by skimming it into a 5-ton pot suspended by the crane. The crane operator becomes proficient in the manipulation and a kettle is skimmed in a very short time. After the kettle is skimmed clean the bullion is pumped to a kettle of the same size alongside, where the bullion is cooled until it has almost frozen. By using two kettles for the drossing operation, one to accumulate the bullion where the heavy dross is removed, and then pumping to a clean kettle comparatively free of hangings, etc., it is possible to reduce the copper content much lower than if only one kettle is used in the operation. The average yearly analysis of bullion is given in Table 1.
