The base bullion from the lead blast furnace contains varying amounts of the impurities left in the smelter feed by the concentrator, regardless of the method of smelter operation. These impurities may be held in part in mechanical suspension rather than being present as true alloys. However, usually there is little free space in the crucible in which to separate these drosses before the bullion is taken from the lead well. When such a dross is melted in a laboratory crucible and allowed to cool, the products obtained are lead bullion, speiss, and matte in well separated layers. Typical analyses of layers are: Analyses. Cooperative education for engineers is based on the premise that theory and practice are inseparable in training men for the engineering profession, and the two must be advanced simultaneously in order to train men most successfully and efficiently. The teaching of theory obviously should be done by the college but the practice must be obtained in the field where the application of the theory is made. The ideally trained engineer is one that knows theory, can apply the theory to practice, can direct, and work with, his fellow men. The old four-year plan of training engineers does a fair job of teaching the underlying theory of engineering but neglects entirely the training necessary for application of the theory, except through laboratory experiments, and the training in adjustments necessary to direct and work with men. An engineer, like a lawyer, doctor, dentist or other professionally trained man, cannot practice until he has had practical experiences that give him a knowledge of the other phases of his profession. The doctor serves as an interne, the lawyer reads law in the office of a practicing attorney, and the engineer must enter the profession as a laborer or as an apprentice, unless he has had the advantage of a cooperative education. Cooperative education provides the opportunity for the coordination of practical and theoretical training for the engineering profession throughout the period of training and thus eliminates many that are unfit to enter the profession, giving them an opportunity to seek other fields for which they may be better fitted, and reduces the overhead in industry that results from a large turnover of men not fitted for the profession. The Cooperative Plan Cooperative education in engineering is no longer an experiment. It was inaugurated at the University of Cincinnati in 1904 by Dean Herman Schneider, and has worked successfully ever since. Over twenty schools offer this type of education and many thousands of young men have had the opportunity to receive their technical training under this plan. Under the cooperative plan a student attends class for a period of eight weeks, then enters industry for eight weeks, maintaining this schedule

The relation between man-hours of labor and production may be correlated for any industry, and already it has been widely used in piecework studies. It is not in general use as yet for recording labor efficiency of an enterprise or an industry. An exception to this is the Cement Institute, which tabulates the man-hours used in each operation and thus gets the total man-hours per barrel of cement. The writer knows of one steel company that keeps a complete record of man-hours for every operation from mining the ore to finishing the product. No doubt many others find the information useful, and such a study could be of value to the mineral industries.

The term "modern automatic baghouses" as used in the title of this paper is intended to designate a general type of mechanical fume filter, introduced some 20 years ago and gradually improved since that time. It is characterized by its small filtering bags, enclosed in groups of 15 to 30 in steel compartments, and by its frequency of shaking, as compared to the old type of baghouse, which uses much larger bags, shaken at much longer intervals. Automatic baghouses are produced by a number of well-known manufacturers. Some recently constructed baghouses of the old type have embodied some of the principles of the automatic type, in that they are divided into several compartments, with separate fans for the different compartments, and flue headers arranged so that when the fan to any one compartment is shut down preparatory to shaking the bags in that compartment, the bags are put under suction by the draft from the other fans, thus making possible more efficient cleaning of the bags. These baghouses have motor-driven shaking mechanisms, and generally are operated under higher pressure and shaken at more frequent intervals than was the practice with the old style baghouse, and consequently have greater filtering capacity per unit of bag area. It is possible to interconnect the fan motors and the motors driving the bag-shaking mechanism, with suitable relays and timing devices, so that the operation of this type of baghouse also becomes to a considerable extent automatic. These baghouses are intermediate between the old style of baghouses, strictly speaking, and the completely automatic baghouses. They may he considered just as modern as the latter, and their proponents can no doubt cite many advantages for them. The authors are less familiar with them than with other types, and the following discussion will be limited to a comparison of the automatic baghouses and old style baghouses, with particular reference to the experience of The Eagle-Picher Lead Co. and The Eagle-Picher Mining and Smelting Company.

THE actual procedure in estimating depth of overburden from mag-netic observations made on the surface will vary with the form of the deposit and any theoretical discussion will apply only so far as the form of the deposit conforms to the mathematical premises on which the theory is based. Since the shapes of natural deposits in the field cannot be expressed rigorously in mathematical form, the best that can be done is to assume some simple form and deduce results. Fortunately many small variations in form produce only slight changes in the estimated depth of overburden, therefore the methods have a definite practical value. For the theoretical treatment, magnetic ore deposits may be divided roughly into three classes, depending upon whether the magnetic anom-alies may be considered to arise from (1) a single magnetic pole, (2) a dike or (3) a magnetic doublet. Particular cases, falling under one or other of these classes, have been discussed by different authors.1-4 In general, it may be stated that when the magnetic effects as measured on the surface are due only to one pole of the body, the other pole being so remote that its effect may be neglected, the resultant anomaly F at any point will vary as the inverse square of the distance r of the point from the pole, which may be expressed mathematically by F = k/r2, where k is a constant. When the deposit occurs in the form of a long, thin dike, the resultant anomaly will be of the form F = k'/r and when the deposit is in the shape of a lens, so that both poles have an appreciable effect on the surface, the result will be similar to that caused by a magnetic doublet, and the form will be F = k'/r3. The particular class under which a deposit falls may be deduced from the results of the magnetic survey. The second class is readily found, but there may be difficulty in deciding between the first and third. Isody-namic contours of both the vertical and horizontal anomalies will often be a good guide in making a correct decision.

Electrolytic refining of all lead bullion produced at the Oroya smelter of the Cerro de Pasco Copper Corporation has been adopted as standard practice. A pilot refinery with a capacity of 25 metric tons daily has been in operation since June, 1934, and a new refining unit having an initial capacity of 100 tons per day is under construction. This program has been made possible by certain modifications of the usual Betts refining process1, developed at Oroya, which have the effect of making the purity of the lead produced, and the acid loss incurred in operating the process, entirely independent of the amount of impurities in the original bullion. The modified process, as developed and at present used, treats impure bullion direct, without presoftening or other prerefining step, except that if the bullion carries tin it is desirable to detin before casting into anodes, since tin carries over to some extent to the cathodes. The refining process developed differs from usual Betts practice in two essential particulars: the anodes are cast thinner and replaced at more frequent intervals, and anode slimes are washed by a system of counter-current dipping, prior to their removal from the surface of the anode scrap. Limiting the period of anode corrosion insures a cathode of high purity, since solution of impurities at the anode can occur only if the thickness of the anode slime blanket, and hence the voltage drop across it, becomes greater than a certain critical value. The dip washing system operates to prevent acid losses, by recovering the highly concentrated, nearly neutral lead fluosilicate solution present in the pores of the slime blanket on the corroded anode, and doing this in such a way that there is no opportunity for chemical decomposition to occur. The best illustration of the efficacy of these two expedients may be secured from records of more than a year's operation of the 25-ton pilot plant, during which period the acid losses were less than 2 Ib. of 100 per cent hydrofluosilic acid (H2SiF6) per ton of lead produced, and typical assays of bullion and refined lead were as shown in Table 1.

THE Teziutlan copper-zinc deposit is supposed to be of late Cambrian or early Paleozoic age. The country rocks are a series of schists or phyllites, flat lying and in the form of a plunging anticline. The ore deposit occupies a single horizon in the schist for a known horizontal extent of 1200 meters. Along its strike occur four large lenses or ore bodies. These ore bodies occupy positions along the flank and extend to the crest of the anticline. The primary mineralization is in the form of quartz, pyrite, sphalerite, chalcopyrite and galena, with a few scattered silver anti-monides. Quartz and pyrite form the mineralization between the ore lenses. In the ore lenses the sulphides appear as a massive, very fine-grained intergrowth of minerals. The intergrowth suggests a contemporaneous deposition of the heavy sulphides. The grain size, usually under 0.09 mm., makes the separation difficult and fine grinding important. The ore bodies were formed at great depth by solutions probably originating in the same basic magma that gave rise to the dolerite sills that are so common in their vicinity.

The principal event during 1936 was the sale of Mosul Oilfields, Ltd. to Mosul Holdings, Ltd., a British company with French and American participation, and the expansion of its wildcat activities to untested structures on its West Tigris concession. Mosul Holdings continued the exploration of its low-gravity Qaiyarah-Najmah-Jawan-Qasab field. The Iraq Petroleum Company's systematic exploration and exploitation of its Kirkuk field was continued on a scientific unitized basis. Pressures and gas-oil ratios remained satisfactory. All wells were produced by flowing. A stabilization plant large enough to supply the 4,000,000-ton pipe line to the Mediterranean was completed at Kirkuk about the close of the year and only sweet oil is now being exported. The Khanaqin Oil Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of the Anglo-Iranian Oil Co., Ltd., continued the normal exploitation of its Naft Khaneh oil field, refining and marketing through the Rafidain Oil Co., Ltd. for local Iraq market. This field lies partly on the Iraq side of the boundary and partly on the Iranian side, the latter portion being known as Naft-i-Shah. Only the Iraq side is considered in this paper. Slightly more than 30,000,000 bbl. of crude was produced in Iraq during 1936. The I.P.C. exported all crude sold outside of Iraq and showed an increase of about 2,500,000 bbl. over the preceding year. Crude production in Iraq for export in 1934 was 7,096,669 bbl.'; in 1935 it was 27,014,904 bbl. and in 1936 it was 29,521,053 barrels.

PART I. ORIENTATION RELATIONSHIPS IN OXIDE LAYERS Oriented overgrowths and intergrowths among both metallic and nonmetallic substances have been recognized and studied for well over a century. The work of Widmanstätten in 1808 on the geometrical struc-ture in meteorites, a structure known by his name, demonstrated that oriented intergrowths can occur in purely metallic systems. This fact led to much of the early microscopic study of alloys, contributing greatly to the advance of physical metallurgy. The problem has been attacked again in recent years in a comprehensive fashion, with the object of dis-covering what atomic movements may occur during phase changes in alloy systems. Much of this work has appeared in the A.I.M.E. TRANS-ACTIONS in a series of papers published by Mehl and coworkers beginning in 19311. Although many aspects of this general problem remain unsolved, it may be said that the orientation of a new phase forming by precipitation from solid solution or by transformation invariably bears, a unique relationship to the orientation of the phase from which it formed, and that similarity in atomic patterns on atomic planes in the two phases play an important part in determining the orientation relationship. Analogous orientation relationships exist in oriented intergrowths in nonmetallic systems-mineral or inorganic. In 1827 Haidinger2 dis-covered natural intergrowths of hematite and magnetite, and demon-strated that the rough form of the magnetite octahedrons was delineated by small crystals of hematite, of which the basal (00.1) planes lay parallel to the octahedral cleavage planes of the magnetite. The description of this orientation relationship was later completed by von Rath3, who showed that the edge (00-1):(10-1) in hematite lies normal to the [111]

This paper is the nineteenth of a series from the Aluminum Research Laboratories, presenting the results of the investigations of equilibrium relations in aluminum-base alloys made from electrolytically refined aluminum. In previous papers equilibrium relations have been determined and correlated for 12 binary systems. Equilibrium relations have also been determined for portions of the aluminum corners of three ternary systems (aluminum-iron-silicon, aluminum-magnesium-silicon and aluminum-copper-magnesium). The object of the present paper and those to follow is to increase our knowledge of the aluminum corner of the more important ternary systems. In 1926 Dix and Keith † suggested a new method for designating the phases encountered in alloy systems. The system has been used to a very limited extentl,2,3 The system has since been slightly modified and will be used in this and future papers. In the system as modified, a phase is designated by placing in parentheses the chemical symbols of the elements essential to the formation of that phase. The symbols in the parentheses are separated by dashes in order to clearly distinguish them from a chemical formula. Elements that are not necessary to the formation of the phase in question, but which may be present in solid solution, are not indicated in the designation. If two or more phases would have the same designation according to these rules, they are distinguished by prefixing Greek letters, and are definitely identified by X-ray diffraction patterns. Previous Investigations The solid solubility of magnesium in aluminum has been well established by the work of Dix and Keller4, Schmid and Siebe15, and Saldau and Sergeev6. SINCE the year 1643, when the first blast furnace in America for treating iron ore was built at Saugus, Mass., out of mica schist quarried in the neighboring district, the procurement of a suitable refractory for furnace lining has been a problem of concern to the operators of furnaces. The stacks built of mica schist continued to smelt iron ore until about 1836, when, according to F. H. Norton, the first firebrick were produced', at Queens Run, Pa. Other writers speak of brick having been molded and burned in Massachusetts about the year 1834. In 1841, Andrew Russell began to produce medium refractory plastic clay brick near East Liverpool, Ohio, that were used for lining blast furnaces'. The well-known Kentucky clay-producing district was not opened up until the year 1871, but since then it has produced a large percentage of the linings for iron blast furnaces. While some strides have been made by the refractories industry during the 100 years that have passed since the first firebrick were produced, it has been only during the last two decades that any real progress has been made towards bettering the product, even though the method of production had improved. Perhaps the fault lies with the user of the brick rather than with the producer, for not sooner demanding a supe¬rior product. During the past 15 years the tonnage produced per lining has increased from 500,000 gross tons to 1,000,000 gross tons, and now some furnaces are producing 1,600,000 gross tons and better on a single lining. It is true that enlarged capacity of furnaces and improved practice have accounted for some of this increase in tonnage, nevertheless better quality in firebrick must be given credit for its share. However, we are not yet ready to say that we have reached a maximum life of furnace lining. We believe that a better product can be produced and that the refractories industries of America will, through their extensive research depart-

PATENT records show that the attempt to improve the burning of fuel by mixture or pretreatment with chemicals dates back to the early years of the last century. By 1845 English and French patents had included the specific beneficiations of elimination or reduction of smoke, soot and clinker; reduction of the ashes; elimination of sulphur fumes; increase of the rate of burning; increase of the time a given charge of fuel would last; and, in most patents, a saving of fuel. The earlier patents specified additions up to 80 lb. or more per ton of fuel, but after 1860 the quantity was seldom more than 4 lb. There is no record of the extent to which these patents were commercialized, but after 1874 many American patents were assigned to companies specializing in treatment of coal, so it is probable that the products were marketed on a considerable scale at least as early as that date. From 1900 on, many proprietary products were marketed under the general name of "fuel savers," the principal sales being in small packages for the use of householders; savings of from 10 to 40 per cent of the coal were promised. Starting with 1927, the use of proprietary or other mixtures of chemicals was extended to power plants and to treatment of coals at the mines, the claims of saving of fuel being subordinated to those of general improvement and, in particular, to reduction of clinkering. Such expectations are attractive and a number of companies experi-mented with or adopted the practice. There were reports of improved operation, but, apparently, few were confident enough that these improvements were due to the salts to publish the results of tests or their records of operation. There are no data on the yearly tonnage of coal treated but indirect reports suggest that it has been relatively large. Since its establishment in 1910, the U. S. Bureau of Mines has con-tinually received inquiries about these products. At the request of. other governmental departments it made tests in 1910, 1916 and 1930, using certain proprietary products applied according to the instructions of the vendors; these tests were made with eastern coals in domestic and

LEAD has often been suggested as a protective coating for iron and steel. Such a protective coating should possess: (1) good adhesion, (2) durability, (3) ease of application, (4) freedom from pinholes, (5) good appearance and (6) low cost, but, unfortunately, lead coatings so far produced do not have all of these characteristics. Because of the necessity of carrying out the coating process cheaply, and because lead solutions have poor plating characteristics, most of the efforts have been directed toward the hot-dipping process rather than electroplating. The hot-clipping processes using lead have not been successful chiefly because of the lack of adherence between iron and lead. In any coating process involving iron a bond can be obtained only by the formation of an intermetallic compound, the formation of a solid solution, or mechanical means. Lead forms with iron two immiscible liquid solu-tions, and in the solid state no intermetallic compounds or solutions. It is necessary, therefore, to employ some other element or elements as a binding agent. Tin may be used as in terneplate, or copper in the form of a thin film of electrolytically deposited metal to which the lead will adhere. Because of its physical and chemical properties, lead as a coating medium would undoubtedly be limited in its use to sheet and wire and then only when the article is not subject to abrasion or wear. A very large tonnage of these products are being used under such conditions and a successful lead-coating process should be a valuable contribution to the science. Two other difficulties stand in the way of successful lead coating-that of poor appearance of the weathered surface and the tendency of the lead to form pinholes during solidification. Since lead is commonly accepted as cathodic to iron, these exposed areas are ones of accelerated corrosion.

Early in the development of the art of metallurgy, it was noted that a distinct difference existed in the character, collection possibility and health hazard of the "smoke" from lead furnaces and those from copper plants. Zinc-plant fumes, although not so detrimental to health, were closely allied in nature to those of the lead works. In Cottrell plants, there are sufficiently distinct differences in operation and amount of construction between those for lead and copper to justify their consideration under separate headings; therefore, while the application of the process at copper-reduction works was covered by the writer some two years ago in the Transactions1,† this discussion will confine itself more distinctly to "fume" collection. General information on the process has been presented in numerous articles and by many authors: Cottre112, Schmidt3, Bradley4, Anderson6, Labbe6, Shiga7, Rathbun8. "Fume" may be defined as material, metal or nonmetal, elemental or compound, evolved as a vapor from a furnacing or chemical reaction and condensing, chilling or reacting within the gas stream to yield a solid form, and in this definition liquid particles are solids in a sense as distinguished from gases or vapors. Such condensed particles are of minute form, on the order of "smoke," and, for example, on the order of a few hundredths of 1 micron (1 micron = 1/25,000 in.) to perhaps 3 microns, with agglomerates, in relatively small proportions of many particles. Metallurgically typical fume products are lead compounds, oxides, carbonates and sulphates; elemental zinc, more commonly encountered as a fume particle of zinc metal with a surrounding "skin" of zinc oxide; arsenic, both metal and oxide and some of its more complex salts such as added sulphates as found in flue dusts; antimony, more particularly its oxide forms; and elemental sulphur, sometimes a troublesome product, in Dwight-Lloyd sintering-plant fumes. These products, particularly the elemental or lower oxide forms, have relatively appreciable vapor pressures at the existing operating temperatures as reported by Welch and Duschak9, Ingold10, Johnstonll, Millar12,13.

Greater progress than in any previous year was accomplished by the oil industry in New Mexico in 1936. The total number of completions in the state was 631, of which 549 were oil wells, 21 were hydrocarbon gas wells, three were carbon dioxide gas wells, and 58 were dry holes. The total oil production for the year was 26,804,446 bbl. Compared with the production for 1935 of 20,228,947 bbl., this represented a gain of 32.5 per cent. Of the total production, 25,337,382 bbl. came from Lea County. The average daily nonmarginal well allowable for that county was 115 bbl. the first of the year and 86 bbl. at the close. There is nothing new about dragline dredging for placer gold. The use of the separate unit for excavating preceded the large barge with excavator mounted upon it, which has reached a high state of perfection through use in every part of the world. But at present there is a vogue for a small, inexpensive plant combining a dragline excavator on caterpillar mounting and a gravel-washing plant on a floating barge. The most efficient ones use a bucket of 1 to 2 yd. capacity with boom from 40 to 70 ft. long. The barge varies from 20 by 30 ft. to 36 by 48, and carries the trommel screen, pump, riffle sluices and power engine. Plants in Oboville District In the Oroville district eight such plants have been built since 1933, and have been operated with varying success. The most successful of these is the plant of the Wyandotte Gold Dredging Co. This organization of six active partners constructed its first plant on Wyandotte Creek in the autumn of 1933. To September of 1935 about one million cubic yards of gravel was dredged for an output of about $225,000 in gold. The operation has been successful from the beginning, because of wise management, which was based upon good plant design and proper principles of operation. All the partners have taken a more or less active part in the operation. Usually there is one at work on each shift, and they have conducted their own prospecting and building also. They elected H. F. England as manager, with wide power of control, and he carries out this responsibility energetically and successfully. One of the other plants, started shortly before the Wyandotte, finally abandoned its operation and sold its ground to the latter company, which successfully worked it for a profit. The failure of the other plant was due principally to poor excavating equipment. Another organization that built a plant some months later than the Wyandotte company had considerable difficulty in management and was unable to keep ahead of expenses. Finally, late last summer, it entered into an agreement with the Wyandotte company to have the latter supply

The Institute is represented on the boards of the John Fritz Medal, the Hoover Medal and the Washington Award, in connection with the three national societies of Civil, Mechanical and Electrical engineering; and, also, in the case of the Washington Award, with the Western Society of Engineers. The Institute is represented with these four societies on the committee in charge of the Alfred Noble Prize.
